Problem: All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) cause a distressing number of fatalities and injuries among farm youth in the United States. The number of severe injuries caused by ATV crashes on farms, which stood at 25 children in 2019, is expected to rise due to increased ATV sales during the COVID-19 pandemic. Existing research into children's injuries has explored physical capabilities like anthropometry, strength, and visual acuity. Yet, studies assessing youths' physical ability to operate ATVs remain limited. This study tests the hypothesis that diminished vision field in young ATV operators raises crash risks. Methods: This study used SAMMIECAD digital human modeling system to simulate and compare the field of vision of youth and adult ATV operators. The simulations incorporated 3-D mockups of ATVs, humans, sprayer tanks, windshields, and obstacles. Ten utility ATVs and children of both genders across nine ages (8–16) and three height percentiles (5th, 50th, 95th) were evaluated. Results: Simulations showed that young ATV operators generally have a more restricted field of vision than adults, particularly those aged 6–11 years. Discussion: Visual limitations hinder riders' ability to see ATV controls, potentially leading to vehicle control loss. Moreover, they impair environmental perception during riding, compromising youths' ATV operation abilities and increasing crash risks. Practical Applications: These findings offer crucial data in support of modifying ATV safety guidelines. Objective: The aim of this study was to introduce and evaluate two interventions, Ergo Bucket Carrier (EBC) and Easy Lift (EL), for youths (and adults) to handle water/feed buckets on farms.Background: The physical activities of both adult and youth farm workers contribute to the development of low-back disorders (LBDs). Many of the activities youths perform on farms are associated with increased LBD risk, particularly, the handling of water and feed buckets.Method: Seventeen adult and youth participants (10 males and seven females) participated in this study. To assess the risk of LBDs, the participants were instrumented with a three-dimensional spinal electrogonio-meter while lifting, carrying, and dumping water buckets using the traditional method and the two interventions.Results: For both the adult and youth groups, the results showed that the two interventions significantly decrease the magnitudes of LBD risk in many of the tasks evaluated. Overall, the use of the EBC resulted in a 41% reduction in the level of LBD risk for the carrying task and a reduction of 69% for the dumping task. Using the EL, on the other hand, is especially effective for lifting tasks (55% reduction in LBD risk). Results of the subjective response were consistent with the objective evaluations.Conclusion: This study demonstrated the potential for ergonomic interventions in reducing LBD risk during the common farming task of bucket handling.Application: Potential application of this study includes the introduction of the EBC and EL in family farms to reduce the LBD risk among youth and adult farmers. All-terrain vehicle (ATV) incidents are one of the leading causes of injuries and fatalities among youth in the agricultural industry. It has been hypothesized that many youth-related ATV incidents occur because children ride ATVs that do not fit their capabilities and are not following basic safe riding practices. In addition, various ATV safety guidelines regarding youth (e.g., CPSC, ANSI/SVIA, ASI) are inconsistent and may not align with state or local laws. To the best of our knowledge, no comprehensive studies have compared the physical and mental requirements for riding ATVs and the youth's capabilities to ride ATVs safely. Consequently, there are no scientific-based recommendations for age limitation, physical and mental capabilities, and safety requirements for youth to ride ATVs safely. Thus, there is a need to review the available sources related to youth safety and ATVs in the agricultural industry, identify the research voids, and recommend modifications to current ATV guidelines. This study conducted a systematic review of available ATV-related studies, standards, guidelines, and laws to establish better-informed minimum age, physical and mental capabilities, and safety requirements for youths to ride ATVs on the farm. Problem: Utility All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are one major cause of youth injuries and fatalities on farms. Utility ATVs have heavy weights and fast speeds that require complex maneuvering. Youth's physical capabilities may not be sufficient to perform those complex maneuvers correctly. Therefore, it is hypothesized that most youth engage in ATV-related incidents because they ride vehicles unfit for them. There is a need to assess ATV-youth fit based on youth anthropometry. Method: This study focused on evaluating potential inconsistencies between the operational requirements of utility ATVs and the anthropometric measures of youth through virtual simulations. Virtual simulations were performed to assess 11 youth-ATV fit guidelines proposed by several ATV safety advocacy organizations (National 4-H council, CPSC, IPCH, and FReSH). In total, 17 utility ATVs along with male-and-female-youth of nine ages (8 to 16 years old) and three height percentiles (5th, 50th, and 95th) were evaluated. Results: The results demonstrated a physical mismatch between ATVs' operational requirements and youth's anthropometry. For example, male-youth aged 16 of the 95th height percentile failed to pass at least 1 out of the 11 fit guidelines for 35 % of all vehicles evaluated. The results were even more concerning for females. Female youth 10 years old and younger (from all height percentiles) failed to pass at least one fit guideline for all ATVs evaluated. Discussion: Youth are not recommended to ride utility ATVs. Practical Applications: This study provides quantitative and systematic evidence to modify current ATV safety guidelines. Abstract: A prior laboratory study found that when wearing a weight transfer device in the stooped posture, trunk flexions were reduced, and subjects who did not experience flexion–relaxation of the erector spinae had reduced back muscle activity. Whole-body musculoskeletal models, which included individual passive torso stiffness and anthropometry, were implemented to predict loads in the passive tissues of the back and the leg joints. Results predicted that when wearing the device in the stooped posture, compression and shear forces at the L5–S1 level were reduced by 13% and 12% respectively. Internal loads in the leg joints were reduced between 10% and 31%. Much of the reduction in joint loads may be a result of the device’s ability to limit torso flexion during stoop, rather than a transferring of load. While these results show possible benefit in the short-term, further study is needed on the long-term effects to determine if the device is an effective intervention for those who use the stooped posture routinely. Abstract: Repetitive work in the stooped posture is a known risk factor for developing low back disorders (LBDs); regardless, the stooped posture is widespread throughout the world in the agriculture, construction, and mining industries. An on-body weight transfer device was tested as a possible intervention for reducing the risk of developing LBDs. Eighteen subjects (11 male and 7 female), with no history of LBDs, performed stooped posture tasks in the laboratory. Surface electromyograms of the erector spinae, rectus abdominis, biceps femoris, and tibialis anterior muscles were recorded. Bodily joint flexions were measured with a combination of inclinometers and electrogoniometers. When wearing the device in the stooped posture, biceps femoris activity and lumbar flexion were significantly reduced. Subjects who did not experience flexion–relaxation had a significant reduction in lumbar erector spinae activity. By reducing back muscle activity, and by limiting lumbar flexion, the device could reduce the risk of developing LBDs for those who work while adopting the stooped posture. The device may also be beneficial for those with existing LBDs. Follow up field studies are needed to confirm the long-term potential benefits of such an intervention approach. Abstract: High resolution strain measurements are of particular interest in load bearing tissues such as the intervertebral disc (IVD), permitting characterization of biomechanical conditions which could lead to injury and degenerative outcomes. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging produces excellent image contrast in cartilaginous tissues, allowing for image-based strain determination. Nonrigid registration (NRR) of MR images has previously demonstrated sub-voxel registration accuracy although its accuracy and precision in determining strain has not been evaluated. Accuracy and precision of NRR-derived strain measurements were evaluated using computer generated deformations applied to both computer generated images and MR images. Two different measures of registration similarity—the cost function which drives the registration algorithm—were compared: Mutual Information (MI) and Least Squares (LS). Strain error was evaluated with respect to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and strain heterogeneity. Additionally, the creep strain response from an in vitro loaded porcine IVD is shown and comparisons between similarity measures are presented. MI showed a decrease in strain precision with increasing CNR and decreasing SNR while LS was insensitive to both. Both similarity measures showed a decrease in strain precision with increasing strain heterogeneity. When computer generated heterogeneous strains were applied to MR images of the IVD, LS showed substantially lower strain error in comparison to MI. Results suggest that LS-driven NRR provides a more accurate image-based method for mapping large and heterogeneous strain fields and this method can be applied to studies of the IVD and, potentially, other soft tissues which present sufficient image texture. Abstract: This paper gives an overview of the extent of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in agriculture, and a historical perspective on how ergonomics has been used to reduce the health effects of labor-intensive agriculture. A summary of exposure to MSD physical risk factors within various classes of crops, along with various administrative and engineering controls for abating MSDs in agriculture is given. These controls range from programmed rest breaks to mechanized or partially-mechanized operations. Worker-based approaches such as prone carts and platforms, and load transfer devices hold promise in combating the prevalent stooped work in agriculture. Including the worker as an integral contributor to all aspects of developing and implementing an intervention, and considering the psychosocial and socio-cultural aspects of the work environment are crucial elements of effective interventions for reducing MSDs. Despite the advent progress in new technologies in agricultural practices, reliance on labor, especially in fresh market fruits and vegetables, will always be a major cornerstone of agriculture for at least the foreseen future. It is encouraging to see the increased interest among health and safety professionals, epidemiologists, engineers, social scientists, and ergonomists throughout the world who are committed to the plight of reducing MSDs and other health problems among agricultural workers. Many commercial vehicles have steps and grab-rails to assist the driver in safely entering/exiting the vehicle. However, many drivers do not use these aids. The purpose of this study was to compare impact forces experienced during various exit methods from commercial equipment. The study investigated impact forces of ten male subjects while exiting two tractors, a step-van, a box-trailer, and a cube-van. The results showed that exiting from cab-level or trailer-level resulted in impact forces as high as 12 times the subject's body weight; whereas, fully utilizing the steps and grab-rails resulted in impact forces less than two times body weight. An approach that emphasizes optimal design of entry/exit aids coupled with driver training and education is expected to minimize exit-related injuries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most biomechanical assessments of spinal loading during industrial work have focused on estimating peak spinal compressive forces under static and sagittally symmetric conditions. The main objective of this study was to explore the potential of feasibly predicting three-dimensional (3D) spinal loading in industry from various combinations of trunk kinematics, kinetics, and subject-load characteristics. The study used spinal loading, predicted by a validated electromyography-assisted model, from 11 male participants who performed a series of symmetric and asymmetric lifts. Three classes of models were developed: (a) models using workplace, subject, and trunk motion parameters as independent variables (kinematic models); (b) models using workplace, subject, and measured moments variables (kinetic models); and (c) models incorporating workplace, subject, trunk motion, and measured moments variables (combined models). The results showed that peak 3D spinal loading during symmetric and asymmetric lifting were predicted equally well using all three types of regression models. Continuous 3D loading was predicted best using the combined models. When the use of such models is infeasible, the kinematic models can provide adequate predictions. Finally, lateral shear forces (peak and continuous) were consistently underestimated using all three types of models. The study demonstrated the feasibility of predicting 3D loads on the spine under specific symmetric and asymmetric lifting tasks without the need for collecting EMG information. However, further validation and development of the models should be conducted to assess and extend their applicability to lifting conditions other than those presented in this study. Movement speed during trunk flexion has long been reported to affect task performance and biomechanical responses. The current study investigated how movement speed changed lumbopelvic coordination, especially lumbopelvic continuous relative phase and phase variability during trunk flexion. Eighteen subjects executed a paced trunk flexion routine over time periods of 3, 7, 11 and 15seconds. The results demonstrated that compared with the 3-s condition, lumbopelvic continuous relative phase was 98.8% greater in the 15-s condition, indicating a more anti-phase coordination pattern. This pattern is suggested to mitigate the increased spinal loading associated with the longer duration of muscle exertion. Additionally, phase variability was 18.8% greater in the 15-s trials than the 3-s trials, such an unstable coordination pattern is likely caused by the more active neuromuscular control. Background Trunk flexion and extension have already been found to have different characteristics, such as those in lumbopelvic rhythm. Although a more advanced method of quantifying such rhythm, lumbopelvic continuous relative phase and phase variability have not been used to explore the differences between trunk flexion and extension motions. This information is important since abnormal lumbopelvic coordination patterns increase the risk of low back pain. The current study investigated the differences in lumbopelvic rhythm between trunk flexion and extension, and how the rhythm changed within each of the two motions. Methods Thirteen subjects performed pace-controlled trunk flexion/extension motions in the sagittal plane while lumbar and pelvis kinematics data were recorded, such that the lumbopelvic continuous relative phase and phase variability could be calculated to quantify lumbopelvic rhythm. Findings Trunk extension motion had significantly smaller lumbopelvic continuous relative phase and phase variability than flexion motion, which indicated a more in-phase and stable rhythm. Additionally, the lumbopelvic rhythm within trunk extension motion changed from a more in-phase and stable pattern to a more out-of-phase and unstable pattern; by contrast, the opposite change (from out-of-phase and unstable to in-phase and stable) was observed in trunk flexion. Interpretation Findings of the current study provided important information about the differences in lumbopelvic rhythm between trunk flexion and extension motions. Quantifying these patterns provides the means for identifying abnormal patterns in a clinical setting, and could serve as normative benchmarks during low back pain rehabilitation plans. The automation of intra-row weed control in row crop production systems is very challenging. This work describes the development and in-field assessment of an automatic intra-row, hoe-based weeding co-robot system with real-time pneumatic hoe actuation based on an accurate odometry sensing technique. The US National Science Foundation has identified a need for robots (called co-robots) that serve as co-workers and work beside, or cooperatively with, people. These co-robots have a symbiotic relationship with a human partner, where, as a team, they combine their relative strengths to jointly perform a task. Such co-robots should be relatively inexpensive and easy to use. In this work, mechanical weed control was achieved by a co-robot actuator that automatically positioned a pair of miniature hoes into the intra-row zone between crop plants. The design was tested in a precision transplanted row crop and may also be suitable for direct seeded row crops. Co-robot cost was minimised by limiting the system to a single, simple odometry sensor. Co-robot hoe actuation was controlled using pre-programmed knowledge of the crop planting pattern and real-time odometry data as the control input for hoe positioning. Low-frequency drift in the odometry control points relative to the actual plant locations was corrected occasionally as needed in real-time by a human partner monitoring system performance. The co-robot was evaluated in an experimental trial conducted on the UC Davis campus farm. Assessment was based upon the follow-up hand hoeing required after automated intra-row weeding in comparison to the labour required to manually hoe a control plot. The mean person hours required for hand hoeing weeds in the control were 0.241 h for the 100 m 2 plot, while only 0.102 h 100 m −2 were required in follow-up labour to complete the weed removal in the plots weeded by the co-robot. This represents a 57.5% reduction in hand labour requirements for intra-row weed control and indicates that the co-robot could help reduce traditional hand hoeing labour requirements with mechanised weed control in intra-row areas between the crop plants. The purpose of this study was to quantify biomechanical and cardiovascular exposure while making beds with and without interventions (mattress lift tool and fitted sheet). Sixteen female hotel room cleaners participated in this multifactorial (tool and sheet) laboratory study of crossover design. Exertion in the upper extremity (<2) and back (<3) was consistently lower when using the tool and fitted sheet (p < 0.05). The average number of lifts per bed was reduced by 48% with an 18 s increase in cycle time per bed. Peak forearm flexor activity was significantly lower when using a tool(p < 0.05). Spinal lateral plane range of motion (p < 0.02) and maximum twisting velocity (p < 0.03) were lowest using the tool and fitted sheet together. Interventions such as a mattress lift tool used with a fitted sheet reduced the number of mattress lifts and lowered perceived exertion among hotel room cleaners while making beds. • CPDs' effectiveness should be evaluated with repeatable rollover experiments. • An autonomous ATV is expected to deliver repeatable results in rollover simulations. • The developed autonomous ATV can accurately follow an assigned path with consistent speeds under various loads. Utility All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are commonly used on farms for agricultural activities such as carrying implements, applying fertilizers, and transportation. Among all agricultural ATV incidents on farms, rollover crushes are the leading cause of fatalities. Crush Protection Devices (CPDs) are passive safety structures that potentially decrease the severity of injuries and the number of deaths in agricultural ATV rollover incidents. However, there are contradictions in the results of previous studies regarding the effectiveness of CPDs in protecting the operator in rollover incidents. The effectiveness of CPDs should be evaluated experimentally with an autonomous ATV, allowing repeatable and systematic rollover tests. This study aims at developing three automatic control systems on an ATV for future rollover simulations: (1) Global Positioning System (GPS)- based navigation system that allows autonomous steering, (2) remote cruise control module for keeping consistent riding speeds, and (3) remote braking system for safety in future unmanned ATV tests. The performance of each system was examined by operating the autonomous ATV in an outdoor testing terrain. The term autonomy in this study refers to the autonomous steering system, along with the remotely controlled speed and braking systems. Results showed that the developed systems performed within the acceptable range for conducting future rollover tests accurately and safely. Abstract: Hand cultivation and harvest of agricultural products constitute strenuous physical tasks. Working with labor–management ergonomics committees in agricultural settings, the UC Agricultural Ergonomics Research Center (AERC) tested an experimental rest and recovery protocol for its impact on symptoms and productivity during two types of work tasks. The experimental condition consisted of adding a 5min rest break to every working hour in which there was no other scheduled break (e.g., lunchtime). This resulted in an additional 20min of rest per workday. We tested the intervention in two trials: Trial one compared workers () randomly assigned to an experimental or a control group during the harvest of commercial strawberries. Trial two utilized a cross-over design ( pairs of workers) to compare experimental and control conditions while workers inserted bud grafts into young 18″ high citrus trees. For both trials, workers under the experimental condition reported significantly less severe symptoms than workers under control conditions. The order in which the intervention was given, however, appeared to result in variations in productivity. We conclude that the introduction of frequent, brief rest breaks may improve symptoms for workers engaged in strenuous work tasks. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Back injuries are the most common and costly of work-related injuries in agriculture. According to the study, hand-harvest work is the most physically demanding and intense period during the annual wine-grape crop cycle.
