29. Granular Sludge Coupling Nitrate/Nitrite Dependent Anaerobic Methane Oxidation with Anammox: from Proof-of-Concept to High Rate Nitrogen Removal

Abstract

This work developed a novel Membrane Granular Sludge Reactor (MGSR) equipped with a gas permeable membrane module for efficient methane delivery to cultivate nitrate/nitrite dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) microorganisms in granular sludge. As proof of concept, the MGSR was fed with synthetic wastewater containing nitrate and ammonium to facilitate the growth of n-DAMO microorganisms. The granular sludge of n-DAMO and Anammox was gradually developed and achieved a nitrogen removal rate of 1.08 g NO3–-N L–1d–1and 0.81 g NH4+-N L–1d–1. Finally, enriched granular sludge was successfully applied for nitrogen removal from the synthetic partial nitritation effluent. The combined dominance of n-DAMO archaea, Anammox bacteria, and n-DAMO bacteria in the microbial community was confirmed by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that a layered structure was formed in the granular sludge with Anammox bacteria in the outer layer and n-DAMO microorganisms in the inner layer when granules were fed with nitrite and ammonium. The high performance of nitrogen removal (16.53 kg N m–3d–1) with satisfactory effluent quality (∼8 mg N L–1) and excellent biomass retention capacity (43 g VSS L–1) make the MGSR promising for the practical application of n-DAMO and Anammox in wastewater treatment.

45. Fabrication of Nano-TiO2 Coating for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell by Vacuum Cold Spraying at Room Temperature.

Abstract

Deposition of nanocrystalline TiO2 coating at low temperature is becoming more attractive due to the possibility for continuous roll production of the coating for assembly lines of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) at a low cost. In this study, porous nano-TiO2 coating was deposited by vacuum cold spraying (VCS) at room temperature on a conducting glass substrate using commercial P25 nanocrystalline TiO2 powder. The microstructure of TiO2 coating was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and nitrogen adsorption test. A commercial dye (N719) was adsorbed on the surface of TiO2 particles within the coating to assemble a DSC. The cell performance was evaluated by employing simulated solar light at an intensity of 100 mW/cm2. The results showed that TiO2 coating was deposited by the agglomerates of nano-TiO2 powders. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) test of the as-sprayed TiO2 coating yielded a porosity of 49% and an average pore size of 17 nm. The assembled solar cell yielded a short-circuit current density of 7.3 mA/cm2 and an energy conversion efficiency of 2.4%. 46. Influence of Annealing on Photocatalytic Performance and Adhesion of Vacuum Cold-Sprayed Nanostructured TiO2 Coating.

Abstract

Composite powder was prepared using primary nanoTiO2 powder and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The nanoTiO2 coating was deposited through vacuum cold spray using both the composite powder and the primary nanopowder. The influence of annealing on the coating adhesion and photocatalytic activity was investigated. The coating adhesion was evaluated through erosion test by water jet. The photocatalytic performance of the coatings was evaluated through photodegradation of phenol in water. Results showed that annealing of the coating at a temperature from 450 to 500 °C yielded both higher activity and better adhesion. The adhesion of the coating deposited using the composite powder was better than that using the primary nanoTiO2 powder. It was found that the TiO2 coating, resulting from the composite powder, presented much higher activity than that deposited with the primary nanopowder. The better activity is attributed to the existence of large pores resulting from the stacking of composite powder, which benefits the reactants’ transportation through the porous coating. 47. Improved Efficiency of over 10% in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells with a Ruthenium Complex and an Organic Dye Heterogeneously Positioning on a Single TiO2 Electrode

Abstract

A ruthenium complex (JK-142) with an ancillary bipyridyl ligand substituted by a 3-carbazole-2-thiophenyl moiety was synthesized and explored as a sensitizer in cosensitized solar cells in combination with an organic dye (JK-62). The extended π-conjugation in the ancillary ligand enables the JK-142dye to have a red-shift light absorption band; however, the ineffective penetration of JK-142molecules into the inner surface of TiO2film results in low photovoltaic performance for the single dye sensitized solar cell due to its large molecular size of JK-142. Interestingly, when the deficient JK-142electrode was employed to assemble a cosensitized solar cell by additionally adsorbing JK-62dye, a considerably improved efficiency of up to 10.2% was achieved, which is favorably superior to that (ca. 8.68%) of N719in the same device configurations. The results shown here not only provide new vision on how to produce highly efficient solar cells using dyes with extended molecular structure but also open up a new way to position different dyes on a single TiO2film for cosensitization through controlling the molecule size.

48. Room-Temperature Deposition of Nano-TiO2 Coating by Vacuum Cold Spraying Using TiCl4-Aagglomerated Nano-TiO2 Powder for Flexible Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell

Abstract

TiCl4 treatment was used to chemically agglomerate TiO2 primary nano-particles to form a nanostructured powder in size of submicrometer. Nanocrystalline TiO2 coatings were fabricated by vacuum cold spraying at room temperature using the powder and were employed to assemble dye-sensitized solar cells. TiO2 coating of 10-20μm in thickness was deposited successfully on both F-doped tin oxide (FTO) conducting glass and plastic conducting substrate. The assembled solar cell with an FTO conducting glass yielded a short-circuit current density of 9.7 mA/cm2 and an energy conversion efficiency of 3.3%. Using the plastic substrate, the cell efficiency was 1.9%. These results suggest that TiCl4-treated nanocrystalline TiO2 agglomerates can be used to deposit TiO2 coating by vacuum cold spraying at low temperature for flexible dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract

An organic dye (JK218) with thiol moiety as an anchoring group was synthesized and explored to assemble a cosensitized TiO2 electrode in combination with an inorganic CdS quantum-dot. Due to the selective adsorption of JK218 on the surface of CdS through thiol group, the developed cosensitized electrode demonstrates cascade architecture with CdS coating on TiO2 while JK218 functions as a covering on CdS. Most importantly, the energy levels of the TiO2-CdS-JK218 electrode were also found to be stepwise aligned, which accordingly makes electrons efficiently inject from JK218 to CdS under illumination and finally collect to TiO2. This constructed cosensitized electrode with an organic sensitizer (JK218) and an inorganic quantum-dot (CdS) being selectively bonded together is expected to be valuable for the interface design of next generation solar cells. Abstract: With 4.2nm quantum-dots (QDs) as seeds on TiO2 film, a highly efficient TiO2 photoelectrode was prepared by a seed-growing process using chemical bath deposition technique, followed by a covering process with ZnS layer, and a post-sintering process at 400°C.
