We report evidence for superconductivity with onset temperatures up to 11 K in thin films of the infinite-layer nickelate parent compound NdNiO$_2$. A combination of oxide molecular-beam epitaxy and atomic hydrogen reduction yields samples with high crystallinity and low residual resistivities, a substantial fraction of which exhibit superconducting transitions. We survey a large series of samples with a variety of techniques, including electrical transport, scanning transmission electron microscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, to investigate the possible origins of superconductivity. We propose that superconductivity could be intrinsic to the undoped infinite-layer nickelates but suppressed by disorder due to its nodal order parameter, a finding which would necessitate a reconsideration of the nickelate phase diagram. Another possible hypothesis is that the parent materials can be hole doped from randomly dispersed apical oxygen atoms, which would suggest an alternative pathway for achieving superconductivity., Comment: Main: 10 pages, 6 figures. Superconductivity in infinite layer nickelates Nd1-xSrxNiO2 has so far been achieved only in thin films raising questions on the role of substrates and interfaces. Given the challenges associated with their synthesis it is imperative to identify their intrinsic properties. We use Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) to investigate the influence of the SrTiO3 capping layer on the excitations of Nd1-xSrxNiO2 (x = 0 and 0.2). Spin excitations are observed in parent and 20% doped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 regardless of capping, proving that magnetism is intrinsic to infinite-layer nickelates and appears in a significant fraction of their phase diagram. In parent and superconducting Nd1-xSrxNiO2, the spin excitations are slightly hardened in capped samples compared to the non-capped ones. Additionally, a weaker Ni - Nd charge transfer peak at ~ 0.6 eV suggests that the hybridization between Ni 3d and Nd 5d orbitals is reduced in capped samples. From our data, capping induces only minimal differences in Nd1-xSrxNiO2 and we phenomenologically discuss these differences based on the reconstruction of the SrTiO3 - NdNiO2 interface and other mechanisms such as crystalline disorder., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

The nonreciprocal magnetoelectric effect, also known as the Tellegen effect, promises a number of groundbreaking phenomena connected to fundamental (e.g., electrodynamics of axion and relativistic matter) and applied physics (e.g., magnetless isolators). We propose a three-dimensional metamaterial with an isotropic and resonant Tellegen response in the visible frequency range. The metamaterial is formed by randomly oriented bi-material nanocylinders in a host medium. Each nanocylinder consists of a ferromagnet in a single-domain magnetic state and a high-permittivity dielectric operating near the magnetic Mie-type resonance. The proposed metamaterial requires no external magnetic bias and operates on the spontaneous magnetization of the nanocylinders. By leveraging the emerging magnetic Weyl semimetals, we further show how a giant bulk effective magnetoelectric effect can be achieved in a proposed metamaterial, exceeding that of natural materials by almost four orders of magnitude., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

In order to explore the consequences of spin-orbit coupling on spin-phonon interactions in a set of chemically-similar mixed metal oxides, we measured the infrared vibrational properties of Co$_4B_2$O$_9$ ($B$ = Nb, Ta) as a function of temperature and compared our findings with lattice dynamics calculations and several different models of spin-phonon coupling. Frequency vs. temperature trends for the Co$^{2+}$ shearing mode near 150 cm$^{-1}$ reveal significant shifts across the magnetic ordering temperature that are especially large in relative terms. Bringing these results together and accounting for noncollinearity, we obtain spin-phonon coupling constants of -3.4 and -4.3 cm$^{-1}$ for Co$_4$Nb$_2$O$_9$ and the Ta analog, respectively. Analysis reveals that these coupling constants derive from interlayer (rather than intralayer) exchange interactions and that the interlayer interactions contain competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic contributions. At the same time, beyond-Heisenberg terms are minimized due to fortuitous symmetry considerations, different than most other 4$d$- and 5$d$-containing oxides. Comparison with other contemporary oxides shows that spin-phonon coupling in this family of materials is among the strongest ever reported, suggesting an origin for magnetoelectric coupling.

We have developed an {\it ab initio} deformed in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) for open-shell nuclei. This is a single-reference IMSRG in deformed Hartree-Fock (HF) basis. Deformed wave functions are more efficient in describing deformed nuclei. The broken spherical symmetry needs to be restored by angular momentum projection, which is computational expensive. The angular momentum mainly capture the static correlations and can be estimated by the projection of the HF state. In this work, we do deformed IMSRG calculation and add the correlation energy from projected HF as a leading order approximation. As the test ground, we have calculated the deformed $^{8,10}\rm Be$ isotopes with the optimized chiral interaction NNLO$_{\rm opt}$. The results are benchmarked with the no-core shell model and valence space IMSRG calculations. Then we systematically investigated the ground-state energies and charge radii of even-even isotopes from light beryllium to medium-mass magnesium. The calculated energies are extrapolated to infinite basis space by an exponential form, and compared with the extrapolated valence-space IMSRG results and experimental data available.

We provide a theoretical description of light scattering by a spherical particle whose permittivity is modulated in time at twice the frequency of the incident light. Such a particle acts as a finite-sized photonic time crystal and, despite its sub-wavelength spatial extent, can host optical parametric amplification. Conditions of parametric Mie resonances in the sphere are derived. We show that time-modulated materials provide a route to tailor directional light amplification, qualitatively different from that in scatterers made from a gain media. We design two characteristic time-modulated spheres that simultaneously exhibit light amplification and desired radiation patterns, including those with zero backward and/or vanishing forward scattering. The Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) monitors the Martian atmosphere through different spectral intervals in the infrared light. We present a retrieval algorithm tailored to the analysis of spectra acquired in nadir geometry by TIRVIM, the thermal infrared channel of ACS. Our algorithm simultaneously retrieves vertical profile of atmospheric temperature up to 50 km, surface temperature, and integrated optical depth of dust and water ice clouds. The specificity of the TIRVIM dataset lies in its capacity to resolve the diurnal cycle over a 54 sol period. However, it is uncertain to what extent can the desired atmospheric quantities be accurately estimated at different times of day. Here we first present an Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE). We produce synthetic observations at various latitudes, seasons and local times and run our retrieval algorithm on these synthetic data, to evaluate its robustness. Different sources of biases are documented, in particular regarding aerosol retrievals. Atmospheric temperature retrievals are found robust even when dust and/or water ice cloud opacities are not well estimated in our OSSE. We then apply our algorithm to TIRVIM observations in April-May, 2018 and perform a cross-validation of retrieved atmospheric temperature and dust integrated opacity by comparisons with thousands of co-located Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) retrievals. Most differences between TIRVIM and MCS atmospheric temperatures can be attributed to differences in vertical sensitivity. Daytime dust opacities agree well with each other, while biases are found in nighttime dust opacity retrieved from TIRVIM at this season., Comment: 51 pages, 29 figures. Exploring the interaction of light with time-varying media is an intellectual challenge that, in addition to fundamental aspects, provides a pathway to multiple promising applications. Time modulation constitutes here a fundamental handle to control light on entirely different grounds. That holds particularly for complex systems simultaneously structured in space and time. However, a realistic description of time-varying materials requires considering their material dispersion. The combination thereof has barely been considered but is crucial since dispersion accompanies materials suitable for dynamic modulation. As a canonical scattering problem from which many general insights can be obtained, we develop and apply a self-consistent analytical theory of light scattering by a sphere made from a time-varying material exemplarily assumed to have a Lorentzian dispersion. We discuss the eigensolutions of Maxwell's equations in the bulk and present a dedicated Mie theory. The proposed theory is verified with full-wave simulations. We disclose effects such as energy transfer from the time-modulation subsystem to the electromagnetic field, amplifying carefully structured incident fields. Since many phenomena can be studied on analytical grounds with our formalism, it will be indispensable when exploring electromagnetic phenomena in time-varying and spatially structured finite objects of other geometries., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Solar filaments are dark structures on the solar disk, with an elongated spine and several barbs extending out from the spine. When appearing above the solar limb, a filament is called a prominence, with several feet extending down to the solar surface. It was generally thought that filament barbs are simply the prominence feet veering away from the spine and down to the solar surface. However, it was recently noticed that there might be another dynamic type of barbs, which were proposed to be due to filament thread longitudinal oscillation. If this is the case, the dynamic barbs would not extend down to the solar surface. With the quadrature observations of a filament barb on 2011 June 5 from the {\it Solar Dynamics Observatory} and the {\it STEREO} satellites, we confirm that the filament barb is due to filament thread longitudinal oscillations. Ferroic materials are well known to exhibit heterogeneity in the form of domain walls. Understanding the properties of these boundaries is crucial for controlling functionality with external stimuli and for realizing their potential for ultra-low power memory and logic devices as well as novel computing architectures. In this work, we employ synchrotron-based near-field infrared nano-spectroscopy to reveal the vibrational properties of ferroelastic (90$^\circ$ ferroelectric) domain walls in the hybrid improper ferroelectric Ca$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$. By locally mapping the Ti-O stretching and Ti-O-Ti bending modes, we reveal how structural order parameters rotate across a wall. Thus, we link observed near-field amplitude changes to underlying structural modulations and test ferroelectric switching models against real space measurements of local structure. This initiative opens the door to broadband infrared nano-imaging of heterogeneity in ferroics.

We identify a strong Ly-alpha damping wing profile in the spectrum of the quasar P183+05 at z=6.4386. Given the detection of several narrow metal absorption lines at z=6.40392, the most likely explanation for the absorption profile is that it is due to a damped Ly-alpha system. However, in order to match the data a contribution of an intergalactic medium 5-38% neutral or additional weaker absorbers near the quasar is also required. The absorption system presented here is the most distant damped Ly-alpha system currently known. We estimate an HI column density ($10^{20.68\pm0.25}\,$cm$^{-2}$), metallicity ([O/H]$=-2.92\pm 0.32$), and relative chemical abundances of a system consistent with a low-mass galaxy during the first Gyr of the universe. This object is among the most metal-poor damped Ly-alpha systems known and, even though it is observed only ~850 Myr after the big bang, its relative abundances do not show signatures of chemical enrichment by Population III stars., Comment: Updated to match published version

Using a sample of $447.9\times 10^6$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector in 2009 and 2012, we study the decays $\chi_{c0,2}\to$ $\eta'\eta'$ and $\eta\eta'$. The decays $\chi_{c2}\to\eta'\eta'$, $\chi_{c0}\to\eta\eta'$ and $\chi_{c2}\to\eta\eta'$ are observed for the first time with statistical significances of $9.6\sigma$, $13.4\sigma$ and $7.5\sigma$, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c0}\to\eta'\eta') =(2.19\pm0.03\pm0.14)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c2}\to\eta'\eta') = (4.76\pm0.56\pm0.38)\times10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c0}\to\eta\eta') = (8.92\pm0.84\pm0.65)\times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c2}\to\eta\eta') = (2.27\pm0.43\pm0.25)\times10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The precision for the measurement of $\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c0}\to\eta'\eta')$ is significantly improved compared to previous measurements. Based on the measured branching fractions, the role played by the doubly and singly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka disconnected transition amplitudes for $\chi_{c0,2}$ decays into pseudoscalar meson pairs can be clarified., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We present final statistics from a survey for intervening MgII absorption towards 100 quasars with emission redshifts between $z=3.55$ and $z=7.08$. Using infrared spectra from Magellan/FIRE, we detect 279 cosmological MgII absorbers, and confirm that the incidence rate of $W_r>0.3 \AA$ MgII absorption per comoving path length does not evolve measurably between $z=0.25$ and $z=7$. This is consistent with our detection of seven new MgII systems at $z>6$, a redshift range that was not covered in prior searches. Restricting to relatively strong MgII systems ($W_r>1$\AA), there is significant evidence for redshift evolution. These systems roughly double in number density between $z=0$ and $z=2$-$3$, but decline by an order of magnitude from this peak by $z\sim 6$. This evolution mirrors that of the global star formation rate density, which could reflect a connection between star formation feedback and strong MgII absorbers. We compared our results to the Illustris cosmological simulation at $z=2$-$4$ by assigning absorption to catalogued dark-matter halos and by direct extraction of spectra from the simulation volume. To reproduce our results using the halo catalogs, we require circumgalactic (CGM) MgII envelopes within halos of progressively smaller mass at earlier times. This occurs naturally if we define the lower integration cutoff using SFR rather than mass. MgII profiles calculated directly from the Illustris volume yield far too few strong absorbers. We argue that this arises from unresolved phase space structure of CGM gas, particularly from turbulent velocities on sub-mesh scales. The presence of CGM MgII at $z>6$-- just $\sim 250$ Myr after the reionization redshift implied by Planck--suggests that enrichment of intra-halo gas may have begun before the presumed host galaxies' stellar populations were mature and dynamically relaxed. Research reactors host a wide range of activities that make use of the intense neutron fluxes generated at these facilities. Recent interest in performing measurements with relatively low event rates, e.g. reactor antineutrino detection, at these facilities necessitates a detailed understanding of background radiation fields. Both reactor-correlated and naturally occurring background sources are potentially important, even at levels well below those of importance for typical activities. Here we describe a comprehensive series of background assessments at three high-power research reactors, including $\gamma$-ray, neutron, and muon measurements. For each facility we describe the characteristics and identify the sources of the background fields encountered. The general understanding gained of background production mechanisms and their relationship to facility features will prove valuable for the planning of any sensitive measurement conducted therein., Comment: 26 pages, 28 figures.
