Abstract

Denis Smalley's theories of Spectromorphology, Source Bonding, and Bonding Play can help us to understand the malleable relationships between sounds and their perceived sources in the context of electroacoustic music, and how these relationships can enrich and be enriched through their application within audiovisual media. (Smalley, D, 1997) These theories interact with the ideas and practices of composers working within fields such as Sonorism and Soundscape Composition in a way that helps to build the concept of an audiovisual sound canvas, adapted from the definition posited by Julio d'Escrivan's. (d'Escrivan's, J, 2009) A sound canvas in which sounds generated by musical instruments and all manner of 'non-musical' objects and environments may integrate into one aesthetic entity and challenge the conventional distinctions between 'sound' or 'noise' and 'music'. A sound canvas, too, in which the expectations and tensions surrounding the abstract, intrinsic properties of sounds, and their extrinsic links to perceived sources may be reinforced, stretched or broken by way of creating, gratifying and undermining a listener's expectations, thus building and resolving tensions like tonal dissonance and consonance in harmonic music. By weaving such a sound canvas into an audiovisual production one may liberate 'sound' beyond naturalistic representation and bring greater depth to the relationships between sounds and sources via the structured, visual representation of sound-making objects. In turn, such a sound canvas may enrich a visual montage and abolish any hierarchy between audiovisual elements, instead fostering aesthetic unity between 'sound', 'music' and moving image. These ideas are born-out in the portfolio of compositions, which represents the cultivation and realization of this vision in practice.

17. Accuracy of a Newly Developed Guided Dental Implant Delivery System

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a guided dental implant system with one operator comparing the treatment planned location to the actual location using a table top optical scanner. Materials and Methods: Twenty five patients were treated with a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. A stone cast was made of each patient and scanned using an optical table top scanner. The optical scan of the cast and the CBCT of the patient were superimposed and a single implant was placed virtually in the software program. A sterolithographic three dimensional (3D) surgical guide was printed. Implant sites in the patients were prepared using the surgical guides and the final drill to complete the osteotomy and implant placement was done without the guide. Four to six months after implant placement, impressions were made for the final restoration. A scanning body was placed in the master cast, and the scanning of these casts was performed with the same scanner. The overlay of the final working cast and the virtual planning was performed. Differences between actual and planned implant locations were calculated in linear measurement in millimeters and degrees from the center of the implant body at the most coronal and most apical point. Results: 25 cases were evaluated. The average linear deviation at the shoulder and apex of the implant was: 0.68 +/-0.55mm p < 0.001, and 1.47mm +/-0.92mm p < 0.001 respectively. The average deviation in height was -0.06mm +/-1.27mm p= .966. The average angular deviation from the axis was 5.8 +/- 2.41 degrees p< 0.001 The deviation in height is statistically different in the maxilla -0.95 +/- 1.28mm compared to the mandible 0.47 +/- 0.95mm p<.002 with an alpha level of 05. Conclusion: The actual location of the implant compared to the planned location is significantly different at the location of the shoulder, apex and angle. It did not differ significantly in height except when evaluated by arch.

19. Developing mobile applications for and with young people with long-term conditions learning to share their healthcare with professionals: a young person and family-led approach

Abstract

Although young people are frequent users of mobile devices in day-to-day life, there is little reliable research that actually involves young people with long-term conditions as partners in the development and testing of mobile technology applications to support their health needs. However, the transition from child to adult health services means that young people need to develop their own clinical skills and knowledge so that they can manage their condition in a confident and competent manner. Therefore this area of research is ripe for development. A group involving a patient with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), a parent, doctors, nurses, researchers and technologists have established a Manchester-based research and development programme on mobile technologies for young people with long term conditions. We have fostered strong partnerships with other national groups to help us agree on research priorities in this important area, and a plan of work to help us achieve these. First we obtained valuable suggestions from a national group of children and young people with JIA on the types of information and tools they would like to see included in a JIA specific mobile application. Next we are reviewing the research evidence to help us in our future work, and working with young people, parents and health professionals to produce a detailed software specification for a prototype application to test with young people. This poster will explore and discuss the progress we have made, with a focus on the central role of young people and their families living with JIA in the project.

The continuing, rapid growth of the semiconductor industry requires the involvement of several specialized industries in the development of special products geared toward the unique requirements of this new industry. A specialized manufactured diamond to meet various material removal needs was discussed. The area of silicon wafer slicing has presented yet anothr challenge and it is met most effectively. The history, operation, and performance of Man-Made diamond and particularly as applied to silicon wafer slicing is discussed. Product development is underway to come up with a diamond specifically for sawing silicon wafers on an electroplated blade.

Abstract

Soil samples from 79 sites on five islands of Indonesia were baited with insects for the recovery of entomopathogenic nematodes. Heterorhabditis and Steinernema were equally prevalent, and were recovered from 11.7% of samples representing 20.3% of sites sampled. Both genera were recovered from coastal sites only. Entomopathogenic nematodes were more prevalent on the Moluccan islands of Ambon and Seram than on Java or Bali. They were not detected on Sulawesi, where non-coastal sites only were sampled. RFLP analysis was used in the identification of nematode isolates. Heterorhabditis indica was the only heterorhabditid identified. Two RFLP types of Steinernema were identified.

Recent moves in parts of UK to provide opportunities for 'over the counter' purchasing at pharmacies, has meant that access to emergency oral hormonal contraception for adolescents is undergoing something of a revolution. The provision of emergency contraception (EC) to adolescents in Accident and Emergency (A and E) departments, however, is nothing new and is now an established component of the current government objective to reduce teenage pregnancy rates in this country. The tensions apparent in A and E departments related to the provision of EC, particularly to adolescents, have recently been recognized, but little attention has been paid to analysing the reasons why such tensions might exist. This article is based on a literature review carried out as part of a study of nurses' encounters with adolescents accessing EC in A and E departments in the North-west of England. It is a reappraisal of the salient issues in this arena from a feminist perspective, aiming to provide an alternative with which to view the encounter between adolescents and service providers in A and E.
