The brain mechanisms underlying the risk of cannabis use disorder (CUD) are poorly understood. Several studies have reported changes in functional connectivity (FC) in CUD, although none have focused on the study of time‐varying patterns of FC. To fill this important gap of knowledge, 39 individuals at risk for CUD and 55 controls, stratified by their score on a self‐screening questionnaire for cannabis‐related problems (CUDIT‐R), underwent resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Dynamic functional connectivity (dFNC) was estimated using independent component analysis, sliding‐time window correlations, cluster states and meta‐state indices of global dynamics and were compared among groups. At‐risk individuals stayed longer in a cluster state with higher within and reduced between network dFNC for the subcortical, sensory‐motor, visual, cognitive‐control and default‐mode networks, relative to controls. More globally, at‐risk individuals had a greater number of meta‐states and transitions between them and a longer state span and total distance between meta‐states in the state space. Our findings suggest that the risk of CUD is associated with an increased dynamic fluidity and dynamic range of FC. This may result in altered stability and engagement of the brain networks, which can ultimately translate into altered cortical and subcortical function conveying CUD risk. Identifying these changes in brain function can pave the way for early pharmacological and neurostimulation treatment of CUD, as much as they could facilitate the stratification of high‐risk individuals. A 10-field theory for second-grade viscoelastic fluids is developed in the framework of Rational Extended Thermodynamics. The field variables are the density, the velocity, the temperature and the stress tensor. The particular case of an adiabatic fluid is considered. The field equations are determined by use of physical universal principles such as the Galileian and the Entropy Principles. As already proved, Rational Extended Thermodynamics is able to eliminate some inconsistencies with experiments that arise in Classical Thermodynamics. Moreover, the paper shows that, if the quadratic terms are taken into account, the classical constitutive relations for a second-grade fluid can be obtained as a limit case of the field equations of the present theory. Gliomas are diffusely infiltrating brain tumors whose prognosis is strongly influenced by their extent of invasion into the surrounding brain tissue. While lower-grade gliomas present more circumscribed borders, high-grade gliomas are aggressive tumors with widespread brain infiltration and dissemination. Glioblastoma (GBM) is known for its high invasiveness and association with poor prognosis. Its low survival rate is due to the certainty of its recurrence, caused by microscopic brain infiltration which makes surgical eradication unattainable. New insights into GBM biology at the single-cell level have enabled the identification of mechanisms exploited by glioma cells for brain invasion. In this review, we explore the current understanding of several molecular pathways and mechanisms used by tumor cells to invade normal brain tissue. We address the intrinsic biological drivers of tumor cell invasion, by tackling how tumor cells interact with each other and with the tumor microenvironment (TME). We focus on the recently discovered neuronal niche in the TME, including local as well as distant neurons, contributing to glioma growth and invasion. We then address the mechanisms of invasion promoted by astrocytes and immune cells. Finally, we review the current literature on the therapeutic targeting of the molecular mechanisms of invasion. BACKGROUND Limited data exist for the efficacy of topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and imiquimod for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) in situ (cSCCis) with positive histologic margins at the time of diagnosis. OBJECTIVE Identify the efficacy of topical 5-FU and imiquimod in the treatment of cSCCis with positive histologic margins at the time of diagnosis in relation to clinical risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pathology records were screened at a single institution from 2014 to 2021 for cSCCis with positive histologic margins. Patients were included if they were treated with curative intent with topical 5-FU or imiquimod. Recurrences were evaluated in relation to multiple clinical risk factors. RESULTS Of 215 patients treated with 5-FU or imiquimod after biopsy-proven cSCCis, 19 patients had recurrent cSCCis and 1 patient had upstaging to invasive cSCC. Recurrence was more likely in larger lesions at the time of initial biopsy (p = .033) and in patients treated with topical imiquimod compared with topical 5-FU (p < .01). CONCLUSION Topical 5-FU is an appropriate therapy for cSCCis in the correct clinical scenario. Extra consideration should be taken for use of 5-FU in larger diameter cSCCis lesions. Background: Ankle arthroscopy is indicated for both diagnosis and treatment of a large spectrum of common ankle disorders. It has certain advantages over the open procedure; however, it is important to recognize that there are some complications associated with it. Infections after this procedure are quite uncommon, with an overall estimated incidence of 2%. Given the low incidence of infections after ankle arthroscopy, not a great deal of literature on the topic has been published. The present review aims to provide an overview of the incidence, diagnosis, and treatment of infections after ankle arthroscopy. Methods: A systematic review of the literature indexed in the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases using search term "ankle arthroscopy infections" was performed in November 2023. No restrictions were applied concerning the date of publication. The Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) were followed. Among all surgical operations for the treatment of ankle and foot pathologies, we included articles with a described superficial or deep infection after ankle arthroscopy. Results: The search resulted in 201 studies. Only 21 studies met our inclusion criteria, and they were included in this systematic review. We evaluated 1706 patients who underwent 1720 arthroscopic tibiotalar procedures at an average age of 42 years old. Out of the 1720 procedures, 41 (2%) were complicated by infection. We divided infectious complications into superficial (68%; 28/41) and deep (32%; 13/41) infections. The most common pathogen isolated was Staphylococcus aureus. Arthroscopic arthrodesis was found to be the most affected by deep infections. Conclusions: Infection after ankle arthroscopy is an uncommon complication. Superficial infections were successfully treated with antibiotics, while surgical debridement, arthroscopic drainage, and intravenous antibiotics were necessary in cases of deep infections. Considering the amount of information on pathogens associated with knee and shoulder infections, there is still a lack of literature on pathogens associated with ankle infections, which makes their management difficulty. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) can be used to map spatial variations in electrical properties such as sheet conductivity, carrier density, and carrier mobility in graphene. Here, we consider wafer-scale graphene grown on germanium by chemical vapor deposition with non-uniformities and small domains due to reconstructions of the substrate during growth. The THz conductivity spectrum matches the predictions of the phenomenological Drude–Smith model for conductors with non-isotropic scattering caused by backscattering from boundaries and line defects. We compare the charge carrier mean free path determined by THz-TDS with the average defect distance assessed by Raman spectroscopy, and the grain boundary dimensions as determined by transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that even small angle orientation variations below 5° within graphene grains influence the scattering behavior, consistent with significant backscattering contributions from grain boundaries. Simple Summary: Hematological analysis represents a valid tool for the control of pathologies and stress in fish, playing a crucial role in evaluating the health status of this animal species. Moreover, serum protein distribution and concentration can be affected by different physiological and pathological conditions. In view of such considerations, this study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of two innovative automated methods (automated blood count counter and flow cytometry) for hematological investigation and serum total proteins and their electrophoretic fractions in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The findings obtained in the current study support the idea that the two hematological methods investigated could be useful in implementing the applicability of automated instrumental techniques in aquaculture. This study aimed to assess the usefulness of two innovative automated methods (automated blood count counters and flow cytometry) for hematological investigation in Tilapia to make a contribution to the clinical diagnostics of this farmed species. Moreover, serum total proteins and their electrophoretic fractions (prealbumin, albumin, α-, β-, and γ-fraction), as health condition indicators, were assessed. The analysis of serum total proteins and electrophoretic fraction showed a normal and typical electrophoretic pattern of healthy fish (serum total proteins, 3.70 ± 0.62 g/dL; prealbumin, 0.44 ± 0.20 g/dL; albumin, 1.17 ± 0.66 g/dL; α-fraction, 1.49 ± 0.64 g/dL; β-fraction, 0.32 ± 0.16 g/dL; and γ-fraction, 0.29 ± 0.13 g/dL). The relationships between the values of red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and thrombocytes (TCs) obtained with the two automated methods were determined using Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed a significant positive correlation between automatic blood cell counting and flow cytometry analysis for RBCs (r = 0.97, p < 0.0001) and WBCs (r = 0.91, p < 0.0001), whereas no correlation was found for TCs (r = −0.11, p = 0.66). The preliminary results gathered in this study seem to highlight the usefulness of the new analytical techniques herein investigated in tilapia, suggesting their application in the hematological investigation of farmed fish species and their usefulness for monitoring the health and well-being of fish reared in aquaculture. Fear extinction is a phenomenon that involves a gradual reduction in conditioned fear responses through repeated exposure to fear-inducing cues. Functional brain connectivity assessments, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), provide valuable insights into how brain regions communicate during these processes. Stress, a ubiquitous aspect of life, influences fear learning and extinction by changing the activity of the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus, leading to enhanced fear responses and/or impaired extinction. Glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) are key to the stress response and show a dual function in fear regulation: while they enhance the consolidation of fear memories, they also facilitate extinction. Accordingly, GR dysregulation is associated with anxiety and mood disorders. Recent advancements in cognitive neuroscience underscore the need for a comprehensive understanding that integrates perspectives from the molecular, cellular, and systems levels. In particular, neuropharmacology provides valuable insights into neurotransmitter and receptor systems, aiding the investigation of mechanisms underlying fear regulation and potential therapeutic targets. A notable player in this context is cortisol, a key stress hormone, which significantly influences both fear memory reconsolidation and extinction processes. Gaining a thorough understanding of these intricate interactions has implications in terms of addressing psychiatric disorders related to stress. Due to an increasing demand for electric power and changes in the typology of loads, stability has become a major concern in power systems. As the system stability is directly related to the response of the connected generator, recent research has focused on enhancing generators' stability and improving their response to load variations. This study focuses on adding another excitation winding on to the q-axis, perpendicular to the conventional excitation winding on the d-axis, to control both active and reactive power. This paper studies and compares the performance of the dual excitation synchronous generator (DESG) to conventional synchronous generators. The mathematical equations are derived, and a mathematical model is then developed. The experimental tests have been conducted using a laboratory model consisting of a two-phase synchronous generator driven by a DC motor with different loads. The obtained results and radial diagrams for the different loading types are presented and evaluated. Therefore, a new approach has been designed to connect the DESG directly to the power grid without any electronic components using a special coupling that works in one direction. Two perpendicular excitation coils, d and q, were formed from the existing coils, and the tests were carried out on all loads, ensuring that the revolving angle (i.e., the stability angle φ) was fixed. The results show that the proposed method offers significant cost savings, potentially amounting to 15–20% of the unit price. The experimental results confirm that the DESG significantly improves the generator stability by maintaining a constant rotor angle δ, which requires using an automatic angle regulator (AAR) in addition to the conventional automatic voltage regulator (AVR). We introduce a sequent system which is Gentzen algebraisable with orthomodular lattices as equivalent algebraic semantics, and therefore can be viewed as a calculus for orthomodular quantum logic. Bentheim Sandstone is considered a suitable conventional georeservoir rock even at great depth because of its mineral composition, homogeneity, micro- and macrostructure, and is also used as a reference material in rock deformation tests. However, a full characterization of the permeability at representative depths has never been performed. Here we report new experimental data where the permeability of Bentheim Sandstone is measured both with a simultaneous variation and with a sequential variation of three different variables to simulate georeservoir conditions. The results indicate a decrease in permeability with simulated increasing depth until 2–3 km, followed by a partial permeability recovery until 4–5 km depth. During the exhumation path, initially, permeability is unaffected, but at shallow depths, a sharp increase in permeability is observed, likely due to microcracking. These variations are a consequence of a complex interaction between stress, pore pressure and temperature, highlighting the importance of experiments considering all three variables when studying the evolution of permeability at depth. Multiple myeloma is a chronic hematologic malignancy that obstinately tends to relapse. Basic research has made giant strides in better characterizing the molecular mechanisms of the disease. The results have led to the manufacturing of new, revolutionary drugs which have been widely tested in clinical trials. These drugs have been approved and are now part of the therapeutic armamentarium. As a consequence, it is essential to combine what we know from clinical trials with real-world data in order to improve therapeutic strategies. Starting with this premise, our review aims to describe the currently employed regimens in multiple myeloma and compare clinical trials with real-life experiences. We also intend to put a spotlight on promising therapies such as T-cell engagers and chimeric antigen receptor T-cells (CAR-T) which are proving to be effective in changing the course of advanced-stage disease. Healthcare-related homicidal cases are not novel within the medical–legal landscape, but investigations are often made difficult with the scarcity of material evidence related to the crime. For this reason, it is necessary to carefully analyze the clinical documentation and employ ancillary forensic resources such as radiology, histopathology, and toxicology. In the presented scenario, the observation of 14 deaths from abnormal bleeding in a First-Level Italian Hospital revealed the administration of massive doses of heparin by a nurse. On behalf of the Judicial Authority, a multidisciplinary medical team investigated the case through the following steps: a thorough review of the clinical documentation, exhumation of the bodies belonging to the deceased patients, performing PMCT and autopsy, and collecting tissue samples for histopathological, immunohistochemical, and toxicological investigations. All the analyzed cases have been characterized by the observation of fatal hemorrhagic episodes not explained with the clinical conditions of the patients, confirmed using autopsy observations and the histological demonstration of the vitality of the lesions. However, due to the limited availability of biological material for the toxicological analysis, the indirect evidence from hematological analyses in hospitalized patients was crucial in demonstrating heparin overdose and its link to the recorded deaths. The present scenario demonstrates the fundamental importance of a multidisciplinary approach to cases of judicial interest related to the healthcare context. We study the inclusive Hb→ Xsγ decay with Hb a beauty baryon, in particular Λb, employing an expansion in the heavy quark mass at O m b − 3 at leading order in αs, keeping the dependence on the hadron spin. For a polarized baryon we compute the distribution d 2 Γ dy d cos θ P , with y = 2Eγ/mb, Eγ the photon energy and θP the angle between the baryon spin vector and the photon momentum in the Hb rest-frame. We discuss the correlation between the baryon and photon polarization, and show that effects of physics beyond the Standard Model can modify the photon polarization asymmetry. In woman and in animal models, estrogens are involved in iron (Fe) homeostasis supporting the hypothesis of the existence of an "estrogen-iron axis". Since advancing age leads to a decrease in estrogen levels, the mechanisms of Fe regulation could be compromised. In cyclic and pregnant mares, to date, there is evidence linking the iron state with estrogens pattern. Then, the objective of this study was to determine the relationship among Fe, ferritin (Ferr), hepcidin (Hepc) and estradiol-17β (E 2) in cyclic mares with advancing age. A total of 40 Spanish Purebred mares of different ranges of age was analyzed: 4–6 years (n = 10), 7–9 years (n = 10), 10–12 years (n = 10), and >12 years (n = 10). Blood samples were obtained on days −5, 0, +5 and + 16 of the cycle. Compared to mares of 4–6 years, serum Ferr was significantly higher (P < 0.01) and Fe significantly lower (P < 0.01) in mares >12 years of age. Hepc was significantly higher in mares >12 years (P < 0.01) than in those 7–9 years of age. E 2 levels were higher in mares of 7–9 years (P < 0.01) than in 4–6 and >12 years of age. Fe and Ferr were negatively correlated with Hepc (r = −0.71 and r = −0.02, respectively). E 2 was negatively correlated with Ferr and Hepc (r = −0.28 and r = −0.50, respectively), and positively with Fe (r = 0.31). There is a direct relationship between E 2 and Fe metabolism, mediated by the inhibition of Hepc in Spanish Purebred mares. The reduction of E 2 decreases the inhibitory effects on Hepc, increasing the levels of stored Fe and mobilizing less the free Fe in circulation. Based on the fact that ovarian estrogens participate in changes in the parameters indicative of iron status with age, the existence of an "estrogen-iron axis" in the mares'estrous cycle could be considered. Cognitive impairment has been associated with poor real-world functioning in patients with Schizophrenia. Previous studies have shown that pharmacological treatment with anticholinergic properties may contribute to cognitive impairment in Schizophrenia. We investigated the effect of the anticholinergic burden (ACB) on brain activity, cognition, and real-world functioning in Schizophrenia. We hypothesized that greater ACB would be associated with altered brain activity along with poorer cognitive performance and lower real-world functioning. A sample of 100 patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder was recruited in the naturalistic multicenter study of the Italian Network for Research on Psychoses (NIRP) across 7 centres. For each participant, ACB was evaluated using the Anticholinergic Cognitive Burden scale. The association of ACB with brain function was assessed using BOLD fMRI during the N-Back Working Memory (WM) task in a nested cohort (N = 31). Real-world functioning was assessed using the Specific Level of Functioning (SLOF) scale. Patients with high ACB scores (≥3) showed lower brain activity in the WM frontoparietal network (TFCE corrected alpha <0.05) and poorer cognitive performance (p = 0.05) than patients with low ACB scores (<3). Both effects were unaffected by demographic characteristics, clinical severity, and antipsychotic dosage. Moreover, patients with high ACB showed poorer real-world functioning than patients with lower ACB (p = 0.03). Our results suggest that ACB in Schizophrenia is associated with impaired WM and abnormal underlying brain function along with reduced real-world functioning. Phospholipase C (PLC) enzymes represent crucial participants in the plasma membrane of mammalian cells, including the cardiac sarcolemmal (SL) membrane of cardiomyocytes. They are responsible for the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns(4,5)P2) into 1,2-diacylglycerol (DAG) and inositol (1,4,5) trisphosphate (Ins(1,4,5)P3), both essential lipid mediators. These second messengers regulate the intracellular calcium (Ca2+) concentration, which activates signal transduction cascades involved in the regulation of cardiomyocyte activity. Of note, emerging evidence suggests that changes in cardiomyocytes' phospholipid profiles are associated with an increased occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the significant impact of PLC on the cardiovascular system, encompassing both physiological and pathological conditions. Specifically, it focuses on the relevance of PLCβ isoforms as potential cardiac biomarkers, due to their implications for pathological disorders, such as cardiac hypertrophy, diabetic cardiomyopathy, and myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. Gaining a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying PLCβ activation and regulation is crucial for unraveling the complex signaling networks involved in healthy and diseased myocardium. High mobility is a crucial requirement for a large variety of electronic device applications. The state of the art for high-quality graphene devices is based on heterostructures made with graphene encapsulated in > 40 nm-thick flakes of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Unfortunately, scaling up multilayer hBN while precisely controlling the number of layers remains an outstanding challenge, resulting in a rough material unable to enhance the mobility of graphene. This leads to the pursuit of alternative, scalable materials, which can be used as substrates and encapsulants for graphene. Tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a transition metal dichalcogenide, which was grown in large (∼mm-size) multi-layers by chemical vapor deposition. However, the resistance vs gate voltage characteristics when gating graphene through WS2 exhibit largely hysteretic shifts of the charge neutrality point on the order of Δ n ∼ 3 × 1011 cm−2, hindering the use of WS2 as a reliable encapsulant. The hysteresis originates due to the charge traps from sulfur vacancies present in WS2. In this work, we report the use of WS2 as a substrate and overcome the hysteresis issues by chemically treating WS2 with a super-acid, which passivates these vacancies and strips the surface from contaminants. The hysteresis is significantly reduced by about two orders of magnitude, down to values as low as Δ n ∼ 2 × 109 cm−2, while the room-temperature mobility of WS2-encapsulated graphene is as high as ∼62 × 103 cm2 V−1 s−1 at a carrier density of n ∼ 1 × 10 12 cm−2. When news about moral transgressions goes viral on social media, the same person may repeatedly encounter identical reports about a wrongdoing. In a longitudinal experiment (N = 607 U.S. adults from Mechanical Turk), we found that these repeated encounters can affect moral judgments. As participants went about their lives, we text-messaged them news headlines describing corporate wrongdoings (e.g., a cosmetics company harming animals). After 15 days, they rated these wrongdoings as less unethical than new wrongdoings. Extending prior laboratory research, these findings reveal that repetition can have a lasting effect on moral judgments in naturalistic settings, that affect plays a key role, and that increasing the number of repetitions generally makes moral judgments more lenient. Repetition also made fictitious descriptions of wrongdoing seem truer, connecting this moral-repetition effect with past work on the illusory-truth effect. These adjustments in Fe metabolism in humans and rodents are largely mediated by the hormone hepcidin (Hepc), which controls the expression of ferroportin (Fpn), a transporter responsible for exporting Fe from stores to extracellular fluid and plasma. These mechanisms based on the regulation of Hepc on the availability of Fe during gestation in healthy mares remain unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the existence of interrelationships among concentrations of Hepc, ferritin (Ferr), Fe, and estrone (E 1) and progesterone (P 4) in Spanish Purebred mares along the whole gestation. Blood samples were taken from 31 Spanish Purebred mares each month, during 11 months of pregnancy. Fe and Ferr significantly increased and Hepc decreased during pregnancy (P < 0.05). The secretion peak of estrone (E 1) was reached in the 5th month and progesterone (P 4) between the 2nd and 3rd months of gestation (P < 0.05). Fe and Ferr were weakly positively correlated (r = 0.57; P < 0.05). Fe and Ferr were negatively correlated with Hepc (r = −0.80 and r = −0.67, respectively) (P < 0.05). P 4 was positively correlated with Hepc (r = 0.53; P < 0.05). Pregnancy in the Spanish Purebred mare was characterized by a progressive increase in Fe and Ferr and a reduction in Hepc concentrations. In Schwarzschild spacetime, time-like geodesic equations, which define particle orbits, have a well-known formulation as a dynamical system in coordinates adapted to the time-like hypersurface containing the geodesic. For equatorial geodesics, the resulting dynamical system is shown to possess a conserved angular quantity and two conserved temporal quantities, whose properties and physical meaning are analogs of the conserved Laplace–Runge–Lenz vector, and its variant known as Hamilton's vector, in Newtonian gravity. When a particle orbit is projected into the spatial equatorial plane, the angular quantity yields the coordinate angle at which the orbit has either a turning point (where the radial velocity is zero) or a centripetal point (where the radial acceleration is zero). This is the same property as the angle of the respective Laplace–Runge–Lenz and Hamilton vectors in the plane of motion in Newtonian gravity. The temporal quantities yield the coordinate time and the proper time at which those points are reached on the orbit. In general, for orbits that have a single turning point, the three quantities are globally constant, and for orbits that possess more than one turning point, the temporal quantities are just locally constant as they jump at every successive turning point, while the angular quantity similarly jumps only if an orbit is precessing. The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has led to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide since its declaration as a global pandemic in March 2020. Alongside the typical respiratory symptoms, unusual clinical manifestations such as oral lichen planus (OLP) have been observed. OLP is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous dermatosis that results from a cell-mediated reaction, and its pathogenesis involves the loss of immunological tolerance. OLP has been associated with several triggering factors, such as certain drugs, stress, smoking, and even some viruses. Exposure to the spike protein antigen of SARS-CoV-2 during an infection can trigger autoimmune reactions and lead to the onset or flare of OLP. The E3 protein ligase TRIM21, which is identified in the lamina propria of OLP lesions, is overexpressed in COVID-19 patients and plays a critical role in autoimmune pathologies. Furthermore, the psychological stress of the lockdown and quarantine can be a trigger for the onset or exacerbation of OLP. However, the diagnosis of OLP is complex and requires a biopsy in order to confirm a clinical diagnosis, rule out other pathologies, and establish the most appropriate therapeutic procedure. During pregnancy, iron requirements are increased to meet optimal placental and fetal growth and the expansion of the maternal red-cell mass and to prevent complications related to the mother's iron deficiency anemia. Red-cell parameters and iron status provide consistent additional information for diagnosis of iron deficiency conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum iron status and its relation to hematological indexes in pregnant mares. Blood samples were taken from 31 Spanish Purebred mares over 11 months of pregnancy. Concentrations of iron (Fe), ferritin (Ferr), transferrin (T), and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) increased significantly and unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC) decreased as the pregnancy progressed without changes in red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin (HB) concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), and transferrin saturation (TSAT). Fe and Ferr were positively correlated (r=0.21). Fe and T (r=0.69) and Fe and TSAT (r=0.94) were positively correlated, and Fe and UIBC were negatively correlated (r=-0.69). T and TIBC were positively correlated (r=1.00). Pregnancy in the Spanish Purebred mare is characterized by a progressive increase in Fe, Ferr, T, and TIBC and a decrease in UIBC without modification in hematological indexes. RFI and the University of Rome Tor Vergata launched in 2018 a research on the mobile radio system that could replace the GSM-R. At the start of the study, LTE was a strong candidate for this role; however, the continuation of research and the rapid maturation of 5G have changed the application perspective in favour of the latter technology. We point out that the result of this study can be used for the methodological utility as basis for RAMS evaluations of the 5G system. The goal of this research work is to perform a reliability analysis and select the most suitable LTE (Long term Evolution) model according to Italian Infrastructure Manager’s (RFI-Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) needs. Through the Isograph tool, this research work has designed 6 LTE network models. Model 5 allows the LTE network to have a redundant architecture in the core parts, to be deployed to different (geographical) nodes and to work in the pool area. In conclusion, this research work shows that Model 5 is an adequate balance that combines, besides the value of total down-time, the high availability and the possibility to have a redundant network architecture. In intensive beef production systems, the increase in the prices of feed ingredients has led to changes in the feed formulations, and agri-food wastes can be valorised by incorporating them in diet formulations. In this context, the use of olive cake, a by-product of the olive oil industry, in the formulation of animal feed has been linked with positive effects on the quality of final products, but no previous studies have been conducted to evaluate the thyroid and adrenocortical response to a diet supplemented with olive cake in young growing Limousine beef calves. The present study reveals that the inclusion of olive cake at levels of 10% or 15% in grower/finisher beef diet formulations does not have a detrimental effect on maintaining the physiological thyroid and adrenocortical hormones' concentrations. Agro-industrial by-products incorporated into livestock feed formulations can positively impact feed costs and promote a circular bio-economy. Italy produces significant amounts of olive cake (OC), a by-product of olive oil extraction, with the potential for incorporation into bovine diets. However, information on its effects on endocrine responses in growing beef calves is lacking. Forty-eight Limousines randomly allocated to dietary treatment (control or 10%-OC or 15%-OC inclusion) were segregated according to sex and body weight. Serum concentrations of TSH, thyroid hormones, and cortisol were measured on day 0, day 56, and at the end of the trial on day 147. Circulating TSH, total (T3, T4) and free (fT3, fT4) iodothyronines, and cortisol concentrations were all within the normal physiological ranges, with no significant effect imparted by diet. However, the diet × time interaction was significant for T3. The cortisol, T3, T4, and fT4 registered on day 147 were higher than those of day 56, and cortisol was higher in heifers than bulls. Final body weight was positively correlated with TSH and T3 and negatively with cortisol concentration. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate discrepancies in prescription trends for analgesic medications in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) patients based on recommendations in the literature. Design: We conducted a retrospective case–control study. Subjects: A total of 2510 CRPS patients and 2510 demographic-matched controls participated in this study. Methods: The SlicerDicer feature in Epic was used to find patients diagnosed with CRPS I or II between January 2010 and November 2022. An equal number of age-, gender-, and race-matched controls without a CRPS diagnosis were retracted from Epic. General and CRPS-associated prescription frequencies for the following classes were retrieved for both cases and controls: benzodiazepines, bisphosphonates, calcitonin, capsaicin, neuropathic pain medications, NSAIDs, opioids, and steroids. Results: A total of 740 (29%) CRPS patients and 425 (17%) controls were prescribed benzodiazepines (95% CI 0.1–0.15), 154 (6.1%) CRPS patients and 52 (2.1%) controls were prescribed capsaicin (95% CI 0.03–0.05), 1837 (73%) CRPS patients and 927 (37%) controls were prescribed neuropathic pain medications (95% CI 0.05–0.34), 1769 (70%) CRPS patients and 1217 (48%) controls were prescribed opioids (95% CI 0.19–0.25), 1095 (44%) CRPS patients and 1217 (48%) controls were prescribed steroids (95% CI 0.08–0.14), and 1638 (65%) CRPS patients and 1765 (70%) controls were prescribed NSAIDs (95% CI −0.08–0.02), p < 0.001 for all classes. With CRPS-associated prescriptions, (95% CI 0.05–0.16, p < 0.001) more CRPS patients were prescribed opioids (N = 398, 59%) than controls (N = 327, 49%). Conclusions: CRPS is difficult to treat with significant variance in suggested treatment modalities. Insulin resistance (IR) and the associated hyperinsulinemia are early pathophysiological changes which, if not well treated, can lead to type 2 diabetes, endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. While diabetes care is fairly well standardized, the prevention and treatment of IR lacks a single pharmaceutical approach and many lifestyle and dietary interventions have been proposed, including a wide range of food supplements. Among the most interesting and well-known natural remedies, alkaloid berberine and the flavonol quercetin have particular relevance in the literature, while silymarin—the active principle of the Silybum marianum thistle—was traditionally used for lipid metabolism disorders and to sustain liver function. This review describes the major defects of insulin signaling leading to IR and the main properties of the three mentioned natural substances, their molecular targets and synergistic action mechanisms. The actions of berberine, quercetin and silymarin are partially superimposable as remedies against reactive oxygen intermediates generated by a high-lipid diet and by NADPH oxidase, which is triggered by phagocyte activation. Furthermore, these compounds inhibit the secretion of a battery of pro-inflammatory cytokines, modulate intestinal microbiota and are especially able to control the various disorders of the insulin receptor and post-receptor signaling systems. Although most of the evidence on the effects of berberine, quercetin and silymarin in modulating insulin resistance and preventing cardiovascular disease derive from experimental studies on animals, the amount of pre-clinical knowledge strongly suggests the need to investigate the therapeutic potential of these substances in human pathology. The WHO recently declared that COVID-19 no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern; however, lessons learned through the pandemic should not be left behind. Lung ultrasound was largely utilized as a diagnostic tool thanks to its feasibility, easy application, and the possibility to reduce the source of infection for health personnel. Lung ultrasound scores consist of grading systems used to guide diagnosis and medical decisions, owning a good prognostic value. In the emergency context of the pandemic, several lung ultrasound scores emerged either as new scores or as modifications of pre-existing ones. Our aim is to clarify the key aspects of lung ultrasound and lung ultrasound scores to standardize their clinical use in a non-pandemic context. The authors searched on PubMed for articles related to "COVID-19", "ultrasound", and "Score" until 5 May 2023; other keywords were "thoracic", "lung", "echography", and "diaphragm". A narrative summary of the results was made. Lung ultrasound scores are demonstrated to be an important tool for triage, prediction of severity, and aid in medical decisions. We conducted a retrospective/prospective worldwide study on patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) and a molecularly proven SARS-CoV-2 positivity. Preliminary results regarding 85 patients of the INTENSIVE study have been published in 2021. Now we are reporting the 2-year analysis. Here, we are reporting data from consecutive patients enrolled between 1 June 2020, and 31 May 2022. Among the 118 contacted centers, 25 were active to enroll and 19 actively recruiting at the time of data cut-off for a total of 280 patients enrolled. SARS-CoV-2 positivity occurred in 47.5% of patients in 2020, 35.1% in 2021, and 17.4% in 2022. The median age for COVID-19 diagnosis was 60 years. Well-differentiated tumors, non-functioning, metastatic stage, and gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) primary sites represented most of the NENs. COVID-19-related pneumonia occurred in 22.8% of the total, with 61.3% of them requiring hospitalization; 11 patients (3.9%) needed sub-intensive or intensive care unit therapies and 14 patients died (5%), in 11 cases (3.9%) directly related to COVID-19. Diabetes mellitus and age at COVID-19 diagnosis > 70 years were significantly associated with COVID-19 mortality, whereas thoracic primary site with COVID-19 morbidity. A significant decrease in both hospitalization and pneumonia occurred in 2022 vs 2020. In our largest series of NEN patients with COVID-19, the NEN population is similar to the general population of patients with NEN regardless of COVID-19. However, older age, non-GEP primary sites and diabetes mellitus should be carefully considered for increased COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. Introduction: In the last decade, compartmental surgery (CTS) has been the surgical approach of choice for advanced tumors of the tongue and oral floor. Methods: Advanced tumors (cT3–T4) oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) may extend beyond the lingual septum and involve the contralateral hemitongue, developing along the intrinsic transverse muscle. The disease may then involve the genioglossus muscle and, more laterally, the hyoglossus muscle. Results: The surgical approach to the contralateral tongue must be guided by anatomic and anatomopathological principles to achieve a safe oncological resection based on the principles of CTS. (1) Background: Head trauma represents the first cause of death in abused children, but diagnostic knowledge is still limited. The characteristic findings of abusive head trauma (AHT) are retinal hemorrhages (RH) and additional ocular findings, including optic nerve hemorrhages (ONH). However, etiological diagnosis must be cautious. (2) Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review (PRISMA) standards were employed, and the research focus was the current gold standard in the diagnosis and timing of abusive RH. (3) Results: Sixteen articles were included for qualitative synthesis. The importance of an early instrumental ophthalmological assessment emerged in subjects with a high suspicion of AHT, with attention to the localization, laterality, and morphology of the findings. Sometimes it is possible to observe the fundus even in deceased subjects, but the current techniques of choice consist of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography, also useful for the timing of the lesion, the autopsy, and the histological investigation, especially if performed with the use of immunohistochemical reactants against erythrocytes, leukocytes, and ischemic nerve cells. (4) Conclusions: The present review has made it possible to build an operational framework for the diagnosis and timing of cases of abusive retinal damage, but further research in the field is needed. Transfer RNAs (tRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) essential for protein translation. Emerging evidence suggests that tRNAs can also be processed into smaller fragments, tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs), a novel class of sncRNAs with powerful applications and high biological relevance to cancer. tsRNAs biogenesis is heterogeneous and involves different ribonucleases, such as Angiogenin and Dicer. For many years, tsRNAs were thought to be just degradation products. However, accumulating evidence shows their roles in gene expression: either directly via destabilising the mRNA or the ribosomal machinery, or indirectly via regulating the expression of ribosomal components. Furthermore, tsRNAs participate in various biological processes linked to cancer, including apoptosis, cell cycle, immune response, and retroviral insertion into the human genome. It is emerging that tsRNAs have significant therapeutic potential. Endogenous tsRNAs can be used as cancer biomarkers, while synthetic tsRNAs and antisense oligonucleotides can be employed to regulate gene expression. Background: Correlations between dopamine transporter (DAT) availability and Parkinson's disease (PD) motor symptoms vary depending on the imaging modality, choice of regions of interest and clinical measures. We aimed to validate the PET radioligand [18F]FE-PE2I as a clinical biomarker in PD, hypothesizing negative correlations between DAT availability in specified nigrostriatal regions with symptom duration, disease stage and motor symptom scores. Methods: We included 41 PD patients (age 45–79 years; H&Y stage < 3) and 37 healthy control subjects in a cross-sectional study with dynamic [18F]FE-PE2I PET. Binding potential (BPND) was estimated in the caudate nucleus, putamen, ventral striatum, sensorimotor striatum, and substantia nigra using the cerebellum as reference region. Results: We found negative correlations (p < 0.02) between symptom duration and BPND in the putamen and sensorimotor striatum (rs = −.42; rs = −.51), and between H&Y stage and BPND in caudate nucleus, putamen, sensorimotor striatum, and substantia nigra (rs between −.40 and −.54). The first correlations were better described with exponential fitting. MDS-UPDRS-III in 'OFF' state correlated negatively (p < 0.04) with BPND in the sensorimotor striatum (rs = −.47), and excluding tremor score also in the putamen (rs = −.45). Conclusion: Results are in agreement with earlier findings in in vivo and post-mortem studies and validate [18F]FE-PE2I as a functional PD biomarker for PD severity. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS. Increasing evidence suggests that vulnerable neurons in MS exhibit fatal metabolic exhaustion over time, a phenomenon hypothesized to be caused by chronic hyperexcitability. Axonal Kv7 (outward-rectifying) and oligodendroglial Kir4.1 (inward-rectifying) potassium channels have important roles in regulating neuronal excitability at and around the nodes of Ranvier. Here, we studied the spatial and functional relationship between neuronal Kv7 and oligodendroglial Kir4.1 channels and assessed the transcriptional and functional signatures of cortical and retinal projection neurons under physiological and inflammatory demyelinating conditions. We found that both channels became dysregulated in MS and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), with Kir4.1 channels being chronically downregulated and Kv7 channel subunits being transiently upregulated during inflammatory demyelination. Further, we observed that pharmacological Kv7 channel opening with retigabine reduced neuronal hyperexcitability in human and EAE neurons, improved clinical EAE signs, and rescued neuronal pathology in oligodendrocyte–Kir4.1–deficient (OL-Kir4.1–deficient) mice. In summary, our findings indicate that neuron-OL compensatory interactions promoted resilience through Kv7 and Kir4.1 channels and identify pharmacological activation of nodal Kv7 channels as a neuroprotective strategy against inflammatory demyelination. Due to the current digitalization of the Brazilian Credit market, boosted by the Open Banking and the Resolutions 4.656 and 4.657/2018, consumers have more access to Credit in various contracting channels, besides their bank branch only. This study aims to identify factors that impact on the consumer's preference for physical or digital channels to take out a Loan. To achieve this goal, a questionnaire was developed and applied, obtaining 498 respondents. The survey addresses interest rates, perception of security in the digital banking environment, customer's age and acceptance of innovation as factors that influence the decision. It is observed that the satisfactory relationship with the Institution impacts the choice of clients from Traditional Institutions, but not of clients from Non-Traditional ones. The contribution of this study is to bring an approach to the Loan product for the discussion of acceptance of the digital channel, as well as bringing an application to the Brazilian reality on this topic. Simple Summary: The present study provides new insights into the physiological changes in iron metabolism associated with the estrus cycle in Purebred Spanish mares. Relationships between estradiol-17β and progesterone with the levels of iron, ferritin, and hepcidin were evaluated. There is a relationship between progesterone concentrations with levels of iron, ferritin, and the estrous cycle, although with a different trend depending on the type of dominant hormone. Estrogen dominance during estrus appears to exhibit a more efficient iron status under hepcidin inhibition than progesterone during the luteal phase, as both circulating levels and iron stores are reduced due to hepcidin stimulation. Several studies have demonstrated that in woman the sex hormones such as estrogen (E2) and progesterone (P4) influence iron (Fe) regulation, contributing to variations in Fe parameters along the menstrual cycle. These mechanisms based on the regulation of hepcidin (Hepc) which limits Fe availability during the cycle, remain poorly characterized in healthy mares. The objective of this study was to establish the relationship between Hepc, Fe, ferritin (Ferr), and the primary ovarian hormones E2 and P4 in cycling Purebred Spanish mares. Blood samples were taken from 31 Purebred Spanish mares day −5, on day 0, day +5 and day +16 of the cycle. Fe and Ferr significantly increased and Hepc decreased during pre- and ovulatory periods. The secretion peak of estradiol-17β (E2) was reached on day 0 and progesterone (P4) between days +5 and +16. Fe and Ferr were positively correlated (r = 0.57). Fe and Ferr were negatively correlated with Hepc (r = −0.72 and r = −0.02, respectively). E2 and P4 were negatively and positively correlated with Hepc (r = −0.753 and r = 0.54, respectively). In cycling Purebred Spanish mares there is a measurable relationship between steroid hormones and systemic Fe metabolism. Estrogenic dominance in the pre- and ovulatory period allows for a more effective iron status, mediated by hepcidin inhibition. However, P4 during the luteal phase substantially reduces serum Fe and iron stores, possibly related to Hepc stimulation. Motivated by the improved results from the HPQCD lattice collaboration on the hadronic matrix elements entering ∆Ms,d in B s , d 0 − B ¯ s , d 0 mixings and the increase of the experimental branching ratio for Bs→ μ+μ−, we update our 2016 analysis of various flavour observables in four 331 models, M1, M3, M13 and M16 based on the gauge group SU(3)C× SU(3)L× U(1)X. These four models, which are distinguished by the quantum numbers, are selected among 24 331 models through their consistency with the electroweak precision tests and simultaneously by the relation C 9 NP = − bC 10 NP with 2 ≤ b ≤ 5, which after new result on Bs→ μ+μ− from CMS is favoured over the popular relation C 9 NP = − C 10 NP predicted by several leptoquark models. In this context we investigate in particular the dependence of various observables on |Vcb|, varying it in the broad range [0.0386, 0.043], that encompasses both its inclusive and exclusive determinations. Imposing the experimental constraints from εK, ∆Ms, ∆Md and the mixing induced CP asymmetries S ψ K S and S ψ K S , we investigate for which values of |Vcb| the four models can be made compatible with these data and what is the impact on B and K branching ratios. In particular we analyse NP contributions to the Wilson coefficients C9 and C10 and the decays Bs,d→ μ+μ−, K + → π + ν ν ¯ and K L → π 0 ν ν ¯ . This study aims to describe a new simple and efficient method of extracting DNA from filamentous fungi isolated from historical earthen walls. This method involves growing the mycelium on overlapping cellophane discs on solid medium and the disruption of the fungal cell wall by a combined action of liquid nitrogen and a lytic enzyme. The extraction is performed with the PureLink ™ Genomic DNA Mini Kit protocol from Pure Genomic. The full procedure can be completed in two hours. The new genomic DNA extraction protocol provided good quality and quantity of fungal DNA, from fungal mycelium, with an average yield of 27 ng/µL of DNA per sample. Purified DNA samples yielded 25 ng of DNA ready for sequencing. PCR amplifications of the DNA extracted using the new method were more successful than those extracted using the CTAB method. Thus this new extraction protocol is demonstrated to be an effective method for the identification of a wide range of filamentous fungal species that affect the integrity of buildings with earthen architecture. The roads we travel daily are exposed to several energy sources (mechanical load, solar radiation, heat, air movement, etc.), which can be exploited to make common systems and apparatus for roadways (i.e., lighting, video surveillance, and traffic monitoring systems) energetically autonomous. For decades, research groups have developed many technologies able to scavenge energy from the said sources related to roadways: electromagnetism, piezoelectric and triboelectric harvesters for the cars' stress and vibrations, photovoltaic modules for sunlight, thermoelectric solutions and pyroelectric materials for heat and wind turbines optimized for low-speed winds, such as the ones produced by moving vehicles. Thus, this paper explores the existing technologies for scavenging energy from sources available on roadways, both natural and related to vehicular transit. At first, to contextualize them within the application scenario, the available energy sources and transduction mechanisms were identified and described, arguing the main requirements that must be considered for developing harvesters applicable on roadways. Afterward, an overview of energy harvesting solutions presented in the scientific literature to recover energy from roadways is introduced, classifying them according to the transduction method (i.e., piezoelectric, triboelectric, electromagnetic, photovoltaic, etc.) and proposed system architecture. Later, a survey of commercial systems available on the market for scavenging energy from roadways is introduced, focusing on their architecture, performance, and installation methods. Lastly, comparative analyses are offered for each device category (i.e., scientific works and commercial products), providing insights to identify the most promising solutions and technologies for developing future self-sustainable smart roads. Esketamine, the S-enantiomer of ketamine, has been recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first, and then by European Medicines Agency (EMA), as a new antidepressant agent for major depressive disorder (MDD) resistant to treatment (TRD), and for moderate-to-severe MDD episodes constituting a psychiatric emergency, referring to suicide thoughts. On the other hand, supporting data about the use of ESK-NS in patients affected by comorbid personality disorders is still missing, while there is some evidence about patients with a substance use disorder. Efficacy of esketamine nasal spray plus oral antidepressant treatment for relapse prevention in patients with treatment-resistant depression. After undergoing ESK-NS treatment, this patient showed excellent tolerability and a decrease in depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts, presenting an overall clinical and functioning improvement. Water is one of the most important compounds on Earth, yet its material properties are still poorly understood. Here, we use a recently developed two-state, two-(time)scale (TS2) dynamic mean-field model combined with the two-state Sanchez–Lacombe (SL) thermodynamic theory in order to describe the equation of state (density as a function of temperature and pressure) and diffusivity of liquid water. In particular, it is shown that in a relatively wide temperature and pressure range (160 K < T < 360 K; 0 < P < 100 MPa), density and self-diffusion obey a special type of dynamic scaling, similar to the "τTV" scaling of Casalini and Roland, but with the negative exponent γ. The model predictions are consistent with experimental data. The new equation of state can be used for various process models and generalized to include multicomponent mixtures. Learning to recognize and respond to potential threats is crucial for survival. Pavlovian threat conditioning represents a key paradigm for investigating the neurobiological mechanisms of fear learning. In this review, we address the role of specific neuropharmacological adjuvants that act on neurochemical synaptic transmission, as well as on brain plasticity processes implicated in fear memory. We focus on novel neuropharmacological manipulations targeting glutamatergic, noradrenergic, and endocannabinoid systems, and address how the modulation of these neurobiological systems affects fear extinction learning in humans. We show that the administration of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) agonists and modulation of the endocannabinoid system by fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibition can boost extinction learning through the stabilization and regulation of the receptor concentration. On the other hand, elevated noradrenaline levels dynamically modulate fear learning, hindering long-term extinction processes. Performance diagnosis of Standardbred racehorses needs to be improved. It was examined whether parameters derived of the blood plasma cortisol concentration (CORT) during a standardized exercise test (SET) used to determine the endurance parameter v4 (velocity run under defined conditions inducing 4mmol/L blood lactate concentration) provided additional information for performance diagnosis of two-, three-, and four-year-old Standardbred horses during a racing season. The CORT parameters were CORTstart (CORT after warm-up but before starting), CORTmax (maximal CORT) and CORTmax–min (difference between the CORTmax and CORTmin). The v4 of the horses was related to all CORT derived parameters and the effect of testing in April, June and August on the CORT derived parameters was examined for all age-groups. The date of testing did not influence CORT derived parameters in any age group (P>0.05 all). CORTmax−min of the four-year-old horses was the only CORT derived parameter showing a significant relationship with v4 (P=0.048; r2 = −0.27). None of the CORT derived parameters was different among age-groups. In conclusion, further studies need to be done to clarify whether the CORT parameters defined are useful for performance or poor performance diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
