Abstract Background The reconstruction of complex wounds of the hand still has challenges in achieving aesthetic, functional and sensory recovery. We presented our experience of using the polyfoliate and chimeric radial collateral artery perforator flaps (RCAPF) to repair complex hand defects, aiming to explore the feasibility of special-form RCAPFs in hand coverage and enhance the comprehension of their respective indications. Methods From June 2014 to March 2021, 26 cases (19 males and 7 females, mean 44.4 years) underwent defect and sensation reconstruction of their hands with special-form RCAPFs, which manifested as multiple adjacent or irregular single wounds and composite tissue defects complicated with a degree of nerve injury. The clinical effects of the free RCAPFs were evaluated by integrating the postoperative and long-term follow-up outcomes of all cases. Results Altogether 8 polyfoliate flaps, 17 chimeric flaps and 1 polyfoliate-chimeric flap were harvested. Of them, 23 flaps survived uneventfully in one stage. Venous congestion occurred in 3 cases, two of which survived through vascular exploration and another one was finally repaired by the contralateral RCAPF. The follow-up results showed that the appearance of both the recipient and donor sites mostly recovered satisfactory. All the bone flaps properly healed. The BMRC sensory evaluation results of all skin flaps were S4 in 8 flaps, S3 in 18 flaps, and S2 in 9 flaps. Conclusions The free RCAPFs can be designed in various forms with a reliable blood supply, contributing to reconstructing simple and multiple wounds of the hand with or without bone defects and dead space.

Abstract Background Severe heart failure (HF) has a higher mortality during vulnerable period while targeted predictive tools, especially based on drug exposures, to accurately assess its prognoses remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to utilize drug information as the main predictor to develop and validate survival models for severe HF patients during this period. Methods We extracted severe HF patients from the MIMIC-IV database (as training and internal validation cohorts) as well as from the MIMIC-III database and local hospital (as external validation cohorts). Three algorithms, including Cox proportional hazards model (CoxPH), random survival forest (RSF), and deep learning survival prediction (DeepSurv), were applied to incorporate the parameters (partial hospitalization information and exposure durations of drugs) for constructing survival prediction models. The model performance was assessed mainly using area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC), brier score (BS), and decision curve analysis (DCA). The model interpretability was determined by the permutation importance and Shapley additive explanations values. Results A total of 11,590 patients were included in this study. Among the 3 models, the CoxPH model ultimately included 10 variables, while RSF and DeepSurv models incorporated 24 variables, respectively. All of the 3 models achieved respectable performance metrics while the DeepSurv model exhibited the highest AUC values and relatively lower BS among these models. The DCA also verified that the DeepSurv model had the best clinical practicality. Conclusions The survival prediction tools established in this study can be applied to severe HF patients during vulnerable period by mainly inputting drug treatment duration, thus contributing to optimal clinical decisions prospectively.

Abstract Background Polydactyly is a prevalent congenital anomaly with an incidence of 2.14 per 1000 live births in China. GLI family zinc finger 3 (GLI3) is a classical causative gene of polydactyly, and serves as a pivotal transcription factor in the hedgehog signaling pathway, regulating the development of the anterior-posterior axis in limbs. Methods Three pedigrees of polydactyly patients were enrolled from Hunan Province, China. Pathogenic variants were identified by whole-exome sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing. Results Three variants in GLI3 were identified in three unrelated families, including a novel deletion variant (c.1372del, p.Thr458GlnfsTer44), a novel insertion-deletion (indel) variant (c.1967_1968delinsAA, p.Ser656Ter), and a nonsense variant (c.2374 C > T, p.Arg792Ter). These variants were present exclusively in patients but not in healthy individuals. Conclusions We identified three pathogenic GLI3 variants in polydactyly patients, broadening the genetic spectrum of GLI3 and contributing significantly to genetic counseling and diagnosis for polydactyly.

We obtain the existence of nonnegative solution for this system by mountain pass theorem in a new framework.

Abstract Background Few studies have compared the correlation between visceral fat area (VFA) and abdominal subcutaneous fat area (SFA) with arterial stiffness (AS) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). In addition, there is currently controversy regarding the correlation between VFA and SFA with AS. We aimed to investigate the relationship between VFA and SFA with AS in patients with T2D. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 1475 Chinese T2D patients with an average age of 52.32 ± 10.96 years were included. VFA and SFA were determined by a dual bioelectrical impedance analyzer, and AS was determined by measurement of brachial-ankle pulse wave conduction velocity (baPWV). Atherosclerosis was deemed present in study participants with baPWV values higher than 75th percentile (1781 cm/s). Independent correlations of logVFA and logSFA with AS were assessed using multiple linear regression and multivariate logistic regression. Results The baPWV was linked with VFA, waist circumference, and women’s SFA in a general linear correlation study (P 0.05). Conclusions Compared with SFA, VFA had a stronger independent positive correlation with AS in Chinese T2D patients. Patients with T2D should pay more attention to monitoring VFA and lowering it to minimize cardiovascular events.

Abstract Introduction Perioperative urinary tract infections (PUTIs) are common in the United States and are a significant contributor to high healthcare costs. There is a lack of large studies on the risk factors for PUTIs after total hysterectomy (TH). Methods We conducted a retrospective study using a national inpatient sample (NIS) of 445,380 patients from 2010 to 2019 to analyze the risk factors and annual incidence of PUTIs associated with TH perioperatively. The trade-off and synergy relationship of ecosystem services is an important topic in the current assessment. The value of each service provided by the ecosystem is substantially affected by human activities, and conversely, its changes will also affect the relevant human decisions. Due to varying trade-offs among ecosystem services and synergies between them that can either increase or decrease, it is difficult to optimize multiple ecosystem services simultaneously, making it a huge challenge for ecosystem management. This study firstly develops a global Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) accounting framework. It uses remote sensing data with a spatial resolution of 1 km to estimate the ecosystem services of forests, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, and farmlands in 179 major countries in 2018. The results show that the range of global GEP values is USD 112–197 trillion, with an average value of USD 155 trillion (the constant price), and the ratio of GEP to gross domestic product (GDP) is 1.85. The trade-offs and the synergies among different ecosystem services in each continent and income group have been further explored. We found a correspondence between the income levels and the synergy among ecosystem services within each nation. Among specific ecosystem services, there are strong synergies between oxygen release, climate regulation, and carbon sequestration services. A trade-off relationship has been observed between flood regulation and other services, such as water conservation and soil retention services in low-income countries. The results will help clarify the roles and the feedback mechanisms between different stakeholders and provide a scientific basis for optimizing ecosystem management and implementing ecological compensation schemes to enhance human well-being.

Amidst the rapid advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and the burgeoning field of Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA), this study employs spatial positioning technology as a case study to investigate the potential of multimodal data in assessing children's social development. This study combines the spatial positioning data of preschool children collected during free play sessions in natural educational settings and the spatial metrics constructed based on observational studies to establish and validate a sociometric status Decision Tree classification model. The findings suggest that the model can overall accurately identify children with three distinct sociometric statuses, albeit with some variability in efficacy across different sociometric groups and age groups. Notably, the model demonstrates a high hitting rate in identifying the potentially neglected children, providing valuable support for educators in understanding and fostering children's developmental needs. This study also highlights the advantages of emerging technology and multimodal data application in child development assessment.

Background: Emerging evidence has shown the potential involvement of phthalates (PAEs) exposure in the development of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Metabolomics can reflect endogenous metabolites variation in the progress of disease after chemicals exposure. However, little is known about the association between PAEs, gut microbiota and metabolome in DLB. Objective: We aim to explore the intricate relationship among urinary PAEs metabolites (mPAEs), dysbiosis of gut bacteria, and metabolite profiles in DLB. Methods: A total of 43 DLB patients and 45 normal subjects were included in this study. Liquid chromatography was used to analyze the levels of mPAEs in the urine of the two populations. High-throughput sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry were used to analyze gut microbiota and the profile of gut metabolome, respectively. The fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment was performed to verify the potential role of mPAEs on gut dysbiosis contribute to aggravating cognitive dysfunction in α-synuclein tg DLB/PD mice. Results: The DLB patients had higher DEHP metabolites (MEOHP, MEHHP and MEHP), MMP and MnBP, lower MBP and MBzP than the control group and different microbiota. A significantly higher abundance of Ruminococcus gnavus and lower Prevotella copri, Prevotella stercorea and Bifidobacterium were observed in DLB. Higher 3 DEHP metabolites, MMP, MnBP and lower MBP and MBzP were significantly negatively associated with Prevotella copri, Prevotella stercorea and Bifidobacterium. Additionally, using metabolomics, we found that altered bile acids, short-chain fatty acids and amino acids metabolism are linked to these mPAEs. We further found that FMT of fecal microbiota from highest DEHP metabolites donors significantly impaired cognitive function in the germ-free DLB/PD mice. Conclusion: Our study suggested that PAEs exposure may alter the microbiota-gut-brain axis and providing novel insights into the interactions among environmental perturbations and microbiome-host in pathogenesis of DLB.

Abstract Acute gastric bleeding (AGB) is a common and potentially serious complication in patients with gastrointestinal disorders. Nursing interventions play a critical role in the management of acute gastric bleeding, but their impact on clinical outcomes is not well understood. The aim of this retrospective analysis was to evaluate the impact of nursing interventions on clinical outcomes in patients with acute gastric bleeding. A retrospective review of medical records was conducted for 220 patients with acute gastric bleeding who were admitted to the hospital between February 2022 and February 2023. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether or not they received nursing interventions during their hospital stay. Clinical outcomes, including length of hospital stay, blood transfusion requirements, and mortality rates, were compared between the two groups using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis. Of the 220 patients included in the study, 168 (76.4%) received nursing interventions during their hospital stay. Patients who received nursing interventions had a significantly shorter length of hospital stay (mean = 7.2 days, SD = 2.1) compared to those who did not receive nursing interventions (mean = 10.5 days, SD = 3.4, p

Abstract Intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) of bladder cancer (BLCA) contributes to therapy resistance and immune evasion affecting clinical prognosis. The molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to BLCA ITH generation remain elusive. It is found that a TM4SF1‐positive cancer subpopulation (TPCS) can generate ITH in BLCA, evidenced by integrative single cell atlas analysis. Extensive profiling of the epigenome and transcriptome of all stages of BLCA revealed their evolutionary trajectories. Distinct ancestor cells gave rise to low‐grade noninvasive and high‐grade invasive BLCA. Epigenome reprograming led to transcriptional heterogeneity in BLCA. During early oncogenesis, epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition generated TPCS. TPCS has stem‐cell‐like properties and exhibited transcriptional plasticity, priming the development of transcriptionally heterogeneous descendent cell lineages. Moreover, TPCS prevalence in tumor is associated with advanced stage cancer and poor prognosis. The results of this study suggested that bladder cancer interacts with its environment by acquiring a stem cell‐like epigenomic landscape, which might generate ITH without additional genetic diversification.

IntroductionPrevious studies highlight the negative impact of adverse socioeconomic conditions throughout life on motor skills and cognitive health. Factors such as cognitive activity, physical activity, lifestyle, and socioeconomic position significantly affect general health status and brain health. This pilot study investigates the relationships among the Area Deprivation Index (ADI)—a measure of neighborhood-level socioeconomic deprivation, brain structure (cortical volume and thickness), and cognitive status in adults in Arizona. Identifying measures sensitive to ADI could elucidate mechanisms driving cognitive decline.MethodsThe study included 22 adults(mean age = 56.2 ± 15.2) in Arizona, residing in the area for over 10 years(mean = 42.7 ± 15.8). We assessed specific cognitive domains using the NeuroTrax™ cognitive screening test, which evaluates memory, executive function, visual–spatial processing, attention, information processing speed, and motor function. We also measured cortical thickness and volume in 10 cortical regions using FreeSurfer 7.2. Linear regression tests were conducted to examine the relationships between ADI metrics, cognitive status, and brain health measures.ResultsResults indicated a significant inverse relationship between ADI metrics and memory scores, explaining 25% of the variance. Objective: To examine the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness with executive function, episodic memory, and global cognition and sex differences in these associations in community-dwelling older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Design: A cross-sectional study using baseline data from the aerobic exercise and cognitive training (ACT) trial. Setting: The ACT trial conducted exercise testing in an exercise laboratory and data collections in a research facility. Participants: ACT trial participants were recruited through referrals, registries, exhibits, flyers, media, and advertisements and screened for eligibility. To be eligible for this study, ACT enrollees needed complete data on all study variables. Among 146 ACT enrollees, 142 met eligibility for this study (N=142). Interventions: None. Main Outcome Measures: Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured as peak oxygen consumption (Vo2peak) with a peak cycle-ergometer test, executive function with the EXAMINER, episodic memory with the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised, and global cognition with Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Results: The average age of the sample was 73.8±5.8 years with 16.9±2.9 years of education, with 87.3% White, 51.4% men, and 69.7% married. After controlling for covariates, Vo2peak was significantly related to executive function (b=.037, standard error [SE]=0.015, P=.0154, semipartial [sr] correlation coefficient=.239) and episodic memory (b=.590, SE=0.226, P=.0102, sr=.216), but not global cognition (b=.074, SE=0.055, P=.1837, sr=.125). For men, Vo2peak was significantly associated with executive function (b=.063, SE=0.024, P=.0099, r=.430) and episodic memory (b=1.088, SE=0.312, P=.0009, r=.382). Conclusions: Our findings show that Vo2peak was associated with executive function and episodic memory in the overall sample and in men. Future studies can examine the longitudinal relations between cardiorespiratory fitness and cognition.

Objective: Management of large irregular wounds in children had been confusing plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Herein, this study was aimed to propose a new treatment method based on the principle of adapting different recipient zones to overcome the intractable wounds, simplifying and programing the design process of targeted flaps for covering large irregular soft-tissue defects. Patients and methods: From January 2009 to December 2020, 31 children (9 girls and 22 boys) aged 3–16 years (mean 9.8 years) underwent multiple modular flaps with edge to edge splicing reconstruction of the lower extremities. All the wounds were large with non-adjacent defects and with or without a dead space. Several variants of flaps were harvested according to the needs and reconstruction requirements of patients. Results: A total of 71 flaps were harvested from 31 patients and all flaps donor sites received primary closure. Nine patients underwent split-thickness skin grafting, and three cases of flaps survived from vascular crisis by rebuilding the vessels and the rest accepting LD flap transplants. And five partial necrosis of the distal epidermis flaps recovered using skin grafting and dressing change. No major complication was encountered in other patients and donor sites, except one heel ulcer. During the follow-up (ranging from 16 to 38 months, mean 27.7 months), aesthetic and functional results of reconstructed limbs were satisfactory in all patients. Conclusions: The Individualized design program of multiple flaps for adapting different recipient zones is an alternative for repairing large irregular soft-tissue defects in children, beneficial for plastic and reconstructive surgeons to simplify and program the process of designing and perform multiple flaps to achieve this goal. Summary: Mitochondria-ER contact sites (MERCS) are involved in energy homeostasis, redox and Ca2+ signaling, and inflammation. MERCS are heavily studied; however, little is known about their regulation during mitosis. Here, we show that MERCS expand during mitosis in three cell types using various approaches, including transmission electron microscopy, serial EM coupled to 3D reconstruction, and a split GFP MERCS marker. We further show enhanced Ca2+ transfer between the ER and mitochondria using either direct Ca2+ measurements or by quantifying the activity of Ca2+-dependent mitochondrial dehydrogenases. Collectively, our results support a lengthening of MERCS in mitosis that is associated with improved Ca2+ coupling between the two organelles. This augmented Ca2+ coupling could be important to support the increased energy needs of the cell during mitosis.

Abstract Background Application of the thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flap is known to be a popular and reliable method for extremity reconstruction. This manuscript presents our clinical outcomes in reconstructing soft tissue defects using simple and advanced TDAP flaps. Methods From 2013 to 2022, 53 patients with a mean age of 23 years (ranging from 2 to 72 years) underwent reconstructive surgery with different patterns of free TDAP flaps, including chimeric TDAP flaps, double skin paddle TDAP flaps, flow-through TDAP flaps, conjoined TDAP flaps, and microdissected debulking TDAP flaps. Results All TDAP flaps survived. The size of the TDAP skin paddle ranged between 5 × 3 and 25 × 10 cm2. Primary closure of the donor site was achieved in all patients in the simple application group, and one patient in the advanced application group underwent partial skin grafting. Partial flap loss occurred in one case in the simple TDAP flap group and four cases in the advanced application group. There was one case of flap bulkiness and two cases of scar hyperplasia in the simple TDAP flap group. The mean follow-up duration was 11 months (4–46 months). Conclusions The free TDAP flap, with five types of advanced applications, makes it versatile for reconstructing different kinds of soft tissue defects of the extremities that can be used to achieve individualized defect reconstruction, minimize donor site morbidities, and an aesthetic appearance.

Abstract Bergenia purpurascens is an important medicinal, edible and ornamental plant. It generally grows in high-altitude areas with complex climates. There have been no reports about how B. purpurascens survives under cold stress. Here, the B. purpurascens under low temperature were subjected to transcriptomics analysis to explore the candidate genes and pathways that involved in the cold tolerance of B. purpurascens. Compared with the control treatment, we found 9,600 up-regulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 7,055 down-regulated DEGs. A significant number of DEGs were involved in the Ca2+ signaling pathway, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade, plant hormone signaling pathway, and lipid metabolism. A total of 400 transcription factors were found to respond to cold stress, most of which belonged to the MYB and AP2/ERF families. Five novel genes were found to be potential candidate genes involved in the cold tolerance of B. purpurascens. The study provide insights into further investigation of the molecular mechanism of how B. purpurascens survives under cold stress.

Abstract Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) poses a significant social and economic burden worldwide. Identifying exposures, risk factors, and biological mechanisms that are causally connected to MDD can help build a scientific basis for disease prevention and development of novel therapeutic approaches. Methods In this systematic review, we assessed the evidence for causal relationships between putative causal risk factors and MDD from Mendelian randomization (MR) studies, following PRISMA. We assessed methodological quality based on key elements of the MR design: use of a full instrumental variable analysis and validation of the three key MR assumptions. Results We included methodological details and results from 52 articles. A causal link between lifestyle, metabolic, inflammatory biomarkers, particular pathological states and MDD is supported by MR investigations, although results for each category varied substantially. Conclusions While this review shows how MR can offer useful information for examining prospective treatment targets and better understanding the pathophysiology of MDD, some methodological flaws in the existing literature limit reliability of results and probably underlie their heterogeneity. We highlight perspectives and recommendations for future works on MR in psychiatry.

Germplasm resource innovation is a crucial factor for cultivar development, particularly within the context of hybrid rice breeding based on the three-line system. Quan 9311A, a cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) line, has been successfully cultivated using rice restoration materials and extensively employed as a female parent in hybrid breeding program in China. This line was developed by crossing the CMS line Zhong 9A with a two-line restorer line 93-11, with the intention of eliminating the restoring ability of 93-11 while retaining the sterility gene WA352c from Zhong 9A. Quan 9311A effectively amalgamates the most favorable agronomic traits from both parental lines. In this study, the relationship between phenotypic characteristics and the known functional genes of Quan 9311A were analyzed using the rice genome navigation technology based on whole-genome sequencing. The findings revealed that Quan 9311A harbors multiple superior alleles from both 93-11 and Zhong 9A, providing exceptional agronomic traits that are unavailable in earlier CMS lines. Despite the removal of the fertility restorer gene Rf3 from 93-11, numerous chromosomal segments from 93-11 persist in the Quan 9311A genome. Furthermore, the hybrid rice Quanyousimiao (QYSM) and the restorer line Wushansimiao (WSSM) were used as examples to illustrate the important role of Quan 9311A as the female parent in heterosis. It was found that QYSM carries a great number of superior alleles, which accounts for its high grain yield and wide adaptability. These insights not only advanced the utilization of hybrid rice pairing groups but also provided guidance for future breeding endeavors. The study introduced innovative concepts to further integrate genomics with traditional breeding techniques. Ultimately, Quan 9311A signified a significant milestone in rice breeding technology, opening up novel avenues for hybrid rice development.

Surfactants are widely used in fields such as oil recovery and flotation. The properties and mechanisms of surfactants can be effectively studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Herein, the aggregation behavior of surfactants was studied at the oil–water interface by MD simulation, and the micro-morphology of surfactants was analyzed under a low concentration and saturated state at the oil–water interface, respectively. The visualization results of the MD simulation showed that DTOA was saturated at the oil–water interface at 120 surfactant molecules, whereas 160 surfactant molecules were required for BEMA. In addition, the effect of surfactant concentration on the interfacial thickness and hydrogen bond distribution was studied, with the inflection point of hydrogen bond distribution identified as a characteristic parameter for surfactant saturation at the oil–water interface. The aggregation behavior of their hydrophobic and hydrophilic chains at the oil–water interface was qualitatively assessed using order parameters. Finally, the aggregation state of surfactants in salt-containing systems was studied, and it was found that the surfactants could effectively adsorb magnesium ions and calcium ions at the oil–water interface. However, the curve of the number of hydrogen bonds varies greatly, with a possible reason being that BEMA has a different coordination manner with diverse metal ions. This study provides some original insights into both the theoretical study and practical application of anionic and nonionic surfactants.

A power-law formulation rooted in percolation theory has proven effective in depicting the vertical distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) in temperate forest subsoils. While the model suggests the solute as the primary factor distributing SOC, this may not hold true in the surface soil in which roots contribute significantly to the SOC. This study in the Changbai Mountains Mixed Forests ecoregion (CMMF) evaluates the SOC profiles in three forests to assess the model’s efficacy throughout the soil column. Prediction of the SOC profile based on the regional average values was also assessed using field data. The observed scaling aligned well with predictions in mixed broadleaved and broadleaved Korean pine mixed forests, but disparities emerged in birch forest, possibly due to waterlogging. The predicted SOC levels correlate strongly with the field data and align well with the normalized average SOC levels. The findings suggest that the model remains applicable in the CMMF when considering root-derived carbon. However, the hindrance of solute transport may have a greater impact than roots do. The spatial heterogeneity of the SOC means that a single predicted SOC value at a specific depth may not fit all sites, but the overall agreement highlights the potential of the model for predicting the average or representative SOC profiles, which could further aid in regional-scale carbon stock estimation.

Summary: RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) regulate gene expression both co-transcriptionally and post-transcriptionally. Here, we provide a protocol for photoactivatable ribonucleoside-enhanced crosslinking and immunoprecipitation followed by next-generation sequencing (PAR-CLIP-seq). PAR-CLIP-seq is a transcriptome-scale technique for identifying in vivo binding sites of RBPs at the single-nucleotide level. The global concern for environmental protection has driven the demand for corporate environmental accounting information, especially in heavily polluting industries. Currently, there are deficiencies in China's research on environmental accounting information and its institutional development, and there is an urgent need for improved evaluation systems and models. The study proposes the RAGA-PP model, which is an environmental accounting information disclosure evaluation model that combines accelerated genetic algorithm and projection tracing algorithm. The model is based on 28 secondary evaluation indicators and aims to optimize the projection tracing through the accelerated genetic algorithm with real number coding to improve the stability and accuracy of data analysis. The experiment proves that the evaluation error value of the RAGA-PP model is 3.45 % on average, which is significantly lower compared to 9.55 % of the ant colony algorithm. The results show that the RAGA-PP model has significant advantages in accurately evaluating the quality of corporate environmental information disclosure, which confirms its application value in environmental accounting information disclosure in heavy pollution industries. The purpose of the study is to promote the improvement of the environmental accounting information disclosure system and to provide support for enhancing corporate environmental awareness and social responsibility.

BackgroundColorectal cancer (CRC) is the 3rd most common cancer in men and 2nd most common malignancy in females across the globe leading to high mortality rates. Frailty is an age-related syndrome that has been associated with high morbidity and mortality. This systematic review aimed to examine if frailty can predict long-term (>1 year) outcomes of patients with CRC.MethodsThis PROSPERO registered review examined the databases of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science till 4th September 2023 for cohort studies assessing the association between frailty and long-term outcomes of CRC.Results15 studies with 45288 patients were included. 6573 patients (14.5%) were frail. Meta-analysis demonstrated that frailty was associated with statistically significant poor overall survival (OS) (HR: 2.11 95% CI: 1.44, 3.08 I2 = 94%) (14 studies), cancer-specific survival (CSS) (HR: 4.59 95% CI: 2.75, 7.67 I2 = 38%) (2 studies), and disease-free survival (DFS) (HR: 1.46 95% CI: 1.28, 1.66 I2 = 0%) (5 studies) after CRC. Subgroup analysis for OS based on study type, location, sample size, stage of cancer, percentage with frailty, treatment, adjustment for CRC stage and comorbidities, and follow-up did not change the results. These results were not altered in significance on sensitivity analysis.ConclusionOur results show that frail CRC patients have poor OS and DFS as compared to non-frail patients. Solar-driven steam generation technology is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective means of sewage treatment and seawater desalination. A significant challenge in the development of this technology is improving the evaporation performance of evaporation devices. Herein, we report an innovative three-dimensional (3D) solar evaporator constructed with MXene-TiOX nanocomposite as the photothermal layer and polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel as the water-transport medium. An inverted cone-concave structure of 30° on the photothermal layer can absorb more sunlight through diffuse light reflection. The 3D solar evaporator demonstrates a notable evaporation rate of 2.09 kg m⁻² h⁻¹ , surpassing the efficacy of alternative evaporative systems. In the seawater desalination experiment, the condensed water had salinity levels that were considerably lower than the established threshold for drinking water. The ion rejection ratios for the four primary ions demonstrate a high level of efficacy, with values approaching 99.91%. In addition, the 3D solar evaporator exhibits robust performance in the context of wastewater treatment. This study provides significant contributions to the understanding of the efficiency of solar evaporators based on structural design principles, offering approaches to mitigate the challenges posed by limited freshwater availability.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects Latinos disproportionately. One of the reasons underlying this disparity may be type 2 diabetes (T2D) that is a risk factor for AD. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of T2D and AD blood biomarkers and the differences in these associations between Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic Whites. This study was a secondary analysis of baseline data from the observational Health and Aging Brain Study: Health Disparities (HABS-HD) that investigated factors underlying health disparities in AD in Mexican Americans in comparison to non-Hispanic Whites. HABS-HD participants were excluded if they had missing data or were large outliers (z-scores >|4|) on a given AD biomarker. Fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels were measured from clinical labs. T2D was diagnosed by licensed clinicians. Plasma amyloid-beta 42 and 40 (Aβ42/42) ratio, total tau (t-tau), and neurofilament light (NfL) were measured via ultra-sensitive Simoa assays. The sample sizes were 1,552 for Aβ42/40 ratio, 1,570 for t-tau, and 1,553 for NfL. Mexican Americans were younger (66.6±8.7 vs. 69.5±8.6) and had more female (64.9% female vs. 55.1%) and fewer years of schooling (9.5±4.6 vs. 15.6±2.5) than non-Hispanic Whites. Mexican Americans differed significantly from non-Hispanic Whites in blood glucose (113.5±36.6 vs. 99.2±17.0) and HbA1c (6.33±1.4 vs. 5.51±0.6) levels, T2D diagnosis (35.3% vs. 11.1%), as well as blood Aβ42/40 ratio (.051±.012 vs. .047±.011), t-tau (2.56±.95 vs. 2.33±.90), and NfL levels (16.3±9.5 vs. 20.3±10.3). Blood glucose, blood HbA1c, and T2D diagnosis were not related to Aβ42/40 ratio and t-tau but explained 3.7% of the variation in NfL (p < .001). Blood glucose and T2D diagnosis were not, while HbA1c was positively (b = 2.31, p < .001, β = 0.26), associated with NfL among Mexican Americans. In contrast, blood glucose, HbA1c, and T2D diagnosis were negatively (b = -0.09, p < .01, β = -0.26), not (b = 0.34, p = .71, β = 0.04), and positively (b = 3.32, p < .01, β = 0.33) associated with NfL, respectively in non-Hispanic Whites. To conclude, blood glucose and HbA1c levels and T2D diagnosis are associated with plasma NfL levels, but not plasma Aβ and t-tau levels. These associations differ in an ethnicity-specific manner and need to be further studied as a potential mechanism underlying AD disparities.

Research articles in the clinical and translational science literature commonly use quantitative data to inform evaluation of interventions, learn about the etiology of disease, or develop methods for diagnostic testing or risk prediction of future events. The peer review process must evaluate the methodology used therein, including use of quantitative statistical methods. In this manuscript, we provide guidance for peer reviewers tasked with assessing quantitative methodology, intended to complement guidelines and recommendations that exist for manuscript authors. We describe components of clinical and translational science research manuscripts that require assessment including study design and hypothesis evaluation, sampling and data acquisition, interventions (for studies that include an intervention), measurement of data, statistical analysis methods, presentation of the study results, and interpretation of the study results. For each component, we describe what reviewers should look for and assess; how reviewers should provide helpful comments for fixable errors or omissions; and how reviewers should communicate uncorrectable and irreparable errors. We then discuss the critical concepts of transparency and acceptance/revision guidelines when communicating with responsible journal editors.

Background: Vascular health is increasingly recognized for its roles in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The objective of this study was to investigate effects of exercise training, dose, and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on neurotrophic factors in community-dwelling, older adults with mild-to-moderate AD dementia. Methods: This was a pilot blood ancillary study of the FIT-AD trial. Participants in the parent study were randomized to 6-month aerobic exercise (AEx) or stretching control. For this ancillary study, resting plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), irisin, fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) biomarkers were assessed at baseline, 3, and 6 months. Estimates of within- and between- group effect sizes were calculated (Cohen’s d). Relationships of biomarker change with dose and CRF change were explored with multivariable linear regression and repeated measures correlations. Results: The sample (n = 26, 18 AEx/8 stretching) averaged 77.6 ± 6.9 years old, with the majority being male (65.4%), and non-Hispanic White (92.3%); between-group effect sizes were generally small except for irisin (d = −0.44)), AEx group relative to stretching group. Associations of dose and changes in CRF with changes in neurotrophic biomarker were weak (r2 ≤ 0.025). Conclusions: The effects of exercise on BDNF, irisin, IGF-1, and FGF-21 were heterogeneous in AD. Our findings need validation in future, adequately powered exercise studies in AD.

In this present study, AA 7072/7075/7072 composite sheets with different finish rolling temperatures (210–350 °C) were prepared by the muti-pass hot finish rolling process. Effects of final rolling temperature on microstructure and properties of AA 7072/7075/7072 composite sheets were investigated after aging (AA 7075-T6 composite) via optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). It was found that bendability of AA 7075-T6 composite alloy is highly dependent on finish rolling temperature. The results show that when increasing the finish rolling temperature, the tensile properties of 7075 hot rolled (7075-F) decreases, while tensile properties of 7075 annealed (7075-O) composites sheets increase. With excessive finish rolling temperature (280 °C and above), grain is not uniform along the thickness direction and texture was dominated by Goss texture. Bending test results show that break occurred for AA7075-T6 composite sheet when the finish rolling temperature was 280 °C and above. Texture and inhomogeneous coarse grain propagate formation of crack and degenerate bendability of the alloy.

Abstract Chloride channels (CLCs) transport anion across membrane to regulate ion homeostasis and acidification of intracellular organelles, and are divided into anion channels and anion/proton antiporters. Arabidopsis thaliana CLCa (AtCLCa) transporter localizes to the tonoplast which imports NO3 − and to a less extent Cl− from cytoplasm. The activity of AtCLCa and many other CLCs is regulated by nucleotides and phospholipids, however, the molecular mechanism remains unclear. Here we determine the cryo-EM structures of AtCLCa bound with NO3 − and Cl−, respectively. Both structures are captured in ATP and PI(4,5)P2 bound conformation. Structural and electrophysiological analyses reveal a previously unidentified N-terminal β-hairpin that is stabilized by ATP binding to block the anion transport pathway, thereby inhibiting the AtCLCa activity. While AMP loses the inhibition capacity due to lack of the β/γ- phosphates required for β-hairpin stabilization. This well explains how AtCLCa senses the ATP/AMP status to regulate the physiological nitrogen-carbon balance. Our data further show that PI(4,5)P2 or PI(3,5)P2 binds to the AtCLCa dimer interface and occupies the proton-exit pathway, which may help to understand the inhibition of AtCLCa by phospholipids to facilitate guard cell vacuole acidification and stomatal closure. In a word, our work suggests the regulatory mechanism of AtCLCa by nucleotides and phospholipids under certain physiological scenarios and provides new insights for future study of CLCs.

Abstract A high-methionine (HM) diet leads to hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), while gastrointestinal tissue is an important site of net homocysteine (Hcy) production. However, the role of the gut microbiota in host HHcy remains obscure. This study aimed to determine whether gut microbiota ablation could alleviate host HHcy and glucose intolerance and reveal the underlying mechanism. The results showed that the HM diet-induced HHcy and glucose intolerance in mice, while antibiotic administration decreased the plasma level of Hcy and reversed glucose intolerance. HM diet increased intestinal epithelial homocysteine levels, while antibiotic treatment decreased intestinal epithelial homocysteine levels under the HM diet. Gut microbiota depletion had no effect on the gene expression and enzyme activity of CBS and BHMT in the livers of HM diet-fed mice. The HM diet altered the composition of the gut microbiota with marked increases in the abundances of Faecalibaculum and Dubosiella, which were also positively correlated with plasma Hcy concentrations. An in-depth analysis of the bacterial cysteine and methionine metabolism pathways showed that the abundances of two homocysteine biosynthesis-related KEGG orthologies (KOs) were markedly increased in the gut microbiota in HM diet-fed mice. Hcy was detected from Dubosiella newyorkensis-cultured supernatant by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC‒MS) analysis. In conclusion, these findings suggested that the HM diet-induced HHcy and glucose intolerance in mice, by reshaping the composition of the gut microbiota, which might produce and secrete Hcy.

The hot compression simulation testing machine was utilized to conduct compression experiments on an Al-Mg-Si-Mn alloy containing the rare earth element Sc at a deformation temperature ranging from 450 to 550 °C and a strain rate of 0.01 to 10 s−1. The study focused on the hot deformation behavior of the aluminum alloy, resulting in the determination of the optimal range of deformation process parameters for the alloy. The relationship between material flow stress, deformation temperature, and strain rate was described using the Arrhenius relationship containing thermal activation energy based on the stress-strain curve of hot compression deformation of aluminum alloy. This led to calculations for structural factor A, stress index n, and stress level parameters as well as thermal deformation activation energy to establish a constitutive Formula for hot deformation rheological stress of aluminum alloy and calculate the power dissipation factor η. Through this process, an optimized range for the optimal deformation process parameter for aluminum alloy was determined (deformation temperature: 490~510 °C; strain rate: 0.05 s−1) and verified in combination with mechanical properties and microstructure through hot extrusion deformation trial production.

Baccatin III is a crucial precursor in the biosynthesis pathway of paclitaxel. Its main sources are extraction from Taxus or chemical synthesis using 10-deacetylbaccatin III (10-DAB) as substrate. However, these preparation approaches exhibit serious limitations, including the low content of baccatin III in Taxus and the complicated steps of chemical synthesis. Heterologous expression of 10-deacetylbaccatin III-10-O-acetyltransferase (TcDBAT) in microbial strains for biotransformation of 10-DAB is a promising alternative strategy for baccatin III production. Here, the promotion effects of glycerol supply and slightly acidic conditions with a low-temperature on the catalysis of recombinant TcDBAT strain were clarified using 10-DAB as substrate. Taxus needles is renewable and the content of 10-DAB is relatively high, it can be used as an effective source of the catalytic substrate 10-DAB. Baccatin III was synthesized by integrating the extraction of 10-DAB from renewable Taxus needles and in situ whole-cell catalysis in this study. 40 g/L needles were converted into 20.66 mg/L baccatin III by optimizing and establishing a whole-cell catalytic bioprocess. The method used in this study can shorten the production process of Taxus extraction for baccatin III synthesis and provide a reliable strategy for the efficient production of baccatin III by recombinant strains and the improvement of resource utilization rate of Taxus needles.

Abstract Background Globally, despite prostate cancer (PCa) representing second most prevalent malignancy in male, the precise molecular mechanisms implicated in its pathogenesis remain unclear. Consequently, elucidating the key molecular regulators that govern disease progression could substantially contribute to the establishment of novel therapeutic strategies, ultimately advancing the management of PCa. Methods A total of 49 PCa tissues and 43 adjacent normal tissues were collected from January 2017 to December 2021 at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. The advanced transcriptomic methodologies were employed to identify differentially expressed mRNAs in PCa. The expression of aspartoacylase (ASPA) in PCa was thoroughly evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting techniques. To elucidate the inhibitory role of ASPA in PCa cell proliferation and metastasis, a comprehensive set of in vitro and in vivo assays were conducted, including orthotopic and tumor-bearing mouse models (n = 8 for each group). A combination of experimental approaches, such as Western blotting, luciferase assays, immunoprecipitation assays, mass spectrometry, glutathione S-transferase pull-down experiments, and rescue studies, were employed to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of ASPA’s action in PCa. The Student’s t-test was employed to assess the statistical significance between two distinct groups, while one-way analysis of variance was utilized for comparisons involving more than two groups. A two-sided P value of less than 0.05 was deemed to indicate statistical significance. Results ASPA was identified as a novel inhibitor of PCa progression. The expression of ASPA was found to be significantly down-regulated in PCa tissue samples, and its decreased expression was independently associated with patients’ prognosis (HR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.40–0.92, P = 0.018). Our experiments demonstrated that modulation of ASPA activity, either through gain- or loss-of-function, led to the suppression or enhancement of PCa cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, respectively. The inhibitory role of ASPA in PCa was further confirmed using orthotopic and tumor-bearing mouse models. Mechanistically, ASPA was shown to directly interact with the LYN and inhibit the phosphorylation of LYN as well as its downstream targets, JNK1/2 and C-Jun, in both PCa cells and mouse models, in an enzyme-independent manner. Importantly, the inhibition of LYN activation by bafetinib abrogated the promoting effect of ASPA knockdown on PCa progression in both in vitro and in vivo models. Moreover, we observed an inverse relationship between ASPA expression and LYN activity in clinical PCa samples, suggesting a potential regulatory role of ASPA in modulating LYN signaling. Conclusion Our findings provide novel insights into the tumor-suppressive function of ASPA in PCa and highlight its potential as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for the management of this malignancy.

Abstract Purpose Large B‐cell lymphoma with IRF4 rearrangement (LBCL, IRF4+) has been recently recognized as a specific entity that is frequently associated with young age and favorable prognosis. However, whether the good outcome of the disease is due to IRF4+ or other factors remains obscure. We thus analyzed 100 young patients with primary head and neck LBCL to see the clinicopathologic correlates of IRF4+. Methods The histopathology, immunophenotype, IRF4 status of the tumors, and clinical data were reviewed. Results Twenty‐one tumors were diagnosed as LBCL, IRF4+, which were more frequently associated with a follicular growth pattern, medium‐sized blastoid cytology, germinal center B‐cell‐like, and CD5+ phenotype, compared with IRF4− ones. While most of the patients received chemotherapy with or without radiation, eight IRF4+ patients received mere surgical resection of the tumor and exhibited excellent outcome. IRF4+ cases featured a significantly higher complete remission rate, and better survivals compared with IRF4− ones. Multivariate analysis confirmed IRF4+ correlates with a better survival. Conclusion Our work confirmed the unique clinicopathologic features of LBCL, IRF4+, and disclosed for the first time the independent favorable prognostic impact of IRF4+. These findings may further unravel the heterogeneity of LBCL occurring in youth, and aid in risk stratification and tailoring the therapeutic strategy.

The influence of low-frequency electromagnetic casting (LFEC) and Sc addition as variables on the microstructure, properties, and deformation behavior of 7A36 aluminum alloy has been systematically examined. The results have predicted that the LFEC could make the grains of the as-cast alloy finer by electromagnetic stirring and forced convection. By the addition of Sc, the average diameters of the equiaxed grains have been reduced and the intensity of the fiber texture has become weakened. The fine and continuous η′ precipitates on the grain boundaries (GBs) instead of the coarse large-sized discontinuous η′ precipitates, which results in a more uniform distribution of plastic deformation and which is beneficial for improving plasticity. By adding Sc and applying LFEC, the large size η′ internal grain precipitated phase decreased slightly. The fine nano-sized Al3(Sc, Zr) phase particles were dispersed in the matrix. As the dislocation movement had to travel less distance, that's why this process consumed less energy. These features also reduced the strain difference within the grain and near the grain boundary, which result in the increase of EL. The excellent mechanical properties of 7A36 aluminum as extruded plates were obtained when it was aged at 120 °C for 8 h by Sc micro-alloying and applying LFEC. The yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) remained at 738.3 MPa and 767.0 MPa, respectively, while the elongation (EL) to failure 6.5% is increased by 160% than the value of direct chill casting.

Abstract Background Vascular malformations are common but complicated types of disease in infants, with unclear causes and lack of effective prevention. The symptoms usually do not disappear and tend to progress without medical intervention. It is extremely necessary to choose correct treatment options for different types of vascular malformations. A large number of studies have confirmed that sclerotherapy has a tendency to become the first-line treatment in near future, but it is also associated with mild or severe complications. Furthermore, to our knowledge, the serious adverse event of progressive limb necrosis has not been systematically analyzed and reported in the literature. Case presentation Three cases (two females and one male) were presented who were all diagnosed as vascular malformations and were treated by several sessions of interventional sclerotherapy. Their previous medical records showed the use of several sclerosants in different sessions including Polidocanol and Bleomycin. The sign of limb necrosis did not occur during the first sclerotherapy, but after the second and third sessions. Furthermore, the short-term symptomatic treatment could improve the necrosis syndrome, but could not change the outcome of amputation. Conclusion Sclerotherapy undoubtedly tends to be the first-line treatment in near future, but the adverse reactions still remain major challenges. Awareness of progressive limb necrosis after sclerotherapy and timely management by experts in centers of experience of this complication can avoid amputation.

Abstract Background Mycoplasma hominis infection is common in urinary tract. 18F-FDG-PET/CT is a valuable tool for tumor and infection diagnosis. Few studies have shown the 18F-FDG-PET/CT images after mycoplasma infection. Case presentation Here we described a case of Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia with thickened bladder wall. The 18F-FDG-PET/CT showed the SUVmax up to 36.1 mimicking bladder cancer. The results of histopathological examination and metagenomic sequencing of the blood and urinary revealed the Mycoplasma hominis infection. Conclusion The full consideration should be given to the possibility of infection besides tumor in lesions with high SUV value in 18F-FDG-PET/CT, especially in immunodeficiency patients.

Abstract Background Lovastatin, an HMG-CoA inhibitor and an effective cholesterol lowering drug, exhibits anti-neoplastic activity towards several types of cancer, although the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood. Herein, we investigated mechanism of growth inhibition of leukemic cells by lovastatin. Methods RNAseq analysis was used to explore the effect of lovastatin on gene expression in leukemic cells. An animal model of leukemia was used to test the effect of this statin in vivo. FAM83A and DDIT4 expression was knocked-downed in leukemia cells via lentivirus-shRNA. Western blotting, RT-qPCR, cell cycle analysis and apoptosis assays were used to determine the effect of lovastatin-induced growth suppression in leukemic cells in vitro. Results Lovastatin treatment strongly inhibited cancer progression in a mouse model of erythroleukemia induced by Friend virus. In tissue culture, lovastatin inhibited cell proliferation through induction of G1 phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Interestingly, lovastatin induced most known genes associated with cholesterol biosynthesis in leukemic cells. Moreover, it suppressed ERK1/2 phosphorylation by downregulating FAM83A and DDIT4, two mediators of MAP-Kinase signaling. RNAseq analysis of lovastatin treated leukemic cells revealed a strong induction of the tumor suppressor gene KLF2. Accordingly, lentivirus-mediated knockdown of KLF2 antagonized leukemia cell suppression induced by lovastatin, associated with higher ERK1/2 phosphorylation compared to control. We further show that KLF2 induction by lovastatin is responsible for lower expression of the FAM83A and DDIT4 oncogenes, involved in the activation of ERK1/2. KLF2 activation by lovastatin also activated a subset of cholesterol biosynthesis genes that may further contribute to leukemia suppression. Conclusions These results implicate KLF2-mediated FAM83A/DDIT4/MAPK suppression and activation of cholesterol biosynthesis as the mechanism of leukemia cell growth inhibition by lovastatin.

The unprecedented public health and economic impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has been met with an equally unprecedented scientific response. Sensitive point-of-care methods to detect SARS-CoV-2 antigens in clinical specimens are urgently required for the rapid screening of individuals with viral infection. Here, we developed an upconversion nanoparticle-based lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (UCNP-LFIA) for the high-sensitivity detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein. A pair of rabbit SARS-CoV-2 N-specific monoclonal antibodies was conjugated to UCNPs, and the prepared UCNPs were then deposited into the LFIA test strips for detecting and capturing the N protein. Under the test conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) of UCNP-LFIA for the N protein was 3.59 pg/mL, with a linear range of 0.01–100 ng/mL. Compared with that of the current colloidal gold-based LFIA strips, the LOD of the UCNP-LFIA-based method was increased by 100-fold. The antigen recovery rate of the developed method in the simulated pharyngeal swab samples ranged from 91.1 to 117.3%. Furthermore, compared with the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, the developed UCNP-LFIA method showed a sensitivity of 94.73% for 19 patients with COVID-19. Thus, the newly established platform could serve as a promising and convenient fluorescent immunological sensing approach for the efficient screening and diagnosis of COVID-19.

BackgroundMany studies have confirmed that lipid accumulation products (LAP) predict arterial stiffness (AS) in hypertensive patients. But there is little research on the use of LAP in identifying early atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the LAP index and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) in Chinese patients with T2DM.MethodsA total of 1471 Chinese participants with T2DM, ranging in age from 18 to 80, were included in this cross-sectional study. BaPWV measurements were used to calculate the AS. A baPWV greater than the 75th percentile (1700 cm/s) was defined as indicating increased AS. The LAP index was calculated from the combination of waist circumference (WC) and triglycerides (TG).ResultsAccording to the quartiles of the LAP index, baPWV tended to increase after adjusting for sex and age. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the beta coefficient (β) of baPWV increased by 31.0 cm/s for each unit of lnLAP that was increased, and the 95% confidence interval (CI) was (6.5, 55.5) cm/s. In multivariate logistic regression analyses, after fully adjusting for confounders, the risk of elevated baPWV increased with each unit increase in lnLAP, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.3 (95% CI: 1.0, 1.8). According to the generalized additive model (GAM), we found that lnLAP was positively correlated with baPWV and baPWV elevation. The results were the same for males and females. Subgroup analyses showed that the positive correlation between lnLAP and elevated baPWV did not interact across all subgroups.ConclusionsIn Chinese patients with T2DM, LAP was strongly and positively correlated with baPWV and elevated baPWV.

Background The occurrence of prosthesis-related complications after total shoulder arthroplasty is devastating and costly. The purpose was to determine the incidence and risk of in-hospital prosthesis-related complications after total shoulder arthroplasty utilizing a large-scale sample database. Methods A retrospective database analysis was performed based on Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2010 to 2014. Patients who underwent total shoulder arthroplasty were included. Patient demographics, hospital characteristics, length of stay, economic indicators, in-hospital mortality, comorbidities, and peri-operative complications were evaluated. Results A total of 34,198 cases were capture from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database. There were 343 cases of in-hospital prosthesis-related complications after total shoulder arthroplasty and the overall incidence was 1%, with a more than 2.5-fold decrease from 2010 to 2014. Dislocation was the most common category among prosthesis-related complications (0.1%). The occurrence of in-hospital prosthesis-related complications was associated with significantly more total charges and slightly longer length of stay while less usage of Medicare. With the rapid progression of urbanization, cities are increasingly confronted with multifaceted challenges encompassing climate change, population expansion, and resource constraints. Consequently, fostering the development of resilient cities has emerged as a pivotal imperative within future territorial spatial planning. In this paper, we searched the Web of Science Core Collection database for data related to resilient cities in the perspective of territorial spatial planning from 2004 to 2022, and conducted a bibliometric analysis using the Bibliometrix R software package. The results show that: (1) From 2004 to 2022, the number of papers in the field of resilient cities research in the perspective of land spatial planning totaled 933, with a fluctuating upward trend of annual publications. The top three journals in terms of publication are Sustainability, Cities and Landscape and Urban Planning. (2) There are 2,651 researchers from 71 countries or regions contributing to the field,with the top three authors being SHARIFI A, BRUNETTA G, and BARTHEL S, but most of the authors (90.49%) have published only one paper. In addition, developed countries have strong research strength in this field. (3) The top ten keywords in the field of resilient cities research from the perspective of territorial spatial planning are Cities/City, Resilience, Management, Ecosystem services, Climate-change, Urban, Framework, Adaptation, Governance and Space. These keywords reflect the fact that topics related to resilience management and sustainable development of urban areas are hot topics in the field. Water, Health, Geography, Demand, Decision-Making and Built Environment are the research directions of resilient cities from the perspective of future territorial spatial planning.

Temperate forests are of pivotal importance in global carbon cycle, as they currently act as a carbon sink. Moreover, the continued expansion of the forest provides significant benefits in terms of mitigating climate change. Soil organic carbon (SOC) constitutes a vital component of the carbon inventory harbored within forest soils. Thus, understanding the dynamics and distribution of SOC in temperate forest soils can be essential to better predict the forest SOC inventories, and can help to provide theoretical basis for further studies in soil carbon management technologies. Spatial variability of SOC has been studied extensively, but the mechanism that regulates the vertical pattern of SOC is still not clear. In the present study, we hypothesized that the vertical pattern of SOC in temperate forest soils is dominated by the vertical transport of solute in soil, and a theoretical vertical scaling of SOC was proposed based on percolation theory. Theoretical range of SOC in the national forests in northeastern China and the United States were also predicted. The agreement between the observed SOC profiles and the theoretical scaling supported the hypothesis and suggested that percolation theory can be applied to depict the vertical distribution of SOC, while the application could be limited if vegetation cover and soil texture alter the dominant controlling factor of SOC distribution. The concordance between empirical data and the predicted range also showed significant potential of integrating percolation theory into comprehensive models for carbon stock estimation.

IntroductionIschemic stroke patients commonly experience disorder of consciousness (DOC), leading to poorer discharge outcomes and higher mortality risks. Therefore, the identification of applicable electrophysiological biomarkers is crucial for the rapid diagnosis and evaluation of post-stroke disorder of consciousness (PS-DOC), while providing supportive evidence for cerebral neurology.MethodsIn our study, we conduct microstate analysis on resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) of 28 post-stroke patients with awake consciousness and 28 patients with PS-DOC, calculating the temporal features of microstates. Furthermore, we extract the Lempel-Ziv complexity of microstate sequences and the delta/alpha power ratio of EEG on spectral. Statistical analysis is performed to examine the distinctions in features between the two groups, followed by inputting the distinctive features into a support vector machine for the classification of PS-DOC.ResultsBoth groups obtain four optimal topographies of EEG microstates, but notable distinctions are observed in microstate C. Within the PS-DOC group, there is a significant increase in the mean duration and coverage of microstates B and C, whereas microstate D displays a contrasting trend. Additionally, noteworthy variations are found in the delta/alpha ratio and Lempel-Ziv complexity between the two groups. The integration of the delta/alpha ratio with microstates’ temporal and Lempel-Ziv complexity features demonstrates the highest performance in the classifier (Accuracy = 91.07%).DiscussionOur results suggest that EEG microstates can provide insights into the abnormal brain network dynamics in DOC patients post-stroke. Integrating the temporal and Lempel-Ziv complexity microstate features with spectral features offers a deeper understanding of the neuro mechanisms underlying brain damage in patients with DOC, holding promise as effective electrophysiological biomarkers for diagnosing PS-DOC.

The innovative development of green technology is the permanent scientific research topic in the field of grain storage, and the controlled atmosphere is one of the green grain storage technologies. This paper carried out the research on the storage technology of high-quality indica rice in the fifth ecological area of grain storage (medium temperature and high humidity) by air-regulating agent. The concentration of oxygen, temperature and relative humidity of the storage environment were monitored, and the quality of high-quality indica rice was also evaluated. The results showed that the technology of air-regulating could effectively delay the quality deterioration of rice. Compared with the controlled group, the experiment group can maintain the concentration of oxygen in the confined space below 0.1% and the relative humidity at 70% during the 5-month storage period. The moisture content of the controlled atmosphere group was 0.98% higher than that of the controlled group. The fatty acid value was 1.34 mg (KOH)/100 g lower than that of the controlled group, while the freshness was 7 points higher than that of the controlled group. The above results showed that the air-regulating agent can adjust and control the oxygen concentration and relative humidity in the confined space according to the demand, which could achieve the purpose of preserving the quality and freshness of grain. It is a green, low-carbon and fresh-reserving new grain storage technology.
