Background: The search for substances that can overcome microorganisms' resistance and enhance the antimicrobial activity of given products has attracted the attention of researchers. Eucalyptus wood vinegar (WV) is a promising product for developing alternative antimicrobials. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate whether the production of WV in the co-pyrolysis of eucalyptus wood with aromatic herbs would incorporate compounds from them into WV and if that would enhance its antimicrobial action. Methodology: WV was produced alone and through co-pyrolysis with marjoram (Origanum majorana), Peruvian oregano (Origanum vulgare), rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), and Turkish oregano (Origanum onites) at a proportion of 25% of herbs to the bone-dry wood weight. The antimicrobial effects were assessed against strains of gram-negative and -positive bacteria, and Candida glabrata. Microorganisms' colony growth in agar had their absorbances recorded after inoculation and incubation. Chemical characterization of the new products was performed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Results: After coproduction, there were relevant chemical changes concerning the original WV. Thymol, for instance, was incorporated into the WV through co-pyrolysis with marjoram, Peruvian and Turkish oregano, and thyme. The coproducts were more efficient than the WV produced only with wood, with thyme-incorporated products having the highest efficiency. This can be attributed to the increase and incorporation of the substances after coproduction, and particularly the role of thymol in enhancing the antimicrobial action. Conclusion: Given the results, the co-production of WV with eucalyptus wood and aromatic herbs has the potential to provide alternative antimicrobial products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flocculation using natural plant-based biopolymers from Moringa oleifera seeds and Acacia mearnsii flocculant as Tanfloc® (TSG) has emerged as an efficient strategy for microalgae biomass harvesting. This study optimized the recovery process of Nannochloropsis oculata by varying flocculant concentration, sedimentation time, and culture pH. Results revealed that 1.2 mg.L−1 of TSG at pH 8.9 achieved optimal conditions, although TSG proved effective across different pH ranges. Alkaline flocculation (ALK) also enhanced microalgae harvesting, yielding a high harvesting efficiency (>96%) within 30 minutes of sedimentation. Both methods achieved a concentration factor exceeding 20. However, the use of ALK resulted in reduced lipid and carbohydrate content compared to the control condition. Carotenoid levels showed no significant difference. TSG influenced lipid extraction but not fatty acid quality or carbohydrate extraction. Importantly, the residual medium from TSG flocculation could sustain subsequent cultivation cycles without nutrient supplementation, presenting a cost-effective solution for microalgae cultivation and harvesting. Rationale Brazil is the largest producer of sugar cane bioethanol in the world. Isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is the technique of choice to certify the origin/raw materials for ethanol production, but the lack of certified reference materials (CRMs) for accurate measurements of δ13C values traceable to Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB), the international zero point for 13C/12C measurements, certified and compatible with gas chromatography (GC)/IRMS instruments may compromise the accuracy of δ13C determinations. Methods We evaluated the influence of methods for the calibration and normalization of raw δ13C values of ethanol samples. Samples were analyzed by GC/C/IRMS using two different GC columns. Different substances were used as isotopic standards for the working gas calibration. The δ13C values obtained with the three methods of normalization were statistically compared with those obtained with elemental analyzer (EA)/IRMS, since the δ13C results obtained using EA are traceable to VPDB via the NBS 22 reference material. Results It was observed that both the isotopic reference material for CO2 calibration and the GC column have a major effect on the δ13C measurements, leading to a bias of almost 2-3 ‰ in the δ13C values. All three methods of normalization were equivalent in performance, enabling an improvement in the GC/C/IRMS accuracy, compared with the EA/IRMS reference values for the samples. Conclusions All the methods of CO2 calibration, chromatography and normalization presented in this work demonstrated several sources of traceability and accuracy loss for the determination of δ13C values in ethanol fuel samples by GC/C/IRMS. This work has also shown the importance of using proper CRMs traceable to VPBD that should be compatible and certified using GC/C/IRMS, ideally in a wide range of δ13C values. The use of CO2 as a massive and polarizable drift gas is shown to greatly improve peak-to-peak resolution ( Rp-p), as compared with N2, for the separation of disaccharides in a Synapt G2 traveling wave ion mobility cell. Near or baseline Rp-p was achieved for three pairs of sodiated molecules of disaccharide isomers, that is, cellobiose and sucrose ( Rp-p = 0.76), maltose and sucrose ( Rp-p = 1.04), and maltose and lactose ( Rp-p = 0.74). Ion mobility mass spectrometry using CO2 as the drift gas offers therefore an attractive alternative for fast and efficient separation of isomeric disaccharides.
