This work presents a novel type of actuator that improves over the standard cantilever by permitting daisy-chaining while minimising stress to the joint connecting to the load. A detailed structural and functional comparison of the proposed device against the cantilever actuator as a baseline is given, led by a brief revision of the cantilever actuator as the state-of-the-art that highlights its limitations with respect to daisy-chaining and the stress it inherently creates within the joint connecting to the load when attempting out-of-plane displacement without rotation. Simulations of both devices' performance confirm that the newly proposed device yields the targeted displacement profile that both enables the daisy-chaining of such a device into a higher-order actuator for increased displacement and reduce stress in the joint with the load. This comes at the cost of reduced maximum displacement compared to the cantilever, which can be overcome by daisy-chaining. The proposed device's performance is further evaluated on the basis of manufactured prototypes measured by means of a laser scanning vibrometer. The prototype was manufactured on a 150 μm alumina substrate, and both electrodes and piezoelectric layer were deposited in a thick-film printing process.

Excessive noise in hospitals adversely affects patients' sleep and recovery, causes stress and fatigue in staff and hampers communication. The World Health Organization suggests sound levels should be limited to 35 decibels. This is probably unachievable in intensive care units, but some reduction from current levels should be possible. A preliminary step would be to identify principal sources of noise. As part of a larger project investigating techniques to reduce environmental noise, we installed a microphone array system in one with four beds in an adult general intensive care unit. This continuously measured locations and sound pressure levels of noise sources. This report summarises results recorded over one year. Data were collected between 7 April 2017 and 16 April 2018 inclusive. Data for a whole day were available for 248 days. The sound location system revealed that the majority of loud sounds originated from extremely limited areas, very close to patients' ears. This proximity maximises the adverse effects of high environmental noise levels for patients. Some of this was likely to be appropriate communication between the patient, their caring staff and visitors. However, a significant proportion of loud sounds may originate from equipment alarms which are sited at the bedside. A redesign of the intensive care unit environment to move alarm sounds away from the bed-side might significantly reduce the environmental noise burden to patients., (© 2019 The Authors. An approach is described to apply spatial filtering with microphone arrays to localize acoustic sources in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This is done to obtain more detailed information about disturbing noise sources in the ICU with the ultimate goal of facilitating the reduction of the overall background noise level, which could potentially improve the patients' experience and reduce the time needed for recovery. This paper gives a practical description of the system, including the audio hardware setup as well as the design choices for the microphone arrays. Additionally, the necessary signal processing steps required to produce meaningful data are explained, focusing on a novel clustering approach that enables an automatic evaluation of the spatial filtering results. This approach allows the data to be presented to the nursing staff in a way that enables them to act on the results produced by the system.

In this work an expression for the solution of the Helmholtz equation for wedge spaces is derived. Such propagation spaces represent scenarios for many acoustical problems where a free field assumption is not eligible. The proposed sound field model is derived from the general solution of the wave equation in cylindrical coordinates, using sets of orthonormal basis functions. The latter are modified to satisfy several boundary conditions representing the reflective behaviour of wedge-shaped propagation spaces. This formulation is then used in the context of nearfield acoustical holography (NAH) and to obtain the expression of the Neumann Green function. The model and its suitability for NAH is demonstrated through both numerical simulations and measured data, where the latter was acquired for the specific case of a loudspeaker on a hemi-cylindrical rigid baffle.

Multi-zone sound control aims to reproduce multiple sound fields independently and simultaneously over different spatial regions within the same space. This paper investigates the multi-zone sound control problem formulated in the modal domain using the Lagrange cost function and provides a modal-domain analysis of the problem. The Lagrange cost function is formulated to represent a quadratic objective of reproducing a desired sound field within the bright zone and with constraints on sound energy in the dark zone and global region. A fundamental problem in multi-zone reproduction is interzone sound interference, where based on the geometry of the sound zones and the desired sound field within the bright zone the achievable reproduction performance is limited. The modal-domain Lagrangian solution demonstrates the intrinsic ill-posedness of the problem, based on which a parameter, the coefficient of realisability, is developed to evaluate the reproduction limitation. The proposed reproduction method is based on controlling the interference between sound zones and sound leakage outside the sound zones, resulting in a suitable compromise between good bright zone performance and satisfactory dark zone performance. The performance of the proposed design is demonstrated through numerical simulations of two-zone reproduction in free-field and in reverberant environments.

A method is presented for generating a sound field that is significantly attenuated over half of the reproduction region, which has application to the generation of two independent sound fields for two listeners. The half-space sound field is produced by attenuating the negative or positive modes in the cylindrical or spherical expansion of a plane wave or point source sound field. It is shown that this is equivalent to adding to the original sound field, in quadrature, a second field which is the Hilbert transform of the original field. The resulting analytic field has a small magnitude in one half of the plane. Methods are presented for controlling the attenuation in the unwanted half-space. Finally, a simulation is presented showing the generation of a wideband pulse that propagates across half of the area within a circular array of sources.

An application of current interest in sound reproduction systems is the creation of multizone sound fields which produce multiple independent sound fields for multiple listeners. The challenge in producing such sound fields is the avoidance of interference between sound zones, which is dependent on the geometry of the zone and the direction of arrival of the desired sound fields. This paper provides a theoretical basis for the generation of two zones based on the creation of sound fields with nulls and the positioning of those nulls at arbitrary positions. The nulls are created by suppressing low-order mode terms in the sound field expansion. Simulations are presented for the two-dimensional case which shows that suppression of interference is possible across a broad frequency audio range.

Given a continuous distribution of acoustic sources, the determination of the source strength that ensures the synthesis of a desired sound field is shown to be identical to the solution of an equivalent acoustic scattering problem. The paper begins with the presentation of the general theory that underpins sound field reproduction with secondary sources continuously arranged on the boundary of the reproduction region. The process of reproduction by a continuous source distribution is modeled by means of an integral operator (the single layer potential). It is then shown how the solution of the sound reproduction problem corresponds to that of an equivalent scattering problem. Analytical solutions are computed for two specific instances of this problem, involving, respectively, the use of a secondary source distribution in spherical and planar geometries. The results are shown to be the same as those obtained with analyses based on High Order Ambisonics and Wave Field Synthesis, respectively, thus bringing to light a fundamental analogy between these two methods of sound reproduction. Finally, it is shown how the physical optics (Kirchhoff) approximation enables the derivation of a high-frequency simplification for the problem under consideration, this in turn being related to the secondary source selection criterion reported in the literature on Wave Field Synthesis.

Sound reproduction systems using omnidirectional loudspeakers produce reflections from room surfaces which interfere with the desired sound field within the array. While active compensation systems can reduce the reverberant level, they require calibration in each room and are processor-intensive. Directional loudspeakers allow the direct to reverberant level to be improved within the array, but still produce a finite exterior field which reflects from the room surfaces. The use of variable-directivity loudspeakers allows the exterior field to be eliminated at low frequencies by implementing the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral equation. This paper investigates the performance of variable-directivity arrays in reducing reverberant levels and compares the results with those derived in a previous paper for fixed-directivity arrays. There has recently been an increasing interest in the generation of a sound field that is audible in one spatial region and inaudible in an adjacent region. The method proposed here ensures the control of the amplitude and phase of multiple acoustic sources in order to maximize the acoustic energy difference between two adjacent regions while also ensuring that evenly distributed source strengths are used. The performance of the method proposed is evaluated by computer simulations and experiments with real loudspeaker arrays in the shape of a circle and a sphere. The proposed method gives an improvement in the efficiency of radiation into the space in which the sound should be audible, while maintaining the acoustic pressure difference between two acoustic spaces. This is shown to give an improvement of performance compared to the contrast control method previously proposed.

Sound reproduction systems using open arrays of loudspeakers in rooms suffer from degradations due to room reflections. These reflections can be reduced using pre-compensation of the loudspeaker signals, but this requires calibration of the array in the room, and is processor-intensive. This paper examines 3D sound reproduction systems using spherical arrays of fixed-directivity loudspeakers which reduce the sound field radiated outside the array. A generalized form of the simple source formulation and a mode-matching solution are derived for the required loudspeaker weights. The exterior field is derived and expressions for the exterior power and direct to reverberant ratio are derived. The theoretical results and simulations confirm that minimum interference occurs for loudspeakers which have hyper-cardioid polar responses.
