1. Safety and Efficacy of Using Advanced Hybrid Closed Loop Off-Label in an Infant Diagnosed with Permanent Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report and a Look to the Future

Abstract: The case report shows the safety and efficacy of insulin treatment with Advanced Hybrid Closed Loop (AHCL) system in a young patient affected by permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus (PNDM) due to chromosome 8 deletion syndrome involving the GATA4 gene. In the first days of life, he presented hyperglycaemia and started an intravenous insulin infusion therapy, replaced by a continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) with Medtronic Minimed 780G® insulin pump (Medtronic, Northridge, CA, USA). At the age of 2 years, the off-label activation of SmartGuard® automated insulin delivery mode led to a great improvement in glycaemic control, reaching all recommended targets. At the 1-month follow-up visit, Time in Range (TIR) increased from 66% to 79%, with a Time in Tight Range (TTIR) of 55% and a reduction of 11% in time in hyperglycaemia and of 2% in time in hypoglycaemia. During the entire follow-up, no episodes of ketoacidosis or severe hypoglycaemia were observed and the patient maintained the glycaemic recommended targets reached at 1 month. Maintaining optimal glycaemic control and reducing hyperglycaemia are essential for brain growth and neurocognitive development in young patients. AHCL use should be considered to ensure good glycaemic control in patients affected by neonatal diabetes.

2. A Novel Fluidic Platform for Semi-Automated Cell Culture into Multiwell-like Bioreactors

Abstract: In this work, we developed and characterized a novel fluidic platform that enables long-term in vitro cell culture in a semi-automated fashion. The system is constituted by a control unit provided with a piezoelectric pump, miniaturized valves, and a microfluidic network for management and fine control of reagents’ flow, connected to a disposable polymeric culture unit resembling the traditional multiwell-like design. As a proof of principle, Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) and Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hMSC) were seeded and cultured into the cell culture unit. The proliferation rate of HUVEC and the osteogenic differentiation of hMSC were assessed and compared to standard culture in Petri dishes. The results obtained demonstrated that our approach is suitable to perform semi-automated cell culture protocols, minimizing the contribution of human operators and allowing the standardization and reproducibility of the procedures. We believe that the proposed system constitutes a promising solution for the realization of user-friendly automated control systems that will favor the standardization of cell culture processes for cell factories, drug testing, and biomedical research.

3. Hybrid Additive Fabrication of a Transparent Liver with Biosimilar Haptic Response for Preoperative Planning

Abstract: Due to the complexity of liver surgery, the interest in 3D printing is constantly increasing among hepatobiliary surgeons. The aim of this study was to produce a patient-specific transparent life-sized liver model with tissue-like haptic properties by combining additive manufacturing and 3D moulding. A multistep pipeline was adopted to obtain accurate 3D printable models. Semiautomatic segmentation and registration of routine medical imaging using 3D Slicer software allowed to obtain digital objects representing the structures of interest (liver parenchyma, vasculo-biliary branching, and intrahepatic lesion). The virtual models were used as the source data for a hybrid fabrication process based on additive manufacturing using soft resins and casting of tissue-mimicking silicone-based blend into 3D moulds. The model of the haptic liver reproduced with high fidelity the vasculo-biliary branching and the relationship with the intrahepatic lesion embedded into the transparent parenchyma. It offered high-quality haptic perception and a remarkable degree of surgical and anatomical information. Our 3D transparent model with haptic properties can help surgeons understand the spatial changes of intrahepatic structures during surgical manoeuvres, optimising preoperative surgical planning.

Abstract: In this paper, we describe QUBIC, an experiment that will observe the polarized microwave sky with a novel approach, which combines the sensitivity of state-of-the-art bolometric detectors with the systematic effects control typical of interferometers. QUBIC’s unique features are the so-called “self-calibration”, a technique that allows us to clean the measured data from instrumental effects, and its spectral imaging power, i.e., the ability to separate the signal into various sub-bands within each frequency band. QUBIC will observe the sky in two main frequency bands: 150 GHz and 220 GHz. A technological demonstrator is currently under testing and will be deployed in Argentina during 2019, while the final instrument is expected to be installed during 2020.

5. Blue growth zones caused by Fe2+ in tourmaline crystals from the San Piero in Campo gem-bearing pegmatites, Elba Island, Italy

Abstract: Two tourmaline crystals with a blue growth zone at the analogous pole, respectively from the San Silvestro and the Fucili pegmatites, located in the San Piero in Campo village, Elba Island (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy), have been described for the first time using compositional and spectroscopic data to define their crystal-chemical aspects and the causes of the colour. Compositional data obtained by electron microprobe analysis indicate that both tourmalines belong to the elbaite–fluor-elbaite series. The upper part of each crystal is characterised by an increased amount of Fe (FeO up to ~1 wt.%) and a Ti content below the detection limit. Optical absorption spectra recorded on the blue zone of both samples show absorption bands caused by spin-allowed d-d transitions in [6]-coordinated Fe2+, and no intervalence charge transfer Fe2+-Ti interactions, indicating that Fe2+ is the only chromophore. Mössbauer analysis of the blue zone of the Fucili sample confirmed the Fe2+ oxidation state, implying that the redox conditions in the crystallisation environment were relatively reducing. The presence of colour changes at the analogous termination during tourmaline crystal growth suggests a change in the composition of the crystallisation environment, probably associated with a partial opening of the system.

6. Uvite, CaMg3(Al5Mg)(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH), a new, but long-anticipated mineral species of the tourmaline supergroup from San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy

Abstract: Uvite, CaMg3(Al5Mg)(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH), is a new mineral of the tourmaline supergroup. It occurs in the Facciatoia quarry, San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy (42°45′04.55″N, 10°12′50.89″E) at the centre of a narrow (2–3 cm wide) vein composed of aggregates of dark brown to black tourmaline, penetrating (magnesite + dolomite)-rich hydrothermally altered metaserpentinite. Crystals are euhedral and up to 1 cm in size, brown with a vitreous lustre, conchoidal fracture and grey streak. Uvite has a Mohs hardness of ~7½, a calculated density of 3.115 g/cm3 and is uniaxial (–). Uvite has trigonal symmetry, space group R3m, a = 15.9519(10) Å, c = 7.2222(5) Å, V = 1597.3(1) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 1.77% using 1666 unique reflections collected with MoKα X-rays. The closest end-member compositions of valid tourmaline species are fluor-uvite and feruvite, to which uvite is related by the substitutions W(OH)– ↔ WF– and YMg2+ ↔ YFe2+, respectively. The occurrence of a solid-solution between uvite and magnesio-lucchesiite, according to the substitution ZMg2+ + W(OH)– ↔ ZAl3+ + WO2–, is supported by experimental data. The new mineral was approved by the IMA–CNMNC (IMA 2019-113). Uvite from Facciatoia formed by the reaction between B-rich fluids, released during the crystallisation process of LCT pegmatites, and the surrounding metaserpentinites, altered by contact metamorphism in the aureole of the Miocene Mt. Capanne monzogranitic pluton.

7. HeLLePhant: A phantom mimicking non-small cell lung cancer for texture analysis in CT images

Abstract: Phantoms mimicking human tissue heterogeneity and intensity are required to establish radiomic features robustness in Computed Tomography (CT) images. We developed inserts with two different techniques for the radiomic study of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) lesions.We developed two insert prototypes: two 3D-printed made of glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PET-G), and nine with sodium polyacrylate plus iodinated contrast medium. The inserts were put in a handcraft phantom (HeLLePhant). We also analysed four materials of a commercial homogeneous phantom (Catphan® 424) and collected 29 NSCLC patients for comparison. All the CT acquisitions were performed with the same clinical protocol and scanner at 120kVp. The HeLLePhant phantom was scanned ten times in fixed condition at 120kVp and 100kVp for repeatability investigation. We extracted 153 radiomic features using Pyradiomics. To compare the features between phantoms and patients, we computed how many phantom features fell in the range between 10th and 90th percentile of the corresponding patient values. We deemed repeatable the features with a coefficient of variation (CV) less than or equal to 0.10.The best similarity with the patients was obtained with the polyacrylate inserts (55.6-90.2%), the worst with Catphan (15.7-19.0%). For the PET-G inserts 35.3% and 36.6% of the features match the patient range. We found high repeatability for all the inserts of the HeLLePhant phantom (74.3-100% at 120kVp, 75.7-97.9% at 100kVp), and observed a texture dependency in repeatability.Our study shows a promising way to construct heterogeneous inserts mimicking a target tissue for radiomic studies.

Abstract: Celleriite, ☐(Mn22+Al)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH), is a new mineral of the tourmaline supergroup. It was discovered in the Rosina pegmatite, San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy (holotype specimen), and in the Pikárec pegmatite, western Moravia, Czech Republic (co-type specimen). Celleriite in hand specimen is violet to gray-blue (holotype) and dark brownish-green (co-type) with a vitreous luster, conchoidal fracture, and white streak. Celleriite has a Mohs hardness of ~7 and a calculated density of 3.13 and 3.14 g/cm3 for holotype and its co-type, respectively. In plane-polarized light in thin section, celleriite is pleochroic (O = pale violet and E = light gray-blue in holotype; O = pale green and E = colorless in co-type) and uniaxial negative. Celleriite has trigonal symmetry: space group R3m, Z = 3, a = 15.9518(4) and 15.9332(3) Å, c = 7.1579(2) and 7.13086(15) Å, V = 1577.38(9) and 1567.76(6) Å3 for holotype and co-type, respectively (data from single-crystal X-ray diffraction). The crystal structure of the holotype specimen was refined to R1 = 2.89% using 1696 unique reflections collected with MoKα X-ray intensity data. In the Rosina pegmatite, celleriite formed an overgrowth at the analogous pole of elbaite–fluorelbaite–rossmanite crystals during the latest stage of evolution of pegmatite cavities after an event of a pocket rupture. In the Pikárec pegmatite, celleriite occurs as an intermediate growth sector of elbaite, princivalleite, and fluor-elbaite.

10. Dark-coloured Mn-rich overgrowths in an elbaitic tourmaline crystal from the Rosina pegmatite, San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy. Witness of late-stage opening of the geochemical system

Abstract: Multicoloured tourmalines from Elba Island, commonly display dark-coloured terminations due to incorporation of Fe, and also occasionally Mn. The mechanisms which led to the availability of these elements in the late-stage residual fluids are not yet completely understood. For this purpose, we investigated a representative tourmaline crystal found naturally in two fragments within a wide miarolitic cavity in the Rosina pegmatite (San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy), and characterised by late-stage dark-coloured overgrowths. Microstructural and paragenetic observations, together with compositional and spectroscopic data (electron microprobe and optical absorption spectroscopy), provide evidence which shows that the formation of the dark-coloured Mn-rich overgrowths are the result of a pocket rupture. This event caused alteration of the cavity-coating spessartine garnet by highly-reactive late-stage cavity fluids by leaching processes, with the subsequent release of Mn to the residual fluids. We argue that the two fragments were originally a single crystal, which underwent natural breakage followed by the simultaneous growth of Mn-rich dark terminations at both breakage surfaces. This conclusion supports the evidence for a pocket rupture event, responsible for both the shattering of the tourmaline crystal and the compositional variation of the cavity-fluids related to the availability of Mn, which was incorporated by the tourmaline crystals. Additionally, a comparison of the dark overgrowths formed at the analogous and the antilogous poles, provides information on tourmaline crystallisation at the two different poles. The antilogous pole is characterised by a higher affinity for Ca, F and Ti, and a selective uptake of Mn2+, even in the presence of a considerable amount of Mn3+ in the system. This uneven uptake of Mn ions resulted in the yellow–orange colouration of the antilogous overgrowth (Mn2+ dependent) rather than the purple-reddish colour of the analogous overgrowths (Mn3+ dependent).

Abstract: Ferro-fluoro-edenite, ideally NaCa2Fe2+5(Si7Al)O22F2, was found as prismatic crystals up to 1.00 mm inside cavities in ejecta of the 1873 eruption at La Fossa crater, Vulcano Island, Aeolian Archipelago, Sicily, Italy. It is associated with quartz, magnetite, and vonsenite. Crystals are dark brown to black, transparent or semitransparent with vitreous luster, and non fluorescent. The Mohs hardness is 5–6. Cleavage is fair on {110} and fracture is uneven. Density (calc.) is 3.358 g cm–3 using the empirical formula and single-crystal cell data. The mineral is biaxial negative, α = 1.629(2), β = 1.659(2), γ = 1.667(2), 2V (calc.) = –53.8°, Y = b. Dispersion is weak to very weak, r < v, pleochroism not visible. Ferro-fluoro-edenite is monoclinic, space group C2/m, a = 9.9132(10), b = 18.1736(19), c = 5.2943(6) Å, β = 104.85(1)°, V = 922.0(2) Å3, Z = 2. The strongest X-ray diffraction peaks in the powder pattern are [d(I, hkl)]: 8.54(100, 1 1 0), 4.506(16, 0 4 0), 3.154(52, 3 1 0), 2.833(43, 3 3 0), 2.057(14, 2 0 2), 1.910(12, 5 1 0), 1.662(15, 4 6 1). The FTIR spectrum shows a broad band at about 950 cm–1 and no bands in the OH stretching region. The structure refinement led to a final R = 0.0210 for 1444 observed reflections with I > 2σ(I) and allowed cation site assignment and ordering. Microprobe analysis gave the following empirical formula calculated on the basis of 24 (O + F + Cl) apfu: (Na0.69K0.23□0.08)(Ca1.69Mg0.16Mn0.10Na0.05)Σ2(Fe2+2.86Mg2.04Ti0.10)Σ5(Si6.93Al1.05Ti0.02)Σ8O22(F1.89Cl0.09OH0.02)Σ2.

Abstract: In this work, we developed and characterized a novel fluidic platform that enables long-term in vitro cell culture in a semi-automated fashion. The system is constituted by a control unit provided with a piezoelectric pump, miniaturized valves, and a microfluidic network for management and fine control of reagents' flow, connected to a disposable polymeric culture unit resembling the traditional multiwell-like design. As a proof of principle, Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) and Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hMSC) were seeded and cultured into the cell culture unit. The proliferation rate of HUVEC and the osteogenic differentiation of hMSC were assessed and compared to standard culture in Petri dishes. The results obtained demonstrated that our approach is suitable to perform semi-automated cell culture protocols, minimizing the contribution of human operators and allowing the standardization and reproducibility of the procedures. We believe that the proposed system constitutes a promising solution for the realization of user-friendly automated control systems that will favor the standardization of cell culture processes for cell factories, drug testing, and biomedical research.

Abstract: Princivalleite, Na(Mn2Al)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O, is a new mineral (IMA2020-056) of the tourmaline supergroup. It occurs in the Veddasca Valley, Luino area, Varese, Lombardy, Italy (46°03’30.74’’N, 8°48’24.47’’E) at the centre of a narrow (2–3 cm wide) vertical pegmatitic vein, a few metres long, crosscutting a lens of flaser gneiss. Crystals are subhedral (up to 10 mm in size), azure with a vitreous lustre, conchoidal fracture and white streak. Princivalleite has a Mohs hardness of ~7, a calculated density of 3.168 g/cm3 and is uniaxial (–). Princivalleite has trigonal symmetry, space group R3m, a = 15.9155(2) Å, c = 7.11660(10) Å, V = 1561.15(4) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 1.36% using 1758 unique reflections collected with MoKα X-ray intensity data. Crystal-chemical analysis resulted in the empirical crystal-chemical formulaX(Na0.54Ca0.11□0.35)Σ1.00Y(Al1.82Mn2+0.84Fe2+0.19Zn0.07Li0.08)Σ3.00Z(Al5.85Fe2+0.13Mg0.02)Σ6.00[T(Si5.60Al0.40)Σ6.00O18](BO3)3O(3)[(OH)2.71O0.29]Σ3.00O(1)[O0.66F0.22(OH)0.12]Σ1.00 which recast in its ordered form for classification purposes is:X(Na0.54Ca0.11□0.35)Σ1.00Y(Al1.67Mn2+0.84Fe2+0.32Zn0.07Mg0.02Li0.08)Σ3.00ZAl6.00[T(Si5.60Al0.40)Σ6.00O18](BO3)3V[(OH)2.71O0.29]Σ3.00W[O0.66F0.22(OH)0.12]Σ1.00.Princivalleite is an oxy-species belonging to the alkali group of the tourmaline supergroup. The closest end-member compositions of valid tourmaline species are those of oxy-schorl and darrellhenryite, to which princivalleite is related by the substitutions Mn2+ ↔ Fe2+ and Mn2+ ↔ 0.5Al3+ + 0.5Li+, respectively. Princivalleite from Veddasca Valley is a geochemical anomaly, originated in a B-rich and peraluminous anatectic pegmatitic melt formed in situ, poor in Fe and characterised by reducing conditions in the late-stage metamorphic fluids derived by the flaser gneiss. The Mn-enrichment in this new tourmaline is due to absence of other minerals competing for Mn such as garnet.

Abstract: Measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization may reveal the presence of a background of gravitational waves produced during cosmic inflation, providing thus a test of inflationary models. The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is an experiment designed to measure the CMB polarization. It is based on the novel concept of bolometric interferometry, which combines the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the properties of beam synthesis and control of calibration offered by interferometers. To modulate and extract the input polarized signal of the CMB, QUBIC exploits Stokes polarimetry based on a rotating half-wave plate (HWP). In this work, we illustrate the design of the QUBIC instrument, focusing on the polarization modulation system, and we present preliminary results of beam calibrations and the performance of the HWP rotator at 300 K.

Abstract: In this study, an efficient methodology for manufacturing a realistic three-dimensional (3D) cerebrovascular phantom resembling a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) for applications in stereotactic radiosurgery is presented. The AVM vascular structure was 3D reconstructed from brain computed tomography (CT) data acquired from a patient. For the phantom fabrication, stereolithography was used to produce the AVM model and combined with silicone casting to mimic the brain parenchyma surrounding the vascular structure. This model was made with tissues-equivalent materials for radiology. The hollow vascular system of the phantom was filled with a contrast agent usually employed on patients for CT scans. The radiological response of the phantom was tested and compared with the one of the clinical case. The constructed model demonstrated to be a very accurate physical representation of the AVM and its vasculature and good morphological consistency was observed between the model and the patient-specific source anatomy. These results suggest that the proposed method has potential to be used to fabricate patient-specific phantoms for neurovascular radiosurgery applications and medical research.

Abstract: International audience; QUBIC (a Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is a next generation cosmology experiment designed to detect the B-mode polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). A B-mode detection is hard evidence of Inflation in the ΛCDM model. QUBIC aims to accomplish this by combining novel technologies to achieve the sensitivity required to detect the faint B-mode signal. QUBIC uses technologies such as a rotating half-wave plate, cryogenics, interferometric horns with self-calibration switches and transition edge sensor bolometers. A Technical Demonstrator (TD) is currently being calibrated in APC in Paris before observations in Argentina in 2021. As part of the calibration campaign, the spectral response of the TD is measured to test and validate QUBIC's spectro-imaging capability. This poster gives an overview of the methods used to measure the spectral response and a comparison of the instrument data with theoretical predictions and optical simulations.

Abstract: We present the synthesis and the characterization of a novel cellulose-based electroactive hydrogel obtained through a simple water-based process. Its swelling and electroactive properties are here studied especially in low salinity water solutions. By combining smart materials and three-dimensional printing technique, we assessed that hydrogels can be shaped as natural algae and their motion can be controlled with electric signals to mimic natural seaweed movements under the effect of water flow. This could constitute a first step toward the development of hybrid habitats where artificial smart algae could cohabit with real living organisms or microorganisms.

Abstract: Titanium is a typical trace to minor cation in tourmalines from granitic pegmatites. Tourmaline from Řecice, Třebic pluton (both Czech Republic) and Manjaka (Madagascar) shows significant Ti- enrichment. The examined Ti-rich tourmalines differ significantly in mineral assemblages and origin.

Abstract: QUBIC (Q \& U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is an international ground-based experiment dedicated in the measurement of the polarized fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). It is based on bolometric interferometry, an original detection technique which combine the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer with the sensitivity of low temperature incoherent detectors. QUBIC will be deployed in Argentina, at the Alto Chorrillos mountain site near San Antonio de los Cobres, in the Salta province. The QUBIC detection chain consists in 2048 NbSi Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) cooled to 350mK.The voltage-biased TESs are read out with Time Domain Multiplexing based on Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) at 1 K and a novel SiGe Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) at 60 K allowing to reach an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128. The QUBIC experiment is currently being characterized in the lab with a reduced number of detectors before upgrading to the full instrument. 27. Vránaite, ideally Al16B4Si4O38, a new mineral related to boralsilite, Al16B6Si2O37, from the Manjaka pegmatite, Sahatany Valley, Madagascar

Abstract: The system B2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 (BAS) includes two ternary phases occurring naturally, boromullite, Al9BSi2O19, and boralsilite, Al46B6Si2O37, as well as synthetic compounds structurally related to mullite. The new mineral vranaite, a third naturally occurring anhydrous ternary BAS phase, is found with albite and K-feldspar as a breakdown product of spodumene in the elbaite-subtype Manjaka granitic pegmatite, Sahatany Valley, Madagascar. Boralsilite also occurs in this association, although separately from vrnnaite; both minerals form rare aggregates of subparallel prisms up to 100 p.m long. Vranaite is monoclinic, space group 121m, a= 10.3832(12), b= 5.6682(7), c= 10.8228(12) angstrom, beta = 90.106(11)degrees; V= 636.97(13) angstrom(3), Z= 1. In the structure [R-1, = 0.0416 for 550 F-o> 4 sigma F-o], chains of A106 octahedra run parallel to [010] and are cross-linked by Si207 disilicate groups, B03 triangles, and clusters of A104 and two A105 polyhedra. If all sites were filled (Al4 and Al5 to 50%), the formula becomes Al16B4Si4O38, close to Li1.08Be0.47Fe0.02Al14 65B3.89Si3.88O36.62 calculated from the analyses assuming cations sum to 24. The compatibility index based on the Gladstone-Dale relationship is 0.001 ("superior"). Assemblages with vranaite and boralsilite are inferred to represent initial reaction products of a residual liquid rich in Li, Be, Na, K, and B during a pressure and chemical quench, but at low H2O activities due to early melt contamination by carbonate in the host rocks. The two BAS phases are interpreted to have crystallized metastably in lieu of dumortierite in accordance with Ostwald Step Rule, possibly first as "boron mullite," then as monoclinic phases. The presence of such metastable phases is suggestive that pegmatites crystallize, at least partially, by disequilibrium processes, with significant undercooling, and at high viscosities, which limit diffusion rates.

Abstract: We present a fluidic electrochemical sensor fabricated with an additive manufacturing approach based on the combination of fused filament fabrication (FFF), supersonic cluster beam deposition (SCBD) and selective electroplating. The system consists of a miniaturized three electrode electrochemical detection unit integrated into a polymer-based monolithic fluidic platform. SCBD is used to directly print functional working and counter gold electrodes with a large surface area and low electrical resistance onto the bottom surface of a fluidic channel, manufactured by means of consumer-grade FFF. SCBD is also employed to pattern a conductive gold line into the channel, over which an Ag/AgCl quasi-reference electrode is then selectively electroplated. An optimized overprinting procedure is then implemented to seal the channel, guaranteeing the packaging of the system. The fluidic sensor was tested with standard electrochemistry techniques by using the redox couple potassium ferricyanide/potassium ferrocyanide as a probe, both in static and dynamic flow conditions. The sensor showed a reproducible electrochemical behavior, high sensitivity, and a convection rate-dependent response. The proposed manufacturing strategy has potential for the production of integrated fluidic devices for online electrochemical detection and analysis for bio-sensing applications.

Abstract: QUBIC, the Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, is a novel ground-based instrument that aims to measure the extremely faint B-mode polarisation anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background at intermediate angular scales (multipoles of = 30 − 200). Primordial B-modes are a key prediction of Inflation as they can only be produced by gravitational waves in the very early universe. To achieve this goal, QUBIC will use bolometric interferometry, a technique that combines the sensitivity of an imager with the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer. It will directly observe the sky through an array of back-to-back entry horns whose beams will be superimposed using a cooled quasioptical beam combiner. Images of the resulting interference fringes will be formed on two focal planes, each tiled with transition-edge sensors, cooled down to 320 mK. A dichroic filter placed between the optical combiner and the focal planes will select two frequency bands (centred at 150 GHz and 220 GHz), one frequency per focal plane. Polarization modulation will be achieved using a cold stepped half-wave plate (HWP) and polariser in front of the sky-facing horns. The full QUBIC instrument is described elsewhere1,2,3,4; in this paper we will concentrate in particular on simulations of the optical combiner (an off-axis Gregorian imager) and the feedhorn array. We model the optical performance of both the QUBIC full module and a scaled-down technological demonstrator which will be used to validate the full instrument design. Optical modelling is carried out using full vector physical optics with a combination of commercial and in-house software. In the high-frequency channel we must be careful to consider the higher-order modes that can be transmitted by the horn array. The instrument window function is used as a measure of performance and we investigate the effect of, for example, alignment and manufacturing tolerances, truncation by optical components and off-axis aberrations. We also report on laboratory tests carried on the QUBIC technological demonstrator in advance of deployment to the observing site in Argentina.

Abstract: International audience; QUBIC (the Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is a ground-based experiment which seeks to improve the current constraints on the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves. It exploits the unique technique, among Cosmic Microwave Background experiments, of bolometric interferometry, combining together the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the control of systematic effects typical of interferometers. QUBIC will perform sky observations in polarization, in two frequency bands centered at 150 and 220 GHz, with two kilo-pixel focal plane arrays of NbSi Transition-Edge Sensors (TES) cooled down to 350 mK. A subset of the QUBIC instrument, the so called QUBIC Technological Demonstrator (TD), with a reduced number of detectors with respect to the full instrument, will be deployed and commissioned before the end of 2018. The voltage-biased TES are read out with Time Domain Multiplexing and an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128. This MUX factor is reached with two-stage multiplexing: a traditional one exploiting Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) at 1K and a novel SiGe Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) at 60 K. The former provides a MUX factor of 32, while the latter provides a further 4. Each TES array is composed of 256 detectors and read out with four modules of 32 SQUIDs and two ASICs. A custom software synchronizes and manages the readout and detector operation, while the TES are sampled at 780 Hz (100kHz/128 MUX rate). In this work we present the experimental characterization of the QUBIC TES arrays and their multiplexing readout chain, including time constant, critical temperature, and noise properties.

Abstract: QUBIC, the Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, is a novel ground-based instrument that has been designed to measure the extremely faint B-mode polarisation anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background at intermediate angular scales (multipoles of 𝑙 = 30 − 200). Primordial B-modes are a key prediction of Inflation as they can only be produced by gravitational waves in the very early universe. To achieve this goal, QUBIC will use bolometric interferometry, a technique that combines the sensitivity of an imager with the systematic error control of an interferometer. It will directly observe the sky through an array of 400 back-to-back entry horns whose signals will be superimposed using a quasi-optical beam combiner. The resulting interference fringes will be imaged at 150 and 220 GHz on two focal planes, each tiled with NbSi Transition Edge Sensors, cooled to 320 mK and read out with time-domain multiplexing. A dichroic filter placed between the optical combiner and the focal planes will select the two frequency bands. A very large receiver cryostat will cool the optical and detector stages to 40 K, 4 K, 1 K and 320 mK using two pulse tube coolers, a novel 4He sorption cooler and a double-stage 3He/4He sorption cooler. Polarisation modulation and selection will be achieved using a cold stepped half-wave plate (HWP) and polariser, respectively, in front of the sky-facing horns. A key feature of QUBIC’s ability to control systematic effects is its ‘self-calibration’ mode where fringe patterns from individual equivalent baselines can be compared. When observing, however, all the horns will be open simultaneously and we will recover a synthetic image of the sky in the I, Q and U Stokes’ parameters. The synthesised beam pattern has a central peak of approximately 0.5 degrees in width, with secondary peaks further out that are damped by the 13-degree primary beam of the horns. This is Module 1 of QUBIC which will be installed in Argentina, near the city of San Antonio de los Cobres, at the Alto Chorrillos site (4869 m a.s.l.), Salta Province. Simulations have shown that this first module could constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio down to σ(r) = 0.01 after a two-year survey. We aim to add further modules in the future to increase the angular sensitivity and resolution of the instrument. The QUBIC project is proceeding through a sequence of steps. After an initial successful characterisation of the detection chain, a technological demonstrator is being assembled to validate the full instrument design and to test it electrically, thermally and optically. The technical demonstrator is a scaled-down version of Module 1 in terms of the number of detectors, input horns and pulse tubes and a reduction in the diameter of the combiner mirrors and filters, but is otherwise similar. The demonstrator will be upgraded to the full module in 2019. In this paper we give an overview of the QUBIC project and instrument.

Abstract: International audience; Remnant radiation from the early universe, known as the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), has been redshifted and cooled, and today has a blackbody spectrum peaking at millimetre wavelengths. The QUBIC (Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) instrument is designed to map the very faint polaristion structure in the CMB. QUBIC is based on the novel concept of bolometric interferometry in conjunction with synthetic imaging. It will have a large array of input feedhorns, which creates a large number of interferometric baselines. The beam from each feedhorn is passed through an optical combiner, with an off-axis compensated Gregorian design, to allow the generation of the synthetic image. The optical-combiner will operate in two frequency bands (150 and 220 GHz with 25% and 18.2 % bandwidth respectively) while cryogenically cooled TES bolometers provide the sensitivity required at the image plane. The QUBIC Technical Demonstrator (TD), a proof of technology instrument that contains 64 input feed-horns, is currently being built and will be installed in the Alto Chorrillos region of Argentina. The plan is then for the full QUBIC instrument (400 feed-horns) to be deployed in Argentina and obtain cosmologically significant results. In this paper we will examine the output of the manufactered feed-horns in comparison to the nominal design. We will show the results of optical modelling that has been performed in anticipation of alignment and calibration of the TD in Paris, in particular testing the validity of real laboratory environments. We show the output of large calibrator sources (50 ° full width haf max Gaussian beams) and the importance of accurate mirror definitions when modelling large beams. Finally we describe the tolerance on errors of the position and orientation of mirrors in the optical combiner.

Abstract: In the early 2000s, an exceptional discovery of gem-quality multi-coloured tourmalines, hosted in Litium-Cesium-Tantalum (LCT) pegmatites, was made in the Adamello Massif, Italy. Gem-quality tourmalines had never been found before in the Alps, and this new pegmatitic deposit is of particular interest and worthy of a detailed characterization. We studied a suite of faceted samples by classical gemmological methods, and fragments were studied with Synchrotron X-ray computed micro-tomography, which evidenced the occurrence of inclusions, cracks and voids. Electron Microprobe combined with Laser Ablation analyses were performed to determine major, minor and trace element contents. Selected samples were analysed by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. The specimens range in colour from colourless to yellow, pink, orange, light blue, green, amber, brownish-pink, purple and black. Chemically, the tourmalines range from fluor-elbaite to fluor-liddicoatite and rossmanite: these chemical changes occur in the same sample and affect the colour. Rare Earth Elements (REE) vary from 30 to 130 ppm with steep Light Rare Earth Elemts (LREE)-enriched patterns and a negative Eu-anomaly. Structural data confirmed the elbaitic composition and showed that high manganese content may induce the local static disorder at the O(1) anion site, coordinating the Y cation sites occupied, on average, by Li, Al and Mn2+ in equal proportions, confirming previous findings. In addition to the gemmological value, the crystal-chemical studies of tourmalines are unanimously considered to be a sensitive recorder of the geological processes leading to their formation, and therefore, this study may contribute to understanding the evolution of the pegmatites related to the intrusion of the Adamello pluton.

Abstract: International audience; QUBIC, the QU Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, is a novel forthcoming instrument to measure the B-mode polarization anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The detection of the B-mode signal will be extremely challenging; QUBIC has been designed to address this with a novel approach, namely bolometric interferometry. The receiver cryostat is exceptionally large and cools complex optical and detector stages to 40 K, 4 K, 1 K and 350 mK using two pulse tube coolers, a novel 4He sorption cooler and a double-stage 3He/4He sorption cooler. We discuss the thermal and mechanical design of the cryostat, modelling and thermal analysis, and laboratory cryogenic testing.

Abstract: Boralsilite Al16B6Si2O37 and Li,Be-bearing “boron mullite” Al8B2Si2O19 were discovered as breakdown products of spodumene from the elbaite-subtype Manjaka granitic pegmatite, Sahatany Valley, Madagascar. The pegmatite mineral assemblage is relatively simple (Ab + Qz > Kfs > Tur + Spd > Ap + several accessory B-rich phases). This pegmatite forms an E–W-trending elongated body emplaced in an Mg-rich calc-silicate rock; the pegmatite exocontact locally contains thin reaction zones (Tur+Phl±Brl). Boralsilite assemblages are closely associated with prismatic spodumene crystals, up to 10 cm long, mostly as narrow albite > K-feldspar zones (albite > K-feldspar > boralsilite > “boron mullite”), up to ∼0.5 mm thick, or rarely as inclusions in the central parts of spodumene crystals. Long prismatic crystals and fibers of boralsilite, up to 200 μm long, and rare elongated grains of “boron mullite” Al8B2Si2O19, up to 100 μm long, are mostly enclosed in albite and rarely in K-feldspar. The EMP and LA-ICP-MS data yielded relatively variable Al/Si ratios (∼5.4–9.8; ∼3.2–4.6) and concentrations of B (∼48500–59500; ∼24000–28000 ppm), Li (688–1433; 3339–4287 ppm), and Be (288–1082; 1017–2728 ppm), in boralsilite and “boron mullite”, respectively. Textural relations of the boralsilite assemblage assuming immobile Al suggest the hypothetical reaction: 46 LiAlSi2O6 + 30 Na+ (melt/aq.) + 6 H3BO3 = Al16B6Si2O37 + 30 NaAlSi3O8 + 46 Li+ (melt/aq.) + 9 H2O + 4 O2; part of the Li may have entered rare secondary clay minerals and partly also the “boron mullite”, but most of the Li was mobilized. Fluid/melt with very high a (B2O3), a (Na), and low a (H2O), along with high a (CO2) indicated by the absence of significant amount of hydrous phases, very minor extent of exocontact reactions along the pegmatite, and secondary rhodochrosite, are responsible for the origin of boralsilite. Very late solidus or early subsolidus conditions at temperature ∼350–450 °C and pressure ∼2–3 kbar, estimated for the crystallization of the assemblage albite + boralsilite, are significantly lower than those given for fibrous boralsilite at other localities of mostly anatectic granitic pegmatites (Larsemann Hills, Antarctica; Almgjotheii, Norway; and Horni Bory, Czech Republic).

Abstract: Fe^(2+)- and Mn^(2+)-rich tourmalines were used to test whether Fe^(2+) and Mn^(2+) substitute on the Z site of tourmaline to a detectable degree. Fe-rich tourmaline from a pegmatite from Lower Austria was characterized by crystal-structure refinement, chemical analyses, and Mössbauer and optical spectroscopy. The sample has large amounts of Fe^(2+) (~2.3 apfu), and substantial amounts of Fe^(3+) (~1.0 apfu). On basis of the collected data, the structural refinement and the spectroscopic data, an initial formula was determined by assigning the entire amount of Fe^(3+) (no delocalized electrons) and Ti^(4+) to the Z site and the amount of Fe^(2+) and Fe^(3+) from delocalized electrons to the Y-Z ED doublet (delocalized electrons between Y-Z and Y-Y): X(Na_(0.9)Ca_(0.1)) ^Y(Fe^(2+)_(2.0)Al_(0.4)Mn^(2+)_(0.3)Fe^(3+)_(0.2)) ^Z(Al_(4.8)Fe^(3+)_(0.8)Fe^(2+)_(0.2)Ti^(4+)_(0.1)) ^T(Si_(5.9)Al_(0.1))O_(18) (BO_3)_3^V(OH)_3 ^W[O_(0.5)F_(0.3)(OH)_(0.2)] with α = 16.039(1) and c = 7.254(1) Å. This formula is consistent with lack of Fe^(2+) at the Z site, apart from that occupancy connected with delocalization of a hopping electron. The formula was further modified by considering two ED doublets to yield: ^X(Na_(0.9)Ca_(0.1)) ^Y(Fe^(2+)_(1.8)Al_(0.5)Mn^(2+)_(0.3)Fe^(3+)_(0.3)) ^Z(Al_(4.8)Fe^(3+)_(0.7)Fe^(2+)_(0.4)Ti^(4+)_(0.1)) ^T(Si_(5.9_Al_(0.1))O_(18) (BO_3)_3 ^V(OH)_3 ^W[O_(0.5)F_(0.3)(OH)_(0.2)]. This formula requires some Fe^(2+) (~0.3 apfu) at the Z site, apart from that connected with delocalization of a hopping electron. Optical spectra were recorded from this sample as well as from two other Fe^(2+)-rich tourmalines to determine if there is any evidence for Fe^(2+) at Y and Z sites. If Fe^(2+) were to occupy two different 6-coordinated sites in significant amounts and if these polyhedra have different geometries or metal-oxygen distances, bands from each site should be observed. However, even in high-quality spectra we see no evidence for such a doubling of the bands. We conclude that there is no ultimate proof for Fe^(2+) at the Z site, apart from that occupancy connected with delocalization of hopping electrons involving Fe cations at the Y and Z sites. A very Mn-rich tourmaline from a pegmatite on Elba Island, Italy, was characterized by crystal-structure determination, chemical analyses, and optical spectroscopy. The optimized structural formula is ^X(Na_(0.6)□_(0.4)) ^Y(Mn^(2+)_(1.3)Al_(1.2)Li_(0.5)) ^ZAl_6 ^TSi_6O_(18) (BO_3)_3 ^V(OH)_3 ^W[F_(0.5)O_(0.5)], with α = 15.951(2) and c = 7.138(1) Å. Within a 3σ error there is no evidence for Mn occupancy at the Z site by refinement of Al ↔ Mn, and, thus, no final proof for Mn^(2+) at the Z site, either. Oxidation of these tourmalines at 700–750 °C and 1 bar for 10–72 h converted Fe^(2+) to Fe^(3+) and Mn^(2+) to Mn^(3+) with concomitant exchange with Al of the Z site. The refined ^ZFe content in the Fe-rich tourmaline increased by ~40% relative to its initial occupancy. The refined YFe content was smaller and the distance was significantly reduced relative to the unoxidized sample. A similar effect was observed for the oxidized Mn^(2+)-rich tourmaline. Simultaneously, H and F were expelled from both samples as indicated by structural refinements, and H expulsion was indicated by infrared spectroscopy. The final species after oxidizing the Fe^(2+)-rich tourmaline is buergerite. Its color had changed from blackish to brown-red. After oxidizing the Mn^(2+)-rich tourmaline, the previously dark yellow sample was very dark brown-red, as expected for the oxidation of Mn^(2+) to Mn^(3+). The unit-cell parameter α decreased during oxidation whereas the c parameter showed a slight increase.

Abstract: Pegmatites are sources of gem-quality crystals of beryl, tourmaline, topaz, spodumene, and spessartine. Historic localities are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, and the United States, but important deposits have recently been discovered in Africa and Asia. Most high-quality gem minerals occur in miarolitic cavities found near the centers of pegmatite bodies or in reaction zones between pegmatites and ultramafic host rocks. The most important gem-bearing granitic pegmatites formed at shallow levels in the continental crust during the latest stages of collisional plate tectonic events. Single, spectacular miarolitic cavities in some pegmatites have produced tons of gem crystals valued in excess of $50 million.

Abstract: With their multitude of colors, gem tourmalines are among the most popular colored gemstones. Spectacular color-zoned tourmalines are valued as gems and crystal specimens, and some complexly zoned crystals contain nearly the entire spectrum of color variation found in the mineral world. The top-quality “neon” blue-to-green, copper-bearing tourmaline, the Paraiba-type , is one of the highest-priced colored gemstones, with values comparable to those of some diamonds. The wide variety and intensity of colors are related primarily to color-producing ions in the structure and to exposure to natural radiation. Gem tourmalines that form in magmatic, pegmatitic environments are most commonly elbaite and fluor-liddicoatite species, and the rarer gem tourmalines that develop in metamorphic rocks are generally dravite–uvite species.

Abstract: Two sequences of crystallization involving oxides of Nb–Ta occurred during the albitization process of three emerald-bearing pegmatites that cut serpentinites at Mount Pizzo Marcio and Alpe Rosso, in Vigezzo Valley, Western Alps, Italy: 1) a higher-temperature sequence, characterized by an alkaline micro-environment [high a (Na + )], allowing the crystallization of Mg-rich columbite, vigezzite, thorian vigezzite and U-rich microlite, and 2) a lower-temperature sequence, characterized by high a (Ca 2+ ), producing replacements of tapiolite-(Fe) and ferrowodginite by microlite, of tantalite-(Mn) by microlite and (later) fersmite, and of columbite-(Mn) by fersmite. Chromium-bearing beryl crystals (emerald) occur along the exocontacts characterized by a green to grey, sheared micaceous unit composed of phlogopite + talc + tremolite. Beryl crystals commonly show a green Cr-rich vitreous rim and a whitish milky core, partially replaced by beryllium silicates such as bavenite, bertrandite and bityite. Tourmaline crystals vary from schorl–dravite to Fe-rich dravite. In the model of evolution envisaged, we propose an anatectic origin of the pegmatite-forming melts during the latest stages of the Alpine tectonometamorphic event. The emplacement of the pegmatitic dikes in the serpentinites was followed by intense circulation of supercritical to hydrothermal fluids enriched in Mg, B and Be, and depleted in F, producing albitization of pegmatites and generating the aforementioned mineral reactions and replacements.

Abstract: Les filons de pegmatite granitique enrichie en elements rares a Anjanabonoina, situe environ 40 km au sud-ouest de Betafo, dans la zone centrale du Madagascar, sont mis en place dans un encaissant complexe de paragneiss, de marbre et d'orthogneiss du groupe neoproterozoique d'Itremo, a degre de metamorphisme moyen. Ces venues subhorizontales sont fortement zonees; dans la zone mineralisee de Sarodivotra, elles montrent un riche assemblage paragenetique dans lequel se trouvent des mineraux accessoires riches en Nb-Ti-Ta. Nous reconnaissons deux generations de mineraux des groupes pyrochlore et columbite. Ils ont un rapport Nb:Ta eleve, avec predominance de phases a dominance de Nb et Ti, et un rare developpement tardif de phases enrichies en Ta. Les cristaux de la premiere generation, a dominance de Nb (1.20-1.23 apfu), sont du pyrochlore, tandis que ceux de la seconde generation, plutot a dominance de Ti, sont de la betafite uranifere (0.29-0.57 apfu U) ou localement du pyrochlore. Les mineraux primaires sont typiques d'une pegmatite de type NYF, en contraste avec la mineralogie de type LCT (abondance d'elbaite-liddicoatite, une variete rose de beryl, spodumene, et hambergite) typique de la plus grande partie des affleurements a Anjanabonoina. Les gros cristaux de pyrochlore de la premiere generation ont subi une alteration primaire, a temperature elevee, a cause de la circulation de fluides hydrothermaux, menant a la substitution A Ca Y O → A □ Y □ pres du noyau, et ensuite une alteration secondaire, a plus basse temperature, le long de fractures et de la bordure, menant au developpement accru de lacunes. Les cristaux de la seconde generation sont encore plus alteres. Le mineral du groupe de la columbite, la fersmite, s'est aussi forme en deux generations et par exsolution dans le pyrochlore. De facon plus rare, la fersmite a remplace le pyrochlore dans les cristaux de seconde generation. Nous utilisons les mineraux des groupes du pyrochlore et de la columbite afin de mesurer l'evolution magmatique et les evenements postmagmatiques lies a la circulation de fluides hydrothermaux et au lessivage.

Abstract: 28 LIDDICOATITE FROM MADAGASCAR GEMS & GEMOLOGY SPRING 2002 three lithium tourmalines with the general formula (Ca,Na,K, )(Li,Al)3Al6Si6O18(BO3)3(OH)3(OH,F), which are defined on the basis of their X-site occupancy: Ca = liddicoatite, Na = elbaite, and a vacant ( ) X site = rossmanite. Elbaite is the most abundant gem tourmaline, whereas rossmanite has so far been identified from few localities (Johnson and Koivula, 1998b; Selway et al., 1998), and typically is not of gem quality. However, neither can be separated from liddicoatite without quantitative chemical analysis. Therefore, in this article we use the group name tourmaline to refer to material that has not been chemically analyzed. Although liddicoatite is well characterized mineralogically, little has been published about the history, sources, and gemology of this tourmaline species in particular. 49. LONDONITE, A NEW MINERAL SPECIES: THE Cs-DOMINANT ANALOGUE OF RHODIZITE FROM THE ANTANDROKOMBY GRANITIC PEGMATITE, MADAGASCAR

Abstract: Londonite, (Cs,K,Rb) Al 4 Be 4 (B,Be) 12 O 28 , is the Cs-dominant analogue of rhodizite. It occurs with rhodizite at Antandrokomby, a dike of granitic pegmatite in the Manandona valley, Antsirabe region, and at Ampanivana and Antsongombato, in the Betafo region south of Mahaiza, all in Madagascar. Londonite occurs in the inner zones and in miarolitic cavities of highly evolved pegmatites rich in red tourmaline. Associated minerals include microcline, quartz, albite, tourmaline (elbaite – liddicoatite – schorl series), Cs-rich beryl, spodumene, danburite, Mn-rich fluorapatite, hambergite, microlite, manganocolumbite, manganotantalite, behierite, and hafnian zircon, among others. Londonite occurs as equidimensional crystals a few millimeters across, and exceptionally up to 7 cm. The dominant morphology is dodecahedral {110} and rare deltoid dodecahedral {221}, modified by tristetrahedral {211}, tetrahedral {111} and very rare cube {100} faces. Crystals are colorless to white to yellow, with a white streak. The luster is vitreous. Crystals are translucent to transparent. Optically, the mineral is isotropic, with an index of refraction of 1.693. Mohs hardness is 8. It has no cleavage or parting, and is brittle with a conchoidal fracture. Its density is 3.34 g/cm 3 (meas.) and 3.42 g/cm 3 (calc.). Londonite is isometric with space group P 43 m. The cell parameters are: a 7.321 (1) A, V 392.30 A 3 , and Z = 1. The three strongest X-ray powder-diffraction lines measured for londonite [ d in A( I )( hkl )] are 2.9898(100)(211), 2.1132(70)(222), and 2.4410(50)(300,221). Electron-microprobe analyses reveal a wide range of K and Cs contents and an overall low abundance of Rb. The empirical formula based on 28 atoms of oxygen and calculated from an average of five analyses from Antandrokomby is: (Cs 0.48 K 0.38 Rb 0.09 Na 0.03 Ca 0.02 Mn 0.01 ) ∑1.01 (Al 3.98 Li 0.02 Fe 0.01 ) ∑4.01 Be 4 [(B 10.99 Si 0.01 ) ∑11.00 Be 1 ] ∑12.00 O 28 , with the proportion of B and Be fixed by stoichiometry. The mineral is named after David London, Professor of Geology and Geophysics, University of Oklahoma, in recognition of his experimental studies of evolved granitic melts and his contributions to our understanding of the origin of granitic pegmatites.

50. Schiavinatoite, (Nb,Ta)BO4, the Nb analogue of behierite

Abstract: The new mineral schiavinatoite (Nb, Ta) BO 4 , the niobium analogue of behierite, has been found in a boronrich pegmatite at Antsongombato, south of Betafo, in the Malagasy Republic, as portions of a greyish-pink bipyramidal crystal of Nb-rich behierite. Associated minerals are rhodizite, liddicoatite, spodumene, pollucite, danburite, apatite. The mineral is tetragonal, space group I 4 1 / amd , isostructural with behierite (zircon-type), with a = 6.219(5), c = 5.487(5) A, V = 212.2(5) A 3 , Z = 4, D calc = 6.548 g/cm 3 . The strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [d in A (I, hkl)] are: 4.115(100,101), 3.110(84,200), 2.328(49,112), 1.598(42,312), 2.481(36, 211), 1.939(29,301), 1.646(25,321). Mohs9s hardness is 8. Luster is vitreous, transparent in thin section, streak is white, the crystal is uniaxial (+) with average n = 2.30(5). The structure has been refined from single-crystal data, using 178 observed unique reflections to R = 0.011, R w = 0.014.
