6. Biomass Production and Nutritional Sustainability in Different Species of African Mahogany.

Abstract

Wood from reforestation gains market value due to its sustainable and legal origin. Planted forests in Brazil play a crucial role in economic, social and environmental aspects, with Eucalyptus and Pinus dominating the timber sector. However, non-majority species, such as those of the Khaya genus, have attracted great commercial interest due to the quality of their wood, being seen as an alternative to Brazilian mahogany. This study aimed to evaluate the biomass production of Khaya spp. stands and the nutrient uptake impacts in different harvesting scenarios. The research area is in Reserva Natural Vale (RNV) in Sooretama, Espírito Santo state, Brazil. The study was conducted 9.5 years after the planting of the Khaya spp. monoculture at a spacing of five m × five m, and the base fertilization consisted of 150 g of yoorin thermophosphate and 15 g of FTE BR 12 per seedling. The seedlings were of seminal origin, coming from different regions of Brazil and corresponding to three species: Kkaya grandifoliola C.DC (Belém-PA), Khaya ivorensis A. Chev. (Linhares-ES) and Khaya senegalensis A. Juss. (Poranguatu-GO). K. senegalensis exhibited the highest percentage of bark, while K. ivorensis was found to have the highest percentage of leaves. The biomass of the stems and branches did not vary by species. The relative biomass proportions had the following order: branches > stems > bark > leaves. The stocks of Ca and Mg were higher for K. grandifoliola, exceeding those for K. senegalensis (22.1%) for Ca and for K. ivorensis (42.3%) for Mg. The lowest nutrient uptake occurred in the scenario in which only the stem was removed, with averages of 44.17, 10.43, 21.93, 52.59 and 9.97 kg ha−1 for N, P, K, Ca and Mg, respectively. Compared to total biomass harvesting, this represents a reduction in export levels by 91.34% for N, 79.31% for P, 94.66% for K, 94.29% for Ca and 93.28% for Mg. The nutrient uptake assessment demonstrated that more conservative harvest scenarios resulted in lower nutrient losses, indicating the importance of forest management practices that prioritize soil and nutrient conservation. In summary, the findings of this study provide a solid basis for the sustainable management of Khaya spp., highlighting implications for productivity and nutrient dynamics on a small or medium scale. Abstract

The basic wood density influences the carbon stock, playing a crucial role in climate-changing global mitigation through carbon sequestration. Understanding wood carbon release depends on the Nitrogen assessment and CN ratio. Therefore, our research aimed to: (i) Compare basic density, organic carbon, nitrogen, and C/N ratio among the Khaya grandifoliola, K. ivorensis, and K. senegalensis; (2) Analyze the gradient along positions and diameter of the commercial stem; (3) Recommend the most representative sampling position for each species based on the diameter. The experimental area is located in Southeastern Brazil. Twelve average-diameter trees per species were cut down, and wood disc samples were collected at 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% commercial height. Our results show statistical differences in wood basic density among the species, and K. senegalensis has the highest basic density, 592 kg m3. There was no statistical difference in organic carbon between species and along the stem. Stem diameter instead of commercial height improved the variable studied, confirming the research hypothesis. Sampling at 17% of the commercial height, ranging to 18–22 cm stem diameters, is recommended for greater representativeness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: African mahogany species (Khaya sp.) have been introduced to Brazil gaining increasing economic interest over the last years, as they produce high quality wood for industrial applications. To this date, however, the knowledge available on the genetic basis of African mahogany plantations in Brazil is limited, which has driven this study to examine the extent of genetic diversity and structure of three cultivated species (Khaya grandifoliola, Khaya senegalensis and Khaya ivorensis) and their prospects for forest breeding. Results: In total, 115 individuals were genotyped (48 of K. grandifoliola, 34 of K. senegalensis and 33 of K. ivorensis) for 3,330 filtered neutral loci obtained from genotyping-by-sequencing for the three species. The number of SNPs varied from 2,951 in K. ivorensis to 4,754 in K. senegalensis. Multiloci clustering, principal component analysis, Bayesian structure and network analyses showed a clear genetic separation among the three species. Structure analysis also showed internal structure within each species, highlighting genetic subgroups that could be sampled for selecting distinct genotypes for further breeding, although the genetic distances are moderate to low. Conclusion: In our study, SNP markers efficiently assessed the genomic diversity of African mahogany forest plantations in Brazil. Our genetic data clearly separated the three Khaya species. Moreover, pairwise estimates of genetic distances among individuals within each species showed considerable genetic divergence among individuals. By genotyping 115 pre-selected individuals with desirable growth traits, allowed us not only to recommend superior genotypes but also to identify genetically distinct individuals for use in breeding crosses. Abstract

Background: The selection of superior genotypes and adapted to the edaphoclimatic conditions of the region of the introduction produces gains in productivity for forest stands. The objective of this study was to select progenies of Pinus spp. planted in Lavras, Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. Methods: The experimental site was located on dystrophic Haplic Cambisol. The progeny test was designed as a randomised complete block with 30 replicates and single plot. The treatments corresponded to one progeny of Pinus massoniana, three Pinus caribaea var. bahamensis and 33 Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis arranged with a 3 x 3 m spacing. The traits height (H), diameter at breast height (DBH) and crown projection area (CPA) were measured at 36 months of age. Results: The results showed that heritability in the narrow sense was 0.24 for DBH, 0.27 for H and 0.50 for CPA. The DBH and H traits showed a high-magnitude positive correlation. The P7, P15, P27, P31 and P33 progenies showed better performance than the other progenies for the evaluated traits. Direct and indirect selection showed similar gains, which favors the use of indirect selection; i.e., when selecting progenies for DBH, progenies with better performance in H are also selected. Additionally, DBH may be used at advanced ages given the difficulty of measuring height. The progeny of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis showed superior performance compared with Pinus caribaea var. bahamensis and Pinus massoniana for the region of Lavras, MG. Conclusions: This study suggests the possibility of expanding the production of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis in the region of Lavras with progenies P7, P15, P27, P31 and P33, because in the initial assessments they showed greater adaptability to the edaphoclimatic conditions. Abstract

RESUMO O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a produção de mudas de Mimosa setosa a partir do uso de diferentes combinações de substratos, sendo eles: esterco bovino, cama de frango, esterco de codorna e substrato comercial. O experimento foi conduzido no Viveiro Florestal do Centro de Ciências Agrárias e Engenharias da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, sendo montado em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC). Quando as mudas atingiram cinco meses após a semeadura foram mensurados: altura (H), diâmetro do coleto (D), relação altura/diâmetro (RHD), massa seca da parte aérea (MSPA), massa seca do sistema radicular (MSR), massa seca total (MST) e relação entre massa seca da parte aérea e massa seca do sistema radicular (RMSPAR), além do índice de qualidade de Dickson (IQD). Constatou-se que para a produção de mudas de Mimosa setosa recomenda-se a formulação constituída de 25% de substrato comercial + 35% de cama de frango + 40 de terra de subsolo, sendo essa a que proporcionou as melhores médias nas características morfológicas altura, diâmetro do coleto, relação altura/diâmetro, massa seca da parte aérea, massa seca do sistema radicular e massa seca total. ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the production of seedlings of Mimosa setosa from the use of different combinations of substrates, namely, cattle manure, poultry litter, quail manure and commercial substrate. The experiment was conducted in the Nursery Center for Agricultural Sciences, at the Federal University of Espírito Santo state, and mounted in a completely randomized design (CRD). When the seedlings reached five months after sowing, the following characteristics were measured: total height, collar diameter, plant height/collar diameter ratio, dry mass of shoot, dry mass of root, total dry mass and dry mass ratio of shoot/root dry mass, along with the Dickson quality index (IQD). It was found that, for the production of seedlings of Mimosa setosa, it is recommended a formulation consisted by 25% of commercial substrate + 35% of poultry litter + 40% of subsoil, having this one the best averages in morphological characteristics total height, collar diameter, plant height/collar diameter ratio, dry mass of shoot, dry mass of root and total dry mass.

Abstract

Few studies have focused on the in vitro multiplication methods for Eucalyptus cloeziana. In this work we developed an indirect organogenesis protocol to obtain micropropagated plants. The interactions of plant growth regulators in juvenile tissues were evaluated. Hypocotyl, cotyledon and root tissues obtained from in vitro germinated seedlings were subjected to combinations of a-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), thidiazuron (TDZ) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). In vitro callogenesis, adventitious bud induction, shoot elongation, and ex vitro survival and rooting were evaluated. Callogenic structures were observed in all evaluated tissues. Morphogenic characteristics related to the meristematic center was observed. The tissues that presented the callus mass were subcultured in a regeneration culture medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Only hypocotyl and cotyledon induced adventitious bud and shoot elongation. Hypocotyl subjected to 2.0 mg L-1 TDZ had the highest number of elongated shoots. The two tissues (i.e., hypocotyl and cotyledon) combined with thidiazuron were characterized by the ex vitro survival of microcuttings and by adventitious rooting. Results confirmed tissue culture efficiency for microplants production by indirect organogenesis from hypocotyl and cotyledon cultivated with TDZ, and its implementation can be an alternative for forest tree breeding programs of E. cloeziana. Abstract

A produção de mudas de espécies florestais nativas visa a atender aos plantios, principalmente para fins ambientais, tais como a recuperação de áreas degradadas. Para intensificar os conhecimentos sobre espécies com potencial de recuperação de áreas degradadas, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a utilização de diferentes substratos no crescimento de mudas de Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. Os tratamentos foram formulados utilizando-se lodo de esgoto, fibra de coco, vermiculita e casca de arroz in natura, além do substrato comercial. As mudas foram produzidas em tubetes com capacidade para 120 cm³. O estudo foi constituído de 14 tratamentos, com cinco repetições de cinco mudas cada, totalizando 25 plantas cada tratamento. Após 150 dias da semeadura, foram avaliadas as seguintes características nas mudas: altura; diâmetro do coleto; relação entre a altura da parte aérea e o diâmetro do coleto; massa seca da parte aérea; massa seca do sistema radicular; massa seca total; relação entre a massa seca da parte aérea e a massa seca do sistema radicular, e índice de qualidade de Dickson. Os tratamentos que continham lodo de esgoto e vermiculita em sua composição, sobretudo o tratamento T6 (60% lodo de esgoto + 40% vermiculita), proporcionaram o melhor crescimento das características morfológicas das mudas de Sesbania virgata. The native seedlings production aims to attend plantings, mainly for environmental purposes, such as the recovery of degraded areas. To enhance the knowledge about species with potential for recovery of degraded areas, this study aimed to evaluate the use of different substrates on the growth of seedlings of Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. The treatments were formulated using sewage sludge, coconut fiber, vermiculite and rice husk in natura, besides the commercial substrate. The seedlings were grown in plastic tubes with a capacity of 120 cm³. The study consisted of fourteen treatments, with five replicates of five seedlings each, in a total of 25 plants per treatment. After 150 days of sowing, the following characteristics were evaluated in seedling: height, stem base diameter, the relation between height and the stem base diameter, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, total dry matter, the relation between the shoot dry matter and root dry matter and Dickson quality index. The treatments containing sewage sludge and vermiculite in its composition, particularly the treatment T6 (60% sewage sludge + 40% vermiculite), provided the best growth of morphological characteristics of seedlings of Sesbania virgata.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of seedlings of Mimosa setosa using different combinations of renewable residues: sewage sludge, carbonized rice husks and straw of coffee in natura, and commercial substrate. The seedlings were grown in plastic tubes with capacity of 120 cm3, remaining 120 days under shadow in a greenhouse and more 30 days in rustification area. When the seedlings reached 150 days of growth it were measured the shoot height, the diameter, the ratio of shoot height and diameter, the shoot dry weight, the root dry weight, the total dry mass, the ratio dry shoot mass and root dry mass and the Dickson quality index. The data were subjected to statistical analysis (ANOVA) and the means were compared by the Scott-Knott test, at 5% probability. The substrates made with sewage sludge, carbonized rice husks and straw of coffee provided better growth of seedlings. Moreover, the treatment with 80% of sewage sludge mixed with 10% carbonized rice husks and 10% straw of coffee in natura provided the best results of the morphological characteristics evaluated, when producing Mimosa setosa seedlings. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento de mudas de Mimosa setosa com o uso de diferentes combinações de resíduos renováveis, sendo eles: lodo de esgoto, casca de arroz carbonizada e palha de café in natura, além do substrato comercial. As mudas foram produzidas em tubetes com capacidade de 120 cm3, permanecendo 120 dias na casa de sombra e mais 30 dias na área de rustificação. Quando as mudas atingiram 150 dias de crescimento avaliou-se: altura da parte aérea, diâmetro do coleto, relação entre altura da parte aérea e diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da parte aérea, massa seca do sistema radicular, massa seca total, relação massa seca da parte aérea e massa seca do sistema radicular e o índice de qualidade de Dickson. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística (ANOVA) e as médias, comparadas pelo teste Scott-Knott, ao nível de 5% de probabilidade. Os substratos formulados com lodo de esgoto (LE), casca de arroz carbonizada (CAC) e palha de café in natura (PC) propiciaram os melhores resultados das características avaliadas, sendo o tratamento com 80%LE+10%CAC+10%PC o que proporcionou as mais adequadas características morfológicas avaliadas na produção das mudas de Mimosa setosa.

38. Use of polylactic acid microvessel to obtain microplantlets of Eucalyptus microcorysthrough indirect organogenesis

Abstract

Microplants of Eucalyptus microcoryswere produced through indirect organogenesis, and the interaction of plant growth regulators (PGRs) (TDZ-thidiazuron and NAA-α-naphthalene acetic acid), juvenile tissues (cotyledon and hypocotyl) and different types of polylactic acid (PLA) microvessels on plant production were evaluated. Cotyledon-derived callus induction increased by 30–60% in all tested combinations of TDZ and NAA concentrations compared the absence of PGRs. Hypocotyl-derived callus induction was improved in most tested combinations of TDZ and NAA concentrations. Moreover, 100% callus induction from both tissues was achieved with TDZ (1, 2 and 3 mg L−1) + NAA (0 mg L−1). Bud induction from cotyledon tissues was improved with TDZ (1 and 3 mg L−1) + NAA (0 mg L−1) and from hypocotyl with TDZ (1 and 2 mg L−1) + NAA (0 mg L−1). Shoot elongation from cotyledon tissues was not improved from any combination of PGRs, whereas TDZ (1 mg L−1) + NAA (0 mg L−1), TDZ (1 mg L−1) + NAA (4 mg L−1), TDZ (2 mg L−1) + NAA (4 mg L−1) and TDZ (3 mg L−1) + NAA (2 mg L−1) improved shoot elongation from hypocotyl tissues. Adventitious rooting and acclimatization of microcuttings ranged from 40 to 70% in three of the tested microvessels. The acclimatized microcuttings had low genetic variability. Successful production of E. microcorysmicroplants was achieved in this study using hypocotyl tissue and cultivated a culture medium supplemented with TDZ and NAA, using PLA-based microvessels.
