Abstract

The simple Maxwellian EEDF (Electron Energy Distribution Function) used in collisional plasmas at thermodynamic equilibrium can be distorted when the plasma is close enough to a RF source especially when electrons are well magnetized. This has been verified in our experimental device Aline. During the experiment, negative floating potentials have been found when a Langmuir probe is magnetically connected to the RF electrode, in both direct and capacitive coupling. Floating potentials as low as -40 to -100 V have been measured while the plasma potential remains positive. The large gap between them can be explained by energetic electron beams accelerated in the RF sheath surrounding the electrode. Such acceleration is known as stochastic heating, which is investigated using PIC (Particle in Cells) simulation to demonstrate the importance of the tilting angle of the electrode with respect to the magnetic field direction in the enhancement of these electron beams. Both measurements and PIC simulations show these beams are much stronger at grazing angle, inducing a bi-Maxwellian EEDF with two characteristic temperatures, the highest value explaining the high negative floating potentials. Abstract

Applications of magnetized Radio Frequency (RF) capacitive discharges for mirror cleaning applications of optical diagnostic systems in fusion devices and heat flux measurements have received a large interest in last years. Ensuring the ho-mogeneity of heat flux to the RF electrode requires localized measurements of plasma parameters in front of the RF electrode. Langmuir probe measurements were taken in the ALINE plasma device around the active RF electrode with the help of a 3D manipulator equipped with RF compensation. Highly negative floating potential values were recorded inside the magnetic flux tube connected to the active RF electrode whilst plasma potential remained positive. Since the difference between the plasma po-tential and the floating potential is proportional to the average electron temperature, experimental investigations were carried out in capacitive coupling and direct coupling to study the change in floating potential as a function of input gas pressure, magnetic field strength (B), and the angle between the RF electrode and magnetic field. The observed change in floating potential is attributed to the stochastic heating leading to the generation of hot electrons, which was confirmed using the Langmuir probe current-voltage curves. Abstract

Local plasma biasings due to RF sheaths close to ICRF antennas result mainly in a negative DC current collection on the antenna structure. In some specific cases, we may observe positive currents when the ion mobility (seen from the collecting surface) overcomes the electron one or/and when the collecting surface on the antenna side becomes larger than the other end of the flux tube connected to the wall. The typical configuration is when the antenna surface is almost parallel to the magnetic field lines and the other side perpendicular. To test the optimal case where the magnetic field is quasi-parallel to the electrode surface, one needs a linear magnetic configuration as our magnetized RF discharge experiment called Aline. The magnetic field angle is in our case lower than 1 relative to the RF biased surface. The DC current flowing through the discharge has been measured as a function of the magnetic field strength, neutral gas (He) pressure and RF power. The main result is the reversal of the DC current depending on the magnetic field, collision frequency and RF power level.

Abstract

International audience; Potential and density structures in the vicinity of a RF electrode/antenna in a magnetized plasma are investigated using a RF compensated cylindrical Langmuir probe. These measurements were performed in the ALINE plasma device in which only electrons can be considered as well magnetized. Very precise 2-D maps of the plasma parameters are drawn thanks to a 3-D automatic manipulator on which the probe is mounted. The effect of the tilted magnetic angle between the RF biased surface and the magnetic lines is also studied thanks to a tilting electrode. Comparison of several simplistic models with the experiments proved the reliability of simple Langmuir probe measurements in such a RF and magnetized environment (space potential v.s. tilting angle of the antenna with respect to magnetic field lines, and recovering of the floating potential structure using measured currents). A fluid model based on total current density, and ion diffusion equations over the biased flux tube, provides the same density structures in front of the electrode than the measurements. Those density structures display a "bunny ears" shape, and can be explained using transverse RF and collisional current behaviour: in front of the antenna the transverse ion currents deplete the magnetized flux tube, while at the edge of the biased flux tube, the same currents rise the density.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we implement the stretched-coordinate Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) technique in [Texeira1998b] to emulate full power absorption outside the simulation domain for time-harmonic electromagnetic wave propagation in presence of gyrotropic dielectric tensor and curved geometry relevant for magnetized plasma devices. We recall the PML formulation as an artificial inhomogeneous lossy medium, following the stretching into the complex plane of a general system of three orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. We apply the general method in cylindrical and toroidal geometries. We then assess this technique in a simple case combining gyrotropy and coordinate curvature. Our test problem analytically quantifies the reflection of Transverse Electric (TE) cylindrical eigenmodes in a gyrotropic medium by a radial PML in cylindrical geometry. The obtained reflection coefficient involves wave, PML and geometric parameters at the PML location. The new coefficient generalizes the one obtained earlier with Cartesian coordinates, and becomes equivalent when the effects of the local cylindrical curvature at the PML (stretched) location can be neglected. These curvature effects are outlined and the limitations they impose on the properties of the PML are quantified as a function of the relevant parameters. Peculiarities related to the gyrotropy are also highlighted. Finite element calculations of the test problem in two-dimensional cylindrical geometry are exploited to verify these properties numerically. Indications are finally given on how to choose the PML parameters in order to obtain a minimal wave reflection at given numerical cost, taking into account errors associated with the numerical scheme.

Abstract

IShTAR (Ion cyclotron Sheath Test ARrangement) is a linear magnetized plasma test facility dedicated to the investigation of RF wave/plasma interaction [1] in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF). It provides a better accessibility for the instrumentation than tokamaks while being representative of the neighboring region of the wave emitter. It is equipped with a magnetized plasma source (1 m long, 0.4 m diameter) powered by a helical antenna up to 3 kW at 11 MHz. We present the results of the first analysis of the plasma characteristics (plasma density, electron temperature) in function of the operating parameters (injected power, neutral pressure and magnetic field) as measured with fixed and movable Langmuir probes, spectrometer and cameras. The plasma is presently produced only by the helical antenna (no ICRF). We show that the plasma exists in three regime depending on the power level: the first two ones are stable and separated by a jump in density; a first spatial profile of the plasma density has been established for these modes; The third mode is unstable, characterized by strong oscillations of the plasma tube position.
