Soybean meal is the most important protein source in beef cattle feeding. The research of alternative protein sources to replace soy use, avoiding negative effects on in vivo performance and on the product's quality, is an important issue. In this context, cardoon represents a non-OGM resilient crop that can be cultivated in marginal lands for extracting its seed oil (utilized for biodiesel and biodegradable bioplastic production) and whose and the residual meal from its seed oil (utilized for biodiesel and biodegradable bioplastic production) could be a suitable by-product for animal feeding, due to its fairly high protein content. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using cardoon meal as an innovative protein source during the Limousine bulls' fattening period. Thirty-two bulls were divided into two groups and fed with a diet containing soybean meal (SG) or partially replacing soybean meal with cardoon meal as a protein source (CG), respectively. The feeding trial lasted about 11 months. Growth performances and meat physical-chemical traits were evaluated. No statistical differences in feed efficiency, average daily gain, or in the main meat quality indicators, as well as in fatty acid profiles were found among the groups. Therefore, cardoon meal could be considered as an alternative to soybean meal in fattening Limousine bulls in order to enhance the sustainability of the farming system.

High level of PCDD+PCDF contamination in bulk milk (9.7 pg WHO-TE g(-1) fat) from 1604 Holstein Fresian lactacting cows was observed just four weeks after the beginning of their exposure to a feed supplement contaminated at 10.4 ng WHO-TE kg(-1) dry matter. In-farm produced hay and silage showed levels not exceeding 0.2 ng WHO-TE kg(-1) dry matter. After the supplement withdrawal, it was possible to monitor the depletion phase for a following 75-day period in milk, until the levels dropped well below 3.0 pg WHO-TE g(-1) fat, the EU regulatory Maximum Residue Level for PCDD+PCDF. During this phase, the half-life was calculated as 17+/-3 days, on WHO-TEQ basis. The full availability of farm data on both cow nutrition and milk production allowed the calculation of the carry-over rate (COR) (PCDD+PCDF milk excretion vs. feed), which was 46% at the end of the exposure. This COR value is justified from the main TE contribution of Penta-CDD and -CDF congeners (63%), and the half-life is among the shortest of all those described in the literature both for experimental and naturally-exposed dairy cows. A fugacity-based model predicts a bulk milk contamination of 5 pg WHO-TE g(-1) fat, compared to the 10 pg WHO-TE g(-1) fat level observed. Such findings are discussed in light of the lactation and metabolic status of the herd for which the transition period, characterised by a negative metabolic energy balance and a consequent adipose tissue mobilization, could play a relevant role.

We studied the effects of two different types of interferon alpha (natural interferon from human leukocytes vs. recombinant interferon 2b) in 64 patients with chronic Non-A, Non-B hepatitis; other finalities were: definition of the optimal duration of therapy with interferon alpha (IFN alpha), entity of side effects, cost-benefit ratio. Patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups, according to duration of IFN alpha treatment: Group I was treated for 12 months, Group II for six months, Group III for 3 months. Each group consisted of two subgroups, divided on the basis of the type of IFN used: subgroup A was administered natural IFN alpha, and subgroup B received recombinant IFN alpha 2b. Each patients was given 3 million units of IFN alpha by intramuscular injection on alternate days. At the end of treatment, a decrease in serum ALT activity was achieved in 39 cases (65%). The response rate was higher in Group I (89%) than in Group II (54%) and Group III (55%). Natural and recombinant IFN alpha 2b induced similar effects in patients treated for twelve months (Group I); recombinant IFN was more effective than natural IFN alpha in patients treated for six and three months. We conclude that the 12-month treatment with 3 million units of intramuscular recombinant IFN alpha, administered on alternate days, might be the optimal therapy schedule. This proposal is also supported by the evaluation of the cost benefit ratio.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Twenty-two subjects (8 males, 14 females, mean age 36 years, range 21-57) with symptoms of diffuse pain or fullness in a lower abdominal quadrant, without repercussions on general health but with chronic anxiety of which the subjects complained or which emerged during confidential conversation with the physicians, were enrolled in our outpatient department for liver and gastroenterologic pathology at the Institute of Internal Medicine and Metabolic Disorders, II Faculty of Medicine, Naples University. After an average 30-day wash-out period, patients were treated with etizolam, a new psychoactive drug for somatized anxiety. Mean dosage and duration of treatment were 1 tablet twice daily for 25 days. Painful symptoms disappeared in 16.3% of patients, decreased in 38.3% and remained stationary in 22.7% and became worse in 22.7%. Number of bowel motions decreased in 14 patients (63.6%, from an average of 2.04 to 1.56). It can therefore be concluded that etizolam treatment was effective in subjects with colon disorders accompanied by chronic anxiety syndrome or that became acute as result of stressful socio-economic or affective situations or personal disappointment.
