Various cells within the adrenal microenvironment are important in maintaining the body homeostasis. However, our understanding of adrenal disease pathogenesis is limited by an incomplete molecular characterization of the cell types responsible for the organ's multiple homeostatic functions. We report a cellular landscape of the human adrenal gland using single-cell RNA sequencing. We reveal characteristic features of cell types within the human adrenal microenvironment and found immune activation of nonimmune cells in the adrenal endothelial cells. We also reveal that abundant immune cells occupied a lot of space in adrenal gland. Additionally, Sex-related diversity in the adrenocortical cells and different gene expression profiles between the left and right adrenal gland are also observed at single-cell resolution. Together, at single-cell resolution, the transcriptomic map presents a comprehensive view of the human adrenal gland, which serves as a fundamental baseline description of this organ and paves a way for the further studies of adrenal diseases.

Light, sound, and microwave are important tools for many interdisciplinary applications in a multi-physical environment, and they usually are inefficient to be detected simultaneously in the same physical platform. However, at the microscopic scale, these waves can unexpectedly interact with the same microstructure through resonant enhancement, making it a unique hybrid micro-system for new applications across multiple physical channels. Here we experimentally demonstrate an optomechanical microdevice based on Brillouin lasing operation in an optical microcavity as a sensitive unit to sense external light, sound, and microwave signals in the same platform. These waves can induce modulations to the microcavity Brillouin laser (MBL) in a resonance-enhanced manner through either the pressure forces including radiation pressure force or thermal absorption, allowing several novel applications such as broadband non-photovoltaic detection of light, sound-light wave mixing, and deep-subwavelength microwave imaging. These results pave the way towards on-chip integrable optomechanical solutions for sensing, free-space secure communication, and microwave imaging.

Fizeau’s experiment, inspiring Einstein’s special theory of relativity, reveals a small dragging effect acting on light inside a moving medium. Dispersion can enhance such light drag according to Lorentz’s predication. Here fast- and slow-light-enhanced light drag is demonstrated experimentally in a moving optical microcavity through stimulated Brillouin scattering induced transparency and absorption. The strong dispersion provides an enhancement factor up to ~104, greatly reducing the system size down to the micrometer range. These results may offer a unique platform for a compact, integrated solution to motion sensing and ultrafast signal processing applications. In accordance with the relativistic addition of velocities, the Fizeau experiment shows the dragging of light inside a moving medium which can be enhanced in dispersive medium. Here a strong dispersion, induced by stimulated Brillouin scattering, is shown to significantly enhance the light drag effect in a moving optical microcavity.

Extensive studies have been performed to describe the phenotypic changes occurring during malignant transformation of the prostate. However, the cell types and associated changes that contribute to the development of prostate diseases and cancer remain elusive, largely due to the heterogeneous composition of prostatic tissues. Here, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of four human prostate tissues by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to analyze their cellular compositions. We identify 18 clusters of cell types, each with distinct gene expression profiles and unique features; of these, one cluster of epithelial cells (Ep) is found to be associated with immune function. In addition, we characterize a special cluster of fibroblasts and aberrant signaling changes associated with prostate cancer (PCa). Moreover, we provide insights into the epithelial changes that occur during the cellular senescence and aging. These results expand our understanding of the unique functional associations between the diverse prostatic cell types and the contributions of specific cell clusters to the malignant transformation of prostate tissues and PCa development.

Photonic gauge potentials are crucial for manipulating charge-neutral photons like their counterpart electrons in the electromagnetic field, allowing the analogous Aharonov–Bohm effect in photonics and paving the way for critical applications such as photonic isolation. Normally, a gauge potential exhibits phase inversion along two opposite propagation paths. Here we experimentally demonstrate phonon-induced anomalous gauge potentials with noninverted gauge phases in a spatial-frequency space, where near-phase-matched nonlinear Brillouin scatterings enable such unique direction-dependent gauge phases. Based on this scheme, we construct photonic isolators in the frequency domain permitting nonreciprocal propagation of light along the frequency axis, where coherent phase control in the photonic isolator allows switching completely the directionality through an Aharonov–Bohm interferometer. Moreover, similar coherent controlled unidirectional frequency conversions are also illustrated. These results may offer a unique platform for a compact, integrated solution to implement synthetic-dimension devices for on-chip optical signal processing.

Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major cause of end-stage renal disease and proteinuria is one of the most prominent clinical manifestations. The expression of Vitamin D receptor (VDR) in patients with chronic kidney diseases was decreased, while VDR agonists could partially alleviate the proteinuria of DN in animal models. The present study was designed to determine the expression of VDR in renal tissues and its relationship with proteinuria the diabetic model db/db mice. Methods: The regulation effects of VDR on the Wnt signaling pathway were analyzed using RNA interference and VDR agonist paricalcitol. Results: With the increase in age of the db/db mice, the VDR protein and mRNA levels in renal tissues were decreased, proteinuria increased, and the protein and mRNA levels of GSK-3β of and β-catenin increased. Paricalcitol treatment resulted in the up-regulation of VDR and down-regulation of GSK-3β and β-catenin, indicating that VDR had a regulatory effect on the Wnt signaling pathway. Conclusion: VDR activation could reduce proteinuria of DN mice and alleviate high-glucose-induced injury of kidneys and podocytes by regulating the key molecules of Wnt signaling pathway.

Non-Hermitian systems based on parity-time (PT) and anti-PT symmetry reveal rich physics beyond the Hermitian regime. So far, realizations of such symmetric systems have been limited to the spatial domain. Here we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate synthetic anti-PT symmetry in a spectral dimension induced by nonlinear Brillouin scattering in a single optical microcavity, where Brillouin scattering induced transparency or absorption in two spectral resonances provides the optical gain and loss to observe a phase transition between two symmetry regimes. This scheme provides a new paradigm towards the investigation of non-Hermitian physics in a synthetic photonic dimension for all-optical signal processing and quantum information science.

We propose a scheme of terahertz (THz) indirect detection via plasmonic-antenna enhanced sum frequency generation process, where the THz wave is converted to optical wave that is detected by photodetector. The gold antenna built in the structure can improve the conversion efficiency by enhancing both the optical wave and THz wave. The numerical simulations show that the field enhancement is influenced by the geometry of the antenna, so the conversion efficiency can be improved highly by optimizing the antenna. Compared with commercial detectors, our detection system has a much lower noise equivalent power (NEP) of 15.4[Formula: see text]pW/[Formula: see text] at 5[Formula: see text]THz.

Whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities strongly enhance nonlinear optical processes like optical frequency comb (OFC), Raman scattering, and optomechanics, which nowadays enable cutting-edge applications in microwave synthesis, optical sensing spectroscopy, and integrated photonics. Yet, tunability of their resonances, mostly via coarse and complicated mechanisms through temperature, electrical, or mechanical means, still poses a major challenge for precision applications as above. Here, we introduce a passive scheme to finely tune resonances of WGMs at MHz precision with an external probe. Such a probe remotely transfers heat through a gap from an optical microcavity, effectively tuning its resonances by thermal-optic nonlinearity. Moreover, we explore this unique technique in microcavity nonlinear optics, demonstrating the generation of a tunable OFC and backward stimulated Brillouin scattering with variable beating frequencies. This technique addresses the core problem of WGM microcavity's fine-tuning, paving the way for important applications like spectroscopy and frequency synthesis.

High-quality SiNx films with controllable low stress and low optical loss are deposited at ultra-low temperature (75 °C) using inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). Two kinds of integrated photonic structures have been demonstrated that exemplify its viability as a photonic integration platform. A microcavity consists of two distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) formed by alternating a total of 49 layers of SiNx and SiO2 with a total thickness of about 11.5 μm is grown without any cracks, confirming the excellent stress control in the process. Microring resonators are also fabricated in as-deposited planar SiNx waveguide layer using electron-beam lithography (EBL) and plasma etching. Average waveguide loss of 0.79 ± 0.22 dB/cm has been achieved in the range of 1550-1600 nm for ring radii larger than 40 μm. The ultra-low temperature grown SiNx with properties of low loss and low stress is therefore a promising photonic integration platform for various photonic integration applications.
