Coalescing supermassive black hole binaries (BHBs) are expected to be the loudest sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the Universe. Detection rates for ground or space-based detectors based on cosmological simulations and semi-analytic models are highly uncertain. A major difficulty stems from the necessity to model the BHB from the scale of the merger to that of inspiral. Of particular relevance to the GW merger timescale is the binary eccentricity. Here we present a self-consistent numerical study of the eccentricity of BHBs formed in massive gas-free mergers from the early stages of the merger to the hardening phase, followed by a semi-analytical model down to coalescence. We find that the early eccentricity of the unbound black hole pair is largely determined by the initial orbit. It systematically decreases during the dynamical friction phase. The eccentricity at binary formation is affected by stochasticity and noise owing to encounters with stars, but preserves a strong correlation with the initial orbital eccentricity. Binding of the black holes is a phase characterised by strong perturbations, and we present a quantitative definition of the time of binary formation. During hardening the eccentricity increases in minor mergers, unless the binary is approximately circular, but remains largely unchanged in major mergers, in agreement with predictions from semi-analytical models based on isotropic scattering experiments. We propose a space-based interferometer surveying the gravitational wave (GW) sky in the milli-Hz to $\mu$-Hz frequency range. By the 2040s', the $\mu$-Hz frequency band, bracketed in between the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and pulsar timing arrays, will constitute the largest gap in the coverage of the astrophysically relevant GW spectrum. Yet many outstanding questions related to astrophysics and cosmology are best answered by GW observations in this band. We show that a $\mu$-Hz GW detector will be a truly overarching observatory for the scientific community at large, greatly extending the potential of LISA. Gravitational waves emitted by merging black holes between $\sim 10^4-10^7~M_\odot$ will be detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) with signal-to-noise ratios of several hundred out to redshift 20. Supermassive black hole ($10^7$~M$_{\odot}$ - $10^{10}$~M$_{\odot}$) binary formation, coalescence and merger within massive galaxies is well-studied. However, low-to-intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) are hosted by low-mass and dwarf galaxies; it is not trivial to extrapolate black hole merger timescales to this IMBH binary regime, due to the starkly different host galaxy structure, kinematics, and morphology compared to massive galaxy hosts. We perform ultra-high resolution $N$-body simulations to study IMBH dynamics in nucleated dwarf galaxies whose structural parameters are obtained from observations of nearby dwarf galaxies. Starting from 50 parsecs, an IMBH quickly forms a binary. Thereafter, the binary orbit shrinks rapidly due to the high central stellar densities furnished by nuclear star clusters (NSCs). We find high eccentricities ($e \sim 0.4-0.99$) in our suite of IMBH binaries, and residual eccentricity may persist to the LISA regime. IMBH merger times are typically a few hundred million years, with a few exceptionally short merger times for high eccentricities. We find that IMBH-stellar encounters originate predominantly from NSCs, if the NSC-to-IMBH binary mass ratio is greater than 10; otherwise, bulge stars contribute significantly. As the IMBH binary ejects stars, however, the NSCs is disrupted. We conclude that comparable-mass IMBHs merge very efficiently in nucleated dwarf galaxies, making them promising LISA sources, as well as a channel for IMBH growth., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries residing at the core of merging galaxies are recently found to be strongly affected by the rotation of their host galaxies. The highly eccentric orbits that form when the host is counterrotating emit strong bursts of gravitational waves that propel rapid SMBH binary coalescence. Most prior work, however, focused on planar orbits and a uniform rotation profile, an unlikely interaction configuration. However, the coupling between rotation and SMBH binary evolution appears to be such a strong dynamical process that it warrants further investigation. This study uses direct N-body simulations to isolate the effect of galaxy rotation in more realistic interactions. In particular, we systematically vary the SMBH orbital plane with respect to the galaxy rotation axis, the radial extent of the rotating component, and the initial eccentricity of the SMBH binary orbit. We find that the initial orbital plane orientation and eccentricity alone can change the inspiral time by an order of magnitude. Because SMBH binary inspiral and merger is such a loud gravitational wave source, these studies are critical for the future gravitational wave detector, LISA, an ESA/NASA mission currently set to launch by 2034., 9 pages, 9 figures and 3 tables. Understanding how supermassive black holes (SMBHs) pair and merge helps to inform predictions of off-center, dual, and binary AGN, and provides key insights into how SMBHs grow and co-evolve with their galaxy hosts. As the loudest known gravitational wave source, binary SMBH mergers also hold centerstage for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a joint ESA/NASA gravitational wave observatory set to launch in 2034. Here, we continue our work to characterize SMBH binary formation and evolution through increasingly more realistic high resolution direct $N$-body simulations, focusing on the effect of SMBH mass ratio, orientation, and eccentricity within a rotating and flattened stellar host. During the dynamical friction phase, we found a prolonged orbital decay for retrograde SMBHs and swift pairing timescales for prograde SMBHs compared to their counterparts in non-rotating models, an effect that becomes more pronounced for smaller mass ratios $M_{\rm sec}/M_{\rm prim} = q$. During this pairing phase, the eccentricity dramatically increases for retrograde configurations, but as the binary forms, the orbital plane flips so that it is almost perfectly prograde, which stifles the rapid eccentricity growth. In prograde configurations, SMBH binaries form and remain at comparatively low eccentricities. As in our prior work, we note that the center of mass of a prograde SMBH binary itself settles into an orbit about the center of the galaxy. Since even the initially retrograde binaries flip their orbital plane, we expect few binaries in rotating systems to reside at rest in the dynamic center of the host galaxy, though this effect is smaller as $q$ decreases., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect gravitational-wave (GW) signals from merging supermassive black holes (BHs) with masses below $10^7$~M$_{\odot}$. It is thus of paramount importance to understand the orbital dynamics of these relatively light central BHs, which typically reside in disc-dominated galaxies, in order to produce reliable forecasts of merger rates. To this aim, realistic simulations probing BH dynamics in unequal-mass disc galaxy mergers, into and beyond the binary hardening stage, are performed by combining smooth particle hydrodynamics and direct $N$-body codes. The structural properties and orbits of the galaxies are chosen to be consistent with the results of galaxy formation simulations. Stellar and dark matter distributions are triaxial down to the central 100 pc of merger remnant. In all cases, a BH binary forms and hardens on time-scales of at most 100~Myr, coalescing on another few hundred Myr time-scale, depending on the characteristic density and orbital eccentricity. Overall, the sinking of the BH binary takes no more than $\sim$0.5~Gyr after the merger of the two galaxies is completed, but can be much faster for very plunging orbits. Comparing with previous numerical simulations following the decay of BHs in massive early-type galaxies at $z \sim 3$, we confirm that the characteristic density is the most crucial parameter determining the overall BH merging time-scale, despite the structural diversity of the host galaxies. The evolution of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) initially embedded in the centres of merging galaxies realised with a stellar mass function (SMF) is studied from the onset of galaxy mergers till coalescence. We performed a large set of direct N-body simulations with three different slopes of the central stellar cusp and different random seeds. Post Newtonian terms up to order 3.5 are used to drive the SMBH binary evolution in the relativistic regime. The impact of a SMF on the hardening rate and the coalescence time is investigated. We find that SMBH binaries coalesce well within one billion years when our models are scaled to galaxies with a steep cusp at low redshift. Here higher central densities provide larger supply of stars to efficiently extract energy from the SMBH binary orbit and shrink it to the phase where gravitational wave (GW) emission becomes dominant leading to the coalescence of the SMBHs. Mergers of models with shallow cusps that are representative for giant elliptical galaxies having central cores result in less efficient extraction of binary orbital energy due to the lower stellar densities in the centre. However, high values of eccentricity witnessed for SMBH binaries in such galaxy mergers ensure that the GW emission dominated phase sets in earlier at larger values of the semi-major axis. This helps to compensate for the less efficient energy extraction during the phase dominated by stellar encounters resulting in mergers of SMBHs in about one Gyr after the formation of the binary. Additionally, we witness mass segregation in the merger remnant resulting in enhanced SMBH binary hardening rates. The N-independence observed in the evolution of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) in recent simulation of merging stellar bulges suggests a simple interpretation beyond complex time-dependent relaxation processes. We conjecture that the MBHB hardening rate is equivalent to that of a binary immersed in a field of unbound stars with density $\rho$ and typical velocity $\sigma$, provided that $\rho$ and $\sigma$ are the stellar density and the velocity dispersion at the influence radius of the MBHB. By comparing direct N-body simulations to an hybrid model based on 3-body scattering experiments, we verify this hypothesis: when normalized to the stellar density and velocity dispersion at the binary influence radius, the N-body MBHB hardening rate approximately matches that predicted by 3-body scatterings in the investigated cases. The eccentricity evolution obtained with the two techniques is also in reasonable agreement. This result is particularly practical because it allows to estimate the lifetime of MBHBs forming in dry mergers based solely on the stellar density profile of the host galaxy. The damped and sub-damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs and sub-DLAs) traced in absorption against bright background quasars represent the main reserve of neutral hydrogen at high redshifts. We used the archival Very Large Telescope (VLT) instrument Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) high-resolution data of Q0338-0005 (zem = 3.049) to study abundances of the DLA (zabs = 2.2298) and sub-DLA (zabs =2.7457) along the line of sight. We estimated column densities of HI and various elements present in the DLA and sub-DLA through Voigt profile fitting. The DLA trough shows the Lyman alpha emission from its host galaxy. We derive the metallicities of the DLA and sub-DLA with [Zn/H] = -0.67 +/- 0.18 and [S/H] = -1.45 +/-0.17, respectively. We compared our abundances of the DLA and sub-DLA with other high resolution DLA and sub-DLA metallicities and find that both populations show an overall increase of metallicity with decreasing redshift. The Tarleton Observatory’s 0.8m telescope and CCD photometer were used to obtain 1298 observations of the short period eclipsing binary star MW And. The observations were obtained in Johnson’s BVR filters. The light curves show that MW And is an eclipsing binary star with a period of 0.26376886 days. Further analysis showed that the period of MW And is changing at the rate of 0.17 sec / y e a r . The photometric solutions were obtained using the 2015 version of the Wilson-Devinney model. The solutions show that MW And is an eclipsing binary star of W UMa type. Our analysis suggests that the system has a light curve of W-subtype contact system. Its spectral type of K0/K1, as estimated from its color, places it in the Zero-Age contact zone of the period-spectral type diagram. Luminosity from the solutions indicates that it is a double-line spectroscopic system and therefore, spectroscopic observations are recommended for further detail study.

It has been well-established that particular centrophilic orbital families in non-spherical galaxies can, in principle, drive a black hole binary to shrink its orbit through three-body scattering until the black holes are close enough to strongly emit gravitational waves. Most of these studies rely on orbital analysis of a static SMBH-embedded galaxy potential to support this view; it is not clear, however, how these orbits transform as the second SMBH enters the center, so our understanding of which orbits actually interact with a SMBH binary is not ironclad. Here, we analyze two flattened galaxy models, one with a single SMBH and one with a binary, to determine which orbits actually do interact with the SMBH binary and how they compare with the set predicted in single SMBH-embedded models. We find close correspondence between the centrophilic orbits predicted to interact with the binary and those that are actually scattered by the binary, in terms of energy and Lz distribution, where Lz is the z component of a stellar particle's angular momentum. Of minor note: because of the larger mass, the binary SMBH has a radius of influence about 4 times larger than in the single SMBH model, which allows the binary to draw from a larger reservoir of orbits to scatter. Of the prediction particles and scattered particles, nearly half have chaotic orbits, 40% have fx:fy=1:1 orbits, 10% have other resonant orbits.

Dynamical friction leads to an orbital decay of massive objects like young compact star clusters or Massive Black Holes in central regions of galaxies. The dynamical friction force can be well approximated by Chandrasekhar's standard formula, but recent investigations show, that corrections to the Coulomb logarithm are necessary. With a large set of N-body simulations we show that the improved formula for the Coulomb logarithm fits the orbital decay very well for circular and eccentric orbits. The local scale-length of the background density distribution serves as the maximum impact parameter for a wide range of power-law indices of -1 ... -5. For each type of code the numerical resolution must be compared to the effective minimum impact parameter in order to determine the Coulomb logarithm. We also quantify the correction factors by using self-consistent velocity distribution functions instead of the standard Maxwellian often used. These factors enter directly the decay timescale and cover a range of 0.5 ... 3 for typical orbits. The new Coulomb logarithm combined with self-consistent velocity distribution functions in the Chandrasekhar formula provides a significant improvement of orbital decay times with correction up to one order of magnitude compared to the standard case. We suggest the general use of the improved formula in parameter studies as well as in special applications.

Although supermassive black holes (SMBHs) correlate well with their host galaxies, there is an emerging view that outliers exist. Henize 2-10, NGC 4889, and NGC1277 are examples of SMBHs at least an order of magnitude more massive than their host galaxy suggests. The dynamical effects of such ultramassive central black holes is unclear. Here, we perform direct N-body simulations of mergers of galactic nuclei where one black hole is ultramassive to study the evolution of the remnant and the black hole dynamics in this extreme regime. We find that the merger remnant is axisymmetric near the center, while near the large SMBH influence radius, the galaxy is triaxial. The SMBH separation shrinks rapidly due to dynamical friction, and quickly forms a binary black hole; if we scale our model to the most massive estimate for the NGC1277 black hole, for example, the timescale for the SMBH separation to shrink from nearly a kiloparsec to less than a parsec is roughly 10 Myr. By the time the SMBHs form a hard binary, gravitational wave emission dominates, and the black holes coalesce in a mere few Myr. Curiously, these extremely massive binaries appear to nearly bypass the 3-body scattering evolutionary phase. Our study suggests that in this extreme case, SMBH coalescence is governed by dynamical friction followed nearly directly by gravitational wave emission, resulting in an rapid and efficient SMBH coalescence timescale. During a galaxy merger, the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in each galaxy is thought to sink to the center of the potential and form a supermassive black hole binary; this binary can eject stars via 3-body scattering, bringing the SMBHs ever closer. In a static spherical galaxy model, the binary stalls at a separation of about a parsec after ejecting all the stars in its loss cone -- this is the well-known final parsec problem. Earlier work has shown that the centrophilic orbits in triaxial galaxy models are key in refilling the loss cone at a high enough rate to prevent the black holes from stalling. However, the evolution of binary SMBHs has never been explored in axisymmetric galaxies, so it is not clear if the final parsec problem persists in these systems. Here we use a suite of direct N-body simulations to follow SMBH binary evolution in galaxy models with a range of ellipticity. For the first time, we show that mere axisymmetry can solve the final parsec problem; we find the the SMBH evolution is independent of N for an axis ratio of c/a=0.8, and that the SMBH binary separation reaches the gravitational radiation regime for c/a=0.75., Comment: 5 pages, submitted to ApJ Letters. We model for the first time the complete orbital evolution of a pair of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) in a 1:10 galaxy merger of two disk dominated gas-rich galaxies, from the stage prior to the formation of the binary up to the onset of gravitational wave emission when the binary separation has shrunk to 1 milli parsec. The high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations used for the first phase of the evolution include star formation, accretion onto the SMBHs as well as feedback from supernovae explosions and radiative heating from the SMBHs themselves. Using the direct N-body code \phi-GPU we evolve the system further without including the effect of gas, which has been mostly consumed by star formation in the meantime. We start at the time when the separation between two SMBHs is ~ 700 pc and the two black holes are still embedded in their galaxy cusps. We use 3 million particles to study the formation and evolution of the SMBH binary till it becomes hard. After a hard binary is formed, we reduce (reselect) the particles to 1.15 million and follow the subsequent shrinking of the SMBH binary due to 3-body encounters with the stars. We find approximately constant hardening rates and that the SMBH binary rapidly develops a high eccentricity. Similar hardening rates and eccentricity values are reported in earlier studies of SMBH binary evolution in the merging of dissipation-less spherical galaxy models. The estimated coalescence time is ~ 2.9 Gyr, significantly smaller than a Hubble time. We discuss why this timescale should be regarded as an upper limit. Since 1:10 mergers are among the most common interaction events for galaxies at all cosmic epochs, we argue that several SMBH binaries should be detected with currently planned space-borne gravitational wave interferometers, whose sensitivity will be especially high for SMBHs in the mass range considered here., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJ

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are ubiquitous in galaxies with a sizable mass. It is expected that a pair of SMBHs originally in the nuclei of two merging galaxies would form a binary and eventually coalesce via a burst of gravitational waves. So far theoretical models and simulations have been unable to predict directly the SMBH merger timescale from ab-initio galaxy formation theory, focusing only on limited phases of the orbital decay of SMBHs under idealized conditions of the galaxy hosts. The predicted SMBH merger timescales are long, of order Gyrs, which could be problematic for future gravitational wave searches. Here we present the first multi-scale $\Lambda$CDM cosmological simulation that follows the orbital decay of a pair of SMBHs in a merger of two typical massive galaxies at $z\sim3$, all the way to the final coalescence driven by gravitational wave emission. The two SMBHs, with masses $\sim10^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$, settle quickly in the nucleus of the merger remnant. The remnant is triaxial and extremely dense due to the dissipative nature of the merger and the intrinsic compactness of galaxies at high redshift. Such properties naturally allow a very efficient hardening of the SMBH binary. Galaxy centers are residing places for Super Massive Black Holes (SMBHs). Galaxy mergers bring SMBHs close together to form gravitationally bound binary systems which, if able to coalesce in less than a Hubble time, would be one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). In spherical galaxy models, SMBH binaries stall at a separation of approximately one parsec, leading to the "final parsec problem" (FPP). On the other hand, it has been shown that merger-induced triaxiality of the remnant in equal-mass mergers is capable of supporting a constant supply of stars on so-called centrophilic orbits that interact with the binary and thus avoid the FPP. In this paper, using a set of direct N-body simulations of mergers of initially spherically symmetric galaxies with different mass ratios, we show that the merger-induced triaxiality is able to drive unequal-mass SMBH binaries to coalescence. The binary hardening rates are high and depend only weakly on the mass ratios of SMBHs for a wide range of mass ratios q. The hardening rates are significantly higher for galaxies having steep cusps in comparison with those having shallow cups at centers. The evolution of the binary SMBH leads to relatively shallower inner slopes at the centers of the merger remnants. The stellar mass displaced by the SMBH binary on its way to coalescence is ~ 1-5 times the combined mass of binary SMBHs. The coalescence times for SMBH binary with mass ~ million solar masses are less than 1 Gyr and for those at the upper end of SMBH masses (~ billion solar masses) are 1-2 Gyr for less eccentric binaries whereas less than 1 Gyr for highly eccentric binaries. In spherical galaxies, binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs) have difficulty reaching sub-parsec separations due to depletion of stars on orbits that intersect the massive binary - the final-parsec problem. Galaxies that form via major mergers are substantially nonspherical, and it has been argued that the centrophilic orbits in triaxial galaxies might provide stars to the massive binary at a high enough rate to avoid stalling. Here we test that idea by carrying out fully self-consistent merger simulations of galaxies containing central SMBHs. We find hardening rates of the massive binaries that are indeed much higher than in spherical models, and essentially independent of the number of particles used in the simulations. Binary eccentricities remain high throughout the simulations. Our results constitute a fully stellar-dynamical solution to the final-parsec problem and imply a potentially high rate of events for low-frequency gravitational wave detectors like LISA., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures. If able to coalesce in a Hubble time, Supermassive Black hole (SMBH) binaries are very promising sources of gravitational waves (GW). Our earlier studies have shown that SMBH binaries coalesce in post-merger galactic nuclei having triaxial or axisymmetric geometry in a few billion years. In this study, we model the complete evolution of SMBH binaries formed as a result of galaxy mergers having central density profiles that vary from shallow to very steep including a stellar mass function. Energy and angular momentum loss due to GW emission is taken into account using the post-Newtonian approximation. We carry out ten such simulations for each central density profile. The eccentricity of the SMBH binaries remain very high in shallow cusps and decrease systematically for steeper cusps. The coalescence times range from 0.6 to 1.5 Gyr with shorter times for steeper profiles. Typical coalescence times less than a Gyr strengthen our expectation that SMBH binaries should be very promising sources of GW radiation over a wide redshift range.
