We present an analysis of 8 JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument 5.6 micron images with 5sigma depths of ~0.1uJy. We detect 2854 sources within our combined area of 18.4 sq.arcmin -- a >4x increase in source density over earlier IRAC channel 3 data. We compute the MIRI 5.6um number counts including an analysis of the field-to-field variation. Relative to earlier published MIRI 5.6micron counts, our counts have a more pronounced knee, at roughly 2\,$\mu$Jy. The location and amplitude of the counts at the knee are consistent with the Cowley et al. (2018) model predictions, although these models tend to overpredict the counts below the knee. In areas of overlap, 84% of the MIRI sources have a counterpart in the COSMOS2020 catalog. These MIRI sources have redshifts that are mostly in the z~0.5-2, with a tail out to z~5. They are predominantly moderate to low stellar masses $10^8-10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$) main sequence star-forming galaxies suggesting that with $\approx$2hr exposures, MIRI can reach well below $M^*$ at cosmic noon and reach higher mass systems out to z~5. Nearly 70% of the COSMOS2020 sources in areas of overlap now have a data point at 5.6micron (rest-frame near-IR at cosmic noon) which allows for more accurate stellar population parameter estimates. Finally, we discover 31 MIRI-bright sources not in COSMOS2020. A cross-match with IRAC channel 1 suggests that 10-20% of these are likely lower mass (M$_*\approx10^9$M$_{\odot}$), $z\sim1$ dusty galaxies. Recent results from baryon acoustic oscillation measurements by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) have found preliminary evidence that dark energy (DE) evolves with time, as parameterized by a $w_0 w_a$ equation of state. In this study, we point out that the DESI-preferred $w_0w_a$ models are recovered when a $w_0w_a$ model is fit to DE produced by baryon conversion in cosmologically coupled black holes (BHs). This recovery does not require any \emph{ad hoc} parameter adjustments; it solely depends on the independently measured cosmic star formation rate density. We discuss our result in the context of the missing baryon problem and the anomalously low sum of neutrino masses preferred by DESI. The global evolution of DE is an orthogonal probe of cosmological coupling, complementing constraints on BH mass growth from elliptical galaxies, stellar binaries, globular clusters, the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA merging population, and X-ray binaries. Coupling of black hole mass to the cosmic expansion has been suggested as a possible path to understanding the dark energy content of the Universe. We test this hypothesis by comparing the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass density at $z=0$ to the total mass accreted in AGN since $z=6$, to constrain how much of the SMBH mass density can arise from cosmologically-coupled growth, as opposed to growth by accretion. Using an estimate of the local SMBH mass density of $\approx 1.0\times10^{6}\,$M$_{\odot}\,$Mpc$^{-1}$, a radiative accretion efficiency, $\eta$: $0.05<\eta<0.3$, and the observed AGN luminosity density at $z\approx 4$, we constrain the value of the coupling constant between the scale size of the Universe and the black hole mass, $k$, to lie in the range $02$ is preferred., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures accepted by ApJ

We have carried out HST snapshot observations at 1.1 $\mu$m of 281 candidate strongly lensed galaxies identified in the wide-area extragalactic surveys conducted with the Herschel space observatory. Our candidates comprise systems with flux densities at $500\,\mu$m$ S_{500}\geq 80$ mJy. We model and subtract the surface brightness distribution for 130 systems, where we identify a candidate for the foreground lens candidate. After combining visual inspection, archival high-resolution observations, and lens subtraction, we divide the systems into different classes according to their lensing likelihood. We confirm 65 systems to be lensed. Of these, 30 are new discoveries. We successfully perform lens modelling and source reconstruction on 23 systems, where the foreground lenses are isolated galaxies and the background sources are detected in the HST images. All the systems are successfully modelled as a singular isothermal ellipsoid. The Einstein radii of the lenses and the magnifications of the background sources are consistent with previous studies. However, the background source circularised radii (between 0.34 kpc and 1.30 kpc) are $\sim$3 times smaller than the ones measured in the sub-mm/mm for a similarly selected and partially overlapping sample. We compare our lenses with those in the SLACS survey, confirming that our lens-independent selection is more effective at picking up fainter and diffuse galaxies and group lenses. This sample represents the first step towards characterising the near-IR properties and stellar masses of the gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies., Comment: 57 pages, 18 figures, 11 tables. We present JWST/MIRI/MRS observations of an infrared luminous disk galaxy, FLS1, at z=0.54. With a lookback time of 5 Gyr, FLS1 is chronologically at the midpoint between the peak epoch of star formation and the present day. The MRS data provide maps of the atomic fine structure lines [Ar II]6.99 micron, [Ar III]8.99 micron, [Ne II]12.81 micron, and [Ne III]15.55 micron, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features at 3.3 micron, 6.2 micron, and 11.3 micron, and the warm molecular gas indicators H2S(5) and H2S(3); all these emission features are spatially resolved. We find that the PAH emission is more extended along the Northern side of the galaxy when compared to the well-studied star-formation tracer [Ne II]. The H2 rotational lines, which are shock indicators, are strongest and most extended on the Southern side of the galaxy. [Ar II] is the second brightest fine structure line detected in FLS1 and we show that it is a useful kinematic probe which can be detected with JWST out to z=3. Velocity maps of [Ar II] show a rotating disk with signs of turbulence. Our results provide an example of how spatially resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy can allow us to better understand the star formation and ISM conditions in a galaxy halfway back to the peak epoch of galaxy evolution., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

A space-based far-infrared interferometer could work synergistically with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to revolutionize our understanding of the astrophysical processes leading to the formation of habitable planets and the co-evolution of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes. Key to these advances are measurements of water in its frozen and gaseous states, observations of astronomical objects in the spectral range where most of their light is emitted, and access to critical diagnostic spectral lines, all of which point to the need for a far-infrared observatory in space. The objects of interest - circumstellar disks and distant galaxies - typically appear in the sky at sub-arcsecond scales, which rendered all but a few of them unresolvable with the successful and now-defunct 3.5-m Herschel Space Observatory, the largest far-infrared telescope flown to date. A far-infrared interferometer with maximum baseline length in the tens of meters would match the angular resolution of JWST at 10x longer wavelengths and observe water ice and water-vapor emission, which ALMA can barely do through the Earth's atmosphere. Such a facility was conceived and studied two decades ago. Here we revisit the science case for a space-based far-infrared interferometer in the era of JWST and ALMA and summarize the measurement capabilities that will enable the interferometer to achieve a set of compelling scientific objectives. A fundamental question of extra-galactic astronomy that is yet to be fully understood, concerns the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) and supermassive black hole (SMBH) activity with cosmic time, as well as their interplay and how it impacts galaxy evolution. A primary focus that could shed more light on these questions is the study of merging systems, comprising highly star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the earliest stages of galactic formation. However, it is essential to explore complementary selection methods across multiple wavelengths. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of a sample of high-redshift ($z>3$) far-infrared (far-IR) and radio-emitting galaxies in the highest possible spatial resolution. In order to select the galactic population of our interest, we selected galaxies that present relatively compact radio morphologies at 1.4 GHz as well as a far-IR spectrum that peaks in flux at $\lambda \geq 350 \, \mu m$. For these selection criteria, we used the COSMOS and ECDF-S fields, which provide high spectral and spatial resolution at a multi-wavelength scale. We derived a sample of eight galaxies that were identified either photometrically or spectroscopically at $z>3$ from literature studies and by our team. A thorough investigation of available optical, near-IR, and millimetre (mm) imaging reveals a possible merging scenario in five out of eight cases in our sample. Additionally, available multi-wavelength photometry strongly suggests active star formation at the $10^3 \, M_{\odot}/yr$ level in massive systems co-hosting an active SMBH. Comparison of these results with previous studies, suggests that our selection method preferentially identifies galaxies hosting an active SMBH, as well as a strong SFG component, resulting in high SFR and IR luminosity., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

We present new Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) 3.6 and 4.5{\mu}m mosaics of three fields, E-COSMOS, DEEP2-F3, and ELAIS-N1. Our mosaics include both new IRAC observations as well as re-processed archival data in these fields. These fields are part of the HSC-Deep grizy survey and have a wealth of additional ancillary data. The addition of these new IRAC mosaics is critical in allowing for improved photometric redshifts and stellar population parameters at cosmic noon and earlier epochs. The total area mapped by this work is {\sim} 17 deg2 with a mean integration time of {\sim}1200s, providing a median 5{\sigma} depth of 23.7(23.3) at 3.6(4.5){\mu}m in AB. We perform SExtractor photometry both on the combined mosaics as well as the single-epoch mosaics taken {\sim}6 months apart. The resultant IRAC number counts show good agreement with previous studies. In combination with the wealth of existing and upcoming spectro-photometric data in these fields, our IRAC mosaics will enable a wide range of galactic evolution and AGN studies. We have measured the angular auto-correlation function of near-infrared galaxies in SERVS+DeepDrill, the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey and its follow-up survey of the Deep Drilling Fields, in three large fields totalling over 20 sq. deg on the sky, observed in two bands centred on 3.6 and 4.5 micron. We performed this analysis on the full sample as well as on sources selected by [3.6]-[4.5] colour in order to probe clustering for different redshift regimes. We estimated the spatial correlation strength as well, using the redshift distribution from S-COSMOS with the same source selection. The strongest clustering was found for our bluest subsample, with z~0.7, which has the narrowest redshift distribution of all our subsamples. We compare these estimates to previous results from the literature, but also to estimates derived from mock samples, selected in the same way as the observational data, using deep light-cones generated from the SHARK semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. For all simulated (sub)samples we find a slightly steeper slope than for the corresponding observed ones, but the spatial clustering length is comparable in most cases., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Low-ionization Broad Absorption Line QSOs (LoBALs) are suspected to be merging systems in which extreme, AGN-driven outflows have been triggered. Whether or not LoBALs are uniquely associated with mergers, however, has yet to be established. To characterize the morphologies of LoBALs, we present the first high-resolution morphological analysis of a volume-limited sample of 22 SDSS-selected LoBALs at 0.5 < z < 0.6 from Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 observations. Host galaxies are resolved in 86% of the systems in F125W, which is sensitive to old stellar populations, while only 18% are detected in F475W, which traces young, unobscured stellar populations. Signs of recent or ongoing tidal interaction are present in 45-64% of the hosts, including double nuclei, tidal tails, bridges, plumes, shells, and extended debris. Ongoing interaction with a companion is apparent in 27-41% of the LoBALs, with as much as 1/3 of the sample representing late-stage mergers at projected nuclear separations <10 kpc. Detailed surface brightness modeling indicates that 41% of the hosts are bulge-dominated while only 18% are disks. We discuss trends in various properties as a function of merger stage and parametric morphology. Notably, mergers are associated with slower, dustier winds than those seen in undisturbed/unresolved hosts. Our results favor an evolutionary scenario in which quasar-level accretion during various merger stages is associated with the observed outflows in low-z LoBALs. Observations have found black holes spanning ten orders of magnitude in mass across most of cosmic history. The Kerr black hole solution is however provisional as its behavior at infinity is incompatible with an expanding universe. Black hole models with realistic behavior at infinity predict that the gravitating mass of a black hole can increase with the expansion of the universe independently of accretion or mergers, in a manner that depends on the black hole's interior solution. We test this prediction by considering the growth of supermassive black holes in elliptical galaxies over $0

The assembly of stellar and supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass in elliptical galaxies since $z\sim1$ can help to diagnose the origins of locally-observed correlations between SMBH mass and stellar mass. We therefore construct three samples of elliptical galaxies, one at $z\sim0$ and two at $0.7\lesssim z \lesssim2.5$, and quantify their relative positions in the $M_{BH}-M_*$ plane. Using a Bayesian analysis framework, we find evidence for translational offsets in both stellar mass and SMBH mass between the local sample and both higher redshift samples. The offsets in stellar mass are small, and consistent with measurement bias, but the offsets in SMBH mass are much larger, reaching a factor of seven between $z\sim1$ and $z\sim0$. The magnitude of the SMBH offset may also depend on redshift, reaching a factor of $\sim20$ at $z\sim 2$. The result is robust against variation in the high and low redshift samples and changes in the analysis approach. The magnitude and redshift evolution of the offset are challenging to explain in terms of selection and measurement biases. We conclude that either there is a physical mechanism that preferentially grows SMBHs in elliptical galaxies at $z\lesssim 2$, or that selection and measurement biases are both underestimated, and depend on redshift., Comment: ApJ, accepted

We study stellar and black hole mass assembly in a sample of 42 infrared-luminous galaxy mergers at z<0.3 by combining results from radiative transfer modelling with archival measures of molecular gas and black hole mass. The ratios of stellar mass, molecular gas mass, and black hole mass to each other are consistent with those of massive gas-rich galaxies at z<0.3. The advanced mergers may show increased black hole mass to stellar mass ratios, consistent with the transition from AGN to ellipticals and implying substantial black hole mass growth over the course of the merger. Star formation rates are enhanced relative to the local main sequence, by factors of ~100 in the starburst and ~1.8 in the host. The starburst star formation rates appear distinct to star formation in the main sequence at all redshifts up to at least z~5. Starbursts may prefer late-stage mergers, but are observed at any merger stage. We do not find evidence that the starbursts in these low-redshift systems substantially increase the total stellar mass, with a soft upper limit on the stellar mass increase from starburst activity of about a factor of two. In contrast, 12 objects show evidence for super-Eddington accretion, associated with late-stage mergers, suggesting that many AGN in infrared-luminous mergers go through a super-Eddington phase. The super-Eddington phase may increase black hole mass by up to an order of magnitude at an accretion efficiency of 42+/-33% over a period of 44+/-22Myr. Our results imply that super-Eddington accretion is an important black hole growth channel in infrared-luminous galaxies at all redshifts., Comment: MNRAS Accepted

We present a new approach to constrained classical fields that enables the action formalism to dictate how external sources must enter the resulting equations of motion. If symmetries asserted upon the varied fields can be modeled as restrictions in Fourier space, we prove that these restrictions are automatically applied to external sources in an unambiguous way. In contrast, the typical procedure inserts symmetric ansatze into the Euler-Lagrange differential equations, even for external sources not being solved. This requires ad hoc constraint of external sources, which can introduce leading-order errors to model systems despite superficial consistency between model field and source terms. To demonstrate, we consider Robertson-Walker cosmologies within General Relativity and prove that the influence of point-like relativistic pressure sources on cosmological dynamics cannot be excluded by theoretical arguments., Comment: 3 pages, accepted at PRD

The luminosity function (LF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) probes the history of supermassive black hole assembly and growth across cosmic time. To mitigate selection biases, we present a consistent analysis of the AGN LFs derived for both X-ray and mid-infrared (MIR) selected AGN in the XMM-Large Scale Structure (XMM-LSS) field. There are 4268 AGN used to construct the MIR luminosity function (IRLF) and 3427 AGN used to construct the X-ray luminosity function (XLF), providing the largest census of the AGN population out to $z=4$ in both bands with significant reduction in uncertainties. We are able for the first time to see the knee of the IRLF at $z>2$ and observe a flattening of the faint-end slope as redshift increases. The bolometric luminosity density, a proxy for the cosmic black hole accretion history, computed from our LFs shows a peak at $z\approx2.25$ consistent with recent estimates of the peak in the star formation rate density (SFRD). However, at earlier epochs, the AGN luminosity density is flatter than the SFRD. If confirmed, this result suggests that the build up of black hole mass outpaces the growth of stellar mass in high mass systems at $z\gtrsim 2.5$. This is consistent with observations of redshift $z\sim 6$ quasars which lie above the local $M-\sigma$ relationship. The luminosity density derived from the IRLF is higher than that from the XLF at all redshifts. We demonstrate a single-parameter route for reproducing higher mass objects as observed in the LIGO--Virgo mass distribution, using only the isolated binary stellar evolution channel. This single parameter encodes the cosmological mass growth of compact stellar remnants that exceed the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit. Cosmological mass growth appears in known solutions to General Relativity with cosmological boundary conditions. We consider the possibility of solutions with cosmological boundary conditions, which reduce to Kerr on timescales short compared to the Hubble time. The Galaxy Evolution Probe (GEP) is a concept for a mid- and far-infrared space observatory to measure key properties of large samples of galaxies with large and unbiased surveys. GEP will attempt to achieve zodiacal light and Galactic dust emission photon background-limited observations by utilizing a 6 Kelvin, 2.0 meter primary mirror and sensitive arrays of kinetic inductance detectors. It will have two instrument modules: a 10 - 400 micron hyperspectral imager with spectral resolution R = 8 (GEP-I) and a 24 - 193 micron, R = 200 grating spectrometer (GEP-S). GEP-I surveys will identify star-forming galaxies via their thermal dust emission and simultaneously measure redshifts using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission lines. Galaxy luminosities derived from star formation and nuclear supermassive black hole accretion will be measured for each source, enabling the cosmic star formation history to be measured to much greater precision than previously possible. Using optically thin far-infrared fine-structure lines, surveys with GEP-S will measure the growth of metallicity in the hearts of galaxies over cosmic time and extraplanar gas will be mapped in spiral galaxies in the local universe to investigate feedback processes. The science case and mission architecture designed to meet the science requirements are described, and the kinetic inductance detector and readout electronics state of the art and needed developments are described. In this work we report the discovery of the hyperluminous galaxy HELP_J100156.75+022344.7 at the photometric redshift of z ~ 4.3. The galaxy was discovered in the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field, one of the fields studied by the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP). We present the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the galaxy and fit it with the CYprus models for Galaxies and their NUclear Spectra (CYGNUS) multi-component radiative transfer models. We find that its emission is dominated by an obscured quasar with a predicted total 1-1000um luminosity of $3.91^{+1.69}_{-0.55} \times 10^{13} L_\odot$ and an active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction of ~89%. We also fit HELP_J100156.75+022344.7 with the Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (CIGALE) code and find a similar result. This is only the second z > 4 hyperluminous obscured quasar discovered to date. The discovery of HELP_J100156.75+022344.7 in the ~ 2deg^2 COSMOS field implies that a large number of obscured hyperluminous quasars may lie in the HELP fields which cover ~ 1300deg^2. If this is confirmed, tension between supermassive black hole evolution models and observations will be alleviated. We estimate the space density of objects like HELP_J100156.75+022344.7 at z ~ 4.5 to be $\sim 1.8 \times 10^{-8}$Mpc$^{-3}$. This is slightly higher than the space density of coeval hyperluminous optically selected quasars suggesting that the obscuring torus in z > 4 quasars may have a covering factor $\gtrsim 50\%$., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letters. Recent simulations and observations of massive galaxy cluster evolution predict that the majority of stellar mass build up happens within cluster members by $z=2$, before cluster virialization. Protoclusters rich with dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z>3$ are the favored candidate progenitors for these massive galaxy clusters at $z\sim0$. We present here the first study analyzing stellar emission along with cold dust and gas continuum emission in a spectroscopically confirmed $z=4.002$ protocluster core rich with DSFGs, the Distant Red Core (DRC). We combine new HST and Spitzer data with existing Gemini, Herschel, and ALMA observations to derive individual galaxy-level properties, and compare them to coeval field and other protocluster galaxies. All of the protocluster members are massive ($>10^{10}$ M$_\odot$), but not significantly more so than their coeval field counterparts. Within uncertainty, all are nearly indistinguishable from galaxies on the star-forming vs. stellar mass main-sequence relationship, and on the star formation efficiency plane. Assuming no future major influx of fresh gas, we estimate that these gaseous DSFGs will deplete their gas reservoirs in $\sim300$ Myr, becoming the massive quiescent ellipticals dominating cluster cores by $z\sim3$. Using various methodologies, we derive a total $z=4$ halo mass of $\sim10^{14}$ M$_\odot$, and estimate that the DRC will evolve to become an ultra-massive cluster core of mass $\gtrsim10^{15}$ M$_\odot$ by $z=0$., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ with first round of revisions incorporated

We use photometric redshifts derived from new $u$-band through 4.5$\mu$m Spitzer IRAC photometry in the 4.8\,deg$^2$ of the XMM-LSS field to construct surface density maps in the redshift range 0.1-1.5. Our density maps show evidence for large-scale structure in the form of filaments spanning several tens of Mpc. Using these maps, we identify 339 overdensities that our simulated lightcone analysis suggests are likely associated with dark matter haloes with masses, $M_{\rm halo}$, log($M_{\rm halo}/M_{\odot})>$13.7. From this list of overdensities we recover 43 of 70 known X-ray detected and spectroscopically confirmed clusters. The missing X-ray clusters are largely at lower redshifts and lower masses than our target log($M_{\rm halo}/M_{\odot})>$13.7. The bulk of the overdensities are compact, but a quarter show extended morphologies which include likely projection effects, clusters embedded in apparent filaments as well as at least one potential cluster merger (at $z\sim1.28$). The strongest overdensity in our highest redshift slice (at $z\sim1.5$) shows a compact red galaxy core potentially implying a massive evolved cluster., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an optical to near-infrared selected astronomical catalogue covering 1270 deg.$^2$. This is the first attempt to systematically combine data from 23 of the premier extragalactic survey fields - the product of a vast investment of telescope time. The fields are those imaged by the Herschel Space Observatory which form the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP). Our catalogue of 170 million objects is constructed by a positional cross match of 51 public surveys. This high resolution optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared catalogue is designed for photometric redshift estimation, extraction of fluxes in lower resolution far-infrared maps, and spectral energy distribution modelling. It collates, standardises, and provides value added derived quantities including corrected aperture magnitudes and astrometry correction over the Herschel extragalactic wide fields for the first time. $grizy$ fluxes are available on all fields with $g$ band data reaching $5\sigma$ point-source depths in a 2 arcsec aperture of 23.5, 24.4, and 24.6 (AB) mag at the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles, by area covered, across all HELP fields. It has $K$ or $K_s$ coverage over 1146 deg.$^2$ with depth percentiles of 20.2, 20.4, and 21.0 mag respectively. The IRAC Ch 1 band is available over 273 deg.$^2$ with depth percentiles of 17.7, 21.4, and 22.2 mag respectively. This paper defines the "masterlist" objects for the first data release (DR1) of HELP. This large sample of standardised total and corrected aperture fluxes, uniform quality flags, and completeness measures provides large well understood statistical samples over the full Herschel extragalactic sky.

We present a detailed study of a high-redshift iron low-ionization broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) quasar (SDSS1214 at $z = 1.046$), including new interferometric $^{12}$CO $J$=2-1 observations, optical through far-infrared photometry, and mid-infrared spectroscopy. The CO line is well-fit by a single Gaussian centered 40 kms$^{-1}$ away from the systemic velocity and implies a total molecular gas mass of $M_\textrm{gas} = 7.3 \times 10^{10} \textrm{M}_\odot$. The infrared SED requires three components: an active galactic nucleus (AGN) torus, an AGN polar dust component, and a starburst. The starburst dominates the infrared emission with a luminosity of log($L_\textrm{SB}[\textrm{L}_\odot]) = 12.91^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$, implying a star formation rate of about 2000 $\textrm{M}_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, the highest known among FeLoBAL quasars. The AGN torus and polar dust components are less luminous, at log($L_\textrm{AGN}[\textrm{L}_\odot]) = 12.36^{+0.14}_{-0.15}$ and log($L_\textrm{dust}[\textrm{L}_\odot]) = 11.75^{+0.26}_{-0.46}$, respectively. If all of the molecular gas is used to fuel the ongoing star formation, then the lower limit on the subsequent duration of the starburst is 40 Myr. We do not find conclusive evidence that the AGN is affecting the CO gas reservoir. We consider some observational consequences of replacing all black holes (BHs) with a class of non-singular solutions that mimic BHs but with Dark Energy (DE) interiors; GEneric Objects of Dark Energy (GEODEs). We focus on the BH mass function and chirp-mass redshift distribution of mergers visible to gravitational wave observatories. We incorporate the GEODE blueshift into an initially Salpeter stellar remnant distribution, and model the binary population by evolving synthesized binary remnant distributions, published before LIGO's first measurements. We find that a GEODE produced between $20 \lesssim z \lesssim 40$, and observed at $z \sim 7$, will have its initial mass amplified by $\sim 20-140\times$. This can relieve tension between accretion-only growth models and the inferred masses of BHs in quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$. Moreover, we find that merger rates of GEODE binaries increase by a factor of $\sim 2\times$ relative to classical BHs. The resulting GEODE mass function is consistent with the most recent LIGO constraints at $< 0.5\sigma$. In contrast, a Salpeter stellar distribution that evolves into classical remnants is in tension at $\gtrsim 2\sigma$. This agreement occurs without low-metallicity regions, abnormally massive progenitor stars, novel formation channels, or primordial object formation at extreme rates. In particular, we find that solar metallicity progenitors, which produce $1.1-1.8\mathrm{M}_\odot$ remnants, overlap with many LIGO observations when evolved as GEODEs., Comment: ApJ accepted

Galaxies grow their supermassive black holes in concert with their stars, although the relationship between these major galactic components is poorly understood. Observations of the cosmic growth of stars and black holes in galaxies suffer from disjoint samples and the strong effects of dust attenuation. The thermal infrared holds incredible potential for simultaneously measuring both the star formation and black hole accretion rates in large samples of galaxies covering a wide range of physical conditions. Spitzer demonstrated this potential at low redshift, and by observing some of the most luminous galaxies at z~2. JWST will apply these methods to normal galaxies at these epochs, but will not be able to generate large spectroscopic samples or access the thermal infrared at high-redshift. An order of magnitude gap in our wavelength coverage will persist between JWST and ALMA. A large, cold infrared telescope can fill this gap to determine when (in cosmic time), and where (within the cosmic web), stars and black holes co-evolve, by measuring these processes simultaneously in statistically complete and unbiased samples of galaxies to z>8. A next-generation radio interferometer will have the resolution and sensitivity to measure star-formation and nuclear accretion in even the dustiest galaxies. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) was revolutionary because of the extraordinary breadth and ambition of its optical imaging and spectroscopy. We argue that a 'sub-millimeter SDSS' - a sensitive large-area imaging+spectroscopic survey in the sub-mm window - will revolutionize our understanding of galaxy evolution in the early Universe. By detecting the thermal dust continuum emission and atomic and molecular line emission of galaxies out to z~10 it will be possible to measure the redshifts, star formation rates, dust and gas content of hundreds of thousands of high-z galaxies down to ~L*. Many of these galaxies will have counterparts visible in the deep optical imaging of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. This 3D map of galaxy evolution will span the peak epoch of galaxy formation all the way back to cosmic dawn, measuring the co-evolution of the star formation rate density and molecular gas content of galaxies, tracking the production of metals and charting the growth of large-scale structure., Comment: Science White paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

The cosmic dawn and epoch of reionization mark the time period in the universe when stars, galaxies, and blackhole seeds first formed and the intergalactic medium changed from neutral to an ionized one. Despite substantial progress with multi-wavelength observations, astrophysical process during this time period remain some of the least understood with large uncertainties on our existing models of galaxy, blackhole, and structure formation. This white paper outlines the current state of knowledge and anticipated scientific outcomes with ground and space-based astronomical facilities in the 2020s. We present a catalog of 26 faint submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the XMM-LSS field identified by cross-matching serendipitously detected sources in archival ALMA Band 6 and 7 data with multi-band near-infrared (NIR) and optical data from the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey, the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Survey, the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Large Survey, and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. Of the 26 SMGs in our sample, 15 are identified here for the first time. The majority of the sources in our sample (16/26) have faint submm fluxes ($0.1\,{\rm mJy} < S_{\rm 1\,mm} < 1\,{\rm mJy}$). In addition to the 26 SMGs with multi-band optical and NIR detections, there are 60 highly-reliable ($>5\sigma$) ALMA sources with no counterpart in any other band down to an IRAC [4.5] $AB$ magnitude of $\approx 23.7$. To further characterize the 26 galaxies with both ALMA and optical/NIR counterparts, we provide 13-band forced photometry for the entire catalog using the Tractor and calculate photometric redshifts and rest-frame colors. The median redshift of our sample is $\langle z \rangle = 2.66$. We find that our sample galaxies have bluer colors compared to bright SMGs, and the UVJ color plot indicates that their colors are consistent with main sequence star-forming galaxies. We present an analysis of a sample of 69 local obscured Swift/Burst Alert Telescope active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with X-ray spectra from NuSTAR and infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions from Herschel and WISE. We combine this X-ray and IR phenomenological modeling and find a significant correlation between reflected hard X-ray emission and IR AGN emission, with suggestive indications that this correlation may be stronger than the one between intrinsic hard X-ray and IR emissions. This relation between the IR and reflected X-ray emission suggests that both are the result of the processing of intrinsic emission from the corona and accretion disk by the same structure. We explore the resulting implications on the underlying distribution of covering fraction for all AGNs, by generating mock observables for the reflection parameter and IR luminosity ratio using empirical relations found for the covering fraction with each quantity. We find that the observed distributions of the reflection parameter and IR-to-X-ray ratio are reproduced with broad distributions centered around covering fractions of at least ~40%-50%, whereas narrower distributions match our observations only when centered around covering fractions of ~70%-80%. Our results are consistent with both independent estimates of the covering fractions of individual objects and the typical covering fraction obtained on the basis of obscured fractions for samples of AGNs. There is significant scientific value to be gained from combining AKARI fluxes with data at other far-IR wavelengths from the IRAS and Herschel missions. To be able to do this we must ensure that there are no systematic differences between the datasets that need to be corrected before the fluxes are compatible with each other. One such systematic effect identified in the BSCv1 data is the issue of beam corrections. We determine these for the BSCv2 data by correlating ratios of appropriate IRAS and AKARI bands with the difference in 2MASS J band extended and point source magnitudes for sources cross matched between the IRAS FSC, AKARI BSCv2 and 2MASS catalogs. We find significant correlations (p<< 10^-13) indicating that beam corrections are necessary in the 65 and 90 micron bands. We then use these corrected fluxes to supplement existing data in spectral energy distribution (SED) fits for ultraluminous infrared galaxies in the HERUS survey. The addition of AKARI fluxes makes little difference to the results of simple (T,beta) fits to the SEDs of these sources, though there is a general decrease in reduced chi^2 values. The utility of the extra AKARI data, however, is in allowing physically more realistic SED models with more parameters to be fit to the data. We also extend our analysis of beam correction issues in the AKARI data by examining the Herschel Reference Sample, which have Herschel photometry from 100 to 500 microns and which are more spatially extended than the HERUS ULIRGs. Thirty-four of the HRS sources have good Herschel SEDs and matching data from AKARI. This investigation finds that our simple 2MASS-based beam correction scheme is inadequate for these larger and more complex sources. In this paper, we investigate the physical associations between blended far-infrared (FIR)-emitting galaxies, in order to identify the level of line-of-sight projection contamination in the single-dish Herschel data. Building on previous work, and as part of the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP), we identify a sample of galaxies in the COSMOS field which are found to be both FIR-bright (typically $\sim 15$ mJy) and blended within the Herschel 250 $\mu$m beam. We identify a spectroscopic or photometric redshift for each FIR-bright source. We conduct a joint probability distribution analysis on the redshift probability density functions to determine the fraction of the FIR sources with multiple FIR-bright counterparts which are likely to be found at consistent ($\Delta z$ $< 0.01$) redshifts. We find that only 3 (0.4 per cent) of the pair permutations between counterparts are $>50$ per cent likely to be at consistent redshifts. A majority of counterparts (72 per cent) have no overlap in their redshift probability distributions whatsoever. This is in good agreement with the results of recent simulations, which indicate that single-dish observations of the FIR sky should be strongly contaminated by line of sight projection effects. We conclude that for our sample of 3.6- and 24-$\mu$m selected, FIR-bright objects in the COSMOS field, the overwhelming majority of multi-component FIR systems are line of sight projections within the 18.1 arcsec Herschel beam, rather than physical associations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 12 pages excluding Appendix; 16 pages total. 6 figures, 3 tables

We report molecular gas observations of IRAS 20100-4156 and IRAS 03158+4227, two local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) hosting some of the fastest and most massive molecular outflows known. Using ALMA and PdBI observations, we spatially resolve the CO(1-0) emission from the outflowing molecular gas in both and find maximum outflow velocities of $ v_{\rm max} \sim 1600$ and $\sim 1700$ km/s for IRAS 20100-4156 and IRAS 03158+4227, respectively. We find total gas mass outflow rates of $\dot M_{\rm OF} \sim 670$ and $\sim 350$ Msun/yr, respectively, corresponding to molecular gas depletion timescales $\tau^{\rm dep}_{\rm OF} \sim 11$ and $\sim 16$ Myr. This is nearly 3 times shorter than the depletion timescales implied by star formation, $\tau^{\rm dep}_{\rm SFR} \sim 33$ and $\sim 46$ Myr, respectively. To determine the outflow driving mechanism, we compare the starburst ($L_{*}$) and AGN ($L_{\rm AGN}$) luminosities to the outflowing energy and momentum fluxes, using mid-infrared spectral decomposition to discern $L_{\rm AGN}$. Comparison to other molecular outflows in ULIRGs reveals that outflow properties correlate similarly with $L_{*}$ and $L_{\rm IR}$ as with $L_{\rm AGN}$, indicating that AGN luminosity alone may not be a good tracer of feedback strength and that a combination of AGN and starburst activity may be driving the most powerful molecular outflows. Interferometric observations have demonstrated that a significant fraction of single-dish submillimetre (submm) sources are blends of multiple submm galaxies (SMGs), but the nature of this multiplicity, i.e. whether the galaxies are physically associated or chance projections, has not been determined. We performed spectroscopy of 11 SMGs in six multi-component submm sources, obtaining spectroscopic redshifts for nine of them. For an additional two component SMGs, we detected continuum emission but no obvious features. We supplement our observed sources with four sources from the literature. This sample allows us to statistically constrain the physical nature of single-dish submm source multiplicity for the first time. In three [3/7, or 43 (-33/+39) per cent at 95% confidence] of the single-dish sources for which the nature of the blending is unambiguous, the components for which spectroscopic redshifts are available are physically associated, whereas 4/7 [57 (-39/+33) per cent] have at least one unassociated component. When components whose spectra exhibit continuum but no features and for which the photometric redshift is significantly different from the spectroscopic redshift of the other component are also considered, 6/9 [67 (-37/+26) per cent] of the single-dish sources are comprised of at least one unassociated component. The nature of the multiplicity of one single-dish source is ambiguous. We conclude that physically associated systems and chance projections both contribute to the multi-component single-dish submm source population. The submillimeter galaxy (SMG) HERMES J105751.1+573027 (hereafter HLock01) at z = 2.9574 +/- 0.0001 is one of the brightest gravitationally lensed sources discovered in the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey. Apart from the high flux densities in the far-infrared, it is also extremely bright in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV), with a total apparent magnitude m_UV = 19.7 mag. We report here deep spectroscopic observations with the Gran Telescopio Canarias of the optically bright lensed images of HLock01. Our results suggest that HLock01 is a merger system composed of the Herschel-selected SMG and an optically bright Lyman break-like galaxy (LBG), separated by only 3.3 kpc in projection. While the SMG appears very massive (M* = 5x10^11 Msun), with a highly extinguished stellar component (A_V = 4.3), the LBG is a young, lower-mass (M* = 1x10^10 Msun), but still luminous (10xL*_UV) satellite galaxy. Detailed analysis of the high signal-to-noise (S/N) rest-frame UV spectrum of the LBG shows complex kinematics of the gas, exhibiting both blueshifted and redshifted absorption components. While the blueshifted component is associated with strong galactic outflows from the massive stars in the LBG, as is common in most star-forming galaxies, the redshifted component may be associated with gas inflow seen along a favorable sightline to the LBG. We also find evidence of an extended gas reservoir around HLock01 at an impact parameter of 110 kpc, through the detection of C II 1334$\AA$ absorption in the red wing of a bright Ly-alpha emitter at z = 3.327. Modified Dark Matter (MDM) is a phenomenological model of dark matter, inspired by gravitational thermodynamics, that naturally accounts for the universal acceleration constant observed in galactic rotation curve data; a critical acceleration related to the cosmological constant, $\Lambda$, appears as a phenomenological manifestation of MDM. We show that the resulting mass profiles, which are sensitve to $\Lambda$, are consistent with observations at the galactic and galaxy cluster scales. We have used the Submillimeter Array at 860$\,\mu$m to observe the brightest SCUBA-2 sources in 4$\,$deg$^{2}$ of the Cosmology Legacy Survey. We have targeted 75 of the brightest single-dish SCUBA-2 850$\,\mu$m sources down to $S_{850}\,{\approx}\,8\,$mJy, achieving an average synthesized beam of 2.4$^{\prime\prime}$ and an average rms of $\sigma_{860}\,{=}\,1.5\,$mJy in our primary beam-corrected maps. We searched our maps for $4\sigma$ peaks, corresponding to $S_{860}\,{\gtrsim}\,6\,$mJy sources, and detected 59 single galaxies and three pairs of galaxies. We include in our study 28 archival observations, bringing our sample size to 103 bright single-dish submillimetre sources with interferometric follow-up. We compute the cumulative and differential number counts of our sample, finding them to overlap with previous single-dish survey number counts within the uncertainties, although our cumulative number count is systematically lower than the parent SCUBA-2 cumulative number count by $24\,{\pm}\,6$ per cent between 11 and 15$\,$mJy. We estimate the probability that a ${\gtrsim}\,10\,$mJy single-dish submillimetre source resolves into two or more galaxies with similar flux densities, causing a significant change in the number counts, to be about 15 per cent. Assuming the remaining 85 per cent of the targets are ultra-luminous starburst galaxies between $z\,{=}\,2$-3, we find a likely volume density of ${\gtrsim}\,400\,$M$_{\odot}\,$yr$^{-1}$ sources to be ${\sim}\,3^{+0.7}_{-0.6}\,{\times}\,10^{-7}\,$Mpc$^{-3}$. We show that the descendants of these galaxies could be ${\gtrsim}\,4\,{\times}\,10^{11}\,$M$_{\odot}$ local quiescent galaxies, and that about 10 per cent of their total stellar mass would have formed during these short bursts of star-formation.

Multi-wavelength surveys covering large sky volumes are necessary to obtain an accurate census of rare objects such as high luminosity and/or high redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN). Stripe 82X is a 31.3 deg$^2$ X-ray survey with $Chandra$ and $XMM$-Newton observations overlapping the legacy Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 field, which has a rich investment of multi-wavelength coverage from the ultraviolet to the radio. The wide-area nature of this survey presents new challenges for photometric redshifts for AGN compared to previous work on narrow-deep fields because it probes different populations of objects that need to be identified and represented in the library of templates. Here we present an updated X-ray plus multi-wavelength matched catalog, including $Spitzer$ counterparts, and estimated photometric redshifts for 5961 (96% of a total of 6181) X-ray sources, which have a normalized median absolute deviation, $\sigma_{\rm nmad}$ = 0.06 and an outlier fraction, $\eta$ = 13.7%. Modified dark matter (MDM) is a phenomenological model of dark matter, inspired by gravitational thermodynamics. For an accelerating Universe with positive cosmological constant ($\Lambda$), such phenomenological considerations lead to the emergence of a critical acceleration parameter related to $\Lambda$. Such a critical acceleration is an effective phenomenological manifestation of MDM, and it is found in correlations between dark matter and baryonic matter in galaxy rotation curves. The resulting MDM mass profiles, which are sensitive to $\Lambda$, are consistent with observational data at both the galactic and cluster scales. In particular, the same critical acceleration appears both in the galactic and cluster data fits based on MDM. Furthermore, using some robust qualitative arguments, MDM appears to work well on cosmological scales, even though quantitative studies are still lacking. Finally, we comment on certain non-local aspects of the quanta of modified dark matter, which may lead to novel non-particle phenomenology and which may explain why, so far, dark matter detection experiments have failed to detect dark matter particles.

Far-infrared astronomy has advanced rapidly since its inception in the late 1950's, driven by a maturing technology base and an expanding community of researchers. This advancement has shown that observations at far-infrared wavelengths are important in nearly all areas of astrophysics, from the search for habitable planets and the origin of life, to the earliest stages of galaxy assembly in the first few hundred million years of cosmic history. The combination of a still developing portfolio of technologies, particularly in the field of detectors, and a widening ensemble of platforms within which these technologies can be deployed, means that far-infrared astronomy holds the potential for paradigm-shifting advances over the next decade. In this review, we examine current and future far-infrared observing platforms, including ground-based, sub-orbital, and space-based facilities, and discuss the technology development pathways that will enable and enhance these platforms to best address the challenges facing far-infrared astronomy in the 21st century., Comment: Invited review article, submitted to the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems. We present results of a ground-based near-infrared campaign with Palomar TripleSpec, Keck NIRSPEC, and Gemini GNIRS to target two samples of reddened active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates from the 31 deg$^2$ Stripe 82 X-ray survey. One sample, which is $\sim$89\% complete to $K<16$ (Vega), consists of eight confirmed AGNs, four of which were identified with our follow-up program, and is selected to have red $R-K$ colors ($>4$, Vega). The fainter sample ($K>17$, Vega) represents a pilot program to follow-up four sources from a parent sample of 34 that are not detected in the single-epoch SDSS catalog and have {\it WISE} quasar colors. All twelve sources are broad-line AGNs (at least one permitted emission line has a FWHM exceeding 1300 km s$^{-1}$) and span a redshift range $0.59 < z < 2.5$. Half the ($R-K$)-selected AGNs have features in their spectra suggestive of outflows. When comparing these sources to a matched sample of blue Type 1 AGNs, we find the reddened AGNs are more distant ($z > 0.5$) and a greater percentage have high X-ray luminosities ($L_{\rm X,full} > 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$). Such outflows and high luminosities may be consistent with the paradigm that reddened broad-line AGNs represent a transitory phase in AGN evolution as described by the major merger model for black hole growth. Results from our pilot program demonstrate proof-of-concept that our selection technique is successful in discovering reddened quasars at $z > 1$ missed by optical surveys., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 9 tables. We present a study of the relation between galaxy stellar age and mass for 14 members of the $z=1.62$ protocluster IRC 0218, using multiband imaging and HST G102 and G141 grism spectroscopy. Using $UVJ$ colors to separate galaxies into star forming and quiescent populations, we find that at stellar masses $M_* \geq 10^{10.85} M_{\odot}$, the quiescent fraction in the protocluster is $f_Q=1.0^{+0.00}_{-0.37}$, consistent with a $\sim 2\times $ enhancement relative to the field value, $f_Q=0.45^{+0.03}_{-0.03}$. At masses $10^{10.2} M_{\odot} \leq M_* \leq 10^{10.85} M_{\odot}$, $f_Q$ in the cluster is $f_Q=0.40^{+0.20}_{-0.18}$, consistent with the field value of $f_Q=0.28^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$. Using galaxy $D_{n}(4000)$ values derived from the G102 spectroscopy, we find no relation between galaxy stellar age and mass. These results may reflect the impact of merger-driven mass redistribution, which is plausible as this cluster is known to host many dry mergers. Alternately, they may imply that the trend in $f_Q$ in IRC 0218 was imprinted over a short timescale in the protocluster's assembly history. Comparing our results with those of other high-redshift studies and studies of clusters at $z\sim 1$, we determine that our observed relation between $f_Q$ and stellar mass only mildly evolves between $z\sim 1.6$ and $z \sim 1$, and only at stellar masses $M_* \leq 10^{10.85} M_{\odot}$. Both the $z\sim 1$ and $z\sim 1.6$ results are in agreement that the red sequence in dense environments was already populated at high redshift, $z \ge 3$, placing constraints on the mechanism(s) responsible for quenching in dense environments at $z\ge 1.5$, Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Using a cosmological $N$-body simulation, we investigate the origin and distribution of stars in the intracluster light (ICL) of a Fornax-like cluster. In a dark matter only simulation we identify a halo which, at $z=0$, has $M_200 \simeq 4.1 \times 10^{13}M_{sun}$ and $r_{200} = 700kpc$, and replace infalling subhalos with models that include spheroid and disc components. As they fall into the cluster, the stars in some of these galaxies are stripped from their hosts, and form the ICL. We consider the separate contributions to the ICL from stars which originate in the haloes and the discs of the galaxies. We find that disc ICL stars are more centrally concentrated than halo ICL stars. The majority of the disc ICL stars are associated with one initially disc-dominated galaxy that falls to the centre of the cluster and is heavily disrupted, producing part of the cD galaxy. At radial distances greater than 200kpc, well beyond the stellar envelope of the cD galaxy, stars formerly from the stellar haloes of galaxies dominate the ICL. We investigate extremely luminous dusty galaxies in the environments around WISE-selected hot dust obscured galaxies (Hot DOGs) and WISE/radio-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at average redshifts of z = 2.7 and z = 1.7, respectively. Previous observations have detected overdensities of companion submillimetre-selected sources around 10 Hot DOGs and 30 WISE/radio AGNs, with overdensities of ~ 2 - 3 and ~ 5 - 6 , respectively. We find that the space densities in both samples to be overdense compared to normal star-forming galaxies and submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS). Both samples of companion sources have consistent mid-IR colours and mid-IR to submm ratios as SMGs. The brighter population around WISE/radio AGNs could be responsible for the higher overdensity reported. We also find the star formation rate density (SFRDs) are higher than the field, but consistent with clusters of dusty galaxies. WISE-selected AGNs appear to be good signposts for protoclusters at high redshift on arcmin scales. The results reported here provide an upper limit to the strength of angular clustering using the two-point correlation function. We present HST WFC3 F160W imaging and infrared spectral energy distributions for twelve extremely luminous, obscured AGN at $1.8

We present stacked average far-infrared spectra of a sample of 197 dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $0.005 < z < 4$ using close to 90% of the SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) extragalactic data archive from the Herschel Space Observatory based on 3.5 years of science operations. These spectra explore an observed-frame $\rm 447\,GHz-1568\,GHz$ ($\rm 191\,\mu m-671\,\mu m$) frequency (wavelength) range allowing us to observe the main atomic and molecular lines emitted by gas in the interstellar medium. The sample is sub-divided into five redshift bins at $0.005 < z < 0.05$, $0.05 < z < 0.2$, $0.2 < z < 0.5$, $0.8 < z <2$, and $2 < z < 4$. To study the dependence of observed spectral lines on total infrared luminosity, the sources in a subset of the redshift bins are stacked in luminosity bins. These stacked spectra are used to determine the average properties of the interstellar medium and dense molecular gas properties of DSFGs, in particular, the fine-structure line ([CII] 158 $\mu$m and [OI] 63 $\mu$m) luminosity ratios, and the line to far-IR luminosity ratios are used to model the gas density and radiation field strength in the photodissociation regions (PDRs). For the low-redshift sample, we additionally present the average spectral line energy distributions (SLED) of CO and $\rm{H_2O}$ rotational transitions and also consider PDR conditions based on a combination of [CI] 370 $\mu$m and 609 $\mu$m and $\rm CO (7-6)$ lines. For the high-z ($0.8 < z < 4$) sample PDR models suggest a molecular gas distribution in the presence of a radiation field that is at least a factor of 10$^3$ larger than the Milky-Way and with a neutral gas density of roughly 10$^3$ to 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$. The corresponding PDR models for the low-z sample suggest a UV radiation field and gas density comparable to those at high-z., Comment: 30 pages, 19 figures

We use two catalogues, a Herschel catalogue selected at 500 mu (HerMES) and an IRAS catalogue selected at 60 mu (RIFSCz), to contrast the sky at these two wavelengths. Both surveys demonstrate the existence of extreme starbursts, with star-formation rates (SFRs) > 5000 Msun/yr. The maximum intrinsic star-formation rate appears to be ~30,000 Msun/yr. The sources with apparent SFR estimates higher than this are in all cases either lensed systems, blazars, or erroneous photometric redshifts. At redshifts of 3 to 5, the time-scale for the Herschel galaxies to make their current mass of stars at their present rate of formation ~ 10^8 yrs, so these galaxies are making a significant fraction of their stars in the current star-formation episode. Using dust mass as a proxy for gas mass, the Herschel galaxies at redshift 3 to 5 have gas masses comparable to their mass in stars. Of the 38 extreme starbursts in our Herschel survey for which we have more complete SED information, over 50% show evidence for QSO-like optical emission, or exhibit AGN dust tori in the mid-infrared SEDs. In all cases however the infrared luminosity is dominated by a starburst component. We derive a mean covering factor for AGN dust as a function of redshift and derive black hole masses and black hole accretion rates. The relativistic jets created by some active galactic nuclei are important agents of AGN feedback. In spite of this, our understanding of what produces these jets is still incomplete. X-ray observations, which can probe the processes operating in the central regions in immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole, the presumed jet launching point, are potentially particularly valuable in illuminating the jet formation process. Here, we present the hard X-ray NuSTAR observations of the radio-loud quasar 4C 74.26 in a joint analysis with quasi-simultaneous, soft X-ray Swift observations. Our spectral analysis reveals a high-energy cut-off of 183$_{-35}^{+51}$ keV and confirms the presence of ionized reflection in the source. From the average spectrum we detect that the accretion disk is mildly recessed with an inner radius of $R_\mathrm{in}=4-180\,R_\mathrm{g}$. However, no significant evolution of the inner radius is seen during the three months covered by our NuSTAR campaign. This lack of variation could mean that the jet formation in this radio-loud quasar differs from what is observed in broad-line radio galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We apply The Tractor image modeling code to improve upon existing multi-band photometry for the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (SERVS). SERVS consists of post-cryogenic Spitzer observations at 3.6 and 4.5 micron over five well-studied deep fields spanning 18 square degrees. In concert with data from ground-based near-infrared (NIR) and optical surveys, SERVS aims to provide a census of the properties of massive galaxies out to z ~ 5. To accomplish this, we are using The Tractor to perform "forced photometry." This technique employs prior measurements of source positions and surface brightness profiles from a high-resolution fiducial band from the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey to model and fit the fluxes at lower-resolution bands. We discuss our implementation of The Tractor over a square degree test region within the XMM-LSS field with deep imaging in 12 NIR/optical bands. Our new multi-band source catalogs offer a number of advantages over traditional position-matched catalogs, including 1) consistent source cross-identification between bands, 2) de-blending of sources that are clearly resolved in the fiducial band but blended in the lower-resolution SERVS data, 3) a higher source detection fraction in each band, 4) a larger number of candidate galaxies in the redshift range 5 < z < 6, and 5) a statistically significant improvement in the photometric redshift accuracy as evidenced by the significant decrease in the fraction of outliers compared to spectroscopic redshifts. Thus, forced photometry using The Tractor offers a means of improving the accuracy of multi-band extragalactic surveys designed for galaxy evolution studies. Submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $z\gtrsim1$ are luminous in the far-infrared and have star-formation rates, SFR, of hundreds to thousands of solar masses per year. However, it is unclear whether they are true analogs of local ULIRGs or whether the mode of their star formation is more similar to that in local disk galaxies. We target these questions by using Herschel-PACS to examine the conditions in the interstellar medium (ISM) in far-infrared luminous SMGs at z~1-4. We present 70-160 micron photometry and spectroscopy of the [OIV]26 micron, [FeII]26 micron, [SIII]33 micron, [SiII]34 micron, [OIII]52 micron, [NIII]57 micron, and [OI]63 micron fine-structure lines and the S(0) and S(1) hydrogen rotational lines in 13 lensed SMGs identified by their brightness in early Herschel data. Most of the 13 targets are not individually spectroscopically detected and we instead focus on stacking these spectra with observations of an additional 32 SMGs from the \herschel\ archive -- representing a complete compilation of PACS spectroscopy of SMGs. We detect [OI]63 micron, [SiII]34 micron, and [NIII]57 micron at >3sigma in the stacked spectra, determining that the average strengths of these lines relative to the far-IR continuum are $(0.36\pm0.12)\times10^{-3}$, $(0.84\pm0.17)\times10^{-3}$, and $(0.27\pm0.10)\times10^{-3}$, respectively. Using the [OIII]52/[NIII]57 emission line ratio we show that SMGs have average gas-phase metallicities $\gtrsim Z_{\rm sun}$. By using PDR modelling and combining the new spectral measurements with integrated far-infrared fluxes and existing [CII]158 micron data we show that SMGs have average gas densities, n, of $\sim10^{1-3}{\rm cm^{-3}}$ and FUV field strengths, $G_0\sim10^{2.2-4.5}$ (in Habing units: $1.6\times10^{-3}{\rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$), consistent with both local ULIRGs and lower luminosity star-forming galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the Herschel SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (FTS) atlas for a complete flux limited sample of local Ultra-Luminous Infra-Red Galaxies as part of the HERschel ULIRG Survey (HERUS). The data reduction is described in detail and was optimized for faint FTS sources with particular care being taken with the subtraction of the background which dominates the continuum shape of the spectra. Special treatment in the data reduction has been given to any observation suffering from artefacts in the data caused by anomalous instrumental effects to improve the final spectra. Complete spectra are shown covering $200 - 671\mu$m with photometry in the SPIRE bands at 250$\mu$m, 350$\mu$m and 500$\mu$m. The spectra include near complete CO ladders for over half of our sample, as well as fine structure lines from [CI] 370 $\mu$m, [CI] 609 $\mu$m, and [NII] 205 $\mu$m. We also detect H$_{2}$O lines in several objects. We construct CO Spectral Line Energy Distributions (SLEDs) for the sample, and compare their slopes with the far-infrared colours and luminosities. We show that the CO SLEDs of ULIRGs can be broadly grouped into three classes based on their excitation. We find that the mid-J (5$<$J$<$8) lines are better correlated with the total far-infrared luminosity, suggesting that the warm gas component is closely linked to recent star-formation. The higher J transitions do not linearly correlate with the far-infrared luminosity, consistent with them originating in hotter, denser gas unconnected to the current star-formation. {\bf We conclude that in most cases more than one temperature components are required to model the CO SLEDs.}
