Abstract

The proton's internal structure is characterized not only by its charge and magnetic distribution but also by its mechanical and mass properties, which are encoded in the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These properties provide insights into the spatial distributions of energy, pressure, and shear forces within the proton. Understanding the proton's internal structure, including properties such as its mechanical and mass radii, is essential for unraveling the complex interplay between quarks and gluons that govern its stability and dynamics. In this study, we investigate the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of the proton, particularly the D-term, which encodes key information about the internal stress distribution, pressure, and shear forces within the nucleon. Using a model for skewness-dependent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) constructed from the double-distribution representation, we extract the quark contribution to the $ D(t) $ GFF of the EMT by analyzing available data on Compton form factors (CFFs). We then employ this extracted GFF to explore the mechanical properties of the proton, including its mechanical and mass radii, as well as the internal pressure and shear force distributions. Abstract

Undulators are X-ray sources widely used in synchrotron storage rings and free-electron laser facilities. With the commercial availability of low-temperature superconductors, a new type of undulator was born, the superconducting undulator (SCU). In this context, the industrial cooperation between the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Bilfinger Nuclear and Energy Transition GmbH started more than 15 years ago. Since then, many projects have been successfully completed, leading to the production of the world's leading full-scale commercial SCUs based on conduction cooling. Starting with the SCU15, the first of its kind installed SCU providing light to a beamline, followed by the SCU20 installed and still in operation at the Karlsruhe Research Accelerator. The successful realisation of such SCUs has required the simultaneous development of appropriate measurement facilities such as CASPER I and CASPER II.

Abstract

Kinesiophobia, the fear of movement, can significantly impede an individuals ability to engage in daily activities. This fear often stems from past traumatic experiences or witnessing others in pain, leading to an increased fear of injury. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia among Iranian post-surgery patients. A methodological study conducted in 2023 involved a sample of 400 post-surgery patients selected through convenience sampling. The translated scale underwent psychometric evaluation, including network analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis for construct validity, as well as assessments for convergent and discriminant validity. Internal consistency of the scale was also assessed. The mean age of the participants was 44.38 (SD = 13.49) years and the majority of them (77.8%) were women. Exploratory factor analysis with Promax rotation identified two factors explaining 60.28% of the variance, comprising 17 items. The final model was confirmed after necessary adjustments in confirmatory factor analysis. Both convergent and discriminant validity were established, and alpha and omega coefficients of the subscales were above 0.7. The Persian version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia showed robust psychometric properties among Iranian post-surgery patients, serving as a valuable tool for evaluating and addressing kinesiophobia in this population. These findings enhance the understanding and management of kinesiophobia within the Iranian healthcare context.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The Fear of Pain Questionnaire (FOPQ) is a self-report tool designed to measure an individuals fear of pain (FOP). While the Persian version of the FOPQ (FOPQ-P) has been developed, its validity and reliability have not yet been assessed in the Iranian context. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the FOPQ-P among Iranian patients after surgery. METHODS: A methodological study was conducted in 2023 involving 400 post-surgery patients selected with a convenience sampling. The FOPQ was translated into Persian, and its psychometric properties were analyzed using network analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), as well as assessments of convergent and discriminant validity. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbachs alpha, McDonalds Omega, average inter-item correlation coefficient, Composite Reliability, and Maximal Reliability. RESULTS: The EFA results with Promax and Kaiser Normalization rotation identified two factors that explained 54.32% of the variance, comprising seven items. The CFA confirmed the models validity. Both convergent and discriminant validity were established. The reliability analyses showed that Cronbachs alpha, McDonalds omega, composite reliability, and MaxR for all constructs were above 0.7. Additionally, the average inter-item correlation coefficient was greater than 0.5, indicating strong internal consistency and construct reliability. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that the FOPQ-P possesses a valid structure and was acceptable reliability in patients cultural context of Iran post-surgery, making it a suitable instrument for measuring fear of pain in this population.

Abstract

This paper presents a deep learning-based approach for hourly power outage probability prediction within census tracts encompassing a utility company's service territory. Two distinct deep learning models, conditional Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and unconditional MLP, were developed to forecast power outage probabilities, leveraging a rich array of input features gathered from publicly available sources including weather data, weather station locations, power infrastructure maps, socio-economic and demographic statistics, and power outage records. Given a one-hour-ahead weather forecast, the models predict the power outage probability for each census tract, taking into account both the weather prediction and the location's characteristics. The deep learning models employed different loss functions to optimize prediction performance. Abstract

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Fear-avoidance beliefs (FAB) play a crucial role in the treatment outcomes of post-surgery patients. These beliefs can lead to activity avoidance, increased pain, and decreased quality of life. Therefore, accurately measuring these beliefs in Iranian patients is of significant importance. The Fear-Avoidance Belief Questionnaire (FABQ) is a patient-reported questionnaire that evaluates individuals FAB. Since the validity and reliability of the Persian version of FABQ (FABQ-P) have not been assessed based on the Iranian population and sociocultural contexts, the current study has been implemented to determine the reliability and validity of the FABQ-P among Iranian post-operative patients by translation and psychometric properties. METHODS: This methodological study conducted in 2023, a sample of 400 patients who had undergone surgery were selected using a convenience sampling method. The scale used in the study was translated and its psychometric properties were evaluated through network analysis and assessments of construct validity (including exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis), convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Additionally, the study assessed the internal consistency of the scale. RESULTS: The MLEFA results with Promax and Kaiser Normalization rotation yielded two factors explaining 57.91% of the variance, encompassing 13 items. Also, the model was approved by CFA. Convergent and discriminant validity have been confirmed through the following criteria: Average Variance Extracted (AVE) exceeding 0.5, Composite Reliability (CR) surpassing 0.7, and Heterotrait-Monotrait Ratio of Correlations (HTMT) equating to 0.597. As for reliability, Cronbachs alpha, composite reliability (CR), and MaxR for all constructs were greater than 0.7, demonstrating good internal consistency. CONCLUSION: As demonstrated by the results, the FABQ-P has a satisfactory level of reliability along with authentic validity according to the sociocultural contexts of Iranian post-operative patients.

21. In the Line of Fire: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Job Burnout Among Nurses

Abstract

Using a systematic review and meta-analysis, this study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on job burnout among nurses. We review healthcare articles following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and identify the main aspects and factors of burnout among nurses during the pandemic. Using the Maslach Burnout questionnaire, we searched PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, three open-access databases, for relevant sources measuring emotional burnout, personal failure, and nurse depersonalization. Two reviewers extract and screen data from the sources and evaluate the risk of bias. The analysis reveals that 2.75% of nurses experienced job burnout during the pandemic, with a 95% confidence interval and rates varying from 1.87% to 7.75%. These findings emphasize the need for interventions to address the pandemic's effect on job burnout among nurses and enhance their well-being and healthcare quality. We recommend considering individual, organizational, and contextual factors influencing healthcare workers' burnout. Future research should focus on identifying effective interventions to lower burnout in nurses and other healthcare professionals during pandemics and high-stress situations.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

Hemodialysis is a conservative treatment for end-stage renal disease. It has various complications which negatively affect quality of life (QOL). This study aimed to examine the relationship between fatigue, pruritus, and thirst distress (TD) with QOL of patients receiving hemodialysis, while also considering the mediating role of treatment adherence (TA). This cross-sectional study was carried out in 2023 on 411 patients receiving hemodialysis. Participants were consecutively recruited from several dialysis centers in Iran. Data were collected using a demographic information form, the Fatigue Assessment Scale, the Thirst Distress Scale, the Pruritus Severity Scale, the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey, and the modified version of the Greek Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire for Hemodialysis Patients. Covariance-based structural equation modeling was used for data analysis. The structural model and hypothesis testing results showed that all hypotheses were supported in this study. QOL had a significant inverse association with fatigue, pruritus, and TD and a significant positive association with TA. TA partially mediated the association of QOL with fatigue, pruritus, and TD, denoting that it helped counteract the negative association of these complications on QOL. This model explained 68.5% of the total variance of QOL. Fatigue, pruritus, and TD have a negative association with QOL among patients receiving hemodialysis, while TA reduces these negative associations. Therefore, TA is greatly important to manage the associations of these complications and improve patient outcomes. Healthcare providers need to assign high priority to TA improvement among these patients to reduce their fatigue, pruritus, and TD and improve their QOL. Further studies are necessary to determine the most effective strategies for improving TA and reducing the burden of complications in this patient population.

34. An interaction network approach predicts protein cage architectures in bionanotechnology

Abstract

Protein nanoparticles play pivotal roles in many areas of bionanotechnology, including drug delivery, vaccination and diagnostics. These technologies require control over the distinct particle morphologies that protein nanocontainers can adopt during self-assembly from their constituent protein components. The geometric construction principle of virus-derived protein cages is by now fairly well understood by analogy to viral protein shells in terms of Caspar and Klug's quasi-equivalence principle. However, many artificial, or genetically modified, protein containers violate this principle, because identical protein subunits do not interact in quasi-equivalent ways, leading to gaps in the particle surface. We introduce a method that exploits information on the local interactions between the assembly units, called capsomers, to infer the geometric construction principle of these nanoparticle architectures. The predictive power of this approach is demonstrated here for a prominent system in nanotechnology, the AaLS pentamer. Our method not only rationalises hitherto discovered cage structures, but also predicts geometrically viable options that have not yet been observed. The classification of nanoparticle architecture based on the geometric properties of the interaction network closes a gap in our current understanding of protein container structure and can be widely applied in protein nanotechnology, paving the way to programmable control over particle polymorphism., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures

35. Psychometric properties of the pain anxiety symptom scale among postoperative patients in Amol, Iran.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: So far, the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Pain Anxiety Symptom Scale have not been assessed in Iran. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the Pain Anxiety Symptom Scale among a group of Iranian patients in Amol. METHODS: This methodological study was conducted in 2023 with a sample of 400 postoperative patients from Amol, Iran, selected through convenience sampling. The dataset was divided into two groups of 200 for exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Construct validity was assessed using maximum likelihood exploratory factor analysis with Promax rotation, supported by Horns parallel analysis and network analysis to visualize item relationships. Confirmatory factor analysis, convergent and discriminant validity was performed on the second dataset. Reliability was evaluated through various statistical measures, including Cronbachs alpha, McDonalds omega, average inter-item correlation coefficient, composite reliability, and maximal reliability (MaxR). RESULTS: Among the 400 participants, the mean age was 44.38 years (SD = 13.49), with 152 (46.1%) being women and 178 (53.9%) men. Most participants (n = 268, 81.2%) had an education level lower than a diploma, and 93 individuals (28.2%) reported a history of surgery. The results of exploratory factor analysis with Promax rotation developed two factors accounting for 66.29% of the variance comprising 15 items. Also, after necessary modifications during confirmatory factor analysis, the final model was approved. As for reliability, the Cronbachs alpha, composite reliability, and MaxR for all constructs were greater than 0.7, demonstrating good internal consistency and construct reliability. CONCLUSION: According to the results, the Persian version of the Pain Anxiety Symptom Scale has a valid structure and acceptable reliability. This scale can be used by health professionals in many ways.

INTRODUCTION: The 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) is commonly used to measure stress levels in postoperative patients, as research shows that high levels of stress can affect postoperative outcomes. By using the PSS-10, healthcare providers can understand patients psychological well-being before and after surgery, helping improve recovery and overall health. This study focuses on assessing the reliability and validity of the 10-item Persian version of the PSS (PSS-10-P) in postoperative patients. METHODS: In a methodological study conducted between October to December 2023, a sample of 400 patients who had undergone surgery in 17 Shahrivar Hospital, Amol, Iran were selected using a convenience sampling method. The PSS-10 scale utilized in the study was translated, and its psychometric properties were evaluated through assessments of construct validity, including exploratory (n = 200) and confirmatory (n = 200) factor analysis, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Furthermore, the study examined the internal consistency of the scale to ensure its reliability. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 44.38 (SD= 13.49) years. The results of exploratory factor analysis with Promax rotation extracted two factors accounting for 83.82% of the variance comprising 10 items. After necessary modifications during CFA, the final model was approved. As for reliability, the Cronbachs alpha, CR, and MaxR for all constructs were greater than 0.7, demonstrating good internal consistency and construct reliability. CONCLUSION: According to these results, the Persian version of PSS-10 has a valid structure and acceptable reliability. This scale can be used by health professionals in many ways.

Abstract

In this study, we systematically investigated the mechanical responses of monolayer molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The tensile behavior of trigonal prismatic phase (2H phase) MoTe2 under uniaxial strain was simulated in the armchair and zigzag directions. We also investigated the crack formation and propagation in both armchair and zigzag directions at 10K and 300K to understand the fracture behavior of monolayer MoTe2 at different temperatures. The MD simulations show clean cleavage for the armchair direction, and the cracks were numerous and scattered in the case of the zigzag direction. Finally, we investigated the effect of temperature on Young's modulus and fracture stress of monolayer MoTe2. The results show that at a strain rate of 10^-4 ps^-1, the fracture strength of monolayer MoTe2 in the armchair and zigzag directions at 10K is 16.33 GPa (11.43 N/m) and 13.71 GPa (9.46 N/m) under a 24% and 18% fracture strain, respectively. The fracture strength of monolayer MoTe2 in the armchair and zigzag direction at 600K is 10.81 GPa (7.56 N/m) and 10.13 GPa (7.09 N/m) under a 12.5% and 12.47% fracture strain, respectively., Comment: 22 Pages, 7 Figures

43. How Perception Relates to Student Utilization of College Campus Counseling Services

Abstract

Objective: Examine how student demographics and perception of on-campus counseling service availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality is related to utilization. Participants: A total of 262 students from 49 Georgia (U.S.) higher education institutions. Methods: A logistic regression examined student perception of on-campus counseling services and associations with service utilization, controlling for covariates. Results: (1) Non-heterosexual students were more likely to use on-campus counseling services than heterosexual students, (2) students in rural areas were more likely to utilize services than students in urban areas, (3) insured students had higher odds of utilizing services than uninsured students, and (4) higher ratings of perceived accessibility were associated with likelier service use. Conclusions: The perception of accessibility was significantly associated with higher odds of on-campus service use. Thus, a better understanding of student perception of on-campus counseling center accessibility is warranted.

Abstract

This work highlights the potential of earth-abundant mixed-metal oxide catalysts for the acid-based oxygen evolution reaction. These catalysts offer numerous combinations of metal-centre compositions, which can enhance catalytic activity and stability compared to precious-metal-based catalysts commonly used today. Despite substantial research in this field, there is a need for new methods and approaches to accelerate the exploration of these materials. In this study, we present a comprehensive approach to designing, developing, and implementing a self-driving laboratory to optimize the electrodeposition synthesis of amorphous mixed-metal oxide catalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction. We particularly emphasize the development of methodologies to address experimental variability. We investigate crucial parameters and considerations when transitioning from manual bench-top synthesis and evaluation to automation and machine learning guided optimization. We address both experimental and optimization algorithm considerations in the presence of experimental variability. To illustrate our approach, we demonstrate the optimization of CoFeMnPbOx electrodeposited catalyst materials through multiple campaigns. Abstract

In this paper we present a new method for deriving It\^{o} stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs) from delayed chemical master equations (DCMEs). Considering alternative formulations of SDDEs that can be derived from the same DCME, we prove that they are equivalent both in distribution, and in sample paths they produce. This allows us to formulate an algorithmic approach to deriving equivalent It\^{o} SDDEs with a smaller number of noise variables, which increases the computational speed of simulating stochastic delayed systems. The new method is illustrated on a simple model of two interacting species, and it shows excellent agreement with the results of direct stochastic simulations, while also demonstrating a much superior speed of performance., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures
