Nanoscale delivery systems have the potential to improve the effectiveness of agrochemicals while reducing their negative environmental impacts. Herein, we explore the use of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) to enhance the translocation of methoxyfenozide (MFZ), a non-systemic pesticide, in soybean plants under hydroponic conditions. LNPs (113.8 ± 3.5 nm and zeta potential – 53.3 ± 6.9 mV) were synthesized by emulsion evaporation from lignin-graft-poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid and MFZ was incorporated into the LNPs (2.7% w/w). Twenty eight day old soybeans were grown hydroponically and were treated with 0.01, 0.1 or 1 mg/ml of LNPs. Plants were harvested after 6, 12, and 24 h of continuous hydroponic exposure to the roots and the concentration of MFZ was quantified in root, stem, and leaf tissues. The results suggest effective and time dependent transfer of MFZ from the hydroponic suspension to the roots, and translocation from the roots to the leaves. MFZ concentrations in the 1 mg/ml treated-plants at 24 h were 519.30, 3.72 and 1.72 μg/g in the roots, stem, and leaves, at 24 h, respectively, as compared to only 28.52, 0.58, 0.39 μg/g in the plants under neat MFZ exposure. The translocation efficiency (TE) of nanodelivered MFZ ranged from 0.06 to 0.08 at 0.01 mg/ml TE, 0.01–0.05 at 0.1 mg/ml, and 0.01–0.006 at 1 mg/ml over 24 h. Even though TE was higher for free MFZ, the concentration and total amount of analyte translocated to the shoots by LNPs were higher than those of free MFZ. In conclusion, LNPs were able to significantly enhance the translocation of non-systemic MFZ from the roots to the soybean aerial tissues in 24 h. This work provides a new platform to enhance the accuracy and precision of pesticide delivery and will be a valuable tool in sustainable nano-enabled agriculture.

Exposure investigations are labor intensive and vulnerable to recall bias. We developed an algorithm to identify healthcare personnel (HCP) interactions from the electronic health record (EHR), and we evaluated its accuracy against conventional exposure investigations. The EHR algorithm identified every known transmission and used ranking to produce a manageable contact list.

Using electronic medical record data and OSOM Trichomonas Rapid Tests, Trichomonas vaginalis prevalence was 9.3% among women attending New York City sexual health clinics in 2016. Positivity was associated with black race (adjusted odds ratios 3.73; 95% confidence interval, 1.9-7.1) and vaginal pH of 4.5 or greater (adjusted odds ratios, 1.9; 95% CI, 1.2-3.3).

This paper assessed characteristics associated with awareness of and willingness to take pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among Baltimore men who have sex with men (MSM). We used data from BESURE-MSM3, a venue-based cross-sectional HIV surveillance study conducted among MSM in 2011. Multivariate regression was used to identify characteristics associated with PrEP knowledge and acceptability among 399 participants. Eleven percent had heard of PrEP, 48% would be willing to use PrEP, and none had previously used it. In multivariable analysis, black race and perceived discrimination against those with HIV were significantly associated with decreased awareness, and those who perceived higher HIV discrimination reported higher acceptability of PrEP. Our findings indicate a need for further education about the potential utility of PrEP in addition to other prevention methods among MSM. HIV prevention efforts should address the link between discrimination and potential PrEP use, especially among men of color.

Impaired dendritic cell (DC) function is thought to be central to human immunodeficiency virus-associated immunodeficiency. In this study, we examined the effect of chronic feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection on DC cytokine production in response to microbial and T-cell stimulation. Cytokine production after either Toll-like receptor (TLR) or CD40 ligation in bone marrow-derived DCs (BM-DCs) was measured in naïve and chronically FIV-infected cats. The BM-DCs were stimulated with ligands to TLR-2, -3, -4, -7 and -9 or cocultured with 3T3 cells expressing feline CD40 ligand. Ligation of TLR-4 and TLR-9 in BM-DCs from infected cats resulted in a significant decrease in the ratio of interleukin-12 (IL-12) to IL-10. Conversely, TLR-7 ligation produced a significant increase in the IL-12 : IL-10 ratio in BM-DCs from infected cats. No difference was noted for TLR-3 ligation. RNA expression levels of TLR-2, -3, -4, -7 and -9 were not significantly altered by FIV infection. CD40 ligation significantly elevated both IL-10 and IL-12 messenger RNA production but did not alter the IL-12 : IL-10 ratio. Chronic FIV infection alters the ratio of immunoregulatory cytokines produced by BM-DCs in response to certain pathogen-derived signals, which is probably relevant to the increased risk of opportunistic infections seen in lentiviral infection.
