Abstract

We report new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interaction cross-section using 39.5 kg-days of data taken with a p-type point-contact germanium detector of 840 g fiducial mass at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. Crucial to this study is the understanding of the selection procedures and, in particular, the bulk-surface events differentiation at the sub-keV range. The signal-retaining and background-rejecting efficiencies were measured with calibration gamma sources and a novel n-type point-contact germanium detector. 8. Measurement Of (Nu)Over-Bar(E)-Electron Scattering Cross Section With A Csi(Tl) Scintillating Crystal Array At The Kuo-Sheng Nuclear Power Reactor

Abstract

The (nu) over bar - e(-) elastic scattering cross section was measured with a CsI( Tl) scintillating crystal array having a total mass of 187 kg. The detector was exposed to an average reactor (nu) over bar flux of 6.4 x 10(12) cm(-2) s(-1) at the Kuo-Sheng Nuclear Power Station. The experimental design, conceptual merits, detector hardware, data analysis, and background understanding of the experiment are presented. Using 29882/7369 kg-days of Reactor ON/OFF data, the standard model (SM) electroweak interaction was probed at the squared 4-momentum transfer range of Q(2) similar to 3 x 10(-6) GeV2. The ratio of experimental to SM cross sections of xi = [1.08 +/- 0.21(stat) +/- 0.16(sys)] was measured. Constraints on the electroweak parameters (g(V); g(A)) were placed, corresponding to a weak mixing angle measurement of sin(W)(2 theta) = 0.251 +/- 0.031(stat) +/- 0.024(sys). Destructive interference in the SM (nu) over bar (e) - e process was verified. Bounds on anomalous neutrino electromagnetic properties were placed: neutrino magnetic moment at mu((nu) over bare) < 2. 2 +/- 10(-10) mu(B) and the neutrino charge radius at -2.1 X 10(-32) cm(2) < < r(nu e)(2)> < 3.3 X 10(-32) cm(2), both at 90% confidence level.

43. Wake Fields Excited in a Micron-Scale Dielectric Rectangular Structure by a Train of Femtosecond Bunches.

Abstract

We study the longitudinal wake field components which are induced in a rectangular, dielectric-lined structure having micron-scale dimensions by the passage of one or more charge bunches having femtosecond duration. The bunches would be obtained from a 500 MeV LACARA "chopper" which uses a TW optical wave from a CO[sub 2] laser [1]; the bunches are chopped from a macrobunch having duration ∼1 psec obtained from a high brightness 500 MeV rf linac. The high intensity laser wave accomplishes the chopping of the macrobunch into slices which are roughly 10% of the 10.6 μm radiation wavelength. These microbunches can be shaped into a rectangular cross section, approximately 10 μm × 150 μm in dimension, and will excite wake fields when injected into a rectangular dielectric wake field accelerating structure. We compute sample 3D wake fields, using the PIC code KARAT, as well as by means of an analytic method. The passage of just one pC bunch will set up a longitudinal wake field ∼40 MeV/m, and a train of ten properly-timed such bunches can produce a cumulative wake field ∼ 600 MeV/m. The choice of dimensions causes the wave solutions to approximate a single-mode excited by an infinitely-tall bunch in a 2D structure; a highly uniform longitudinal wake field in the crosssectional plane of the structure results, suitable for accelerating a correctly positioned "test bunch". KARAT includes the effect of interference between the Cerenkov radiation of the bunch with the transition radiation emitted as the bunch enters the structure. The wake field structure is several cm in length, and is both rigid and capable of microfabrication accuracy; it could accordingly be a reproducible module in a staged army. Abstract

We describe a multi-mode, dielectric-lined cylindrical resonator equipped with end reflectors in which wake fields are built up by a sequence of compact drive bunches. The parameters of the resonator are chosen such that the period of the wake fields is the same as the spacing of the drive bunches, and the length of the resonator is taken to be a half-integer multiple of the wake field period. Thus the wake field of a passing charge bunch will travel down the resonator and back so as to arrive at the front reflector just as the next bunch enters. Wake fields remain well defined because, excepting the lowest frequency TM mode, the resonator length is very nearly an integer multiple of the individual mode half-wavelengths. The device thus resembles a mode-locked laser resonator equipped with an "optical switch" (the passing bunches here). By numerical simulation, we find that the wake field amplitudes will increase with additional bunches, and show an example for an experiment to be done at the Yale Beam Physics Laboratory. For the first time we show how wake fields are reflected from boundary surfaces, an effect that should occur in every dielectric wake field apparatus and which we now exploit to advantage. The resonator concept permits a staged accelerator system, and could reduce the severity of beam bunch breakup due to charge asymmetries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
