- Abstract
Language production has often been described as impaired in psychiatric diseases such as in psychosis. Nevertheless, little is known about the characteristics of linguistic difficulties and their relation with other cognitive domains in patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP), either affective or non-affective. To deepen our comprehension of linguistic profile in FEP, 133 patients with FEP (95 non-affective, FEP-NA; 38 affective, FEP-A) and 133 healthy controls (HC) were assessed with a narrative discourse task. Speech samples were systematically analyzed with a well-established multilevel procedure investigating both micro- (lexicon, morphology, syntax) and macro-linguistic (discourse coherence, pragmatics) levels of linguistic processing. Executive functioning and IQ were also evaluated. Both linguistic and neuropsychological measures were secondarily implemented with a machine learning approach in order to explore their predictive accuracy in classifying participants as FEP or HC. Compared to HC, FEP patients showed language production difficulty at both micro- and macro-linguistic levels. As for the former, FEP produced shorter and simpler sentences and fewer words per minute, along with a reduced number of lexical fillers, compared to HC. At the macro-linguistic level, FEP performance was impaired in local coherence, which was paired with a higher percentage of utterances with semantic errors. Linguistic measures were not correlated with any neuropsychological variables. No significant differences emerged between FEP-NA and FEP-A (p≥0.02, after Bonferroni correction). Machine learning analysis showed an accuracy of group prediction of 76.36% using language features only, with semantic variables being the most impactful. Such a percentage was enhanced when paired with clinical and neuropsychological variables. Results confirm the presence of language production deficits already at the first episode of the illness, being such impairment not related to ot

- Abstract
Sources of uncertainty (i.e., internal variability, model and scenario) in Atlantic Niño variability projections were quantified in 49 models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Phases 5 (CMIP5) and 6 (CMIP6). By the end of the twenty‐first century, the ensemble mean change in Atlantic Niño variability is −0.07 ± 0.10˚C, with 80% of CMIP models projecting a decrease, and representing a 16% reduction relative to the 1981–2005 ensemble mean. Models' projections depict a large spread, with variability changes ranging from 0.23˚C to −0.50˚C. Internal variability is the main source of uncertainty until 2045 but model uncertainty dominates thereafter, eventually explaining up to 80% of the total uncertainty. The scenario uncertainty remains low (<1%) throughout the twenty‐first century. The total uncertainty on Atlantic Niño variability projections is not improved when considering only CMIP models with a realistic zonal equatorial Atlantic sea surface temperature gradient. Plain Language Summary Sources of uncertainty (i.e., internal variability, model and scenario) in future projections of the Atlantic Niño variability were evaluated in global coupled models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Phases 5 (CMIP5) and 6 (CMIP6). Relative to 1981–2005, models' projections depict a large spread, ranging from increasing Atlantic Niño variability by up to 0.23˚C to decreasing by up to −0.50˚C. By the end of the twenty‐first century, the ensemble mean Atlantic Niño variability change is −0.07 ± 0.10˚C with 80% of the global coupled models simulating a decrease. This change in the ensemble mean Atlantic Niño variability, relative to the period 1981–2005, represents a 16% reduction. During the first four decades of projection, the internal variability is the main contributor to the total uncertainty; thereafter model uncertainty dominates and explains up to 80% of the total uncertainty at the end of the twenty‐first century. - Abstract
An important feature of ocean circulation in the Atlantic is the cross-equatorial and northward transport of water masses at the surface and southward transport at the bottom of the ocean by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). However, the link between the AMOC and tropical Atlantic variability remain poorly understood. This is partly due lack of long-term observations of the AMOC, with the longest direct measurements available since 2004. Here we construct a dynamic sea-level proxy of the AMOC variability during the twentieth century, which is strongly correlated with the AMOC index during the observational period from 2005-2019 (r=0.50; p=1.48×10-9). This sea-level proxy exhibits a 10-15 year periodicity similar to the pan-Atlantic Decadal Oscillation (ADO) – the north-south bands of alternate anomalies in surface-ocean temperatures with the maximum variance over the tropical Atlantic, and winds from colder bands to the warmer. The sea level-derived proxy leads the ADO pattern by several years, through the interactions of overturning and gyre circulations with Kelvin wave anomalies that propagate from the North Atlantic to the low latitudes and by the thermocline feedback in the Atlantic cold tongue region. The peak of the sea surface temperature variability in the tropical Atlantic in turn drives inter-hemispheric atmospheric teleconnections represented by negative North Atlantic Oscillation phase over the North Atlantic. These findings imply that, rather than a passive role postulated by the prevailing thermodynamic paradigm, AMOC-related ocean circulation plays an active role in ADO variability.

Results confirm the presence of language production deficits already at the first episode of the illness, being such impairment not related to other cognitive domains. The high accuracy obtained by the linguistic set of features in classifying groups support the use of machine learning methods in neuroscience investigations.

We describe a new, state-of-the-art, Earth System Regional Climate Model (RegCM-ES), which includes the coupling between the atmosphere, ocean, and land surface, as well as a hydrological and ocean biogeochemistry model, with the capability of using a variety of physical parameterizations. The regional coupled model has been implemented and tested over some of the COordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) domains and more regional settings featuring climatically important coupled phenomena. Regional coupled ocean-atmosphere models can be especially useful tools to provide information on the mechanisms of air-sea interactions and feedbacks occurring at fine spatial and temporal scales. RegCM-ES shows a good representation of precipitation and SST fields over the domains tested, as well as realistic simulations of coupled air-sea processes and interactions. The RegCM-ES model, which can be easily implemented over any regional domain of interest, is open source, making it suitable for usage by the broad scientific community.

- Abstract
We evaluate the mean circulation patterns, water mass distributions, and tropical dynamics of the North and Equatorial Pacific Ocean based on a suite of global ocean-sea ice simulations driven by the CORE-II atmospheric forcing from 1963-2007. The first three moments (mean, standard deviation and skewness) of sea surface height and surface temperature variability are assessed against observations. Large discrepancies are found in the variance and skewness of sea surface height and in the skewness of sea surface temperature. Comparing with the observation, most models underestimate the Kuroshio transport in the Asian Marginal seas due to the missing influence of the unresolved western boundary current and meso-scale eddies. In terms of the Mixed Layer Depths (MLDs) in the North Pacific, the two observed maxima associated with Subtropical Mode Water and Central Mode Water formation coalesce into a large pool of deep MLDs in all participating models, but another local maximum associated with the formation of Eastern Subtropical Mode Water can be found in all models with different magnitudes. The main model bias of deep MLDs results from excessive Subtropical Mode Water formation due to inaccurate representation of the Kuroshio separation and of the associated excessively warm and salty Kuroshio water. Further water mass analysis shows that the North Pacific Intermediate Water can penetrate southward in most models, but its distribution greatly varies among models depending not only on grid resolution and vertical coordinate but also on the model dynamics. All simulations show overall similar large scale tropical current system, but with differences in the structures of the Equatorial Undercurrent. We also confirm the key role of the meridional gradient of the wind stress curl in driving the equatorial transport, leading to a generally weak North Equatorial Counter Current in all models due to inaccurate CORE-II equatorial wind fields. Most models show a larger interior

- Abstract
In the framework of the second phase of the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments (CORE-II), we present an analysis of the representation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and Southern Ocean meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in a suite of seventeen global ocean–sea ice models. We focus on the mean, variability and trends of both the ACC and MOC over the 1958–2007 period, and discuss their relationship with the surface forcing. We aim to quantify the degree of eddy saturation and eddy compensation in the models participating in CORE-II, and compare our results with available observations, previous fine-resolution numerical studies and theoretical constraints. Most models show weak ACC transport sensitivity to changes in forcing during the past five decades, and they can be considered to be in an eddy saturated regime. Larger contrasts arise when considering MOC trends, with a majority of models exhibiting significant strengthening of the MOC during the late 20th and early 21st century. Only a few models show a relatively small sensitivity to forcing changes, responding with an intensified eddy-induced circulation that provides some degree of eddy compensation, while still showing considerable decadal trends. Both ACC and MOC interannual variabilities are largely controlled by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Based on these results, models are clustered into two groups. Models with constant or two-dimensional (horizontal) specification of the eddy-induced advection coefficient κ show larger ocean interior decadal trends, larger ACC transport decadal trends and no eddy compensation in the MOC. Eddy-permitting models or models with a three-dimensional time varying κ show smaller changes in isopycnal slopes and associated ACC trends, and partial eddy compensation. As previously argued, a constant in time or space κ is responsible for a poor representation of mesoscale eddy effects and cannot properly simulate the sensitivity of the ACC and MOC to ch

- Abstract
We characterise the representation of the Southern Ocean water mass structure and sea ice within a suite of 15 global ocean-ice models run with the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiment Phase II (CORE-II) protocol. The main focus is the representation of the present (1988–2007) mode and intermediate waters, thus framing an analysis of winter and summer mixed layer depths; temperature, salinity, and potential vorticity structure; and temporal variability of sea ice distributions. We also consider the interannual variability over the same 20 year period. Comparisons are made between models as well as to observation-based analyses where available. The CORE-II models exhibit several biases relative to Southern Ocean observations, including an underestimation of the model mean mixed layer depths of mode and intermediate water masses in March (associated with greater ocean surface heat gain), and an overestimation in September (associated with greater high latitude ocean heat loss and a more northward winter sea-ice extent). In addition, the models have cold and fresh/warm and salty water column biases centred near 50°S. Over the 1988–2007 period, the CORE-II models consistently simulate spatially variable trends in sea-ice concentration, surface freshwater fluxes, mixed layer depths, and 200–700 m ocean heat content. In particular, sea-ice coverage around most of the Antarctic continental shelf is reduced, leading to a cooling and freshening of the near surface waters. The shoaling of the mixed layer is associated with increased surface buoyancy gain, except in the Pacific where sea ice is also influential. The models are in disagreement, despite the common CORE-II atmospheric state, in their spatial pattern of the 20-year trends in the mixed layer depth and sea-ice.

- Abstract
There is a growing number of observation-based measures of sea level related patterns with the advent of the Argo floats (since the early 2000s) and satellite altimeters (since 1993). These measures provide a valuable means to evaluate aspects of global model simulations, such as the global ocean-sea ice simulations run as part of the interannual Coordinated Ocean- ice Reference Experiments Griffies et al. (2009), Danabasoglu et al. (2013). In addition, these CORE-II simulations provide a means for evaluating the likely mechanisms causing sea level variations, particularly when models with different skill are compared against each other and observations. We have conducted an assessment of CORE-II simulations from 13 model configurations Griffies et al. (2013), with a focus on their ability to capture observed trends in ocean heat content as well as the corresponding dynamic sea level over the period 1993- 2007. Here, we provide a synopsis of the assessment.

- Abstract
We provide an assessment of sea level simulated in a suite of global ocean-sea ice models using the interannual CORE atmospheric state to determine surface ocean boundary buoyancy and momentum fluxes. These CORE-II simulations are compared amongst themselves as well as to observation-based estimates. We focus on the final 15 years of the simulations (1993–2007), as this is a period where the CORE-II atmospheric state is well sampled, and it allows us to compare sea level related fields to both satellite and in situ analyses. The ensemble mean of the CORE-II simulations broadly agree with various global and regional observation-based analyses during this period, though with the global mean thermosteric sea level rise biased low relative to observation-based analyses. The simulations reveal a positive trend in dynamic sea level in the west Pacific and negative trend in the east, with this trend arising from wind shifts and regional changes in upper 700 m ocean heat content. The models also exhibit a thermosteric sea level rise in the subpolar North Atlantic associated with a transition around 1995/1996 of the North Atlantic Oscillation to its negative phase, and the advection of warm subtropical waters into the subpolar gyre. Sea level trends are predominantly associated with steric trends, with thermosteric effects generally far larger than halosteric effects, except in the Arctic and North Atlantic. There is a general anti-correlation between thermosteric and halosteric effects for much of the World Ocean, associated with density compensated changes.

- Abstract
Simulation characteristics from eighteen global ocean–sea-ice coupled models are presented with a focus on the mean Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and other related fields in the North Atlantic. These experiments use inter-annually varying atmospheric forcing data sets for the 60-year per- iod from 1948 to 2007 and are performed as contributions to the second phase of the Coordinated Ocean- ice Reference Experiments (CORE-II). The protocol for conducting such CORE-II experiments is summa- rized. Despite using the same atmospheric forcing, the solutions show significant differences. As most models also differ from available observations, biases in the Labrador Sea region in upper-ocean potential temperature and salinity distributions, mixed layer depths, and sea-ice cover are identified as contribu- tors to differences in AMOC. These differences in the solutions do not suggest an obvious grouping of the models based on their ocean model lineage, their vertical coordinate representations, or surface salinity restoring strengths. Thus, the solution differences among the models are attributed primarily to use of different subgrid scale parameterizations and parameter choices as well as to differences in vertica and horizontal grid resolutions in the ocean models. Use of a wide variety of sea-ice models with diverse snow and sea-ice albedo treatments also contributes to these differences. Based on the diagnostics con- sidered, the majority of the models appear suitable for use in studies involving the North Atlantic, but some models require dedicated development effort.

The propagation of planetary, or Rossby, waves is studied under the effects of different atmospheric couplings. First, analytical matchings are formulated in which a Rossby wave is coupled to different thermodynamical atmospheres, from a simple heat flux condition to the inclusion of an atmospheric energy balance model. The effects on the vertical structure and phase speed of the first modes are negligible. However, it is shown that for the latter case an unstable mode appears. This growing mode, of decadal period and growth rate, has no physical source of energy and therefore is a result of the oversimplified atmosphere employed. In fact, adding physics to the atmospheric model results in a gradual disappearance of the instability. The possibility of observing similar unphysical modes in climate studies, where oversimplified models are adopted, is raised.Next, a quasi-geostrophic coupled model is used in order to analyse the oceanic Rossby wave characteristics under the influence of a full atmosphere. The idealised eddy-resolving model consists of an ocean basin underneath a channel atmosphere, and different configurations for the oceanic component are used. The Rossby waves are observed to propagate faster than both the classical linear theory (unperturbed solution) and the phase speed estimates when the effect of the zonal mean flow is added (perturbed solution). Moreover, using statistical eigentechniques, a coupled Rossby wave is identified, bearing the characteristics of the coupled mode proposed by Goodman and Marshall (1999). It is argued that the atmospheric coupling is capable of adding an extra speed up to the wave; in fact, when the waves are simply forced, their propagation speed approaches the perturbed solution. The waves are observed to break into faster waves, as suggested by LaCasce and Pedlosky (2004), although their resistance to dissipation and instabilities processes is enhanced by the atmospheric coupling, which provides extra energy to the initial wave during its propagation. The development of a coupled Rossby wave is found to be possible in a basin of the dimensions of both the Pacific and the Atlantic ocean, and its characteristics and strength vary little when the tridimensional accuracy of the ocean is increased.

Background Multi-element interventions for first-episode psychosis (FEP) are promising, but have mostly been conducted in non-epidemiologically representative samples, thereby raising the risk of underestimating the complexities involved in treating FEP in ‘real-world’ services. Methods/Design The Psychosis early Intervention and Assessment of Needs and Outcome (PIANO) trial is part of a larger research program (Genetics, Endophenotypes and Treatment: Understanding early Psychosis - GET UP) which aims to compare, at 9 months, the effectiveness of a multi-component psychosocial intervention versus treatment as usual (TAU) in a large epidemiologically based cohort of patients with FEP and their family members recruited from all public community mental health centers (CMHCs) located in two entire regions of Italy (Veneto and Emilia Romagna), and in the cities of Florence, Milan and Bolzano. The GET UP PIANO trial has a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled design. The randomized units (clusters) are the CMHCs, and the units of observation are the centers’ patients and their family members. Patients in the experimental group will receive TAU plus: 1) cognitive behavioral therapy sessions, 2) psycho-educational sessions for family members, and 3) case management. Patient enrolment will take place over a 1-year period. Several psychopathological, psychological, functioning, and service use variables will be assessed at baseline and follow-up. The primary outcomes are: 1) change from baseline to follow-up in positive and negative symptoms’ severity and subjective appraisal; 2) relapse occurrences between baseline and follow-up, that is, episodes resulting in admission and/or any case-note records of re-emergence of positive psychotic symptoms. The expected number of recruited patients is about 400, and that of relatives about 300. Owing to the implementation of the intervention at the CMHC level, the blinding of patients, clinicians, and raters is not possible, but every effort will be made to preserve the independency of the raters. We expect that this study will generate evidence on the best treatments for FEP, and will identify barriers that may hinder its feasibility in ‘real-world’ clinical settings, patient/family conditions that may render this intervention ineffective or inappropriate, and clinical, psychological, environmental, and service organization predictors of treatment effectiveness, compliance, and service satisfaction. 34. Coupled interannual Rossby waves in a quasigeostrophic ocean–atmosphere model

- Abstract
Rossby wave propagation is investigated in the framework of an idealized middle-latitude quasigeostrophic coupled ocean–atmosphere model. The Rossby waves are observed to propagate faster than both the classical linear theory (unperturbed solution) and the phase speed estimates when the effect of the zonal mean flow is added (perturbed solution). Moreover, using statistical eigentechniques, a clear coupled Rossby wave mode is identified between a baroclinic oceanic Rossby wave and an equivalent barotropic atmospheric wave. The spatial phase relationship of the coupled wave is similar to the one predicted by Goodman and Marshall, suggesting a positive ocean–atmosphere feedback. It is argued that oceanic Rossby waves can be efficiently coupled to the overlying atmosphere and that the atmospheric coupling is capable of adding an extra speedup to the wave; in fact, when the ocean is simply forced, the Rossby wave propagation speed approaches the perturbed solution.

- Abstract
This paper shows the existence of a growing planetary-wave-like ocean mode, with a decadal period and growth rate, which appears when a stratified, diffusive ocean is coupled to a simple atmosphere via an energy balance model (EBM). Such modes are not found when simpler surface ocean conditions are applied. The mode is low order in the vertical and, because of its slow growth, is likely to be observed in Earth System Models using an EBM in place of a fuller set of atmospheric dynamics. There is no apparent physical energy source for such a mode, and therefore it should not be expected to arise in such a model. The mode is analysed through a hierarchy of simple models, which differ only through their surface boundary condition.

- Abstract
The possibility of observing similar unphysical modes in climate studies, where oversimplified models are adopted, is raised. Next, a quasi-geostrophic coupled model is used in order to analyse the oceanic Rossby wave characteristics under the influence of a full atmosphere. The waves are observed to break into faster waves, as suggested by LaCasce and Pedlosky (2004), although their resistance to dissipation and instabilities processes is enhanced by the atmospheric coupling, which provides extra energy to t

- Abstract
The pupal parasitoid Brachymeria intermedia(Nees) was reared from egg to fecund adult on various veal homogenate‐based artificial diets. For every replicate 12.12 ml of each diet were used. Four diets were tested first. Two media, one devoid of and one supplemented with 1 ml Galleria mellonellapupal extract, contained 0.19 g wheat germ and 0.19 g yeast extract each. The other two, one added with and the other devoid of host extract, contained 0.38 g yeast extract each and no wheat germ. All diets also contained chicken egg yolk (1.1 and 0.8 ml in the diets without and with host extract, respectively). The amount of yeast extract was seen to have no significant effect on any of the developmental parameters considered. The replacement of wheat germ with yeast extract was therefore not convenient, considering that the former is far more economical than the latter. Pupal extract was instead found to have a significant effect on pupal and adult yields. The highest adult yield (= 53.2%) was obtained on the diet supplemented with 0.38 g yeast extract and containing host pupal extract. A further four media, each comprising a different kind of material derived from G. mellonella, were subsequently tested. Adult yields were such as to suggest the possibility of replacing pupal with larval extract in the diets as the latter is easier to prepare since there are no cocoons to be removed. In contrast, when the diets were supplemented with larval or pupal homogenate, adult yields dramatically dropped. When B. intermediawas reared in groups rather than individually, most larvae died before attaining maturity. Only two parasitoids, in two different replicates, emerged as adults.

- Abstract
The tachinid Exorista larvarum(L.), a polyphagous gregarious larval endoparasitoid of Lepidoptera, was reared from egg to fecund adult on media containing commercial meat homogenates for babies as the main ingredient. Four media, each containing a diverse homogenate supplemented with extract of Galleria mellonellaL. pupae, were tested first. Despite the difference in nutrient content, the kind of homogenate did not significantly affect the adult yields (30.2 to 40.7%) or puparial weights. Two other diets free of host materials (I and II) were then tested. Both were based on Gerber veal homogenate combined with different amounts of yeast extract and chicken egg yolk and were supplemented with wheat germ (I) or saccharose (II). Adult yields (28.7 to 32.7%) and puparial weights did not differ significantly between the two diets. Fly longevity and fecundity of the females obtained on diet I were comparable to those of the females emerged from puparia formed in G. mellonellalarvae. Male and female puparial weights were, however, higher and development times longer on the diet than in the host.

- Abstract
The pupal parasitoidBrachymeria intermedia(Nees) was reared from the egg to adult stage on artificial media based on commercial meat homogenates for babies (Plasmon®), either with or devoid of host components. Six media containing 80% homogenate and 20% extract ofGalleria mellonellaL. pupae were tested first. Two types of homogenates, intended for babies at the beginning of weaning (a) and well on in weaning (b), were utilized. Media were based on beef, veal and chicken meat, 3 on a-homogenates and 3 on b-homogenates. A significantly higher percentage of parasitoids developed as mature larvae on the a- than on the b-homogenate based diets. This was presumably related to the higher protein, carbohydrate, lipid and calorie level of the a- than of the b- homogenates. Diet veal-a produced the best mean adult yield (27.4%). Other two diets based on the veal-a homogenate were then tested. The first, composed of 80% homogenate, 10% host pupal extract, 7% chicken egg yolk, 1.5% yeast extract and 1.5% wheat germ, produced a mean adult yield of 66.7%, similar to that obtained inG. mellonellapupae. On the second medium, devoid of host components and containing 85% veal-a homogenate, 10% chicken egg yolk, 2.5% wheat germ and 2.5% yeast extract, the mean adult yield was 22.5%. In all media, the adults obtained were viable and fecund.
