Helicobacter pyloriis responsible for causing various gastroduodenal diseases, with a worldwide prevalence of 50% and a prevalence in Chile of 73-76%. It is necessary to search for more efficient treatment methods for its eradication. In this study, araucana hens were inoculated intramuscularly withH. pyloriwhole lysates from differentH. pylorivirulence genotype: strain ATCC 43504(cagA+, vacAs1m1, dupA-),and strain J99 (ATCC 70824) (cagA+,vacAs1m1, dupA+),associated with the development of gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer, respectively. Egg yolk immunoglobulins (IgY) were isolated, mainly through ultrafiltration and ammonium sulfate precipitation at 40%. IgY againstH. pylori,strains J99 and 43504, were purified by thiophilic adsorption chromatography (TAC), obtaining the fractions eluted-peak II and eluted-peak III. The protein concentration for these immunoglobulins ranges between 0.3 and 5.4 mg/mL. The results of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Western blot (WB) allowed to observe a band of 67 kDa (IgY heavy chain) of immunoglobulins in both strains. By means of indirect immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA), IgY titers againstH. pyloristrains J99 and 43504 were greater than 1/6,400. In cross-reactivity tests among antibodies from several bacteria, there were significant differences. In the prophylactic and therapeuticin vitroassays using a gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (AGS), the fraction of the eluted-peak III of IgY challenged withH. pyloridemonstrated a high protective efficiency against both strains ofH. pylori. &nbsp, Helicobacter pylories el agente causal de diversas patologías gastroduodenales, con una prevalencia a nivel mundial de 50% y en Chile de 73-76%, haciendo necesario tratamientos más eficientes para su erradicación. Este estudio contempló la inoculación intramuscular de gallinas araucanas con lisados completos de dos cepas deH. pyloricon diferente genotipo de virulencia: cepa ATCC 43504(cagA+, vacAs1m1, dupA-)y cepa J99 (ATCC 70824) (cagA+,vacAs1m1, dupA+),respectivamente asociadas a desarrollo de cáncer gástrico y úlcera duodenal. Se realizó el aislamiento de IgY desde la yema de los huevos recolectados, basado principalmente en ultrafiltración y precipitación con sulfato de amonio al 40%. Mediante cromatografía de adsorción tiofílica (TAC) se purificaron las IgY anti-H. pyloride las cepas J99 y 43504, obteniendo así las fracciones eluida-pico II y eluida-pico III. El rango de concentración proteica de estas inmunoglobulinas fue de 0,3 a 5,4 mg/mL. Mediante electroforesis en geles de poliacrilamida en ambiente reductor (SDS-PAGE) y western blot (WB) se observó una banda de 67 KDa (cadena pesada de IgY) de las inmunoglobulinas de ambas cepas. El título de anticuerpos, mediante ELISA indirecto (ELISA-I), para IgY anti-H. pyloride las cepas J99 y 43504 fue mayor a 1/6.400. En la prueba de reacción cruzada entre los anticuerpos aviares con diversas bacterias hubo diferencias significativas. En los ensayos profilácticos y terapéuticosin vitroutilizando una línea celular de adenocarcinoma gástrico (AGS), la fracción eluida-pico III de IgY desafiada conH. pyloridemostró una alta eficiencia protectora contra ambas cepas deH. pylori. &nbsp

Background: Up to 70% of hospitalized older people experience a deterioration of their functional capacity during the course of hospital stay. This change has a dismal effect of quality oflife and prognosis. Aim: To assess the change in functional status of older people during the course of hospitalization in a geriatric unit. Material and Methods: Review of medical records of83 patients with a mean age of79years (70% women), hospitalized in an acute geriatric unit of a clinical hospital, between 2007 and 2009. Functional capacity was assessed using Barthel and Lawthon scales in a basal period, on admission and on discharge. Results: Mean hospital stay was nine days. Median scores of Barthel scale on the basal period, on admission and on discharge were 90, 50 and 80, respectively. The figures for Lawthon scale were 4,2 and 3 respectively. Seventy eight percent of patients lost functional capacity during hospital stay and 72% recovered their functional status on discharge. Conclusions: A great proportion of older people experience a loss of functional capacity during hospitalization. This deterioration can be reverted with an adequate geriatric management.

This study conducted a cost analysis of different interventions in the early diagnosis of hydatidosis between the years 2006 -2007 in the Province of Nuble, Bio-Bio Region of Chile. The aim was to estimate the costs of early diagnosis of this condition. We included all children of 5 and 12 years old in rural areas of the province. Data collection activities were identified which included specific antibody measurements (indirect ELISA) and an abdominal ultrasound. For the determination of costs, direct and indirect costs were identified using the methodology of activity-based costs. The results demonstrate that the preventive diagnosis costs S17.183 Chilean pesos per child (S35 US dollars), thus making this intervention of lower cost than waiting until the person becomes ill with this disease.

Se analizan los principales indicadores biológicos-pesqueros de las especies objetivos que sostuvieron la actividad extractiva de la zona norte en el 2005, comparándose con la serie histórica reciente. Se entregan los resultados operacionales de la actividad de la flota, centrando el análisis en la captura, esfuerzo, rendimiento y en los indicadores biológicos más relevantes, como son la composición de talla-edad y los índices reproductivos y de reclutamiento. It discusses the main biological indicators-fishing of target species that supported the extraction of the northern in 2005 and compared with recent time series. This paper gives the results of operations of the activity of the fleet, focusing the analysis on the catch, effort, performance and the most important biological indicators, such as size, age composition and reproductive and recruitment rates. Background: The success of revascularization procedures for coronary artery disease could be lower in diabetic patients. Aim: To report the results of coronary angioplasty in diabetic and non diabetic patients. Patients and methods: All angioplasty procedures performed between 1996 and 1999 were recorded. Demographic data, procedure details, hospital outcome and evolution at one year of follow up were analyzed. Results: During the study period, 358 patients were treated; of these, 79 were diabetics. Despite the greater severity of coronary lesions among diabetic patients the clinical success of the procedure was 92.4% in diabetics and 91.8% in non diabetics. Hospital mortality was 1.3% in diabetics and 0.7% in non diabetics. Major complications occurred in 3.8% of diabetics and 3.2% in non diabetics. One year survival was 95.9% for diabetics and 98% in non diabetics. There were five late cardiac deaths among non diabetics and 3 among diabetics during the year of follow up. The frequency of new revascularization procedures was 4.3% in diabetics and 8.3% in non diabetics. Event-free survival was 95.6% in diabetics and 89.2% in non diabetics. Conclusions: Results of angioplasty were similar in diabetic and non diabetic patients in terms of hospital outcome and late follow-up (Rev Méd Chile 2001; 129: 861-70).

En la actualidad, los programas de mercaje son necesarios para estudios de vital importancia en la biología de poblaciones, como los patrones de migración; ya que es un hecho aceptado desde hace casi un siglo que los peces pelágicos especialmente los clupeideos presentan un ciclo migratorio anual, lo que se manifiesta en la pesquería como cambios espaciales y temporales en las zonas de pesca, con las respectivas oscilaciones en la magnitud de sus capturas. Las técnicas de marcación también permiten evaluar la extensión de la distribución geográfica de una población, los patrones de migración, el número total de individuos de una población, sus parámetros de crecimiento y estim aciones de mortalidad. Currently, programs are needed to mercaje critical studies in population biology, such as ”migration patterns” as it is an accepted fact for almost a century that pelagic fishes especially clupeideos present a migration cycle annually, which is manifested in the fishery as spatial and temporal changes in fishing areas, with the respective fluctuations in the magnitude of their catch. Marking techniques also to assess the extent of the geographical distribution of a population, migration patterns, the total number of individuals in a population, their growth parameters and mortality estimates.
