- Abstract
Reliable quantitative vegetation reconstructions for Europe during the Holocene are crucial to improving our understanding of landscape dynamics, making it possible to assess the past effects of environmental variables and land-use change on ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigating their effects in the future. We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1 degrees x 1 degrees) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the 'Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites' (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. These reconstructions offer a long-term perspective providing unique possibilities to explore spatial-temporal changes in past land cover and biodiversity.

Reliable quantitative vegetation reconstructions for Europe during the Holocene are crucial to improving our understanding of landscape dynamics, making it possible to assess the past effects of environmental variables and land-use change on ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigating their effects in the future. We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1° × 1°) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the ‘Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites’ (REVEALS) model.

This study has presented an algorithm for assembling, solving, and analyzing the results obtained by mathematical modeling of the disc piezoelectric transducers, which are widely used in hydroacoustics, microelectronics, microcircuit engineering (for example, as components of receiving antennas of hydroacoustic communication devices). The models developed in this study enable us to establish dependencies, which represent a mathematical description of the electroacoustic connection between the wave fields in different sections of the disc piezoelectric transducers. Analytical dependences obtained by mathematical modelling make it possible to establish the electrical impedance and quality factor together with the amplitude values of the electric charge and current on the electroded surfaces of the piezoelectric disk, subject to the inverse piezoelectric effect conditions. A complete calculation of the problem of harmonic radial oscillations of disc piezoelectric transducers allowed the authors to significantly expand the list of physical and mechanical parameters of the piezoelectric material, which had been previously determined experimentally. The research has revealed the dependence of the change in electrical impedance on the values of the electromechanical coupling coefficient, the wave number of elastic oscillations, and the Voigt indices. The study has also determined a high agreement between the electric impedance modules of discs made of lead zirconate titanate PZT piezoelectric ceramics with and without the piezoelectric effect (the difference between the impedance values in these cases did not exceed 18%). В матерiалах статтi представлено алгоритм побудови та дослiдження математичних моделей дискових п’єзоелектричних перетворювачiв, що знаходять широке застосування в гiдроакустицi, мiкроелектронiцi, мiкросхемотехнiцi (наприклад, як компоненти приймальних антен приладiв гiдроакустичного зв’язку). Проведений повний розрахунок задачi щодо гармонiйних радiальних коливань дискових п’єзоелектричних перетворювачiв дозволив суттєво розширити перелiк фiзико-механiчних параметрiв п’єзоматерiалу, якi ранiше визначалися експериментально. Показана залежнiсть змiни електричного iмпедансу вiд значень коефiцiєнту електромеханiчного зв’язку, хвильового числа пружних коливань та iндексiв Фойгта.

- Abstract
Hyalomma marginatum is an endemic tick species in Mediterranean countries. Its area of distribution keeps expanding and has reached the South of France (region Occitanie) in 2015. H. marginatum is known as a vector of pathogens of interest in veterinary and human health, the most concerning H. marginatum-borne pathogen being the Crimean-Congo fever virus. Bacteria from genera Rickettsia and Anaplasma as well as the Theileria equi parasites are other pathogens H. marginatum is known to carry. It is within this context that reconstructing H. marginatum invasion history and assess associated risks has become a necessity for the tick control. The Holis-Tiques project founded by “Défi clé RIVOC région Occitanie” was built to handle this challenge. The scientific questions are spread into four work packages managed by several partner experts. Massive ticks sampling campaigns following different conditions are planned in order to provide the biological material necessary to cover the entire project. To get into the bottom of the subject, H. marginatum spread in Occitanie will be evaluated and mapped in time (2016-2022), and space. Key factors such as development and survival determinants -potentially explaining its invasion capacity- will be investigated according to experimental cages on the field assigned to different conditions (light, shadow, temperature, hygrometry) and will allow to feed distribution models. Moreover, potential genetic signatures associated to H. marginatum expansion will be highlighted by population phylogeographic and genetic studies. Since the tick is expanding, pathogen dissemination issues also raise a concern. About 40 pathogens (bacteria, virus, parasites) will be screened by the Fluidigm® technology in order to monitor pathogens distribution in space and time. On the other hand, H. marginatum microbiota have rarely been examined. The Holis-Tiques project will therefore assess the spatio-temporal dynamics of the H. marginatum microbiota. Combi

Significance A detailed characterization of viral load kinetics and its association with disease evolution is key to understand the virus pathogenesis, identify high-risk patients, and design better treatment strategies. We here analyze the mortality and the virological information collected in 655 hospitalized patients, including 284 with longitudinal measurements, and we build a mathematical model of virus dynamics and survival. We predict that peak viral load occurs 1 d before symptom onset, on average, and that dynamics of decline after peak is slower in older patients. Viral load dynamics after hospital admission is an independent predictor of the risk of death, suggesting that prolonged viral shedding of high quantities of virus is associated with poor outcome in this population., The characterization of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral kinetics in hospitalized patients and its association with mortality is unknown. We analyzed death and nasopharyngeal viral kinetics in 655 hospitalized patients from the prospective French COVID cohort. The model predicted a median peak viral load that coincided with symptom onset. Patients with age ≥65 y had a smaller loss rate of infected cells, leading to a delayed median time to viral clearance occurring 16 d after symptom onset as compared to 13 d in younger patients (P < 10−4). In multivariate analysis, the risk factors associated with mortality were age ≥65 y, male gender, and presence of chronic pulmonary disease (hazard ratio [HR] > 2.0). Using a joint model, viral dynamics after hospital admission was an independent predictor of mortality (HR = 1.31, P < 10−3). Finally, we used our model to simulate the effects of effective pharmacological interventions on time to viral clearance and mortality. A treatment able to reduce viral production by 90% upon hospital admission would shorten the time to viral clearance by 2.0 and 2.9 d in patients of age

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is an endocrine-disrupting pollutant formed during incomplete combustion of organic materials. It has been recognized as a reproductive and developmental toxicant, however epidemiological evidence of the long-term effect of ambient air BaP on breast cancer (BC) is limited. Thus we evaluated associations between ambient air BaP exposure and risk of BC, overall and according to menopausal status and molecular subtypes (estrogen receptor negative/positive (ER-/ER+) and progesterone receptor negative/positive (PR-/PR+)), stage and grade of differentiation of BC in the French E3N cohort study. METHODS: Within a nested case-control study of 5222 incident BC cases and 5222 matched controls, annual BaP exposure was estimated using a chemistry-transport model (CHIMERE) and was assigned to the geocoded residential addresses of participants for each year during the 1990-2011 follow-up period. Multivariable conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Overall, cumulative airborne BaP exposure was significantly associated with the overall risk of BC, for each 1 interquartile range (IQR) increase in the concentration levels of BaP (1.42 ng/m3), the OR = 1.15 (95% CI: 1.04-1.27). However, by menopausal status, the significant positive association remained only in women who underwent menopausal transition (i.e. premenopausal women at inclusion who became postmenopausal at diagnosis), OR per 1 IQR = 1.20 (95% CI: 1.03-1.40). By hormone receptor status, positive associations were observed for ER+, PR + and ER + PR + BC, with ORs = 1.17 (95% CI: 1.04-1.32), 1.16 (95% CI: 1.01-1.33), and 1.17 (95% CI: 1.01-1.36) per 1 IQR, respectively. There was also a borderline positive association between BaP and grade 3 BC (OR per 1 IQR = 1.15 (95% CI: 0.99-1.34). CONCLUSIONS: We provide evidence of increased risk of BC associated with cumulative BaP exposure, which varied according to m

- Abstract
Molecular studies suggest that cadmium due to its estrogenic properties, might play a role in breast cancer (BC) progression. However epidemiological evidence is limited. This study explored the association between long-term exposure to airborne cadmium and risk of BC by stage, grade of differentiation, and histological types at diagnosis. A nested case-control study of 4401 cases and 4401 matched controls was conducted within the French E3N cohort. A Geographic Information System (GIS)-based metric demonstrated to reliably characterize long-term environmental exposures was employed to evaluate airborne exposure to cadmium. Multivariable adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using conditional logistic regression models. There was no relationship between cadmium exposure and stage of BC. Also, no association between cadmium exposure and grade of differentiation of BC was observed. However, further analyses by histological type suggested a positive association between cadmium and risk of invasive tubular carcinoma (ITC) BC [ORQ5 vs Q1 = 3.4 (95% CI 1.1-10.7)]. The restricted cubic spline assessment suggested a dose-response relationship between cadmium and ITC BC subtype. Our results do not support the hypothesis that airborne cadmium exposure may play a role in advanced BC risk, but suggest that cadmium may be associated with an increased risk of ITC.

ESGAP, ESGBIS, ESGIE and the CRGNB treatment survey study group., [Objectives] To explore contemporary antibiotic management of infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria in hospitals., [Methods] Cross-sectional, internet-based questionnaire survey. We contacted representatives of all hospitals with more than 800 acute-care hospital beds in France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Slovenia, Spain and selected hospitals in the USA. We asked respondents to describe the most common actual practice at their hospital regarding management of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa through close-ended questions., [Results] Between January and June 2017, 115 of 141 eligible hospitals participated (overall response rate 81.6%, country-specific rates 66.7%–100%). Most were tertiary-care (99/114, 86.8%), university-affiliated (110/115, 89.1%) hospitals and most representatives were infectious disease specialists (99/115, 86.1%). Combination therapy was prescribed in 114/115 (99.1%) hospitals at least occasionally. Respondents were more likely to consider combination therapy when treating bacteraemia, pneumonia and central nervous system infections and for Enterobacteriaceae, P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii similarly. Combination of a polymyxin with a carbapenem was used in most cases, whereas combinations of a polymyxin with tigecycline, an aminoglycoside, fosfomycin or rifampicin were also common. Monotherapy was used for treatment of complicated urinary tract infections, usually with an aminoglycoside or a polymyxin. The intended goal of combination therapy was to improve the effectiveness of the treatment and to prevent development of resistance. In general, respondents shared the misconception that combination therapy is supported by strong scientific evidence., [Conclusions] Combination therapy was the preferred treatment strategy for infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria among hospital representatives, even though high-quality evidence for carbapenem-based combination therapy is lacking., EDM received funding by NIH for project HHSN272201000039C.
