Transcript of an interview with a retired coal miner of Lincoln County, WV. Mosley lived and worked in the coal fields of Logan County, WV and Pike County, KY most of his life. He started to work in 1929 when mining was still done by pick and shovel and retired in the early sixties when mining had become mechanized. He describes the changes in mining technology he experienced and the effect of unionization in the coal mining region of southern West Virginia.

Surveys of rural residents conducted by WVU Agricultural Experiment Station. Inquiries about farm land conditions, size of operations, profitability and the respondents opinions about the local community and its economic prospects. The 1924 survey was taken only in the Easton-Avery section of Monongalia County and contains an accompanying map with individual family farms number coded. The 1958 survey, a selection from around the state, is more indicative of demographics especially of out migration of family members to urban areas.

This diary shows the daily activities of a farm family in Short Run, Maryland. The entries are continuous from 1 January 1915 to 21 July 1915 and intermittent from 22 July until the final entry on 2 October. In the diary Wilson discusses weather conditions, farm work performed by himself and his siblings, trips to neighboring towns and to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland, illnesses and death, and social occasions.

A compilation of West Virginia farm business records and year end analyses. This electronic service was provided for cooperating farmers by ELFAC (an acronym for Easy, Low Cost, Flexible, Accurate, Complete) sponsored in cooperation with land grant institutions by the (USDA) U. Stiles, Reminiscences of Monongalia County, 1910-1916. The boyhood memoirs of an elderly Monongalia County resident, entitled, "Our Daily Bread" relating rural life in the early years of the twentieth century. He describes in detail seeing the first automobile in the western part of the county. Also contains some genealogical notes on William White and family, White is the surveyor who named that portion of the county, Battelle District.

Papers of William Price (1803-1881), a Monongalia County, West Virginia, resident, member of the Wheeling Convention, and state legislator, 1869-1873. Includes correspondence, diaries, notebooks, legal documents, and pictures. The correspondence, 1858-1912, concerns farming, the cattle business, and observations on the Civil War. Land papers also relate to Greene County, Pennsylvania. There is a diary and memo book of William Price, 1861-1863, containing two references to his membership in the Wheeling Convention, 20 June 1861; an account book, 1885-1890; a journal maintained by Price during two business trips to Philadelphia in 1865; and a novel, "Charlotte Temple" published in 1807 owned by Mary Swon, with her family history inscribed on the back pages. Gatewood Papers, 1801-1816, 1855-1919. Correspondence, diary, and farm account book of a Confederate officer and Pocahontas County cattleman and farmer. The correspondence deals primarily with Gatewood's activities as adjutant general and chief of staff of the West Virginia Division, United Confederate Veterans. The Civil War diary, 11 March-15 December 1865, covers action of Company F, Eleventh Virginia Cavalry, "Laurel Brigade," Rosser Cavalry Division, from Staunton to Appomattox. The farm account book, 1866-1869, also contains an account of Gatewood's Civil War experiences, including fighting in western Virginia and Jones' northwestern Virginia raid of 1863. The account book, 1801-1805, 1816, pertains to the John Rodgers estate. There are a few papers of Gatewood's father, Samuel V. Gatewood. Sketch of a western Virginia pioneer who left Loudon County, Virginia when his mother and stepfather emigrated (ca.1816) and settled in Mercer's Bottom in Mason County. The sketch was written by one of the subject's children and has anecdotes about Neale's boyhood, parents, and frontier farming. This family history contains a life story of Nancy Maria Smith Neale, William's mother, a woman of vision and independence.

The bulk of these papers deal with Miss Jarvis' work as the founder of Mother's Day, her attempts to persuade state governors to issue proclamations to establish the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, and her later protests against the commercialization of the holiday, as well as the efforts of other organizations to promote Mother's Day. There are a few papers of her father, Grandville E. Jarvis; some correspondence and legal papers concerned with the Jarvis coal and farm lands in Taylor County and real estate in Philadelphia, particularly the properties of her brother, Claud[e], owner of the Quaker City Cab Company. Some early papers document Miss Jarvis' activities in the Literary Department of a Philadelphia insurance company. Several letters and financial papers of the McClaugherty family of Princeton, West Virginia, pertaining to family affairs, estate settlements, and the early years of the Civil War. An 1861 letter from George B. Schmitz of the 24th Virginia Infantry written to Hugh McClaugherty chiefly describes the battle of Bull Run in July 1861 and the status of Confederate troops after the battle. A February 1863 letter from Edward McClaugherty of the 17th Virginia Cavalry to his father, John McClaugherty, primarily describes his recovery in a home near Salem, Virginia, and the health of his regiment. Collection also includes a few financial documents (receipts related to dry goods and taxes paid on slaves and horses and estate matters) and letters from the McClaugherty family from the 1840s, 1850s, and early 1870s. Major topics of these letters include health, weather, and news of family members.

Papers of the Goff family of Harrison County, West Virginia. This collection is minimally processed. Includes the papers of Nathan Goff III, grandson of Nathan Goff Jr. (1843-1920), as well as his daughter Laura Ellen Goff Fireman (later Davis). Also includes correspondence of Howard Caplan, the Administrator of the Estate of Nathan Goff III, and H. Dotson Cather, the brother-in-law of Mrs. Goff Fireman Davis who may have been involved in Goff's estate. Formats in the collection include correspondence, ephemera, programs, invitations, plats, photographs, clippings, and much more. Nathan Goff's correspondence includes mostly business but also some family and personal correspondence. Correspondence includes both incoming and typescript copies of outgoing letters, as well as a few cards and telegrams. Subjects include mines, farming, livestock (especially sheep and horses, with special concentration of Clydesdale material), politics, land, wells, oil and gas leases, Citizens Publishing Company, the Waldo Hotel, the Nicholas Land Company, West Virginia Consolidated Coal Company and its Hardman Mine, Illinois State Fair, engineering, books, finances, and more. Mrs. Goff Fireman Davis's correspondence mainly concerns her father's estate. There are also two folders of material pertaining to Nathan Goff Jr., mostly correspondence and financial information (box 1, folders 17-18, 1884-1919). Receipts and land records of two generations of the Weltons in Hampshire and Hardy counties, West Virginia, including papers of Job, Aaron, Archibald, and A. Archibald Welton. There is a Fairfax deed for eighty-four acres in Hampshire County in 1770, and a pocket diary of A.A. Welton, for 1880-1881, which records daily farm chores, livestock sales, and the like.

Crouch Papers, 1802-1899. The business papers of Moses H. Crouch, a farmer and miller who lived near Huttonsville, Randolph County, West Virginia, in the nineteenth century. Chiefly contains receipts, deeds, promissory notes, and other financial and legal documents related to Crouch's business and property from the 1840s to the 1890s. Receipts and account information document the sale of dry goods and textiles, including meat, coffee, tobacco, sugar, tea, oatmeal, peaches, silk, thread, and chambray. Legal materials include deeds, insurance information, tax documents, and other information related to land tracts owned by Crouch. While most of the materials are Moses Crouch's papers, there are also documents for George Long, Andrew Crouch, and John Crouch. Early materials from 1802, 1821, and 1830 consist of land indentures. Also included are two account ledgers, from 1839 to 1899 and from 1853 to 1870, that record purchases of grains such as flour, corn, flax, and wheat by the pound and by the bushel and note payments on accounts.

Personal and business papers of the Lewis family, mainly of John D. (1800-1882), Charles C., Sr. (b.1839), and Charles C., Jr. (b.1865), of Kanawha County. For the period 1825-1875 there are papers of various members of the Ruffner, Dickinson, and Wilson families of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, and other states. The business papers relate to farming operations, the purchase and sale of slaves, salt manufacturing and trade, the Old Sweet Springs Company, coal, iron, oil, lumbering, railroads, and real estate in Kanawha, Clay, Boone, Fayette, and Nicholas counties. There are newspaper clippings, speeches, and other papers reflecting the Lewis' interests in the Democratic Party in the period 1914-1920. Settlement papers and correspondence regarding the estates of John D. Lewis, and Joel, Daniel, and Andrew Ruffner are in the collection. The personal papers include diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, and letters. Travel accounts in the United States, South America, and Europe are given in the correspondence, as well as comments on schools in West Virginia and Virginia; the building of a church in Kanawha County in 1834; missionary work in Colombia, South America, 1874-1875; Civil War and postwar conditions in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Missouri; conditions at Camp Chase, in the Civil War; and material relating to World War I.

Papers of a Preston County farmer, merchant, and licensed exhorter of the Methodist Episcopal Church who served in the state legislature in the years 1870-1876. There are letters of H. William Davenport Wayt (1846-1913) of Marshall County, West Virginia, was a country doctor in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Collection contains papers of William Davenport Wayt and several of his descendants, including his son, William Blaine Wayt (1879-1956), a teacher and farmer; his daughter, Jessie Logan Wayt (1888-1965), a teacher; and his granddaughter, Margaret Wayt DeBolt (1931-2009), a journalist, author, and genealogist, all of Marshall County. Materials include diaries for several family members; transcripts of letters; miscellaneous manuscript materials, literary books and clippings; church and farm books; and articles from the Hillbilly newspaper that relate to the Wayt family in particular and to life in West Virginia in general. Twenty-two volumes of William Blaine Wayt's diaries form the bulk of this collection and document his life from his youth in the 1890s to his death in 1956, offering details of his family's daily activities and providing insight into the life of a rural West Virginia farmer and teacher during the first half of the 20th century. Collection also includes several files of notes and materials collected by Gregory Winters during his research on the Wayt family. There is also an addendum of Wayt family material consisting mostly of photographs. See scope and content note for details.

The early correspondence relates to the purchase and sale of livestock and the driving of herds to markets in the east. There is correspondence from members of the family in the vicinity of Chillicothe, Ohio, relating to farm and market conditions and commenting on travel from Hardy County to Ohio. There are also references to river traffic on the Scioto and Ohio rivers and to the quantity of merchandise being shipped to the New Orleans market. There are account statements for school fees, books, and general school expenses for several years in the period, 1809-1822, and 1870; a herd pedigree book, 1851-1861; and poultry and cattle records and accounts, 1913-1929.
