Background: Uterine fibroid (UF) is a common tumor of the female reproductive system. Though most of the women with fibroids are asymptomatic, approximately 30% of them can mention about some severe symptoms like abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, anemia, back pain, urinary frequency and even infertility etc. Generally, among the patients with uterine fibroids, prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is found. But, the impact of vitamin D on reduction of the sizes the uterine fibroids are still unknown. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of vitamin D supplementation among the women with uterine fibroid in different age groups. Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in the department of Radiology & Imaging, BSMMU, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from January 2020 to December 2020. In total 75 women with uterine fibroid were enrolled in this study as study population. Before data collection proper written consents were taken from all the participants. Along with the data regarding fibroids and vitamin D status, all the demographic and clinical data were collected and analyzed. In data collection, a predesigned questioner was used. All data were processed, analyzed and disseminated by using MS Excel and SPSS version 23.0 program as per necessity. Results: In this study, in assessing the fibroid’s sizes of several age group patients, between baseline and follow-up we found that, at baseline, in 20-30, 31-45 and >45 year’s age groups, the mean ±SD sizes of fibroids were 3.32±0.46, 3.91±0.50 and 4.05±0.51 cm respectively. On the other hand, at follow-up stage in those groups the mean ±SD sizes of fibroids were found as 2.64 ±0.40, 3.66±0.48 and 3.5±0.47 cm respectively. Presence of the artery of Desproges-Gotteron is extremely rare. It has seldom been mentioned in the literature as well. The authors have dealt with a case of a dural arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of conus medullaris fed by the artery of Desproges-Gotteron in a young female of 19 years. The patient presented with a tingling sensation of lower limbs, progressive difficulty walking, and incontinence of the bladder. There was weakness in all groups of muscle of both lower limbs and definite sensory level on examination. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple flow voids at the level of conus medullaris. Spinal digital subtraction angiography (DSA) revealed dural AVM at the level of conus. The patient underwent transarterial embolization with 30% Endocryl(n-butyl cyanoacrylate) in two stages, and repeated spinal DSA revealed no evidence of residual AVM. Patient's neurology gradually improved. Almost 2 years down the line, the follow-up revealed gradual but complete motor and sensory deficits recovery except for occasional burning pain in lower limbs. Spinal AVM supplied by the artery of Desproges-Gotteron is a unique variation. Moreover, the authors believe that it is the first reported case in Bangladesh.

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging is a very useful diagnostic tool for the detection of abnormalities of injured knee joint. Objective: This present study was performed to see the different abnormalities of injured knee joint detected by MRI among adult patients. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Radiology and Imaging at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSSMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from January to June 2021 for a period of six months. The patients in the age group of equal or more than 18 years with both male and female who were visiting Department of Orthopaedics at BSMMU, Dhaka with history of knee injuries were subjected to MRI were selected as study population. MRI findings of the knee joint were analyzed for the presence of any signal changes or lesions of varying severity for the structures of menisci, cartilage, bone marrow, tendons and ligaments of injured knee joint. Results: A total number of 65 cases of knee joints were analyzed. The mean with the SD of age of the study population was 35.34±13.371. The left knee (60.0%) was more involved than right knee (40.0%). The lesion in femur and tibia were found in 10(15.4%) cases and 8(12.3%) cases respectively. Out of 65 knee joints there were 41 joints were found the tear of anterior cruciate ligament. The complete, interstial tear in the anterior cruciate ligaments were 26(40.0%) and 15(23.1%) knee joints respectively. However, anterior cruciate ligaments of 24(36.9%) knee joints were found normal. Medial meniscus (36.9%) was more involved than lateral meniscus (18.5%). Conclusion: In conclusion young adult male are more commonly affected their left knee joint with the tearing of complete tear of anterior cruciate ligaments and involvement of medial meniscus. The incidence of renal disease is increasing at an alarming rate in Bangladesh. Malnutrition is directly correlated with the prevalence with these diseases. A total of 120 dialysis patients from both sexes having mean age 45±13. 79 years undergoing hemodialysis were enrolled for the study in Khulna city, Bangladesh. Information regarding disease history and associated co morbidities were collected from patient’s files. The personal information, prevalent vices, exercise behavior, dietary modifications and clinical and health status of the patients were recorded by using pre-tested questionnaire. Etiology of the chronic renal disease, complications and biochemical parameters were documented from the case files. Renal failure was more prevalent among male than in female. Diabetes mellitus (31.67%) were the most common etiology for chronic renal failure. Pallor of eyes was the most prevailing sign and the most common symptoms are breathlessness (98%), oliguria (88%), anorexia (67%) and nausea (60%). Nutritional status was assessed by anthropometric measurements using body mass index (BMI), mid arm circumference (MAC) and waist hip ratio (WHR). According to BMI, 43% male are grouped in normal category whereas majority of females (52%) are underweight with no overweight female respondents. 80% male had low adequacy of energy whereas all the female patients had adequacy of energy, carbohydrate and protein on low level. Dietary data was obtained by using 24-hour dietary recall and food frequency questionnaire. Actual intake of calories, protein, fats and minerals was lower than the recommended intake for hemodialysis patients. More than 50 percent of patient on hemodialysis were at risk of malnutrition. Around 32% respondents included fruits as per doctor’s advice whereas water and salted foods were restricted to three fourth of patients to protect kidney. Proper assessment of nutritional status, nutritional management and dietary modification can play a central role in preventing malnutrition of hemodialysis patients. Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. Background Endophytic fungi play a vital role in plant defense system by secreting various antimicrobial agents. To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the endophytic fungi of the mangrove plant Heritiera fomes (Buch. -Ham), plants were collected from the Sundarbans, Bangladesh. The endophytic fungi were subsequently isolated and identified. Results Fifty-five endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves, root, and bark of H. fomes (Buch. -Ham). Genomic DNA was extracted for PCR (polymerase chain reaction) by specific primers to multiply ITS region and sequences were determined. Nucleotide sequence data were submitted to the Genbank and accession number for each fungal strain was obtained. Antimicrobial activity of the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanolic extracts of eleven species from both fermentation and mycelium, respectively, were analyzed by microtiter plate-based antimicrobial assay incorporating resazurin as an indicator of cell growth against two Gram-positive bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus NCTC 12981 and Micrococcus luteus NCTC 7508, two Gram-negative bacteria namely Escherichia coli NCTC 12241 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCTC 12903, and a fungus Candida albicans ATCC 90028. All the endophytic fungal extracts exhibited antimicrobial activities against more than one-tested pathogenic microbial strains. Overall, methanolic extracts showed greater activity than EtOAc extracts. Pseudopestalotiopsis camelliae-sinensis, Pestalotiopsis microspora, and Penicillium copticola were the most active endophytic fungal strains and exhibited strong inhibitory activity against the microorganisms under investigation and their MIC values ranged from 0.0024 to 5.0 mg/mL. Methanolic extracts of both P. camelliae-sinensis and P. microspora showed the highest antibacterial activity (MIC value of 0.0024 mg/mL) against P. aeruginosa NCTC 12903. Conclusion This study showed that the isolated and identified endophytic fungi from H. fomes (Buch. -Ham) could be potential sources of antimicrobial agents.

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a major health problem in Bangladesh. Diabetes mellitus is the most common cause of this pathology. Among individuals with CKD, vitamin D deficiency is very much prevalent. But there are not enough studies comparing vitamin D status of diabetic and nondiabetic CKD patients. So, this study aimed to compare the 25(OH)D levels between these two groups. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional comparative study was carried out in the Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Nephrology, Chittagong Medical College Hospital from June 2013 to May 2014. Fifty (50) diabetic CKD patients and fifty (50) age-sex matched nondiabetic CKD patients of 18-85 years fulfilling the required enrolment criteria were purposively selected to form two comparing groups. For optical see-through augmented reality (AR), a new method for measuring the perceived three-dimensional location of virtual objects is presented, where participants verbally report a virtual object’s location relative to both a vertical and horizontal grid. The method is tested with a small (1.95 × 1.95 × 1.95 cm) virtual object at distances of 50 to 80 cm, viewed through a Microsoft HoloLens 1st generation AR display. Two experiments examine two different virtual object designs, whether turning in a circle between reported object locations disrupts HoloLens tracking, and whether accuracy errors, including a rightward bias and underestimated depth, might be due to systematic errors that are restricted to a particular display. Turning in a circle did not disrupt HoloLens tracking, and testing with a second display did not suggest systematic errors restricted to a particular display. Instead, the experiments are consistent with the hypothesis that, when looking downwards at a horizontal plane, HoloLens 1st generation displays exhibit a systematic rightward perceptual bias. Precision analysis suggests that the method could measure the perceived location of a virtual object within an accuracy of less than 1 mm.

Anemia and thyroid disorders are global health issues that affect all ages but are more apparent in women. In this case, some serological components responsible for IDA and TSH disorders in women have been found actively regulated through a complex steroidal-calcitriol mediated pathway. This research has been investigated the correlation between Calcitriol and the serological components responsible for IDA and TSH disorders in childbearing and non-child-bearing women of different health conditions. Experimental sampling from 452 women suffering from both IDA and TSH disorders were taken, aged between 0 and 70 years. Serological parameters, such as iron, total iron-binding capacity and ferritin, were assessed for IDA profiling, whereas thyroid-stimulating hormone and free thyroxin were for TSH profiling based on the individual’s serum calcitriol status. The resulted serological data were interpreted using sophisticated computer programming language and algorithms for quantitative biochemical analysis. This paper presents an experimental study on performance of a domestic vapor compression refrigeration system using two different refrigerants, R600a (Isobutane) and R134a (Tetrafluoroethane). Two different compressors were used in this experiment and the input power of both compressors was 270W. In this study, the COP was calculated for each refrigerant at steady state condition. The data taking apparatus were calibrated before conducting the experiment. The result shows, when the refrigerator was equipped with the hydrocarbon (HC) type (designed for R600A) compressor, the COP raised by 12% compared to the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) type compressor (designed for R134a). According to this comparative analysis and from the environmental, ecological and health points of view, R600a is recommended to use as it is more beneficial than R134a.

The research was conducted for the assessment of genetic diversity using both morphological and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis of twelve guava (Psidium guajava L.) varieties growing in Bangladesh. Morphological characterization of guava varieties showed a wide range of variation. The highest variability was observed between Poly and Jelly varieties.Polymerase chain reaction with 5 arbitrary 10-mer and 3 arbitrary 12- mer RAPD primers produced a total of 50 bands of which 75.23 percent were polymorphic. The highest percentage of polymorphic loci (100%) was observed for primer A and the lowest (50%) for A03 primer. The UPGMA dendrogram revealed the segregation pattern and the difference of evolutionary changes. Guava varieties were separated into two main groups, one of them was made up of Chineese, Jelly, Kazi, Apple, L-49, Local-2 and Local-3. The other one was made up of Local-1, Poly, Kashi, Thai and Bombay. The highest genetic distance between Apple and Kazi peyara indicate that these varieties might be interesting in breeding programme for improving trait of interest. ROCK, one of the downstream regulators of Rho, controls actomyosin cytoskeleton organization, stress fiber formation, smooth muscle contraction, and cell migration. ROCK plays an important role in the pathologies of cerebral and coronary vasospasm, hypertension, cancer, and arteriosclerosis. Pharmacological-induced systemic inhibition of ROCK affects both the pathological and physiological functions of Rho-kinase, resulting in hypotension, increased heart rate, decreased lymphocyte count, and eventually cardiovascular collapse. To overcome the adverse effects of systemic ROCK inhibition, we developed a bioreductive prodrug of a ROCK inhibitor, fasudil, that functions selectively under hypoxic conditions. By masking fasudil's active site with a bioreductive 4-nitrobenzyl group, we synthesized a prodrug of fasudil that is inactive in normoxia. Reduction of the protecting group initiated by hypoxia reveals an electron-donating substituent that leads to fragmentation of the parent molecule. Under normoxia the fasudil prodrug displayed significantly reduced activity against ROCK compared to its parent compound, but under severe hypoxia the prodrug was highly effective in suppressing ROCK activity. Under hypoxia the prodrug elicited an antiproliferative effect on disease-afflicted pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells and pulmonary arterial endothelial cells. The prodrug displayed a long plasma half-life, remained inactive in the blood, and produced no drop in systemic blood pressure when compared with fasudil-treated controls. Due to its selective nature, our hypoxia-activated fasudil prodrug could be used to treat diseases where tissue-hypoxia or hypoxic cells are the pathological basis of the disease.

In the era of secure communication and the constantly changing pattern of internet applications, traditional packet classification methods fail to achieve the accuracy needed for diverse network management functions. Recently Machine Learning (ML) techniques have been used to design viable packet classification solutions. However, due to the complexity and dynamic feature of internet traffic, efficient packet classification is still challenging for various machine learning algorithms. In this paper, we propose the adoption of feature selection methods through dimensionality reduction to enhance the classifiers' performance. We evaluated the performance of four well-known classifiers, including K-nearest neighbour (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Decision Trees (DT), and Logistic Regression (LR) with and without feature selection. We used two feature selection methods, including principal component analysis and Autoencoder. Experimental analysis is performed on real network traffic datasets with binary and multi-class categories. We assessed each classifier's performance using precision, recall, f-score, accuracy, and ROC. Experimental results show that the Precision, Recall, and F-score for the Multi-class problem are improved by 4.7 %, 6%, and 9%, respectively, after adopting either PCA or Autoencoder methods. The classification accuracy is also improved by up to 13%. We can also conclude that Autoencoder performed better for the KNN and LR, while PCA achieved comparable results for both the SVM and DT classifiers.

Usable x-ray vision has long been a goal in augmented reality research and development. X-ray vision, or the ability to view and understand information presented through an opaque barrier, would be imminently useful across a variety of domains. Unfortunately, however, the effect of x-ray vision on situation awareness, an operator’s understanding of a task or environment, has not been significantly studied. This is an important question; if x-ray vision does not increase situation awareness, of what use is it? Thus, we have developed an x-ray vision system, in order to investigate situation awareness in the context of action space distances.

Background Subjective wellbeing in terms of objective outcome can be useful to determine the level of progress in clinical practice as well as research studies in Bangladesh. Besides, cultural understanding of well-being for Bangladeshi population is also equally important to report. A valid Bangla version of the five-item WHO Well-being Index can be a suitable measure to achieve the purposes. Therefore, the present study aimed at validating the WHO-5 Well-being Index for general population in Bangladesh. Methods After following the standard procedures for translation, back-translation, and committee translation, the initial Bangla version of the scale was developed and pretested. Based on the feedback during pretesting, a slight modification was made and the final version was developed. This final version was administered to 269 participants of different socioeconomic backgrounds to find out the reliability and validity of the scale from March 2019 to May 2019. The data analysis was conducted using SPSS 24. Results The scale demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.754) and test-retest reliability (r = 0.713), divergent validity (r = −0.443, p < 0.01 with the Bangla version of Perceived Stress Scale-10) and convergent validity (r = 0.542, p < 0.01 with the Bangla version of Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale). The data also yielded one-factor structure for the scale in exploratory factor analysis explaining 38.68% of total variance. The factor-structure was further supported in the confirmatory factor analysis (χ2 = 295.852, χ2/df = 2.017, RMSEA = 0.062, CFI = 0.986, TLI = 0.964, and SRMR = 0.0255). Conclusion The findings suggested the Bangla version of the WHO-5 Well-being Index is a psychometrically valid and reliable tool for general adult population in Bangladeshi when it comes to measuring subjective well-being both in clinical practice and research studies.

With technological advancement, photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are effectively used to design miniaturized, flexible, and efficient biosensors. This paper proposes an exposed core PCF biosensor based on widely known surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomena. An external sensing mechanism is followed to characterize the sensing performance within the refractive index (RI) range between 1.28 and 1.40. Metal strip (gold (Au) and titanium dioxide (TiO2)) is deposited on the outer surface only along the four channels instead of the entire surface, which could decrease the difficulties associated with the metal deposition on the entire circular surface. Simulating the sensor using finite element method based COMSOL Multiphysics software, we find tremendous amplitude sensitivity of 7420.69 RIU−1 and wavelength sensitivity of 87,000 nm/RIU. In addition, the sensor offers the highest resolution of 7.7×10−6 RIU, the figure of merit of 1011.63 RIU−1, signal to noise ratio of 10.05 dB, the detection accuracy of 0.016598 nm−1, and detection limit of 102.23 nm. However, the promising sensing performance indicates that the proposed sensor could be implemented effectively to detect different biological and chemical substances.

In this article a graphene based direct-fed multiband planar internal antenna (PIA) for wireless communication is proposed. Graphene, one of the most disruptive materials, is used to enhance the performance of this antenna. Graphene based antennas present noteworthy perfections for the maximum parameters than copper based antennas. Designing and simulating in CST over 0 to 3 THz, it is observed that the PIA indicates the highest efficiency over the different types of graphene based patch antennas. It performs with almost 98 % efficiency.

There is a growing interest in preclinical research to consider low-dose metronomic chemotherapy as antiangiogenic cancer treatment. Oral metronomic therapy, in particular, has shown much promise with its ease of daily administration and higher therapeutics window. In that regard, we developed oral pemetrexed using the physical complex with the bile acid enhancers (DCK). In a caco-2 permeability study, the oral pemetrexed/DCK complex had significantly higher drug uptake, and inhibited efflux transporter activity as well. We further observed that the mechanism of oral drug uptake was related to transcellular along with bile acid transporter mediated pathways. The oral administration of drug complex in rats revealed high bioavailability (22.37%) and extended mean residence time. Using SCC7 and A549 xenograft models, we demonstrated that antitumor effects from daily oral metronomic pemetrexed significantly reduced tumor in a dose-dependent manner. The antitumor activity of oral pemetrexed/DCK complex plus cisplatin was superior to both monotherapies. The xenograft study also revealed that oral metronomic therapy markedly reduced microvessel density, proliferation and increased apoptosis in the tumor tissues. Oral metronomic doses were significantly correlated with the elevation of plasma deoxyuridine level, an essential biomarker for pemetrexed therapy. One-month toxicity study confirmed that daily dosing of oral pemetrexed is safe by investigating apoptosis in the gut tissues from mice. Moreover, we analyzed different biochemical parameters and enzymes from the blood to prove that our newly developed oral pemetrexed complex is well tolerated.
