3. Movement patterns of Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii) and golden perch (Macquaria ambigua) in a northern Murray–Darling Basin dryland river.

Abstract

Context: Dryland rivers are unique ecosystems, where drought and flood play an important role in shaping the ecosystem. River regulation has altered the natural flow regime in many of these systems, affecting migration cues and connectivity for many species. Aims: To quantify the discharge-related movements of Murray cod and golden perch within the Condamine–Balonne River subject to differing levels of river regulation. Methods: We quantified flow regime variability, river regulation and fish movement to develop generalised additive mixed models to predict movement probability for Murray cod and golden perch. Results: Both species showed strong positive relationships between discharge and movement. Murray cod did not show any association with river regulation; however, medium-sized individuals were significantly more likely to move than were smaller or larger fish. Golden perch movements varied among levels of regulation, were more likely to move as body weight increased and showed seasonality of movement, moving less during winter. Conclusions: This study presents the largely unobserved movement behaviours of fish across a gradient of river regulation and environmental conditions in the northern Murray–Darling Basin. Implications: This information is valuable for informing policy and management decisions that may affect species' life-history requirements in analogous river systems. Quantifying flow-related movements of Murray cod and golden perch subject to differing levels of flow regulation is important for water management decision-making. Our study observed that movement patterns for either species were driven by combinations of discharge, river regulation, season, and body size. Tailored management strategies for these fish species should be developed on the basis of location, river regulation and flow regime. 11. Sentient computing : a universal framework for spatial data

Abstract

Spatial datasets are an important source of context for computer applications in Sentient Computing. However, heterogeneous sensor networks present location and orientation telemetry in differing formats, with incompatible interpretation semantics, and subject to contrasting measurement and quantisation errors. Applications consume data in another set of frames of reference and are generally confined to operating in rooms and office spaces that are sensed by a single, homogeneous suite of sensors under the same ownership and administrative control. This thesis presents Scalable, Distributed Spatial Indexing (SDSI), a unifying framework designed to capture the semantics of sensor technologies and autonomously transform, re-write, and otherwise massage data so as to interface to application-level software and decouple applications and sensor hardwares to support seamless mobility. Translation Functions perform the mathematical operations necessary to convert raw sensor data to other formats. The SDSI framework ensures the preservation of the mathematical and scientific rigour associated with the interpretation of each telemetry data stream. Uncertainties and errors are also converted by Translation Functions and allow client applications to determine the accuracy and precision suitability of any sensor data for individual purposes. SDSI builds on long-standing database theory to provide security and privacy controls, allowing users to restrict access to sensitive data streams without requiring multiple, isolated data handling systems. Caching techniques are used to maintain processing throughput and network distribution provides scalable, inter-site communication through the global Internet. The evaluation includes a substantial investigation of Driveable Computing—the scope for Sentient Computing in private motor vehicles—in which spatial frames of reference are required to interpret cartographic data, interact with human occupants using natural language, interface with positioning hardware, and so forth. The conclusion, that the proposed framework is suitable and applicable to Sentient Computing, is extremely positive and poses several avenues and opportunities for continued research in the field.

14. Retrospective spatial analysis of cases of COVID-19 in a single military accommodation block corridor, RMAS, January–March 21

Abstract

Shared ablutions and stairwells, corridor cross-ventilation and non-deliberate perflation (natural draft blowing through a space) are potential risk factors for COVID-19 transmission in corridor-based accommodation. This paper uses retrospective spatial analysis to identify potential built environmental risk factors during the January–March 2021 outbreak in Victory College, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.Distance was measured in units of single room spacing. Odds, ORs and 95% CIs were calculated to identify and measure associations between distance from exposure and having COVID-19. Distance response trends were assessed using Pearson’s χ2for trend test. Linear relationships were tested using the t-test or rank-sum test.Stairwells and ablutions were not identified as likely sources of infection for all corridor occupants. Assuming occupants used their nearest ablutions, closer distance among those attributed to using ablutions 2 (one of four sets of ablutions), was identified as a risk factor (p=0.05). Testing distance response by χ2linear trend testing showed a potential association between nearest adjacent positive room and COVID-19 (p=0.06), strongest if dominant air movement along the corridor length was from the left (p=0.10) compared with the right (p=0.24).Formal qualitative spatial analysis and environmental assessment of ventilation and air movement has a role in outbreak investigation in assessing factors related to the built environment. Environmental investigations would best inform outbreak investigations if undertaken contemporaneously. Pre-emptive and retrospective studies can help inform public health advice to military establishments in business continuity planning for isolation facilities, during outbreaks or in future development of the built environment.
