1. Realizing topological edge states in graphene-like elastic metamaterials

Abstract

The study of topological states in electronic structures, which allows robust transport properties against impurities and defects, has been recently extended to the realm of elasticity. This work shows that nontrivial topological flexural edge states located on the free boundary of the elastic graphene-like metamaterial can be realized without breaking the time reversal, mirror, or inversion symmetry of the system. Numerical calculations and experimental studies demonstrate the robust transport of flexural waves along the boundaries of the designed structure. The topological edge states on the free boundary are not limited by the size of the finite structure, which can reduce the scale of the topological state system. In addition, unlike the edge states localized on the free boundary in graphene where the group velocity is zero, the edge states on the elastic metamaterial plate have propagation states with non-zero group velocity. There is a frequency range for the edge states, and we introduce the concept of Shannon entropy for elastic waves and use it to assess the frequency range of the edge states in graphene-like elastic metamaterials. 3. Spatial Analysis Model for the Evaluation of the Territorial Adequacy of the Urban Process in Coastal Areas

Abstract

Coastal spaces are shaped by human activity. Approaching their urban spaces allows us to analyse the concepts of structure, growth, and management. Highlighting the problems associated with these concepts can lead to intensive scientific analysis and provide solid research methods. This paper focuses on the study of how the process of territorial occupation takes place and the urban forms it generates on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. It is based on the consideration that the process of territorial occupation is deficient in its territorial adequacy. To analyse this, a methodology is proposed that addresses processes of analysis at different scales: dynamics of changes in land use, the study of the morphologies of urban development with spatial analysis tools, and the adaptation of urban processes to the characteristics of the spaces that support them with multi-criteria evaluation techniques and GIS (Geographical Information Systems). The results are specified in five degrees of suitability of the occupation of the territory. Two conclusions can be observed: first, urban planning gives rise to forms of occupation that follow a similar pattern in the twenty areas studied, and second, the suitability of the urban process is not governed by planning based on precepts of suitability and environmental logic but by a weakness of the adapted planning methods.

Abstract Late‐onset migration of pacing leads in the left hemithorax is a rare but potentially life‐threatening complication. Radiological examinations are required to detect any involvement of either left ventricle or lung parenchyma, prompting immediate surgical extraction in this setting. Identification of high‐risk patients is mandatory to prevent this complex iatrogenic complication.

Abstract

BackgroundMaternal hypercholesterolemia during pregnancy is associated with markedly enhanced fatty streak formation in human fetal aortas and accelerated progression of atherosclerosis in normocholesterolemic children.Methods and resultsTo establish the causal role of maternal hypercholesterolemia in a genetically homogeneous murine model and to test the hypothesis that pathogenic events during fetal development result in persistent changes in arterial gene expression, female LDL receptor-deficient (LDLR(-/-)) mice were fed regular chow or high-fat diets supplemented with 0.075% or 1.25% cholesterol during pregnancy. Lesion sizes were determined in the aortic origin of their chow-fed offspring at 3 months. Maternal hypercholesterolemia more than doubled lesion sizes in male offspring (P1.7-fold. Quantitative PCR for one of these genes using RNA from individual mice yielded similar results. Comparative immunostaining for several of the above genes also indicated increased protein content in offspring of hypercholesterolemic mothers.ConclusionsThese findings establish an atherogenic effect of maternal hypercholesterolemia in genetically uniform mice and indicate that changes in aortic gene expression persist long after fetal exposure to hypercholesterolemia. In addition to elucidating pathogenic mechanisms initiated during fetal development, this approach may identify genes in morphologically normal arteries that influence the susceptibility to classical risk factors of atherosclerosis.

Abstract

This paper presents a palynological study of the archeological layers from the Neanderthal site Abrigo 3 del Complejo del Humo, in southern Spain (Málaga), with the aim of reconstructing the environmental conditions in the vicinity of this hominin site. The Upper Pleistocene vegetation and its variability are described, revealing a high diversity of thermophilous plant taxa throughout the cold dry phases, together with a long-term persistence of woody taxa, including Mediterranean, mesophytes, xerothermics and conifers. With the pollen records of Maytenus senegalensis as an outstanding finding, this study demonstrates the co-existence of temperate, Mediterranean and Ibero-Maghrebian angiosperms on the southern coastal plains of the Iberian Pleistocene where Neanderthals survived for a long time. It is therefore clear that Neanderthals and early Upper Paleolithic modern humans lived in a litoral refugium, which was a propitious environment for maintaining a high biodiversity, including potentially edible plant species. Besides, this coastal refugium offers broad possibilities for hunting, and interpopulational relationships through coastal platforms.

13. A Triad of Filipino Adolescents' Zones of Lived Experiences of Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

Abstract

Considering that today's students feel extremely more comfortable with computers than did earlier generations of students vis-a-vis the notion that, as a social category, they have become one of the most interesting topics in research papers and journals in the field of behavioral and social sciences since the 1950s (Batan 2002), their individual and collective experiences of information and communications technology (ICT) could be expected to create a portrait of accounts that might inform educational policy makers as to how their ICT needs and concerns could be better addressed through a more responsive and a well-defined IT-driven educational platform. The central question that this phenomenological study purported to answer was: "How does a select group of Filipino adolescents collectively experience information and communications technology (ICT)?" Findings of this study revealed that the individual and collective articulations, verbalizations, and musings of the 60 adolescents recruited from two regions in the Philippines exposed three distinct but interrelated conceptual zones of ICT, namely: the zone of technology perspective (ZTP), zone of technology power and efficacy (ZTPE), and zone of technology deficits (ZTD). Implications of the study are also discussed in the paper.

Abstract

Background: The relationship between socioeconomic position (SEP) and adolescent physical activity is uncertain, as most evidence is limited to specific settings and a restricted number of SEP indicators. This study aimed to assess the magnitude of socioeconomic differences in adolescent vigorous physical activity (VPA) across various European countries using a wide range of SEP indicators, including family-based (education, family affluence, perceived social standing, parents’ employment, housing tenure) and adolescent-based (academic performance and pocket money) ones. Methods: We used data from a survey among 10,510 students aged 14–17 from 50 schools in six European cities: Namur (BE), Tampere (FI), Hannover (DE), Latina (IT), Amersfoort (NL), Coimbra (PT). The questionnaire included socio-demographic characteristics and the amount of time spent in VPA. Results: The mean time spent practicing VPA was 60.4 min per day, with lower values for Namur (BE) and Latina (IT), and higher values for Amersfoort (NL). In the multivariable analysis, both categories of SEP indicators (family-based and adolescent based indicators) were independently associated with VPA. For each SEP indicator, lower levels of VPA were recorded in lower socioeconomic groups. In the total sample, each additional category of low SEP was associated with a decrease in mean VPA of about 4 min per day. Conclusions: This study showed that across European cities adolescent VPA is positively related to both family-based SEP and adolescents’ own SEP. 22. Evaluation of antibacterial and antioxidant properties of red (cv Negramaro) and white (cv Fiano) grape pomace extracts

Abstract

Grape pomace has attracted the attention of industry, due to its high content in bioactive compounds, and its healthy activities (1-3). In this work, whole and skin pomace from fermented (red) and un-fermented (white) grape by-products were characterized for antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Antioxidant activity was higher in whole than in skin pomace extracts. The characterization of phenolic composition confirmed the peculiarity of some compounds such as anthocyanins (107.84 ± 10.3 mg/g Total Phenols, TP) in red skin pomace and flavanols (80.73 ±4.04 mg/g TP) in white skin pomace. Fiano and Negroamaro whole and skin pomace extracts were assayed against three pathogenic bacteria. The growth of Staphylococcus aureus DSM 799 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 47077 was inhibited by these extracts up to 250 ?g gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/mL whereas Pseudomonas aeruginosa DSM 939 was found to be resistant. The skin pomace extract of cv Fiano showed the lowest Minimum Inhibitory Concentration at 31.25 GAE/mL against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 47077. Results suggest that differences in antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of different extracts could be ascribed to different phenolic profile (4). Given these results, both red and white pomace extracts could be exploited for future application in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.

Abstract

Background Neurosurgical management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is challenging, with only low-quality evidence. We aimed to explore differences in neurosurgical strategies for TBI across Europe. Methods A survey was sent to 68 centers participating in the Collaborative European Neurotrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI) study. The questionnaire contained 21 questions, including the decision when to operate (or not) on traumatic acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) and intracerebral hematoma (ICH), and when to perform a decompressive craniectomy (DC) in raised intracranial pressure (ICP). Results The survey was completed by 68 centers (100%). On average, 10 neurosurgeons work in each trauma center. In all centers, a neurosurgeon was available within 30 min. Forty percent of responders reported a thickness or volume threshold for evacuation of an ASDH. Most responders (78%) decide on a primary DC in evacuating an ASDH during the operation, when swelling is present. For ICH, 3% would perform an evacuation directly to prevent secondary deterioration and 66% only in case of clinical deterioration. Most respondents (91%) reported to consider a DC for refractory high ICP. The reported cut-off ICP for DC in refractory high ICP, however, differed: 60% uses 25 mmHg, 18% 30 mmHg, and 17% 20 mmHg. Treatment strategies varied substantially between regions, specifically for the threshold for ASDH surgery and DC for refractory raised ICP. Also within center variation was present: 31% reported variation within the hospital for inserting an ICP monitor and 43% for evacuating mass lesions. Conclusion Despite a homogeneous organization, considerable practice variation exists of neurosurgical strategies for TBI in Europe. The magnitude of nicotine dependence among adolescents in the European Union (EU) has not been established. We aimed to estimate the number of nicotine dependent 15-year-old adolescents in the EU, and identify high-risk groups. Methods: The number of nicotine dependent 15-year-olds in the EU was derived combining: (i) total number of 15-year-olds in the EU (2013 Eurostat), (ii) smoking prevalence among 15-year-olds (2013/2014 HBSC survey) and (iii) proportion of nicotine dependent 15-year-olds in six EU countries (2013 SILNE survey). Logistic regression analyses identified high-risk groups in the SILNE dataset. Results: We estimated 172 636 15-year-olds were moderately to highly nicotine dependent (3.2% of all 15 years old; 35.3% of daily smokers). In the total population, risk of nicotine dependence was higher in males, adolescents with poor academic achievement, and those with smoking parents or friends. Among daily smokers, only lower academic achievement and younger age of smoking onset were associated with nicotine dependence. Conclusion: According to our conservative estimates, more than 172 000 15-year-old EU adolescents were nicotine dependent in 2013. Prevention of smoking initiation, especially among adolescents with poor academic performance, is necessary to prevent a similar number of adolescents getting addicted to nicotine each consecutive year. publishersversion published

Abstract

Bordetella bronchiseptica es una bacteria Gram negativa capaz de generar infecciones en el tracto respiratorio de numerosos animales e inclusive de pacientes humanos inmunocomprometidos. Este patógeno cuenta con un sistema de dos componentes BvgAS que regula la transición entre sus fases virulenta y avirulenta. Durante la fase virulenta, B. bronchisepticaexpresa factores de virulencia necesarios para el proceso de infección y reprime la expresión de factores de avirulencia. Los factores de avirulencia se expresan en la fase avirulenta de la bacteria. Otro sistema de regulación presente en B. bronchiseptica, y común en otras bacterias Gram negativas, es el mediado por el segundo mensajero c-di-GMP. Su concentración depende de la actividad de enzimas que lo sintetizan (diguanilato ciclasas con dominio GGDEF) o que lo degradan (fosfodiesterasas con dominios EAL o HD-GYP). Nuestro laboratorio ha demostrado que en B. bronchiseptica altos niveles de c-di-GMP promueven el fenotipo de formación de biofilm mientras reprimen el de movilidad. Recientes resultados del grupo sugerirían que existe una relación más compleja de lo inicialmente pensado entre los sistemas de regulación BvgAS y el mediado por c-di-GMP. En este sentido, hemos observado mediante ensayos transcriptómicos que BvgR, una proteína descripta como parte del sistema BvgAS cuya función es reprimir la expresión de proteínas durante la fase virulenta de B. bronchiseptica, regula numerosas proteínas asociadas al metabolismo de c-di-GMP. De las ocho proteínas con dominio EAL codificadas en el genoma de B. bronchiseptica, BvgR reprime la expresión de solo una de ellas: PdeB. El gen pdeB codificaría para una fosfodiesterasa que no ha sido descripta anteriormente. Con el objetivo de estudiar el rol de PdeB ensayamos dos de los principales fenotipos de B. bronchiseptica: movilidad en agar blando y formación de biofilm en pocillos de PVC. Para ello, se construyó una cepa de B. bronchiseptica que sobreexpresa PdeB desde un plásmido bajo el control de un promotor fuerte y una cepa B. bronchiseptica mutante en pdeB (∆PdeB). Cuando se ensayó la movilidad en agar blando, se observó que la sobreexpresión de PdeB aumenta la movilidad, mientras que el mutante ∆PdeB presentó una leve pero significativamente menor movilidad que la cepa silvestre y al complementarse, el fenotipo fue restaurado. Cuando se ensayó la capacidad de formar biofilm de la cepa ∆PdeB, se observó una significativamente menor cantidad de biofilm formado por la mutante que por la cepa silvestre. Este resultado indicaría que PdeB podría estar involucrada en alguno de los procesos importantes para la formación de biofilm. Estos ensayos se realizaron en condiciones en donde BvgR está activa, lo que resulta interesante dado que indicaría que, aunque BvgR reprima su expresión, PdeB mantiene cierto nivel de expresión basal en dicha condición., Universidad Nacional de La Plata

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is challenging, with only low-quality evidence. We aimed to explore differences in neurosurgical strategies for TBI across Europe. METHODS: A survey was sent to 68 centers participating in the Collaborative European Neurotrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI) study. The questionnaire contained 21 questions, including the decision when to operate (or not) on traumatic acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) and intracerebral hematoma (ICH), and when to perform a decompressive craniectomy (DC) in raised intracranial pressure (ICP). RESULTS: The survey was completed by 68 centers (100%). On average, 10 neurosurgeons work in each trauma center. In all centers, a neurosurgeon was available within 30 min. Forty percent of responders reported a thickness or volume threshold for evacuation of an ASDH. Most responders (78%) decide on a primary DC in evacuating an ASDH during the operation, when swelling is present. For ICH, 3% would perform an evacuation directly to prevent secondary deterioration and 66% only in case of clinical deterioration. Most respondents (91%) reported to consider a DC for refractory high ICP. The reported cut-off ICP for DC in refractory high ICP, however, differed: 60% uses 25 mmHg, 18% 30 mmHg, and 17% 20 mmHg. Treatment strategies varied substantially between regions, specifically for the threshold for ASDH surgery and DC for refractory raised ICP. Also within center variation was present: 31% reported variation within the hospital for inserting an ICP monitor and 43% for evacuating mass lesions. CONCLUSION: Despite a homogeneous organization, considerable practice variation exists of neurosurgical strategies for TBI in Europe. These results provide an incentive for comparative effectiveness research to determine elements of effective neurosurgical care.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Nicotine dependence during adolescence increases the risk of continuing smoking into adulthood. The magnitude of nicotine dependence among adolescents in the European Union (EU) has not been established. We aimed to estimate the number of nicotine dependent 15-year-old adolescents in the EU, and identify high-risk groups. METHODS: The number of nicotine dependent 15-year-olds in the EU was derived combining: (i) total number of 15-year-olds in the EU (2013 Eurostat), (ii) smoking prevalence among 15-year-olds (2013/2014 HBSC survey) and (iii) proportion of nicotine dependent 15-year-olds in six EU countries (2013 SILNE survey). Logistic regression analyses identified high-risk groups in the SILNE dataset. RESULTS: We estimated 172 636 15-year-olds were moderately to highly nicotine dependent (3.2% of all 15 years old; 35.3% of daily smokers). In the total population, risk of nicotine dependence was higher in males, adolescents with poor academic achievement, and those with smoking parents or friends. Among daily smokers, only lower academic achievement and younger age of smoking onset were associated with nicotine dependence. CONCLUSION: According to our conservative estimates, more than 172 000 15-year-old EU adolescents were nicotine dependent in 2013. Prevention of smoking initiation, especially among adolescents with poor academic performance, is necessary to prevent a similar number of adolescents getting addicted to nicotine each consecutive year.

Abstract

The growing number of elderly people with functional limitations, cognitive impairment, and disability is an organizational challenge for the health care sector. This study investigated the factors associated with hospitalization in the period between evaluation and the start of a long-term care (LTC) program for patients on the waiting list. A population-based historical cohort study was performed using data extracted from different administrative databases. The cohort included disabled individuals 65 years and older who were evaluated for entrance into an LTC program between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2013, in Tuscany, Italy. The sample consisted of 11,429 subjects. The characteristics positively associated with hospital admission were residence zone {urban incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 0.83 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.74-0.94)}, number of prescribed drugs IRR = 1.01 (95% CI 1.00-1.02), a Charlson Comorbidity Index of 2 IRR = 1.44 (95% CI 1.26-1.64), and lower social conditions IRR = 0.99 (95% CI 0.98-1.00). The rate of hospitalization for patients with heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia was higher than for patients without these diseases. Our results indicate that it may be possible to predict factors that can lead to hospitalization before the start of an LTC program.
