EglA, a β-1,4-glucanase isolated from the ruminal fungus Piromyces rhizinflata, shows promise in a wide range of industrial applications because of its broad substrate specificity. In this study, EglA was immobilized on different supporting materials including poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), Si wafer, textured Si wafer, and indium tin oxide-coated (ITO-coated) glass. The binding abilities of PDMS and Si wafer toward EglA were significantly higher than those of the other supporting materials. The optimized temperature and pH conditions for EglA immobilized on PDMS and on Si wafer were further determined by a response surface methodology (RSM) combined with a central composite design (CCD). The results indicated that the optimum pH and temperature values as well as the specific β-glucanase activity of EglA on PDMS were higher than those of free-form EglA. In addition, EglA immobilized on PDMS could be reused up to six times with detectable enzyme activity, while the enzyme activity of Eg1A on Si wafer was undetectable after three cycles of enzyme reaction. The results demonstrate that PDMS is an attractive supporting material for EglA immobilization and could be developed into an enzyme chip or enzyme tube for potential industrial applications.

The enhanced transmission of higher order plasmon modes with random gold nanoparticles embedded in periodic hole arrays using asymmetric pair aperture as a unit is investigated in the midinfrared regime. Different thicknesses of gold film were deposited inside holes and then annealed to form randomly sized and distributed nanoparticles. The holes deposited with thin gold film exhibit significantly enhanced transmission in higher order modes after thermal annealing. The enormous local electric field around the nanoparticles enhances the scattering effect that contributes to the enhanced infrared transmission. This unique design, which integrates localized and propagating surface plasmons, provides an easy way for midinfrared applications in need of enhanced transmission in higher order modes.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) which were directly synthesized on carbon cloth were modified by a microwave digestion method in 5 M HNO3 for supporting Pt nanoparticles. The characterizations of modified CNTs were carried out by TEM, XPS, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The HRTEM image shows the caps of MWCNTs are opened after modifying by microwave digestion method. The open-end and undamaged MWCNTs can provide a larger surface area for supporting more catalysts. Furthermore, the methanol electrocatalytic oxidation of microwave digestion treated Pt/MWCNTs electrode shows higher current density than pristine and nitric acid-treated MWCNTs from cyclic voltammograms. Wavy structures are often observed on the surface of a rubber material (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) covered with a thin metallic film. In this study we demonstrate that the orientation, periodicity, location of formation, and range of periodicity of the wavy structures can be regulated by three leading factors including the surface pattern, substrate hardness and the thickness of the metallic film. Results show the orientation of the wavy structures can be adjusted by the location, shape and size of the surface patterns. Enhancement of the substrate hardness can prevent forming random wavy structures. The thickness of surface metallic film significantly influenced the periodicity of the structures. Experimental results revealed an increase of the thickness of surface Au film by 50 nm, the periodicity was increased roughly by 1 mm. A compound structure, combining longitudinally preset patterns and transversely induced wavy structures, and a parallel wavy structure fabricated, respectively, by suitablearrangement ofpatternconfigurationsandadjustmentofsubstrate hardnessweredemonstrated. This paper reports the fabrication method of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) microlens array based on the replica molding process, casting a liquid PDMS into concave microlens molds. Concave microlens molds were fabricated through spin-coating processes suspended a liquid PMMA film on the micro-drilled hole, leading to the formation of the special curvature. Then, PDMS microlens arrays and diffusers were fabricated by replica molding and discussed in this study. The fabricated microlenses have both good surface roughness and high-quality optical properties. Therefore, diffusers were fabricated by two-step replica molding. A high-intensity He-Ne laser beam was uniformly spread through diffusers. Experimental tests demonstrated that all PDMS elements are successfully fabricated by replica molding process and operated during optical measurement.

In this case, our groups presented various optical structures through the presented method, involving concave surface forming and soft replica molding. The method of concave surface forming is mainly for the fabrication of concave surface. The method of soft replica molding is mainly for the fabrication of replica. Concave and convex relief structures, including circular curved relief structures, convex relief structures with platform structures on the top, refractive beam-shaping elements, these structures with dual curvatures and asymmetric structures, can be easily made through the presented method, respectively. All processes of manufacture are in several simple steps without multistep optical lithography and complex masks.

A new nanoprojection lithography (NPL) is proposed to manufacture plasmonic nanogratings. Here, low-cost self-assembly elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane wavy structures are used as the interference modules, with their periods and amplitudes largely controlled by the applied mechanical strain in the synthesis process. Well-defined plasmonic grating couplers with desired feature sizes and wavelengths of operation were obtained. This NPL may enable large-area and flash manufacturing of plasmonic nanogratings with tunable array periods.

We demonstrate that a periodic metallic wavy-structure can be easily fabricated on elastomeric polydymethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. The metallic wavy-structures are self-assembly formed by thermal evaporation of Ag on PDMS without any lithography processes. The size of the PDMS substrate with an aspect ratio (the ratio of length to width) higher than 2 are found to be necessary to self-assemble the one-dimensional metallic wavy-structure. The period of the wavy-structure is controllable by varing the thickness of the deposited silver film. The elastomeric-gratings can excite surface plasmon on Ag/air interfaces; the resonant wavelength can be tuned to a range of 3.5% by applying an external mechanical strain.

Communication between cells and extracellular environments is of interest because of its critical roles in cell development and differentiation. Particularly, this signal transduction is commonly believed to rely on the contact and binding of the participating molecules/proteins, suggesting that the binding distance needed is less than a few nanometers. However, it is difficult to precisely match the rapidly binding interaction which depends on the probability of molecular collision in living systems, raising a hypothesis that another mechanism exists, could promote this signal communication, and remains unknown. Here we report that a long-range signal delivery over 10-μm and 20-μm polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) barriers can be observed in microfluidically tetracycline (Tet) inducible expression systems. Results show that a significant increment of the long-range induced green fluorescent protein in human embryonic kidney 293T (HEK 293T) cells by the stimulation of Tet is demonstrated, and that such a signal induction is not dominated by Tet diffusion and displays a specific bindingless property. In addition, our experimental results, combined with theoretical modeling, suggest that this communication exhibits a bump-shaped characteristic depending on barrier thickness, materially structural property, surface roughness, and agonist concentration. It strongly relies on the PDMS barrier to delivery signal; therefore, we call such a mechanism as “wired” cell communication instead of wireless. These results could ignite interests in the novel and “wired” cell communication, which we call it X-signal, and in the use of such systems for the study of cellular biology and development of new drug.

The cellular signal transduction is commonly believed to rely on the direct “contact” or “binding” of the participating molecule reaction that depends positively on the corresponding molecule concentrations. In living systems, however, it is somewhat difficult to precisely match the corresponding rapid “binding,” depending on the probability of molecular collision, existing in the cellular receptor-ligand interactions. Thus, a question arises that if there is another mechanism (i.e., bindingless) that could promote this signal communication. According to this hypothesis, we report a cellular model based on the examination of intracellular calcium concentration to explore whether the unidentified signal delivery in cells exists, via a microfluidic device. This device was designed to isolate the cells from directly contacting with the corresponding ligands/molecules by the particular polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes with different thicknesses. Results show a significant increment of calcium mobilization in human prostate cancer PC-3 cells by the stimulation of endothelin-1, even up to a separated distance of 95 μm. In addition, these stimulated signals exhibited a bump-shaped characteristics depending on the membrane thickness. When the PDMS membrane is capped by SiO2, a particular trait that resembles the ballistic signal conduction was observed. A theoretical model was developed to describe the signal transport process across the PDMS membrane. Taken together, these results indicate that the unidentified signal (ligand structural information) delivery could occur in cells and be examined by the proposed approach, exhibiting a bindingless communication manner. Moreover, this approach and our finding may offer new opportunities to establish a robust and cost-effective platform for the study of cellular biology and new drug development.

This study investigates a Au/SiO2/Au waveguide thermal emitter incorporating a metallic grating embedded in the SiO2 layer. The metal grating acts as a beam splitter, dividing the device into two waveguide structures determined by the polarization of the waveguide modes. The thermal radiation spectrum exhibits two peaks with orthogonal polarization. The emitted wavelengths of the two waveguide modes can be adjusted by controlling the thickness of the SiO2 layers on both sides of the metallic grating during the fabrication process. The emission peaks have ratios of the full width at half maximum to the peak wavelength of 0.057 and 0.05 for the TE and TM polarizations, respectively. These characteristics show the suitability of the device for multi-peaks and narrow bandwidth infrared light source applications.

The experimental results of light transmission through periodic array of H-shaped hole and more complicated hole which is a combination of multiple U shape are demonstrated. The observations indicate that the localized shape resonance in the longest resonant length of unfolded U-shaped part of the hole always appears. However, localized modes resonant in smaller U-shaped length don't always appear. Localized mode with non-U-shaped resonant path cannot be seen in our sample. In addition, localized mode with different order and resonant path can be excited by different polarized light.
