The movement of glaciers plays a crucial role in environmental and geological processes, significantly influencing the formation and dynamics of ice bodies. This study leverages feature tracking technology to analyze optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing imagery, specifically GF-1 optical images and GF-3, Sentinel-1 SAR images, captured during the 2020 to 2021 ablation season in Gongar. The aim was to quantify glacier surface velocities and to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of different remote sensing modalities in capturing these dynamics. Our findings indicate a strong consistency in the spatial distribution of glacier surface velocities derived from diverse remote sensing data sources, with high-precision optical imagery (GF-1) yielding the most accurate velocity measurements, followed by Sentinel-1 SAR data. Notably, large glaciers in Gongar exhibited rapid movements, with an average velocity of 0.16 m/d, primarily at elevations between 4,500 and 6,500 m. The fastest velocities were recorded at approximately 4,500 m elevation. Glaciers with inclines ranging from 10° to 60° displayed the highest velocities within the 20°–30° slope range. It was observed that glaciers on the southeast slope moved faster, exhibiting the highest average surface velocity, in contrast to those on the west slope, which moved more slowly. The surface velocity of the ice tongue region of Krayaylak Glacier that the largest glacier in Pamir, was observed to be lower than 0.6 m/d, indicating a slow movement speed. The study also reveals that the effectiveness of different remote sensing data in detecting glacier velocity in Gongar, with high-resolution data more accurately capturing surface velocities in melting areas or those with slower movement. This study underscores the importance of multi-source remote sensing data in understanding glacier dynamics and contributes valuable insights into the mechanisms driving glacier movements.

Abstract The specific genetic subtypes that gliomas exhibit result in variable clinical courses and the need to involve multidisciplinary teams of neurologists, epileptologists, neurooncologists and neurosurgeons. Currently, the diagnosis of gliomas pivots mainly around the preliminary radiological findings and the subsequent definitive surgical diagnosis (via surgical sampling). Radiomics and radiogenomics present a potential to precisely diagnose and predict survival and treatment responses, via morphological, textural, and functional features derived from MRI data, as well as genomic data. In spite of their advantages, it is still lacking standardized processes of feature extraction and analysis methodology among different research groups, which have made external validations infeasible. Radiomics and radiogenomics can be used to better understand the genomic basis of gliomas, such as tumor spatial heterogeneity, treatment response, molecular classifications and tumor microenvironment immune infiltration. These novel techniques have also been used to predict histological features, grade or even overall survival in gliomas. In this review, workflows of radiomics and radiogenomics are elucidated, with recent research on machine learning or artificial intelligence in glioma.

Abstract Background Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) and meningiomas (MA) have similar clinical and radiographic presentations but require different treatment approaches and have different prognoses. This emphasizes the importance of a correct preoperative diagnosis of SFT versus MA. Objective In this study, investigated the differences in imaging characteristics between SFT and MA to improve the accuracy of preoperative imaging diagnosis of SFT. Methods The clinical and imaging data of 26 patients with SFT and 104 patients with MA who were pathologically diagnosed between August 2017 and December 2022, were retrospectively analyzed. The clinical and imaging differences between SFT and MA, as well as between the various pathological grades of SFT, were analyzed. Results Age, gender, cystic change, flow void phenomenon, yin-yang sign, lobulation, narrow base, tumor/cortex signal ratio (TCSR) > 1.0 in T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), TCSR ≥ 1.1 in T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), peritumoral edema, and absence of dural tail sign varied between SFT and MA. As per the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, TCSR > 1 in T1WI has the maximum diagnostic accuracy for SFT. Cranial or venous sinus invasion had a positive effect on SFT (Grade III, World Health Organization (WHO) grading). Conclusion Among the many radiological and clinical distinctions between SFT and MA, TCSR ≥ 1 exhibits the highest predictive efficacy for SFT; while cranial or venous sinus invasion may be a predictor of WHO grade III SFT.

Abstract In the livestock production system, the evolution of porcine gut microecology is consistent with the idea of “The Hygiene Hypothesis” in humans. I.e., improved hygiene conditions, reduced exposure to environmental microorganisms in early life, and frequent use of antimicrobial drugs drive immune dysregulation. Meanwhile, the overuse of antibiotics as feed additives for infectious disease prevention and animal growth induces antimicrobial resistance genes in pathogens and spreads related environmental pollutants. It justifies our attempt to review alternatives to antibiotics that can support optimal growth and improve the immunophysiological state of pigs. In the current review, we first described porcine mucosal immunity, followed by discussions of gut microbiota dynamics during the critical weaning period and the impacts brought by antibiotics usage. Evidence of in-feed additives with immuno-modulatory properties highlighting probiotics, prebiotics, and phytobiotics and their cellular and molecular networking are summarized and reviewed. It may provide insights into the immune regulatory mechanisms of antibiotic alternatives and open new avenues for health management in pig production.

Background: Iodine deficiency is a well-established cause of goiter, while the impact of lifestyle factors on goiter development remains underexplored. The study aims to explore the associations between iodine status, lifestyle factors, and the prevalence of goiter among children and adolescents in Zhejiang Province, China. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2022 using a stratified multistage sampling, involving 2261 children aged 6–17. Among these 1562 participants underwent both urinalysis and thyroid ultrasound. Lifestyle factors were assessed through self-reported questionnaires. Results: The prevalence of goiter in the study population was 10.8%. A high urinary iodine concentration (UIC) (>300 μg/L) was significantly associated with a decreased risk of goiter (OR = 0.49, 95%CI: 0.27–0.88). Excessive recreational screen time and a high frequency of dining out were associated with an increased Tvol, while adequate physical activity and sleep were inversely associated with goiter risk, while the combined effect of high UIC and healthy lifestyle showed a protective effect against goiter. Conclusion: Ensuring adequate iodine status and promoting healthy lifestyles are crucial for preventing goiter and enhancing thyroid health in children and adolescents, suggesting that public health strategies should integrate nutritional and lifestyle interventions.

Background: This study evaluates the association between vitamin A levels, AIP (the atherogenic index of plasma), and subclinical hypothyroidism. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted involving a representative sample of 3530 Chinese adults. Linear and logistic regression models were utilized to evaluate the associations between AIP and subclinical hypothyroidism, stratified by vitamin A levels. These analyses were further differentiated by sex and age groups to identify any demographic-specific associations. Results: In the vitamin A-sufficient group, an increase in AIP was associated with elevated total triiodothyronine (TT3) levels (β = 0.26, 95%CI: 0.09, 0.41, p = 0.003). Conversely, in the group with severe vitamin A deficiency, higher AIP levels were linked to increased free triiodothyronine (fT3) and TT3 levels and decreased free thyroxine (fT4) levels (β = 0.12, 0.03, and −0.29, respectively). Additionally, severe vitamin A deficiency increased the risk associated with AIP and subclinical hypothyroidism (OR = 1.66, 95%CI: 1.07, 2.58, p = 0.025). This risk was notably more pronounced in women and older adults, with odds ratios of 2.44 (95%CI: 1.55, 3.86, p < 0.001) and 2.14 (95%CI: 1.36, 3.38, p = 0.001), respectively. Conclusions: Vitamin A deficiency may increase the risk of the association between AIP and subclinical hypothyroidism, particularly among women and the elderly.

Abstract Liver fibrosis is a key step in the progression of various chronic liver diseases to liver cirrhosis and even liver cancer, it is also an important link affecting prognosis. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of anthocyanins on liver fibrosis and the molecular mechanism of mmu_circ_0000623 in anthocyanin therapy. In this study, CCL4 was used to build a mouse liver fibrosis model, and the treatment groups were treated with 100 and 200 mg/kg of anthocyanins daily by gavage. Liver fibrosis indicators, macrophage polarization markers, and liver injury markers were further detected by real‐time quantitative PCR (qRT‐PCR), western blotting (WB), and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Morphological verification of liver injury in different treatment groups was performed by histopathological method. A mouse hepatic stellate cell (HSC) model and a mouse liver fibrosis model were constructed to verify the expression of circ_0000623, miR‐351‐5p, and TFEB. Transfected with mRFP‐GFP‐LC3 to detect the autophagic flux of HSCs. We found that 100 mg/kg or 200 mg/kg of anthocyanins could significantly reduce the degree of liver fibrosis in mice. In addition, anthocyanins can inhibit the proliferation, activation, and migration ability of HSCs. circ_0000623 was lowly expressed in mice with liver fibrosis, and anthocyanin treatment could promote its increased expression. Further testing found that anthocyanins could reverse the blocked autophagic flux induced by PDGF or CCL4. This effect is achieved by regulating the expression of TFEB by competitive adsorption of miR‐351‐5p. Anthocyanins could treat liver fibrosis by modulating circ_0000623/miR‐351‐5p/TFEB‐mediated changes in HSC autophagic flux.

In our previous microbiome profiling analysis, Lactobacillus (L.) johnsonii was suggested to contribute to resistance against chronic heat stress-induced diarrhea in weaned piglets. Forty-nine L. johnsonii strains were isolated from these heat stress-resistant piglets, and their probiotic properties were assessed. Strains N5 and N7 exhibited a high survival rate in acidic and bile environments, along with an antagonistic effect against Salmonella. To identify genes potentially involved in these observed probiotic properties, the complete genome sequences of N5 and N7 were determined using a combination of Illumina and nanopore sequencing. The genomes of strains N5 and N7 were found to be highly conserved, with two N5-specific and four N7-specific genes identified. Multiple genes involved in gastrointestinal environment adaptation and probiotic properties, including acidic and bile stress tolerance, anti-inflammation, CAZymes, and utilization and biosynthesis of carbohydrate compounds, were identified in both genomes. Comparative genome analysis of the two genomes and 17 available complete L. johnsonii genomes revealed 101 genes specifically harbored by strains N5 and N7, several of which were implicated in potential probiotic properties. Overall, this study provides novel insights into the genetic basis of niche adaptation and probiotic properties, as well as the genome diversity of L. johnsonii.

The Tarim River Basin, China’s largest inland river basin, is renowned for its ecological fragility characterized by concurrent greening and desertification processes. Soil wind erosion emerges as a critical factor impacting the natural ecosystem of this region. This study employs a soil wind erosion model tailored to cultivated land, grassland, and desert terrains to analyze the multitemporal characteristics of and spatial variations in soil wind erosion across nine subbasins within the Tarim River Basin, utilizing observed data from 2010, 2015, and 2018. Additionally, this study investigates the influence of various factors, particularly wind speed, on the soil wind erosion dynamics. Following established standards of soil erosion classification, the intensity levels of soil erosion are assessed for each calculation grid within the study area alongside an analysis of the environmental factors influencing soil erosion. Findings indicate that approximately 38.79% of the total study area experiences soil wind erosion, with the Qarqan River Basin exhibiting the highest erosion modulus and the Aksu River Basin registering the lowest. Light and moderate erosion predominates in the Tarim River Basin, with an overall decreasing trend observed over the study period. Notably, the Qiemo River Basin, Dina River Basin, and Kaidu Kongque River Basin display relatively higher proportions of eroded area compared to their total subbasin area. Furthermore, this study underscores the substantial influence of the annual average wind speed on soil erosion within the study area, advocating for prioritizing soil and water conservation programs, particularly in the downstream regions of the Tarim River Basin, to mitigate future environmental degradation.

Abstract The study is to evaluate the performance of ocular biometric measures and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) for detecting myopia among Chinese students. Among 5- to 18-year-old Chinese students from two cities of China, trained eye-care professionals performed assessment of ocular biometrics (axial length (AL), corneal curvature radius (CR), anterior chamber depth) under noncycloplegic conditions using NIDEK Optical Biometer AL-Scan, distance visual acuity using retro-illuminated logMAR chart with tumbling-E optotypes, and cycloplegic refractive error using NIDEK autorefractor with administration of 0.5% tropicamide. Spherical equivalent (SER) in diopters (D) was calculated as sphere plus half cylinder, and myopia was defined as SER ≤ − 0.5 D. Performances of ocular biometrics and UCVA (individually and in combination) for detecting myopia were evaluated using sensitivity and specificity, predictive values, and area under ROC curve (AUC) in both development dataset and validation dataset. Among 3436 students (mean age 9.7 years, 51% female), the mean (SD) cycloplegic SER was − 0.20 (2.18) D, and 1269 (36.9%) had myopia. Cycloplegic SER was significantly correlated with AL (Pearson Correlation coefficient r = − 0.82), AL/CR ratio (r = − 0.90), and UCVA (r = 0.79), but was not correlated with CR (r = 0.02, p = 0.15). The AL/CR ratio detected myopia with AUC 0.963 (95% CI 0.957–0.969) and combination with UCVA improved the AUC to 0.976 (95% CI 0.971–0.981). Using age-specific AL/CR cutoff (> 3.00 for age 3.06 for 10–14 years, > 3.08 for ≥ 15 years) as myopia positive, the sensitivity and specificity were 87.0% (95% CI 84.4–89.6%) and 87.8% (86.0–89.6%), respectively, in the development dataset and 86.4% (95% CI 83.7–89.1%) and 89.4% (95% CI 87.3–91.4%), respectively, in the validation dataset. BackgroundIn recent years, red cell distribution width (RDW) has been found to be associated with the prognosis of patients with heart failure (HF) in Western countries. However, evidence from Asia is limited. We aimed to investigate the relationship between RDW and the risk of 3-month readmission in hospitalized Chinese HF patients.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed HF data from the Fourth Hospital of Zigong, Sichuan, China, involving 1,978 patients admitted for HF between December 2016 and June 2019. The independent variable in our study was RDW, and the endpoint was the risk of readmission within 3 months. This study mainly used a multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Smoothed curve fitting was then used to assess the dose-response relationship between RDW and the risk of 3-month readmission.ResultsIn the original cohort of 1,978 patients with HF (42% male and 73.1% aged ≥70 years), 495 patients (25.0%) were readmitted within 3 months after discharge. Smoothed curve fitting showed a linear correlation between RDW and the risk of readmission within 3 months. In the multivariable-adjusted model, every 1% increase in RDW was associated with a 9% increased risk of readmission within 3 months (hazard ratio = 1.09, 95% confidence interval: 1.00–1.15; P

Background and purposeThere was little evidence to study the relationship between hypocalcemia and mortality among critically ill patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) aged ≥16 years. This study aimed to determine the potential association between hypocalcemia and in-hospital and ICU mortality in patients with ICH in the United States.MethodsWe analyzed 1,954 patients with ICH from the e-Intensive Care Unit Collaborative Research Database and divided them into hypocalcemia and non-hypocalcemia groups. Hypocalcemia was defined as albumin-adjusted total calcium below 8.4 mg/dl. The primary and secondary outcomes were hospital and ICU mortality, respectively. We performed multivariable regression and subgroup analyses to evaluate the association of hypocalcemia with hospital and ICU mortality. Cumulative survival rate analysis was performed using Kaplan–Meier curves with log-rank statistics.ResultsWe enrolled 1,954 patients with ICH who had been hospitalized in ICU for >24 h and were older than 16 years (average age, 61.8 years; men, 56.7%). We noted that 373 (19%) hospital mortality occurred, including 235 (12%) ICU mortality. In this sample, 195 patients had hypocalcemia. Multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that hypocalcemia was associated with a 67% increased risk of in-hospital and a 72% increased risk of ICU mortality. This association was consistent across subgroup analyses.ConclusionsHypocalcemia was associated with a high risk of hospital and ICU mortality among critically ill patients with ICH. Future prospective, randomized, controlled studies are needed to confirm our results.

ObjectiveWhen the lesions in the sellar region are large, they can involve both the inside and outside the sella, which brings challenges to the differential diagnosis of pituitary macroadenoma and lesions other than macroadenoma. Therefore, this study explored the diagnostic value of an ectopic posterior pituitary hyperintense signal (EPPHS) in pituitary macroadenoma and its possible causes.MethodsThe clinical and imaging data of 131 patients with sellar tumors or tumor-like lesions involving both intrasellar and extrasellar regions in the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University from February 2011 to December 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The diagnostic value of EPPHS in pituitary macroadenoma was analyzed. The differences in clinical and imaging indexes between the EPPHS-positive group and the EPPHS-negative group were compared.ResultsThese 131 cases of sellar tumors or tumor-like lesions involving both intrasellar and extrasellar regions included 91 cases of pituitary macroadenoma and 40 cases of lesions other than macroadenoma. The receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis suggested that EPPHS had a diagnostic value in diagnosing pituitary macroadenoma [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.857, P = 0.0001]. Compared with the EPPHS negative group, the median prolactin level in the EPPHS positive group was significantly higher (P < 0.05). Through ROC curve analysis, prolactin value was found to be of diagnostic value for EPPHS (AUC = 0.612, P = 0.0312).ConclusionIn sellar tumors or tumor-like lesions involving both intrasellar and extrasellar regions, the appearance of EPPHS is helpful in the diagnosis of pituitary macroadenoma. The formation of EPPHS may be related to injuries to the pituitary stalk.

ObjectiveEarly detection of scoliosis is of great significance to patients with scoliosis and the whole society. This paper aims to learn the prevalence of scoliosis screening positive among students in primary and secondary schools and to explore the influencing factors.MethodsIn 2019, a stratified cluster sampling technique was employed in this school-based cross-sectional study. The sampling covers all prefecture-level cities in Zhejiang Province. Based on the whole class, at least 80 students in each grade of primary school, junior high school, and senior high school were selected. Physical examination and scoliosis screening were performed in the school-based investigation. The distribution of demographic characteristics and nutritional status of children and adolescents with scoliosis screening positive were explored.ResultsA total of 45,547 students were screened. The overall prevalence of children and adolescents with scoliosis screening positive were 3.9%. Higher prevalence of scoliosis screening positive was found in students living in urban area (4.1%), women students (4.1%), students with low weight (5.3%) (p < 0.05), and the prevalence increased with age (p < 0.05). In logistic analysis, we found age (OR = 1.145; 95% Cis: 1.128, 1.162), gender (OR = 1.118; 95% Cis: 1.016, 1.230) and low weight (OR = 1.48; 95% Cis: 1.25, 1.751) were the influencing factors for prevalence of scoliosis screening positive (p < 0.05).ConclusionsThere were no disparities between living areas, but there was a significant difference between genders, among different ages, and among different nutritional statuses of children and adolescents with or without scoliosis screening positive. In multi-analysis, age, gender, and low weight were the influencing factors for the prevalence of scoliosis screening positive. Age and gender-specific scoliosis screening strategies and nutritional public health policies for children and adolescents are needed.

AimsEvidence of a link between total calcium (CA) and serum uric acid (SUA) is absent in adolescents. Thus, this study aimed to determine the relationship between total CA levels and SUA levels in United States adolescents.MethodsA cross-sectional study analyzed a sample composed of 8,309 United States adolescents aged 12–19 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database (1999–2006 survey cycle). Multivariable linear regression analyses and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to assess the correlation of total CA with SUA levels and hyperuricemia. Furthermore, the dose-response relationship of total CA and SUA levels was analyzed using smooth curve fitting (penalized spline method).ResultsAccording to multivariable linear regression analysis, every 1 mg/dL increase in total CA level is associated with a 0.33 mg/dL (β = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.27–0.40, p < 0.001) increase in SUA. Multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that every 0.1 mg/dL increase in total CA level is linked with an 8% increased risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.06–1.10, p < 0.001). The analyses of smooth curve fitting revealed that total CA levels were linearly correlated with SUA levels (Pnon–linearity = 0.152). The results were highly stable in all subgroups. The interaction analysis results presented that race/ethnicity had an interactive role in associating total CA with SUA levels.ConclusionsIn United States adolescents, total CA levels were linearly and positively correlated with SUA levels.

Based on the structural shortage of an agricultural labor force and the continuous increase in tomato planting scale in China, as well as the limitation of a greenhouse working environment on the development of tomato picking productivity, a motor-driven end-effector for a tomato picking robot based on a hybrid force/position control strategy was designed. First, a hybrid force/position control strategy was applied to control the picking process. Consistent with this strategy, the mechanical structure design of the end-effector was determined. The maximum torque of the finger joint motor was verified by applying a load to the end-effector fingertip under a parabolic linear angular velocity. Second, the D-H method was used to establish the end-effector single-finger and whole-hand coordinate systems and to perform forward and inverse kinematic analysis. The Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the workspace of the end-effector, and an isochronous interpolation algorithm was used to analyze the angular displacement of the motor. A basic algorithm for starting, stopping and accelerating the finger joints was designed to achieve the smooth movement of the end-effector. The control system for the end-effector was designed based on STM32F103ZET6, and the end-effector remote wireless debugging system was designed based on Tiny6410. Finally, a test prototype of the tomato picking end-effector was manufactured and picking tests were conducted, which showed that our tomato picking end-effector moved smoothly. The proposed control algorithm reduced the impact force and recorded the contact force between the end-effector and the tomato in real time, and the end-effector essentially achieved nondestructive picking. Therefore, our tomato picking end-effector demonstrated good utility in practice.

Defects in gut barrier function are implicated in gastrointestinal (GI) disorders like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as well as in systemic inflammation. With the increasing incidence of IBD worldwide, more attention should be paid to dietary interventions and therapeutics with the potential to boost the natural defense mechanisms of gut epithelial cells. The current study aimed to investigate the protective effects of Limosilactobacillus reuteri ATCC PTA 4659 in a colitis mouse model and delineate the mechanisms behind it. Wild-type mice were allocated to the control group; or given 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water for 7 days to induce colitis; or administered L. reuteri for 7 days as pretreatment; or for 14 days starting 7 days before subjecting to the DSS. Peroral treatment with L. reuteri improved colitis severity clinically and morphologically and reduced the colonic levels of Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) (Tnf), Interleukin 1-β (Il1β), and nterferon-γ (Ifng), the crucial pro-inflammatory cytokines in colitis onset. It also prevented the CD11b+Ly6G+ neutrophil recruitment and the skewed immune responses in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) of CD11b+CD11c+ dendritic cell (DC) expansion and Foxp3+CD4+ T-cell reduction. Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and RT-qPCR, we demonstrated a colitis-driven bacterial translocation to MLNs and gut microbiota dysbiosis that were in part counterbalanced by L. reuteri treatment. Moreover, the expression of barrier-preserving tight junction (TJ) proteins and cytoprotective heat shock protein (HSP) 70 and HSP25 was reduced by colitis but boosted by L. reuteri treatment. A shift in expression pattern was also observed with HSP70 in response to the pretreatment and with HSP25 in response to L. reuteri-DSS. In addition, the changes of HSPs were found to be correlated to bacterial load and epithelial cell proliferation. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that the human-derived L. reuteri strain 4659 confers protection in experimental colitis in young mice, while intestinal HSPs may mediate the probiotic effects by providing a supportive protein–protein network for the epithelium in health and colitis.

Abstract Background Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection can significantly complicate and worsen the condition of acute severe ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. We aimed to explore the predictive risk factors to prevent and identify CMV infection at an early stage in acute UC patients. Methods A total of 115 moderate-to-severe active UC patients from 17 hospitals throughout China were enrolled. Active CMV infection was diagnosed by one of the following: CMV pp65 antigens, CMV IgM antibodies or CMV DNA. We identified the independent risk factors by multivariate analyses. This study is to investigate the prevalence, type, severity, and associated risk factors of astigmatism in school students in eastern China. Method In this cross-sectional school-based study, students underwent refraction using NIDEK non-cycloplegic autorefractor. Abstract Background Prevention of myopia has become a public health priority in China. This study is to investigate the prevalence of myopia and vision impairment, and their associated factors in school students in eastern China. Method In this cross-sectional school-based study of 4801 students from 16 schools ranging from kindergarten to high school, students underwent refraction using non-cycloplegic autorefractor and visual acuity testing using logMAR chart with tumbling E. Myopia was defined as spherical equivalent (SPHE) ≤ − 0.5 diopter (D) and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) 20/25 or worse. High myopia was defined as SPHE ≤ − 6.0 D and UCVA 20/25 or worse. Vision impairment was defined as UCVA 20/40 or worse. Logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with myopia and vision impairment. Results Among 4801 children (55% male) with mean age (standard deviation) 12.3 (3.8) years, 3030 (63.1, 95% CI: 61.7–64.5%) had myopia, 452 (9.4, 95% CI: 8.6–10.3%) had high myopia, and 2644 (55.1, 95% CI, 53.7–56.5%) had vision impairment. The prevalence rate of myopia increased with grade in a non-linear manner, 12% in kindergarten, 32% in grade 2, 69% in grade 5, and approximately 90% by grade 10 or above. Abstract Crispness is regarded as a significant quality index for apples. Currently, destructive sensory evaluation is the accepted method used to detect apple crispness, making it essential to develop a method that can detect apple crispness in a nondestructive manner. In this study, spectroscopy was proposed as the nondestructive technique for detecting apples' crispness, ultimately obtaining a spectral reflectance curve between 450 nm and 1,000 nm. In order to simplify and improve modeling efficiency, successive projections algorithm (SPA) and x‐loading weights (x‐LW) methods were used to select the most effective wavelengths. Partial least squares (PLS) algorithm, radial basis neural networks (RBNN), and multilayer perceptron neural networks (MLPNN) methods were used to establish the models and to predict the crispness of “Fuji” and “Qinguan” apple varieties. Based on the full wavelength (FW), the prediction accuracy of the PLS model for “Fuji” and “Qinguan” apple varieties was 92.05% and 95.87%, respectively. The effective wavelengths selected via SPA for the “Fuji” apple variety were 450.41 nm, 476.80 nm, 677.75 nm, and 750.72 nm, and the effective wavelengths selected via x‐LW for the “Qinguan” apple variety were 542.51 nm, 544.79 nm, 676.96 nm, and 718.29 nm. The prediction accuracy of the PLS model based on effective wavelengths for “Fuji” and “Qinguan” apple varieties reached 91.31% and 96.41%, respectively. Compared with the RBNN model, the MLPNN model achieved better prediction results for both “Fuji” and “Qinguan” apples, with the prediction accuracy reaching 97.8% and 99.9%, respectively. Based on the above findings, effective wavelength selection and MLPNN modeling were able to detect apple crispness with the highest accuracy. Overall, it can be concluded that the less effective wavelengths are conducive to developing an instrument for crispness detection.

Objectives: To assess the relationship between modifiable lifestyle factors and risk of overweight/obesity in Chinese students, and to evaluate the predicting prevalence of overweight if the lifestyle risk factors were removed.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 40,141 students in grade three and above (8–24yrs) in 2019 in Zhejiang Province, China. Physical examination was performed, and a self-administered questionnaire was used to collect lifestyle information, including dietary behavior, physical activity, TV watching, sleeping, smoking, drinking, and tooth-brushing habits. Logistic regression models were performed to assess the relationship between overweight/obesity and a series of lifestyle factors. Population attributable fractions (PAFs) were used to calculate the predicting prevalence of overweight/obesity if lifestyle risk factors were removed.Results: The prevalence of overweight/obesity of participants was 25.5% (male 32.3%, female 18.1%). Overweight/obesity were associated with adverse lifestyle factors, such as watch TV ≥1 h/day (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.11–1.22), insufficient sleep (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.11–1.22), and irregular toothbrushing habits (OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.01–1.39). Based on the calculated PAFs, the predicted prevalence of overweight/obesity would decline moderately if lifestyle factors were modified, with the magnitudes of decrease vary by sex, age and residence. Generally, a larger reduction was estimated if the sleeping time was increased and TV time was reduced, with the prevalence of overweight/obesity decreased by 1.1% (95% CI: 0.7, 1.5%) and 0.9% (95% CI: 0.6, 1.2%), respectively.Conclusions: Predicted prevalence of overweight/ obesity in Chinese students may decrease if modifiable lifestyle risk factors were removed. The attributable risk for obesity of lifestyle behaviors varied in age, sex and residence groups. The findings of this study may provide insights for planning and optimizing future obesity intervention endeavors.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a secondary metabolite of fungi. Ingestion of feed containing DON causes severe intestinal damage in humans and animals, possibly due to cholesterol-enriched lipid raft abnormalities. Cholic acid (CA) and lithocholic acid (LCA) are metabolites of cholesterol transformation, which have been proven to benefit epithelial cell proliferation and reduce intestinal inflammation and lesions. Therefore, we aimed to study the protective roles of CA and LCA administration on the DON-exposed intestinal epithelial cells (IPI-2I) and the underlying mechanisms involved in cholesterol metabolism. We found that LCA pretreatment, but not CA, alleviated the reduction of cell numbers caused by DON exposure. Furthermore, we demonstrate that LCA restored the DON-induced cell apoptosis by reducing the cleaved caspase 3 and cleaved PARP-1 expression. DON-increased cellular cholesterol and bile acid contents were significantly reduced when LCA was co-treated. Further transcriptomic analysis revealed that the aberrant cholesterol homeostasis genes profile was observed in the cells exposed to DON or pretreated with LCA. We also validated that the key genes involved in cholesterol biosynthesis and transformation (cholesterol to bile acids) were strongly inhibited by the LCA treatment in the DON-exposed cells. Together, this study demonstrated that LCA ameliorated DON-caused toxic apoptosis in IPI-2I cells by maintaining cholesterol metabolism. We suggest that as an endogenous metabolite, LCA may be used as a therapeutic and/or integrated into a dietary intervention against mycotoxin toxicity.

(1) Background: Changes in the expression of aquaporins (AQPs) in the intestine are proved to be associated with the attenuation of diarrhea. Diarrhea is a severe problem for postweaning piglets. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether niacin could alleviate diarrhea in weaned piglets by regulating AQPs expression and the underlying mechanisms; (2) Methods: 72 weaned piglets (Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire), 21 d old, 6.60 ± 0.05 kg) were randomly allotted into 3 groups for a 14-day feeding trial. Each treatment group included 6 replicate pens and each pen included 4 barrows (n = 24/treatment). Piglets were fed a basal diet (CON), a basal diet supplemented with 20.4 mg niacin/kg diet (NA) or the basal diet administered an antagonist for the GPR109A receptor (MPN). Additionally, an established porcine intestinal epithelial cell line (IPEC-J2) was used to investigate the protective effects and underlying mechanism of niacin on AQPs expression after Escherichia coli K88 (ETEC K88) treatment; (3) Results: Piglets fed niacin-supplemented diet had significantly decreased diarrhea rate, and increased mRNA and protein level of ZO-1, AQP 1 and AQP 3 in the colon compared with those administered a fed diet supplemented with an antagonist (p < 0.05). In addition, ETEC K88 treatment significantly reduced the cell viability, cell migration, and mRNA and protein expression of AQP1, AQP3, AQP7, AQP9, AQP11, and GPR109A in IPEC-J2 cells (p < 0.05). However, supplementation with niacin significantly prevented the ETEC K88-induced decline in the cell viability, cell migration, and the expression level of AQPs mRNA and protein in IPEC-J2 cells (p < 0.05). Furthermore, siRNA GPR109A knockdown significantly abrogated the protective effect of niacin on ETEC K88-induced cell damage (p < 0.05); (4) Conclusions: Niacin supplementation increased AQPs and ZO-1 expression to reduce diarrhea and intestinal damage through GPR109A pathway in weaned piglets.

Background A key step in embryo implantation is the adhesion to and invasion of the endometrium by the blastocyst trophectoderm. The envelope proteins of HERV-W and -FRD (human endogenous retrovirus-W and -FRD), syncytin-1 and syncytin-2, are mainly distributed in the placenta, and play important roles in the development of the placenta. The placenta originates from the trophectoderm of the blastocyst. It is unclear whether the envelope proteins of HERV-W and -FRD have an effect on the development of the trophectoderm and whether they have any association with the implantation of the blastocyst. Methods The whole-genome amplification products of the human blastocyst trophectoderm were used to measure the copy number of syncytin-1 and syncytin-2 using real time qPCR. In addition, clinical data associated with the outcome of pregnancies was collected, and included age, body mass index (BMI), basic follicle stimulating hormone(bFSH), rate of primary infertility and oligo-astheno-teratospermia, the thickness of the endometrium on the day of endometrial transformation, the levels of estrogen and progestin on the transfer day, the days and the morphological scores of the blastocysts. This paper provides a novel and effective compensation method by improving the hardware design and software algorithm to achieve optimization of piezoresistive pressure sensors and corresponding measurement systems in order to measure pressure more accurately and stably, as well as to meet the application requirements of the meteorological industry. Specifically, GE NovaSensor MEMS piezoresistive pressure sensors within a thousandth of accuracy are selected to constitute an array. In the versatile compensation method, the hardware utilizes the array of MEMS pressure sensors to reduce random error caused by sensor creep, and the software adopts the data fusion technique based on the wavelet neural network (WNN) which is improved by genetic algorithm (GA) to analyze the data of sensors for the sake of obtaining accurate and complete information over the wide temperature and pressure ranges. The GA-WNN model is implemented in hardware by using the 32-bit STMicroelectronics (STM32) microcontroller combined with an embedded real-time operating system µC/OS-II to make the output of the array of MEMS sensors be a direct digital readout. The results of calibration and test experiments clearly show that the GA-WNN technique can be effectively applied to minimize the sensor errors due to the temperature drift, the hysteresis effect and the long-term drift because of aging and environmental changes. The maximum error of the low cost piezoresistive MEMS-array pressure transmitter proposed by us is within 0.04% of its full-scale value, and it can satisfy the meteorological pressure measurement.

BACKGROUND: HOTAIR, a newly discovered long intergenic noncoding RNA (lincRNA), has been reported to be aberrantly expressed in many types of cancers. This meta-analysis summarizes its potential role as a biomarker in malignancy. METHODS: A quantitative meta-analysis was performed through a systematic search in Pubmed, Medline and Web of Science for eligible papers on the prognostic impact of HOTAIR in cancer from inception to Feb. 28, 2014. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated to summarize the effect. RESULTS: Nineteen studies were included in the study, with a total of 2033 patients. A significant association was observed between high HOTAIR expression and poor overall survival (OS) in patients with cancer (pooled HR 2.22, 95% CI: 1.68-2.93). Place of residence (Asian or Western countries), type of cancer (digestive or non-digestive disease), sample size (more or less than 100), and paper quality (score more or less than 85%) did not alter the significant predictive value of HOTAIR in OS from various kinds of cancer but preoperative status did. By combining HRs from Cox multivariate analyses, we found that HOTAIR expression was an independent prognostic factor for cancer patients (pooled HR 2.26, 95% CI: 1.62-3.15). Subgroup analysis showed that HOTAIR abundance was an independent prognostic factor for cancer metastasis (HR 3.90, 95% CI: 2.25-6.74). For esophageal carcinoma, high HOTAIR expression was significantly associated with TNM stage (III/IV vs. I/II: OR 6.90, 95% CI: 2.81-16.9) without heterogeneity. In gastric cancer, HOTAIR expression was found to be significantly associated with lymph node metastases (present vs. absent: OR 4.47, 95% CI: 1.88-10.63) and vessel invasion (positive vs. negative: OR 2.88, 95% CI: 1.38-6.04) without obvious heterogeneity. CONCLUSIONS: HOTAIR abundance may serve as a novel predictive factor for poor prognosis in different types of cancers in both Asian and Western countries.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate: 1) the demographics and clinical characteristics, 2) the findings, and 3) the safety and effectiveness in a cohort of Chinese pediatric patients undergoing colonoscopy. METHODS: The study participants were consecutive patients aged ≤14 years old that underwent their first colonoscopy in the endoscopy center at the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University between Jan. 1, 2001 and Dec. 31, 2012. Demographic, clinical, endoscopic, and pathological findings were collected. RESULTS: The cohort consisted of 322 patients, including 218 boys (67.7%) and 104 girls (32.3%). The median age was 8.0 years old and ranged from 9 months to 14 years old. Hematochezia (48.8%) and abdominal pain/discomfort (41.3%) were the most common presentations preceding pediatric colonoscopy. The caecal intubation success rate was 96.3%. No serious complications occurred during the procedures. A total of 227 patients (70.5%) received a positive diagnosis under endoscopy, including 138 patients with polyps and 53 patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Bioactive peptides, either derived from nature resources or synthesized by rational design, have been demonstrated potential for therapeutic agents against numerous human diseases, including cancer. However, the mechanism of therapeutic peptides against cancer has not been well elucidated. Here we show that PGPIPN, a hexapeptide derived from bovine β-casein, inhibited the proliferation of human ovarian cancer cells line SKOV(3) as well as the primary ovarian cancer cells in vitro. Consistently, PGPIPIN also decreased tumor growth rate in xenograft ovarian cancer model mice in a dose-dependent manner. Further study demonstrated that the anti-tumor effect of PGPIPN is partially through promoting cell apoptosis by inhibiting BCL2 pathway. Thus, our study suggests that PGPIPN is a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of ovarian cancer or other types of cancer.

This study aims to investigate the role and molecular mechanism of anthocyanin in improving liver fibrosis through ferroptosis, providing a basis for drug development and targeted therapy. In this study, a mouse model of liver fibrosis was established using CCl4, and the anthocyanin treatment groups were administered 100 mg/kg anthocyanin daily via gavage. Furthermore, real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR), Western blotting (WB), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to assess liver fibrosis indicators and liver injury markers. Histopathological methods were used to confirm the morphology of liver injury in different treatment groups. The effects of anthocyanins on ferroptosis markers, NCOA4 and FTH1 expression, were examined through qRT-PCR, WB, and Co-IP. Confocal microscopy was used to validate the colocalization of ferritin and lysosomes. A differential expression model of TRIM7 was constructed to verify its impact on the progression of liver fibrosis. The present study demonstrates the hepatoprotective effects of anthocyanins in liver fibrosis, highlighting their ability to enhance hepatic stellate cell (HSC) ferroptosis and regulate ferritin autophagy. Moreover, TRIM7 is identified as a key mediator of anthocyanin- induced regulation of hepatic stellate cells activation for liver fibrosis treatment through modulation of ferroautophagy. Mechanistic investigations further reveal that TRIM7 exerts its influence on the process of ferroautophagy by controlling NCOA4 ubiquitination. Our study discovered that anthocyanins could improve liver fibrosis by regulating NCOA4 ubiquitination through TRIM7, thereby affecting hepatic stellate cells' ferroptosis levels.
