Desire thinking is an emerging construct in the addictive behaviours literature. No research, to date, has investigated its contribution to problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence in patient samples when accounting for established predictors of addictive behaviours. The present study sought to clarify, in patient samples, the relative contribution of desire thinking in the associations between negative affect, impulsivity and thought suppression on the one hand and craving, problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence on the other. To achieve this goal, two groups of individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) (n = 370; age range = 15-67 years) and nicotine dependence (n = 365; age range = 17-75 years) were selected, and measures of negative affect, impulsivity, thought suppression, craving, desire thinking, problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence were completed by both groups. Results showed that in both groups, negative affect and thought suppression indirectly affected alcohol and nicotine craving, problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence through the mediating role of desire thinking. The present study shows the independent role of desire thinking in predicting problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence in patient samples, indicating its potential relevance for treatment.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic outbreak increasing several psychological distress, such as anxiety and phobia, and may affect patients with anxiety disorders. A scale has been recently designed to assess COVID-19-related phobic reactions named the COVID-19 Phobia Scale (C19P-S). The present study aimed to evaluate factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Persian version of the C19P-S (Persian-C19P-S) in patients with anxiety disorders and to compare COVID-19-related phobia among these patients. Three hundred patients with anxiety disorders completed the Persian-C19P-S and other scales assessing anxiety traits (e.g., the Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI), the Health Concerns Questionnaire-54 (HCQ-54), and the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4)) and COVID-19-related distress (e.g., the COVID Stress Scales (CSS) and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19)). The results showed that the Persian-C19P-S replicated the four-factor structure of the original C19P-S. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability coefficients evidenced the reliability of the scale. The validity of the scale (convergent and discriminant validity) was confirmed. Patients who had generalized anxiety and panic disorders showed higher phobic reactions related to COVID-19 than those with social anxiety disorder and specific phobia. This study indicates that the Persian version of the C19P-S is a valid scale to be used in Iranian patients with anxiety disorders to evaluate COVID-19-related phobia. Moreover, COVID-19-related phobic reactions are higher in some specific types of anxiety disorders.

The relations of childhood emotional maltreatment and alexithymia to the clinical course of bipolar disorder (BD) have been widely recognised. Difficulties in regulating emotions may explain these relationships. The current study evaluated the effects of childhood emotional maltreatment and alexithymia on depressive and manic symptoms as well as suicidal ideation in female patients with BD. Emotion dysregulation was evaluated as a mediating factor.Three hundred hospitalised female patients with a diagnosis of BD provided information regarding their history of childhood emotional maltreatment, alexithymia, difficulties in emotion regulation, depressive and manic symptoms, and suicidal ideation. A series of structural equation models (SEMs) were calculated to assess the associations between these variables.Childhood emotional abuse and difficulty in identifying feelings were indirectly associated with depressive and manic symptoms as well as suicidal ideation. This association was mediated by emotion dysregulation. This association remained significant after depressive and manic symptoms were controlled in the model.This study indicates that patients with BD who experienced emotional abuse during childhood and have difficulties identifying emotions report greater emotion dysregulation. These individuals, in turn, are more likely to experience more severe depressive and manic symptoms as well as suicidal ideation.Key pointsChildhood emotional maltreatment and emotional and clinical factors in bipolar disorder were assessed.Childhood emotional abuse indirectly affected clinical factors via emotion dysregulation.Difficulty in identifying feelings was linked to clinical factors via emotional dysregulation.Emotional dysregulation affected the links of childhood emotional maltreatment and difficulty in identifying feelings on suicidal ideation after controlling for clinical symptoms.Emotional dysregulation dimensions of impulse, strategies, and goals emerge in relation to suicidal ideation.

Negative affect may be related to alcohol-related patterns (e.g., craving and problematic alcohol use). Distress intolerance and positive and negative alcohol-related metacognitions may be underlying mechanisms in this link. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of negative affect including depressive, anxious, and stress symptoms on alcohol craving and problematic alcohol use via the paths of distress tolerance and both positive and negative alcohol-related metacognitions. Three hundred men with problematic alcohol use during the abstinence phase completed psychological and clinical measures. Results showed that craving and negative alcohol metacognitions mediated the relationship between negative affect and problematic alcohol use. Negative affect had a direct and positive effect on craving and indirect effect via distress intolerance and positive alcohol metacognitions. In turn, distress intolerance and positive alcohol metacognitions indirectly and positively affected problematic alcohol use via craving. The study indicates that distress tolerance and distinct alcohol metacognitions may be differently related to various patterns of alcohol-related problems, such that alcohol drinkers with high levels of negative affect, distress intolerance, and positive alcohol metacognitions show higher levels of craving, while high negative affect in relation to high negative alcohol metacognitions and alcohol craving is related to the perpetuation of alcohol use or problematic alcohol use. Growing research shows an association between emotional schemas and psychopathology. Therefore, the study of emotional schemas in psychiatric disorders is an important issue regarding psychopathology. Also, emotional processes are important factors in relation to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but experimentally no study has examined the relations of emotional schemas to obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom dimensions in people with OCD. The aims of this study were to compare emotional schemas between people with OCD and non-clinical control participants and to investigate the relationships between emotional schemas and OC symptom dimensions in OCD. Eighty individuals with OCD completed the Leahy Emotional Schema Scale (LESS) and measures of clinical characteristics. Results showed that people with OCD had higher scores on the maladaptive emotional schemas of guilt and uncontrollability than non-clinical control group. Non-clinical control participants had higher scores on the adaptive emotional schema of higher values than people with OCD. Guilt significantly predicted the OC symptom dimensions of responsibility for harm and symmetry after controlling for clinical characteristics. Uncontrollability was a significant predictor of the OC dimensions of unacceptable thoughts. These findings indicate that specific dimensions of maladaptive emotional schemas such as guilt and uncontrollability may be associated with some specific OC symptom dimensions in people with OCD. This study provided more evidence for Leahy’s emotional schema model in people with OCD.

In the present study, we investigated the role of desire thinking in problematic social media use (PSMU) whilst accounting for negative affect, impulsivity, and thought suppression. A sample of individuals with PSMU (n = 350) who used social media at least 8 h daily was recruited. Participants completed measures of negative affect, impulsivity, thought suppression, craving, desire thinking, and PSMU. Results indicated that negative affect, impulsivity, and thought suppression had significant indirect effects on craving and PSMU through the significant mediating role of desire thinking. The present study shows that desire thinking is an underlying mechanism linking established variables associated with PSMU (negative affect, impulsivity, and thought suppression) to craving and PSMU. Focusing efforts on the interruption of desire thinking may be beneficial to support individuals in disengaging from PSMU.

Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are a dysfunctional cognitive pattern that can result from maladaptive functioning during childhood. EMSs are broad patterns of memories, emotions, cognitions, and bodily sensations related to the self and others. The aims of this study were to evaluate EMSs among individuals with schizophrenia and to evaluate the relations of EMSs and clinical factors (e.g., depression, positive, and negative symptoms of psychosis) to suicidal risk (e.g., current suicidal ideation, lifetime suicide attempts). Eighty-two inpatients with schizophrenia completed the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI), and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Individuals with schizophrenia who had attempted suicide (relative to those who had not attempted suicide) had significantly higher EMSs, current suicidal ideation, and a family history of suicide attempts. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the emotional deprivation schema, positive symptoms, and depression were significantly associated with current suicidal ideation. In addition, emotional deprivation was significantly associated with lifetime suicide attempts. These findings suggest that the emotional deprivation schema, positive symptoms, and depression may be related to suicide in individuals with schizophrenia.

Desire thinking is an emerging construct which has been shown to play a role in addictive behaviors. The present study sought to validate a translated Persian version of the Desire Thinking Questionnaire (DTQ) in three groups of individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD; n = 300), nicotine dependence (n = 300), and problematic social media use (n = 300). All three groups completed the translated Persian version of the DTQ, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-15 (BIS-15), the White Bear Suppression Inventory (WBSI), and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Measures of alcohol use, nicotine dependence and problematic social media use were also collected. The results confirmed a two-factor structure of the Persian version of the DTQ with good reliability and validity in all three groups. Furthermore, both the verbal perseveration and imaginal prefiguration components of the Persian version of the DTQ were found to predict addictive behaviors beyond demographic and clinical characteristics, negative affect, impulsiveness, and thought suppression. The study confirms the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the DTQ and the role of desire thinking as an independent predictor of AUD, nicotine dependence, and the problematic use of social media.

Suicidal ideation is prevalent in patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD); but, during COVID‐19, it may be increased. The present study aimed to examine the effects of obsessive–compulsive (OC) symptom dimensions and OCD severity on suicidal ideation by considering the role of stress responses in reaction to COVID‐19 in a clinical sample of patients with OCD. In a cross‐sectional study, 304 patients with OCD completed measures of OC symptom dimensions, OCD severity, general mental health (depression and anxiety), and COVID‐19‐related stress. Results showed that after controlling for depression, anxiety, comorbidity, and lifetime suicide attempts, the OC symptom dimensions of responsibility for harm and unacceptable obsessional thoughts as well as general severity had indirect effects on suicidal ideation through the specific stress responses to COVID‐19, including traumatic stress and compulsive checking. The study shows that OCD patients with specific OC symptom dimensions and severe OCD are more likely to have suicidal ideation during the pandemic. Further, the specific stress responses to COVID‐19 may be an underlying mechanism. Clinicians should carefully assess suicidal ideation in patients with OCD who experience responsibility for harm and unacceptable thoughts, particularly during the pandemic.

The Bipolar Depression Rating Scale (BDRS) is a structured rating scale designed to assess depressive and mixed symptoms in bipolar disorder (BD). Previous studies evaluating the scale have been performed on small samples or on patients in a depressive phase, but not on patients in a mixed or manic phase. This study evaluated the Persian version of the BDRS regarding its factor structure, reliability, and validity in a large sample of Iranian women with BD in a depressive or mixed/manic phase.Three-hundred and one female BD inpatients completed the BDRS, the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), and the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS).The BDRS demonstrated a three-factor structure with good reliability. The BDRS and its psychological and somatic symptom clusters had stronger correlations with other measures of depressive symptoms than a measure of mania. The BDRS mixed symptom cluster also had a stronger correlation with a measure of mania than other measures of depression, supporting the scales' convergent and discriminant validity.The BDRS demonstrated psychometric validity in assessing depressive and mixed symptoms in Iranian women with BD in a depressive or mixed/manic phase.KEY POINTSThe Bipolar Depression Rating Scale (BDRS) was validated in Iranian women with BD.The BDRS showed a three-factor structure, similar to the original validation.The BDRS had good reliability based on Omega and test-retest coefficients.The findings provided evidence for the convergent and discriminant validity of the BDRS.

This study aimed to compare early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) among patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD, n = 120), bipolar disorder (BD, n = 100), schizophrenia (n = 82), and healthy subjects (n = 60). To collect data, the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used. The results showed that patients with OCD, BD, and schizophrenia had higher scores on all EMSs than healthy subjects. Patients with OCD had higher scores on all EMSs except for entitlement, insufficient self-control, and mistrust/abuse than individuals with schizophrenia and/or BD. The entitlement and insufficient self-control schemas were higher in BD patients than patients with OCD and schizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia scored higher on the mistrust/abuse schema than OCD and BD patients. Similar findings were also reported in subgroups with low and high depression. The findings show that some of the EMSs are specific to OCD, BD, and schizophrenia. Also, patients with OCD, BD, and schizophrenia have the highest numbers of EMSs respectively. In addition, increased depression may activate EMSs in patients with OCD, BD, and schizophrenia.

There are few studies on suicidal risk and its related factors in patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This study investigated the associations of early maladaptive schemas, OC symptom dimensions, OCD severity, depression and anxiety with suicidality (i.e., suicidal ideation and suicide attempts) in OCD patients. Sixty OCD outpatients completed the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI), the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF), the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21). 51.7% of patients had lifetime suicide attempts and 75% had suicidal ideation. OCD patients with lifetime suicide attempts exhibited significantly higher scores on early maladaptive schemas than those without such attempts. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the mistrust/abuse schema and the OC symptom dimension of unacceptable thoughts explained lifetime suicide attempts. The mistrust/abuse schema, unacceptable thoughts and depression significantly predicted suicidal ideation. These findings indicated that the mistrust/abuse schema may contribute to high suicidality in OCD patients. Also, patients suffering from unacceptable thoughts need to be assessed more carefully for warning signs of suicide.

The aim of this study was to assess the mediating effects of difficulties in emotion regulation (DER) on the relations of negative and positive affects to craving in alcoholic patients. 205 treatment-seeking alcoholic outpatients were included. DER, positive and negative affects as well as craving were evaluated by the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), the Positive/Negative Affect Scales, and the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS) respectively. Clinical factors including depression and severity of alcohol dependence were investigated by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) respectively. Results revealed that both increased negative affect and decreased positive affect indirectly influenced craving through limited access to emotion regulation strategies. It was concluded that limited access to emotion regulation strategies may be important in predicting craving for alcoholics who experience both increased negative affect and decreased positive affect. This suggests that treatment and prevention efforts focused on increasing positive affect, decreasing negative affect and teaching effective regulation strategies may be critical in reducing craving in alcoholic patients.

The aims of this study were to evaluate alexithymia subscales [i.e. difficulty in identifying feelings (DIF), difficulty in describing feelings (DDF) and externally-oriented thinking (EOT)] in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to clarify the relationships of alexithymia subscales to obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom dimensions and other clinical variables. One hundred fifteen OCD outpatients and two control groups including 80 normal controls and 100 alcoholic patients participated in this study. The data were collected by the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), the Farsi version of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (FTAS-20) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21). 60.7% of OCD patients and 48% of alcoholics were classified as alexithymics. Those with OCD revealed significantly higher scores on alexithymia and its subscales than alcoholics and normal controls. OCD patients with alexithymia showed higher means in Y-BOCS and its subscales as well as the OC dimensions of mental neutralizing and obsessing than non-alexithymics. DIF and EOT were significantly correlated with obsessing and mental neutralizing respectively. DDF and EOT were related to OCD severity. It was concluded that DIF and EOT may be specific to obsessing and mental neutralizing in OCD patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential contributing factors such as alexithymia, emotion regulation and difficulties in emotion regulation, positive/negative affects and clinical factors including severity of alcohol dependence and depression connected to high suicidality in alcohol-dependent outpatients. 205 alcohol-dependent outpatients and 100 normal controls completed the demographic questionnaire, the Persian version of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (FTAS-20), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Positive/Negative Affect Scales, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). The suicidal risk was assessed using the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) and history taking. Alcohol-dependent outpatients showed higher means in alexithymia, difficulties in emotion regulation, suppression subscale, negative affect, and suicide ideation than normal controls. Logistic regression analysis revealed that negative affect, duration of alcohol use, externally-oriented thinking, and severity of alcohol dependence explained lifetime suicide attempts. Depression, impulsivity, severity of alcohol dependence, reappraisal (reversely), externally-oriented thinking, difficulties engaging in goal-directed behaviors, and negative affect significantly predicted the suicidal risk. The findings may constitute useful evidence of the relevancies of alexithymia, emotion regulation, emotion regulation difficulties, and affects to suicidality in alcoholic patients.

The aims of this study were to evaluate alexithymia subscales and cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) of asthmatic patients and to clarify the relations of alexithymia subscales and cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) to physical symptoms (PS) and other clinical variables. 300 patients with asthma and 100 normal controls completed the Demographic Questionnaire, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), Persian version of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (FTAS-20), and Powell and Enright Physical Symptoms Inventory (PSI). Asthmatic patients had significantly higher scores on all three alexithymia subscales including difficulty in identifying feelings (DIF), difficulty in describing feelings (DDF), and externally oriented thinking (EOT) and non-adaptive CERS than normal controls. Asthmatic patients with alexithymia showed higher scores on asthma severity, non-adaptive CERS, and PS. The partial correlation revealed that PS was significantly correlated with DIF, DDF, EOT, and non-adaptive CERS. DIF, EOT, and non-adaptive CERS were significant predictors of PS. It is concluded that alexithymia subscales and non-adaptive CERS were related to PS.

The present study aimed to compare a group of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; N = 270) before and during COVID-19 on specific obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom dimensions and symptom severity. In addition, the study aimed to evaluate the associations of COVID-19-related stress responses with change in OC symptom dimensions and severity of symptoms as the result of the pandemic. Results showed that patients with OCD had higher scores on all OC symptom dimensions and symptom severity during the pandemic as compared to their scores from before the pandemic. Thus, the effect of COVID-19 is not limited to an increase in fears of contamination alone, but occurs across other symptom dimensions, including responsibility for harm, unacceptable thoughts, and symmetry. In addition, regression analyses indicated that COVID-19-related stress responses significantly predicted the observed increase in specific OC symptom dimensions and general severity, after controlling for pre-COVID-19 scores of symptoms and severity. The increase of symptoms as the result of COVID-19 might be best understood in the context of a non-specific stress-related response similar to the effects observed in non-clinical and other clinical populations., Highlights • Obsessive-compulsive dimensions and illness severity were assessed before and during COVID-19 in OCD. • COVID-19 and its related stress worsen all symptoms and general severity. • OCD is more likely to be intensified in the context of COVID-19-related stress responses.

The COVID Stress Scales (CSS) were designed to assess stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Emerging evidence indicates that people with anxiety disorders (ADs) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may be more negatively impacted by COVID-19 than those with mood disorders or healthy individuals. Accordingly, this study sought to validate the Persian CSS (Persian-CSS) and to compare COVID-19-related stress reactions among patients with specific ADs and OCD. Patients with OCD (n = 300) and ADs (n = 310) completed the Persian-CSS and other scales developed to assess anxiety-related traits and COVID-19-related distress. The Persian-CSS replicated a five-factor structure similar to the original CSS in OCD and ADs. The total CSS and its scales had good reliability and validity. Patients with generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and OCD had higher COVID-19 stress reactions than patients with social anxiety disorder and specific phobia. Patients with panic disorder had higher danger and contamination fears and xenophobia than patients with OCD. Positive and negative metacognitions regarding alcohol effects are related to drinking problems. This study aimed to validate the Persian versions of the Positive Alcohol Metacognitions Scale (Persian-PAMS) and the Negative Alcohol Metacognitions Scale (Persian-NAMS) and to assess the relations of metacognitions about alcohol use to alcohol craving and dependence in a clinical sample of males with a DSM diagnosis of alcohol dependence. Three hundred treatment-seeking males with alcohol dependence completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), the Alcohol Outcome Expectancy Questionnaire (AOEQ), the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), and the Persian-translated versions of the PAMS and NAMS. The results showed that similar to original versions of the PAMS and NAMS, the Persian version of the scales had a two-factor structure. Test-retest coefficients over a four-week interval and internal consistency showed good reliability for the Persian-PAMS and Persian-NAMS and their subscales. Predictive validity showed that positive metacognitions about alcohol use were associated with alcohol craving and dependence independent of outcome expectancies about alcohol use. The findings suggest that the Persian-PAMS and Persian-NAMS have appropriate psychometric properties in Iranian males with alcohol dependence. Results also highlight that positive metacognitions may be more related to alcohol craving and dependence relative to outcome expectancies about alcohol use.

The Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS) is a self-report measure of the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) along with four dimensions. The aim of this study was to assess the factor structure, reliability and validity of the Persian version of the DOCS (P-OCDS) among patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A total of 764 outpatients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of OCD completed the P-DOCS, the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Vancouver Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (VOCI), the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), the Penn State Worry Questionnaire-Short Form (PSWQ-SF), and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Similar to the original version of the DOCS, results showed that the P-DOCS had a four-factor structure. Also, the P-DOCS showed good reliability through calculating McDonald's Omega and test-retest. In addition, convergent and discriminant validity of the P-DOCS was confirmed through its strong and weak correlations with other OCD measures and measures of global psychological distress respectively. Findings indicate that the DOCS is a reliable scale to use in Iranian clinical samples with OCD.

The Vancouver Obsessional-Compulsive Inventory (VOCI) was validated in Iranian non-clinical individuals, but not in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Accordingly, this study aims to further evaluate the six-factor first-order and one-factor second-order structures, validity, and reliability of the scale and also to adapt this scale to the DSM-5 recommendations regarding hoarding behavior in Iranian OCD patients. Three hundred and sixty patients completed the VOCI, the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS), the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale checklist (Y-BOCS), the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R); the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ-SF), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Results showed that the six-factor first-order model of the VOCI had acceptable fit, while the five-factor first-order model had more appropriate fit by deleting the hoarding subscale's items. Also, one-factor second-order structure of the scale has been found to have an adequate fit. In addition, reliability and convergent and discriminant validity of the VOCI have been found to be good. The findings indicate that although the VOCI with the six-factor first-order and one-factor second-order structures is a valid scale in Iranian OCD patients, the VOCI adapted to the DSM-5 is more reliable to be used in Iranian community.

The aims of the present study were to investigate the dimensions of childhood trauma (CT) in patients with schizophrenia, and to predict suicidal risk (e.g., current suicidal ideation and lifetime suicide attempts) by CT dimensions and clinical factors (positive and negative symptoms and depression). Eighty-two inpatients with schizophrenia completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI); they were also administered the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).The presence of lifetime suicide attempts was assessed by structured diagnostic clinical interview. Patients with lifetime suicide attempts scored higher on sexual abuse than those without attempts after controlling for depression severity. Patients with high suicidal risk had higher scores on physical neglect than those without high risk after controlling for depression severity. Patients with high CT had higher scores on negative and positive symptoms, current suicidal ideation, and depression than those with low CT. Logistic regression analyses indicated that sexual abuse was a unique predictor of lifetime suicide attempts, and that physical neglect and depression were unique predictors of current suicidal ideation. These findings indicate that patients with schizophrenia who have experienced CT may be at increased risk for suicide.

The present study aimed to assess the associations of early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and clinical factors (hypomanic/manic and depressive symptoms) with suicidal risk (current suicidal ideation and lifetime suicide attempts) in inpatients with bipolar disorder (BD). One hundred inpatients with BD completed the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF), the Bipolar Depression Rating Scale (BDRS), the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI). 59% of patients had lifetime suicide attempts and 59% showed high suicidal risk (BSSI ≥ 6). BD patients with lifetime suicide attempts had higher scores on the entitlement and social isolation schemas, depression, and hypomanic/manic symptoms than those without such attempts. Patients with high suicidal risk had higher levels of depressive and hypomanic/manic symptoms as well as some EMSs than those without high suicidal risk. Logistic regression analyses revealed that hypomanic/manic symptoms as well as the entitlement and defectiveness schemas were significantly associated with current suicidal ideation. Also, the entitlement and social isolation schemas were associated with lifetime suicide attempts. These results suggest that the entitlement, social isolation, and defectiveness schemas may relate to suicidal risk in patients with BD.

The present research aimed to investigate the difficulties in emotion regulation (DER) among patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to predict obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom dimensions based on DER dimensions. Eighty outpatients with OCD and 80 normal controls completed the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21). OCD patients revealed significantly higher scores on DER dimensions including lack of emotional clarity, limited access to emotion regulation strategies and non-acceptance of emotional responses than healthy controls. Partial correlations indicated significant associations between OC dimensions such as checking/doubting, obsessing, mental neutralizing, and ordering with non-acceptance of emotional responses, checking/doubting with lack of emotional awareness, and ordering with limited access to emotion regulation strategies. Results indicated that non-acceptance of emotional responses was a significant predictor of checking/doubting, obsessing, mental neutralizing and ordering. These findings revealed that DER, especially non-acceptance of emotional responses, may constitute evidence to improve our understanding of OCD.

Objectives Childhood maltreatment (CM) and cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERSs) may be important in alcohol craving and dependence in alcohol-dependent individuals. The aim of this study was to evaluate direct effects of CM on the subscales of alcohol craving and alcohol dependence and its indirect effects via CERSs in individuals with a diagnosis of alcohol dependence. Methods In a cross-sectional design, 329 alcohol-dependent males completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-Short version (CERQ-Short), the Alcohol Dependence Scale (ADS), the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS), and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Results Participants with alcohol dependence had early age of onset of alcohol use (mean = 20.78 years), relatively long duration of alcohol use (mean = 11.14 years), and low education (mean = 9.55 years). Indirect effects were observed from CM to the subscales of alcohol craving and dependence only through maladaptive CERSs after adjusting for demographic and clinical factors. No direct effect was observed through CM on the subscales of alcohol craving and dependence. Conclusions Although drawing causal conclusions from the current research is impossible, the findings suggest that maladaptive CERSs may be a possible mechanism relating CM to alcohol craving and dependence in treatment-seeking alcohol-dependent individuals, while adaptive CERSs may be less important regarding this relation. However, the findings of the current study need longitudinal research.
