The large-scale linear halo bias encodes the relation between the clustering of dark-matter (DM) halos and that of the underlying matter density field. Although the primary dependence of bias on halo mass is well understood in the context of structure formation, the physical origins of the multiple additional relations at fixed halo mass, commonly known as secondary halo bias, have not been fully elucidated. Of particular relevance is the secondary dependence on halo assembly history, known as halo assembly bias. Our goal is to determine whether the properties of the initial regions from which $z=0$ halos originate produce any secondary bias at $z=0$. By analyzing these initial dependencies in connection with halo assembly bias, we intend to provide insight on the physical origins of the effect. To this end, we select halos at $z=0$ in the IllustrisTNG DM-only simulation and trace back the positions and velocities of their DM particles to $z=12$. The resulting initial regions are characterized according to several shape-related and kinematic properties. The secondary bias signal produced by these properties at $z=0$ is measured using an object-by-object bias estimator, which offers significant analytical advantages. We show that, when split by the properties of their initial DM clouds, $z=0$ halos display significant secondary bias, clearly exceeding the amplitude of the well-known halo assembly bias signal produced by concentration and age. The maximum bias segregation is measured for cloud velocity dispersion and radial velocity, followed by cloud concentration, sphericity, ellipticity and triaxiality. We further show that both velocity dispersion and radial velocity are also the properties of the initial clouds that most strongly correlate with halo age and concentration at fixed halo mass. Accurate modeling of galaxy distributions is paramount for cosmological analysis using galaxy redshift surveys. However, this endeavor is often hindered by the computational complexity of resolving the dark matter halos that host these galaxies. To address this challenge, we propose the development of effective assembly bias models down to small scales, i.e., going beyond the local density dependence capturing non-local cosmic evolution. We introduce a hierarchical cosmic web classification that indirectly captures up to third-order long- and short-range non-local bias terms. This classification system also enables us to maintain positive definite parametric bias expansions. Specifically, we subdivide the traditional cosmic web classification, which is based on the eigenvalues of the tidal field tensor, with an additional classification based on the Hessian matrix of the negative density contrast. We obtain the large-scale dark matter field on a mesh with $\sim3.9\,h^{-1}$ Mpc cell side resolution through Augmented Lagrangian Perturbation Theory. To assess the effectiveness of our model, we conduct tests using a reference halo catalogue extracted from the UNIT project simulation, which was run within a cubical volume of 1 $h^{-1}$ Gpc side. The resulting mock halo catalogs, generated through our approach, exhibit a high level of accuracy in terms of the one-, two- and three-point statistics. They reproduce the reference power-spectrum within better than 2 percent accuracy up to wavenumbers $k\sim0.8\,h$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and provide accurate bispectra within the scales that are crucial for cosmological analysis. Nebular emission lines are powerful diagnostics for the physical processes at play in galaxy formation and evolution. Moreover, emission-line galaxies (ELGs) are one of the main targets of current and forthcoming spectroscopic cosmological surveys. We investigate the contributions to the line luminosity functions (LFs) of different galaxy populations in the local Universe, providing a benchmark for future surveys of earlier cosmic epochs. The large statistics of the observations from the SDSS DR7 Main galaxy sample and the MPA-JHU spectral catalogue enabled us to precisely measure the H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, [OII], [OIII], and, for the first time, the [NII], and [SII] emission-line LFs over ~2.4 Gyrs in the low-z Universe, 0.0210$^{-11}$/yr. When classifying ELGs using the BPT+WHAN diagrams, we find that 63.3 per cent are star forming, only 0.03 are passively evolving, and 1.3 have nuclear activity (Seyfert). The rest are low-ionization narrow emission-line regions (LINERs) and composite ELGs. We found that a Saunders function is the most appropriate to describe all of the emission-line LFs, both observed and dust-extinction-corrected. They are dominated by star-forming regions, except for the bright end of the [OIII] and [NII] LFs (i.e. L[NII]>10$^{42}$ erg/s, L[OIII]>10$^{43}$ erg/s), where the contribution of Seyfert galaxies is not negligible.

Context: Analyzing the large-scale structure (LSS) with galaxy surveys demands accurate structure formation models. Such models should ideally be fast and have a clear theoretical framework to rapidly scan a variety of cosmological parameter spaces without requiring large training data sets. Aims: This study aims to extend Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT), including viscosity and vorticity, to reproduce the cosmic evolution from dark matter N-body calculations at the field level. Methods: We extend LPT to an Eulerian framework, which we dub eALPT. An ultraviolet regularisation through the spherical collapse model provided by Augmented LPT, turns out to be crucial at low redshifts. This iterative method enables modelling of the stress tensor and introduces vorticity. The eALPT model has two free parameters apart from the choice of cosmology, redshift snapshots, cosmic volume, and the number of particles. Results: We find that compared to N-body solvers, the cross-correlation of the dark matter distribution increases at $k = 1\,h$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and $z = 0$ from $\sim$55% with the Zel'dovich approximation ($\sim$70% with ALPT), to $\sim$95% with three timesteps eALPT, and the power spectra show percentage accuracy up to $k \simeq 0.3\,h$ Mpc$^{-1}$., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures (accepted for publication at A&A)

We present a novel approach to the construction of mock galaxy catalogues for large-scale structure analysis based on the distribution of dark matter halos obtained with effective bias models at the field level. We aim to produce mock galaxy catalogues capable of generating accurate covariance matrices for a number of cosmological probes that are expected to be measured in current and forthcoming galaxy redshift surveys (e.g. two- and three-point statistics). We use the bias assignment method (BAM) to model the statistics of halo distribution through a learning algorithm using a few detailed $N$-body simulations, and approximated gravity solvers based on Lagrangian perturbation theory. Using specific models of halo occupation distributions, we generate galaxy mocks with the expected number density and central-satellite fraction of emission-line galaxies, which are a key target of the DESI experiment. BAM generates mock catalogues with per cent accuracy in a number of summary statistics, such as the abundance, the two- and three-point statistics of halo distributions, both in real and redshift space. In particular, the mock galaxy catalogues display $\sim 3\%-10\%$ accuracy in the multipoles of the power spectrum up to scales of $k\sim 0.4\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. We show that covariance matrices of two- and three-point statistics obtained with BAM display a similar structure to the reference simulation. BAM offers an efficient way to produce mock halo catalogues with accurate two- and three-point statistics, and is able to generate a variety of multi-tracer catalogues with precise covariance matrices of several cosmological probes. SubHalo Abundance Matching (SHAM) is an empirical method for constructing galaxy catalogues based on high-resolution $N$-body simulations. We apply SHAM on the UNIT simulation to simulate SDSS BOSS/eBOSS Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) within a wide redshift range of $0.2 < z < 1.0$. Besides the typical SHAM scatter parameter $\sigma$, we include $v_{\rm smear}$ and $V_{\rm ceil}$ to take into account the redshift uncertainty and the galaxy incompleteness respectively. These two additional parameters are critical for reproducing the observed 2PCF multipoles on 5--25$\,h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}$. The redshift uncertainties obtained from the best-fitting $v_{\rm smear}$ agree with those measured from repeat observations for all SDSS LRGs except for the LOWZ sample. We explore several potential systematics but none of them can explain the discrepancy found in LOWZ. Our explanation is that the LOWZ galaxies might contain another type of galaxies which needs to be treated differently. The evolution of the measured $\sigma$ and $V_{\rm ceil}$ also reveals that the incompleteness of eBOSS galaxies decreases with the redshift. This is the consequence of the magnitude lower limit applied in eBOSS LRG target selection. Our SHAM also set upper limits for the intrinsic scatter of the galaxy--halo relation given a complete galaxy sample: $\sigma_{\rm int}<0.31$ for LOWZ at $0.2

SkyPy is an open-source Python package for simulating the astrophysical sky. It comprises a library of physical and empirical models across a range of observables and a command-line script to run end-to-end simulations. The library provides functions that sample realisations of sources and their associated properties from probability distributions. Simulation pipelines are constructed from these models using a YAML-based configuration syntax, while task scheduling and data dependencies are handled internally and the modular design allows users to interface with external software. SkyPy is developed and maintained by a diverse community of domain experts with a focus on software sustainability and interoperability. By fostering development, it provides a framework for correlated simulations of a range of cosmological probes including galaxy populations, large scale structure, the cosmic microwave background, supernovae and gravitational waves. Version 0.4 implements functions that model various properties of galaxies including luminosity functions, redshift distributions and optical photometry from spectral energy distribution templates. Future releases will provide additional modules, for example, to simulate populations of dark matter halos and model the galaxy-halo connection, making use of existing software packages from the astrophysics community where appropriate., Comment: Published by JOSS. The concentration-mass (c-M) relation encodes the key information of the assembly history of the dark matter halos, however its behavior at the high mass end has not been measured precisely in observations yet. In this paper, we report the measurement of halo c-M relation with galaxy-galaxy lensing method, using shear catalog of the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) Data Release 8, which covers a sky area of 9500 deg^2. The foreground lenses are selected from redMaPPer, LOWZ, and CMASS catalogs, with halo mass range from 10^{13} to 10^{15} M_sun and redshift range from z=0.08 to z=0.65. We find that the concentration decreases with the halo mass from 10^{13} to 10^{14} M_sun, but shows a trend of upturn after the pivot point of ~10^{14} M_sun. We fit the measured c-M relation with the concentration model c(M)=C_0 (M/(10^{12} M_sun/h)^{-\gamma} [1+(M/M_0)^{0.4}], and get the values (C_0, \gamma, log(M_0) = (5.119_{-0.185}^{0.183}, 0.205_{-0.010}^{0.010}, 14.083_{-0.133}^{0.130}), and (4.875_{-0.208}^{0.209}, 0.221_{-0.010}^{0.010}, 13.750_{-0.141}^{0.142}) for halos with 0.08<=z<0.35 and 0.35<=z<0.65, respectively. We also show that the model including an upturn is favored over a simple power-law model. Halo assembly bias is the secondary dependence of the clustering of dark-matter haloes on their assembly histories at fixed halo mass. This established dependence is expected to manifest itself on the clustering of the galaxy population, a potential effect commonly known as galaxy assembly bias. Using the IllustrisTNG300 magnetohydrodynamical simulation, we analyse the dependence of the properties and clustering of galaxies on the shape of the specific mass accretion history of their hosting haloes (sMAH). We first show that several halo and galaxy properties strongly correlate with the slope of the sMAH ($\beta$) at fixed halo mass. Namely, haloes with increasingly steeper $\beta$ increment their halo masses faster at early times, and their hosted galaxies present larger stellar-to-halo mass ratios, lose their gas faster, reach the peak of their star formation histories at higher redshift, and become quenched earlier. We also demonstrate that $\beta$ is more directly connected to these key galaxy formation properties than other broadly employed halo proxies, such as formation time. Finally, we measure the secondary dependence of galaxy clustering on $\beta$ at fixed halo mass as a function of redshift. By tracing back the evolution of individual haloes, we show that the amplitude of the galaxy assembly bias signal for the progenitors of $z=0$ galaxies increases with redshift, reaching a factor of 2 at $z = 1$ for haloes of $M_\mathrm{halo}=10^{11.5}-10^{12}$ $h^{-1}\mathrm{M}_\odot$. The measurement of the evolution of assembly bias along the merger tree provides a new theoretical perspective to the study of secondary bias. Our findings, which show a tight relationship between halo accretion and both the clustering and the observational properties of the galaxy population, have also important implications for the generation of mock catalogues for upcoming cosmological surveys., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. New surveys such as ESA's Euclid mission are planned to map with unprecedented precision the large-scale structure of the Universe by measuring the 3D positions of tens of millions of galaxies. It is necessary to develop theoretically modelled galaxy catalogues to estimate the expected performance and to optimise the analysis strategy of these surveys. We populate two pairs of (1 Gpc/h)^3 volume dark-matter-only simulations from the UNIT project with galaxies using the SAGE semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, coupled to the photoionisation model get_emlines to estimate their H_alpha emission. These catalogues represent a unique suite that includes galaxy formation physics and - thanks to the fixed-pair technique used - an effective volume of ~(5 Gpc/h)^3, which is several times larger than the Euclid survey. We present the performance of these data and create five additional emission-line galaxy (ELG) catalogues by applying a dust attenuation model as well as adjusting the flux threshold as a function of redshift in order to reproduce Euclid-forecast dN/dz values. As a first application, we study the abundance and clustering of those model H_alpha ELGs: for scales greater than ~5 Mpc/h, we find a scale-independent bias with a value of $b\sim 1$ at redshift z ~ 0.5, that can increase nearly linearly to $b\sim 4$ at $z\sim 2$, depending on the ELG catalogue. We use the IllustrisTNG100 hydrodynamical simulation to study the dependence of the galaxy two-point correlation function on a broad range of secondary subhalo and galactic properties. We construct galaxy mock catalogues adopting a standard sub-halo abundance matching scheme coupled with a secondary assignment between galaxy colour or specific star formation rate and the following subhalo properties: starvation redshift z$_{\rm starve}$, concentration at infall, overdensity $\delta_R^{\rm env}$, tidal anisotropy $\alpha_R$, and tidal overdensity $\delta_R$. The last two quantities allow us to fully characterise the tidal field of our subhaloes, acting as mediators between their internal and large-scale properties. The resulting mock catalogues overall return good agreement with the IllustrisTNG100 measurements. The accuracy of each model strongly depends on the correlation between the secondary galaxy and subhalo properties employed. Among all the subhalo proxies tested, we find that z$_{\rm starve}$ and $c_{\rm infall}$ are the ones that best trace the large-scale structure, producing robust clustering predictions for different samples of red/blue and quenched/star-forming galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

The jackknife method gives an internal covariance estimate for large-scale structure surveys and allows model-independent errors on cosmological parameters. Using the SDSS-III BOSS CMASS sample, we study how the jackknife size and number of resamplings impact the precision of the covariance estimate on the correlation function multipoles and the error on the inferred baryon acoustic scale. We compare the measurement with the MultiDark Patchy mock galaxy catalogues, and we also validate it against a set of log-normal mocks with the same survey geometry. We build several jackknife configurations that vary in size and number of resamplings. We introduce the Hartlap factor in the covariance estimate that depends on the number of jackknife resamplings. We also find that it is useful to apply the tapering scheme to estimate the precision matrix from a limited number of resamplings. The results from CMASS and mock catalogues show that the error estimate of the baryon acoustic scale does not depend on the jackknife scale. For the shift parameter $\alpha$, we find an average error of 1.6%, 2.2% and 1.2%, respectively from CMASS, Patchy and log-normal jackknife covariances. Despite these uncertainties fluctuate significantly due to some structural limitations of the jackknife method, our $\alpha$ estimates are in reasonable agreement with published pre-reconstruction analyses. The Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale in the clustering of galaxies is a powerful standard ruler to measure cosmological distances and determine the geometry of the Universe. Past surveys have detected the BAO feature in the clustering of different galaxy samples, most of them composed of redder, quiescent galaxies and bluer, star-forming ones out to redshift $z\sim1$. Besides these targets, new upcoming surveys will observe high-redshift galaxies with bright nebular emission lines out to $z\sim2$, quasars and Lyman-$\alpha$ quasars at $z\gt 2$. All these different galaxy targets will be used as multi-tracers of the same underlying dark matter field. By combining them over wide cosmological volumes, we will be able to beat cosmic variance and measure the growth of structure with unprecedented accuracy. In this work, we measure the BAO scale in the two-point auto- and cross-correlation functions of three independent populations of multi-tracers extracted from the SDSS DR7 Main galaxy sample at redshift $0.02\lt z\lt 0.22$. Combining their covariances, we find accurate constraints on the shift parameter $\alpha=1.00\pm 0.04$ and $D_{\rm{V}}(z=0.1)/r_{\rm{s}}=2.92\pm0.12$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We use three semi-analytic models (SAMs) of galaxy formation and evolution, run on the same 1$h^{-1}$Gpc MultiDark Planck2 cosmological simulation, to investigate the properties of [OII] emission line galaxies in the redshift range $0.6

We test the history of structure formation from redshift 1 to today by matching galaxies from VIPERS and SDSS with dark matter haloes in the MultiDark SMDPL N-body simulation. We first show that the standard subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) recipe implemented with MultiDark characterizes the clustering of galaxies well both at redshift 0 for SDSS and at redshift 1 for VIPERS. This is an important validation of the SHAM model at high redshift. We then remap the simulation timesteps to test alternative growth histories and infer the growth index $\gamma=0.6\pm0.3$. The most massive and luminous galaxies in the Universe serve as powerful probes to study the formation of structure, the assembly of mass, and cosmology. However, their detailed formation and evolution is still barely understood. Here we extract a sample of massive mock galaxies from the semi-analytical model of galaxy formation (SAM) GALACTICUS from the MultiDark-Galaxies, by replicating the CMASS photometric selection from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The comparison of the GALACTICUS CMASS-mock with BOSS-CMASS data allows us to explore different aspects of the massive galaxy population at $0.5

J-PLUS is an ongoing 12-band photometric optical survey, observing thousands of square degrees of the Northern hemisphere from the dedicated JAST/T80 telescope at the Observatorio Astrof\'isico de Javalambre. T80Cam is a 2 sq.deg field-of-view camera mounted on this 83cm-diameter telescope, and is equipped with a unique system of filters spanning the entire optical range. This filter system is a combination of broad, medium and narrow-band filters, optimally designed to extract the rest-frame spectral features (the 3700-4000\AA\ Balmer break region, H$\delta$, Ca H+K, the G-band, the Mgb and Ca triplets) that are key to both characterize stellar types and to deliver a low-resolution photo-spectrum for each pixel of the sky observed. With a typical depth of AB $\sim 21.25$ mag per band, this filter set thus allows for an indiscriminate and accurate characterization of the stellar population in our Galaxy, it provides an unprecedented 2D photo-spectral information for all resolved galaxies in the local universe, as well as accurate photo-z estimates ($\Delta\,z\sim 0.01-0.03$) for moderately bright (up to $r\sim 20$ mag) extragalactic sources. While some narrow band filters are designed for the study of particular emission features ([OII]/$\lambda$3727, H$\alpha$/$\lambda$6563) up to $z < 0.015$, they also provide well-defined windows for the analysis of other emission lines at higher redshifts. As a result, J-PLUS has the potential to contribute to a wide range of fields in Astrophysics, both in the nearby universe (Milky Way, 2D IFU-like studies, stellar populations of nearby and moderate redshift galaxies, clusters of galaxies) and at high redshifts (ELGs at $z\approx 0.77, 2.2$ and $4.4$, QSOs, etc). We use the DECaLS DR3 survey photometry matched to the SDSS-III/BOSS DR12 spectroscopic catalog to investigate the morphology and stellar mass-size relation of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) within the CMASS and LOWZ galaxy samples in the redshift range $0.2

We analyze the spectra of 300,000 luminous red galaxies (LRGs) with stellar masses $M_* \gtrsim 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). By studying their star-formation histories, we find two main evolutionary paths converging into the same quiescent galaxy population at $z\sim0.55$. Fast-growing LRGs assemble $80\%$ of their stellar mass very early on ($z\sim5$), whereas slow-growing LRGs reach the same evolutionary state at $z\sim1.5$. Further investigation reveals that their clustering properties on scales of $\sim$1-30 Mpc are, at a high level of significance, also different. Fast-growing LRGs are found to be more strongly clustered and reside in overall denser large-scale structure environments than slow-growing systems, for a given stellar-mass threshold. Our results imply a dependence of clustering on stellar-mass assembly history (naturally connected to the mass-formation history of the corresponding halos) for a homogeneous population of similar mass and color, which constitutes a strong observational evidence of galaxy assembly bias., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We study the galaxy clustering dependence on the $\left[\mathrm{O\scriptsize{II}}\right]$ emission line luminosity in the SDSS DR7 Main galaxy sample at mean redshift $z\sim0.1$. We select volume-limited samples of galaxies with different $\left[\mathrm{O\scriptsize{II}}\right]$ luminosity thresholds and measure their projected, monopole and quadrupole two-point correlation functions. We model these observations using the 1$h^{-1}\rm{Gpc}$ MultiDark Planck cosmological simulation and generate light-cones with the SUrvey GenerAtoR algorithm. To interpret our results, we adopt a modified (Sub)Halo Abundance Matching scheme, accounting for the stellar mass incompleteness of the emission line galaxies. The satellite fraction constitutes an extra parameter in this model and allows to optimize the clustering fit on both small and intermediate scales (i.e. $r_p\lesssim 30h^{-1}\rm{Mpc})$, with no need of any velocity bias correction. We find that, in the local Universe, the $\left[\mathrm{O\scriptsize{II}}\right]$ luminosity correlates with all the clustering statistics explored and with the galaxy bias. This latter quantity correlates more strongly with the SDSS $r$-band magnitude than $\left[\mathrm{O\scriptsize{II}}\right]$ luminosity. In conclusion, we propose a straightforward method to produce reliable clustering models, entirely built on the simulation products, which provides robust predictions of the typical ELG host halo masses and satellite fraction values. DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will study baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey. To trace the underlying dark matter distribution, spectroscopic targets will be selected in four classes from imaging data. We will measure luminous red galaxies up to $z=1.0$. To probe the Universe out to even higher redshift, DESI will target bright [O II] emission line galaxies up to $z=1.7$. Quasars will be targeted both as direct tracers of the underlying dark matter distribution and, at higher redshifts ($ 2.1 < z < 3.5$), for the Ly-$\alpha$ forest absorption features in their spectra, which will be used to trace the distribution of neutral hydrogen. When moonlight prevents efficient observations of the faint targets of the baseline survey, DESI will conduct a magnitude-limited Bright Galaxy Survey comprising approximately 10 million galaxies with a median $z\approx 0.2$. In total, more than 30 million galaxy and quasar redshifts will be obtained to measure the BAO feature and determine the matter power spectrum, including redshift space distortions.

DESI (Dark Energy Spectropic Instrument) is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will study baryon acoustic oscillations and the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey. The DESI instrument is a robotically-actuated, fiber-fed spectrograph capable of taking up to 5,000 simultaneous spectra over a wavelength range from 360 nm to 980 nm. The fibers feed ten three-arm spectrographs with resolution $R= \lambda/\Delta\lambda$ between 2000 and 5500, depending on wavelength. The DESI instrument will be used to conduct a five-year survey designed to cover 14,000 deg$^2$. This powerful instrument will be installed at prime focus on the 4-m Mayall telescope in Kitt Peak, Arizona, along with a new optical corrector, which will provide a three-degree diameter field of view. The DESI collaboration will also deliver a spectroscopic pipeline and data management system to reduce and archive all data for eventual public use.

We present the measurements of the luminosity-dependent redshift-space three-point correlation functions (3PCFs) for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 Main galaxy sample. We compare the 3PCF measurements to the predictions from three different halo and subhalo models. One is the halo occupation distribution (HOD) model and the other two are extensions of the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) model by allowing the central and satellite galaxies to have different occupation distributions in the host halos and subhalos. Parameters in all the models are chosen to best describe the projected and redshift-space two-point correlation functions (2PCFs) of the same set of galaxies. All three model predictions agree well with the 3PCF measurements for the most luminous galaxy sample, while the HOD model better performs in matching the 3PCFs of fainter samples (with luminosity threshold below $L^*$), which is similar in trend to the case of fitting the 2PCFs. The decomposition of the model 3PCFs into contributions from different types of galaxy triplets shows that on small scales the dependence of the 3PCFs on triangle shape is driven by nonlinear redshift-space distortion (and not by the intrinsic halo shape) while on large scales it reflects the filamentary structure. The decomposition also reveals more detailed differences in the three models, which are related to the radial distribution, the mean occupation function, and the velocity distribution of satellite galaxies inside halos. The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) began observations in July 2014. It pursues three core programs: APOGEE-2, MaNGA, and eBOSS. In addition, eBOSS contains two major subprograms: TDSS and SPIDERS. This paper describes the first data release from SDSS-IV, Data Release 13 (DR13), which contains new data, reanalysis of existing data sets and, like all SDSS data releases, is inclusive of previously released data. DR13 makes publicly available 1390 spatially resolved integral field unit observations of nearby galaxies from MaNGA, the first data released from this survey. It includes new observations from eBOSS, completing SEQUELS. In addition to targeting galaxies and quasars, SEQUELS also targeted variability-selected objects from TDSS and X-ray selected objects from SPIDERS. DR13 includes new reductions of the SDSS-III BOSS data, improving the spectrophotometric calibration and redshift classification. DR13 releases new reductions of the APOGEE-1 data from SDSS-III, with abundances of elements not previously included and improved stellar parameters for dwarf stars and cooler stars. For the SDSS imaging data, DR13 provides new, more robust and precise photometric calibrations. Several value-added catalogs are being released in tandem with DR13, in particular target catalogs relevant for eBOSS, TDSS, and SPIDERS, and an updated red-clump catalog for APOGEE. This paper describes the location and format of the data now publicly available, as well as providing references to the important technical papers that describe the targeting, observing, and data reduction. MSE is an 11.25m aperture observatory with a 1.5 square degree field of view that will be fully dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy. More than 3200 fibres will feed spectrographs operating at low (R ~ 2000 - 3500) and moderate (R ~ 6000) spectral resolution, and approximately 1000 fibers will feed spectrographs operating at high (R ~ 40000) resolution. MSE is designed to enable transformational science in areas as diverse as tomographic mapping of the interstellar and intergalactic media; the in-situ chemical tagging of thick disk and halo stars; connecting galaxies to their large scale structure; measuring the mass functions of cold dark matter sub-halos in galaxy and cluster-scale hosts; reverberation mapping of supermassive black holes in quasars; next generation cosmological surveys using redshift space distortions and peculiar velocities. MSE is an essential follow-up facility to current and next generations of multi-wavelength imaging surveys, including LSST, Gaia, Euclid, WFIRST, PLATO, and the SKA, and is designed to complement and go beyond the science goals of other planned and current spectroscopic capabilities like VISTA/4MOST, WHT/WEAVE, AAT/HERMES and Subaru/PFS. It is an ideal feeder facility for E-ELT, TMT and GMT, and provides the missing link between wide field imaging and small field precision astronomy. MSE is optimized for high throughput, high signal-to-noise observations of the faintest sources in the Universe with high quality calibration and stability being ensured through the dedicated operational mode of the observatory. We present a study of the clustering and halo occupation distribution of BOSS CMASS galaxies in the redshift range 0.43 < z < 0.7 drawn from the Final SDSS-III Data Release. We compare the BOSS results with the predictions of a Halo Abundance Matching (HAM) clustering model that assigns galaxies to dark matter halos selected from the large BigMultiDark $N$-body simulation of a flat $\Lambda$CDM Planck cosmology. We compare the observational data with the simulated ones on a light-cone constructed from 20 subsequent outputs of the simulation. Observational effects such as incompleteness, geometry, veto masks and fiber collisions are included in the model, which reproduces within 1-$\sigma$ errors the observed monopole of the 2-point correlation function at all relevant scales: from the smallest scales, 0.5 $h^{-1}$ Mpc, up to scales beyond the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation feature. This model also agrees remarkably well with the BOSS galaxy power spectrum (up to $k\sim1$ $h$ Mpc$^{-1}$), and the Three-point correlation function. The quadrupole of the correlation function presents some tensions with observations. We discuss possible causes that can explain this disagreement, including target selection effects. Overall, the standard HAM model describes remarkably well the clustering statistics of the CMASS sample. We compare the stellar to halo mass relation for the CMASS sample measured using weak lensing in the CFHT Stripe 82 Survey with the prediction of our clustering model, and find a good agreement within 1-$\sigma$. We model the luminosity-dependent projected and redshift-space two-point correlation functions (2PCFs) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 Main galaxy sample, using the halo occupation distribution (HOD) model and the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) model and its extension. All the models are built on the same high-resolution $N$-body simulations. We find that the HOD model generally provides the best performance in reproducing the clustering measurements in both projected and redshift spaces. The SHAM model with the same halo-galaxy relation for central and satellite galaxies (or distinct haloes and subhaloes), when including scatters, has a best-fitting $\chi^2/\rm{dof}$ around $2$--$3$. We therefore extend the SHAM model to the subhalo clustering and abundance matching (SCAM) by allowing the central and satellite galaxies to have different galaxy--halo relations. We infer the corresponding halo/subhalo parameters by jointly fitting the galaxy 2PCFs and abundances and consider subhaloes selected based on three properties, the mass $M_{\rm acc}$ at the time of accretion, the maximum circular velocity $V_{\rm acc}$ at the time of accretion, and the peak maximum circular velocity $V_{\rm peak}$ over the history of the subhaloes. The three subhalo models work well for luminous galaxy samples (with luminosity above $L_*$). For low-luminosity samples, the $V_{\rm acc}$ model stands out in reproducing the data, with the $V_{\rm peak}$ model slightly worse, while the $M_{\rm acc}$ model fails to fit the data. Current and future large redshift surveys, as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS-IV/eBOSS) or the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), will use emission-line galaxies (ELG) to probe cosmological models by mapping the large-scale structure of the Universe in the redshift range $0.6 < z < 1.7$. With current data, we explore the halo-galaxy connection by measuring three clustering properties of $g$-selected ELGs as matter tracers in the redshift range $0.6 < z < 1$: (i) the redshift-space two-point correlation function using spectroscopic redshifts from the BOSS ELG sample and VIPERS; (ii) the angular two-point correlation function on the footprint of the CFHT-LS; (iii) the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal around the ELGs using the CFHTLenS. We interpret these observations by mapping them onto the latest high-resolution MultiDark Planck N-body simulation, using a novel (Sub)Halo-Abundance Matching technique that accounts for the ELG incompleteness. ELGs at $z\sim0.8$ live in halos of $(1\pm 0.5)\times10^{12}\,h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$ and 22.5$\pm2.5$% of them are satellites belonging to a larger halo. The halo occupation distribution of ELGs indicates that we are sampling the galaxies in which stars form in the most efficient way, according to their stellar-to-halo mass ratio., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

We explore the bluer star-forming population of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) III/BOSS CMASS DR11 galaxies at $z>0.55$ to quantify their differences, in terms of redshift-space distortions and large-scale bias, with respect to the luminous red galaxy sample. We perform a qualitative analysis to understand the significance of these differences and whether we can model and reproduce them in mock catalogs. Specifically, we measure galaxy clustering in CMASS on small and intermediate scales ($r\lesssim 50\,h^{-1}$Mpc) by computing the two-point correlation function $-$ both projected and redshift-space $-$ of these galaxies, and a new statistic, $\Sigma(\pi)$, able to provide robust information about redshift-space distortions and large-scale bias. We interpret our clustering measurements by adopting a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) scheme that maps them onto high-resolution N-body cosmological simulations to produce suitable mock galaxy catalogs. The traditional HOD prescription can be applied to the red and the blue samples, independently, but this approach is unphysical since it allows the same mock galaxies to be either red or blue. To overcome this failure, we modify the standard formulation and infer the red and the blue mock catalogs directly from the full one, so that they are complementary and non-overlapping. This separation is performed by matching the observed CMASS red and blue galaxy fractions and produces reliable and accurate models., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures

We present the measurements and modelling of the small-to-intermediate scale (0.1--25 Mpc/h) projected and three-dimensional (3D) redshift-space two-point correlation functions (2PCFs) of local galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. We find a clear dependence of galaxy clustering on luminosity in both projected and redshift spaces, generally being stronger for more luminous samples. The measurements are successfully interpreted within the halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework with central and satellite velocity bias parameters to describe galaxy kinematics inside haloes and to model redshift-space distortion (RSD) effects. In agreement with previous studies, we find that more luminous galaxies reside in more massive haloes. Including the redshift-space 2PCFs helps tighten the HOD constraints. Moreover, we find that luminous central galaxies are not at rest at the halo centres, with the velocity dispersion about 30% that of the dark matter. Such a relative motion may reflect the consequence of galaxy and halo mergers, and we find that central galaxies in lower mass haloes tend to be more relaxed with respect to their host haloes. The motion of satellite galaxies in luminous samples is consistent with their following that of the dark matter. For faint samples, satellites tends to have slower motion, with velocity dispersion inside haloes about 85% that of the dark matter. We discuss possible applications of the velocity bias constraints on studying galaxy evolution and cosmology.
