1. Phase-field thermo-electromechanical modelling of lead-free BNT-based piezoelectric materials

Abstract

In recent yerars, Bismuth sodium titanate (BNT) and BNT-based piezoelectric materials have proved potential for lead-free piezoelectric technologies. Such materials' complicated phase structure is crucial to their thermo-electromechanical behaviour. Pure BNT has a rhombohedral (R3c) lattice structure at room temperature. The phase transition to an orthorhombic phase (Pnma) at 200\textcelsius is mainly due to octahedral tilting. This transition is called the depolarization temperature ($T_{d}$). The R3c phase ferroelectric domains have a higher spontaneous polarization, which declines with increasing temperature and reaches a local minimum at $T_{d}$, causing a phase change. Additionally, BNT transitions from Pnma to P4bm at 320\textcelsius and from P4bm to Pm3m at 520\textcelsius. These transitions also result in the changes in the spontaneous polarization. Therefore, the investigation of domain switching and phase change dynamics in relation to temperature and electromechanical coupling has acquired considerable importance. The complex phase regimes and their activation under different temperature settings will be examined to improve the use of these materials in sensors, actuators, energy harvesting devices, and haptic technologies. The micro-sized BNT inclusions are implanted in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to reperesent the practical scenario. A two-dimensional phase-field thermo-electromechanical computational model has been created to investigate the complex phase transition and domain switching behaviour of BNT-PDMS composite under varying temperature conditions. The model uses Landau-Ginzburg and thermo-electromechanical free energy to accurately simulate phase shift and domain switching. Data from pure BNT experiments validated the model. Abstract

This study presents a computational framework to investigate and predict the complicated multiphase properties of eco-friendly lead-free piezoelectric materials, which are crucial for sustainable technological progress. Although their electromechanical properties vary by phase, lead-free piezoelectric materials show a considerable thermo-electromechanical response. Lead-free materials such as Bi$_{0.5}$Na$_{0,5}$TiO$_{3}$ (BNT) and other BNT-type piezoelectric materials transition to rhombohedral (R3c), orthorhombic (Pnma), tetragonal (P4bm), and cubic (Cc) phases with temperature variation. These phases are determined by the symmetry and alignment of the ferroelectric domains. Multiple phases can occur simultaneously under specific thermal, electrical, and mechanical conditions, leading in complex multiphase behaviour. These materials' performance must be assessed by studying such behaviour. This study uses Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory to simulate material micro-domain phase transitions. The computational model for BNT-type piezoelectric material covers temperature-induced ferroelectric domain switching and phase transitions. Therefore, the developed computational approach will assist us in better understanding the influence of these materials' complex multiphase behaviour on creating sustainable solutions with green technologies.

Abstract

In recent times, there have been notable advancements in haptic technology, particularly in screens found on mobile phones, laptops, LED screens, and control panels. However, it is essential to note that the progress in high-temperature haptic applications is still in the developmental phase. Due to its complex phase and domain structures, lead-free piezoelectric materials such as BNT-based haptic technology behave differently at high temperatures than ambient conditions. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the aspects of thermal management and thermal stability, as temperature plays a vital role in the phase and domain transition of BNT material. A two-dimensional thermo-electromechanical model has been proposed in this study to analyze the thermal stability of BNT material by analyzing the impact of temperature on effective electromechanical properties and mechanical and electric field parameters. However, the thermo-electromechanical modelling of BNT ceramics examines the macroscopic effects of the applied thermal field on mechanical and electric field parameters as phase change and microdomain dynamics are not considered in this model. This study analyzes the impact of thermo-electromechanical coupling on the performance of BNT-type piezoelectric materials compared to conventional electromechanical coupling. The results predicted a significant improvement in piezoelectric response compared to electromechanical coupling due to increased thermoelectric effect in absence of phase change and microdomain switching for temperature boundary conditions below depolarization temperature ($T_{d}$~200$^{\circ}$C for pure BNT material)., Comment: 37 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Abstract The NLRP3 inflammasome is an intracellular, multiprotein complex that promotes the auto-catalytic activation of caspase-1 and the subsequent maturation and secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-1β and IL-18. Persistent activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome has been implicated in the pathophysiology of a number of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, including neuroinflammation, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, lupus nephritis and severe asthma. Here we describe the preclinical profile of JT002, a novel small molecule inhibitor of the NLRP3 inflammasome. JT002 potently reduced NLRP3-dependent proinflammatory cytokine production across a number of cellular assays and prevented pyroptosis, an inflammatory form of cell death triggered by active caspase-1. JT002 demonstrated in vivo target engagement at therapeutically relevant concentrations when orally dosed in mice and prevented body weight loss and improved inflammatory and fibrotic endpoints in a model of Muckle–Wells syndrome (MWS). In two distinct models of neutrophilic airway inflammation, JT002 treatment significantly reduced airway hyperresponsiveness and airway neutrophilia. These results provide a rationale for the therapeutic targeting of the NLRP3 inflammasome in severe asthma and point to the use of JT002 in a variety of inflammatory disorders.

Abstract

Abstract Genomic and transcriptomic data have been generated across a wide range of prostate cancer (PCa) study cohorts. These data can be used to better characterize the molecular features associated with clinical outcomes and to test hypotheses across multiple, independent patient cohorts. In addition, derived features, such as estimates of cell composition, risk scores, and androgen receptor (AR) scores, can be used to develop novel hypotheses leveraging existing multi-omic datasets. The full potential of such data is yet to be realized as independent datasets exist in different repositories, have been processed using different pipelines, and derived and clinical features are often not provided or not standardized. Here, we present the curatedPCaData R package, a harmonized data resource representing >2900 primary tumor, >200 normal tissue, and >500 metastatic PCa samples across 19 datasets processed using standardized pipelines with updated gene annotations. We show that meta-analysis across harmonized studies has great potential for robust and clinically meaningful insights. curatedPCaData is an open and accessible community resource with code made available for reproducibility.

Abstract

Ceres is the largest body in the Main Belt, and it is characterized by a large abundance of water ice in its interior. This feature is suggested by its relatively low bulk density (2162 kg m$^{-3}$), while its partial differentiation into a rocky core and icy crust is suggested by several geological and geochemical features: minerals and salts produced by aqueous alteration, icy patches on the surface, lobate morphology interpreted as surface flows. In this work we explore how the composition can influence the characteristics of thermal convection in the crust of Ceres. Our results suggest that the onset of thermal convection is difficult and when it occurs it is short lived and this could imply that Ceres preserved deep liquid until present, as recent suggested by the work of Castillo-Rogez et al.. Moreover, cryovolcanism could be driven by diapirism (chemical convection) rather than thermal convection.

Abstract

Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis, respectively the causative agents of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) and bovine paratuberculosis (PTB), share a high number of antigenic proteins. This characteristics makes the differential diagnosis of the diseases difficult. The interferon gamma (IFN-γ), C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10), matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), interleukin 22 (IL-22) and thrombospondin 1 (THBS1) bovine genes have already been shown to be accurate transcriptional biomarkers of bTB. In order to improve the diagnosis of bTB and PTB, in the present study we evaluated the risk of false positivity of these bTB biomarkers in cattle with PTB.

Abstract

Abstract Habitat fragmentation impacts the distribution of genetic diversity and population genetic structure. Therefore, protecting the evolutionary potential of species, especially in the context of the current rate of human‐induced environmental change, is an important goal. In riverine ecosystems, migration barriers affect the genetic structure of native species, while also influencing the spread of invasive species. In this study, we compare genetic patterns of two native and one highly invasive riverine fish species in a Belgian river basin, namely the native three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and stone loach (Barbatula barbatula), and the non‐native and invasive topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva). We aimed to characterize both natural and anthropogenic determinants of genetic diversity and population genetic connectivity. Genetic diversity was highest in topmouth gudgeon, followed by stone loach and three‐spined stickleback. The correlation between downstream distance and genetic diversity, a pattern often observed in riverine systems, was only marginally significant in stone loach and three‐spined stickleback, while genetic diversity strongly declined with increasing number of barriers in topmouth gudgeon. An Isolation‐By‐Distance pattern characterizes the population genetic structure of each species. Population differentiation was only associated with migration barriers in the invasive topmouth gudgeon, while genetic composition of all species seemed at least partially determined by the presence of migration barriers. Among the six barrier types considered (watermills, sluices, tunnels, weirs, riverbed obstructions, and others), the presence of watermills was the strongest driver of genetic structure and composition. Our results indicate that conservation and restoration actions, focusing on conserving genetic patterns, cannot be generalized across species. Moreover, measures might target either on restoring connectivity, while risking a rapid spread of the invasive topmouth gudgeon, or not restoring connectivity, while risking native species extinction in upstream populations.

26. Numerical renormalization group algorithms for self-similar solutions of partial differential equations

Abstract

We systematically study a numerical procedure that reveals the asymptotically self-similar dynamics of solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs). This procedure, based on the renormalization group (RG) theory for PDEs, appeared initially in a conference proceeding by Braga et al. \cite{BFI04}. This numerical version of RG method, dubbed as the numerical RG (nRG) algorithm, numerically rescales the temporal and spatial variables in each iteration and drives the solutions to a fixed point exponentially fast, which corresponds to the self-similar dynamics of the equations. In this paper, we carefully examine and validate this class of algorithms by comparing the numerical solutions with either the exact or the asymptotic solutions of the model equations in literature. The other contribution of the current paper is that we present several examples to demonstrate that this class of nRG algorithms can be applied to a wide range of PDEs to shed lights on longtime self-similar dynamics of certain physical models that are difficult to analyze, both numerically and analytically.

30. Association between Chromosome 4 and mercury accumulation in muscle of the three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)

Abstract

Abstract Anthropogenic stressors, such as pollutants, act as selective factors that can leave measurable changes in allele frequencies in the genome. Metals are of particular concern among pollutants, because of interference with vital biological pathways. We use the three‐spined stickleback as a model for adaptation to mercury pollution in natural populations. We collected sticklebacks from 21 locations in Flanders (Belgium), measured the accumulated levels of mercury in the skeletal muscle tissue, and genotyped the fish by sequencing (GBS). The spread of muscle mercury content across locations was considerable, ranging from 21.5 to 327 ng/g dry weight (DW). We then conducted a genome‐wide association study (GWAS) between 28,450 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the accumulated levels of mercury, using different approaches. Based on a linear mixed model analysis, the GWAS yielded multiple hits with a single top hit on Chromosome 4, with eight more SNPs suggestive of association. A second approach, a latent factor mixed model analysis, highlighted one single SNP on Chromosome 11. Finally, an outlier test identified one additional SNP on Chromosome 4 that appeared under selection. Out of all ten SNPs we identified as associated with mercury in muscle, three SNPs all located on Chromosome 4 and positioned within a 2.5 kb distance of an annotated gene. Based on these results and the genome coverage of our SNPs, we conclude that the selective effect of mercury pollution in Flanders causes a significant association with at least one locus on Chromosome 4 in three‐spined stickleback.

Abstract

This article discusses how state suppression of human rights activism and restrictions on civil society are likely to impact the implementation of the United Nations’ International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032, hereafter “the Decade”). We focus on China, India, and Indonesia, the three most populous and linguistically diverse countries in Asia. Drawing on a range of reports from human rights organizations and materials from academic literature, we argue that increasing attacks on human rights defenders and restrictions on civil society are likely to pose serious challenges to the implementation of the Decade in these countries. We situate this argument within broader debates about human rights advocacy and state repression, and draw on Guzel Yusupova’s arguments about the politics of fear and minority language mobilization to suggest that intensifying state repression of human rights is likely to prevent new forms of Indigenous language advocacy from emerging during the Decade.

Abstract Uncertainty hampers innovative mixed‐fisheries management by the scales at which connectivity dynamics are relevant to management objectives. The spatial scale of sustainable stock management is species‐specific and depends on ecology, life history and population connectivity. One valuable approach to understand these spatial scales is to determine to what extent population genetic structure correlates with the oceanographic environment. Here, we compare the level of genetic connectivity in three codistributed and commercially exploited demersal flatfish species living in the North East Atlantic Ocean. Population genetic structure was analysed based on 14, 14 and 10 neutral DNA microsatellite markers for turbot, brill and sole, respectively. We then used redundancy analysis (RDA) to attribute the genetic variation to spatial (geographical location), temporal (sampling year) and oceanographic (water column characteristics) components. The genetic structure of turbot was composed of three clusters and correlated with variation in the depth of the pycnocline, in addition to spatial factors. The genetic structure of brill was homogenous, but correlated with average annual stratification and spatial factors. In sole, the genetic structure was composed of three clusters, but was only linked to a temporal factor. We explored whether the management of data poor commercial fisheries, such as in brill and turbot, might benefit from population‐specific information. We conclude that the management of fish stocks has to consider species‐specific genetic structures and may benefit from the documentation of the genetic seascape and life‐history traits.

Abstract

Background: Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mycobacterium bovis that mainly affects cattle. Although vaccination is the most effective strategy to control bTB, it may interfere with the diagnosis of the infection. Therefore, ancillary tests to differentiate vaccinated from infected animals (DIVA) are essential in a cattle vaccination scenario. ESAT-6 and CFP-10 are the most promissory DIVA antigens. Method: In this study, we deleted esat6 and cfp10 genes from the M. bovis Δ mce2 live-attenuated vaccine candidate and evaluated its protection level against bTB in BALBc mice. Results: We found that the M. bovis strain mutant in mce2, esat-6 and cfp-10 failed to confer protection against virulent M. bovis challenge in a mouse model of tuberculosis. Conclusions: This result highlights the relevant role of ESAT-6 and CFP-10 in the induction of protective immune response against M. bovis infection and reveals the need of evaluating different strategies to compensate for the lack of these DIVA antigens in new vaccine formulations.

Abstract

The current study presents for the very first time to our knowledge the synthesis, characterization, and application of regio-selectively modified dendritic silica particles (RMDS) in tire rubber composites. So far, no study has ever reported mesoporous silica bringing greater mechanical properties than small fractal precipitated silica. With mechanical testing (DMA, tensile strength) and advanced imaging (TEM-EDS, HIM-SIMS, micro-CT), it was demonstrated that dendritic particles enable superior mechanical reinforcement of rubber-based nanocomposites without any drawback as usually reported with fractal fillers. On one side, their modified porous surface mimics the porous aggregates formed by classic fillers, enabling the rubber chains to permeate the pores and closely interact with the particles. On the other side, unlike fractal fillers, RMDS consist of single particles instead of aggregates, and therefore do not suffer as much from the Payne effect and irreversible dislocations under mechanical solicitations. Also, the excellent dispersibility of RMDS allows to combine them with small amount of fractal filler. Dual filler composite shows superior mechanical performances versus materials using one filler family, leading to higher reinforcement, better traction and rolling resistance indicators. The use of porous particles as “unbreakable” fillers for rubber with a small amount of fractal silica as additive fillers paves the way for novel reinforcing dual-filler systems to be used in disruptive tires technology.

Abstract

Bacterial infections associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are a major economic burden to hospitals, and confer high rates of morbidity and mortality among those infected. Exploitation of novel therapeutic targets is thus necessary to combat this dangerous pathogen. Here, we report on the identification and characterization, including crystal structures, of two nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors that function as antimicrobials against MRSA. These data provide the first evidence that bacterial NOS (bNOS) inhibitors can work synergistically with oxidative stress to enhance MRSA killing. Crystal structures show that each inhibitor contacts an active site Ile residue in bNOS that is Val in the mammalian NOS isoforms. Mutagenesis studies show that the additional nonpolar contacts provided by the Ile in bNOS contribute to tighter binding toward the bacterial enzyme.

Abstract

Asteroid 21 Lutetia, visited by the Rosetta spacecraft, plays a crucial role in the reconstruction of primordial phases of planetary objects. Its high bulk density and its primitive chondritic crust (Weiss et al. 2011) suggest that Lutetia could be partially differentiated. We developed a numerical code, also used for studying the geophysical history of Vesta (Formisano et al., submitted), to explore several scenarios of internal evolution of Lutetia, differing in the strength of radiogenic sources and in the global post-sintering porosity. The only significant heat source for partial differentiation is represented by Al26, the other possible sources (Fe60, accretion and differentiation) being negligible. In scenarios in which Lutetia completed its accretion in less than 0.7 Ma from injection of Al26 in Solar Nebula and for post-sintering values of macroporosity not exceeding 30 vol. %, the asteroid experienced only partial differentiation. The formation of the proto-core, a structure enriched in metals and also containing pristine silicates, requires from 1 to 4 Ma: the size of the proto-core varies from 6 to 30 km., Comment: 12 pages, 2 tables, 4 figures.
