Since the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) approved its new policy in July 2021 to allow collegiate athletes to monetize their names, images, and likenesses (NIL), most of the focus on this change has revolved around which universities and sports benefit or suffer from the changes. What has not been discussed as much (perhaps understandably) is what the possible transfer tax implications could be with respect to these NIL payments, especially when athletes may use these payments to take care of family and friends. It is common in contemporary sport to liken the notion of the team to that of the family. That is, the family is used to evoke team life. Portraying the team as a family usually implies a positive evaluation. Despite its prevalence, the team as a family equation has not been analyzed in the sport philosophy literature. Thus, the purpose of this article is twofold. First, it explores whether the team is to be equated with the family. To discuss the nature of the family and the team, I draw together the work of several sport philosophers with that of Laura Wildemann Kane. Second, and considering what characterizes the team, this article investigates whether teammates have special responsibilities to one another by virtue of their relationship and the value attached to it. I propose that the team as a family equation does not align with the constitution of these two social groups and that teammates have special responsibilities to one another, but such responsibilities are different from those observed in the family. The onset of retirement and children leaving the family home may offer a "window of opportunity" for individuals to influence regular moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity; therefore, this study examines the feasibility of a moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity intervention among recently retired participants (RET) and parents (P) with children who recently left the family home. A total of 46 inactive RET and nine inactive P were randomized to a 10-week web intervention (n = RET = 25/P = 4) or waitlist control (n = RET = 21/P = 5). Intervention techniques followed the multiprocess action control framework. Enrollment (37.5% for P; 40% for RET), retention (89% for P; 83% for RET), and satisfaction were high. One hundred percent of intervention-sectioned participation increased moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity compared with 52% of controls; large effect size differences were observed for key multiprocess action control constructs. Participants were highly satisfied with the intervention; however, recruitment challenges of P support moving to a randomized controlled trial for only the RET group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines consumer wisdom and well-being in family life. Drawing on Luchs et al. (2021), it specifically examines how consumer wisdom develops and is transmitted in intergenerational interactions via consumption. Qualitative data was gathered via twenty long interviews with Moroccan grandmothers and eleven long interviews with their teen/adult grandchildren. The data analysis uncovers how wisdom interacts with intrapersonal, interpersonal, and extrapersonal well-being in families. First, it examines how grandmothers develop and transmit their wisdom to their grandchildren through intergenerational interactions embedded in consumption. Second, it shows how grandmothers manifest wisdom as they balance their well-being. Finally, the study provides a novel perspective on grandchildren's development of wisdom. This study extends our knowledge about the complexity of consumer wisdom and how wisdom contributes to well-being. Parents of children and youth with disabilities (CYD) have expressed unique physical activity (PA) information needs. Community-based organizations (CBOs) require assistance to meet these needs. Guided by the Appraisal of Guidelines, Research and Evaluation II, this project established evidence-informed recommendations for developing PA information targeting families of CYD. This process involved a systematic scoping review to inform draft recommendations (k = 23), which were revised via a consensus meeting with researchers, knowledge users from CBOs, and families of CYD. Broader consultation with CBO knowledge users informed the final recommendations (k = 5) that fit within the following categories: (a) language and definitions, (b) program information, (c) benefits of PA, (d) barriers to PA, and (e) PA ideas and self-regulation tools. CBOs are encouraged to consider these recommendations when developing PA information for families of CYD. BACKGROUND: Prior research has consistently shown that the involvement of families plays a vital role in reducing risk behaviors, such as engaging in condomless sex, and promoting HIV prevention behaviors among young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM). With the aim of expanding the existing knowledge, this study aimed to examine the specific influence of families and other supportive adults in facilitating casual condom use, partner condom use, HIV testing, and preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) utilization among young Black MSM. METHODS: A sample of YBMSM aged 18-29 years (N = 400) was collected online. We used a path analysis to examine the influence of family factors on PrEP stigma and PrEP use. Respondents were recruited from December 1, 2021, to January 31, 2022. We used a path analysis to examine the direct and indirect effects of family factors on PrEP use through HIV testing and encouraging condom use. A comprehensive evaluation of physical activity (PA) engagement and policy implementation among Filipino children and adolescents with disabilities is vital in the promotion of an active healthy lifestyle. This is the first Para Report Card of the Philippines that presents the available evidence on the 10 commonly used PA indicators. Published and gray literature were searched for country-specific evidence on PA behaviors, physical fitness, and sources of influence. Stakeholders representing relevant national institutions, special education schools, and advocacy groups also provided input on the grades. Only Organized Sport and Government indicators had sufficient data to be graded F and B, respectively. The rest of the indicators were graded as incomplete due to the limited availability of nationally representative data. Findings of the Philippines 2022 Para Report Card on PA highlight the need to strengthen the documentation and evaluation of these indicators among Filipino children and adolescents with disabilities. This is an overview of the results from 14 countries or jurisdictions in a Global Matrix of Para Report Cards on physical activity (PA) of children and adolescents with disabilities. The methodology was based on the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance's Global Matrix 4.0. Data were aligned with 10 indicators (Overall PA, Organized Sport, Active Play, Active Transport, Physical Fitness, Sedentary Behavior, Family & Peers, Schools, Community & Environment, and Government) to produce Para Report Cards. Subsequently, there were 139 grades; 45% were incomplete, particularly for Active Play, Physical Fitness, and Family & Peers. Collectively, Overall PA was graded the lowest (F), with Schools and Government the highest (C). Disability-specific surveillance and research gaps in PA were apparent in 14 countries or jurisdictions around the world. New parties are a key mechanism behind party system innovation as voters are offered new choices. To explain party entry (i.e. participation in a lower house election for the first time), the state-of-the-art has typically focused on domestic determinants. This, however, assumes that party entry takes place in an international vacuum. Building on the policy diffusion literature, we explore how party family members abroad influence party entry in the focal country. Based on a new dataset on the evolution of each party family in 17 Western European party systems between 1961 and 2016, including 2191 new parties, our mixed-methods approach combining spatial econometric models with pathway case analysis demonstrates that party entry is influenced by the entry and electoral success of their party family abroad. Objective: To examine risky leisure noise exposure from listening to music via headphones and to identify potential determinants with special focus on portable listening devices (PLDs) among adolescents over a period of 7.5-years. Design: Data were collected by questionnaires at four equidistant time points (O1-O4). Music exposure via headphones was calculated based on self-reported volume setting and listening duration. Exceeding 85 dB(A) equivalent for a 40-hour working week was defined as risky noise exposure. Determinants of risky headphone and PLD exposure were investigated using generalised estimating equations and accounting for missing data by multiple imputation. Study sample: Closed cohort of 2148 students attending 9th grade of any secondary school type in Regensburg (Germany), during 2009 to 2011. Results: Risky noise exposure from headphone usage was almost twice as high in wave O1 and O2 (at age 15 or 18) compared with 20–23-year-olds in O3 and O4. Risky exposure to headphones and PLDs were associated with younger age, low and medium education, single-parent household and smoking, whereas good self-rated hearing showed a protective effect. Additionally, not being born in Germany was associated with risky PLD exposure. Conclusion: Before harmful behaviours become entrenched, starting preventive efforts at a young age is essential. This article discusses family language policy and the tensions between mothers' and children's language beliefs in two Vietnamese immigrant families in Melbourne. These tensions have frequently been discussed from the parental perspective, but it is less common to include the children's voice. We draw on a larger in-depth qualitative study of family language policy in Vietnamese families living in Australia to explore the language beliefs of both children and adults. Employing Fitzsimmons-Doolan's [2018. "Language Ideology Change Over Time: Lessons for Language Policy in the U.S. State of Arizona and Beyond." Findings reveal the pro-monolingual stance of the children in opposition to the pro-multilingual stance of their mothers where the children and their mothers appeared to attach different degrees of value to English and Vietnamese. This study explored the family language policy, bilingual parenting profiles, and the predictors among Chinese parents in Singapore. Altogether 175 parents of Chinese-English bilingual preschoolers (aged 2;6–5;6) were sampled and surveyed. The research results indicated that: (1) a majority of the parents (93.7%) believed in early bilingualism but differed in their beliefs about the appropriate starting age for early bilingualism; (2) two latent profiles of bilingual parenting emerged: Radical Bilingual Parenting (n = 91, 52.00%, bilingual reading activities from Age 2, longer hours of bilingual parent–child conversation); Moderate Bilingual Parenting (84, 48.00%, bilingual reading activities after Age 3, shorter hours of bilingual parent–child conversation); and (3) child's age, their preschool education experience, and parents' belief about the appropriate age to start early bilingualism predicted the profile of bilingual parenting. Fertility problems, often called infertility, have been defined as the inability to conceive or maintain pregnancy throughout one year of trying (World Health Organization, 2020). Because fertility problems can present unique medical, emotional, relational, and identity challenges, they are often difficult to talk about, and even well-intentioned messages can be perceived negatively. This study uses Communicated Sense-Making (CSM; Kellas & Kranstuber Horstman, 2015), particularly its mechanism of memorable messages, to explore what types of support-related messages people experiencing infertility find memorable. Results from semi-structured interviews (N = 54) indicate five supra-themes of memorable messages: (a) communicating solidarity; (b) attempting to minimize participants' stress; (c) communicating investment or interest in the patient's experience; (d) sharing expertise; and (e) absolving the patient of responsibility; we identify several sub-themes within each. We also explore patterns between message types, senders, and message valence: message themes were perceived as either positive, negative, or neutral based on the combination of sender and perceived intention. Care provider communication with Black birthing families is impactful. This cross-sectional study asked 216 Black fathers to recall treatment by birthing care providers and tested variables contributing to birth satisfaction and fathering identity salience. Most fathers reported that care providers were respectful resulting in a positive birthing experience; however, 15% reported negative experiences with care providers. Perceived social support was shown to be a mediator between disrespect, mistreatment, inclusive communication, trust, and positive emotion with birth satisfaction and fathering identity salience. Care provider disrespect served as a "spoiler" of the birthing experience and subsequently diminished positive fathering identity salience. Analysis of open-ended comments showed that contrary to stereotypes about absent, disengaged Black fathers, fathers in this study were caring toward their newborns, present for them, and engaged in fathering. More work needs to be done with care provider communication to make every birth a positive and inclusive experience for Black fathers and their partners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although caregiving responsibilities and need for support persist and evolve across the life course in families with autistic youth or youth with other developmental disabilities (DDs), little is known about support during their child's adulthood years. Therefore, the present study used a mixed-methods approach to examine change and stability in formal and informal family support across the transition to adulthood. Caregivers of 126 individuals with autism or DDs completed a modified version of the Family Support Scale, including open-ended questions, at five time points from adolescence (age 16) into young adulthood (age 22). Caregivers reported that informal support from family members was the most frequently used, helpful, and valued source of support with relative stability across time. In contrast, the reported helpfulness, use, and value of formal support (e.g., professionals, schools) for caregivers declined over time. Qualitative content analyses revealed characteristics of highly valued support included support type (e.g., instrumental or emotional) and features of the support source (e.g., their understanding). There was a shift to valuing emotional support more than instrumental support over time, especially for caregivers of less able adults. Partnership and dependability emerged as highly valued features of the support source. These findings fit within a social convoy perspective and likely reflect the "service cliff" experienced by autistic individuals or people with DDs and their families. As social networks shrink over time and formal services are less readily available in adulthood, remaining sources of support, particularly from family members, become increasingly important. Introduction: Initiation of breastfeeding right after birth and exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life is highly recommended. In this survey, we assessed the knowledge and practice of ever-married women towards early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding in the Nuristan province of Afghanistan. Methods: In a cross-sectional household survey, we enrolled 640 ever-married 15–49 years women having a child aged 0–23 months in the Parun district of Nuristan province from September to October 2021. Using a standardized data collection form and face-to-face interview, we measured self-reported demographic characteristics and the study outcomes (awareness and practice towards the initiation of breastfeeding within an hour of birth and exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life). We analyzed the data using survey methods and used bivariate and multiple Poisson regression to assess the covariates of the study outcomes. Results: About 46.9% of ever-married women were 25–34 years old, 67.5% never attended school, 30.4% were unemployed, and 86.4% had < $60 monthly income. Overall, 56.8% (95% CI 52.9–60.6) of the women had correct knowledge of the early initiation of breastfeeding, and 51.4% (95% CI 47.5–55.3) initiated breastfeeding early for their last baby. Also, 85.9% (95% CI 82.9–88.4) of the women had correct knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding, but only 32.6% (95% CI 29.1–36.4) exclusively breastfed their last baby for 6 months after birth. After adjustment for covariates, women who were 45–49 years old (Adjusted Prevalence Ratio [APR] = 1.26), Divorced/Separated (APR 1.68), ever attended school (APR 1.39), monthly income > $115 (APR 1.50) were more likely to start early breastfeeding. Moreover, women who were Divorced/Separated (APR 3.53) were more likely to exclusively breastfeed their babies for 6 months after birth. Discussion: Only over half of the women were aware of and initiated early breastfeeding. Although most women knew about exclusive breastfeeding, less than one-third exclusively breast their babies for 6 months after birth. We found several contributing factors, such as age, marital status, education, and income that should be considered for targeted interventions. Significance: Understanding the knowledge and practices of mothers towards knowledge and practices of exclusive breastfeeding will help social and behavior change, health and nutrition experts and public health practitioners design evidence based projects and interventions to reduce prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting in the community. Introduction: Discharge "against medical advice" (AMA) in the obstetric population is overall under-studied but disproportionally affects marginalized populations and is associated with worse perinatal outcomes. Reasons for discharges AMA are not well understood. The objective of this study is to identify the obstacles that prevent obstetric patients from accepting recommended care and highlight the structural reasons behind AMA discharges. Methods: Electronic health records of patients admitted to antepartum, peripartum, or postpartum services between 2008 and 2018 who left "AMA" were reviewed. Progress notes from clinicians and social workers were extracted and analyzed. Reasons behind discharge were categorized using qualitative thematic analysis. Results: Fifty-seven (0.12%) obstetric patients were discharged AMA. Reasons for discharge were organized into two overarching themes: extrinsic (50.9%) and intrinsic (40.4%) obstacles to accepting care. Eleven participants (19.3%) had no reason documented for their discharge. Extrinsic obstacles included childcare, familial responsibilities, and other obligations. Intrinsic obstacles included disagreement with provider regarding medical condition or plan, emotional distress, mistrust or discontent with care team, and substance use. Discussion: The term "AMA" casts blame on individual patients and fails to represent the systemic barriers to staying in care. Obstetric patients were found to encounter both extrinsic and intrinsic obstacles that led them to leave AMA. Healthcare providers and institutions can implement strategies that ameliorate structural barriers. Partnering with patients to prevent discharges AMA would improve maternal and infant health and progress towards reproductive justice. Significance: What is Already Known on this Subject?: Obstetric patients who leave "against medical advice (AMA)" have worse perinatal outcomes and often are from marginalized communities. The term, AMA, is also stigmatizing, placing blame on individual decision making rather than systemic barriers to access. Reasons for leaving AMA are not well understood in the obstetric population. What does this Study add?: We reframe the discussion around leaving AMA by describing obstacles in accepting care. Patients experienced both extrinsic and intrinsic obstacles to accepting medical care, from childcare issues to disagreement with treatment plan. Screens have become increasingly prevalent in children's lives. This study examined the longitudinal association between screen time and aggressive behaviour by investigating the mediating and moderating roles of language ability and parenting stress, respectively. The analysed data consisted of 1,319 children, aged 5 to 15, from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. Results found that children's language ability (age 9) significantly mediated the relationship between screen time (age 5) and aggressive behaviour (age 15), and this mediating pathway was significantly moderated by parenting stress (age 5). Furthermore, the moderated mediation pathway was only significant among groups with medium or high parenting stress. Thus, the negative effects of screen time on aggressive behaviour through poor language ability amplified as the level of parenting stress increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Negative communication between partners can impede the enactment of prosocial, relationship maintenance behaviors. These processes are especially critical to consider for Latine young adults who hold cultural values, like familism, which emphasize the great importance of personal relationships. Using a sample of 475 Latine young adults (M = 24.8 years, SD = 3.22), we examined the moderating role of familism on the association between negative communication (e.g., partners' propensity to withdraw or criticize during interactions) and relationship maintenance (e.g., affectionate and supportive efforts to sustain the relationship). We found that negative communication was inversely associated with individuals' own relationship maintenance enactment. However, familism buffered the association between negative communication and relationship maintenance; under conditions of high familism, the association between negative communication and relationship maintenance remained negative, but with a weaker effect than under conditions of low familism. Findings reinforce the negative effects of maladaptive communication in relationships more broadly and highlight the protective role of relationally oriented cultural values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the increasing sophistication of online survey tools and the necessity of distanced research during the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of online questionnaires for research purposes has proliferated. Still, many researchers undertake online survey research without knowledge of the prevalence and likelihood of experiencing survey questionnaire fraud nor familiarity with measures used to identify fraud once it has occurred. This research note is based on the experience of researchers across four sites who implemented an online survey of families' experiences with COVID-19 in the U.S. that was subject to substantial fraud. By the end of data collection, over 70% of responses were flagged as fraudulent with duplicate IP addresses and concurrent start/end times representing the most common indicators of fraud observed. We offer lessons learned to illustrate the sophisticated nature of fraud in online research and the importance of multi-pronged strategies to detect and limit online survey questionnaire fraud. Although structural strategic family therapy (FT) is an evidence-based approach for adolescent behavior problems, manualized family therapy models have not been widely adopted in usual care due to the training and implementation resources required. This article presents a competency framework for utilizing family collaboration with adolescent cases. It begins by discussing challenges to implementing FT in routine care and presents the core elements strategy, then introduces three "branches" that together constitute a continuum of family involvement—family collaboration, family skills training, and systemic family therapy—and describes the rationale and procedures for focusing on competency guidelines for family collaboration specifically. It then describes the basic techniques and competency guidelines for six core elements of family collaboration: family systems outreach, adolescent ecosystem, location of self, goal setting, family participation, caregiver consultation, family session management. It concludes by discussing future directions for this framework and the development of additional competencies for the other branches. While further research is necessary to test the efficacy of the treatment branches and accompanying competency standards, this article presents an innovative approach to involving family members in care that includes accessible competency guidelines. This article examines the gap between the theory and practice of person-centered services for adults with intellectual disabilities in the United States. It explores the rhetoric of personalized services—it gives a history of social care, rehearses the logic of person-centered planning and outlines the tension of conflicting disability policies. Then it defines the nature of choice and explains how limited alternatives undermine choice. Next the article describes the reality of restricted service options, summarizing the conclusions of a survey of American families and a meta-review of the effectiveness of person-centered planning. After recapping the contrast between rhetoric and reality, objections to the analysis are addressed. Finally, the article offers solutions for service system transformation. While the thesis pertains to the United States, its lessons are applicable to other nations. Points of interest: In recent years, supports for adults with intellectual disabilities have been shifting from a system based on what is available from service agencies to an approach that is tailored to individual needs and wants. Choice in services requires having multiple options from which to choose. There is a gap between theory and practice in the United States. Laws and regulations require services based on individual needs and wants, yet in many cases this is not reality. Because of many social factors, people with intellectual disabilities are fit into standard service packages rather than having supports matched to their individual needs and wants. To understand transactional associations between mothers' biological stress responsivity and parenting behaviors, we examined bidirectional effects between maternal cortisol reactivity to observing their children during distress-eliciting paradigms and harsh parenting across infancy and toddlerhood using longitudinal data from the Family Life Project (N = 1,292, 41.5% African American). Children completed a series of distress-eliciting laboratory paradigms when they were 7, 15, and 24 months old, and mothers observed their children during the paradigms. Maternal cortisol reactivity was computed as a residualized change score from baseline to 20 min postparadigm, controlling for the time of day the saliva sample was collected. Harsh parenting was measured using five items from the Home Observation Measurement of the Environment inventory. A random-intercept cross-lagged panel model revealed that increases in maternal cortisol reactivity at 15 months predicted subsequent increases in harsh parenting at 24 months. Similarly, increases in harsh parenting at 15 months predicted increases in maternal cortisol reactivity at 24 months. Findings indicate that increased cortisol reactivity to children's distress in early toddlerhood may indicate a risk for harsh parenting in late toddlerhood and that increases in harsh parenting can also negatively impact mothers' stress physiology over time. Background: Although many health information seeking studies are concerned with longer range outcomes (e.g. patient‐provider communication) the immediate outcomes for the searchers are whether they found the desired information, for whom and how successfully. Objectives: To examine the association between health information seeking via various sources and the reported extent of success in getting the desired information the information needs perspective. Methods: Data were obtained from the 2017 Israel Social Survey and analysed using multinomial regression models. The sample included individuals who reported engaging in seeking health information prior to the survey and mentioned the extent of success in obtaining the desired health information (fully, partially, or not‐at‐all) (N = 2197). Multinominal regression technique served for the multivariable analysis. Discussion: Engagement in health information seeking via friends, family and using various websites (excluding those by Ministry of Health and Health Funds) was associated with the increased likelihood of partial success in getting the desired information. Education level and population group, affected level of success. Conclusions: The (partial) success in meeting health consumers' information needs is associated with the turn to particular sources. Public health professionals and health provider institutions should improve provision and delivery of health information to meet consumer health information needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Anxious irritable youth rated accommodation higher than anxious nonirritable youth. • Irritability moderated the association between their anxiety and accommodation. • Anxiety predicts accommodation more strongly in anxious nonirritable youth. Family accommodation is a significant contributor to the maintenance and course of youth anxiety. There is also high co-occurrence of anxiety and irritability in youth. Research is lacking, however, on the influence of irritability in the association between anxiety and family accommodation, including among youth with clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders. We therefore examined this issue in a sample of clinic-referred anxious irritable and anxious nonirritable youth. Youth (N = 645, M age = 9.86 years, SD = 2.92) and their parents completed diagnostic interviews and questionnaires assessing youth anxiety, irritability, and family accommodation. Based on both youth and parent ratings, family accommodation was significantly and positively associated with youth anxiety and irritability. Anxious irritable youth rated family accommodation significantly higher than anxious nonirritable youth. In addition, youth self-rated irritability levels significantly moderated the association between their anxiety and family accommodation. No moderation effect was found for the parent ratings. Based on the youth ratings, our overall findings show that parents of anxious irritable youth are more accommodating of their children's anxiety, compared with parents of anxious nonirritable youth. Anxiety levels also predict family accommodation more strongly in youth with lower levels of irritability. Our findings provide novel insights about accommodation behaviors in families of anxious irritable youth and suggest its potential utility as a treatment target when working with anxious irritable youth.
