The semiconductor ReSe$_2$ is characterized by a strongly anisotropic optical absorption and is therefore promising as an optically active component in two-dimensional heterostructures. However, the underlying femtosecond dynamics of photoinduced excitations in such materials has not been sufficiently explored. Here, we apply an infrared optical excitation to single-layer ReSe$_2$ grown on a bilayer graphene substrate and monitor the temporal evolution of the excited state signal using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We measure an optical gap of $(1.53 \pm 0.02)$ eV, consistent with resonant excitation of the lowest exciton state. The exciton distribution is tunable via the linear polarization of the pump pulse and exhibits a biexponential decay with time constants given by $\tau_1 = (110 \pm 10)$ fs and $\tau_2 = (650 \pm 70)$ fs, facilitated by recombination via an in-gap state that is pinned at the Fermi level. By extracting the momentum-resolved exciton distribution we estimate its real-space radial extent to be greater than 17.1 \AA, implying significant exciton delocalization due to screening from the bilayer graphene substrate., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Heterostructures composed of the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and its non-magnetic counterpart Bi$_2$Te$_3$ host distinct surface band structures depending on the stacking order and exposed termination, allowing fine control of their magnetic, electronic and optical properties. Here, we probe the ultrafast dynamical response of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ following near-infrared optical excitation using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We gain access to the out-of-equilibrium surface electronic structure of both MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ surface terminations of MnBi$_4$Te$_7$, revealing an instantaneous occupation of states that are resonant with the optical excitation in the Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layer followed by carrier extraction into the adjacent MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ layers with a laser fluence-tunable delay of up to 350 fs. The ensuing thermal relaxation processes are driven by in-plane phonon scattering with significantly slower relaxation times in the magnetic MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ septuple layers. The competition of interlayer charge transfer and intralayer phonon scattering establishes MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-based compounds as a platform for controlling ultrafast charge transfer processes in combination with magnetism and topology in van der Waals heterostructures., 17 pages, 4 figures

Dimensionality plays a key role in the emergence of ordered phases, such as charge density-waves (CDW), which can couple to, and modulate, the topological properties of matter. In this work, we study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the paradigmatic quasi-one-dimensional material (TaSe

In this work, we study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the paradigmatic quasi-one-dimensional material (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I, that exhibits a transition into an incommensurate CDW phase when cooled just below room temperature, namely at T$_{\rm{CDW}} $= 263 K. We make use of both optical laser and free-electron laser (FEL) based time-resolved spectroscopies in order to study the effect of a selective excitation on the normal-state and on the CDW phases, by probing the near-infrared/visible optical properties both along and perpendicularly to the direction of the CDW, where the system is metallic and insulating, respectively. Excitation of the core-levels by ultrashort X-ray FEL pulses at 47 eV and 119 eV induces reflectivity transients resembling those recorded when only exciting the valence band of the compound - by near-infrared pulses at 1.55 eV - in the case of the insulating sub-system. Conversely, the metallic sub-system displays a relaxation dynamics which depends on the energy of photo-excitation. Moreover, excitation of the CDW amplitude mode is recorded only for excitation at low-photon-energy. This fact suggests that the coupling of light to ordered states of matter can predominantly be achieved when directly injecting delocalized carriers in the valence band, rather than localized excitations in the core levels. On a complementary side, table-top experiments allow us to prove the quasi-unidirectional nature of the CDW phase in (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I, whose fingerprints are detected along its $c$-axis only. Our results provide new insights on the symmetry of the ordered phase of (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I perturbed by a selective excitation, and suggest a novel approach based on complementary table-top and FEL spectroscopies for the study of complex materials., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

Significance Here we establish femtosecond covariance spectroscopy as a technique that uses ultrashort stochastic light pulses to measure nonlinear material responses. By using pulses with spectrally uncorrelated fluctuations we can leverage on the noise and consider each repetition of the experiment as a measurement under different conditions. In this limit we demonstrate that nonlinear processes in the sample can be retrieved by measuring the spectral correlations in different pulses. We validate the approach by studying stimulated Raman scattering in α-quartz. This concept can be applied to reveal low-energy modes of electronic, spin, and vibrational origin and adapted to different techniques and wavelength ranges, from optical to X-ray free-electron lasers, where strong stochastic fluctuations are unavoidable., The success of nonlinear optics relies largely on pulse-to-pulse consistency. In contrast, covariance-based techniques used in photoionization electron spectroscopy and mass spectrometry have shown that a wealth of information can be extracted from noise that is lost when averaging multiple measurements. Here, we apply covariance-based detection to nonlinear optical spectroscopy, and show that noise in a femtosecond laser is not necessarily a liability to be mitigated, but can act as a unique and powerful asset. As a proof of principle we apply this approach to the process of stimulated Raman scattering in α-quartz. Our results demonstrate how nonlinear processes in the sample can encode correlations between the spectral components of ultrashort pulses with uncorrelated stochastic fluctuations. This in turn provides richer information compared with the standard nonlinear optics techniques that are based on averages over many repetitions with well-behaved laser pulses. These proof-of-principle results suggest that covariance-based nonlinear spectroscopy will improve the applicability of fs nonlinear spectroscopy in wavelength ranges where stable, transform-limited pulses are not available, such as X-ray free-electron lasers which naturally have spectrally noisy pulses ideally suited for this approach.

FeSe x Te 1 − x compounds display a rich phase diagram, ranging from the nematicity of FeSe to the ( π , π ) magnetism of FeTe. We focus on FeSe0.4Te0.6, and exploit tr-ARPES to study its ultrafast electron dynamics following photoexcitation by near-infrared pump pulses. By exploiting probe-polarization-dependent matrix element effects, we reveal a photoinduced long-lived state, lasting for a few tens of picoseconds, showing features compatible with a nematic state. The possibility to induce a long-lived state in this compound by using ultra-short pulses might shed a new light on the driving force behind the nematic symmetry breaking in iron-based superconductors. With the aid of a phenomenological model, we illustrate how our results possibly question the common belief that a low-energy coupling with fluctuations is a necessary condition to stabilize the nematic order. On the contrary, the tendency towards orbital differentiation due to strong electronic correlations induced by the Hund’s coupling could be at the origin of the nematic order in iron-based superconductors.

Time-resolved optical spectroscopy (TR-OS) has emerged as a fundamental spectroscopic tool for probing complex materials, to both investigate ground-state-related properties and trigger phase transitions among different states with peculiar electronic and lattice structures. We describe a versatile approach to perform polarization-resolved TR-OS measurements, by combining broadband detection with the capability to simultaneously probe two orthogonal polarization states. This method allows us to probe, with femtoseconds resolution, the frequency-resolved reflectivity or transmittivity variations along two mutually orthogonal directions, matching the principal axis of the crystal structure of the material under scrutiny. We report on the results obtained by acquiring the polarization-dependent transient reflectivity of two polytypes of the MoTe2 compound, with 2H and 1T’ crystal structures. We reveal marked anisotropies in the time-resolved reflectivity signal of 1T’-MoTe2, which are connected to the crystal structure of the compound. Polarization- and time- resolved spectroscopic measurements can thus provide information about the nature and dynamics of both the electronic and crystal lattice subsystems, advancing the comprehension of their inter-dependence, in particular in the case of photoinduced phase transitions; in addition, they provide a broadband measurement of transient polarization rotations.

The quest for mapping the femtosecond dynamics of the electronic band structure of complex materials over their full first Brillouin zone is pushing the development of schemes to efficiently generate ultrashort photon pulses in the VUV energy range. At present, the critical aspect in time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) is to combine a high photon energy with high photoemission count rates and a narrow pulse-bandwidth, necessary to achieve high energy resolution, while preserving a good time resolution and mitigating space-charge effects. Here we describe a novel approach to produce light pulses at 10.8 eV, combining high repetition rate operation (1–4 MHz), high energy resolution ( ∼ 26 meV) and space-charge free operation, with a time-resolution of ∼ 700 fs. These results have been achieved by generating the ninth harmonic of a Yb fiber laser, through a phase-matched process of third harmonic generation in Xenon of the laser third harmonic. The full up-conversion process is driven by a seed pulse energy as low as 10 μ J, hence is easily scalable to multi-MHz operation. This source opens the way to TR-ARPES experiments for the investigation of the electron dynamics over the full first Brillouin zone of most complex materials, with unprecedented energy and momentum resolutions and high count rates. The performances of the setup are tested by TR-ARPES on the topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 .

Unveiling the physics that governs the intertwining between the nanoscale self-organization and the dynamics of insulator-to-metal transitions (IMTs) is key for controlling on demand the ultrafast switching in strongly correlated materials and nanodevices. A paradigmatic case is the IMT in ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$, for which the mechanism that leads to the nucleation and growth of metallic nanodroplets out of the supposedly homogeneous Mott insulating phase is still a mystery. Here, we combine x-ray photoemission electron microscopy and ultrafast nonequilibrium optical spectroscopy to investigate the early-stage dynamics of isolated metallic nanodroplets across the IMT in ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ thin films. Our experiments show that the low-temperature monoclinic antiferromagnetic insulating phase is characterized by the spontaneous formation of striped polydomains, with different lattice distortions. The insulating domain boundaries accommodate the birth of metallic nanodroplets, whose nonequilibrium expansion can be triggered by the photoinduced change of the $3d$-orbital occupation. We address the relation between the spontaneous nanotexture of the Mott insulating phase in ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and the timescale of the metallic seeds growth. We speculate that the photoinduced metallic growth can proceed along a nonthermal pathway in which the monoclinic lattice symmetry of the insulating phase is partially retained.

Here we show how time-resolved broadband optical spectroscopy can be used to quantify, with femtometer resolution, the oscillation amplitudes of coherent phonons through a displacive model without free tuning parameters, except an overall scaling factor determined by comparison between experimental data and density functional theory calculations. $WTe_2$ is used to benchmark this approach. In this semimetal, the response is anisotropic and provides the spectral fingerprints of two $A_1$ optical phonons at $\sim$8 and $\sim$80 $cm^-$$^1$. A novel ultrafast photoemission technique unveils the Mottness of antinodal quasiparticles in superconducting copper oxides., Many puzzling properties of high–critical temperature (Tc) superconducting (HTSC) copper oxides have deep roots in the nature of the antinodal quasiparticles, the elementary excitations with wave vector parallel to the Cu–O bonds. These electronic states are most affected by the onset of antiferromagnetic correlations and charge instabilities, and they host the maximum of the anisotropic superconducting gap and pseudogap. We use time-resolved extreme-ultraviolet photoemission with proper photon energy (18 eV) and time resolution (50 fs) to disclose the ultrafast dynamics of the antinodal states in a prototypical HTSC cuprate. After photoinducing a nonthermal charge redistribution within the Cu and O orbitals, we reveal a dramatic momentum-space differentiation of the transient electron dynamics. Whereas the nodal quasiparticle distribution is heated up as in a conventional metal, new quasiparticle states transiently emerge at the antinodes, similarly to what is expected for a photoexcited Mott insulator, where the frozen charges can be released by an impulsive excitation. This transient antinodal metallicity is mapped into the dynamics of the O-2p bands, thus directly demonstrating the intertwining between the low- and high-energy scales that is typical of correlated materials. Our results suggest that the correlation-driven freezing of the electrons moving along the Cu–O bonds, analogous to the Mott localization mechanism, constitutes the starting point for any model of high-Tc superconductivity and other exotic phases of HTSC cuprates.

Here we report on experiments performed by linear-dichroism angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (LD-ARPES) on septuple layers (SL) topological insulator GeBi2Te4. The linear dichroic signals, both for the valence band states and in the topologically protected surface state are interpreted as a probe of the symmetry of the states. The observation of a change in the LD-ARPES spectrum at the top of VB is attributed to the band parity inversion which is predicted by theory for all materials entering the topologically protected phase. Finally, the opening of a gap in the surface state dispersion along the non-high symmetry direction is reported. This is proposed to originated from the interaction between the surface state and the VB, leading to the formation of surface resonances.

The design and characterization of a HHG source conceived for Time and Angle Resolved PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) experiments are presented. The harmonics are selected through a grating monochromator with an innovative design able to provide XUV radiation for two distinct TR-ARPES setups. © OSA 2018.

Multiorbital correlated materials are often on the verge of multiple electronic phases (metallic, insulating, superconducting, charge and orbitally ordered), which can be explored and controlled by small changes of the external parameters. The use of ultrashort light pulses as a mean to transiently modify the band population is leading to fundamentally new results. In this paper we will review recent advances in the field and we will discuss the possibility of manipulating the orbital polarization in correlated multi-band solid state systems. This technique can provide new understanding of the ground state properties of many interesting classes of quantum materials and offers a new tool to induce transient emergent properties with no counterpart at equilibrium. We will address: the discovery of high-energy Mottness in superconducting copper oxides and its impact on our understanding of the cuprate phase diagram; the instability of the Mott insulating phase in photoexcited vanadium oxides; the manipulation of orbital-selective correlations in iron-based superconductors; the pumping of local electronic excitons and the consequent transient effective quasiparticle cooling in alkali-doped fullerides. In this report we illustrate the instrumental developments involving the branchline of the ALOISA beamline at the Elettra synchrotron, with the setup of the ANCHOR-SUNDYN endstation. The ANCHOR experimental chamber is designed for the study of in-situ prepared organo-metallic hybrid interfaces, by means of synchrotron based soft x-ray spectroscopic techniques. SUNDYN is a femtosecond pulse width laser setup, optimized for the optical pump of organic systems. It has been integrated in the ANCHOR endstation in order to perform time resolved spectroscopies at MegaHertz repetition rate. By combining resonant photoemission spectroscopy and pump-probe X-ray spectroscopies in the same chamber, we can study the dynamics of the electronic structure of organo-metallic interfaces from the femtosecond to the nanosecond timescales. We provide here a detailed description of this setup and discuss some case study measurements obtained during the commissioning of the apparatus.

The interaction between phonons and high-energy excitations of electronic origin in cuprates and their role in the superconducting mechanisms is still controversial. Here we use coherent vibrational time-domain spectroscopy together with density functional and dynamical mean-field theory calculations to establish a direct link between the c-axis phonon modes and the in-plane electronic charge excitations in optimally doped YBCO. The non-equilibrium Raman tensor is measured by means of the broadband 'coherent-phonon' response in pump-probe experiments and is qualitatively described by our model using DFT in frozen phonon approximation plus single band DMFT to account for the electronic correlations. The major outcome of our experimental and theoretical study is to establish the link between out-of-plane copper ions displacements and the in-plane electronic correlations, and to estimate at few unit cells the correlation length of the associated phonon mode. The approach introduced here could help revealing the complex interplay between fluctuations of different nature and spatial correlation in several strongly-correlated materials.

Here, we report on a novel narrowband High Harmonic Generation (HHG) light source designed for ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) on solids. Notably, at 16.9 eV photon energy, the harmonics bandwidth equals 19 meV. This result has been obtained by seeding the HHG process with 230 fs pulses at 515 nm. The ultimate energy resolution achieved on a polycrystalline Au sample at 40 K is ∼22 meV at 16.9 eV. These parameters set a new benchmark for narrowband HHG sources and have been obtained by varying the repetition rate up to 200 kHz and, consequently, mitigating the space charge, operating with ≈ 3 × 10 7 electrons/s and ≈ 5 × 10 8 photons/s. Currently, there is a flurry of research interest on materials with an unconventional electronic structure, and we have already seen significant progress in their understanding and engineering towards real-life applications. The interest erupted with the discovery of graphene and topological insulators in the previous decade. The electrons in graphene simulate massless Dirac Fermions with a linearly dispersing Dirac cone in their band structure, while in topological insulators, the electronic bands wind non-trivially in momentum space giving rise to gapless surface states and bulk bandgap. Weyl semimetals in condensed matter systems are the latest addition to this growing family of topological materials. Weyl Fermions are known in the context of high energy physics since almost the beginning of quantum mechanics. They apparently violate charge conservation rules, displaying the ‘chiral anomaly’, with such remarkable properties recently theoretically predicted and experimentally verified to exist as low energy quasiparticle states in certain condensed matter systems. Not only are these new materials extremely important for our fundamental understanding of quantum phenomena, but also they exhibit completely different transport phenomena. For example, massless Fermions are susceptible to scattering from non-magnetic impurities. Dirac semimetals exhibit non-saturating extremely large magnetoresistance as a consequence of their robust electronic bands being protected by time reversal symmetry. These open up whole new possibilities for materials engineering and applications including quantum computing. In this review, we recapitulate some of the outstanding properties of WTe2, namely, its non-saturating titanic magnetoresistance due to perfect electron and hole carrier balance up to a very high magnetic field observed for the very first time. It also indicative of hosting Lorentz violating type-II Weyl Fermions in its bandstructure, again first predicted candidate material to host such a remarkable phase. We primarily focus on the findings of our ARPES, spin-ARPES, and time-resolved ARPES studies complemented by first-principles calculations.

The prediction of Weyl fermions in the low-temperature noncentrosymmetric $1{T}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ phase of ${\mathrm{MoTe}}_{2}$ still awaits clear experimental confirmation. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data and ab initio calculations that reveal a surface state arc dispersing between the valence and the conduction band, as expected for a Weyl semimetal. However, we find that the arc survives in the high-temperature centrosymmetric $1{T}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}$ phase. Therefore, a surface Fermi arc is not an unambiguous fingerprint of a topologically nontrivial phase. We have also investigated the surface state spin texture of the $1{T}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ phase by spin-resolved ARPES, and identified additional topologically trivial spin-split states within the projected band gap at higher binding energies.

The electronic structure of ZrTe5 has been matter of renewed interest aimed at clarifying, along with its topological character, the temperature dependence of the unusual transport properties of this material. Here, we report an extensive high resolution Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ARPES) study unveiling a non-monotonic shift of the bands, when the sample temperature is varied between 16 K and 300 K. Moreover, the present conventional ARPES and circularly dichroic ARPES measurements reveal the presence of two states at the top of the valence band. The strong ARPES dichroic signal detected in proximity of the Fermi energy has been interpreted as the indication of the presence of spin polarized states, in agreement with the predicted strong topological character of this material. published

Scientific reports 6, 38796 (2016). doi:10.1038/srep38796, In the past few years, we have been witnessing an increased interest for studying materials properties under non-equilibrium conditions. Several well established spectroscopies for experiments in the energy domain have been successfully adapted to the time domain with sub-picosecond time resolution. Here we show the realization of high resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) with a stable ultrashort X-ray source such as an externally seeded free electron laser (FEL). We have designed and constructed a RIXS experimental endstation that allowed us to successfully measure the d-d excitations in KCoF3 single crystals at the cobalt M$_{2,3}$-edge at FERMI FEL (Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy). The FEL-RIXS spectra show an excellent agreement with the ones obtained from the same samples at the MERIXS endstation of the MERLIN beamline at the Advanced Light Source storage ring (Berkeley, USA). We established experimental protocols for performing time resolved RIXS experiments at a FEL source to avoid X ray-induced sample damage, while retaining comparable acquisition time to the synchrotron based measurements. Finally, we measured and modelled the influence of the FEL mixed electromagnetic modes, also present in externally seeded FELs, and the beam transport with ~120 meV experimental resolution achieved in the presented RIXS setup., Published by Nature Publishing Group, London

A long-standing question for avant-garde data storage technology concerns the nature of the ultrafast photoinduced phase transformations in the wide class of chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs). Overall, a comprehensive understanding of the microstructural evolution and the relevant kinetics mechanisms accompanying the out-of-equilibrium phases is still missing. Here, after overheating a phase-change chalcogenide superlattice by an ultrafast laser pulse, we indirectly track the lattice relaxation by time resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (tr-XAS) with a sub-ns time resolution. The approach to the tr-XAS experimental results reported in this work provides an atomistic insight of the mechanism that takes place during the cooling process; meanwhile a first-principles model mimicking the microscopic distortions accounts for a straightforward representation of the observed dynamics. Finally, we envisage that our approach can be applied in future studies addressing the role of dynamical structural strain in PCMs.

Unveiling the nature of the bosonic excitations that mediate the formation of Cooper pairs is a key issue for understanding unconventional superconductivity. A fundamen- tal step toward this goal would be to identify the relative weight of the electronic and phononic contributions to the overall frequency (\Omega) dependent bosonic function, \Pi(\Omega). We perform optical spectroscopy on Bi2212 crystals with simultaneous time- and frequency-resolution; this technique allows us to disentangle the electronic and phononic contributions by their different temporal evolution. The strength of the interaction ({\lambda}~1.1) with the electronic excitations and their spectral distribution fully account for the high critical temperature of the superconducting phase transition., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Using time-resolved reflectivity measurements on unaligned and aligned bundled single-wall carbon nanotubes with a pump energy of 1.55 eV, quasi-resonant with the second Van Hoye singularity of semiconducting tubes, a positive sign of the transient reflectivity is detected in unaligned nanotubes. In contrast a negative sign is detected in aligned nanotubes. This discovery addresses a long-standing question showing that in unaligned nanotubes the stronger intertube interactions favor the formation of short-lived free charge carriers in semiconducting tubes. A detailed analysis of the transient reflectivity spectral response shows that the free carriers in the photo-excited state of semiconducting tubes move towards metallic tubes in about 400 fs. Bilayer graphene is a highly promising material for electronic and optoelectronic applications since it is supporting massive Dirac fermions with a tuneable band gap. However, no consistent picture of the gap's effect on the optical and transport behavior has emerged so far, and it has been proposed that the insulating nature of the gap could be compromised by unavoidable structural defects, by topological in-gap states, or that the electronic structure could be altogether changed by many-body effects. Here we directly follow the excited carriers in bilayer graphene on a femtosecond time scale, using ultrafast time- and angle-resolved photoemission. We find a behavior consistent with a single-particle band gap. Compared to monolayer graphene, the existence of this band gap leads to an increased carrier lifetime in the minimum of the lowest conduction band. The non-equilibrium approach to correlated electron systems is often based on the paradigm that different degrees of freedom interact on different timescales. In this context, photo-excitation is treated as an impulsive injection of electronic energy that is transferred to other degrees of freedom only at later times. Here, by studying the ultrafast dynamics of quasi-particles in an archetypal strongly correlated charge-transfer insulator (La2CuO4+delta), we show that the interaction between electrons and bosons manifests itself directly in the photo-excitation processes of a correlated material. With the aid of a general theoretical framework (Hubbard-Holstein Hamiltonian), we reveal that sub-gap excitation pilots the formation of itinerant quasi-particles, which are suddenly dressed by an ultrafast reaction of the bosonic field.

The complex electronic properties of ${\mathrm{ZrTe}}_{5}$ have recently stimulated in-depth investigations that assigned this material to either a topological insulator or a 3D Dirac semimetal phase. Here we report a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of both electronic and structural properties of ${\mathrm{ZrTe}}_{5}$, revealing that the bulk material is a strong topological insulator (STI). By means of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we identify at the top of the valence band both a surface and a bulk state. The dispersion of these bands is well captured by ab initio calculations for the STI case, for the specific interlayer distance measured in our x-ray diffraction study. Furthermore, these findings are supported by scanning tunneling spectroscopy revealing the metallic character of the sample surface, thus confirming the strong topological nature of ${\mathrm{ZrTe}}_{5}$.

International audience; SmB6 is a mixed valence Kondo system resulting from the hybridization between localized f electrons and delocalized d electrons. We have investigated its out-of-equilibrium electron dynamics by means of time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The transient electronic population above the Fermi level can be described by a time-dependent Fermi-Dirac distribution. By solving a two-temperature model that well reproduces the relaxation dynamics of the effective electronic temperature, we estimate the electron-phonon coupling constant lambda to range from 0.13 +/- 0.03 to 0.04 +/- 0.01. These extremes are obtained assuming a coupling of the electrons with either a phonon mode at 10 or 19 meV. A realistic value of the average phonon energy will give an actual value of lambda within this range. Our results provide an experimental report on the material electron-phonon coupling, contributing to both the electronic transport and the macroscopic thermodynamic properties of SmB6.

The quest for investigating the non-equilibrium dynamics of the band structure of strongly-correlated materials over their entire Brillouin zone is a primary objective. However, the actual ultrafast UV light sources are not suitable for addressing several critical questions in the field. Here we report on a novel light source generating sub-250 fs, 9.3 eV photon energy light pulses at 250 kHz repetition rate, obtained via third-harmonic generation in Xe of frequency-doubled 50 fs laser pulses at 1.55 eV. By reporting the measured band dispersion of a Cu(111) crystal and the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Bi2Se3 topological insulator, we prove that this source is suitable for studying the non-equilibrium dynamics of the entire Fermi surface of several complex materials, with high signal statistics and limited space-charge effect. We investigate the evolution of both the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure in representative compounds of the infinitely adaptive superlattice series (Sb2)m−Sb2Te3 (m=0–3) by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and time-delayed two-photon photoemission, combined with first-principles band-structure calculations. We discover that the topological nature of the surface states and their spin texture are robust, with dispersions evolving from linear (Dirac-like) to parabolic (Rashba-like) along the series, as the materials evolve from semiconductors to semimetals. Our findings provide a promising strategy for engineering the topological states with the desired flexibility needed for realizing different quantum phenomena and spintronics applications.

The prospect of optically inducing and controlling a spin-polarized current in spintronic devices has generated wide interest in the out-of-equilibrium electronic and spin structure of topological insulators. In this Letter we show that only measuring the spin intensity signal over several orders of magnitude by spin-, time-, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy can provide a comprehensive description of the optically excited electronic states in Bi2Se3. Our experiments reveal the existence of a surface resonance state in the second bulk band gap that is benchmarked by fully relativistic ab initio spin- resolved photoemission calculations. We propose that the newly reported state plays a major role in the ultrafast dynamics of the system, acting as a bottleneck for the interaction between the topologically protected surface state and the bulk conduction band. In fact, the spin- polarization dynamics in momentum space show that these states display macroscopically different temperatures and, more importantly, different cooling rates over several picoseconds.

The ultrafast dynamics of excited carriers in graphene is closely linked to the Dirac spectrum and playsa central role for many electronic and optoelectronic applications. Harvesting energy from excitedelectron-hole pairs, for instance, is only possible if these pairs can be separated before they lose energyto vibrations, merely heating the lattice. Until now, the hot carrier dynamics in graphene could only beaccessed indirectly. Here, we present a dynamical view on the Dirac cone by time- and angle-resolvedphotoemission spectroscopy. This allows us to show the quasi-instant thermalization of the electron gas toa temperature of 2000 K, to determine the time-resolved carrier density, and to disentangle the subsequentdecay into excitations of optical phonons and acoustic phonons (directly and via supercollisions).

Time- and angle-resolved photoemission measurements on two doped graphene samples displaying different doping levels reveal remarkable differences in the ultrafast dynamics of the hot carriers in the Dirac cone. In the more strongly ($n$-)doped graphene, we observe larger carrier multiplication factors ($>$ 3) and a significantly faster phonon-mediated cooling of the carriers back to equilibrium compared to in the less ($p$-)doped graphene. These results suggest that a careful tuning of the doping level allows for an effective manipulation of graphene's dynamical response to a photoexcitation., 17 pages, 3 figures

A major challenge in understanding the cuprate superconductors is to clarify the nature of the fundamental electronic correlations that lead to the pseudogap phenomenon. Here we use ultrashort light pulses to prepare a non-thermal distribution of excitations and capture novel properties that are hidden at equilibrium. Using a broadband (0.5-2 eV) probe we are able to track the dynamics of the dielectric function, unveiling an anomalous decrease of the scattering rate of the charge carriers in a pseudogap-like region of the temperature ($T$) and hole-doping ($p$) phase diagram. In this region, delimited by a well-defined $T^*_{neq}(p)$ line, the photo-excitation process triggers the evolution of antinodal excitations from gapped (localized) to delocalized quasi-particles characterized by a longer lifetime. The novel concept of photo-enhanced antinodal conductivity is naturally explained within the single-band Hubbard model, in which the short-range Coulomb repulsion leads to a k-space differentiation between "nodal" quasiparticles and antinodal excitations., accepted for publication on Nature Communications

Bulk Rashba systems BiTeX (X = I, Br, Cl) are emerging as important candidates for developing spintronics devices because of the coexistence of spin-split bulk and surface states, along with the ambipolar character of the surface charge carriers. The need to study the spin texture of strongly spin-orbit-coupled materials has recently promoted circular dichroic angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (CD-ARPES) as an indirect tool to measure the spin and the angular degrees of freedom. Here we report a detailed photon-energy-dependent study of the CD-ARPES spectra in BiTeX (X = I, Br, Cl). Our work reveals a large variation in the magnitude and sign of the dichroism. Interestingly, we find that the dichroic signal modulates differently for the three compounds and for the different spin-split states. These findings show a momentum and photon-energy dependence for the CD-ARPES signals in the bulk Rashba semiconductor BiTeX (X = I, Br, Cl). Finally, the outcome of our experiment indicates the important relation between the modulation of the dichroism and the phase differences between the wave functions involved in the photoemission process. This phase difference can be due to initial- or final-state effects. In the former case the phase difference results in possible interference effects among the photoelectrons emitted from different atomic layers and characterized by entangled spin-orbital polarized bands. In the latter case the phase difference results from the relative phases of the expansion of the final state in different outgoing partial waves.

The nature of the Dirac quasiparticles in topological insulators calls for a direct investigation of the electron-phonon scattering at the surface. By comparing time-resolved ARPES measurements of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 with different probing depths, we show that the relaxation dynamics of the electronic temperature of the conduction band is much slower at the surface than in the bulk. This observation suggests that surface phonons are less effective in cooling the electron gas in the conduction band.

Ultrafast broadband transient reflectivity experiments are performed to study the interplay between the nonequilibrium dynamics of the pseudogap and the superconducting phases in Bi(2)Sr(2}Ca(0.92)Y(0.08)Cu(2)O(8+δ). Once superconductivity is established, the relaxation of the pseudogap proceeds ~2 times faster than in the normal state, and the corresponding transient reflectivity variation changes sign after ~0.5 ps. The results can be described by a set of coupled differential equations for the pseudogap and for the superconducting order parameter. The sign and strength of the coupling term suggest a remarkably weak competition between the two phases, allowing their coexistence.

In strongly correlated materials the electronic and optical properties are significantly affected by the coupling of fermionic quasiparticles to different degrees of freedom, such as lattice vibrations and bosonic excitations of electronic origin. Broadband ultrafast spectroscopy is emerging as the premier technique to unravel the subtle interplay between quasiparticles and electronic or phononic collective excitations, by their different characteristic timescales and spectral responses. By investigating the femtosecond dynamics of the optical properties of Y-Bi2212 crystals over the 0.5-2 eV energy range, we disentangle the electronic and phononic contributions to the generalized electron-boson Eliashberg function, showing that the spectral distribution of the electronic excitations, such as spin fluctuations and current loops, and the strength of their interaction with quasiparticles can account for the high critical temperature of the superconducting phase transition. Finally, we discuss how the use of this technique can be extended to the underdoped region of the phase diagram of cuprates, in which a pseudogap in the quasiparticle density of states opens. We exploit time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to determine the evolution of the out-of-equilibrium electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. The response of the Fermi-Dirac distribution to ultrashort IR laser pulses has been studied by modeling the dynamics of hot electrons after optical excitation. We disentangle a large increase in the effective temperature (T*) from a shift of the chemical potential (mu*), which is consequence of the ultrafast photodoping of the conduction band. The relaxation dynamics of T* and mu* are k independent and these two quantities uniquely define the evolution of the excited charge population. We observe that the energy dependence of the nonequilibrium charge population is solely determined by the analytical form of the effective Fermi-Dirac distribution.

Revealing the nature of charge excitations in strongly correlated electron systems is crucial to understanding their exotic properties. Here we use broadband ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy in the visible range to study low-energy transitions across the Mott-Hubbard gap in the orbitally ordered insulator YVO${}_{3}$. Separating thermal and nonthermal contributions to the optical transients, we show that the total spectral weight of the two lowest peaks is conserved, demonstrating that both excitations correspond to the same multiplet. The pump-induced transfer of spectral weight between the two peaks reveals that the low-energy one is a Hubbard exciton, i.e., a resonance or a nearly bound state between a doublon and a holon. Finally, we speculate that the pump-driven spin disorder can be used to quantify the kinetic energy gain of the excitons in a ferromagnetic environment.

Here we report extensive ultrafast time-resolved reflectivity experiments on overdoped Bi${}_{2}$Sr${}_{2}$Ca${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$Y${}_{x}$Cu${}_{2}$O${}_{8+\ensuremath{\delta}}$ single crystals ($T$${}_{c}=78$ K) aimed to clarify the nature of the superconducting-to-normal-state photoinduced phase transition. The data show a lack of the quasiparticle decay time divergence at the fluence required to induce this phase transition, in contrast to the thermally driven phase transition observed at $T$${}_{c}$ and at variance with recently reported photoinduced transitions from charge-density and spin-density waves to a metal. Our data demonstrate the nonthermal character of the superconducting-to-normal-state photoinduced phase transition. The data are analyzed using an ad-hoc time-dependent Rothwarf-Taylor model, opening the question of the order of this nonequilibrium phase transition.
