Abstract

The correlation between the peak spectra energy ($E_p$) and the equivalent isotropic energy ($E_{\rm iso}$) of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the so-called Amati relation, is often used to constrain the high-redshift Hubble diagram. Assuming Lambda cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) cosmology, Wang et al. found a $\gtrsim 3\sigma$ tension in the data-calibrated Amati coefficients between low- and high-redshift GRB samples. To reduce the impact of fiducial cosmology, we use the Parameterization based on cosmic Age (PAge), an almost model-independent framework to trace the cosmological expansion history. We find that the low- and high-redshift tension in Amati coefficients stays almost the same for the broad class of models covered by PAge, indicating that the cosmological assumption is not the dominant driver of the redshift evolution of GRB luminosity correlation. Next, we analyze the selection effect due to flux limits in observations. We find Amati relation evolves much more significantly across energy scales of $E_{\rm iso}$. We debias the GRB data by selectively discarding samples to match low-$z$ and high-$z$ $E_{\rm iso}$ distributions. After debiasing, the Amati coefficients agree well between low-$z$ and high-$z$ data groups, whereas the evidence of $E_{\rm iso}$-dependence of Amati relation remains to be strong. Thus, the redshift evolution of GRB luminosity correlation can be fully interpreted as a selection bias, and does not imply cosmological evolution of GRBs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; significant modification

Abstract

We generalize $f(R)$-theory of anti-evaporation/evaporation for a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole in $n$-dimensional space-time. We consider non-linear conformally invariant Maxwell field. By perturbing the fields over Nariai-like space-time associated with degenerate horizon, we describe dynamical behavior of horizon. We show that $f(R)$-gravity can offer both anti-evaporation and evaporation in $n$-dimensional Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole depending on the dimension $n$ and the functional form of $f(R)$. Furthermore, we argue that, in one class of non-oscillatory solution, stable and unstable anti-evaporation/evaporation exist. In the other class of oscillatory solution anti-evaporation/evaporation exists only with instability. The first class of solution may explain a long-lived black hole., Comment: 12 pages

5. Simulation Study on the All-Inorganic CsSnxGe1–xI3-Based Perovskite Solar Cells Using Isotypic Perovskites as Hole Transport Layers

Abstract

All-inorganic Sn–Ge-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have made great progress in recent years. Furthermore, they can be used as promising lead-free absorbers for PSCs, and p-type-doped CsSnI3, CsGeI3, and CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3could also be used as good hole transport layers (HTLs). In this simulation work, CsSnI3, CsGeI3, and CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3are used as both absorbers and HTLs. The effects of the dopant concentration of HTLs, the thickness of absorbers, and HTLs on the photovoltaic performance of PSCs were studied to optimize the device structures. The maximum efficiencies from high to low are 28.35%, 26.35%, 25.84%, 25.23%, 18.83%, 17.49%, and 11.79% for the TiO2/i-CsSnI3/p-CsSnI3, TiO2/i-CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3/p-CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3, TiO2/i-CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3/p-CsSnI3, TiO2/i-CsSnI3/p-CsGeI3, TiO2/i-CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3/p-CsGeI3, TiO2/i-CsGeI3/p-CsGeI3, and TiO2/i-CsGeI3/p-CsSnI3, respectively. The TiO2/i-CsGeI3/p-CsSnI3cell exhibits the lowest efficiency of 11.79% in all of the simulated PSCs due to the spike-like band offset at the i-CsGeI3/p-CsSnI3interface and high recombination rate in the p-CsSnI3region. It is found that the n-pstructures could have better photovoltaic performance (thickness of i-film approaching zero) than the conventional n-i-pstructures for the TiO2/i-CsSnI3/p-CsSnI3, TiO2/i-CsGeI3/p-CsGeI3, and TiO2/i-CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3/p-CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3PSCs if the defects in HTLs created by high doping can be effectively controlled. The efficiencies of PSCs are sensitive to the defect density and defect level position, and the influence of defect density on the PV performance is larger than that of the defect level position. The solar cells could maintain high power conversion efficiency for defect density below about 5 × 1017cm–3. Furthermore, the increase of the interface trap density is found to reduce the photovoltaic performance of PSCs. Our study provides insight into the optimal design of CsSnxGe1–xI3-based PSCs.

Abstract

Objective. Ultra-high-dose-rate radiotherapy, referred to as FLASH therapy, has been demonstrated to reduce the damage of normal tissue as well as inhibiting tumor growth compared with conventional dose-rate radiotherapy. The transient hypoxia may be a vital explanation for sparing the normal tissue. The heterogeneity of oxygen distribution for different doses and dose rates in the different radiotherapy schemes are analyzed. With these results, the influence of doses and dose rates on cell survival are evaluated in this work. Approach. The two-dimensional reaction–diffusion equations are used to describe the heterogeneity of the oxygen distribution in capillaries and tissue. A modified linear quadratic model is employed to characterize the surviving fraction at different doses and dose rates. Main results. The reduction of the damage to the normal tissue can be observed if the doses exceeds a minimum dose threshold under the ultra-high-dose-rate radiation. Also, the surviving fraction exhibits the 'plateau effect' under the ultra-high dose rates radiation, which signifies that within a specific range of doses, the surviving fraction either exhibits minimal variation or increases with the dose. For a given dose, the surviving fraction increases with the dose rate until tending to a stable value, which means that the protection in normal tissue reaches saturation. Significance. The emergence of the 'plateau effect' allows delivering the higher doses while minimizing damage to normal tissue. Abstract

Renal ischemia–reperfusion (IR) is inevitable in partial nephrectomy and kidney transplantation. Acute tubular necrosis (ATN) induced by renal IR causes the loss of functional units in the kidney, pathologically presenting as the nonhomogeneous distribution of normal uriniferous tubules and usually used to characterize kidney activity. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been proven to have the ability to image the kidney microstructure in vivo and in real time. However, a fast image analysis method is needed for clinical application purpose. In this work, a new method for assessing renal IR injury was developed using a fractal-dimension-based texture of the OCT kidney image. Thirty-five Wistar rats were divided into seven groups for renal ischemia–reperfusion: control and various ischemia-time groups. A time series of 3D OCT kidney images was obtained. We calculated the fractal dimension (FD) of OCT en face images and found that the value increased gradually and finally became stable after 90 min of reperfusion. The stable value in the long-ischemia-time group was smaller than that in the short-ischemia-time group. The FD value of the OCT kidney image was highly responsive to renal IR injury. Abstract

Major depressive disorder affects around 16 per cent of the world population at some point in their lives. Despite the availability of numerous monoaminergic-based antidepressants, most patients require several weeks, if not months, to respond to these treatments, and many patients never attain sustained remission of their symptoms. The non-competitive, glutamatergic NMDAR (N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor) antagonist (R,S)-ketamine exerts rapid and sustained antidepressant effects after a single dose in patients with depression, but its use is associated with undesirable side effects. Here we show that the metabolism of (R,S)-ketamine to (2S,6S;2R,6R)-hydroxynorketamine (HNK) is essential for its antidepressant effects, and that the (2R,6R)-HNK enantiomer exerts behavioural, electroencephalographic, electrophysiological and cellular antidepressant-related actions in mice. These antidepressant actions are independent of NMDAR inhibition but involve early and sustained activation of AMPARs ([alpha]-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid receptors). We also establish that (2R,6R)-HNK lacks ketamine-related side effects. Our data implicate a novel mechanism underlying the antidepressant properties of (R,S)-ketamine and have relevance for the development of next-generation, rapid-acting antidepressants. Abstract

Metal-contaminated sediments in lakes is a global concern that poses toxicological risk to aquatic organisms. This study performed bioassays using the submerged macrophyte, Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hara, exposed to contaminated sediments collected from five locations in Dianchi Lake, Yunnan, China. Among the sediments collected, Igeo showed enrichment of As and Cd in Dianchi Lake sediments. In spite of enriched toxic metals at some locations, laboratory bioassays found no significant difference in leaf biomass or leaf photosynthesis rate between the sites. Root biomass and root activity showed significant differences between locations and were negatively correlated with the concentration of As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in sediment but not related to Cr. The above correlations were strongest for Hg and As, respectively. Accumulation of Cd and Pb to leaves of bioassay plants was observed, but this was not evident for As and Cr. Overall, the results indicate that V. natans can be used as a bioassay organism and measures of root toxicity are sensitive to metal concentrations present in Dianchi Lake sediments. Furthermore, the study species holds promise for use as a biomonitor of Cd and Pb sediment metal content.

48. Varying Theory Revisited.

Abstract

We revisit the variable theory recently developed by Alexander et al. [1-2]. We implement it to explain the current expansion of the Universe. The varying theory reduces one degree of freedom. The varying term (cosmological term) follows the energy density of the Universe. We consider such a theory which does not respect self-dual symmetry. The Bianchi identity enforces the term to be a constant for a theory without torsion. However, torsion can incorporate a varying term in the action. We consider a form of the action which has such a varying term, and the presence of only nonrelativistic matter energy density. We fit the luminosity distance according to the model and compare it with that in the model and find their close behavior. However, we find a current value of matter energy density larger than the critical energy density. Using the supernova data from Union 2.1 compilation, we further consider a different set of parameters, for which becomes close to unity but, however, greater. For this set of parameters, we find a negative value in the effective equation of state, however, the model has a very different pattern of the Hubble parameter from the standard scenario. The transmission system is one of the most important mechanisms in the electric vehicle that determines the behaviour, power and electrical economy of a vehicle. Transmission performance is usually related to motor efficiency, gear shift noise and passenger comfort during the gear shifting. For the investigation of a transmission in an electric vehicle, this thesis provides a new and easy way, a diagram-model on the vehicle speed –vehicle torque (VS-VT) plane, as a basis to test the efficiency of an electric motor (EM) in a multi-speed powertrain. In the introduction of the new method, the existing 2-speed transmission powertrain test rig in the laboratory is used as the investigation object. To evaluate the new method, Simulink model and a testing rig in the laboratory are introduced with the same electric motor and gear ratios for transmission. Results demonstrate that the new method is simpler than the Simulink model and testing rig and can make the characteristics of the electric motor more visible rather than other methods, which provides a new direction for the selection and optimization of the transmission gear ratios and more opportunities for further investigation. For the investigation of the advantage of the 3-speed transmission in an electric vehicle, the optimized single, 2-speed, 3-speed and 4-speed transmission are introduced to have comparisons. For the optimisation of gear ratios, a new method based on the new diagram model, the Cycle Track Density (CTD), is introduced in the investigation, which makes the optimisation process of each gear ratio visible and pertinent. The matched power source model is from the UQM 125 traction system in the powertrain test rig of the University of Technology, Sydney. The comparison is done in terms of the performance of the vehicle, particularly the efficiency of the motor and evaluates the application of a 3-speed transmission in an electric vehicle. In the realization of a dual input 3-speed transmission, according to the construction of a 3-speed dual clutch transmission, an innovation of the shifting mechanism is introduced to replace the conventional synchronizer which is driven by a complex hydraulic system. The new mechanism is named as Harpoon-shift and has got a patent certificate. Based on the concept, there are three types of structures, all of which have patent certificates. This thesis selects the unilateral Harpoon-shift as the object of study and introduces the working process of this shift mechanism. For the testing of the new concept, a prototype of the Harpoon-shift is manufactured and a test rig is assembled. The testing is done with different springs and speed difference to test the properties of the Harpoon-shift. The results demonstrate the practicability and the advantages of the new mechanism over the conventional synchronizer.
