The main purpose of this study is to present family farms as consumers and producers of renewable energies which provide them with an opportunity to reduce operating costs. The time scope of the study is 2014–2022, and the Farm Accountancy Data Network is used as the data source. The following research methods were employed: comparative and descriptive analysis, intensity indicators, ranking assignment and panel regression. Based on the values of energy output and energy costs, the rankings revealed a strong position of the Netherlands and Germany. As demonstrated by the study, energy production and consumption volumes depend on the farms' economic size, but are not impacted by production type. Another finding is that energy production covers only one-third of its costs. Also, both production volumes and costs were on a growth path on a year-over-year basis, with similar growth ratios. The European Union's leaders in energy consumption and production are the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, Slovakia and Sweden. The study included the structuring of panel models for energy output and costs and identified their determinants. Energy output depends on total inputs and grows as they grow. Energy costs, in turn, are related to utilized agricultural area, total output and family farm income. An important limitation of this study is that FADN is a provider of high-level data. Hence, it is impossible to tell what specific sources of renewable energy are used by farms, and how they are affected by such exogenous factors as climate, earmarked subsidies or energy policy. The findings from this study are discussed in the context of the European Commission's recommendations laid down in the Bioeconomy Strategy of the EU (2013), the Seventh Environment Action Program, the New Innovation Agenda of the European Union, the Report "Transforming Our World: the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" and the Circular Economy Action Plan. The article is devoted to the analysis of scientific material and the legal framework regarding the legal status of Personal peasant households (PPH) in Ukraine in the conditions of war and European integration. But the goal of introducing such a form of individual management along with the prevailing collective forms of land management in the Soviet period was significantly different from the tasks facing the PPH now. According to the Kyiv School of Economics, by 2021, 41.5% of products were produced by individuals - households. They dominate in animal husbandry, in the production of potatoes, vegetables, etc. It seems that a similar trend persists even now, in the conditions of martial law and European integration processes in our country and is a serious basis for ensuring food security in our country in conditions of war. Therefore, further research and improvement of legal status of PPH seems expedient. Official statistics prove a steady tendency to reduce their number. PPH is an economic activity that is carried out without creating legal entity by natural person individually or by persons who are in family or family relations and live together, in order to satisfy personal needs through the production, processing and consumption of agricultural products, the sale of their surpluses and the provision of services using the property of personal peasant household, including in the field of rural green tourism. Therefore, in the light of European integration and the most modern studies of European legislation, PPH fits perfectly into the modern European agrarian production system. The immediate tasks for improving the legal status of PPH are the review of approaches to the legal regime of their lands and the improvement of the mechanism of their state support with the subsequent transition to the European model of such support for small commodity producers. The legal regime of land plots for РРH should be comprehensive with permission to build manor house and hotel type residential buildings. This article addresses the issue of public support for the development of renewable energy and the assessment of this support from the perspective of farmers in Eastern Poland. Since it is a region characterized by a relatively high share of agriculture in the economy, a diversified structure of this sector, and at the same time, a region with a relatively high level of energy poverty, it can be considered a good example for illustrating the research problem. To achieve the goal, surveys were carried out covering 519 farms. Upon the consideration of a literature review and the research results of other authors, the collected opinions of the owners of these farms regarding the motivators encouraging them to invest in renewable energy technologies and the assessment of the role of the state in supporting energy transformation allowed for the formulation of conclusions. The research results indicate that renewable energy technologies are present in 47% of the surveyed farms, while in 36% of them, investments were financed from farmers' own funds. This means that the possibility of obtaining support from public funds is not a necessary condition for implementing renewable energy investments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change, changes in the natural environment, changing markets, price volatility, etc. pose tension and threats to the future of European Union farms. The uncertain future of family farms requires farm resilience—the ability to survive, adapt, and grow in the face of turbulent change. The limited resilience of family farms has become an important concern for rural and agricultural policy. The main goal of this work is to identify disturbances affecting Lithuanian family farms, assess their influence, investigate the general resilience of Lithuanian family farms, propose measures to reduce the vulnerability of farms, and increase the general resilience and sustainability. We used a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to conduct the research. Survey research was conducted using a semi-structured expert interview in which various types of variables were collected. The survey questionnaire, consisting of 38 groups of questions, was sent by email to 500 randomly selected family farmers in January 2024 and collected in the same month. The statistical analysis of the data from the 205 duly filled-out questionnaires was carried out using correlation analysis. In this article, we apply the concept of general resilience of the family farm in the direction of robustness, adaptability, and transformability. We identify the main factors influencing the general resilience of the family farm and study the main attributes of the resilience of family farms. We find some links between family farm characteristics, vulnerability factors, and general resilience capabilities, and we make several proposals to increase family farms' resilience. The obtained results prove that higher education, larger farm sizes, higher agricultural sales, and employment of permanent workers are associated with better resilience. Furthermore, increasing environmentally friendly practices positively impacts resilience. Older farms and farmers, longer durations of farming activity, and risk-averse behaviors tend to decrease resilience. Due to local and global circumstances, economic and social changes have occurred very quickly in recent years, so the results obtained in the study may not be valid in the long term. Similar surveys after several years will be necessary to study the resilience of Lithuanian farms, including deeper economic analyses that evaluate factors such as price sensitivity, the level of farm debt, and market access. This paper analyzes the operating efficiency of various types of family farms in economically under-developed hilly areas, finds out the existing problems and puts forward suggestions to promote the healthy development of family farms. Taking 591 family farms in Bazhong City as an example, this paper uses the input-oriented BCC model to measure and decompose the operating efficiency of planting, breeding and planting-breeding family farms. The results show that the comprehensive technical efficiency and pure technical efficiency of family farms have great room for improvement; breeding family farms have the highest comprehensive technical efficiency of 0.659, planting the lowest; the pure technical efficiency of planting and planting-breeding family farms is low, 0.628 and 0.602 respectively. The scale efficiency gap among the three types of family farms is small, and the scale efficiency is high. Farmers should be guided to participate in technical training to improve technical efficiency, especially planting technical efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to study the factors influencing the willingness of family farms to adopt green agricultural technology, we looked at survey results from six prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu Province. Cluster stratification and the Logit model were used to empirically analyze the level of desire and influencing factors related to the adoption of agricultural technology by family farmers. The study found that family farmers tend to choose improved seed technology, water-saving irrigation technology, high-efficiency pesticide spray technology, and soil testing formula fertilization technology. This decision is closely related to crop growth, capital endowment, and other factors affecting the selection of technology by farmers. It is also related to variables such as market economic returns and surrounding social networks. Based on this, suggestions are made to improve the land transfer system, implement the occupational farmers' cultivation plan, create a good market environment, and optimize the social network resources available to farmers. Agricultural producers are entities that largely decide on the structure of the agri-food supply chain. Currently, the European Union is striving to shorten supply chains in agriculture, as short supply chains are ecologically, economically and socially more sustainable. The main objective of the paper is to examine the role of primary producers in the agri-food supply chains. The basic technique applied for data collection was questionnaire survey, which we carried out on family farms in Slovakia. Obtained data were statistically examined applying the statistical analysis using the Chi-square test. Based on the estimations, we could conclude that the choice of the main distribution channel depends on the size of the given company and also on the main type of production. Businesses with fewer than 10 employees prefer direct distribution channels that allow them to sell their products to final consumers. The identification of factors affecting the choice of the main distribution channel as well as a detailed analysis of the nature of dependence make it possible to formulate recommendations on what steps to take in order to increase the number of agricultural enterprises selling through short supply chains.

The efficient use of labour input is essential to the success of farms; however, many countries are experiencing a decreasing family workforce on-farm as a result of perceived labour intensive work and poor work–life balance. Four farms identified from two labour time-use studies were selected as case studies to investigate management of the family dairy farm in terms of herd size, while also meeting the labour requirements and maintaining a satisfactory work–life balance. A mixed methods approach was used; quantitative analysis described the labour profile and characteristics of the farms, while the qualitative interviews provided insights into strategies to achieve labour efficiency. The results demonstrate that a family farm with a herd size of ∼120 cows with appropriate facilities and streamlined practices can operate effectively with a total labour input of 2,986 h/yr. The labour contributed by the farmer and the farm family represented 77.5% of the total annual labour requirement. Contractors or hired employees contributed the remaining labour input, depending on individual circumstances. The annual average working day length for the farmer (excluding breaks) was 7.8 h/d. The analysed narratives of the farmers demonstrated their view that a seasonal, pasture-based spring calving system of production is a key influence in achieving relatively high labour efficiency on-farm, if it is ensured that the peak workload in spring is managed effectively. The study highlights that the overall labour demand can be reduced on Irish family farms through the management of facilities and practices. The farmer and family members can then decide on the degree of self-sufficiency with regard to labour, that is, what proportion of that labour they wish to contribute based on their lifestyle choices, cost and availability of contractors and hired workers.

At present, China's rural water resources are in short supply and the water pollution situation is severe. Family farms are an important part of China's agricultural modernization, and their development level is an important indicator to measure the degree of modernization of a country and a region. The application of agricultural Internet of Things technology in the field of agriculture is helpful for solving the problem of water shortage in family farms in water shortage areas. Based on questionnaire data, this paper used structural equation modeling (SEM) to study the relationship between family farm water financing willingness and behavior. The results showed that the standardization coefficients of Assumption 1, Assumption 2 and Assumption 3 were 0.332, 0.267 and 0.311, respectively. It can be seen that the water resource financing willingness of family farms was greatly affected by their water-saving technology ability, water management ability and government policy support. However, the standardization coefficient of Assumption 5 was 0.087. It can be seen that the water management capacity had no significant impact on the water resource financing behavior, and the water resource financing behavior of family farms was mainly affected by their water-saving technical capacity and government policy support. This study examines the effects of different intrinsic and extrinsic-to-potential successors' factors on the willingness of potential successors of family farms to continue training in the future. Building on socioemotional wealth (SEW) theory and a knowledge-based view, we consider the potential successors' (yet students in agricultural schools) perspectives, and conceptually and empirically examine whether they believe intrinsic factors, namely, their own personal interest and willingness to create a new business, as well as extrinsic factors, namely, confidence in farm viability and the fact that they have been instituted as successors, influence their willingness to continue training in the future. Our unique data on 156 students enrolled in agricultural schools in Catalonia (Spain) reveal that while intrinsic factors increase potential successors' tendency toward continuous training, extrinsic ones, contrary to our expectations, do not. These findings address an important practical issue in terms of family farm successors' perceptions, offering contributions to agriculture, family business in general, and family firm succession literature in particular. As one of the new agricultural business subjects, family farms are the main force behind the development of agriculture and the leader of agricultural modernization in China. At present, the development of family farms in Inner Mongolia is on the rise, but there are still many problems, so it is crucial to evaluate the development of family farms to find out the problems for targeted development. In this paper, first, after double-screening objective data of family farm development evaluation indexes through the combination of the gray correlation degree and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, we constructed an index system for evaluating family farm development including 19 indexes, such as whether to register a business license. Second, based on the index system constructed in the previous step, the index weight vector was measured using the AHP–entropy weight method, which reflects the cognitive experience of experts, while taking into account the objective laws of data. Next, based on the index weight, the scores of 755 family farms were calculated to measure the level of development of family farms, and the ratings were divided into three categories based on the scores using K-mean cluster analysis. The study found that: (1) The weight of the indicator on the rank of the new professional farmer was 0.102, ranking first; the weight of the indicator on whether the children of the person in charge have the intention to engage in farming and animal husbandry was 0.091, ranking second; and the weight of the indicator on the number of basic production facilities and necessary machinery and equipment was 0.088, ranking third. (2) The highest score of 755 family farms in Inner Mongolia was only 50.161 points, and the overall development of family farms was at an average level. Purpose: The objective of this work was to quantify and understand the impacts of intensive pig production at family-farm level. A case study from the west of Santa Catarina State was used to identify adverse issues (hotspots) of pig production by integrating the assessment of the environmental, economic, and social aspects of the system. The quantitative and qualitative indicators calculated can guide and support the decision-making processes for a variety of stakeholders and actors. Methods: The environmental performance of the pig production system was assessed from cradle-to-farm gate using environmental Life Cycle Assessment methodology set out in ISO 14040 (ISO 2006a). The functional unit (FU) was 1 kg of Liveweight (kg-LW). The structure of the Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) was based on Neugebauer et al. (J Clean Prod 102:165–176, 2015) and Chen and Holden (J Clean Prod 172:1169–1179, 2018), who proposed a tiered framework to evaluate the impacts on the environmental, social, and financial aspects of a product. The economic dimension or Life Cycle Cost (Hunkeler et al. in Environmental life cycle costing. Crc Press, London, 2008) focused on farm-level activities. The social impact was calculated based on the UNEP/SETAC (2009) guidelines. Results and discussion: The environmental performance of the finishing pig production was slightly lower than reference value for climate impacts, acidification, and eutrophication. The economic impacts tended to be positive, reflecting the efforts of the farmer and employee to maintain high productivity and reduce the number of pig losses in comparison with the reference values. However, this effort did not result in greater profitability, causing low farm income. The impacts of low profitability were not transferred to the employee since the wage were above the reference value. There is a need for more education for small farmers, which is known to have a positive correlation with the adoption of new technologies, thus reducing adverse environmental and social impacts and increasing economic return. Conclusions: The interaction of social and economic factors suggests it is unlikely that the farm can achieve better environmental performance. The limited economic return and low level of education have a negative impact on the farmer's capacity to adopt new technologies to improve environmental outcomes. The use of LCSA, based on a consistent model across the three aspects of sustainability, made it possible to understand the interaction of these factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generating electricity from renewable energy instead of fossil fuels brings great benefits to the environment and sustainable development. Thus, assessing the potential of wind and solar energy in agricultural coastal areas can identify sustainable energy solutions for meeting energy demand and producing fresh water for agricultural applications and domestic use. However, it is difficult to accurately assess the wind and solar energy potential in Libya due to the civil war, lack of measured data, and its limited availability. Consequently, this concise work is unique because it is the first to use daily measurement data from Az-Zāwiyah, Libya, for evaluating wind and solar energy based on one year of measured data for 2022. Moreover, the present study aims to investigate the potential of wind and solar energy as promising renewable sources for meeting energy demand in coastal agricultural regions in Libya using multiple datasets for the first time. In this paper, five satellite products (TerraClimate, ERA5, ERA5-Land, MERRA-2, and CFSR) were assessed and compared against measured data for January 2022–December 2022 to understand their suitability, accuracy, and reliability. The results showed that CFSR and ERA5-Land demonstrate the most favorable performance for assessing the wind resource, while all satellite products can be utilized for preliminary solar resource assessment. Then, the assessment of wind and solar resources was evaluated in five agricultural coastal regions (Aljmail, Az-Zāwiyah, Castelverde, Msallatah, and Sabratah) based on the best satellite product for the period of 2000–2022. Furthermore, the performance of the wind and solar power systems was investigated for typical farms, which were chosen to estimate the required energy demand according to daily electrical consumption. The results show that the positive outcomes of implementing these systems were highlighted, with an emphasis on their potential benefits to the entire Libyan agricultural sector. Accordingly, scaling up and generalizing the proposed systems and generalizing them to include all farms in Libya could have a significant impact on national electricity generation, mitigate greenhouse gases, and contribute to the development of the agricultural sector and the country's economy. In the digital transformation era led by 5G, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other digital technologies, rural e-commerce promotes the development of family farms with advanced digital technologies to achieve economies of scale in agriculture. To this end, we analyze the influence of rural e-commerce agglomeration on family farms using fixed effects, GMM, the spatial Durbin model, and the mediating effects model based on an urban panel dataset in the Yangtze River Delta region of China from 2015 to 2020. The main outcomes show that (1) rural e-commerce agglomeration helps expand family farms, and there is a positive spatial spillover effect, (2) the greater the city's scale and amount of human capital, the greater the effect of Rural e-commerce agglomeration on family farms, and (3) rural e-commerce agglomeration contributes to the development of family farms through the knowledge overflow effect, infrastructure sharing effect and matching labor effect. The findings from this study's research help improve the development planning of rural e-commerce, explore the driving force of digital agricultural transformation, and provide valuable references for other countries and regions to cultivate family farms. Various policies have been implemented to encourage the development of family farms and cooperatives in the past decade in China. New technology adoption is a crucial part in promoting the performance of family farms. However, empirical evidence on whether and how cooperatives would facilitate family farms to adopt new technologies remains unclear. To address the gap, this paper examines the impact of family farms' cooperative membership on new technology adoption (i.e., new varieties, new machinery, new fertilizers, new pesticides, new pest control techniques, new production methods and new management methods). Using novel survey data from 848 family farms in China, and employing both propensity score matching approach and endogenous switching probit model, we find that for family farms, cooperative membership has positive and significant impacts on new technology adoption. When looking into different types of technology, we find that the impacts are larger on the adoption of new methods than new techniques. Moreover, the impacts are larger for family farms with lower operation income and smaller size. The purpose of this study was to investigate the preferences of Romanian consumers when purchasing agri-food products, with a focus on products from family farms, and to identify pathways for promoting family farms' outputs for enhancing the development of rural areas and the local economy. For this, a survey was carried out using a questionnaire as the main tool. Firstly, the data collected were analysed from a descriptive point of view. Then, multiple linear regression and the chi-square test were used to determine the relationships between variables, and ANOVA was used to identify significant differences between groups. The results revealed that consumers with a higher level of education are more confident in certified products and are better informed, with a greater ability to distinguish certified from non-certified products through logos. Finally, the results indicate an opportunity for family farms to sell their products for a higher price within a secure market, mainly in urban areas. However, for this to happen, it is necessary to implement a quality scheme, highlighting the origin and originality of the product (product obtained from a family farm, including logo) coupled with awareness campaigns on the advantages that this product has, both for the consumer and the farmer or the region it comes from. Agricultural labor productivity is an important indicator that reflects the sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas. Demonstration farms provide an important link between small-scale farmers and modern agriculture in mountainous area of western China, which is playing an important role in improving labor productivity. This paper focuses on using the PSM-logit model and sensitivity analysis to empirically test the causal relationship between demonstration farms and labor productivity, and a micro-large sample of 1823 family farms was adopted. The highlighted findings are as follows: the average labor productivity of the demonstration farm is 2.8 times higher than that of the non-demonstration farm. There is a significant positive correlation between demonstration farms and labor productivity. Utilizing demonstration farms, when all control variables are added, can remarkably promote farm income by CNY301458 on average. In the matched sample, and under scenarios controlling for other covariates, we saw that demonstration farms can significantly enhance the farm income of CNY285108, CNY288509, and CNY291077 on average, respectively, after taking the radius matching, the kernel matching, and the nearest neighbor matching. The research inspired us to enhance the demonstrative establishment of family farms and accelerate the rate at which comprehensive development benefits are derived from demonstration farms. The results of this research could provide a policy reference for the promotion of high-quality development and the sustainable development of family farms in China and serve as an experience reference for promoting sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas globally. The application of smart agriculture is increasingly becoming a critical force in transforming the traditional methods of agricultural production in China. This change, based on technological innovation, is essential to promoting a sustainable production system in family farms. This study is based on the resource orchestration theory to investigate how smart agriculture affects the diversity of green production technologies (GPTs) on family farms. Based on a sample of 563 family farms surveyed in 2022, this study utilizes propensity score matching (PSM) methods and instrumental variables to analyze the effect of smart-agriculture adoption on the diversity of GPTs on farms. The findings reveal that smart agriculture has significantly increased the diversity of GPTs on farms by 8.5%. Network consulting services, value-added products, and environmental monitoring services are potential impact mechanisms underlying the positive effects of smart agriculture on the diversity of GPTs on farms. Furthermore, the increased diversity of GPTs is more significant on purely plantation farms, farms without contract farming, and farms with high levels of mechanization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of increasingly severe resource and environmental constraints, accelerating family farms to take the path of green agricultural development is an urgent practical problem to be solved. The bancassurance interaction, an innovative form of financial support policy for agriculture, can effectively alleviate the risks and credit rationing problems faced by family farms in the operation process, provide new opportunities for green production of family farms, and is of great significance to promoting sustainable agricultural development. This study uses data from 564 planting family farms in Shaanxi Province to analyze the impact of the bancassurance interaction on adopting green production technology in family farms and its mechanism, paying particular attention to the heterogeneous effects of the family life cycle and family economic level. The results of this study show that the bancassurance interaction has a significant positive impact on the adoption of green production technology by family farms. Compared with agricultural credit and insurance, the effect of the bancassurance interaction on adopting green production technologies is more evident. The analysis of the impact mechanism shows that the bancassurance interaction can promote the adoption of green production technology in family farms through three channels: increasing investment in agricultural production, expanding the scale of land management, and strengthening exchanges of green technology. Among them, the effect of increasing agrarian production investment is the most pronounced. The heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of the bancassurance interaction on the green production technology of family farms varies significantly according to the family life cycle and economic level. Family farms at the dependency stage and low-income level were more willing to adopt green production technologies driven by the bancassurance interaction. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously innovate the interaction mode between banks and insurance companies, rationally allocating agricultural production factors and combining the actual situation of each family farm to strengthen the leading role of the bancassurance interaction in adopting green production technologies and promoting high-quality agricultural development. This study aims to investigate how small family farms, lacking direct support from advisory services, cope with challenges including access constraints to resources, and enhance their resilience. Investigations conducted in the wilaya of Blida, Algeria, through surveys of 17 input suppliers and citrus growers, revealed how the institutional context, particularly that of private agricultural 241 advisory, incentivizes farms to adopt hyper-intensive agriculture by using more agro-chemicals. Indeed, the arrival of input suppliers into the agricultural advisory landscape has resulted in socio-economic differentiation between farms, with small and most vulnerable farms resisting these intensive models. The results show that even if these small farms face difficulties in existing in the face of the big ones supported by the institutional environment, particularly the private sector, resilience factors have been identified that enable these farms to resist to the steamroller of the intensive model: solidarity between small family farms, pluriactivity, and taking advantage of some state support measures and the public-private partnership of farm advisory services.

This study aimed to identify the development of new food products related to family farming from scientific and technological perspectives. Data were collected from the scientific literature and patent documents in the Scopus and National Institute of Industrial Property databases, using a combination of terms, such as "family farm* OR small-hold farm* OR agricultur* farm* labor OR farm* size OR peasant farm* OR agriculture* food* product* AND food* product*". The asterisk (*) denotes a truncation character used in articles and patent databases to perform a search using multiple terms with the same root but different suffixes. A total of 716 articles and 532 patents were identified. The data from the scientific articles provide an overview of family farming participation in the development of food products and how products that are developed by family farmers resonate with society. The patent documents found showed the development of innovative production technologies, such as machines and production methods to improve the quality of the products sold by family farmers. Therefore, there is great potential for family farming foods to advance in this technological area, with the prospect of increasing publications and new patent applications related to this subject. The family business in the livestock sector of Bulgaria is represented by market-oriented, family farms, which we consider as open systems. In them, through the production of animal products, not only the needs of the owner and his family are satisfied, but mainly the animal products are intended for market realization. The aim is to reveal the main features of the family livestock farm with a market orientation, specialized in the production of sheep products, based on the results of our own empirical research of selected typical family farms in Bulgaria. This study aimed to analyze the perceptions of directors of state schools in Campo Grande, MS, about the National School Feeding Program (NSFP) law and about products purchased from family farming. The case of Campo Grande’s state schools was analyzed from the approach of Economic Sociology, using the concept of embeddedness. To achieve the goal, a semi-structured interview guide was formulated. A total of 73 directors from Campo Grande’s state schools were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed by the content analysis method through thematic categorical analysis. Twenty-four were associated with negative perceptions to NSFP’s law, giving rise to the construction of five major categories: Bureaucracy, Lack of Organization of Family Farming, Government Negligence, The Values Passed and Others. Positively there were 14 perceptions associated to NSFP’s law that gave rise to the construction of four major categories: Administrative Decentralization, Quality, Economically Positive and Socially Positive. It shows the predominance of negative perceptions of the NSFP’ law and that state schools of Campo Grande have difficulties to comply with the law in its entirety, pointing out that the objectives of the law in relation to school executions are still far from being achieved. Is an agricultural corporation more efficient than a traditional family farm? This paper attempts to answer this question by examining the technical and allocative efficiency of family farms and agricultural corporations. To do so, it applies the stochastic production frontier method in panel data built on the family farms and agricultural corporations in the Japanese rice sector and focuses on comparing the technical and allocative efficiency of the two production forms at the same scale of operation. Results reveal that family farms have a significant advantage over agricultural corporations in technical efficiency at each level of scale of operation. In both production forms, as the scale of operation increases, the technical efficiency correspondingly rises. However, the disparity in technical efficiency diminishes between the two production forms as their land size increases. In contrast, the allocative efficiency of different factors differs between family farms and agricultural corporations at different scales of land size. Overall, family farms show superiority in the allocative efficiency of labour, and agricultural corporations exhibit superiority in the allocative efficiency of agricultural capital. Last, decomposition of total productivity progress (TFP) reveals that family farms have positive TFP change which is mainly attributable to a positive and large allocative component, while agricultural corporations undergo negative TFP change due to its negative and large allocative component.
