Search

Jets at the LHC, typically consisting of a large number of highly correlated particles, are a fascinating laboratory for deep generative modeling. In this paper, we present two novel methods that generate LHC jets as point clouds efficiently and accurately. We introduce \epcjedi, which combines score-matching diffusion models with the Equivariant Point Cloud (EPiC) architecture based on the deep sets framework. This model offers a much faster alternative to previous transformer-based diffusion models without reducing the quality of the generated jets. In addition, we introduce \epcfm, the first permutation equivariant continuous normalizing flow (CNF) for particle cloud generation. This model is trained with {\it flow-matching}, a scalable and easy-to-train objective based on optimal transport that directly regresses the vector fields connecting the Gaussian noise prior to the data distribution. Our experiments demonstrate that \epcjedi and \epcfm both achieve state-of-the-art performance on the top-quark JetNet datasets whilst maintaining fast generation speed. Most notably, we find that the \epcfm model consistently outperforms all the other generative models considered here across every metric. In this letter, we use LHC data from the Drell-Yan processes $pp\to\ell_i\ell_j$ (with $i\neq j$) to derive model-independent upper limits on lepton-flavor-violating meson decays. Our analysis is based on an Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach and it does not require a specific assumption regarding the basis of effective operators. We find that current LHC data (140~$\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$) already provides competitive limits on $B(B\to \pi e \tau)$ and $B(B\to \pi \mu \tau)$ with respect to the ones obtained through experimental searches at the $B$-factories. Moreover, we derive upper limits on several decays that have not been searched for experimentally yet, such as $D^0\to e\tau$ in the charm sector, and various semileptonic decays such as $B\to \rho \mu\tau$, $B_s\to K \mu\tau$ and $B_s\to\phi\mu\tau$. We propose an extension of the existing experimental strategy for measuring branching fractions of top quark decays, targeting specifically $t\to j_q W$, where $j_q$ is a light quark jet. The improved strategy uses orthogonal $b$- and $q$-taggers, and adds a new observable, the number of light-quark-tagged jets, to the already commonly used observable, the fraction of $b$-tagged jets in an event. Careful inclusion of the additional complementary observable significantly increases the expected statistical power of the analysis, with the possibility of excluding $|V_{tb}|=1$ at $95\%$ C.L. at the HL-LHC, and accessing directly the standard model value of $|V_{td}|^2+|V_{ts}|^2$., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

We consider the Drell-Yan processes $pp \to \ell \ell^{(\prime)}$ and $pp\to \ell \bar{\nu}$ at high-$p_T$ as probes of New Physics effects in semileptonic transitions. For this purpose, we describe the $2\to2$ scattering amplitudes in terms of general form-factors which we match to the SMEFT at $\mathcal{O}(1/\Lambda^{4})$ including corrections from dimension-$8$ operators and to tree-level mediators with $\mathcal{O}$(TeV) masses arising from ultraviolet models. By using the latest LHC run-II data from monolepton and dilepton production channels, we derive constraints on the SMEFT and on leptoquark models, with the most general flavor structures. HighPT is a Mathematica package for the analysis of high-energy data of semileptonic transitions at hadron colliders. It allows to compute high-$p_T$ tail observables for semileptonic processes, i.e. Drell-Yan cross sections, for dilepton and monolepton final states at the LHC. These observables can be calculated at tree level within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, including the relevant operators up to dimension eight to ensure a consistent description of the cross section including terms of $\mathcal{O}(\Lambda^{-4})$ in the cutoff scale $\Lambda$. For New Physics models with new mediators that can be resolved at LHC energies, HighPT can also account for the full propagation effects of these new bosonic states at tree level. Using the available data from the high-$p_T$ tails in the relevant LHC run-II searches by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, HighPT can also construct the corresponding likelihoods for all possible flavors of the leptonic final states. As an illustration, we derive and compare constraints on Wilson coefficients at different orders in the Effective Field Theory expansion, and we investigate lepton flavor violation for the $S_3$ leptoquark model. We investigate the high-$p_T$ tails of the $pp\to \ell \nu$ and $pp \to \ell \ell$ Drell-Yan processes as probes of New Physics in semileptonic interactions with an arbitrary flavor structure. For this purpose, we provide a general decomposition of the $2\to2$ scattering amplitudes in terms of form-factors that we match to specific scenarios, such as the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), including all relevant operators up to dimension-$8$, as well as ultraviolet scenarios giving rise to tree-level exchange of new bosonic mediators with masses at the TeV scale. By using the latest LHC run-II data in the monolepton ($e\nu$, $\mu\nu$, $\tau\nu$) and dilepton ($ee$, $\mu\mu$, $\tau\tau$, $e\mu$, $e\tau$, $\mu\tau$) production channels, we derive constraints on the SMEFT Wilson coefficients for semileptonic four-fermion and dipole operators with the most general flavor structure, as well as on all possible leptoquark models. For the SMEFT, we discuss the range of validity of the EFT description, the relevance of $\mathcal{O}(1/\Lambda^2)$ and $\mathcal{O}(1/\Lambda^4)$ truncations, the impact of $d=8$ operators and the effects of different quark-flavor alignments. Finally, as a highlight, we extract for several New Physics scenarios the combined limits from high-$p_T$ processes, electroweak pole measurements and low-energy flavor data for the $b\to c\tau\nu$ transition, showing the complementarity between these different observables. We discuss a model that can accommodate the $B$-physics anomalies, based on combining two scalar leptoquarks, $R_2$ and $S_3$, of mass $\mathcal{O}(1\,\mathrm{TeV})$, and that we proposed in our previous paper. We update the analysis of its parameter space and show that a model remains viable and consistent with a number of low energy and high energy flavor physics constraints. Since the model predicts a non-zero New Physics phase, we discuss the possibility to test its contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment and to the angular distributions of the exclusive $b\to c\tau \bar \nu$ decays. We find that the model can provide a significant enhancement to $\mathcal{B}(B\to K^{(\ast)}\nu\nu)$ and provides both the upper and lower bounds to $\mathcal{B}(B\to K^{(\ast)}\mu\tau)$., Comment: 11pages, 5 figures

Motivated by UV explanations of the $B$-physics anomalies, we study a dark sector containing a Majorana dark matter candidate and a coloured coannihilation partner, connected to the Standard Model predominantly via a $U_1$ vector leptoquark. A TeV scale $U_1$ leptoquark, which couples mostly to third generation fermions, is the only successful single-mediator description of the $B$-physics anomalies. After calculating the dark matter relic surface, we focus on the most promising experimental avenue: LHC searches for the coloured coannihilation partner. We find that the coloured partner hadronizes and forms meson-like bound states leading to resonant signatures at colliders reminiscent of the quarkonia decay modes in the Standard Model. By recasting existing dilepton and monojet searches we exclude coannihilation partner masses less than 280 GeV and 400 GeV, respectively. Since other existing collider searches do not significantly probe the parameter space, we propose a new dedicated search strategy for pair production of the coloured partner decaying into $bb\tau\tau$ final states and dark matter particles. This search is expected to probe the model up to dark matter masses around 600 GeV with current luminosity., Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures

Monte Carlo (MC) generators are crucial for analyzing data in particle collider experiments. However, often even a small mismatch between the MC simulations and the measurements can undermine the interpretation of the results. This is particularly important in the context of LHC searches for rare physics processes within and beyond the standard model (SM). One of the ultimate rare processes in the SM currently being explored at the LHC, $pp\to t\bar tt \bar t$ with its large multi-dimensional phase-space is an ideal testing ground to explore new ways to reduce the impact of potential MC mismodelling on experimental results. We propose a novel statistical method capable of disentangling the 4-top signal from the dominant backgrounds in the same-sign dilepton channel, while simultaneously correcting for possible MC imperfections in modelling of the most relevant discriminating observables -- the jet multiplicity distributions. A Bayesian mixture of multinomials is used to model the light-jet and $b$-jet multiplicities under the assumption of their conditional independence. The signal and background distributions generated from a deliberately mistuned MC simulator are used as model priors. The posterior distributions, as well as the signal and background fractions, are then learned from the data using Bayesian inference. We demonstrate that our method can mitigate the effects of large MC mismodellings in the context of a realistic $t\bar tt\bar t$ search, leading to corrected posterior distributions that better approximate the underlying truth-level spectra., Comment: Matches accepted version at PRD. 11 pages, 8 figures. Motivated by the recent LHCb announcement of a $3.1\sigma$ violation of lepton-flavor universality in the ratio $R_K=\Gamma(B\to K\mu^+\mu^-)/\Gamma(B\to K e^+ e^-)$, we present an updated, comprehensive analysis of the flavor anomalies seen in both neutral-current ($b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$) and charged-current ($b\to c\tau\bar\nu$) decays of $B$ mesons. Our study starts from a model-independent effective field-theory approach and then considers both a simplified model and a UV-complete extension of the Standard Model featuring a vector leptoquark $U_1$ as the main mediator of the anomalies. We show that the new LHCb data corroborate the emerging pattern of a new, predominantly left-handed, semileptonic current-current interaction with a flavor structure respecting a (minimally) broken $U(2)^5$ flavor symmetry. New aspects of our analysis include a combined analysis of the semileptonic operators involving tau leptons, including in particular the important constraint from $B_s$--$\bar B_s$ mixing, a systematic study of the effects of right-handed leptoquark couplings and of deviations from minimal flavor-symmetry breaking, a detailed analysis of various rare $B$-decay modes which would provide smoking-gun signatures of this non-standard framework (LFV decays, di-tau modes, and $B\to K^{(*)}\nu\bar\nu$), and finally an updated analysis of collider bounds on the leptoquark mass and couplings., Comment: 43 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables. v2: new appendix, matching the journal version

We revisit the possibilities of accommodating the experimental indications of the lepton flavor universality violation in $b$-hadron decays in the minimal scenarios in which the Standard Model is extended by the presence of a single $\mathcal{O}(1\,\mathrm{TeV})$ leptoquark state. To do so we combine the most recent low energy flavor physics constraints, including $R_{K^{(\ast)}}^\mathrm{exp}$ and $R_{D^{(\ast)}}^\mathrm{exp}$, and combine them with the bounds on the leptoquark masses and their couplings to quarks and leptons as inferred from the direct searches at the LHC and the studies of the large $p_T$ tails of the $pp\to \ell\ell$ differential cross section. We find that none of the scalar leptoquarks of $m_\mathrm{LQ} \simeq 1\div 2$ TeV can accommodate the $B$-anomalies alone. Only the vector leptoquark, known as $U_1$, can provide a viable solution which, in the minimal setup, provides an interesting prediction, i.e. a lower bound to the lepton flavor violating $b\to s\mu^\pm\tau^\mp$ decay modes, such as $\mathcal{B}(B\to K\mu\tau) \gtrsim 0.7\times 10^{-7}$., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures (10 plots) [v2: references added, Fig. 3 improved]

Individual events at high-energy colliders like the LHC can be represented by a sequence of measurements, or 'point patterns' in an observable space. Starting from this data representation, we build a simple Bayesian probabilistic model for event measurements useful for unsupervised event classification in beyond the standard model (BSM) studies. In order to arrive to this model we assume that the event measurements are exchangeable (and apply De Finetti's representation theorem), the data is discrete, and measurements are generated from multiple 'latent' distributions, called 'themes'. The resulting probabilistic model for collider events is a mixed-membership model known as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a model extensively used in natural language processing applications. By training on point patterns in the primary Lund plane, we demonstrate that a two-theme LDA model can learn to distinguish in unlabelled dijet events the hidden new physics patterns produced by a BSM signature from a much larger QCD background. We describe a technique to learn the underlying structure of collider events directly from the data, without having a particular theoretical model in mind. It allows to infer aspects of the theoretical model that may have given rise to this structure, and can be used to cluster or classify the events for analysis purposes. The unsupervised machine-learning technique is based on the probabilistic (Bayesian) generative model of Latent Dirichlet Allocation. We pair the model with an approximate inference algorithm called Variational Inference, which we then use to extract the latent probability distributions describing the learned underlying structure of collider events. We provide a detailed systematic study of the technique using two example scenarios to learn the latent structure of di-jet event samples made up of QCD background events and either $t\bar{t}$ or hypothetical $W' \to (\phi \to WW) W$ signal events., Comment: 38 pages, 23 figures

We analyse how $U(3)^5$ and $U(2)^5$ flavour symmetries act on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, providing an organising principle to classify the large number of dimension-six operators involving fermion fields. A detailed counting of such operators, at different order in the breaking terms of both these symmetries, is presented. Starting from a general effective Lagrangian for lepton flavor violation (LFV) in quark-lepton transitions, we derive constraints on the effective coefficients from the high-mass tails of the dilepton processes $pp \to \ell_k \ell_l$ (with $k\neq l$). The current (projected) limits derived in this paper from LHC data with $36~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ ($3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$) can be applied to generic new physics scenarios, including the ones with scalar, vector and tensor effective operators. For purely left-handed operators, we explicitly compare these LHC constraints with the ones derived from flavor-physics observables, illustrating the complementarity of these different probes. While flavor physics is typically more constraining for quark-flavor violating operators, we find that LHC provides the most stringent limits on several flavor-conserving ones. Furthermore, we show that dilepton tails offer the best probes for charm-quark transitions at current luminosities and that they provide competitive limits for tauonic $b\to d$ transitions at the high-luminosity LHC phase. We analyze the prospects of probing the $CP$-odd $i \tilde \kappa \bar t \gamma^5 t h$ interaction at the LHC and its projected upgrades, the high-luminosity and high-energy LHC, directly using associated on-shell Higgs boson and top quark or top quark pair production. To this end we first construct a $CP$-odd observable based on top quark polarization in $W b \to t h$ scattering with optimal linear sensitivity to $\tilde \kappa$. For the corresponding hadronic process $pp \to t h j$ we present a method of extracting the phase-space dependent weight function that allows to retain close to optimal sensitivity to $\tilde{\kappa}$. We project future sensitivity to the signal in $pp \to t(\to \ell \nu b )h(\to b\bar b) j$. Based on these insights we propose novel $CP$-odd observables for top quark pair production in association with the Higgs, $pp \to t \bar t h$, with semileptonically decaying tops and $h\to \bar b b$, that rely solely on measuring the momenta of leptons and $b$-jets from the decaying tops without having to distinguish the charge of the $b$-jets. Among the many possibilities we single out an observable that can potentially probe $\tilde \kappa \sim 0.5$ at the high-luminosity LHC and $\tilde \kappa \sim 0.1$ at high-energy LHC with $2\sigma$ confidence., Comment: Updated sensitivity plots due to better data samples

We apply techniques from Bayesian generative statistical modeling to uncover hidden features in jet substructure observables that discriminate between different a priori unknown underlying short distance physical processes in multi-jet events. In particular, we use a mixed membership model known as Latent Dirichlet Allocation to build a data-driven unsupervised top-quark tagger and $t\bar t$ event classifier. We compare our proposal to existing traditional and machine learning approaches to top jet tagging. Finally, employing a toy vector-scalar boson model as a benchmark, we demonstrate the potential for discovering New Physics signatures in multi-jet events in a model independent and unsupervised way., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; v2: matches published version. We discuss the physics case for direct searches at the LHC motivated by the $B$-physics anomalies. After correlating semi-tauonic $B$ decays to di-tau production at the LHC, and discussing the possible models solving the $B$-anomalies, we show how current LHC data in $\tau\bar\tau$ tails exclude most beyond the SM scenarios except for a handful of leptoquark (LQ) models. We analyze in detail the impact of LHC searches for some of these LQ solutions using current data. In particular, we focus on the well known $U_1\sim({\bf3},{\bf1})_{2/3}$ vector LQ solution as well as the GUT-inspired scalar LQ solutions, $R_2\sim({\bf3},{\bf2})_{7/6}$ and $S_3\sim({\bf\bar3},{\bf3})_{1/3}$. We examine various scenarios in which the Standard Model is extended by a light leptoquark state to solve for one or both $B$-physics anomalies, viz. $R_{D^{(\ast)}}^\mathrm{exp}> R_{D^{(\ast)}}^\mathrm{SM}$ or/and $R_{K^{(\ast)}}^\mathrm{exp}< R_{K^{(\ast)}}^\mathrm{SM}$. To do so we combine the constraints arising both from the low-energy observables and from direct searches at the LHC. We find that none of the scalar leptoquarks of mass $m_\mathrm{LQ} \simeq 1$ TeV can alone accommodate the above mentioned anomalies. The only single leptoquark scenario which can provide a viable solution for $m_\mathrm{LQ} \simeq 1\div 2$ TeV is a vector leptoquark, known as $U_1$, which we re-examine in its minimal form (letting only left-handed couplings to have non-zero values). We find that the limits deduced from direct searches are complementary to the low-energy physics constraints. In particular, we find a rather stable lower bound on the lepton flavor violating $b\to s\ell_1^\pm\ell_2^\mp$ modes, such as $\mathcal{B}(B\to K\mu\tau)$. Improving the experimental upper bound on $\mathcal{B}(B\to K\mu\tau)$ by two orders of magnitude could compromise the viability of the minimal $U_1$ model as well., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures; v3: Version to appear in JHEP

We address the $B$-physics anomalies within a two scalar leptoquark model. The low-energy flavor structure of our set-up originates from two $SU(5)$ operators that relate Yukawa couplings of the two leptoquarks. The proposed scenario has a UV completion, can accommodate all measured lepton flavor universality ratios in $B$-meson decays, is consistent with related flavor observables, and is compatible with direct searches at the LHC. We analyze the possibility to accommodate current $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ anomalies with TeV-scale mediators that couple to right-handed top quarks and muons, contributing to $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-\,$ at the one-loop level. We use the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework but also look at specific scenarios by taking into account all possible irreducible representations of the Lorentz and Standard Model gauge group for the mediators. From a global fit of $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ data and LEP-I observables we find that the Wilson coefficients of two SMEFT operators: $\mathcal{O}_{\ell u}= (\bar \ell_{ L \mu} \gamma^{\alpha} \ell_{ L \mu}) (\bar t_R \gamma_{\alpha} t_R )$ and $\mathcal{O}_{e u}= (\bar \mu_{R} \gamma^{\alpha} \mu_{R}) (\bar t_R \gamma_{\alpha} t_R )$ need to satisfy $\mathcal{C}_{eu} \sim \mathcal{C}_{\ell u}$. New physics enters then in $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ mainly through the operator $\mathcal{O}_9 = ( \bar s \gamma_{\mu} P_{L} b )( \bar \ell \gamma^{\mu} \ell )$ of the Weak Effective Theory. After discussing all possible mediators, we concentrate on two scenarios: A vector boson in the irreducible representation $Z_{\mu}^{\prime} \sim (1,1,0)$ of the Standard Model gauge group with vectorial coupling to muons, and a combination of two leptoquarks: the scalar $R_2 \sim (3,2,7/6)$ and the vector $\widetilde U_{1 \mu} \sim (3,1,5/3)$. We derive LHC constraints by recasting di-muon resonance, $pp \to t \bar t t \bar t$ and SUSY searches. We investigate the ability of the $S_3$ scalar leptoquark to address the recent hints of lepton universality violation in $B$ meson decays. The $S_3$ leptoquark with quantum numbers $(\overline{\mathbf{3}},\mathbf{3},1/3)$ naturally emerges in the context of an $SU(5)$ GUT model without any conflict with the stringent limits from observed nucleon stability. Scalar leptoquark $S_3$ with left-handed couplings to 2nd and 3rd generations of charged leptons and down-type quarks seems well-suited to address both $R_{K^{(*)}}$ and $R_{D^{(*)}}$. We quantify this suitability with numerical fits to a plethora of relevant flavor observables. The proposed $SU(5)$ model calls for a second leptoquark state, i.e., $\tilde{R}_2$ with quantum numbers $(\mathbf{3},\mathbf{2},1/6)$, if one is to generate gauge coupling unification and neutrino mass. We accordingly include it in our study to investigate $\tilde{R}_2$'s ability to offset adverse effects of $S_3$ and thus improve a quality of numerical fits. A global fit of the leptoquark Yukawa couplings shows that large couplings of light $S_3$ to $\tau$ leptons are preferred. We furthermore identify $B \to K^{(*)} \bar\nu\nu$ as the most sensitive channel to probe the preferred region of parameter space. Large couplings of $S_3$ to $\tau$ leptons are finally confronted with the experimental searches for $\tau$ final states at the Large Hadron Collider. We design a search strategy for the Standard Model $t\bar t t \bar t$ production at the LHC in the same-sign dilepton and trilepton channels. We study different signal features and, given the small expected number of signal events, we scrutinize in detail all reducible and irreducible backgrounds. Our analysis shows that by imposing a set of basic jet and lepton selection criteria, the SM $pp \to t\bar t t \bar t$ process could be evidenced in the near future, within Run-II, when combining both multi-lepton search channels. We argue that this search strategy should also be used as a guideline to test New Physics coupling predominantly to top-quarks. In particular, we show that a non-resonant New Physics enhancement in the four-top final state would be detectable through this search strategy. We confront the indications of lepton flavor universality (LFU) violation observed in semi-tauonic $B$ meson decays with new physics (NP) searches using high $p_T$ tau leptons at the LHC. Using effective field theory arguments we correlate possible non-standard contributions to semi-tauonic charged currents with the $\tau^+ \tau^-$ signature at high energy hadron colliders. Several representative standard model extensions put forward to explain the anomaly are examined in detail: (i) weak triplet of color-neutral vector resonances, (ii) second Higgs doublet and (iii) scalar or (iv) vector leptoquark. We find that, in general, $\tau^+ \tau^-$ searches pose a serious challenge to NP explanations of the LFU anomaly. Recasting existing 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC analyses, stringent limits are set on all considered simplified models. Future projections of the $\tau^+ \tau^-$ constraints as well as caveats in interpreting them within more elaborate models are also discussed., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures
