2. Th Generation of Typical Meteorological Year for Tripoli, Libya

Abstract

In this paper a Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) of Tripoli city, the capital of Libya was presented and analyzed using twelve year of measured weather data, this data includes global solar radiation, air temperature and wind speed. Th measurements were taken every ten minutes. Finkelstein–Schafer statistical method was applied to analyze the data and obtain the TMY for the site. Typical Meteorological Months (TMMs) were selected by choosing the one with the least deviation from the long-term cumulative distribution function. A close-fi agreement is observed between the generated TMY and the long-term averages. Thus TMY generated will be very useful tool for optimal design and performance evaluation of solar energy conversion systems, heating, wind, and other renewable energy systems to be located in this part of Libya.

Soma Farag Medical Department at Imperial College, London University, London, UK I read with interest the study by Khan and Arsanious1 which gave insight into the perception of the severity of medical errors of practitioners of different grades and believed that there is much to be gained from it. Medical error in the duration of one’s career is inevitable. The General Medical Council (GMC) advocates a Duty of Candor,2 which means to be open and honest when medical errors occur. In order to successfully explain what went wrong to patients and their relatives or seniors, one should first acknowledge that one has made the error and have an accurate perception of how severe this was. 4. Individual and competitive adsorption of phenol and nickel onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Abstract

Individual and competitive adsorption studies were carried out to investigate the removal of phenol and nickel ions by adsorption onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The carbon nanotubes were characterized by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. The different experimental conditions affecting the adsorption process were investigated. Kinetics and equilibrium models were tested for fitting the adsorption experimental data. The characterization experimental results proved that the studied adsorbent possess different surface functional groups as well as typical morphological features. The batch experiments revealed that 300 min of contact time was enough to achieve equilibrium for the adsorption of both phenol and nickel at an initial adsorbate concentration of 25 mg/l, an adsorbent dosage of 5 g/l, and a solution pH of 7. The adsorption of phenol and nickel by MWCNTs followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model and the intraparticle diffusion model was quite good in describing the adsorption mechanism. The Langmuir equilibrium model fitted well the experimental data indicating the homogeneity of the adsorbent surface sites. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacities were found to be 32.23 and 6.09 mg/g, for phenol and Ni ions, respectively. The removal efficiency of MWCNTs for nickel ions or phenol in real wastewater samples at the optimum conditions reached up to 60% and 70%, respectively.

Abstract

Soma Farag Medical Department at Imperial College London University, South Kensington, London, UKThe cross-sectional descriptive study on color vision deficiency (CVD) among biomedical students carried out by Dohvoma et al1 is an interesting read. CVD is not tested in medical students in the UK, though it is routinely tested among those in India upon admission,2 as it is believed that misinterpretation of colored signs can lead to misdiagnosis. In the aforementioned study, 1.3% of the biomedical students were positively tested to be “color blind” through Ishihara’s plate test and Roth’s 28 hue test.1 The Farnsworth–Munsell 100 hue test also exists to diagnose CVD, though this is more time-consuming and expensive to carry out than Roth’s 28 hue test.3View the original paper by Dohvoma and colleagues.

16. Zingiber officinalepowder as a biosorbent for adsorption of acid violet 90 from aqueous solutions

Abstract

The potential of Zingiber officinalepowder was explored as a biosorbent for the uptake of Acid Violet 90 dye from the aqueous solutions. The biosorbent was characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and Zeta potential techniques. The impact of various experimental parameters such as pH, dye concentration, adsorbent dose, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption capacity of biosorbent was investigated using batch adsorption. The Zingiber officinalepowder showed a dye adsorption efficiency of 342.68 mg/g. The optimum adsorption was achieved at pH 2, adsorbent dose of 0.2 g/L, contact time of 10 min, and 40 mg/L dye concentration at a temperature of 30 °C. The experimental isotherm data was analyzed by two-parameter and three-parameter models and best explained by the Freundlich model. The pseudo-second-order model elucidated the kinetic behavior of the uptake with pore-diffusion as the rate-determining step. The thermodynamic study suggested the uptake of dye was feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature. The results revealed that the Zingiber officinalepowder has the potential to be used as an adsorbent for the treatment of water.

Abstract

PURPOSEAllogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) improves outcomes for patients with AML harboring an internal tandem duplication mutation of FLT3 (FLT3-ITD) AML. These patients are routinely treated with a FLT3 inhibitor after HCT, but there is limited evidence to support this. Accordingly, we conducted a randomized trial of post-HCT maintenance with the FLT3 inhibitor gilteritinib (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02997202) to determine if all such patients benefit or if detection of measurable residual disease (MRD) could identify those who might benefit.METHODSAdults with FLT3-ITD AML in first remission underwent HCT and were randomly assigned to placebo or 120 mg once daily gilteritinib for 24 months after HCT. The primary end point was relapse-free survival (RFS). Secondary end points included overall survival (OS) and the effect of MRD pre- and post-HCT on RFS and OS.RESULTSThree hundred fifty-six participants were randomly assigned post-HCT to receive gilteritinib or placebo. Although RFS was higher in the gilteritinib arm, the difference was not statistically significant (hazard ratio [HR], 0.679 [95% CI, 0.459 to 1.005]; two-sided P =.0518). However, 50.5% of participants had MRD detectable pre- or post-HCT, and, in a prespecified subgroup analysis, gilteritinib was beneficial in this population (HR, 0.515 [95% CI, 0.316 to 0.838]; P =.0065). Those without detectable MRD showed no benefit (HR, 1.213 [95% CI, 0.616 to 2.387]; P =.575).CONCLUSIONAlthough the overall improvement in RFS was not statistically significant, RFS was higher for participants with detectable FLT3-ITD MRD pre- or post-HCT who received gilteritinib treatment. To our knowledge, these data are among the first to support the effectiveness of MRD-based post-HCT therapy.

Abstract

Libya laid a claim to the Gulf of Sirte, based on historical and vital interests in 1973. The claim stated that the Gulf of Sirte was a part of Libya's internal waters over which Libya exercises full control and that the Gulf of Sirte was a historical and vital bay. The purpose of this study is to discuss and analyse the Libyan claim over the Gulf of Sirte as a historical and vital bay and determine whether this claim is supported by international law.

Abstract

CSG collapse, or pipe deformation against salt formations in South Gharib and Belayim formations considered one of most known problems in GUPCO at 1970's. CSG design change over time using higher collapse rating, increase wall thickness and using of double concentric cemented casing against salts. This Paper will describe a practical methodology to estimate casing deformation problems due to salt loading. This approach allows changing field-casing design that was standardized in Gulf of Suez fields for more than 30 years from a double-cemented concentric casing string against salt bodies to a single casing standing alone. This approach greatly impacts total well cost, enhances well productivity, and provides room for future sidetrack opportunities. The methodology is based on calculating the casing deformation and comparing it to the clearance between the casing inside diameter and drift. An equation that calculates the magnitude of change in casing inside diameter due to salt loading will be developed based on previous literature and correlated to match the actual casing deformation incidents that happened in different fields and in different casing specs in the Gulf of Suez. Then the new modified equation and software model will be used to extrapolate the performance of a single heavy wall casing to stand alone against the salt section. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
