Background: Nursing students’ safe medication administration is a crucial aspect of ensuring patient safety. Clinical simulation is a novel teaching method applied to reduce factors threatening medication safety in the education of nursing students. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to conduct a review study in this field. Materials and Methods: The present review was conducted using keywords of education, clinical competence, medication safety, medication error, nursing student, clinical simulation, and educational strategies. Suitable articles published between 2000 and 2023 were systematically searched in various national and international online databases, including SID, Magiran, Ovid, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar in both English and Persian languages. Results: A total of 855 articles were retrieved from the initial search findings. After eliminating duplicate and irrelevant articles based on predetermined criteria, a qualitative selection was conducted using CONSORT, MMAT, and JBI critical appraisal checklists. Ultimately, a selection of 11 articles was made, specifically focusing on medication safety education for nursing students through clinical simulation. The findings showed that using clinical simulation improved medication safety and safety knowledge among nursing students. Additionally, this approach was found to enhance their competence in medication administration. Conclusions: Based on the findings, clinical simulation is a safe and effective approach for enhancing nursing students’ proficiency in medication safety and administration. Therefore, it is recommended that nursing education authorities implement these findings to improve nursing students’ knowledge, performance, and competency in safely administering medications.

Working with chronically ill children can overwhelm for professionals. It is necessary to study the factors related to compassion fatigue and satisfaction in order to effectively deal with it. Using a narrative review and inclusion criteria, we searched online databases for related studies from 2000 to 2023. Twelve articles were included in the final review. Understanding compassion fatigue/satisfaction will help to solve personal and professional problems and increase productivity, leading to positive outcomes for the patient, family, and the organization. This study identifies several factors that contribute to compassion fatigue (CF) in pediatric healthcare providers. These factors include workload, patient connections, lack of support, exposure to trauma, personal trauma, job dissatisfaction, and neglecting self-care. It is crucial to address these factors through targeted interventions and organizational support. Implementing evidence-based interventions shows promise in reducing the impact of CF, fostering a resilient healthcare workforce, and improving patient care.

Abstract Background A error in intravenous injection in pediatric wards can cause irreparable injuries. This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge and performance of nurses in terms of preparation and injection of intravenous drugs in pediatric wards of hospitals affiliated to Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 on 156 nurses working in pediatric wards. The data was collected with demographic information questionnaire and the knowledge and performance of the participants were determined using a researcher-made questionnaire, including the five rights of medication administration (preparation and injection, medication error, drug side effects, family empowerment, and documentation) using self-reporting and observation methods. Formal and content validity was calculated using the opinions of 10 experts and Cronbach's alpha with 40 samples. Results The mean and standard deviation of total nurses' knowledge and performance scores were 58.31 + 10.1 and 66.1 + 14.4, respectively. Moreover, the mean and standard deviation of nurses' knowledge scores were 63.55 + 14.3 for documentation, 46.1 + 7.9 for preparation and injection, 73.9 + 12.3 for drug side effects, 58.4 + 10.2 for medication error, and 69.4 + 9.4 for family empowerment. Besides, the mean performance was 69.1 + 17.6 for documentation, 61.3 ± 9.9 for preparation and injection, 78.21 + 12 for drug side effects, 58.6 + 15 for medication error, and 65.4 + 17.7 for family empowerment. Conclusion The results showed that the mean knowledge and pharmacological performance of nurses working in pediatric wards in different areas of the principles of medicine were not at the desired level, and this can affect children adversely.

Background: Surgical anxiety and pain are common complaints of hospitalized children, which can have devastating effects on the child's recovery process.Aim: The present study was performed aimed to investigate the effect of one session of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) on anxiety and pain of hospitalized children after appendectomy.Method: This clinical trial study was performed on 46 children hospitalized in the hospital affiliated to Isfahan University of Medical Sciences from December 2019 to February 2020. The subjects aged 12 to 16 years who underwent appendectomy and were randomly placed in two groups. The trait anxiety and demographic characteristics were assessed before the surgery. Six hours after the surgery, the intervention group received one session of EMDR along with the routine treatment, and the control group only received the routine treatment. Introduction: One of the important outcomes of hospitalization in infants with respiratory disease is sleep disturbance. This study was performed to investigate the role and participation of fathers in the sleep of hospitalized pediatrics with pneumonia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods: In this clinical trial study, the parents of 40 children aged from 12 to 36 months hospitalized with a diagnosis of pneumonia were randomly assigned to the control and intervention groups. After implementing a supportive training program for the fathers in the intervention group, each father made an online video communication with the infant and the mother as the primary caregiver. Mothers completed the brief infant sleep questionnaire-revised at the beginning and a week later. Results: Data analysis showed that daytime sleep duration, setting time and total 24-hour sleep time in the intervention group improved compared to the control group. In addition, parents’ behavior toward their child’s sleep improved in the intervention group compared to the control group, but parents’ perceptions of their child’s sleep in the intervention group did not show a significant difference compared to the control group. The mean total score of the intervention group also improved compared to the control group. Conclusion: Planning to maintain family unity by educating and supporting fathers during the child’s illness and their paternal support during the COVID-19 pandemic can improve the sleep of the hospitalized child due to pneumonia.

Poor oral nutrition is one of the important outcomes of hospitalization in children with respiratory disease, which may lead to insufficient energy intake. Deterioration of nutritional status during hospitalization affects clinical outcomes seriously. This study aimed to investigate the effect of an educational-supportive program for fathers on the eating behavior of hospitalized pediatrics with pneumonia in the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In this clinical trial, 40 children aged 12 to 36 months with pneumonia were selected together with their parents, after which they were randomly assigned to control and intervention groups. The intervention group received an educational supportive program face-to-face and virtually. Then, the father established an online video communication with the child and his mother as the main caregiver, while the control group received routine care. The data collection tools included the demographic questionnaire and the children's eating behavior questionnaire (CEBQ) completed by the mother during admission and 7 days later. Results: The results of the study showed no significant differences between any of the demographic variables of the study (P > 0.05). The mean eating behavior of the two groups before the intervention was 104.25 ± 6.20 and 105 ± 6.20, which were not significantly different (P = 0.70). Objectives: One of the major duties of nurses is proper medication administration while maintaining patient safety, which requires sufficient knowledge and practice. Any gaps in knowledge used by nurses can lead to irreversible injury or death of the patient. This study is aimed to determine and compare the pharmacology knowledge and performance of nurses and nursing students in using the information resources in pediatrics wards. Method: This descriptive observational study was performed on 300 nurses and nursing students. Sources of knowledge and performance of nurses and nursing students were analyzed with researcher-made tools to determine their pharmaceutical knowledge, sources of knowledge, and attitudes by independent t-test, chi-square, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson, and Spearman tests. Result: Three hundred questionnaires were examined. The clinical experience of nurses and students was their most important source of information in drug challenges for 33.7% of the participants. About 24.6% of nurses obtained the required information from specialized books on pediatric medicine. About 17.1% of the participants attained their knowledge from multiple sources (e.g. various available sources such as the Internet, pharmacy books, software, and their experiences and colleagues), while electronic sources and the Internet were the sources of knowledge for 15.5% and 7.7% of the nurses, respectively. Objective: Stress and anxiety in the mother as one of the most important members of the child's health can delay recovery and prolong hospitalization of the child. However, families feel very anxious or stressed because of the limitations imposed by COVID-19; therefore, it is important for physicians and nurses who work with children and families to recognize and reduce family stress. This study aimed to investigate the effect of implementing an educational-supportive program on improving family-centered care with bedside telehealth. Method: In this clinical trial, 40 parents with hospitalized children were selected and randomly assigned to control and intervention groups. The intervention group received a supportive training program, including teaching parental roles and supportive methods for the child and mother during the illness, while nurse counseling and support role was performed virtually as part of the intervention. After the virtual and visual implementation of the training, the father established online video communication with the child and the mother as the primary caregiver. Data collection tools were a demographic questionnaire and Stress Response Inventory (SRI) completed by the mother before and after seven days of intervention. The control group received routine care. Results: After the intervention, mothers in the intervention group showed significantly lower levels of stress than before the intervention (P < 0.05). Stress level of mothers in the control group did not demonstrate significant difference before and after the intervention (P > 0.05). Also, a comparison of mothers' stress scores post-intervention showed significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Planning and maintaining family integrity during the COVID-19 pandemic along with educating and supporting fathers through the supportive role of spouses can reduce stress of mothers with hospitalized children.

Introduction: Newborns’ incapability to self-regulate their body temperature exposes them torisk of many complications. Therefore, proper initiations of nursing interventions are crucial for ensuring early stabilization after birth. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of a multi-method training program on knowledge and practices in neonatal nurses. Methods: This quasi-experimental research was carried out with a pre-test–post-test and intervention-control groups design. The population consisted of 60 nurses working in the neonatal and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of two hospitals in Iran. The samples were selected using the convenience sampling technique. A researcher-made questionnaire was used. The validation and reliability of the questionnaire were confirmed. The nurses received a multi-method training for two weeks. They were evaluated three months later. Results: The mean knowledge score obtained in the pre-test was 30.33 ± 2.01, and it was47.73 ± 6.82 three months after the intervention. There was a statistically significant difference in the trend of changes in the scores of the two groups (F = 125.72, P < 0.001). The mean performance score in intervention group before the intervention was 60.63 ± 5.69 and after the intervention was 81.77 ± 6.37, indicating a significant difference in the trend of changes(F = 90.285, P < 0.001).The correlation between knowledge and practice was significant at the 0.01 level (r = 0.544,P = 0.002). The previous in-service training, individuals’ education, and thermoregulation knowledge were determined as predictors of performance (r = 0.651, P = 0.013). Conclusion: According to the results, a multi-method training program improves the nurses’ knowledge and performance in the infants’ body temperature regulation care.

Background and Aim: Nurses’ main tasks include the provision of healthcare services at the highest levels of quality and quantity standards, and based on the findings of scientific research. The aim of the present study is to identify and determine the barriers of evidence-based practice among nurses of Qazvin hospitals, in Iran, at 2013. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional research was a descriptive- analytic study conducted among 260 nurses practicing in six hospitals of Qazvin in 2013. The barriers scale questionnaire developed by Funk, et al. was used to examine the four dimensions of evidence-based practice (EBP) barriers including adopter, organization, innovation and communication characteristics. To analyze the data, descriptive and analytic statistics were used. Results: The mean score of EBP barriers among subjects was 3.07 out of 4. Among the barriers, "organization" and "adopter" dimensions had the highest and lowest mean scores, respectively. There was no significant statistical relationship between gender and EBP performance, But a significant relationship was observed between organizational dimension with age, employment type and work experience. Conclusion: Since “organization” was found to be the main barrier to the use of research in nursing performance, policy-makers and administrators should pay attention to the use of research in performance, the establishment of a research culture in organization, the creation of appropriate infrastructures, and the allocation of sufficient time to the nursing personnel to have access to evidences.
