Purpose: The principal objective of this study is to identify and recommend auspicious research directions within the field of family business research, with a specific focus on the wealth creator. In conjunction with these research trajectories, the paper also aims to elucidate the potential implications of cultivating these lines of inquiry on the existing family business literature. Design/methodology/approach: This perspective paper adopts a comprehensive approach to examine the multifaceted role of the wealth creator in the context of family businesses. It reviews the last decades of research that resulted in the identification of this role within family business and proposes future research avenues to further address their characterization and importance. Findings: Investigating the wealth creator's attributes can provide insights into their role, the importance of timely identification and its preparatory elements. Furthermore, this exploration can shed light on the dynamics of inter-family relationships within family businesses and enrich the literature on power transition and continuity in family enterprises. Additionally, the maturation of the wealth creator concept may significantly impact the management of wealth portfolios, facilitating smoother wealth transfer, strategic portfolio management and the preservation of multi-generational wealth. Originality/value: This research offers a diverse understanding of the role of the wealth creator in family businesses. The findings also enhance the comprehension of family business dynamics, enriching the literature on succession. Lastly, the offered research avenues contribute to addressing the challenges of sustaining family wealth and ensuring the continuity of family businesses across generations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a documentary review about the necessary governance bodies to manage the family business (FB). The main objective was to examine the current state in the literature on this subject. A systematic review of documents was used, combining various bibliometric methods, in order to map the topics related to corporate, family, and FB governance to better understand their development and interaction. In the analyzed articles, it was discovered that the FB consists of three areas, which are family, business, and ownership. These operate efficiently in the first generation when everything revolves around the figure of the founder; however, the growth of these areas brings management challenges, hence the need to establish governance bodies. It was concluded that the creation and operation of these bodies are fundamental to contribute to the management of the FB in all its aspects, thereby breaking free from founder dependence to achieve a professionalized corporate governance.

Objective: to describe the events that marked the development process experienced by families of people with suicidal behavior. Methodology: study based on the Calgary Family Assessment Model. The study had the participation of nine families of individuals who used the Suicide Study and Prevention Center located in the city of Salvador - Bahia, Brazil. Online data collection took place between November 2021 and May 2022. The questions were previously structured in a form based on the CFAM framework. Once transcribed, the interviews went through the transcreation and textualization processes. Results: among the categories that emerged, the following stand out: Experience of intra-family violence as a precipitating factor for suicidal behavior in the life cycle of the families; Self-renunciation in favor of caring for a person with suicidal behavior; and Animal bonding as a protective factor for suicidal behavior in the development process experienced by families of people with suicidal behavior. Conclusion: by elucidating such events, it is possible to connect with and intervene in the conflicts, as well as using them as protective factors against suicide attempts.

Background: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a rare developmental and epileptic encephalopathy that presents with frequent and prolonged seizures resistant to treatment as well as cognitive problems such as behavioral and developmental delays. However, there is a lack of scientific literature on the impact of this condition on caregivers and the family unit. Objectives: To find out the social and emotional impact of DS on the family unit, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the disease's effects on both the family and caregivers. Materials and methods: A tailored online survey was administered to Spanish DS families, collecting data on the employment, financial, emotional, and social status of patients and caregivers. Results: A total of 112 Spanish caregivers participated in the study. The mean age of the 112 parents was 46.61 years, and 77.68 % of them were mothers. The majority of caregivers had to quit their jobs or reduce their working hours to take care of their child with DS, being the most of them mothers. Most of the caregivers felt that they were not well-informed by healthcare professionals (HCPs) and the Spanish National Health System (NHS). Despite access to resources, families often face financial strain and challenges in obtaining sufficient support, highlighting the need for enhanced social, economic, and psychological backing. In addition, both sentimental and social relationships were negatively impacted in the vast majority of respondents. Conclusions: The study advocates for policy reforms, integrated social services, community programs, and multidisciplinary efforts to improve the quality of life and social integration for those affected by DS.

The social lives of brown bears (Ursus arctos) are still largely a mystery, partly because of the difficulty in studying the topic. Here we report on the interactions between 2 Himalayan brown bear family units at a dump site roughly 53 km outside of Srinagar, Kashmir, India. Brown bear cubs from 2 different mothers were observed playing together between 3 September and 16 October 2021, on 13 discrete occasions. These play sessions lasted 20–80 minutes (mean H 24.3 ± 4.59 standard deviation). Each interaction ended with the family units leaving independently. The relationship between the mother bears is not known, though we speculate that they may be related. Although the interactions do not constitute adoption, they do demonstrate a level of tolerance by mother bears toward cubs to which they did not give birth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children raised by single parents face many challenges that can be social, psychological, cultural or economic, resulting in erratic behavior. This study explored the dilemmas of children raised by single parents in the Kingdom of Eswatini in Lubombo region. The study was undertaken in a transformative research paradigm, and the Participatory Action Learning Action Research (PALAR) design was used. This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to get views from single parents and children in single parenting, and the data were analysed through thematic analysis. A sample of six single parents and six children raised by single parents were selected from the Lubombo region using the purposive sampling technique. Informed by Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, the findings of the study revealed that single parenting led to children feeling abandoned, rejected and unloved by the absent parent, which had social and psychological effects on the children. The study concluded that children raised by single parents face psychological, social, economic and cultural challenges. Most of them are fixated and need counselling. The study suggests, for Eswatini, that the Home Affairs Department, in partnership with relevant non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should make psychological counselling readily available for single parents and their children.

There is a lack of evidence about the possible role of the family environment in the occurrence of the bullying phenomenon among school-age children. We carried out a systematic review of the literature to investigate the positive and negative family determinants associated with the bullying phenomenon. Potential classes of determinants - e.g. interparental conflict and/or parenting behaviours - were studied by searching peer-reviewed literature published between the January 2008 and December 2018 on PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS and ISI Web of Science. At the end of the eligibility process, only 3 studies met all the inclusion criteria, and were then included in the narrative synthesis. Mother destructive profile and excessive infant crying resulted significantly associated with child emotional insecurity and conduct/mood problems at the age of 5-6 years, respectively. Moreover, a decrease of medically unexplained symptoms in adolescent was observed after a one-year family functioning therapy. This body of evidences should raise the interest of the researchers in order to invest in depth the family unit impact on the bullying phenomenon in school environment.

Parents frequently attempt to shield their children from distressing prognostic information. Pediatric oncology providers sometimes follow parental request for non-disclosure of prognostic information to children, invoking what we call the stability of the family argument. They believe that if they inform the child about terminal prognosis despite parental wishes, cohesion and family structure will be severely hampered. In this paper, we argue against parental request for non-disclosure. Firstly, we present the stability of the family argument in more detail. We, then, set out the (conceptual, legal, systemic) entitativity of the family and the kind of value the stability of the family argument assumes, before we set on to critically evaluate the argument. Our analysis shows that disclosure of prognostic information to children does not necessarily destabilize the family to a greater extent than non-disclosure. In fact, a systemic perspective suggests that mediated disclosure is more likely to result in a (long-term) stability of the family than non-disclosure. It is in the interest of the family to resist the initial aversive reaction to delivering bad news. In the final part, we draw a set of recommendations on how to facilitate decision-making in face of parental request for non-disclosure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study is relevant due to the necessity to analyze transformations in modern family-marriage relations. The objective of the study is to consider inevitability of the given transformations as an integral part of natural changes in modern Russian society. The leading approach to research of the given problem is the opinion that in new conditions of existence and society development an active process of change of former, traditional, patriarchal male dominated families with clear split of roles into new forms of family-marriage relations is taking place. The paper demonstrates a family-unit as a part of global social and economic system in which structural changes of the whole system naturally involve changes of its elements; changes typical for a modern family-unit in marriage behavior, family functions and value orientations are described. Research findings represent practical scientific importance for those working in the field of social research in sociology, psychology, population science.

This paper addresses the relationship between the functioning of the board of directors and organizational performance from an analysis of perceptions. The objective is to determine if there is a relationship between the perception of the operation of the board of directors and the perception of the influence of the board on organizational performance (economic performance, family unit and work environment.) For this, logistic regression models are applied in a sample of 123 members of the board of directors in family businesses. The perception of the functioning of the board of directors has been related to the perception of the influence of the board of directors on economic performance, the family unit and the work environment. RESUMEN Este trabajo aborda la relación entre el funcionamiento de la junta directiva y el desempeño organizacional desde un análisis de percepciones. El objetivo es determinar si existe relación entre la percepción del funcionamiento de la junta directiva y la percepción de la influencia de la JD en el desempeño organizacional (desempeño económico, clima organizacional y unidad familiar). Para esto, se aplicaron modelos de regresión logística en una muestra de 123 miembros de junta directiva en empresas familiares. Se encontró que la percepción del funcionamiento de la junta directiva está relacionada con la percepción de la influencia de la junta directiva en el desempeño económico, la unidad familiar y el clima organizacional.

This introductory article is intended to open the volume of work prepared by the participants of the 12th UNESCO Janusz Korczak Chair International Summer School. The participants presented these papers at the RC25 ISA Interim International Conference in Warsaw, entitled: "Language and Society. Research Advances in Social Sciences" (26-27.09.2019), exploring the concepts of gender equality and children's equality in liberal and conservative discourses and practices invested in language. The papers in this volume primarily use the methodology of discourse analysis and a range of tools and methods within this framework. The purpose is to shed light on how discourses inform preferences, behaviours and representations, towards the positioning of individuals in society, based on their respective gender and their individual status - whether an adult or a child. It is interesting to explore what is expected of the holders of these positions and whether they are able to confront and renegotiate their situation. The authors look into gendered childhood, analysing if differences can be found in so-called conservative and liberal discourses. The gender aspect of childhood and the resistance towards children's expected positions interlinked to their gender, is visible to diverse degrees in this selection of papers. The concept of social positioning due to one's gender is at the heart of this volume. The purpose of this research is to analyze national and international regulations on the protection of the family nucleus when its members are migrants in an irregular situation, as well as the right of access to justice for this population in a vulnerable condition. The research methodology used is descriptive, the method applied is the inductive and the qualitative approach. For its study, the Peruvian jurisprudence and the cases resolved in the inter-American system for the protection of human rights were reviewed, among other related texts on the subject. The structure of the work includes the description of the problematic reality, the right of the constitutional protection of the family against migration, the new approach to access to justice and the protection of the rights of migrants. Finally, the conclusive reflections of the investigator are presented, in which it is concluded that the Peruvian State must safeguard better the fundamental rights of migrants and their family, on equal terms and without discrimination on grounds of their irregular situation in the country. The Dublin III Regulation is the latest European law instrument that defines the system with which the Member State responsible for examining an application for international protection is determined. Despite the important improvements made to the previous legislation, the Regulation is still an instrument suspended between new and old, which on the one hand responds to the innovations of the European Union in the field of asylum, but on the other hand, is not able to meet the new requirements remaining attached to cases that are over twenty years old. The European Commission, in 2016, issued a proposal for a reform of the Dublin system. But, once again, instead of rethinking the fundamentally incorrect principles underlying the European Union's mechanisms, the proposed amendments reinforced many of the wrong premises. On 16 November 2017, then, the European Parliament, in examining the first reading of the Commission's proposal, adopted numerous amendments, eliminating or improving some of the controversial points of the text. However, the agreement between the European Parliament and the Council, imposed by the ordinary legislative procedure, will be difficult to achieve. The discussions under way in the Council since 2016 and not yet ended are totally disconnected from the Commission proposal and the Parliament amendments. Member States, in fact, are aiming for solutions to prevent solidarity from becoming mandatory and leaving everything in the hands of the Council. It is not clear whether the European Institutions will find a compromise in order to improve the Dublin System or will opt for the establishment of new regulations with different premises and principles.
