The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has recently been reported to emerge in magnetically-doped topological insulators. Although its general phenomenology is well established, the microscopic origin is far from being properly understood and controlled. Here we report on a detailed and systematic investigation of transition-metal (TM)-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with complementary experimental techniques, i.e., scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), resonant photoemission (resPES), and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we provide a complete spectroscopic characterization of both electronic and magnetic properties. Our results reveal that the TM dopants not only affect the magnetic state of the host material, but also significantly alter the electronic structure by generating impurity-derived energy bands. Our findings demonstrate the existence of a delicate interplay between electronic and magnetic properties in TM-doped TIs. In particular, we find that the fate of the topological surface states critically depends on the specific character of the TM impurity: while V- and Fe-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$ display resonant impurity states in the vicinity of the Dirac point, Cr and Mn impurities leave the energy gap unaffected. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy energy and easy axis, which control the magnetic gap opening and its stability, are also found to be strongly TM impurity-dependent and can vary from in-plane to out-of-plane depending on the impurity and its distance from the surface. Low-temperature electronic properties of rare-earth intermetallics are substantially influenced by the symmetry and magnitude of the crystal electric field. The direct spectroscopic analysis of crystal field splitting can be challenging, especially in low-dimensional systems, because it requires both high spectral resolution and pronounced sensitivity. We demonstrate the eligibility of electronic Raman spectroscopy for this purpose by the direct determination of the $4f$ level splitting in ultra-thin ordered CePt$_5$ films down to 1.7 nm thickness on Pt(111). Crystal field excitations of Ce $4f$ electrons give rise to Raman peaks with energy shifts up to $\approx$ 25 meV. Three distinct peaks occur which we attribute to inequivalent Ce sites, located (i) at the interface to the substrate, (ii) next to the Pt-terminated surface, and (iii) in the CePt$_5$ layers in between. The well-resolved Raman signatures allow us to identify a reduced crystal field splitting at the interface and an enhancement at the surface, highlighting its strong dependence on the local atomic environment., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The particle wave duality sets a fundamental correspondence between optics and quantum mechanics. Within this framework, the propagation of quasiparticles can give rise to superposition phenomena which, like for electromagnetic waves, can be described by the Huygens principle. However, the utilization of this principle by means of propagation and manipulation of quantum information is limited by the required coherence in time and space. Here we show that in topological insulators, which in their pristine form are characterized by opposite propagation directions for the two quasiparticles spin channels, mesoscopic focusing of coherent charge density oscillations can be obtained at large nested segments of constant energy contours by magnetic surface doping. Our findings provide evidence of strongly anisotropic Dirac fermion-mediated interactions. Even more remarkably, the validity of our findings goes beyond topological insulators but applies for systems with spin orbit lifted degeneracy in general. It demonstrates how spin information can be transmitted over long distances, allowing the design of experiments and devices based on coherent quantum effects in this fascinating class of materials.

Soft x-ray linear and circular dichroism (XLD, XMCD) experiments at the Ce M$_{4,5}$ edges are being used to determine the energy scales characterizing the Ce $4f$ degrees of freedom in the ultrathin ordered surface intermetallic CeAg$_x$/Ag(111). We find that all relevant interactions, i. e. Kondo scattering, crystal field splitting and magnetic exchange coupling occur on small scales. Our study demonstrates the usefulness of combining x-ray absorption experiments probing linear and circular dichroism owing to their strong sensitivity for anisotropies in both charge distribution and paramagnetic response, respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present an extensive study of structure, composition, electronic and magnetic properties of Ce--Pt surface intermetallic phases on Pt(111) as a function of their thickness. The sequence of structural phases appearing in low energy electron diffraction (LEED) may invariably be attributed to a single underlying intermetallic atomic lattice. Findings from both microscopic and spectroscopic methods, respectively, prove compatible with CePt$_5$ formation when their characteristic probing depth is adequately taken into account. The intermetallic film thickness serves as an effective tuning parameter which brings about characteristic variations of the Cerium valence and related properties. Soft x-ray absorption (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) prove well suited to trace the changing Ce valence and to assess relevant aspects of Kondo physics in the CePt$_5$ surface intermetallic. We find characteristic Kondo scales of the order of 10$^2$ K and evidence for considerable magnetic Kondo screening of the local Ce $4f$ moments. CePt$_5$/Pt(111) and related systems therefore appear to be promising candidates for further studies of low-dimensional Kondo lattices at surfaces., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

We use x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism to study electronic configuration and local susceptibility of CePt5/Pt(111) surface alloys from well above to well below the impurity Kondo temperature. The anisotropic paramagnetic response is governed by the hexagonal crystal field and ferromagnetic correlations, with modified parameters for Ce moments residing next to the alloy surface. Quantitative XMCD evaluations provide direct evidence of Kondo screening of both spin and orbital 4f moments. Magnetite thin fims have been grown epitaxially on ZnO and MgO substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The film quality was found to be strongly dependent on the oxygen partial pressure during growth. Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties were analyzed utilizing Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), HArd X-ray PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES), Magneto Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE), and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD). Diffraction patterns show clear indication for growth in the (111) direction on ZnO. Vertical structure analysis by HAXPES depth profiling revealed uniform magnetite thin films on both type of substrates. Of all current detection techniques with nanometer resolution, only X-ray microscopy allows imaging nanoparticles in suspension. Can it also be used to investigate structural dynamics? When studying response to mechanical stimuli, the challenge lies in applying them with precision comparable to spatial resolution. In the first shear experiments performed in an X-ray microscope, we accomplished this by inserting a piezo actuator driven shear cell into the focal plane of a scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM). Thus shear-induced reorganization of magnetite nanoparticle aggregates could be demonstrated in suspension.
