Purpose This study generated an understanding of familial resiliency following an adolescent's stroke and what resiliency-related outcomes were important to this family. Design and methods A qualitative case study design was used to collect data during an in-person interview. The interview was transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings Participants' narratives revealed that reengaging and establishing new activities, reconstructing identities, and changing perceptions regarding health and life itself were important resiliency-related outcomes. Conclusions The findings from this case study highlight innovative strategies that can be used to facilitate resiliency during strenuous times in a family's life, such as following an adolescent's stroke. Clinical relevance Clinicians and service providers have the opportunity to help facilitate resiliency by identifying which protective factors and positive outcomes are most important to a family following an adolescent's stroke, allowing clinicians to assist in achieving these outcomes. This research illustrates ways for families to convert resources into personally meaningful resiliency-related outcomes. Further research is needed to study familial resiliency as a part of an intervention to promote occupational engagement.

The aim of this diploma thesis is to research the area of family resiliency of children with autism spectrum disorder. The theoretical part deals with the resiliency phenomenon in general, stressful situations and strategies for their management by so-called coping mechanisms. This part is followed by family resilience, which provides brief description of the concept of the family, family resiliency itself and then informs readers about the specific models of family resiliency, out of which the most well-known concept comes from the McCubbins. The third chapter of the diploma thesis focuces on a family of a child with a disability. This part of the diploma thesis explains how the family responds to the child's disability, what adaptation phases they go through, and also reflects factors that can have positive impact on the adaptation of the family in a difficult life situation. The last chapter of the theoretical part focuses on the characteristics of autism spectrum disorders. It helps the readers understand the topic of autism spectrum disorders, their manifestations, partial diagnoses and also the effects of autism spectrum disorders on the family of an autistic child. Around 4.5 million U.S. citizen children are at risk of being separated from a parent due to deportation. This means that many citizen children who have a deported parent are growing up with fragmented families and long-distant parents. These children are often in the care of their remaining family members. Therapists need to understand what remaining family members can do to ease the transition for children and help them to make sense of their parent being deported. A retrospective lens is employed to explore adult experiences of their family post-deportation. Findings show that family went through a reorganization process after parental deportation which impacted how the child understood the deportation and affected the child’s perceptions and experiences of their parental loss. Implications are offered through the Family Resiliency Framework.

Families who care for schizophrenia suffer stress and lose the ability to treat. Family stress can be mediated by resilience. Objective: This study aimed to develop a family resilience model based on family-centred nursing for persons with schizophrenia. This study used a mixed-method cross-sectional approach. The population was a family of caregivers for persons with schizophrenia at Mental Hospital in Surabaya, Indonesia. The respondents were 137 families recruited by simple random sampling. Variables include family factors, risk factors, protective factors, patient factors, family stress, family resilience and family ability to care for persons with schizophrenia. The data were collected using questionnaires and then analysed with partial least squares. The statistical results afforded material for focus group discussions with six families and 10 health workers (psychiatrists, psychologists and nurses) in order to improve the model. The result showed family stress was influenced by family factors (path coefficient = −0.145; t = 2.26), risk factors (path coefficient = 0.753; t = 16.7) and patient factors (path coefficient = 0.159; t = 3.23). Family resilience is influenced by risk factors (path coefficient = 0.316; t = 2.60), protective factors (path coefficient = 0.176; t = 2.22) and family stress (path coefficient = 0.298; t = 2.54). Family resilience affects the family ability to treat persons with schizophrenia (path coefficient = 0.366; t = 5.36). The family resilience model increases family capability by 13.4%. The model helps families through stress management by controlling the burden and stigma so that families are able to survive, rise, growing stronger and be better at caring for persons with schizophrenia. © 2020 Nordic College of Caring Science

Background Family resilience is the process through which family members withstand and rebound from adversity. Aims In this study, we examined the effects of family resilience on the psychological distress of mothers of children with developmental disorders (DD). Methods and Procedures A Family Resilience Elements Questionnaire was developed, which measured the degree to which mothers possess elements of family resilience. The participants were 274 mothers of children with DD. We performed a hierarchical multiple regression analysis to predict maternal psychological distress. Outcomes and Results The analysis revealed that maternal psychological distress was increased by higher severity of children’s DD and decreased by higher family resiliency. Moreover, there was a significant interaction between the severity of children’s DD and family resiliency, where family resiliency moderated the relationship between maternal psychological distress and the severity of children’s DD. Specifically, the slope predicting maternal psychological distress based on the severity of children’s DD was decreased by increasing family resiliency. Conclusions and Implications These findings indicated that family resiliency reduced maternal psychological distress and alleviated the relationship between maternal psychological distress and severity of children’s DD. Thus, we suggest that clinicians need to take account of family resilience in interventions for children with DD and their mothers.

Established in 1889, the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (Corps) is one of the seven uniformed services and is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Corps is committed to protecting, promoting and advancing the health and safety of the nation with a history that dates back over two centuries, beginning as the U.S. Marine Hospital Service. Today, the Corps responds and serves in many areas impacted by natural disasters, disease outbreaks, terrorist attacks and public health emergencies. Corps officers have deployed to provide assistance during national public health emergencies (e.g., hurricanes, bombings, flooding and wild fires); to combat the Ebola epidemic in West Africa; and to provide humanitarian assistance in Latin America and the Caribbean. Corps deployments impact not only service members but also their families. This article offers a brief overview of the Corps and discusses how deployments impact families. Family resiliency and future implications for research and practice will also be examined.

This experimental research investigated the effects of Family Resiliency Program (FRP) on post-traumatic stress, grief, and family resiliency level for women with traumatic grief. The study was conducted with 24 women who applied to the non-governmental organization between 2012 and 2013 due to the traumatic loss of their husbands and who obtained a high score on the post-traumatic stress disorder checklist civil version (PCL-C), and the grief inventory (GI), and a low score on the family resiliency scale (FRS) in pre-test assessment. The experimental group (n=12) received an eight session (FRP) intervention developed by the researcher. A group of women in a control group (n=12) received no intervention. To determine the immediate and long-term effects of the FRP program with traumatic grief, post-tests (PLC-C, GI, FRS) were given to the experimental and control group in two and a half month and six month intervals, respectively. In data analysis of this study two way repetead measures Anova was used. In study results, FRP for women with traumatic grief was found to be significantly effective in decreasing post-traumatic stress and grief levels and increasing family resiliency level. The effects of the program persisted during the follow-up tests. The results of this research were discussed in light of the literature, with recommendations presented for counselors and researchers.

Traditional research primarily details child obesity from a risk perspective. Risk factors are disproportionately higher in children raised in poverty, thus negatively influencing the weight status of low-income children. Borrowing from the field of family studies, the concept of family resiliency might provide a unique perspective for discussions regarding childhood obesity, by helping to identify mediating or moderating protective mechanisms that are present within the family context.A thorough literature review focusing on (1) components of family resiliency that could be related to childhood obesity and (2) factors implicated in childhood obesity beyond those related to energy balance was conducted. We then conceptualized our perspective that understanding resiliency within an obesogenic environment is warranted.Both family resiliency and childhood obesity prevention rely on the assumptions that (1) no one single answer can address the multifactorial nature involved with adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors and (2) the pieces in this complex puzzle will differ between families. Yet, there are limited holistic studies connecting family resiliency measures and childhood obesity prevention. Combining mixed methodology using traditional measures (such as general parenting styles, feeding styles, and parent feeding behaviors) with potential family resiliency measures (such as family routines, family stress, family functioning, and family structure) might serve to broaden understanding of protective strategies.The key to future success in child obesity prevention and treatment may be found in the application of the resiliency framework to the exploration of childhood obesity from a protective perspective focusing on the family context.

The goal of this study was to gain a more complete understanding of the marital satisfaction of family caregivers based on a strength-based framework of family resiliency. Previous research has identified a relationship between the caregiving experience and coping, spirituality/religiosity, and hope, but no study to date has investigated the effect of those three variables on the marital satisfaction of family caregivers. We hypothesized that family caregivers who are spiritual/religious, hopeful, and use effective family coping strategies would experience greater marital satisfaction. A hierarchical linear regression analyzing data from 191 family caregivers supported the hypotheses. Implications for clinicians are discussed.

This study explored the experiences of 23 grandparents raising grandchildren to better understand the vulnerability and resiliency of grandparent-headed multigenerational families. Three key themes emerged: (a) family trauma with multigenerational impact, (b) multiple stressors impacting the custodial grandparents, and (c) family resiliency that can promote healing and growth. The discussion highlights complex intersections of trauma and stress, and resiliency and healing. Implications for social work practice include the importance of understanding the nature of trauma and resiliency in clinical interventions to ensure the healthy development of children and older adults. Implications for social work advocacy include the necessity to promote flexible policies that address the needs of grandparent-headed households.

Bu araştırmanın amacı, 5-6 yaş okul öncesi eğitim alan çocukların sosyal duygusal uyumu, anne-babaların evlilik doyumu ve aile yılmazlığı düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkileri incelemektir. Bu çerçevede çocuklarda sosyal duygusal uyumu yordamada anne babaların evlilik doyumu ile aile yılmazlık düzeyinin ve evlilik doyumunu yordamada aile yılmazlık düzeyinin rolü araştırılmıştır. Araştırmada ilişkisel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini 2015-2016 eğitim öğretim yılında Denizli il merkezinde ilköğretime bağlı anasınıflarına ve bağımsız anaokullarına devam eden 5-6 yaş çocukları ve onların ebeveynleri oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini ise basit rastlantısal yolla seçilmiş 208 çocuk ve ebeveynleri (208 anne ve 208 baba) oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada veri toplama araçları olarak LaFreniere ve Dumas (1996) tarafından geliştirilen ve Türkçe uyarlaması Çorapçı, Aksan, Yalçın ve Yağmurlu tarafından yapılan Sosyal Yetkinlik ve Davranış Değerlendirme - 30 Ölçeği (SYDD-30), Tezer (1996) tarafından geliştirilen Evlilik Yaşam Ölçeği, Kaner ve Bayraklı (2009) tarafından geliştirilen Aile Yılmazlık Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen veriler üzerinde betimleyici analizler, korelasyon analizleri ve regresyon analizleri yapılmıştır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Çocuklarda sosyal duygusal uyum, evlilik doyumu, aile yılmazlığı It is aimed in this study to investigate the relationships between social emotional adjustment of 5-6-years-old preschool children, their parents' marital satisfaction, and family resiliency levels. In this framework, the role of parents' marital satisfaction and family resiliency levels in predicting social-emotional adaptation for children as well as family resiliency levels in predicting marital satisfaction were studied. The relational screening model was used in the research. Participants of the study consisted of five- and six-year-old children and their parents, who had education at nurseries of primary schools and independent nurseries in central Denizli within 2015-16 academic year. Sample of the study consisted of 208 children and their parents (208 mothers and 208 fathers) selected via simple random sampling. In the study, the Social Competence and Behaviour Evaluation Scale (SCBE-30) developed by LaFreniere and Dumas (1996) and adapted into Turkish by Çorapçı, Yalçın, and Yağmurlu; the Marital Cohabitation Scale developed by Tezer (1996); and the Family Resiliency Scale developed by Kaner and Bayraklı (2009) were used as data collection tools. Descriptive, correlation, and regression analyses were performed on the data obtained from the study. Correlation analyses of the study indicated significant positive relationship between children's social competence levels and maternal marital satisfaction along with maternal family resiliency levels (bellicosity-defiance, self-competence, commitment to life, and control); negative relationship between levels of anger-aggression and maternal marital satisfaction; negative relationship between levels of anxiety-introversion and maternal marital satisfaction with family resiliency levels (self-competence and commitment to life).Moreover; positive relationship between children's social competence levels and paternal marital satisfaction with paternal family resiliency levels (bellicosity-defiance, self-competence, and commitment to life); negative relationship between levels of anger-aggression and paternal marital satisfaction with paternal family resiliency levels (bellicosity-defiance, self-competence, commitment to life); negative relationship between levels of anxiety-introversion and paternal marital satisfaction with paternal family resiliency levels (self-competence and commitment to life) were found.In addition, significant positive relationships were obtained between maternal and paternal marital satisfaction and the bellicosity-defiance, self-competence, and commitment to life aspects of family resiliency.As a result of regression analyses, it was observed that levels of maternal marital satisfaction along with family resiliency predicted children's social competence variability at about 17%; anger-aggression variability at 6%; and anxiety-introversion variability at 11%; whereas levels of paternal marital satisfaction along with family resiliency predicted children's social competence variability at 20%; anger-aggression variability at 13%; and anxiety-introversion variability at 16%. Lastly, it was observed that levels of maternal family resiliency construed levels of maternal marital satisfaction at 15%, whereas levels of paternal family resiliency construed levels of paternal marital satisfaction at 20%.Key Words: Children social emotional adjustment, marital satisfaction, family resiliency 105

Family caregiving for people with younger onset dementia affects everyone in the family unit. This article presents findings of a qualitative systematic review exploring the experiences of family caregivers of persons with younger onset dementia. A systematic search resulted in the inclusion of five relevant articles, and two groups within the family unit were identified—child caregivers and adult and spousal caregivers. Using the thematic synthesis approach, five themes emerged: dementia damage, grief for loss of relationship, changes in family roles, positive and negative impacts of family caregiving, and transition to formal care. The review findings support increasing evidence that despite the stress of caring for a person with dementia damage, family members have the capacity to cope, adapt, and grow through their experiences. Nurses can assist families to identify their unique strengths and enhance family resiliency so they can navigate the “lonely road” of younger onset dementia.

This article considers four methodological issues in the study of family resilience. The first focus is on measurement, in which the psychometric properties of reliability, validity, and measurement equivalence are described. The second methodological consideration is on efforts to establish causality in the absence of experimental manipulation. Here, the authors present longitudinal panel models as a prototypical approach, describing the possibilities and challenges of this and other techniques toward inferences of causality, especially in the context of family resiliency. Third, the authors consider modeling resilience as continuous versus categorical, specifically contrasting variable-centered versus person-centered conceptualizations and analytic approaches. Fourth, the authors consider the complexities of studying family resilience due to the multilevel nature of the phenomena. The article concludes with recommendations for a diversity of methodological foci as the study of family resilience advances.

This study was performed in order to verify the effect of family resilience in youth suicide. The subject was the third year of high school boys in Gwang-ju, 308 questionnaires were used in the analysis. In order to derive the results of a study, we used the statistical processing technique SPSS, to perform verification of factor analysis and reliability of each variable, AMOS analysis was performed for hypothesis testing. According to the result of the study, belief systems which was sub-variables of family resiliency affect communication, and communication influence on the idea of adolescents suicide. In addition, the belief system has an indirect impact on the communication mediated suicidal thought. Thus, If we emphasize the harmony between family, suicidal thought of adolescent will be reduced. So we proposed the way to increase the belief of the family, and ways to improve communication between parents and children.

The purposes of this study were to find correlation between family abuse experience, family stress, social support, family resiliency and happiness in university students, and to explore the mediating role of social support and family resiliency between family abuse experience, family stress and happiness. The subjects were 295 university students. The data were analyzed by means of frequency analysis, Pearson`s correlation and structural equation modeling with SPSS and AMOS. Instruments were Lee`s(2010) Happiness Scale for university students, Strauss`(1988) CTSP(Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale), McCubbin`s(1981) FILE(Family Inventory of Life Events and Changes), Yu`s(2004) Family resiliency of Family Health Scale and Park`s(1985) Social Support Scale. The major findings were as follows; Family abuse experience was positively correlated with family stress and negatively correlated with social support, family resiliency and happiness. Family stress was negatively correlated with family resiliency. Social support and family resiliency were positively correlated with happiness. Family abuse experience positively influenced family stress and negatively influenced social support and family resiliency. Social support positively influenced family resiliency and happiness. Family stress negatively influenced family resiliency. Family resiliency positively influenced happiness. Thus education program and counseling should be provided to increase happiness and family resiliency, and social support should be provide to increase the quality of life for university students.

Les particularités du deuil familial suite à un suicide à l’adolescence sont présentées après l’analyse de concept afin d’énoncer les particularités de ce lien potentiel., The concept of resiliency has been used in the social sciences for 30 years. It refers to the ability to bounce back, to grow, and to learn when confronted with a situation perceived as a challenge. Family resiliency is a newer concept and there is no consensus on its definition. A concept analysis, based on Walker and Avant’s approach, was used to help define family resiliency. First, the concept was distinguished from coping and invulnerability. Antecedent, consequences and attributes of family resiliency were then identified. In a broad sense, families should be facing a challenge for family resiliency to develop. Family development and learning following the suicide of one of its adolescent members seem intricately linked to family resiliency. The characteristics of family mourning following the suicide of an adolescent are presented after the concept analysis in order to help understand this potential link.

Adherence studies have taken center stage due to the life-threatening risks associated with nonadherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimens for people with HIV/AIDS. This study examines adherence through self-report of individuals on HAART regimens in a manner to account for demand characteristic bias, while still attempting to get an accurate portrayal of individuals' adherence to their medication. Results indicate that individuals who are more certain about their course of treatment, are more trusting of their medical provider, have family resources, and are more optimistic about life adhere better. The model predicts who will be adherent with 92% accuracy while accounting for 55% of the variance in adherence. Practice implications for increasing adherence and accurately assessing adherence are discussed.

This article describes and presents an initial analysis of variables generally associated with empowerment towards perceived beliefs concerning quality of life work domains for individuals with disabilities. The model examines the domains of importance, satisfaction, control and degree of interference of disability that an individual feels towards work. The internet based study used results from 70 individuals with disabilities in varying aspects of work. The variables composing empowerment that correlated strongly with the work domains include: self-advocacy, self-efficacy, perceived stigma, and family resiliency as measured through coping. Quality of Life concerning work was measured through the DSC-C a domain specific QOL instrument.

The purpose of the study is to contribute to the understanding of quality of life as it is experienced by a community-based, nonclinical sample of individuals with HIV/AIDS by applying family resiliency theory and cognitive appraisal concepts of uncertainty and optimism. Through the use of a Web-based survey, 125 individuals with HIV/AIDS completed an online questionnaire. Disease progression, as measured by CD4 count, is not found to be related to quality of life. When considered separately, both the family resiliency variables and the cognitive appraisal variables are found to predict quality of life. The overall prediction model, composed of the three sets of predictor variables—cognitive appraisal, family resiliency, and disease progression—is found to explain over 60% of the variance in quality of life of people with HIV/AIDS.

La integración de la familia en la rehabilitación del superviviente de cáncer, es fundamental para lograr mejores resultados y facilitar la adaptación al nuevo proceso. Tomando como referencia el modelo Family System Illness de Rolland (1984-2012), valoraremos las demandas psicosociales y las tareas específicas asociadas a este periodo. Trataremos de analizar las debilidades (factores de riesgo) y fortalezas (factores protectores) de los individuos y sus familias en estas circunstancias. Reflexionaremos sobre cuál es el soporte adecuado que debe recibir cada miembro y el grupo para favorecer la resiliencia familiar. The involvement of the family in the childhood cancer survivor rehabilitation, is essential to achieve the best results and to promote the adaptation to the new process. Taking the Rolland´s Family System Illness Model (1984-2012), we will evaluate the psychosocial demands and specific tasks required in this period, trying to analyse the subjects´ and their families’ weaknesses (risk factors) and strengths (protective factors) under these circumstances. We will ponder on the suitable support for every family member and the group as a whole so as to favour family resiliency.

In order to uncover personal attributes and systemic influences involved in being accepting and supportive of their sons' gay identities, 14 members of a chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays were invited to describe their coming out processes as parents of gay sons. A qualitative approach examined parental definitions of acceptance, the parents' relationships with their sons, the parents' renditions of their coming out processes, and ecosystemic influences on the parents' coming out processes. Ethnographic content analysis suggested that the relevant attributes of parental personalities and their proximal environments were similar in this sample including emotional investment in the people involved, openness to new realities, and the capacity to find and use resources.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis and their families are faced with significant challenges. The purpose of this research was to explore the nature of resiliency in the context of the family with hemodialysis. Naturalistic inquiry was used to elicit descriptions from 15 White patients on hemodialysis and their caregivers about what it was like to live withESRDand how they managed. Being on dialysis provides an understanding of the dialysis experience, strategies and resources represent the role of support systems and resources and the tactics the family uses to maintain and restore the well-being of the family unit, and having a positive life view encompasses the “bonadaptation” of the families as they were able to maintain the integrity of the family unit under extremely adverse conditions and continue “going forward.”
