Crystal fouling, which refers to the accumulation of precipitates on surfaces and the associated damage, is a common problem in many industrial processes. In deepwater oil and gas transportation, hydrate blockage poses as a considerable barrier. Consequently, modifying hydrophobicity of surfaces has become an increasingly focused strategy to mitigate hydrate. However, the design of surfaces that effectively control the hydrate remains challenging. Herein, we report a superior smooth anti-hydrate material based on silanized modification. The low-adhesion silanized silicon wafer (SSW) realizes a win-win strategy of hard formation and easy removal. Through a comprehensive study combining experimental validation with theoretical analysis, the unique characteristics of SSW in the field of anti-hydrate surfaces were deeply discussed. Various hydrate crystals exhibited a completely different hydrate growth mode at the SSW surface, in which hydrate crystals spontaneously elevated and lifted themselves off from the surface. The presence of the fluorine element on the SSW surface allowed self-lifting growth of hydrate crystals after they covered the water droplet. And the loose and porous crystal structure in this self-lifting growth could reduce the contact area between the hydrate crystals and the substrate, allowing the crystals with minimal adhesion force and removal disturbance. Furthermore, the gas enrichment on the SSW surface also reduced the contact with the substrate, thereby decreasing the adhesion and allowing self-cleaning behavior. These results indicate that the silanized surface is a promising candidate for developing anti-hydrate materials for hydrocarbon production and transportation industry.

Theta burst stimulation (TBS) is a form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with unknown underlying mechanisms and highly variable responses across subjects. To investigate these issues, we developed a simple computational model. Our model consisted of two neurons linked by an excitatory synapse that incorporates two mechanisms: short-term plasticity (STP) and spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). We applied a variable-amplitude current through I-clamp with a TBS time pattern to the pre- and post-synaptic neurons, simulating synaptic plasticity. We analyzed the results and provided an explanation for the effects of TBS, as well as the variability of responses to it. Our findings suggest that the interplay of STP and STDP mechanisms determines the direction of plasticity, which selectively affects synapses in extended neurons and underlies functional effects. Our model describes how the timing, number, and intensity of pulses delivered to neurons during rTMS contribute to induced plasticity. This not only successfully explains the different effects of intermittent TBS (iTBS) and continuous TBS (cTBS), but also predicts the results of other protocols such as 10 Hz rTMS. We propose that the variability in responses to TBS can be attributed to the variable span of neuronal thresholds across individuals and sessions. Our model suggests a biologically plausible mechanism for the diverse responses to TBS protocols and aligns with experimental data on iTBS and cTBS outcomes. Normal cells depend on autophagy to maintain cellular homeostasis by recycling damaged organelles and misfolded proteins and degrading toxic agents. Similar to apoptosis, targeting autophagy has been under attention in cancer therapy. However, autophagy has both pro-survival and pro-death functions in tumors, and its targeting requires further elucidation. The current review focuses on using nanoparticles for targeting autophagy in cancer treatment. Nanocarriers can deliver autophagy regulators along with chemotherapeutic agents leading to intracellular accumulation in cancer cells and synergistic cancer therapy. Furthermore, genetic tools such as siRNA and shRNA can be used for targeting molecular components that regulate autophagy, such as the ATG12-ATG5-ATG16L1 complex. A number of nanostructures, such as gold and zinc oxide nanoparticles, can be used to enhance oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis and autophagy, reducing cancer progression. Further, using nanoparticles to modulate autophagy potentiates the anti-tumor effects of cisplatin and gefitinib during chemotherapy. Polymeric nanoparticles, lipid-based nanostructures and carbon-based nanomaterials are among other nanoparticles capable of regulating autophagy in cancer cells. Of note, various regulatory components of autophagy such as ATGs, Beclin-1 and LC3-II can be affected by nanomaterials. P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is a drug efflux transporter that triggers doxorubicin (DOX) resistance. In this review, we highlight the molecular avenues regulating P-gp, such as Nrf2, HIF-1α, miRNAs, and long noncoding (lnc)RNAs, to reveal their participation in DOX resistance. These antitumor compounds and genetic tools synergistically reduce P-gp expression. Furthermore, ATP depletion impairs P-gp activity to enhance the antitumor activity of DOX. Nanoarchitectures, including liposomes, micelles, polymeric nanoparticles (NPs), and solid lipid nanocarriers, have been developed for the co-delivery of DOX with anticancer compounds and genes enhancing DOX cytotoxicity. Surface modification of nanocarriers, for instance with hyaluronic acid (HA), can promote selectivity toward cancer cells. As a phenolic acid compound, caffeic acid (CA) can be isolated from different sources such as tea, wine and coffee. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is naturally occurring derivative of CA isolated from propolis. This medicinal plant is well-known due to its significant therapeutic impact including its effectiveness as hepatoprotective, neuroprotective and anti-diabetic agent. Among them, anti-tumor activity of CA has attracted much attention, and this potential has been confirmed both in vitro and in vivo. CA can induce apoptosis in cancer cells via enhancing ROS levels and impairing mitochondrial function. Molecular pathways such as PI3K/Akt and AMPK with role in cancer progression, are affected by CA and its derivatives in cancer therapy. CA is advantageous in reducing aggressive behavior of tumors via suppressing metastasis by inhibiting epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition mechanism. Noteworthy, CA and CAPE can promote response of cancer cells to chemotherapy, and sensitize them to chemotherapy-mediated cell death. In order to improve capacity of CA and CAPE in cancer suppression, it has been co-administered with other anti-tumor compounds such as gallic acid and p-coumaric acid. Due to its poor bioavailability, nanocarriers have been developed for enhancing its ability in cancer suppression. Lung cancer (LC) is a leading cause of death worldwide with high mortality and morbidity. A wide variety of risk factors are considered for LC development such as smoking, air pollution and family history. It appears that genetic and epigenetic factors are also potential players in LC development and progression. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a signaling pathway with vital function in inducing energy balance and homeostasis. An increase in AMP:ATP and ADP:ATP ratio leads to activation of AMPK signaling by upstream mediators such as LKB1 and CamKK. Dysregulation of AMPK signaling is a common finding in different cancers, particularly LC. AMPK activation can significantly enhance LC metastasis via EMT induction. Upstream mediators such as PLAG1, IMPAD1, and TUFM can regulate AMPK-mediated metastasis. AMPK activation can promote proliferation and survival of LC cells via glycolysis induction. In suppressing LC progression, anti-tumor compounds including metformin, ginsenosides, casticin and duloxetine dually induce/inhibit AMPK signaling. This is due to double-edged sword role of AMPK signaling in LC cells. Gene therapy is an emerging and promising strategy in cancer therapy where small interfering RNA (siRNA) system has been deployed for down-regulation of targeted gene and subsequent inhibition in cancer progression; some issues with siRNA, however, linger namely, its off-targeting property and degradation by enzymes. Nanoparticles can be applied for the encapsulation of siRNA thus enhancing its efficacy in gene silencing where chitosan (CS), a linear alkaline polysaccharide derived from chitin, with superb properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, stability and solubility, can play a vital role. Herein, the potential of CS nanoparticles has been discussed for the delivery of siRNA in cancer therapy; proliferation, metastasis and chemoresistance are suppressed by siRNA-loaded CS nanoparticles, especially the usage of pH-sensitive CS nanoparticles. CS nanoparticles can provide a platform for the co-delivery of siRNA and anti-tumor agents with their enhanced stability via chemical modifications. As pre-clinical experiments are in agreement with potential of CS-based nanoparticles for siRNA delivery, and these carriers possess biocompatibiliy and are safe, further studies can focus on evaluating their utilization in cancer patients., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Uncontrolled growth and metastasis of cancer cells is an increasing challenge for overcoming cancer, and improving survival of patients. Complicated signaling networks account for proliferation and invasion of cancer cells that need to be elucidated for providing effective cancer therapy, and minimizing their malignancy. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are RNA molecules with a length of more than 200 nucleotides. They participate in cellular events, and their dysregulation in a common phenomenon in different cancers. Noteworthy, lncRNAs can regulate different molecular pathways, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is one of them. STAT3 is a tumor-promoting factors in cancers due to its role in cancer proliferation (cell cycle progression and apoptosis inhibition) and metastasis (EMT induction). LncRNAs can function as upstream mediators of STAT3 pathway, reducing/enhancing its expression. This dual relationship is of importance in affecting proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells. The response of cancer cells to therapy such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy is regulated by lncRNA/STAT3 axis. Tumor-promoting lncRNAs including NEAT1, SNHG3 and H19 induces STAT3 expression, while tumor-suppressing lncRNAs such as MEG3, PTCSC3 and NKILA down-regulate STAT3 expression. Noteworthy, upstream mediators of STAT3 such as microRNAs can be regulated by lncRNAs. Doxorubicin (DOX) is extensively applied in cancer therapy due to its efficacy in suppressing cancer progression and inducing apoptosis. After its discovery, this chemotherapeutic agent has been frequently used for cancer therapy, leading to chemoresistance. Due to dose-dependent toxicity, high concentrations of DOX cannot be administered to cancer patients. Therefore, experiments have been directed towards revealing underlying mechanisms responsible for DOX resistance and ameliorating its adverse effects. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling is activated to increase levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells to protect them against oxidative stress. It has been reported that Nrf2 activation is associated with drug resistance. In cells exposed to DOX, stimulation of Nrf2 signaling protects cells against cell death. Various upstream mediators regulate Nrf2 in DOX resistance. Strategies, both pharmacological and genetic interventions, have been applied for reversing DOX resistance. However, Nrf2 induction is of importance for alleviating side effects of DOX. Pharmacological agents with naturally occurring compounds as the most common have been used for inducing Nrf2 signaling in DOX amelioration. Furthermore, signaling networks in which Nrf2 is a key player for protection against DOX adverse effects have been revealed and are discussed in the current review.

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Breast cancer cells demonstrate uncontrolled proliferation and high metastatic capacity. They can obtain resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This has resulted in troublesome treatment of breast cancer. Nature as a rich source of plant derived-natural products with anti-tumor activity can be of interest in breast cancer therapy. Ginsenosides are triterpenoid saponins and considered as secondary metabolites exclusively found in Panax species. From immemorial times, ginsenosides have been applied in the treatment of various disorders such as diabetes, inflammatory diseases, neurological disorders, and particularly, cancer. In the present review, we highlight the anti-tumor activity of ginsenosides against breast cancer cells. Ginsenosides are able to induce apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. They interfere with breast cancer metastasis via inhibiting epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, matrix metalloproteinase proteins and angiogenesis. Ginsenosides can promote the efficacy of chemotherapy via suppressing migration and proliferation. Molecular pathways such as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt), insulin-like growth factor-1, Wnt, microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs are affected by ginsenosides in suppressing breast cancer malignancy. The majority of aluminum phosphide (ALP) toxicity cases are suicidal attempts. Despite advances in critical care medicine, the mortality rate of ALP remains very high. Unfortunately, knowledge on the toxicokinetics of ALP is very low. An obsolete idea was proposed that inhibition of complex IV of cytochrome C oxidase is responsible for multiorgan dysfunction. However, based on human studies, this effect might be insignificant. Thus, a novel idea proposes that the main mechanism might be vascular wall integrity disruption. The low frequency of acute toxicity and unanswered questions about the toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics has led to leaden advances of novel treatments. The aim of this review was to evaluate problems regarding current treatment protocols and propose new ideas based on updated information. For this purpose, we reviewed all available articles on the management of ALP poisoning published to date. Considering failure of conventional therapies on maintaining systolic blood pressure, correcting acid-base disturbances, and support cardiac function, the previous treatment protocols have been overruled. However, repudiate of conventional treatments in this deadly condition is not without penalties for the health-care provider. The introduction of new therapies including refuse of gastric lavage with water-soluble compounds, administration of a high molecular weight colloidal solution for fluid resuscitation and termination using sodium bicarbonate, and vasoactive agents has been prospected to improve patient survival. This protocol is in early clinical evaluation; nevertheless, it appears to improve patient's survival; hence, future randomized trials should be performed to support their effectiveness., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

An innovative thermally reduced graphene (TRG) modified silica-supported 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (SiO2-APTES) composite was synthesized and characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy SEM techniques. The adsorbent was then used in the solid phase extraction (SPE) of Cr (VI) as the Cr (VI)-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) complex with the subsequent measurement by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The adsorbent surface was activated by adding sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to the sample solution. The effect of the main experimental parameters such as type and volume of the extraction solvent, pH, dosage of DPC, SDS, the adsorbent, time of the extraction, and salt concentration on the extraction efficiency were investigated and optimized. A linear dynamic range of 1.3-40 ng mL(-1) with a satisfactory determination coefficient (R(2)) of 0.9930 was obtained. A detection limit of 0.4 ng mL(-1) Cr (VI) was attained when a sample volume of 25 mL was used. Intraday and inter-day precisions were obtained equal to 2.3% and 7.9%, respectively. The enrichment factor (EF) was calculated to be equal to 167. The technique was applied successfully to the determination of Cr (VI) at trace levels in tap, river, sewage and ground water samples and the relative recoveries of the added chromium were in the range of 92.6-109.9%., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Zircon contains small amounts of uranium, thorium and radium in its crystalline structure. The ceramic industry is one of the major consumers of zirconium compounds that are used as an ingredient at ∼10-20 % by weight in glaze. In this study, seven different ceramic factories have been investigated regarding the presence of radioactive elements with focus on natural radioactivity. The overall objective of this investigation is to provide information regarding the radiation exposure to workers in the ceramic industry due to naturally occurring radioactive materials. This objective is met by collecting existing radiological data specific to glaze production and generating new data from sampling activities. The sampling effort involves the whole process of glaze production. External exposures are monitored using a portable gamma-ray spectrometer and environmental thermoluminescence dosimeters, by placing them for 6 months in some workplaces. Internal routes of exposure (mainly inhalation) are studied using air sampling, and gross alpha and beta counting. Measurement of radon gas and its progeny is performed by continuous radon gas monitors that use pulse ionisation chambers. Natural radioactivity due to the presence of ²³⁸U, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K in zirconium compounds, glazes and other samples is measured by a gamma-ray spectrometry system with a high-purity germanium detector. The average concentrations of ²³⁸U and ²³²Th observed in the zirconium compounds are >3300 and >550 Bq kg⁻¹, respectively. The specific activities of other samples are much lower than in zirconium compounds. The annual effective dose from external radiation had a mean value of ∼0.13 mSv y⁻¹. Dust sampling revealed the greatest values in the process at the powdering site and hand weighing places. In these plants, the annual average effective dose from inhalation of long-lived airborne radionuclides was 0.226 mSv. ²²²Rn gas concentrations in the glaze production plant and storage warehouse were found to range from 10 to 213 Bq m⁻³. In this study, the estimated annual effective doses to exposed workers were <1 mSv y⁻¹.
