3. The Employment Portfolio

Abstract

For nearly twenty years the educational community has utilized portfolios as a method of monitoring the growth and development of candidates earning certification as educators and as school leaders. Professors in the field of education have encouraged their students to share these portfolios with public school hiring officials. There is a belief by some individuals in the field that these documents provide evidence of a candidate's skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics. This article (1) examines the use of the employment portfolio, (2) compares and contrasts the views of professors in the field of education and hiring officials, and (3) offers suggestions for new teachers and school leaders on how to construct an employment portfolio which will be recognized and applauded by prospective employers. 4. Developing a Perspective on the Global Achievement Gap: School Leaders as International Collaborators

Abstract

In recent years American schools and the scholars who study these schools have become focused on bridging the achievement gap. The scholarly literature is most often focused on the discrepancy in achievement in one school, a region, or perhaps one nation. The literature examining the best practices of schools that have bridged this gap occasionally recounts successful strategies; however, the discussion regarding the achievement gap has been nearly silent regarding international law and the obligations all governments have to remove learning inequalities. In addition, the literature rarely discusses the importance of international collaboration. This article introduces all of these topics, with the purpose of encouraging global collaboration between educational leaders and scholars to meet the challenge of providing all children an equitable education in order to close the Global Achievement Gap.

Abstract

The Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) has been viewed by many plan sponsors as a bane to the existence of defined benefit plans, but one pension fund does not think so. The Central Pension Fund (CPF) of the International Union of Operating Engineers and Participating Employers has not only survived, but more importantly, thrived under ERISA. Specifically, administrative burdens associated with the act were accommodated while costs were kept down by the CPF due to ERISA's provisions.

Abstract

A study of the effect of patients knowing the names of nurses caring for them in a United Kingdom hospital found this to be useful for public relations and personalising care, though patients did not feel this affected the quality of care they received. In certain circumstances it may be inappropriate for patients to know the names of nurses, for example, when patients are drunk. The study was carried out in an accident and emergency department in Sep 1992, and was based on 50 questionnaires, 21 of which were returned.
