Abstract

Polluted waters are complex systems with many different co‐existing contaminants that make their simultaneous removal a very challenging task. To address this problem, all‐in‐one ad/ab‐sorbent with unique combination of interfacial properties and multiple surface chemistry is developed to simultaneously and efficiently remove several pollutants including heavy metals, dyes, oils, and organic solvents. By mimicking the wetting micro‐topology of a darkling beetle with a combined hydrophilic‐hydrophobic surface, a new bioinspired adsorbent, graphene biopolymer foam (Alg‐Fe3O4‐rGO‐4S) for removal of multiple water pollutants is engineered by combining alginate (Alg) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) functionalized with tetrathiol that is also decorated with iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4). This concept is first proved by single pollutant removal, showing adsorption capacity of 789.7 ± 36 mg/g for methylene blue (MB), 107.0 ± 2.1 mg/g for Hg (II), 73.5 ± 0.7 mg/g for Cu (II), and rapid oil‐water separation with high sorption capacity (11–18 g/g). A remarkable performance for simultaneous removal of their mixtures in milli‐Q, river, and sea water is demonstrated with efficiency for MB (≈90%), Cu (II) (>99.99%) and Hg (II) (100%) and rapid (≈30 s) uptake of organic solvents and oils. Abstract

End-stage liver disease is a medical problem with high morbidity and mortality. We have investigated the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of using autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as a treatment.Eight patients (four hepatitis B, one hepatitis C, one alcoholic, and two cryptogenic) with end-stage liver disease having Model for End-Stage Liver Disease scoreor =10 were included. Autologous MSCs were taken from iliac crest. Approximately, 30-50 million MSCs were proliferated and injected into peripheral or the portal vein. Liver function and clinical features were evaluated at baseline and 1, 2, 4, 8, and 24 weeks after injection.Treatment was well tolerated by all patients. Liver function improved as verified by the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, which decreased from 17.9+/-5.6 to 10.7+/-6.3 (P0.05) and prothrombin complex from international normalized ratio 1.9+/-0.4 to 1.4+/-0.5 (P0.05). Serum creatinine decreased from 114+/-35 to 80+/-18 micromol/l (P0.05). Serum albumin changed from 30+/-5 to 33+/-5 g/l and bilirubin from 46+/-29 to 41+/-31 micromol/l. No adverse effects were noted.Our data show that MSCs injection can be used for the treatment of end-stage liver disease with satisfactory tolerability. Furthermore, this treatment may improve clinical indices of liver function in end-stage liver disease.

Abstract

Heavy metals contamination in the natural waters remains an unresolved environmental challenge pressing for the development of purification technologies. This paper presents the green engineering of a new bio-sponge for heavy metals adsorption composed of alginate bio-polymeric network encapsulated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified with iron oxide nanoparticles and covalently attached multithiol (pentaerythritol tetrakis-mercaptopropionate) molecules using photoinitiated thiol-ene click chemistry. The multithiol functionalized graphene bio-sponge (SH-Graphene bio-sponge) is designed to enhance adsorption performances of heavy metals including structural approach combined with oxygen functionalities and high density of sulfur-containing groups (10.2 at % S, confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, XPS) with high binding affinity towards specific heavy metals (Cd and Pb). It was shown that the level of thiol functionalization on the graphene structure within the bio-sponge can be controlled by tuning the Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation time without adjusting the concentration of the precursors. SH-functionalized graphene bio-sponge showed outstanding adsorption capacity for Pb (II): 101.01 mg/g and Cd (II): 102.99 mg/g, outperformed commercial and literature reported adsorbents in highly competitive selectivity studies using co-existing heavy metal ions (Cu, Co, Pb and Cd) spiked- sea water. The multithiol modified bio-sponge also showcased an excellent stability and reusability feature with only 0.015 mg/L Pb (II) detected, conforming the strict United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) for lead, after five recurring cycles using mixed heavy metal ions solution and acidic eluent. Abstract

Antibacterial treatment strategies using functional nanomaterials, such as photodynamic therapy, are urgently required to combat persistent Staphylococcus aureus small colony variant (SCV) bacteria. Using a stepwise approach involving thermolysis to form β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and surface ligand exchange with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), followed by zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) coating and conversion to zinc oxide (ZnO), β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm@ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized. The direct synthesis of β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm@ZIF-8 UCNPs proved problematic due to the hydrophobic nature of the as-synthesized material, which was shown by zeta potential measurements using dynamic light scattering (DLS). To facilitate deposition of a ZnO coating, the zeta potentials of (i) as-synthesized UCNPs, (ii) calcined UCNPs, (iii) polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and (iv) CTAB-coated UCNPs were measured, which revealed the CTAB-coated UCNPs to be the most hydrophilic and the better-dispersed form in water. β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm@ZIF-8 composites formed using the CTAB-coated UCNPs were then converted into β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm@ZnO nanoparticles by calcination under carefully controlled conditions. Photoluminescence analysis confirmed the upconversion process for the UCNP core, which allows the β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm@ZnO nanoparticles to photogenerate reactive oxygen species (ROS) when activated by near-infrared (NIR) radiation. The NIR-activated UCNPs@ZnO nanoparticles demonstrated potent efficacy against both Staphylococcus aureus (WCH-SK2) and its associated SCV form (0.67 and 0.76 log colony forming unit (CFU) reduction, respectively), which was attributed to ROS generated from the NIR activated β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm@ZnO nanoparticles.
