Understanding the age structure of vegetation is important for effective land management, especially in fire-prone landscapes where the effects of fire can persist for decades and centuries. In many parts of the world, such information is limited due to an inability to map disturbance histories before the availability of satellite images (~1972). Here, we describe a method for creating a spatial model of the age structure of canopy species that established pre-1972. We built predictive neural network models based on remotely sensed data and ecological field survey data. These models determined the relationship between sites of known fire age and remotely sensed data. The predictive model was applied across a 104,000 km(2) study region in semi-arid Australia to create a spatial model of vegetation age structure, which is primarily the result of stand-replacing fires which occurred before 1972. An assessment of the predictive capacity of the model using independent validation data showed a significant correlation (rs = 0.64) between predicted and known age at test sites. Application of the model provides valuable insights into the distribution of vegetation age-classes and fire history in the study region. This is a relatively straightforward method which uses widely available data sources that can be applied in other regions to predict age-class distribution beyond the limits imposed by satellite imagery.

N-Acetylneuraminic acid lyase (NAL) exhibits poor facial selectivity during carbon-carbon formation, and as such, its utility as a catalyst for use in synthetic chemistry is limited. For example, the NAL-catalyzed condensation between pyruvate and (2R,3S)-2,3-dihydroxy-4-oxo-N,N-dipropylbutyramide yields ca. 3:1 mixtures of diastereomeric products under either kinetic or thermodynamic control. Engineering the stereochemical course of NAL-catalyzed reactions could remove this limitation. We used directed evolution to create a pair of stereochemically complementary variant NALs for the synthesis of sialic acid mimetics. The E192N variant, a highly efficient catalyst for aldol reactions of (2R,3S)-2,3-dihydroxy-4-oxo-N,N-dialkylbutyramides, was chosen as a starting point. Initially, error-prone PCR identified residues in the active site of NAL that contributed to the stereochemical control of an aldolase-catalyzed reaction. Subsequently, an intense structure-guided program of saturation and site-directed mutagenesis was used to identify a complementary pair of variants, E192N/T167G and E192N/T167V/S208V, which were approximately 50-fold selective toward the cleavage of the alternative 4S- and 4R-configured condensation products, respectively. It was shown that wild-type NAL could not be used for the highly stereoselective synthesis of a 6-dipropylamide sialic acid mimetic because the 4S-configured product was only approximately 3-fold kinetically favored and only approximately 3-fold thermodynamically favored over the alternative 4R-configured product. However, the complementary 4R- and 4S-selective variants allowed the highly (>98:<2) diastereoselective synthesis of both 4S- and 4R-configured products under kinetic control from the same starting materials. Conversion of an essentially nonselective aldolase into a pair of complementary biocatalysts will be of enormous interest to synthetic chemists. Furthermore, since residues identified as critical for stereoselectivity are conserved among members of the NAL superfamily, the approach might be extended to the evolution of other useful biocatalysts for the stereoselective synthesis of biologically active molecules.

A pool of single-word adjectives representing smoking outcome expectancies was derived and tested in two studies. In Study One, smoking-related words were generated and then clustered together to form 39 categories representing smoking expectancy nodes. Analysis of the number of times words in each category were generated indicated that expectancies varied as a function of smoking status (measured at two levels: Ever smoked daily vs. never smoked daily), smoking history (current vs. past smoker), and dependence (nondependent vs. dependent). In Study Two, participants rated the words in terms of expectations of smoking outcomes. A principal components analysis of the ratings indicated that three components accounted for 74.10% of the variance in participants' ratings: Component 1 (adverse effects), 30.92%; component 2 (positive image), 28.08%; and component 3 (positive mood), 15.09%. Further analyses revealed that ratings of words comprising the three components differed as a function of smoking status (measured at three levels: Never smoked daily, daily nondependent smoker, daily dependent smoker), with dependent smokers rating the outcomes associated with all three components as occurring more frequently when they smoked compared with nondependent smokers or those who never smoked daily. The results suggest that the single-word adjectives are appropriate for use in research investigating smoking outcome expectancies.

The effects of variation in a speaker's voice and temporal phoneme location were assessed through a series of speeded classification experiments. Listeners monitored speech syllables for target consonants or vowels. The results showed that speaker variability and phoneme-location variability had detrimental effects on classification latencies for target sounds. In addition, an interaction between variables showed that the speaker variability effect was obtained only when temporal phoneme location was fixed across trials. A subadditive decrement in latencies produced by the interaction of the two variables was also obtained, suggesting that perceptual loads may not affect perceptual adjustments to a speaker's voice in the same way that memory loads do.

The perceptual representation of voice gender was examined with two experimental paradigms: identification/discrimination and selective adaptation. The results from the identification and discrimination of a synthetic male-female voice continuum indicated that voice gender perception was not categorical. In addition, results from selective adaptation experiments with natural and synthetic voice stimuli indicated that the perceptual representation of voice adapted is an auditory-based representation. Overall, these findings suggest that the perceptual representation of voice gender is auditory based and is qualitatively different from the representation of phonetic information.
