Previous research on the relationship between geographical distance and the frequency of contact between family members has shown that the strength of family ties differs between Northern and Southern Europe. However, little is known about how family ties are reflected in peoples’ conversations on social media, despite research showing the relevance of social media data for understanding users’ daily expressions of emotions and thoughts based on their immediate experiences. This work investigates the question of whether Twitter use patterns in Europe mirror the North–South divide in the strength of family ties by analyzing potential differences in family-related tweets between users in Northern and Southern European countries. This study relies on a longitudinal database derived from Twitter collected between January 2012 and December 2016. We perform a comparative analysis of Southern and Northern European users’ tweets using Bayesian generalized multilevel models together with the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software. We analyze the association between regional differences in the strength of family ties and patterns of tweeting about family. Results show that the North–South divide is reflected in the frequency of tweets that are about family, that refer to family in the past versus in the present tense, and that are about close versus extended family. Background: Visits present an opportunity for prisoners to preserve family ties and reduce isolation, but not all receive visits from family or friends whilst incarcerated. Aims: To locate, appraise and synthesise qualitative data on the experiences of adult male prisoners (aged 18 years+) who do not receive prison visits from family or friends. Methods: Nine electronic databases were searched from the date of their inception until March 2023. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist for qualitative studies, and data from the studies were synthesised using the thematic synthesis method. Results: Eighteen studies from seven countries (the USA, the UK [England, Northern Ireland & Scotland], Canada, Netherlands and the Philippines) were eligible for inclusion. Three main themes emerged: (1) reasons for not receiving visits, (2) harmful effects of not receiving visits and (3) the value of volunteer visitor programmes. Practical problems were cited as interfering with visiting opportunities, but also some prisoners or families chose not to meet in prison. Loneliness and depression were extensively described as effects of not receiving visits. Qualities associated with volunteer visitors included raised self‐esteem, improved mood and personal growth. Conclusion: Narratives of the experiences of adult men in prison without visits from family or friends suggest that not only the practical difficulties of imprisonment affect visiting; barriers that prisoners themselves impose would merit further exploration, as would family and relationship dynamics during incarceration and the emotional impact of prison visits, for both prisoners and their families. There are suggestions of therapeutic as well as humanitarian benefits from volunteer visiting programmes. This study looked into how female parliamentary candidates fared in the 2016 general election in Ghana. The frequency of media coverage and the prominence accorded to female parliamentary candidates were ascertained through an analysis of the Ghanaian Times and the Daily Graphics. The study also examine the framing of female parliamentary candidates in the reporting of the Ghanaian Times and Daily Graphics. There were 59 publications for the Daily Graphics and 31 for the Ghanaian Times, making it a total of 90 publications. The July 1, 2016-December 7, 2016 editions were used for the study. According to the study, the two newspapers covered parliamentary candidates more frequently overall, although they covered female candidates less frequently. The study also showed that when it came to giving priority to the coverage of female parliamentary candidates during the 2016 parliamentary election, the two national newspapers performed poorly. Of the eight front page articles about parliamentary candidates that the newspapers published, just two of them featured female candidates; the other six featured male candidates. The results showed that, based on the descriptions of female parliamentary candidates in their reporting, the Ghanaian Times and the Daily Graphics both stereotyped the female candidates. The framing theory (Goffman, 1974) etc., serve as the study's foundation. Gender-based Non-Governmental Organizations should create award programs for media outlets and journalists who cover more events that encourage women to enter the political sphere. Aim: Many studies have found that high altitudes are associated with suicide. Despite numerous studies in the literature, the mechanism by which high altitude increases suicide rates is not known. In this study, we investigated whether divorce affects the suicide rate at high altitudes. Material and Method: Using publicly available data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the average altitude above sea level, suicide rate, and divorce rate of each province over the last 14 years were calculated. Divorce rates, suicide rates, and altitudes were statistically compared at the end of the study. Results: The mean suicide rate did not differ according to altitude (r=0.112; p=0.322). The mean divorce rate differed according to altitude. The highest mean divorce rate was observed in the group with an altitude of less than 500 m (p<0.001). In the correlation analysis, it was found that altitude was negatively correlated with the divorce rate, divorce, and suicide rates were positively correlated, and in the regression analysis, high altitude and divorce rate increased the suicide rate (<0.05). Conclusion: Our study suggests that divorced people in high-altitude areas are in the high-risk group for suicide and that mental health protective interventions, especially for this group, may be appropriate for prevention. In conclusion, this study is important, as it is the first to investigate the relationship between altitude, divorce, and suicide. It is well‐documented that residential moves are connected to life events such as separation or widowhood. However, much less is known about the residential choices that follow these events in middle and later life (between ages 50 and 70) and how the location of family members outside the household relates to these choices. Comparing the cases of Belgium and Sweden, this paper addresses (i) the extent to which (im)mobility after separation or widowhood is associated with the presence of older parents and adult children nearby; (ii) the extent to which the choice of destination is associated with the location of older parents and adult children for those separated, widowed, and married individuals who moved, and (iii) how these patterns vary among men and women. We answer these questions employing logistic regression models and discrete‐choice models fitted to Belgian and Swedish register data from 2012 to 2014. The results show unique patterns of mobility around separation and widowhood which differ from those of continuously married individuals. Separated and widowed men and women in both countries are generally more likely to make a move towards their parents than continuously married ones. Widowhood is also associated with an increased propensity for a move towards one's children. In contrast, separation is associated with a lower propensity for moving towards one's children, especially among men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study examined the interactions between family environment, hope, and loneliness, and their subsequent influence on the subjective well-being (SWB) of 345 noninstitutionalized older adults (aged 60 years and above) in Singapore. Door-to-door surveys information was collected on family environment (cohesiveness, relationship closeness, and support), hope, loneliness, and SWB (life satisfaction, happiness, and absence of negative affect). Structural equation modelling was conducted to test competing hypotheses derived from life stress and integrated resource theories. The results revealed that family environment influenced SWB both directly and indirectly. Family environment decreased loneliness and increased SWB. Additionally, family environment influenced SWB by offering increased hope. Family environment sets the context for the SWB of older adults in Singapore. Families should therefore be targeted for interventions to reduce loneliness, increase psychological resources, and raise SWB during old age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increasing residential mobility is said to challenge existing social support systems as mobility raises geographic distances between family members. Since family social support is essential for health and well-being, this study investigates whether residential mobility affects familial social support following changes in proximity to family and kin. By applying a stepwise linear regression on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel study, this paper is looking at variations between different residential mobility trajectories regarding social support provision and spatial proximity to family members in Germany over a 10-year period. Our findings show that people who are moving within Germany are receiving significantly more social support from their family and kin, while internationally mobile respondents receive less compared to non-mobile people. Mediation analyses show that proximity to family and kin are accounting for the negative effect of international mobility on social support but cannot explain the positive effect of internal migration. Research Question/Issue: This study investigates the impact of family governance, including founder directors and their ties to family members on the board, on the social performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs), a special kind of social enterprise with dual objectives. Research Findings/Insights: Using a dataset of 735 MFIs operating in Bangladesh from 2007 to 2017, we find that founder directors and board members with family ties to the founder have an adverse impact on MFIs' social performance. These findings hold when we perform several robustness tests and endogeneity tests. Theoretical/Academic Implications: We contribute to the corporate governance literature on MFIs and social enterprises in two ways. First, our findings suggest that, when MFIs are confronted with dual performance objectives, founder directors may "trade off" social outcomes in favor of economic outcomes and therefore adversely affect MFIs' social performance. Second, our findings extend the literature by showing that the presence of board members with family ties to founder directors also adversely affects MFIs' social performance. Practitioner/Policy Implications: This study suggests that MFIs' board composition influences their governance and ability to oversee their social and financial performance effectively. If MFIs' social performance is a major concern of national policy makers, then regulation should be put in place to limit board recruitment with family ties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among people walking the pilgrimage route to the shrine of St James in Santiago de Compostela. The aim of the research was to investigate how a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago among a married couple or family affects marital or familial relationships, whether walking the trail to Compostela together influences the behaviour of family members towards each other and whether it forms positive attitudes and behaviour. The empirical basis of the study is the results of a survey among respondents who made the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, as well as in-depth interviews conducted with 24 spouses of pilgrims along the Way of St James. The study revealed that doing the pilgrimage as a married couple or family had a positive impact on intra-family relationships. According to the interviewees, going on the pilgrimage together helped to strengthen marital bonds and trust, improve communication and mutual connection, show care and affection and improve contact with children. This article looks at the impacts of mobility on individuals and their family ties in tourist destination communities, paying attention to the individualization process among the rural, ethnic minority population in contemporary China. Based on my decade-long ethnography in Fenghuang county, Hunan province, I explore how the rapid rise of tourism-induced mobility has brought individual autonomy and collective morality under constant negotiation among previously clan-based people, and what the course and consequences of ongoing individualization are for the non-Han population in China. I argue that individuals' greater mobility may enhance, rather than diminish, the importance of family, and that this is especially true for the rural, ethnic minority population in China. Their experience of dealing with individualization also reveals that the effect of social structure is to some extent unchanged, representing a case of "embedded individualization." Families are not only the first institution ever created, they are also, for most people, the first institution ever encountered. The preindustrial family structure, which was a function of local ecology and cooperation needs, instilled family members with different values, such as trust in strangers and respect for elders. These values passed through generations and, as we show in three studies, impact today's political attitudes and policies. First, using surveys of second-generation immigrants representing roughly 180 ethnicities living in 32 European countries, we show that the tighter kinship structure of a person's ancestors predicts right-wing cultural attitudes. Among those who are less engaged in politics, tighter ancestral kinship structure also predicts left-wing economic attitudes. In a second study, we control for country-level differences by comparing ethnic groups within countries and find that ancestral kinship strength predicts right-wing cultural attitudes but not left-wing economic attitudes. Finally, in a third study, we examine the policy implications of ancestral kinship. We show that stronger country-level ancestral kinship strength also increases anti-LGBT policies and welfare spending. Finally, we examine whether value systems link preindustrial kinship with modern political attitudes. This article offers insight into the motivations behind voluntary North-South return migration by examining returnees’ own understanding and perception of return. Adopting a bottom-up approach and drawing on semi-structured in-depth interviews with eleven Iranian returnees, this study asks: How do return migrants perceive and articulate what motivated and facilitated their decision to return from a prosperous country in the Global North to the challenging living conditions of their home country in the Global South? How do they explain the role of their stay-behind families in shaping their return migration trajectory? Informed by social network theory, this article showcases the agency of North-South return migrants as active social actors in the process, wherein their return is shaped by transnational relationships, particularly family ties, regardless of the context of return. Family ties act as a driving force of return migration not only when stay-behind families provide emotional and practical support to return migrants but also when migrants feel a sense of duty towards family members who have remained in the homeland and may need their care. This study contributes to scholarship on return migration by undertaking a critical examination of return migration theories grounded in economic models. In the study of voluntary return migration, scholars have focused significant attention on the economic push and pull factors informed by the rational choice theory. The economic models, however, do not fully explain the seemingly puzzling North-South return cases where migrants participate in return migration from a prosperous country to an economically adverse context of their homeland. This study highlights the role of family ties in return migration process and challenges the dichotomous success-failure narrative about return.

Research framework: With the help of the “Bureau des migrations intéressant les Départements d’Outre-mer (BUMIDOM)”, thousands of Guadeloupeans left their island for a better future. In their decision to leave, or to return, family ties have influenced their choices and migration experience. Objective: This article looks at the mechanisms operating within the couple and extended family that influence the migratory process of Guadeloupeans who emigrated to mainland France between 1963 and 1981 under the BUMIDOM scheme. Methodology: Semi-directive individual life story interviews were conducted in Guadeloupe and France with 31 participants on the migration policy who left Guadeloupe between 1963 and 1981, aged 64 to 87 at the time of the interview in 2022. The life-course approach as a framework for analysis highlights similarities and divergences of experience, and discourse analysis enables us to understand the way in which the family intervenes in migration choices. Results: While the motivations for leaving initially express a need for individualization and emancipation, the migratory experience is significantly oriented and influenced by the migratory imaginary and family ties. The question of “returning home”, when it arises, marks the limits of individualization and often determines the choice of the society to which one belongs.Conclusion: Family dynamics are an integral part of the decision to emigrate. Migration choices are influenced by the imaginary and representations of the host society; these representations circulate in the emigration society and are conveyed both by the migrants themselves and their entourage.Contribution: Families play a key role in the emigration process. This article questions the limits of the individualization of trajectories in a migratory context and focuses on the family logics that influence choices in a migratory context.

Using a sample of 1134 firm-year observations of non-financial family firms listed on the Spanish stock market in the period 2003–2020, we explore how women directors affect company performance, distinguishing between family and non-family female members on the board. We believe there might be faultlines between family and non-family women on boards that may well impair performance due to differences in agency conflicts and socioemotional links with the family firm. As the number of female family directors grows, we reveal that conflicts with non-family sub-groups become more prevalent, impairing firm performance. Opening boards to non-family women does, however, seem to be an effective way of enhancing firm performance when there is a critical mass of female directors. We provide a conceptual replication of an experimental study that uncovered a robust correlation between the strength of individuals' family ties and their distrust of strangers, striving to establish whether the link is causal. Using a different subjects pool and an online setting, we repeat the binary trust-game experiment from Ermisch and Gambetta and enrich it by manipulating the payoffs to create a low-trust and high-trust environment. The key finding is corroborated, but as expected, only in the high-trust environment. The two environments further allow us to impose a diff-and-diff design on the data, which rules out selection of low-trusting individuals into strong-tied families and gives us indirect evidence of causation, namely, that having strong family ties stunts the development of trust in strangers. Our findings support the emancipatory theory of trust proposed by Toshio Yamagishi and could be interpreted as uncovering the micro foundations of classic ethnographic studies, such as that by Edward Banfield, which described how subcultures fostering tight bonds within families or small groups make cooperation harder to be achieved. Originality/value: The relevance of the study is found mainly in the use of unusual variables, such as the participation of founders and descendants as shareholders, on the boards of directors, and as chief executive officers (CEOs), since it was not possible to identify any study in Brazil that addressed family participation in a fragmented way, separating the effects caused by founders and descendants, giving greater depth to the issue. In addition, it generates interest to the most varied audiences, including shareholders, regulators, analysts, and investors who have a specific interest in how family structures affect the performance of companies. Design/methodology/approach: Data related to shareholders, composition of the boards of directors, executives, family ties, founding families, founders, descendants, and financial performance were used in the research. An unbalanced data panel was analyzed through the generalized method of moments (GMM). Findings: A positive effect of monitoring and duality on the firms' performance was verified. The impact of family structure on performance was ambiguous. Founders and descendants that were CEOs or were working in management had positive and negative effects on the performance measures. Additionally, the participation of founders on the board of directors negatively impacted the performance. Sociological reflection on migrant families has grown over the years, widening its gaze to highlight the transformations that take place within them and that outline new relational models between the members and between them and the society of arrival. The migration experience changes family relations, modifying intergenerational and even gender relations, a concept that has become a true interpretative category of these modifications. Both family and subjective life practices emerging from studies and research show in the biographical paths taken by first- and second-generation women in Italy, multiform and non-stereotyped identity traits. The concluding part of the essay presents some results from the empirical investigation entitled Gender differences, gender stereotypes and equality aimed at second-generation young people in Italy.

When long-distance couples start living together, the decision about where to co-reside has important repercussions, as long-distance moves often lead to the loss of local ties. Drawing on Danish population register data on long-distance opposite-sex couples and cross-classified multi-level statistical analyses, we explore each partner's share in the total distance moved at the start of their co-residence. We examine the influence of local ties to family and gender asymmetries. Our findings indicate that women tend to bridge the larger share of the distance when moving into co-residence. Living close to non-resident children, parents or siblings and having resident children lower one's share in the total distance moved. Men's local ties to non-resident family have more influence than women's, while women's resident children seem to exert more influence. Our results suggest that traditional gender patterns shape couples' decision-making about where to live together and who migrates the greater share of the distance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyse the impact of voting rights in the hands of the dominant family owner on the presence of women directors in a sample of listed family firms in Spain during 2007–2020. As distinctive features of this paper, we examine whether women directors have or do not have family ties with the dominant family owner, use the control-chain methodology to identify the ultimate or dominant owner of Spanish listed firms and analyse a curvilinear association between family ownership and the appointment of family and non-family female directors in family firms. Drawing on socioemotional, agency and stewardship theories, our results show that when the voting rights of the dominant families are low, they appoint more female directors with family associations. The results also indicate that when family voting rights are high, family founders appoint more non-family women directors to benefit from their industry-specific expertise and objective advice. Overall, our findings suggest that when a certain level of family ownership is reached there is a need to reduce the appointment of women directors with family ties in order to move towards a more balanced and diversified board with a wider representation of skills, knowledge, diverse experiences and talent. Originalidade/valor: A relevância do estudo encontra-se principalmente na utilização de variáveis inusitadas, como a participação de fundadores e descendentes como acionistas, nos conselhos de administração e como chief executive officers (CEOs), pois não foi possível identificar nenhum estudo no Brasil que tratasse dessa participação de forma fragmentada, separando os efeitos causados por fundadores e descendentes, dando maior profundidade ao tema. Além disso, o estudo desperta interesse dos mais variados públicos, abrangendo acionistas, reguladores, analistas e investidores que tenham interesse específico em como as estruturas familiares afetam o desempenho das companhias. Design/metodologia/abordagem: Na pesquisa, foram utilizados dados relativos a acionistas, composição do conselho de administração, executivos, vínculos familiares, famílias fundadoras, fundadores, descendentes e desempenho financeiro. Um painel de dados não balanceado foi analisado por meio do método dos momentos generalizados (generalized method of moments - GMM). Resultados: Verificou-se um efeito positivo do monitoramento e da dualidade no desempenho das empresas. O impacto da estrutura familiar no desempenho foi ambíguo. Fundadores e descendentes que eram CEOs ou atuavam na gestão tiveram efeitos positivos e negativos nas medidas de desempenho. Adicionalmente, a participação dos fundadores no conselho de administração impactou negativamente o desempenho. Por fim, observou-se que a propriedade familiar impacta positivamente o desempenho das empresas, sugerindo que as famílias cuidam das empresas.

Studying the factors that influence commercial health insurance consumption is essential in insurance economics. Family ties are important factors that affect consumer behaviour, especially in Eastern countries such as China. We construct an index to measure family ties and examine their effect on commercial health insurance consumption. We also use an instrumental variable approach to address endogeneity and apply a complementary log–log regression to deal with rare-event bias. We find that family ties have significantly positive impacts on individuals' and families' commercial health insurance consumption. The effect of family ties on commercial health insurance consumption is greater in individuals/families with higher income levels, those in eastern provinces, and those who are older. We study the relation between nuclear family ties and corruption. Our theoretical model shows that the population share of people who desire close ties with their families (i.e. the extensive margin) has an ambiguous effect on the level of corruption, due to the presence of conflicting mechanisms. However, the strength of this desire among people who want close family ties (i.e. the intensive margin) has an unambiguously negative effect on corruption. The latter outcome finds support from our empirical analysis: Using micro-level data, we show that, in contrast to conventional wisdom and cross-country reflections, stronger family ties are negatively correlated with a broad set of activities that measure corruption. Based on online semi-structured interviews with middle-class women who were pregnant or had recently given birth in Western Europe (France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland), this study analyses how motherhood has been experienced and performed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The article reflects on the specific new risk assessments and responsibilities that emerged during the pandemic by showing women’s coping strategies concerning lockdowns and other public health measures. Using a COVID-19 lens also allows a broader analysis of middle-class families’ concerns about performing ‘good motherhood’. By highlighting the discrepancies between women’s expected and actual experiences, the prescriptive aspects of pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum phase are revealed and analysed, prompting us to consider parenting as a form of doing and proving. By underlining the importance attached to the expectant mother’s wellbeing, the partner’s involvement, the support of relatives, and the future socialisation of the baby, we argue that women face a myriad of imperatives to ensure a meaningful experience of motherhood.

The article is devoted to the consideration of regularities in the process of formation of regional landowning families in the territory of Ustyuzhna Uyezd in the 17th–19th centuries. The study takes into account the mutual ties between the clans, using the example of the landowning families of the Kolyubakins, the Linevs, and the Dolgorukovs. It was revealed from which administrative-territorial formations (pyatinas of the Novgorod Lands) and for what reason the landowning families of Kolyubakins, Dolgorukovs, and Linevs were resettled to Ustyuzhna-Zhelezopolskaya Uyezd at the beginning of the 17th century. The facts of relationships and family ties between the families of landowners under consideration are identified and the reasons for the emergence of these ties are analyzed on the basis of the analysis of a number of documents from the fonds of the Heralds office (F. 286), Pomestnyi Prikaz (F. 1209), and the Ustyuzhna Voivodeship Chancellery (F. 596) in the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts, which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, as well as of the results of the research on the history of the ancient Kolyubakin family, conducted by the author. It is shown that the family ties of the Kolyubakins, Linevs and Dolgorukovs led to the redistribution of landed property between these clans due to its transfer as a dowry or inheritance by collateral by nephews and grand-nephews from maternal lineage. In the course of the research, the Ustyuzhna branch of the noble family of Dolgorukov is reconstructed, including five generations of descendants, and covering the period from the end of the 16th century to the second half of the 18th century. The development of the family clans of the Dolgorukovs, Linevs, and Kolyubakins in Ustyuzhna Uyezd in the period between the 17th and the 19th centuries is analyzed. It is esbalished that at the end of the 19th century, of the three families to which this article is devoted, only the Kolyubakins still remained among the prosperous landowners of the uyezd. It is noted that the village of Rastoropovo in Ustyuzhna Uyezd, which survived to this day, was the geographical center of the events described in the article. The analysis made it possible to illustrate with specific examples and in detail a number of previously identified patterns in the formation of land ownership in Ustyuzhna Uyezd.

The study deals with the second part of the Brazilian telenovela Amor de mãe (Manuela Dias; 2019/2021, Rede Globo de Televisão, from March 15th to April 9th, 2021), which takes place almost a year after its broadcasting interruption on March 21st, 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It focuses on the maternal ties established by the main charac-ters and on the aesthetic arrangements of domestic interactions installed in shell-houses/dungeon-houses, whose transitory and transversal configurations, it is under-stood, can be transformed by sensitive appropriations that re-signify architectural (and sensitive) spaces, that is: ‘homes’ can become ‘prisons’ and vice versa. It is considered that the framings and consequent television images under analysis function as a symp-tom field, putting on screen reenactments alluding to social grids/enframings in multiple contexts of power relations. The article addresses the issue of pluralism in the axiological and normative area which affects Polish-Lebanese relations. It presents the findings of a research on the Lebanese community in Poland. The research gives insight into Lebanese citizens’ motivations for moving to Poland and their opinions on everyday life in this country.

Objectives Research on the role of siblings in older adult migration lags behind a growing number of studies on adult children as a mobility attraction. We attend to this gap by examining (a) to what extent the absence of partners and/or adult children influences older adults' (age 70–84) migration toward faraway siblings (at least 50 km away) and (b) how these migrations are patterned by the location of other family members (children, other siblings, and nephews/nieces). Methods We use multinomial logistic regression models and analyze dyads of older adults and all distant siblings from the Swedish population register data between 2012 and 2016 (N = 1,743,234). We control for several characteristics of older adults and their siblings that may affect the decision to move closer, including sociodemographic characteristics and measures of location-specific capital. Results Widowed, divorced, and never-married older adults were more likely to move closer to distant siblings than those with a partner. Not having children was associated with a higher likelihood of moving toward a sibling. Living near adult children or other siblings deterred relocation toward siblings, while family clustered at a distance reinforced the location's attractiveness for migration. Discussion As declines in fertility broadly reflect people's decisions to have fewer children or forego having families, siblings might emerge as more active players in the family networks of older adults. Our research indicates that siblings can be a destination for migration and, therefore, should be considered as important members of social networks of older adults, especially those who do not have partners and/or adult children available. Supportive family and friendship ties can serve different functions and thus might show different associations with an individual's health. Particularly, older adults might show varying health benefits of different types of supportive ties depending on their marital and retirement status. Our aim is to analyze relationships between different types of supportive social ties and autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, a physiological indicator of health that can help to establish the biological plausibility of the association—measured by heart rate variability (HRV). We present cross-sectional linear regression analyses of a German cohort of community-dwelling older adults (2008–2010; n = 1,548; mean age = 68.7 years). Our findings indicate that supportive friendship ties show significant positive associations (i.e., higher HRV) in individuals that are either not married or above retirement age. Supportive family ties show significant positive associations in individuals below retirement age. Significant results vanish or are reduced after accounting for behavioral/physical and psychological/cognitive indicators. We conclude that programs supporting the development or maintenance of friendship ties might be especially beneficial in unmarried older adults and adults above retirement age. Although the literature on social capital, social support and social networks uses the concept of emotional support, studies rarely recognise nuances of the emotional relationships in late life. Using a personal communities framework, we examine the subjective meaning of family and friendship ties that form the network of emotionally close relationships of a cohort of Chilean people between 60 and 74 years of age. Chile is an interesting case to investigate personal communities, as the country is facing both a rapid process of population ageing and the consequences of abrupt socio-cultural changes triggered by a military government. We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews using personal communities diagrams that enabled study participants to reflect on what and how different types of personal ties were important to them. Data analysis included thematic analysis of interview transcripts and classification of identified personal communities using Pahl and Spencer's typology. The personal communities framework proved useful in capturing the composition of older people's networks of close relationships and in reflecting the diverse ways different ties are relevant in late life. We further developed a complementary typology based on the distinction between 'clustered' and 'hierarchical' personal communities. This complementary typology adds a cultural dimension to understand better emotional closeness in late life in a context of rapid socio-cultural changes affecting levels of social trust.
