By using the ultra-deep \textit{JWST}/MIRI image at 5.6 $\mu m$ in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field, we constrain the role of strong H$\alpha$-emitters (HAEs) during Cosmic Reionization at $z\simeq7-8$. Our sample of HAEs is comprised of young ($<35\;\rm Myr$) galaxies, except for one single galaxy ($\approx 300\;\rm Myr$), with low stellar masses ($\lesssim 10^{9}\;\rm M_{\odot}$). These HAEs show a wide range of UV-$\beta$ slopes, with a median value of $\beta = -2.15\pm0.21$ which broadly correlates with stellar mass. We estimate the ionizing photon production efficiency ($\xi_{ion,0}$) of these sources (assuming $f_{esc,LyC} = 0\%$), which yields a median value $\rm log_{10}(\xi_{ion,0}/(Hz\;erg^{-1})) = 25.50^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$. We show that $\xi_{ion,0}$ positively correlates with EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) and specific star formation rate (sSFR). Instead $\xi_{ion,0}$ weakly anti-correlates with stellar mass and $\beta$. Based on the $\beta$ values, we predict $f_{esc, LyC}=4\%^{+3}_{-2}$, which results in $\rm log_{10}(\xi_{ion}/(Hz\;erg^{-1})) = 25.55^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$. Considering this and related findings from the literature, we find a mild evolution of $\xi_{ion}$with redshift. Additionally, our results suggest that these HAEs require only modest escape fractions ($f_{esc, rel}$) of 6$-$15\% to reionize their surrounding intergalactic medium. By only considering the contribution of these HAEs, we estimated their total ionizing emissivity ($\dot{N}_{ion}$) as $\dot{N}_{ion} = 10^{50.53 \pm 0.45}; \text{s}^{-1}\text{Mpc}^{-3}$. When comparing their $\dot{N}_{ion}$ with "non-H$\alpha$ emitter" galaxies across the same redshift range, we find that that strong, young, and low-mass emitters may have played an important role during Cosmic Reionization., Comment: 21 pages, 11 Figures, 1 table. We make use of \textit{JWST} medium and broad-band NIRCam imaging, along with ultra-deep MIRI $5.6 \rm \mu m$ imaging, in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) to identify prominent line emitters at $z\simeq 7-8$. Out of a total of 58 galaxies at $z\simeq 7-8$, we find 18 robust candidates ($\simeq$31\%) for (H$\beta$ + [OIII]) emitters, based on their enhanced fluxes in the F430M and F444W filters, with EW$_{0}$(H$\beta$ +[OIII]) $\simeq 87 - 2100$ {\AA}. Among these emitters, 16 lie in the MIRI coverage area and 12 exhibit a clear flux excess at $5.6 \, \rm \mu m$, indicating the simultaneous presence of a prominent H$\alpha$ emission line with EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) $\simeq 200-3000$ {\AA}. This is the first time that H$\alpha$ emission can be detected in individual galaxies at $z>7$. The H$\alpha$ line, when present, allows us to separate the contributions of H$\beta$ and [OIII] to the (H$\beta$ +[OIII]) complex, and derive H$\alpha$-based star formation rates (SFRs). We find that in most cases [OIII]/H$\beta > 1$. Instead, two galaxies have [OIII]/H$\beta < 1$, indicating that the NIRCam flux excess is mainly driven by H$\beta$. This could potentially imply extremely low metallicities. Most prominent line emitters are very young starbursts or galaxies on their way to/from the starburst cloud. They make for a cosmic SFR density $\rm log_{10}(\rho_{SFR_{H\alpha}}) \simeq -2.35$, which is about a quarter of the total value ($\rm log_{10}(\rho_{SFR_{tot}}) \simeq -1.76$) at $z\simeq 7-8$. Using MIRI on-board JWST we present mid-infrared sub-arcsec imaging (MIRIM) and spectroscopy (MRS) of the hyperluminous infrared system SPT0311-58 at z=6.9. MIRI observations are compared with existing ALMA far-infrared continuum and [CII]158$\mu$m imaging. Even though the ALMA observations suggests very high star formation rates (SFR) in the eastern (E) and western (W) galaxies of the system, the H$\alpha$ line is not detected. This, together with the detection of the Pa$\alpha$ line, implies very high optical nebular extinction with lower limits of 4.2 (E) and 3.9 mag (W), and even larger 5.6 (E) and 10.0 (W) for SED derived values. The extinction-corrected Pa$\alpha$ SFRs are 383 and 230M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ for the E and W galaxies, respectively. This represents 50% of the SFRs derived from the [CII]158$\mu$m line and infrared light for the E galaxy and as low as 6% for the W galaxy. The MIRI observations reveal a clumpy stellar structure, with each clump having 3 to 5 $\times$10$^{9}$M$_\mathrm{\odot}$, leading to a total stellar mass of 2.0 and 1.5$\times$10$^{10}$M$_\mathrm{\odot}$ for the E and W galaxies, respectively. The specific SFR in the stellar clumps ranges from 25 to 59Gyr$^{-1}$, which are 3 to 10 times larger than the values measured in galaxies of similar mass at redshifts 6 to 8. The overall gas mass fraction is $M_\mathrm{gas}$/$M_*\sim3$, similar to that of z=4.5-6 star-forming galaxies. The observed properties of SPT0311-58 such as the clumpy distribution at sub(kpc) scales and the very high average extinction are similar to those observed in low- and intermediate-z LIRGs and ULIRGs, even though SPT0311-58 is observed only 800 Myr after the Big Bang. This paper presents a new search for $z\geq7.5$ galaxies using the COSMOS2020 photometric catalogues. Finding galaxies at the reionization epoch through deep imaging surveys remains observationally challenging. The larger area covered by ground-based surveys like COSMOS enables the discovery of the brightest galaxies at these high redshifts. Covering $1.4$deg$^2$, our COSMOS catalogues were constructed from the latest UltraVISTA data release (DR4) combined with the final Spitzer/IRAC COSMOS images and the Hyper-Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program DR2 release. The [CII] 158$~\mu$m emission line represents so far one of the most profitable tools for the investigation of the high-redshift galaxies in the early Universe. Being one of the brightest cooling lines in the rest-frame far-infrared regime of star-forming galaxies, it has been successfully exploited as a tracer of star-formation rate (SFR) in local sources. The picture is more complex at higher redshifts, where its usability in this context is still under investigation. Recent results from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey suggest that there is no (or weak) evolution of the L$\mathrm{_{[CII]}}$-SFR relation up to $z\sim6$ but their reliability is hampered by the presence of a large population of [CII] non-detected galaxies. In this work, we characterize the population of [CII] non-detections in ALPINE. By stacking their ALMA spectra, we obtain a signal detected at $\sim5.1\sigma$, resulting in a [CII] luminosity of $\mathrm{log(L_\mathrm{[CII]}}/\mathrm{L_{\odot}})$ $\sim7.8$. When combining this value with those from the [CII] detections, we find a $\mathrm{L_{[CII]}}$-SFR relation with a slope $b=1.14\pm0.11$, in agreement within the uncertainties both with the linear relation found in the local Universe, and with the previous findings from ALPINE at $z\sim5$. This suggests that the [CII] line can be considered a good tracer of star formation up to the distant Universe. Finally, we show that the galaxies of our sample that most deviate from the observed L$_\mathrm{[CII]}$-SFR relation could suffer from a less precise redshift estimation, perhaps artificially reducing their [CII] luminosity. We present $10$ main-sequence ALPINE galaxies (log($M/M_{\odot}$) = 9.2-11.1 and ${\rm SFR}=23-190\,{\rm M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}}$) at $z\sim4.5$ with optical [OII] measurements from Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopy and Subaru/MOIRCS narrow-band imaging. This is the largest such multi-wavelength sample at these redshifts, combining various measurements in the ultra-violet, optical, and far-infrared including [CII]$_{158{\rm \mu m}}$ line emission and dust continuum from ALMA and H$\alpha$ emission from Spitzer photometry. For the first time, this unique sample allows us to analyze the relation between [OII] and total star-formation rate (SFR) and the interstellar medium (ISM) properties via [OII]/[CII] and [OII]/\halpha luminosity ratios at $z\sim4.5$. The [OII]$-$SFR relation at $z\sim4.5$ cannot be described using standard local descriptions, but is consistent with a metal-dependent relation assuming metallicities around $50\%$ solar. To explain the measured dust-corrected luminosity ratios of $L[OII]/L[CII] \sim 0.98^{+0.21}_{-0.22}$ and $L[OII]/LHa \sim -0.22^{+0.13}_{-0.15}$ for our sample, ionization parameters $\log(U)< -2$ and electron densities $\log(\rm n_e / {\rm [cm^{-3}]}) \sim 2.5-3$ are required. The former is consistent with galaxies at $z\sim2-3$, however lower than at $z>6$. The latter may be slightly higher than expected given the galaxies' specific SFR. The analysis of this pilot sample suggests that typical log($ M/M_{\odot})$ > 9 galaxies at $z\sim4.5$ to have broadly similar ISM properties as their descendants at $z\sim2$ and suggest a strong evolution of ISM properties since the Epoch of Reionization at $z>6$., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication to MNRAS

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) has become a cornerstone of extragalactic astronomy. Since the last public catalog in 2015, a wealth of new imaging and spectroscopic data has been collected in the COSMOS field. This paper describes the collection, processing, and analysis of this new imaging data to produce a new reference photometric redshift catalog. Source detection and multi-wavelength photometry is performed for 1.7 million sources across the $2\,\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ of the COSMOS field, $\sim$966,000 of which are measured with all available broad-band data using both traditional aperture photometric methods and a new profile-fitting photometric extraction tool, The Farmer, which we have developed. A detailed comparison of the two resulting photometric catalogs is presented. Photometric redshifts are computed for all sources in each catalog utilizing two independent photometric redshift codes. Finally, a comparison is made between the performance of the photometric methodologies and of the redshift codes to demonstrate an exceptional degree of self-consistency in the resulting photometric redshifts. Galaxy mergers are thought to be one of the main mechanisms of the mass assembly of galaxies. Recently, many works have suggested a possible increase in the fraction of major mergers in the early Universe, reviving the debate on which processes (e.g., cold accretion, star formation, mergers) most contribute to the mass build-up of galaxies through cosmic time. To estimate the importance of major mergers in this context, we make use of the new data collected by the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE), which observed the [CII] 158 $\mu$m emission line from a sample of 75 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 4.4 < z < 5.9. We used, for the first time, the morpho-kinematic information provided by the [CII] emission to obtain the fraction of major mergers ($f_{MM}$) at z~5. By adopting different prescriptions for the merger timescales ($T_{MM}$), we converted this fraction into the merger rate per galaxy ($R_{MM}$) and per volume ($\Gamma_{MM}$). We then combined our results with those at lower redshifts from the literature, computing the cosmic evolution of the merger fraction. This is described by a rapid increase from z~0 to higher redshifts, a peak at z~3, and a slow decrease towards earlier epochs. Depending on the timescale prescription used, this fraction translates into a merger rate ranging between ~0.1 and ~4.0 Gyr$^{-1}$ at z~5. Finally, we compare the specific star formation and star-formation rate density with the analogous quantities from major mergers. Our new ALPINE data reveal the presence of a significant merging activity in the early Universe. However, whether this population of mergers can provide a relevant contribution to the galaxy mass assembly at these redshifts and through the cosmic epochs is strongly dependent on the assumption of the merger timescale., Comment: Accepted for publication in section 4. The dust content of normal galaxies and the dust mass density (DMD) at high-z (z>4) are unconstrained given the source confusion and the sensitivity limitations of previous observations. The ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early Times (ALPINE), which targeted 118 UV-selected star-forming galaxies at 4.4

While the kinematics of galaxies up to z~3 have been characterized in detail, only a handful of galaxies at high redshift (z>4) have been examined in such a way. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey observed a statistically significant sample of 118 star-forming main sequence galaxies at z=4.4-5.9 in [CII]158um emission, increasing the number of such observations by nearly 10x. A preliminary qualitative classification of these sources revealed a diversity of kinematic types (i.e., rotators, mergers, and dispersion-dominated systems). In this work, we supplement the initial classification by applying quantitative analyses to the ALPINE data: a tilted ring model (TRM) fitting code (3DBarolo), a morphological classification (Gini-M20), and a set of disk identification criteria. Of the 75 [CII]-detected ALPINE galaxies, 29 are detected at sufficient significance and spatial resolution to allow for TRM fitting and the derivation of morphological and kinematic parameters. These 29 sources constitute a high-mass subset of the ALPINE sample (M_*>10^9.5Msol). We robustly classify 14 of these sources (six rotators, five mergers, and three dispersion-dominated systems); the remaining sources showing complex behaviour. By exploring the G-M20 of z>4 rest-frame FIR and [CII] data for the first time, we find that our 1"~6kpc resolution data alone are insufficient to separate galaxy types. We compare the rotation curves and dynamical mass profiles of the six ALPINE rotators to the two previously detected z~4-6 unlensed main sequence rotators, finding high rotational velocities (~50-250km/s) and a diversity of rotation curve shapes., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures. Aim. Our aim is to analyse the variance of the Inter-Galactic Medium transmission (IGM) by studying this parameter in the rest-frame UV spectra of a large sample of high redshift galaxies. Method. We make use of the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey and the VANDELS public survey to have an insight into the far UV spectrum of $2.7

VANDELS is an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey designed to build a sample of high signal to noise, medium resolution spectra of galaxies at redshift between 1 and 6.5. Here we present the final Public Data Release of the VANDELS Survey, comprising 2087 redshift measurements. We give a detailed description of sample selection, observations and data reduction procedures. The final catalogue reaches a target selection completeness of 40% at iAB = 25. The high Signal to Noise ratio of the spectra (above 7 in 80% of the spectra) and the dispersion of 2.5{\AA} allowed us to measure redshifts with high precision, the redshift measurement success rate reaching almost 100%. Together with the redshift catalogue and the reduced spectra, we also provide optical mid-IR photometry and physical parameters derived through SED fitting. The observed galaxy sample comprises both passive and star forming galaxies covering a stellar mass range 8.3< Log(M*/Msolar)<11.7. We present a new mass function of galaxy clusters and groups using optical/near-infrared wavelength spectroscopic and photometric data from the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large-Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey. At $z\sim1$, cluster mass function studies are rare regardless of wavelength and have never been attempted from an optical/near-infrared perspective. This work serves as a proof of concept that $z\sim1$ cluster mass functions are achievable without supplemental X-ray or Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) data. Measurements of the cluster mass function provide important contraints on cosmological parameters and are complementary to other probes. With ORELSE, a new cluster finding technique based on Voronoi tessellation Monte-Carlo (VMC) mapping, and rigorous purity and completeness testing, we have obtained $\sim$240 galaxy overdensity candidates in the redshift range $0.55

Star formation rate (SFR) measurements at z>4 have relied mostly on rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations. The corrections for dust attenuation based on IRX-$\beta$ relation are highly uncertain and are still debated in the literature. Hence, rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) observations are necessary to constrain the dust-obscured component of the SFR. In this paper, we exploit the rest-frame FIR continuum observations collected by the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) to directly constrain the obscured SFR in galaxies at 4.4

We study the projected spatial offset between the ultraviolet continuum and Ly$\alpha$ emission for 65 lensed and unlensed galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization ($5\leq z\leq7$), the first such study at these redshifts, in order to understand the potential for these offsets to confuse estimates of the Ly$\alpha$ properties of galaxies observed in slit spectroscopy. While we find that ~40% of galaxies in our sample show significant projected spatial offsets ($|\Delta_{Ly\alpha-UV}|$), we find a modest average offset of 0.61$\pm$0.08 kpc. A small fraction of our sample, ~10%, exhibits offsets of 2-4 kpc, sizes that are larger than the effective radii of typical galaxies at these redshifts. An internal comparison and a comparison to studies at lower redshift yielded no significant evidence of evolution of $|\Delta_{Ly\alpha-UV}|$ with redshift. In our own sample, UV-bright galaxies showed offsets a factor of three greater than their fainter counterparts, 0.89$\pm$0.18 vs. 0.27$\pm$0.05 kpc, respectively. We argue that offsets are likely not the result of merging processes, but are rather due to internal anisotropic processes resulting from stellar feedback facilitates Ly$\alpha$ fluorescence and/or backscattering from nearby or outflowing gas. The reduction in the Ly$\alpha$ flux due to offset effects for various observational setups was quantified through mock observations of simple simulations. It was found that the loss of Ly$\alpha$ photons for galaxies with average offsets is not, if corrected for, a limiting factor for all but the narrowest slit widths (<0.4''). However, for the largest offsets, if such offsets are mostly perpendicular to the slit major axis, slit losses were found to be extremely severe in cases where slit widths of $\leq$1'' were employed, such as those planned for James Webb Space Telescope/NIRSpec observations. We present the detailed characterisation of a sample of 56 sources serendipitously detected in ALMA band 7, as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early Times (ALPINE) in COSMOS and ECDFS. These sources have been used to derive the total infrared luminosity function (LF) and to estimate the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) up to z=6. We have looked for counterparts in all the available multi-wavelength and photometric redshift catalogues, and in deeper near- and mid-IR source lists and maps, to identify optically dark sources with no matches in the public catalogues. Our ALMA blind survey allows us to push further the study of the nature and evolution of dusty galaxies at high-z, identifying luminous and massive sources to redshifts and faint luminosities never probed before by any far-infrared surveys. The ALPINE data are the first ones to sample the faint-end of the infrared LF, showing little evolution from z=2.5 to z=6, and a flat slope up to the highest redshifts. The SFRD obtained by integrating the luminosity function remains almost constant between z=2 and 6, and significantly higher than the optical/UV derivations, showing an important contribution of dusty galaxies and obscured star formation up to high-z. About 14 per cent of the ALPINE serendipitous continuum sources are optically+near-IR dark (six show a counterpart only in the mid-IR and no HST or near-IR identification, while two are detected as [CII] emitters at z=5). The six HST and near-IR dark galaxies with mid-IR counterpart contribute for about 17 per cent of the total SFRD at z=5 and dominate the high-mass end of the stellar mass function at z>3., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures. We present the [CII]158$\mu$m line luminosity functions (LFs) at $z\sim4-6$ using the ALMA observations of 118 sources, which are selected to have UV luminosity $M_{1500A}<-20.2$ and optical spectroscopic redshifts in COSMOS and ECDF-S. Of the 118 targets, 75 have significant [CII] detections and 43 are upper limits. This is by far the largest sample of [CII] detections which allows us to set constraints to the volume density of [CII] emitters at $z\sim4-6$. But because this is a UV-selected sample, we are missing [CII]-bright but UV-faint sources making our constraints strict lower limits. Our derived LFs are statistically consistent with the $z\sim0$ [CII] LF at $10^{8.25} - 10^{9.75}L_\odot$. We compare our results with the upper limits of the [CII] LF derived from serendipitous sources in the ALPINE maps (Loiacono et al. 2020). We also infer the [CII] LFs based on published far-IR and CO LFs at $z\sim4-6$. Combining our robust lower limits with these additional estimates, we set further constraints to the true number density of [CII] emitters at $z\sim 4 - 6$. These additional LF estimates are largely above our LF at $L_{[CII]}>10^9L_{\odot}$, suggesting that UV-faint but [CII]-bright sources likely make a significant contributions to the [CII] emitter volume density. When we include all the LF estimates, we find that available model predictions underestimate the number densities of [CII] emitters at $z\sim4-6$. Finally, we set a constraint on the molecular gas mass density at $z\sim4-6$, with $\rho_{mol} \sim (2-7)\times10^7M_\odot$\,Mpc$^{-3}$. We present ALMA observations of a merging system at z ~ 4.57, observed as a part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. Combining ALMA [CII] 158 micron and far-infrared continuum data with multi-wavelength ancillary data we find that the system is composed of two massive (Mstar >~ 10^10 Msun) star-forming galaxies experiencing a major merger (stellar mass ratio r_mass ~ 0.9) at close spatial (~13 kpc; projected) and velocity (delta_v < 300 km/s) separations, and two additional faint narrow [CII]-emitting satellites. The overall system belongs to a larger-scale protocluster environment and is coincident to one of its overdensity peaks. ALMA reveals also the presence of [CII] emission arising from a circumgalactic gas structure, extending up to a diameter-scale of ~30 kpc. Our morpho-spectral decomposition analysis shows that about 50% of the total flux resides between the individual galaxy components, in a metal-enriched gaseous envelope characterized by a disturbed morphology and complex kinematics. Similarly to observations of shock-excited [CII] emitted from tidal tails in local groups, our results can be interpreted as a possible signature of interstellar gas stripped by strong gravitational interactions, with a possible contribution from material ejected by galactic outflows and emission triggered by star formation in small faint satellites. Our findings suggest that mergers could be an efficient mechanism of gas mixing in the circumgalactic medium around high-z galaxies, and thus play a key role in the galaxy baryon cycle at early epochs., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. The molecular gas content of normal galaxies at z>4 is poorly constrained, because the commonly used molecular gas tracers become hard to detect. We use the [CII]158um luminosity, recently proposed as a molecular gas tracer, to estimate the molecular gas content in a large sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z=4.4-5.9, with a median stellar mass of 10^9.7 Msun, drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. The agreement between molecular gas masses derived from [CII] luminosity, dynamical mass, and rest-frame 850um luminosity, extrapolated from the rest-frame 158um continuum, supports [CII] as a reliable tracer of molecular gas in our sample. We find a continuous decline of the molecular gas depletion timescale from z=0 to z=5.9, which reaches a mean value of (4.6+/-0.8)x10^8 yr at z~5.5, only a factor of 2-3 shorter than in present-day galaxies. This suggests a mild enhancement of star formation efficiency toward high redshifts, unless the molecular gas fraction significantly increases. Our estimates show that the rise in molecular gas fraction as reported previously, flattens off above z~3.7 to achieve a mean value of 63%+/-3 over z=4.4-5.9. This redshift evolution of the gas fraction is in line with the one of the specific star formation rate. We use multi-epoch abundance matching to follow the gas fraction evolution over cosmic time of progenitors of z=0 Milky Way-like galaxies in 10^13 Msun halos and of more massive z=0 galaxies in 10^14 Msun halos. Interestingly, the former progenitors show a monotonic decrease of the gas fraction with cosmic time, while the latter show a constant gas fraction from z=5.9 to z~2 and a decrease at z<2. We discuss three possible effects, namely outflows, halt of gas supplying, and over-efficient star formation, which may jointly contribute to the gas fraction plateau of the latter massive galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. We present dust attenuation properties of spectroscopically confirmed star forming galaxies on the main sequence at a redshift of ~4.4-5.8. Our analyses are based on the far infrared continuum observations of 118 galaxies at rest-frame 158{\mu}m obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). We study the connection between the ultraviolet (UV) spectral slope ($\beta$), stellar mass (M_*), and infrared excess (IRX=L_IR/L_UV). Twenty-three galaxies are individually detected in the continuum at >3.5 sigma significance. We perform a stacking analysis using both detections and nondetections to study the average dust attenuation properties at z~4.4-5.8. The individual detections and stacks show that the IRX-$\beta$ relation at z~5 is consistent with a steeper dust attenuation curve than typically found at lower redshifts (z<4). The attenuation curve is similar to or even steeper than that of the extinction curve of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This systematic change of the IRX-$\beta$ relation as a function of redshift suggests an evolution of dust attenuation properties at z>4. Similarly, we find that our galaxies have lower IRX values, up to 1dex on average, at a fixed mass compared to previously studied IRX-M_* relations at z<4, albeit with significant scatter. This implies a lower obscured fraction of star formation than at lower redshifts. Our results suggest that dust properties of UV-selected star forming galaxies at z>4 are characterised by (i) a steeper attenuation curve than at z<4, and (ii) a rapidly decreasing dust obscured fraction of star formation as a function of redshift. Nevertheless, even among this UV-selected sample, massive galaxies (log M_*/$M_\odot$>10) at z~5-6 already exhibit an obscured fraction of star formation of ~45%, indicating a rapid build-up of dust during the epoch of reionization., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. We present a new prospective analysis of deep multi-band imaging with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In this work, we investigate the recovery of high-redshift $56$ and redshifts $05$ galaxy samples can be reduced to $<0.01$ arcmin$^{-2}$ with a limited impact on galaxy completeness. We investigate multiple high-redshift galaxy selection techniques and find the best compromise between completeness and purity at $5

The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate the use of observed Euclid colours, on their own and together with ground-based u-band observations, for selecting quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The most efficient colour combination, among the ones tested in this work, consists of the (u-VIS) and (VIS-J) colours. We find that this combination allows users to select a sample of quiescent galaxies complete to above $\sim70\%$ and with less than 15$\%$ contamination at redshifts in the range $0.7565\%$ completeness level and contamination below 20$\%$ at $1

We present the physical extent of [CII] 158um line-emitting gas from 46 star-forming galaxies at z=4-6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early Times (ALPINE). Using exponential profile fits, we measure the effective radius of the [CII] line (r_e,[CII]) for individual galaxies and compare them with the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) continuum (r_e,UV) from Hubble Space Telescope images. The effective radius r_e,[CII] exceeds r_e,UV by factors of ~2-3 and the ratio of r_e,[CII]/r_e,UV increases as a function of M_star. We do not find strong evidence that [CII] line, the rest-frame UV, and FIR continuum are always displaced over ~ 1-kpc scale from each other. We identify 30% of isolated ALPINE sources as having an extended [CII] component over 10-kpc scales detected at 4.1$\sigma$-10.9$\sigma$ beyond the size of rest-frame UV and far-infrared (FIR) continuum. One object has tentative rotating features up to ~10-kpc, where the 3D model fit shows the rotating [CII]-gas disk spread over 4 times larger than the rest-frame UV-emitting region. Galaxies with the extended [CII] line structure have high star-formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (M_star), low Lya equivalent-width, and more blue-shifted (red-shifted) rest-frame UV metal absorption (Lya line), as compared to galaxies without such extended [CII] structures. Although we cannot rule out the possibility that a selection bias towards luminous objects may be responsible for such trends, the star-formation driven outflow also explains all these trends. The [CII] 158 micron line is one of the strongest IR emission lines, which has been shown to trace the star-formation rate (SFR) of galaxies in the nearby Universe and up to $z \sim 2$. Whether this is also the case at higher redshift and in the early Universe remains debated. The ALPINE survey, which targeted 118 star-forming galaxies at $4.4 < z< 5.9$, provides a new opportunity to examine this question with the first statistical dataset. Using the ALPINE data and earlier measurements from the literature we examine the relation between the [CII] luminosity and the SFR over the entire redshift range from $z \sim 4-8$. ALPINE galaxies, which are both detected in [CII] and dust continuum, show a good agreement with the local L([CII])-SFR relation. Galaxies undetected in the continuum with ALMA are found to be over-luminous in [CII], when the UV SFR is used. After accounting for dust-obscured star formation, by an amount SFR(IR)$\approx$SFR(UV) on average, which results from two different stacking methods and SED fitting, the ALPINE galaxies show an L([CII])-SFR relation comparable to the local one. When [CII] non-detections are taken into account, the slope may be marginally steeper at high-z, although this is still somewhat uncertain. When compared in a homogeneous manner, the $z>6 $ [CII] measurements (detections and upper limits) do not behave very differently from the $z \sim 4-6$ data. We find a weak dependence of L([CII])/SFR on the Lyman-alpha equivalent width. Finally, we find that the ratio L([CII])/LIR $\sim (1-3) \times 10^{-3}$ for the ALPINE sources, comparable to that of "normal" galaxies at lower redshift. Our analysis, which includes the largest sample ($\sim 150$ galaxies) of [CII] measurements at $z>4$ available so far, suggests no or little evolution of the L([CII])-SFR relation over the last 13 Gyr of cosmic time., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. The ALPINE-ALMA large program targets the [CII] 158 $\mu$m line and the far-infrared continuum in 118 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies between z=4.4 and z=5.9. It represents the first large [CII] statistical sample built in this redshift range. We present details of the data processing and the construction of the catalogs. We detected 23 of our targets in the continuum. To derive accurate infrared luminosities and obscured star formation rates, we measured the conversion factor from the ALMA 158 $\mu$m rest-frame dust continuum luminosity to the total infrared luminosity (L$_{\rm IR}$) after constraining the dust spectral energy distribution by stacking a photometric sample similar to ALPINE in ancillary single-dish far-infrared data. We found that our continuum detections have a median L$_{\rm IR}$ of 4.4$\times 10^{11}$ L$_\odot$. We also detected 57 additional continuum sources in our ALMA pointings. They are at lower redshift than the ALPINE targets, with a mean photometric redshift of 2.5$\pm$0.2. We measured the 850 $\mu$m number counts between 0.35 and 3.5 mJy, improving the current interferometric constraints in this flux density range. We found a slope break in the number counts around 3 mJy with a shallower slope below this value. More than 40 % of the cosmic infrared background is emitted by sources brighter than 0.35 mJy. Finally, we detected the [CII] line in 75 of our targets. Their median [CII] luminosity is 4.8$\times$10$^8$ L$_\odot$ and their median full width at half maximum is 252 km/s. After measuring the mean obscured SFR in various [CII] luminosity bins by stacking ALPINE continuum data, we find a good agreement between our data and the local and predicted SFR-L$_{\rm [CII]}$ relations of De Looze et al. The Lya line in the UV and the [CII] line in the FIR are widely used tools to identify galaxies and to obtain insights into ISM properties in the early Universe. By combining data obtained with ALMA in band 7 at ~ 320 GHz as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early Times (ALPINE) with spectroscopic data from DEIMOS at Keck, VIMOS and FORS2 at the VLT, we assembled a unique sample of 53 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 4.4 < z < 6 in which we detect both the Lya line and the [CII]. We used [CII], observed with ALMA, as a tracer of the systemic velocity of the galaxies, and we find that 90% of the selected objects have Lya-[CII] velocity offsets in the range 0 < Dv_Lya-[CII] < 400 km/s, in line with the few measurements available so far in the early Universe, and significantly smaller than those observed at lower z. We observe ISM-[CII] offsets in the range -500 < Dv_ISM-[CII] < 0 km/s, in line with values at all redshifts. We find significant anticorrelations between Dv_Lya-[CII] and the Lya rest-frame equivalent width EW0(Lya) (or equivalently, the Lya escape fraction f_esc(Lya)). According to available models for the radiative transfer of Lya photons, the escape of Lya photons would be favored in galaxies with high outflow velocities, in agreement with our observations. The uniform shell model would also predict that the Lya escape in galaxies with slow outflows (0 < v_out < 300 km/s) is mainly determined by the neutral hydrogen column density (NHI), while the alternative model by Steidel+10 would favor a combination of NHI and covering fraction as driver of the Lya escape. We suggest that the observed increase in Lya escape that is observed between z~2 and z~6 is not due to a higher incidence of fast outflows at high redshift, but rather to a decrease in average NHI along the line of sight, or alternatively, a decrease in HI covering fraction. We report the serendipitous discovery of a bright galaxy (Gal-A) observed as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). While this galaxy is detected both in line and continuum emission in ALMA Band 7, it is completely dark in UV/optical filters and only presents a marginal detection in the UltraVISTA Ks band. We discuss the nature of the observed ALMA line, i.e. whether the emission comes from [CII] at z~4.6, or from high-J CO transitions at z~2.2. In the first case we find a [CII]-to-FIR luminosity ratio of log(L_[CII]/L_FIR)=-2.5, consistent with the average value for local star-forming galaxies (SFGs); in the second case, instead, the source would lie outside of the empirical relations between L_CO and L_FIR found in the literature. At both redshifts, we derive the star-formation rate (SFR) from the ALMA continuum, and the stellar mass (M*) by using stellar population synthesis models as input for LePHARE spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. Exploiting our results, we believe that Gal-A is a Main-Sequence (MS), dusty SFG at z=4.6 (i.e. [CII] emitter) with log(SFR/[M/yr])~1.4 and log(M*/M)~9.7. This work underlines the crucial role of the ALPINE survey in making a census of this class of objects, in order to unveil their contribution to the global star-formation rate density (SFRD) of the Universe at the end of the Reionisation epoch., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. We present the ancillary data and basic physical measurements for the galaxies in the ALMA Large Program to Investigate C+ at Early Times (ALPINE) survey - the first large multi-wavelength survey which aims at characterizing the gas and dust properties of 118 main-sequence galaxies at redshifts 4.4 < z < 5.9 via the measurement of [CII]-emission at 158 micro-meter (64% at >3.5$\sigma$) and the surrounding far-infrared (FIR) continuum in conjunction with a wealth of optical and near-infrared data. We outline in detail the spectroscopic data and selection of the galaxies as well as the ground- and space-based imaging products. In addition, we provide several basic measurements including stellar masses, star formation rates (SFR), rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) luminosities, UV continuum slopes ($\beta$), and absorption line redshifts, as well as H-alpha emission derived from Spitzer colors. We find that the ALPINE sample is representative of the 4 < z < 6 galaxy population selected by photometric methods and only slightly biased towards bluer colors ($\Delta\beta$ ~ 0.2). Using [CII] as tracer of the systemic redshift (confirmed for one galaxy at z=4.5 out of 118 for which we obtained optical [OII]$\lambda$3727A emission), we confirm red shifted Ly-alpha emission and blue shifted absorption lines similar to findings at lower redshifts. By stacking the rest-frame UV spectra in the [CII] rest-frame we find that the absorption lines in galaxies with high specific SFR are more blue shifted, which could be indicative of stronger winds and outflows., Comment: 48 pages, 33 figures, 7 tables (including Appendix), accepted for publication in ApJS

Aims. Our aim is to estimate the intergalactic medium transmission towards UV-selected star-forming galaxies at redshift 4 and above and study the effect of the dust attenuation on these measurements. Methods. The ultra-violet spectrum of high redshift galaxies is a combination of their intrinsic emission and the effect of the Inter-Galactic medium (IGM) absorption along their line of sight. Using data coming from the unprecedented deep spectroscopy from the VANDELS ESO public survey carried out with the VIMOS instrument we compute both the dust extinction and the mean transmission of the IGM as well as its scatter from a set of 281 galaxies at z>3.87. Because of a degeneracy between the dust content of the galaxy and the IGM, we first estimate the stellar dust extinction parameter E(B-V) and study the result as a function of the dust prescription. Using these measurements as constraint for the spectral fit we estimate the IGM transmission Tr(Lyalpha). Both photometric and spectroscopic SED fitting are done using the SPectroscopy And photometRy fiTting tool for Astronomical aNalysis (SPARTAN) that is able to fit the spectral continuum of the galaxies as well as photometric data. Results. Using the classical Calzetti's attenuation law we find that E(B-V) goes from 0.11 at z=3.99 to 0.08 at z=5.15. These results are in very good agreement with previous measurements from the literature. We estimate the IGM transmission and find that the transmission is decreasing with increasing redshift from Tr(Lyalpha)=0.53 at z=3.99 to 0.28 at z=5.15. We also find a large standard deviation around the average transmission that is more than 0.1 at every redshift. The ALMA-ALPINE [CII] survey is aimed at characterizing the properties of a sample of normal star-forming galaxies (SFGs). The ALMA Large Program to INvestigate (ALPINE) features 118 galaxies observed in the [CII]-158$\mu$m line and far infrared (FIR) continuum emission during the period of rapid mass assembly, right after the end of the HI reionization, at redshifts of 45). Based on a visual inspection of the [CII] data cubes together with the large wealth of ancillary data, we find a surprisingly wide range of galaxy types, including 40% that are mergers, 20% extended and dispersion-dominated, 13% compact, and 11% rotating discs, with the remaining 16% too faint to be classified. This diversity indicates that a wide array of physical processes must be at work at this epoch, first and foremost, those of galaxy mergers. We study the efficiency of galactic feedback in the early Universe by stacking the [C II] 158 um emission in a large sample of normal star-forming galaxies at 4 < z < 6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [C II] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. Searching for typical signatures of outflows in the high-velocity tails of the stacked [C II] profile, we observe (i) deviations from a single-component Gaussian model in the combined residuals and (ii) broad emission in the stacked [C II] spectrum, with velocities of |v|<~ 500 km/s. The significance of these features increases when stacking the subset of galaxies with star formation rates (SFRs) higher than the median (SFRmed = 25 Msun/yr), thus confirming their star-formation-driven nature. The estimated mass outflow rates are comparable to the SFRs, yielding mass-loading factors of the order of unity (similarly to local star-forming galaxies), suggesting that star-formation-driven feedback may play a lesser role in quenching galaxies at z > 4. From the stacking analysis of the datacubes, we find that the combined [C II] core emission (|v|< 200 km/s) of the higher-SFR galaxies is extended on physical sizes of ~ 30 kpc (diameter scale), well beyond the analogous [C II] core emission of lower-SFR galaxies and the stacked far-infrared continuum. The detection of such extended metal-enriched gas, likely tracing circumgalactic gas enriched by past outflows, corroborates previous similar studies, confirming that baryon cycle and gas exchanges with the circumgalactic medium are at work in normal star-forming galaxies already at early epochs., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. Aims. We seek is to identify old and massive galaxies at 0.5

We use the statistics of the VIPERS survey to investigate the relation between the surface mean stellar mass density Sigma=Mstar/(2*pi*Re^2) of massive passive galaxies (MPGs, Mstar>10^11 Msun) and their environment in the redshift range 0.52*10^11 Msun, we find an excess of MPGs with low Sigma and a deficit of high-Sigma MPGs in the densest regions wrt other environments. We interpret this result as due to the migration of some high-Sigma MPGs (<1% of the total population of MPGs) into low-Sigma MPGs, probably through mergers or cannibalism of small satellites. In summary, our results imply that the accretion of satellite galaxies has a marginal role in the mass-assembly history of most MPGs. We have previously found that the number density of VIPERS massive star-forming galaxies (MSFGs) declines rapidily from z=0.8 to z=0.5, which mirrors the rapid increase in the number density of MPGs. This indicates that the MSFGs at z>0.8 migrate to the MPG population. Here, we investigate the Sigma-delta relation of MSFGs at z>0.8 and find that it is consistent within 1 sigma with that of low-Sigma MPGs at z<0.8. Thus, the results of this and our previous paper show that MSFGs at z>0.8 are consistent in terms of number and environment with being the progenitors of low-Sigma MPGs at z<0.8., Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

We report the detection of [CII]158um emission from a system of three closely-separated sources in the COSMOS field at z~4.56, as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early times (ALPINE). The two dominant sources are closely associated, both spatially (1.6"~11kpc) and in velocity (~100km/s), while the third source is slightly more distant (2.8"~18kpc, ~300km/s). The second strongest source features a slight velocity gradient, while no significant velocity gradient is seen in the other two sources. Using the observed [CII] luminosities, we derive a total log(SFR_[CII]/[Msol/year])=2.8+/-0.2, which may be split into contributions of 59%, 31%, and 10% from the central, east, and west sources, respectively. Comparison of these [CII] detections to recent zoom-in cosmological simulations suggests an ongoing major merger. We are thus witnessing a system in a major phase of mass build-up by merging, including an on-going major merger and an upcoming minor merger, which is expected to end up in a single massive galaxy by z~2.5., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRASL

The James Webb Space Telescope will provide deep imaging and spectroscopy for sources at redshifts above 6, covering the Epoch of Reionization (EoR, 6 < z < 10). The Mid-IR instrument (MIRI) integral field spectrograph (MRS) will be the only instrument on board JWST able to observe the brightest optical emission lines H$\alpha$ and [OIII]0.5007$\mu$m at redshifts above 7 and 9, respectively. This paper presents a study of the H$\alpha$ fluxes predicted by FIRSTLIGHT cosmological simulations for galaxies at redshifts of 6.5 to 10.5, and its detectability with MIRI. Deep (40 ks) spectroscopic integrations with MRS will be able to detect (S/N > 5) EoR sources at redshifts above 7 with intrinsic star formation rates of more than 2 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and stellar masses above 4-9 $\times$ 10$^7$ M$_{\odot}$. In addition, the paper presents realistic MRS simulated observations of the expected (rest-frame) optical and near-infrared spectra for some spectroscopically confirmed EoR sources detected by ALMA as [OIII]88$\mu$m emitters. The MRS simulated spectra cover a wide range of low metallicities from about 0.2 to 0.02Z$_{\odot}$, and different [OIII]88$\mu$m/[OIII]0.5007$\mu$m line ratios. The simulated 10ks MRS spectra show S/N in the range of 5 to 90 for H$\beta$, [OIII]0.4959,0.5007$\mu$m, H$\alpha$ and HeI1.083$\mu$m emission lines of MACS1149-JD1 at z = 9.11, independent of metallicity. In addition, deep 40 ks simulated spectra of the luminous merger candidate B14-65666 at z=7.15 shows the MRS capabilities of detecting, or putting strong upper limits, on the [NII]0.6584$\mu$m, [SII]0.6717,0.6731$\mu$m, and [SIII]0.9069,0.9532$\mu$m emission lines. In summary, MRS will enable the detailed study of key physical properties like internal extinction, instantaneous star formation, hardness of the ionising continuum, and metallicity, in bright (intrinsic or lensed) EoR sources., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Stellar masses in future James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) deep blank-fields will be mainly derived fitting the spectral energy distribution with theoretical galaxy templates. We investigate the uncertainties and biases of the stellar masses derived by using the LePhare code for spectral energy distribution fitting and the Yggdrasil theoretical templates. We consider a sample of mock galaxies at z$=$7-10 with mock JWST observations with S/N$_{F150W}\geqslant$ 10. Our goal is to provide a list of statistical stellar mass corrections to include on the stellar mass derivation for different output galaxy properties and JWST filter combinations to correct for template degeneracies. Median statistical stellar mass corrections vary from -0.83 dex to 0.87 dex, while 25$\%$ (75$\%$) quartiles range from -0.83 dex (-0.67 dex) to 0.51 dex (0.88 dex), depending on filter combinations and galaxy models. The most challenging cases are galaxies with nebular emission lines, especially the ones that are wrongly identified as galaxies without, relative dust-free galaxies and galaxies with small metallicities (i.e. Z$=1/50Z_{\odot}$). The stellar mass estimation of galaxies correctly identified without emission lines is generally fine, except at z$=$10 when considering only the 8 NIRCam bands, which make the MIRI bands very valuable. We have tested our stellar mass corrections using the public JAGUAR galaxy catalogue, deriving that the average discrepancy in the recovered stellar mass distribution decreases by 20-50$\%$ at z$>$7 after the correction. We found that without the stellar-mass corrections the number of low-mass galaxies (M$^{*}<10^{7}M_{\odot}$) is overestimated, which can potentially lead to systematic errors in the calculation of the galaxy stellar mass function faint-end slope at high z., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication at the ApJS

The Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey is an ongoing imaging and spectroscopic campaign initially designed to study the effects of environment on galaxy evolution in high-redshift ($z\sim1$) large-scale structures. We use its rich data in combination with a powerful new technique, Voronoi tessellation Monte-Carlo (VMC) mapping, to search for serendipitous galaxy overdensities at $0.55 < z < 1.37$ within 15 ORELSE fields, a combined spectroscopic footprint of $\sim$1.4 square degrees. Through extensive tests with both observational data and our own mock galaxy catalogs, we optimize the method's many free parameters to maximize its efficacy for general overdensity searches. Our overdensity search yielded 402 new overdensity candidates with precisely measured redshifts and an unprecedented sensitivity down to low total overdensity masses ($\mathcal{M}_{tot} \gtrsim 5\times 10^{13} M_{\odot}$). Using the mock catalogs, we estimated the purity and completeness of our overdensity catalog as a function of redshift, total mass, and spectroscopic redshift fraction, finding impressive levels of both 0.92/0.83 and 0.60/0.49 for purity/completeness at $z=0.8$ and $z=1.2$, respectively, for all overdensity masses at spectroscopic fractions of $\sim$20%. With VMC mapping, we are able to measure precise systemic redshifts, provide an estimate of the total gravitating mass, and maintain high levels of purity and completeness at $z\sim1$ even with only moderate levels of spectroscopy. Other methods (e.g., red-sequence overdensities and hot medium reliant detections) begin to fail at similar redshifts, which attests to VMC mapping's potential to be a powerful tool for current and future wide-field galaxy evolution surveys at $z\sim1$ and beyond., Comment: 39 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables, accepted by MNRAS

We establish a robust statistical description of the star-forming galaxy population at the end of cosmic HI reionization ($5.0\le{}z\le6.6$) from a large sample of 52 galaxies with spectroscopically confirmed redshifts from the VIMOS UltraDeep Survey. We identify galaxies with Ly$\alpha$ either in absorption or in emission, at variance with most spectroscopic samples in the literature where Ly$\alpha$ emitters dominate. We find that star-forming galaxies at these redshifts are distributed along a main sequence in the stellar mass vs. SFR plane. We report a flat evolution of the sSFR(z) in 32. The bright end of the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity function has a high number density, indicating a significant star formation activity concentrated in the brightest Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAE) at these redshifts. LAE with EW>25\AA ~contribute to about 75\% of the total UV-derived SFRD. While our analysis favors a low dust content in 5.0

The VIPERS galaxy survey has measured the clustering of $0.5

[Abridged] We unveil the complex shape of a proto-supercluster at z~2.45 in the COSMOS field using the spectroscopic redshifts of the VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey (VUDS), complemented by the zCOSMOS-Deep sample and high-quality photometric redshifts. The method relies on a 2D Voronoi tessellation in overlapping redshift slices that is converted into a 3D density field. The galaxy distribution is constructed using a statistical treatment of spectroscopic and photometric redshifts. We identify a proto-supercluster, dubbed "Hyperion" for its immense size and mass, which extends over a volume of ~60x60x150 comoving Mpc^3 and has an estimated total mass of ~4.8x 10^15 M_sun. This immensely complex structure contains at least 7 density peaks within 2.4 < z < 2.5, connected by filaments. Based on the peaks average matter density, we estimate their total mass, M_tot, and find a range of masses from ~0.1x10^14 M_sun to ~2.7x10^14 M_sun. By using spectroscopic members of each peak, we obtain the velocity dispersion of the galaxies in the peaks, and then their virial mass M_vir (under the strong assumption that they are virialised). The agreement between M_vir and M_tot is surprisingly good, considering that almost all the peaks are probably not yet virialised. According to the spherical collapse model, the peaks have already started or are about to start collapsing, and they are all predicted to be virialised by redshift z~0.8-1.6. We finally perform a careful comparison with the literature, given that smaller components of this proto-supercluster had previously been identified using heterogeneous galaxy samples. With VUDS, we obtain a panoramic view of this large structure, that encompasses, connects, and considerably expands in a homogeneous way on all previous detections of the various sub-components. Techniques to classify galaxies solely based on photometry will be necessary for future large cosmology missions, such as Euclid or LSST. However, the precision of classification is always lower in photometric surveys and can be systematically biased with respect to classifications based upon spectroscopic data. We verified how precisely the detailed classification scheme introduced by Siudek et al. (2018, hereafter: S1) for galaxies at z~0.7 could be reproduced if only photometric data are available. We applied the Fisher Expectation-Maximization (FEM) unsupervised clustering algorithm to 54,293 VIPERS galaxies working in a parameter space of reliable photometric redshifts and 12 corresponding rest-frame magnitudes. The FEM algorithm distinguishes four main groups: (1) red, (2) green, (3) blue, and (4) outliers. Each group is further divided into 3, 3, 4, and 2 subclasses, respectively. The accuracy of reproducing galaxy classes using spectroscopic data is high: 92%, 84%, 96% for red, green, and blue classes, respectively, except for dusty star-forming galaxies. Various galaxy classification schemes have been developed so far to constrain the main physical processes regulating evolution of different galaxy types. In the era of a deluge of astrophysical information and recent progress in machine learning, a new approach to galaxy classification becomes imperative. We employ a Fisher Expectation-Maximization unsupervised algorithm working in a parameter space of 12 rest-frame magnitudes and spectroscopic redshift. The model (DBk) and the number of classes (12) were established based on the joint analysis of standard statistical criteria and confirmed by the analysis of the galaxy distribution with respect to a number of classes and their properties. This new approach allows us to classify galaxies based just on their redshifts and UV-NIR spectral energy distributions. The FEM unsupervised algorithm has automatically distinguished 12 classes: 11 classes of VIPERS galaxies and an additional class of broad-line AGNs. After a first broad division into blue, green and red categories we obtained a further sub-division into three red, three green, and five blue galaxy classes. The FEM classes follow the galaxy sequence from the earliest to the latest types that is reflected in their colours (which are constructed from rest-frame magnitudes used in classification procedure) but also their morphological, physical, and spectroscopic properties (not included in the classification scheme). We demonstrate that the members of each class share similar physical and spectral properties. In particular, we are able to find three different classes of red passive galaxy populations. Thus, we demonstrate the potential of an unsupervised approach to galaxy classification and we retrieve the complexity of galaxy populations at z~0.7, a task that usual simpler colour-based approaches cannot fulfil., Comment: published in A&A, 27 pages, 10 figures, 4 appendixes. This paper describes the observations and the first data release (DR1) of the ESO public spectroscopic survey "VANDELS, a deep VIMOS survey of the CANDELS CDFS and UDS fields". VANDELS' main targets are star-forming galaxies at 2.4

VANDELS is a uniquely-deep spectroscopic survey of high-redshift galaxies with the VIMOS spectrograph on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). The survey has obtained ultra-deep optical (0.48 < lambda < 1.0 micron) spectroscopy of ~2100 galaxies within the redshift interval 1.0 < z < 7.0, over a total area of ~0.2 sq. degrees centred on the CANDELS UDS and CDFS fields. Based on accurate photometric redshift pre-selection, 85% of the galaxies targeted by VANDELS were selected to be at z>=3. Exploiting the red sensitivity of the refurbished VIMOS spectrograph, the fundamental aim of the survey is to provide the high signal-to-noise ratio spectra necessary to measure key physical properties such as stellar population ages, masses, metallicities and outflow velocities from detailed absorption-line studies. Using integration times calculated to produce an approximately constant signal-to-noise ratio (20 < t_int < 80 hours), the VANDELS survey targeted: a) bright star-forming galaxies at 2.4 < z < 5.5, b) massive quiescent galaxies at 1.0 < z < 2.5, c) fainter star-forming galaxies at 3.0 < z < 7.0 and d) X-ray/Spitzer-selected active galactic nuclei and Herschel-detected galaxies. By targeting two extragalactic survey fields with superb multi-wavelength imaging data, VANDELS will produce a unique legacy data set for exploring the physics underpinning high-redshift galaxy evolution. The Spitzer Matching Survey of the UltraVISTA Ultra-deep Stripes (SMUVS) has obtained the largest ultra-deep Spitzer maps to date in a single field of the sky. We considered the sample of about 66,000 SMUVS sources at $z=2-6$ to investigate the evolution of dusty and non-dusty galaxies with stellar mass through the analysis of the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF). We further divide our non-dusty galaxy sample with rest-frame optical colours to isolate red quiescent (`passive') galaxies. At each redshift, we identify a characteristic stellar mass in the GSMF above which dusty galaxies dominate, or are at least as important as non-dusty galaxies. Below that stellar mass, non-dusty galaxies comprise about 80% of all sources, at all redshifts except at $z=4-5$. The percentage of dusty galaxies at $z=4-5$ is unusually high: 30-40% for $M_{*}=10^9 - 10^{10.5} \, \rm M_\odot$ and $>80\%$ at $M_*>10^{11} \, \rm M_\odot$, which indicates that dust obscuration is of major importance in this cosmic period. The overall percentage of massive ($\log_{10} (M_*/M_\odot)>10.6$) galaxies that are quiescent increases with decreasing redshift, reaching $>30\%$ at $z\sim2$. Instead, the quiescent percentage among intermediate-mass galaxies (with $\log_{10} (M_*/M_\odot)=9.7-10.6$) stays roughly constant at a $\sim 10\%$ level. Our results indicate that massive and intermediate-mass galaxies clearly have different evolutionary paths in the young Universe, and are consistent with the scenario of galaxy downsizing., Comment: Final version accepted for publication at the ApJ.
