We present our findings from the first long X-ray observation of the hard X-ray source Swift J0826.2-7033 with XMM-Newton, which has shown characteristics of magnetic accretion. The system appears to have a long orbital period (~7.8 h) accompanied by short timescale variabilities, which we tentatively interpret as the spin and beat periods of an intermediate polar. These short- and long-timescale modulations are energy-independent, suggesting that photoelectric absorption does not play any role in producing the variabilities. If our suspected spin and beat periods are true, then Swift J0826.2-7033 accretes via disc-overflow with an equal fraction of accretion taking place via disc and stream. The XMM-Newton and Swift-BAT spectral analysis reveals that the post-shock region in Swift J0826.2-7033 has a multi-temperature structure with a maximum temperature of ~43 keV, which is absorbed by a material with an average equivalent hydrogen column density of ~1.6$\times$10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ that partially covers ~27% of the X-ray source. The suprasolar abundances, with hints of an evolved donor, collectively make Swift J0826.2-7033 an interesting target, which likely underwent a thermal timescale mass transfer phase., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. We report the detection of a long X-ray burst triggered on MJD 60171.65 from the ultra-compact binary 4U 1850$-$087 by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). We analyse the NICER data observed in between MJD 60095.19$-$60177.43, including one observation covered part of the long X-ray burst tail, i.e., $0.15-3.8$ hr after the trigger. The persistent spectra are quite similar and well described by a combination of multi-color disk blackbody, with the inner temperature of 0.5 keV, and a thermally comptonized continuum with the asymptotic power-law photon index of $\Gamma\sim2.2$, and electron temperature of $kT_{\rm e}\sim20-30$ keV. The persistent fluxes were around $3.8\times10^{-10}~{\rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$, corresponding to a local accretion rate of $1\%~\dot{m}_{\rm Edd}$. Part of time-resolved burst spectra show a clear deviation from the blackbody model, which can be improved by considering the enhanced persistent emission due to the Poynting-Robertson drag, or the reflected disk emission illuminated by the burst. From the burst flux during the cooling tail, we estimate the burst duration, $\tau \approx 0.78$ hr, the burst fluence, $E_\mathrm{b} \approx 4.1 \times 10^{41}$ ergs, and the ignition column depth, $y_{\rm ign}\approx 3.5\times10^{10}~{\rm g~cm^{-2}}$. We propose that the long X-ray burst is powered by unstable burning of pure helium in deep layer. The Lunar Gravitational-wave Antenna (LGWA) is a proposed array of next-generation inertial sensors to monitor the response of the Moon to gravitational waves (GWs). Given the size of the Moon and the expected noise produced by the lunar seismic background, the LGWA would be able to observe GWs from about 1 mHz to 1 Hz. This would make the LGWA the missing link between space-borne detectors like LISA with peak sensitivities around a few millihertz and proposed future terrestrial detectors like Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer. In this article, we provide a first comprehensive analysis of the LGWA science case including its multi-messenger aspects and lunar science with LGWA data. We also describe the scientific analyses of the Moon required to plan the LGWA mission.

Type I X-ray bursts in the ultracompact X-ray binary 4U 1820$-$30 are powered by the unstable thermonuclear burning of hydrogen-deficient material. We report the detection of 15 type I X-ray bursts from 4U 1820$-$30 observed by NICER in between 2017 and 2023. All these bursts occurred in the low state for the persistent flux in the range of $2.5-8\times10^{-9}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}}$ in 0.1$-$250 keV. The burst spectra during the tail can be well explained by blackbody model. However, for the first $\sim$5 s after the burst onset, the time-resolved spectra showed strong deviations from the blackbody model. The significant improvement of the fit can be obtained by taking into account of the enhanced persistent emission due to the Poynting-Robterson drag, the extra emission modelled by another blackbody component or by the reflection from the surrounding accretion disk. The reflection model provides a self-consistent and physically motivated explanation. We find that the accretion disk density changed with 0.5 s delay as response to the burst radiation, which indicates the distortion of the accretion disk during X-ray bursts. From the time-resolved spectroscopy, all bursts showed the characteristic of photospheric radius expansion (PRE). We find one superexpansion burst with the extreme photospheric radius $r_{\rm ph}>10^3$ km and blackbody temperature of $\sim 0.2$ keV, thirteen strong PRE bursts for $r_{\rm ph}>10^2$ km, and one moderate PRE burst for $r_{\rm ph}\sim55$ km., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. The first extrasolar planets were discovered serendipitously, by finding the slight variation in otherwise highly regular timing of the pulses, caused by the planets orbiting a millisecond pulsar. In analogy with the Solar system planets, we predict the existence of aurora on planets around millisecond pulsars. We perform the first magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of magnetospheric pulsar-planet interaction and estimate the radio emission from such systems. We find that the radio emission from aurora on pulsar planets could be observable with the current instruments. We provide parameters for such a detection, which would be the first radio detection of an extrasolar planet. In addition to probing the atmosphere of planets in such extreme conditions, of great interest is also the prospect of the first direct probe into the pulsar wind., Comment: 8 pages and 3 figures, To appear in ApJL

RX J0440.9+4431 is an accreting X-ray pulsar (XRP) that remained relatively unexplored until recently, when major X-ray outburst activity enabled more in-depth studies. Here, we report on the discovery of ${\sim}0.2$ Hz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) from this source observed with $Fermi$-GBM. The appearance of QPOs in RX J0440.9+4431 is thricely transient, that is, QPOs appear only above a certain luminosity, only at certain pulse phases (namely corresponding to the peak of its sine-like pulse profile), and only for a few oscillations at time. We argue that this newly discovered phenomenon (appearance of thricely transient QPOs -- or ATTO) occurs if QPOs are fed through an accretion disk whose inner region viscosity is unstable to mass accretion rate and temperature variations. Such variations are triggered when the source switches to the super-critical accretion regime and the emission pattern changes. Rare, energetic (long) thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts are classified either as intermediate-duration or superbursts, based on their duration. Intermediate-duration bursts lasting a few to tens of minutes are thought to arise from the thermonuclear runaway of a relatively thick (10^10 g/cm2) helium layer, while superbursts lasting hours are attributed to the detonation of an underlying carbon layer. We present a catalogue of 84 long thermonuclear bursts from 40 low-mass X-ray binaries, and defined from a new set of criteria distinguishing them from the more frequent short bursts. The three criteria are: (1) a total energy release larger than 10^40 erg, (2) a photospheric radius expansion phase longer than 10 s, and (3) a burst time-scale longer than 70 s. This work is based on a comprehensive systematic analysis of 70 bursts found with INTEGRAL, RXTE, Swift, BeppoSAX, MAXI, and NICER, as well as 14 long bursts from the literature that were detected with earlier generations of X-ray instruments. For each burst, we measure its peak flux and fluence, which eventually allows us to confirm the distinction between intermediate-duration bursts and superbursts. Additionally, we list 18 bursts that only partially meet the above inclusion criteria, possibly bridging the gap between normal and intermediate-duration bursts. With this catalogue, we significantly increase the number of long-duration bursts included in the MINBAR and thereby provide a substantial sample of these rare X-ray bursts for further study., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 20 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

We studied the broadband X-ray timing and spectral behaviors of the newly confirmed accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar MAXI J1816$-$195 during its 2022 outburst. We used the data from Insight-HXMT ME/HE, NICER and NuSTAR which cover the energy range between 0.8$-$210 keV. A coherent timing analysis of solely Insight-HXMT HE data across the full outburst revealed a complex behavior of the timing residuals, also prominently visible in independent Insight-HXMT ME and NICER data, particularly at rising part of the outburst and at the very end in NICER data. Therefore, we broke down the full outburst into a (noisy) rising part, covering only about five days from MJD 59737.0 to 59741.9, and a decaying part lasting for 19 days across MJD 59741.9$-$59760.6. Fitting for the decaying part a timing model including a frequency $\nu$ and frequency time derivative $\dot{\nu}$ component yielded a value of $(+9.0\pm2.1)\times10^{-14}~{\rm Hz~s^{-1}}$ for $\dot{\nu}$, which could be interpreted as a spin-up under our model assumptions. We detected the X-ray pulsations up to $\sim$95 keV in a combination of Insight-HXMT HE observations. The pulse profiles were quite stable over the whole outburst and could be well described by a truncated Fourier series using two harmonics, the fundamental and the first overtone. Both components kept alignment in the range 0.8$-$64 keV. The joint and time-averaged NICER and Insight-HXMT spectra in the energy range 1$-$150 keV were well fitted by the absorbed Comptonization model compps plus disk blackbody with two additional Gaussian components. Using the bolometric flux and spin-up values both evaluated during the decay phase, we determined a magnetic field strength of $(0.2-2)\times10^8$ G for MAXI J1816$-$195., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted version

NICER observed two outbursts from the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U~1730$-$22 in 2021 and 2022, which showed a similar spectral evolution in the hardness-intensity diagram. Seventeen type I X-ray bursts were identified in both outbursts. The X-ray burst spectra showed clear deviations from the blackbody model, firstly $\sim10$ s after onset. Adding the enhanced persistent emission due to the Poynting-Robertson drag or the reflection from the accretion disk both significantly improved the fitting results. We found that 12 out of 17 X-ray bursts showed the photospheric radius expansion (PRE) characteristic. Considering the nine PRE bursts out of ten X-ray bursts observed by Insight-HXMT, 78\% of bursts from 4U~1730--22 exhibited PRE. According to the burst rise time, the duration, the local accretion rate, and the burst fuel composition estimated from recurrence time, we propose that these PRE bursts were powered by pure helium. From the touchdown flux of PRE bursts, we estimate the source distance of $ d=7.54\pm{0.46} (X=0)$ kpc for a canonical neutron star with $M_{\rm NS}=1.4M_\odot$ and $R_{\rm NS}=10~{\rm km}$., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; Matches the version published in A&A

Type-I X-ray burst oscillations are powered by thermonuclear released on the neutron star (NS) surface in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), where the burst oscillation frequencies are close to the NS spin rates. In this work, we report the detection of oscillation at 584.65 Hz during the cooling tail of a type-I X-ray bursts observed from the accreting NS LMXB 4U~1730--22 in 2022 March 20, by the \textit{ Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer} (\textit{NICER}) telescope. The oscillation signal showed a strong Leahy power, $P_{\rm m}\sim54.04$, around 584.65 Hz, which has single trial and multiple trials confidence levels of $7.05\sigma$ and $4.78\sigma$, respectively. The folded pulse profile of the oscillation in the 0.2--10 keV band showed a sinusoidal shape with the fraction amplitude rms of $(12.5\pm1.8)\%$. We found the oscillation frequency showed insignificant upward drifting, i.e., less than 0.3 Hz, during the cooling tail, similar as the behavior appearing in accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXP), and indicate the source could be an AMXP spinning at 1.71 ms., Comment: matches published version

Type I X-ray bursts are the result of an unstable thermonuclear burning of accreting matter on the neutron star (NS) surface. The quick release of energetic X-ray photons during such bursts interacts with the surrounding accretion disk, which raises the accretion rate due to Poynting-Robertson drag and, thus, a fraction of the burst emission is reflected. We analyzed two photospheric radius expansion bursts in the NS low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636--536 that took place in 2017, using data from Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer. The time-resolved burst spectra showed clear deviations from a blackbody model. The spectral fitting can be significantly improved by introducing either the enhanced persistent emission (the $f_a$ model) or the reflection from the accretion disk (the \texttt{relxillNS} model). The $f_a$ model provides a higher blackbody temperature and higher burst flux compared with the \texttt{relxillNS} model. The peak fluxes of two bursts from the $f_a$ model, $4.36\times10^{-8}~\mathrm{erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$ and $9.10\times10^{-8}~\mathrm{erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$, are slightly higher than the Eddington limits of mixed hydrogen-helium and pure helium bursts from previous observations, respectively. When the disk reflections have been taken into account simultaneously, the peak fluxes are lower to match the preferred values. We find evidence to support the finding that both the Poynting-Robertson drag and disk reflection have been appeared during these two X-ray bursts. Superbursts are long duration, rare, and extremely energetic thermonuclear explosions of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (NS LMXBs), which are proposed to be due to unstable carbon ignition. We report the superburst properties and consequences from Aql X-1 observed by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, Swift, and Insight Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) on the MJD 59130.7. We found two faint type I X-ray bursts 9.44 days after the superburst with a short recurrence time of 7.6 minutes, which is the most accurate measurement of the quenching time in all NS LMXBs with observed superbursts. We also discovered mHz quasi-periodic oscillations in the frequency range 2.7--11.3 mHz immediately after the superburst, before and after the resumption of the first type I X-ray burst from NICER, Swift, and Insight-HXMT observations. For the first time, we observed the transition from superburst, via marginally stable burning to unstable burning in NS LMXBs. We calculate steady-state models of radiation-driven super-Eddington winds and static expanded envelopes of neutron stars caused by high luminosities in type I X-ray bursts. We use flux-limited diffusion to model the transition from optically thick to optically thin, and include effects of general relativity, allowing us to study the photospheric radius close to the star as the hydrostatic atmosphere evolves into a wind. We find that the photospheric radius evolves monotonically from static envelopes ($r_{\rm ph}\lesssim 50-70$ km) to winds ($r_{\rm ph}\approx 100-1000$ km). Photospheric radii of less than $100$ km, as observed in most photospheric radius expansion bursts, can be explained by static envelopes, but only in a narrow range of luminosity. In most bursts, we would expect the luminosity to increase further, leading to a wind with photospheric radius $\gtrsim 100$ km. In the contraction phase, the expanded envelope solutions show that the photosphere is still $\approx 1$ km above the surface when the effective temperature is only $3\%$ away from its maximum value. This is a possible systematic uncertainty when interpreting the measured Eddington fluxes from bursts at touchdown. We also discuss the applicability of steady-state models to describe the dynamics of bursts. In particular, we show that the sub to super-Eddington transition during the burst rise is rapid enough that static models are not appropriate. Finally, we analyze the strength of spectral shifts in our models. High mass X-ray binaries are among the brightest X-ray sources in the Milky Way, as well as in nearby Galaxies. Thanks to their highly variable emissions and complex phenomenology, they have attracted the interest of the high energy astrophysical community since the dawn of X-ray Astronomy. In more recent years, they have challenged our comprehension of physical processes in many more energy bands, ranging from the infrared to very high energies. In this review, we provide a broad but concise summary of the physical processes dominating the emission from high mass X-ray binaries across virtually the whole electromagnetic spectrum. These comprise the interaction of stellar winds with the high gravitational and magnetic fields of compact objects, the behaviour of matter under extreme magnetic and gravity conditions, and the perturbation of the massive star evolutionary processes by presence in a binary system. We highlight the role of the INTEGRAL mission in the discovery of many of the most interesting objects in the high mass X-ray binary class and its contribution in reviving the interest for these sources over the past two decades. We show how the INTEGRAL discoveries have not only contributed to significantly increase the number of high mass X-ray binaries known, thus advancing our understanding of the population as a whole, but also have opened new windows of investigation that stimulated the multi-wavelength approach nowadays common in most astrophysical research fields. We conclude the review by providing an overview of future facilities being planned from the X-ray to the very high energy domain that will hopefully help us in finding an answer to the many questions left open after more than 18 years of INTEGRAL scientific observations., Comment: 61 pages, 22 figures, 1 table, will be published in New Astronomy Reviews

Accreting white dwarfs (WDs) constitute a significant fraction of the hard X-ray sources detected by the INTEGRAL observatory. Most of them are magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) of the intermediate polar (IP) and polar types, but the contribution of the Nova-likes systems and the systems with optically thin boundary layers, Dwarf Novae (DNs) and Symbiotic Binaries (or Symbiotic Stars, SySs) in quiescence is also not negligible. Here we present a short review of the results obtained from the observations of cataclysmic variables and symbiotic binaries by INTEGRAL. The highlight results include the significant increase of the known IP population, determination of the WD mass for a significant fraction of IPs, the establishment of the luminosity function of magnetic CVs, and uncovering origin of the Galactic ridge X-ray emission which appears to largely be associated with hard emission from magnetic CVs., Comment: 55 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, will be published in New Astronomy Reviews

We investigate the three-dimensional motion of a test particle in the gravitational field generated by a non-spherical compact object endowed with a mass quadrupole moment, described by the Erez-Rosen metric, and a radiation field, including the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect, coming from a rigidly rotating spherical emitting source located outside of the compact object. We derive the equations of motion for test particles influenced by such radiation field, recovering the two-dimensional description, and the weak-field approximation. This dynamical system admits the existence of a critical hypersurface, region where gravitational and radiation forces balance. Selected test particle orbits for different set of input parameters are displayed. The possible configurations on the critical hypersurfaces can be either latitudinal drift towards the equatorial ring or suspended orbits. We discuss about the existence of multiple hypersurface solutions through a simple method to perform the calculations. We present a new method to measure the radius-to-mass ratio (R/M) of weakly magnetic, disc-accreting neutron stars by exploiting the occultation of parts of the inner disc by the star itself. This occultation imprints characteristic features on the X-ray line profile that are unique and are expected to be present in low mass X-ray binary systems seen under inclinations higher than ~65 degrees. We analyse a NuSTAR observation of a good candidate system, 4U 1636-53, and find that X-ray spectra from current instrumentation are unlikely to single out the occultation features owing to insufficient signal-to-noise. Based on an extensive set of simulations we show that large-area X-ray detectors of the future generation could measure R/M to ~2{\div}3% precision over a range of inclinations. We investigate the three-dimensional, general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect in the case of rigidly rotating spherical source which emits radiation radially in the local comoving frame. Such radiation field is meant to approximate the field produced by the surface of a rotating neutron star, or by the central radiating hot corona of accreting black holes; it extends the purely radial radiation field that we considered in a previous study. Its angular momentum is expressed in terms of the rotation frequency and radius of the emitting source. For the background we adopt a Kerr spacetime geometry. We derive the equations of motion for test particles influenced by such radiation field, recovering the classical and weak-field approximation for slow rotation. We concentrate on solutions consisting of particles orbiting along circular orbits off and parallel to the equatorial plane, which are stabilized by the balance between gravitational attraction, radiation force and PR drag. Such solutions are found to lie on a critical hypersurface, whose shape may morph from prolate to oblate depending on the Kerr spin parameter and the luminosity, rotation and radius of the radiating sphere. For selected parameter ranges, the critical hypersurface intersects the radiating sphere giving rise to a bulging equatorial region or, alternatively, two lobes above the poles. We calculate the trajectories of test particles in the close vicinity of the critical hypersurface for a selected set of initial parameters and analyze the spatial and angular velocity of test particles captured on the critical hypersurface., Comment: 20 pages, 13 Figures

Due to ionosphere absorption and the interference by natural and artificial radio emissions, ground observation of the sky at the decameter or longer is very difficult. This unexplored part of electromagnetic spectrum has the potential of great discoveries, notably in the study of cosmic dark ages and dawn, but also in heliophysics and space weather, planets, cosmic ray and neutrinos, pulsar and interstellar medium, extragalactic radio sources, and even SETI. At a forum organized by the International Space Science Institute-Beijing (ISSI-BJ), we discussed the prospect of opening up this window for astronomical observations by using a constellation of small or micro-satellites. We discussed the past experiments and the current ones such as the low frequency payload on Chang'e-4 mission lander, relay satellite and the Longjiang satellite, and also the future DSL mission, which is a linear array on lunar orbit which can make synthesized map of the whole sky as well as measure the global spectrum. We also discuss the synergy with other experiments, including ground global experiments such as EDGES, SARAS, SCI-HI and High-z, PRIZM/Albatros, ground imaging facillities such as LOFAR and MWA, and space experiments such as SUNRISE, DARE/DAPPER and PRATUSH. In this research note we introduce a new approximation of photon geodesics in Schwarzschild spacetime which is especially useful to describe highly bent trajectories, for which the angle between the initial emission position and the line of sight to the observer approaches $\pi$: this corresponds to the points behind the central mass of the Schwarzschild metric with respect to the observer. The approximation maintains very good accuracy overall, with deviations from the exact numerical results below $1\%$ up to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) located at $6~GM/c^2$., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, 3 subfigures

In this paper we investigate the three-dimensional (3D) motion of a test particle in a stationary, axially symmetric spacetime around a central compact object, under the influence of a radiation field. To this aim we extend the two-dimensional (2D) version of the Poynting-Robertson effect in General Relativity (GR) that was developed in previous studies. The radiation flux is modeled by photons which travel along null geodesics in the 3D space of a Kerr background and are purely radial with respect to the zero angular momentum observer (ZAMO) frames. The 3D general relativistic equations of motion that we derive are consistent with the classical (i.e. non-GR) description of the Poynting-Robertson effect in 3D. The resulting dynamical system admits a critical hypersurface, on which radiation force balances gravity. Selected test particle orbits are calculated and displayed, and their properties described. It is found that test particles approaching the critical hypersurface at a finite latitude and with non-zero angular moment are subject to a latitudinal drift and asymptotically reach a circular orbit on the equator of the critical hypersurface, where they remain at rest with respect to the ZAMO. On the contrary, test particles that have lost all their angular momentum by the time they reach the critical hypersurface do not experience this latitudinal drift and stay at rest with respects to the ZAMO at fixed non-zero latitude., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication on Physical Review D the 3rd of January 2019

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci. Thermonuclear X-ray bursts on the surface of neutron stars (NSs) can enrich photosphere with metals, which may imprint the photoionization edges on the burst spectra. We report here the discovery of absorption edges in the spectra of the type I X-ray burst from the NS low-mass X-ray binary GRS 1747$-$312 in Terzan 6 during observations by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We find that the edge energy evolves from $9.45\pm0.51$ keV to $\sim6$ keV and then back to $9.44\pm0.40$ keV during the photospheric radius expansion phase and remains at $8.06\pm0.66$ keV in the cooling tail. The photoionization absorption edges of hydrogen-like Ni, Fe or Fe/Ni mixture and the bound-bound transitions of metals may be responsible for the observed spectral features. The ratio of the measured absorption edge energy in the cooling tail to the laboratory value of hydrogen-like Ni(Fe) edge energy allows us to estimate the gravitational redshift factor $1+z=1.34\pm0.11$($1+z=1.15\pm0.09$). The evolution of the spectral parameters during the cooling tail are well-described by the metal-rich atmosphere models. The combined constraints on the NS mass and radius from the direct cooling method and the tidal deformability strongly suggest very high atmospheric abundance of the iron group elements and limit the distance to the source to $11\pm1$ kpc., Comment: matches the published version

We propose the Lagrangian formulation for describing the motion of a test particle in a general relativistic, stationary, and axially symmetric spacetime. The test particle is also affected by a radiation field, modeled as a coherent flux of photons traveling along the null geodesics of the background spacetime, including the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect. The innovative part of this work is to prove the existence of the potential linked to the dissipative action caused by the Poynting-Robertson effect in General Relativity through the help of an integrating factor, depending on the energy of the system. Generally such kinds of inverse problems involving dissipative effects might not admit a Lagrangian formulation, especially in General Relativity there are no examples of such attempts in literature so far. We reduce this general relativistic Lagrangian formulation to the classic case in the weak field limit. This approach facilitates further studies in improving the treatment of the radiation field and it contains for example some implications for a deeper comprehension of the gravitational waves., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The measurement of neutron star mass and radius is one of the most direct way to distinguish between various dense matter equations of state. The mass and radius of accreting neutron stars hosted in low mass X-ray binaries can be constrained by several methods, including photospheric radius expansion from type-I X-ray bursts and from quiescent spectra. In this paper, we apply for the first time these two methods simultaneously to constrain the mass and radius of Aql X-1, as a reliable distance estimation, high signal-to-noise ratio quiescent spectra from Chandra and XMM-Newton, and photospheric radius expansion bursts from RXTE are available. This is also used to verify the consistency between the two methods, and to narrow down the uncertainties of the neutron star mass and radius. It is found that the distance to Aql X-1 should be in the range of $4.0-5.75$ kpc, based on the overlapping confidence regions between photospheric radius expansion burst and quiescent spectra methods. In addition, we show that the mass and radius determined for the compact star in Aql X-1 are compatible with strange star equations of state and conventional neutron star models., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted by ApJ

Strong winds from massive stars are a topic of interest to a wide range of astrophysical fields. In High-Mass X-ray Binaries the presence of an accreting compact object on the one side allows to infer wind parameters from studies of the varying properties of the emitted X-rays; but on the other side the accretor's gravity and ionizing radiation can strongly influence the wind flow. Massive stars, at least $\sim$ 10 times more massive than the Sun, have two key properties that make them the main drivers of evolution of star clusters, galaxies, and the Universe as a whole. On the one hand, the outer layers of massive stars are so hot that they produce most of the ionizing ultraviolet radiation of galaxies; in fact, the first massive stars helped to re-ionize the Universe after its Dark Ages. Another important property of massive stars are the strong stellar winds and outflows they produce. This mass loss, and finally the explosion of a massive star as a supernova or a gamma-ray burst, provide a significant input of mechanical and radiative energy into the interstellar space. These two properties together make massive stars one of the most important cosmic engines: they trigger the star formation and enrich the interstellar medium with heavy elements, that ultimately leads to formation of Earth-like rocky planets and the development of complex life. The study of massive star winds is thus a truly multidisciplinary field and has a wide impact on different areas of astronomy. We develop a method for deriving approximate analytical formulae to integrate photon geodesics in a Schwarzschild spacetime. Based on this, we derive the approximate equations for light bending and propagation delay that have been introduced empirically. We then derive for the first time an approximate analytical equation for the solid angle. Swift J2218.4+1925, a hard X-ray source detected by Swift BAT, has been proposed as a candidate magnetic cataclysmic variable of the polar type from optical spectroscopy. Using XMM-Newton we perform detailed timing and spectral analysis with simultaneous X-ray ($0.3-10$ keV) and optical B band data. We complement the spectral study with archival hard X-ray (14-70 keV) spectra collected by Swift BAT as well as with optical, near and mid-infrared photometry from $SDSS$, $2MASS$ and $WISE$ archive, respectively. A strong periodic X-ray signal at 2.16 h, consistent with the recently determined spectroscopic orbital period, adds Swift J2218.4+1925 to the small group of hard X-ray polars and locates it at the low edge of the orbital period gap. The X-ray pulse profile shows the typical bright and faint phases seen in polars ($\sim 70%$ and $\sim 30%$ of the orbit, respectively). A pronounced dip centred on the bright phase is also detected. It is stronger at lower energies and is mainly produced by photoelectric absorption. A binary inclination $i \sim 40^o - 50^o$ and a magnetic colatitude $\beta \sim 55^o - 64^o$ are estimated. The source appears to accrete over a large area $\sim 24^o$ wide. A multi-temperature optically thin emission with complex absorption well describes the broad-band ($0.3-70$ keV) spectrum, with no signs of a soft X-ray blackbody component. The spectral shape varies with the source rotation reaching plasma temperatures up to 55 keV, hardening at the dip and being softer during the faint phase ($\sim7$ keV). We find the first indication of an absorption edge due to a warm absorber in a polar. Indication of overabundance of neon is found in the RGS spectra. The UV to mid-IR spectral energy distribution reveals an excess in the near and mid-IR, likely due to low cyclotron harmonics. We characterized the broad-band X-ray spectra of Swift J1745-26 during the decay of the 2013 outburst using INTEGRAL ISGRI, JEM-X and Swift XRT. The X-ray evolution is compared to the evolution in optical and radio. We fit the X- ray spectra with phenomenological and Comptonization models. We discuss possible scenarios for the physical origin of a ~50 day flare observed both in optical and X- rays ~170 days after the peak of the outburst. We conclude that it is a result of enhanced mass accretion in response to an earlier heating event. We characterized the evolution in the hard X-ray band and showed that for the joint ISGRI-XRT fits, the e-folding energy decreased from 350 keV to 130 keV, while the energy where the exponential cut-off starts increased from 75 keV to 112 keV as the decay progressed.We investigated the claim that high energy cut-offs disappear with the compact jet turning on during outburst decays, and showed that spectra taken with HEXTE on RXTE provide insufficient quality to characterize cut-offs during the decay for typical hard X-ray fluxes. Long INTEGRAL monitoring observations are required to understand the relation between the compact jet formation and hard X-ray behavior. We found that for the entire decay (including the flare), the X-ray spectra are consistent with thermal Comptonization, but a jet synchrotron origin cannot be ruled out., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

The motion of matter immersed in a radiation field is affected by radiation drag, as a result of scattering or absorption and re-emission. The resulting friction-like drag, also known as Poynting-Robertson effect, has been recently studied in the general relativistic background of the Schwarzschild and Kerr metric, under the assumption that all photons in the radiation field possess the same angular momentum. We calculate here the signal produced by an emitting point-like specific source moving in a Schwarzschild spacetime under the influence of such a radiation field. We derive the flux, redshift factor and solid angle of the hot spot as a function of (coordinate) time, as well as the time-integrated image of the hot spot as seen by an observer at infinity. X-ray irradiation of the accretion disc leads to strong reflection features, which are then broadened and distorted by relativistic effects. We present a detailed, general relativistic approach to model this irradiation for different geometries of the primary X-ray source. These geometries include the standard point source on the rotational axis as well as more jet-like sources, which are radially elongated and accelerating. Incorporating this code in the relline model for relativistic line emission, the line shape for any configuration can be predicted. We study how different irradiation geometries affect the determination of the spin of the black hole. Broad emission lines are produced only for compact irradiating sources situated close to the black hole. This is the only case where the black hole spin can be unambiguously determined. In all other cases the line shape is narrower, which could either be explained by a low spin or an elongated source. We conclude that for all those cases and independent of the quality of the data, no unique solution for the spin exists and therefore only a lower limit of the spin value can be given., Comment: accepted by MNRAS for publication; now proof corrected Version

The nebula powered by the Vela pulsar is one of the best examples of an evolved pulsar wind nebula, allowing to access the particle injection history and the interaction with the supernova ejecta. We report on the INTEGRAL discovery of extended emission above 18 keV from the Vela nebula. The northern side has no known counterparts and it appears larger and more significant than the southern one, which is in turn partially coincident with the cocoon, the soft X-ray and TeV filament towards the center of the remnant. We also present the spectrum of the Vela nebula in the 18-400 keV energy range as measured by IBIS/ISGRI and SPI on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The apparent discrepancy between IBIS/ISGRI, SPI, and previous measurements is understood in terms of point spread function, supporting the hypothesis of a nebula more diffuse than previously thought. A break at ~25 keV is found in the spectrum within 6' from the pulsar after including the Suzaku XIS data. Interpreted as a cooling break, this points out that the inner nebula is composed by electrons injected in the last ~2000 years. Broad-band modeling also implies a magnetic field higher than 10 microGauss in this region. The Galaxy's supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, produces an outburst of infrared radiation about once every 6 hours, sometimes accompanied by an even more energetic flurry of X-rays. The NIR photons are produced by nonthermal synchrotron processes, but we still don't completely understand where or why these flares originate, nor exactly how the X-rays are emitted. The power-law electrons radiating the infrared light may be partially cooled, so the distribution may be a broken power law with a ("cooling break") transition frequency. In addition, the emission region appears to be rather compact, possibly restricted to the inner edge of the accretion disk. In that case, the X-ray outburst may itself be due to synchrotron processes by the most energetic particles in this population. In this paper, we examine several key features of this proposal, producing relativistically correct polarimetric images of Sgr A*'s NIR and X-ray flare emission, in order to determine (1) whether the measured NIR polarization fraction is consistent with this geometry, and (2) whether the predicted X-ray to NIR peak fluxes are confirmed by the currently available multi-wavelength observations. We also calculate the X-ray polarization fraction and position angle (relative to that of the NIR photons) in anticipation of such measurements in the coming years. We show that whereas the polarization fraction and position angle of the X-rays are similar to those of the NIR component for synchrotron-cooled emission, these quantities are measurably different when the X-rays emerge from a scattering medium. The hard X-ray synchrotron emission from pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) probes energetic particles, closely related to the pulsar injection power at the present time. INTEGRAL has disclosed the yet poorly known population of hard X-ray pulsar/PWN systems. Pulsar wind nebulae are a prominent class of very high energy (E > 0.1 TeV) Galactic sources. Their Gamma-ray spectra are interpreted as due to inverse Compton scattering of ultrarelativistic electrons on the ambient photons, whereas the X-ray spectra are due to synchrotron emission. We investigate the relation between the Gamma- and-X-ray emission and the pulsars' spin-down luminosity and characteristic age. We find that the distance-independent Gamma- to X-ray flux ratio of the nebulae is inversely proportional to the spin-down luminosity, (\propto \dot{E}^-1.9), while it appears proportional to the characteristic age, (\propto tau_c^2.2), of the parent pulsar. We interpret these results as due to the evolution of the electron energy distribution and the nebular dynamics, supporting the idea of so-called relic pulsar wind nebulae. These empirical relations provide a new tool to classify unidentified diffuse Gamma-ray sources and to estimate the spin-down luminosity and characteristic age of rotation powered pulsars with no detected pulsation from the X- and Gamma-ray properties of the associated pulsar wind nebulae. We apply these relations to predict the spin-down luminosity and characteristic age of four (so far unpulsing) candidate pulsars associated to wind nebulae., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (6 pages, 2 figures)

The outbursts of low mass X-ray binaries are prolonged relative to those of dwarf nova cataclysmic variables as a consequence of X-ray irradiation of the disc. We show that the time-scale of the decay light curve and its luminosity at a characteristic time are linked to the radius of the accretion disc. Hence a good X-ray light curve permits two independent estimates of the disc radius. In the case of the millisecond pulsars SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE J0929-314 the agreement between these estimates is very strong. Our analysis allows new determinations of distances and accretion disc radii. Our analysis will allow determination of accretion disc radii for sources in external galaxies, and hence constrain system parameters where other observational techniques are not possible. We also use the X-ray light curves to estimate the mass transfer rate. Near-IR and X-ray flares have been detected from the supermassive black hole Sgr A* at the center of our Galaxy with a (quasi)-period of ~17-20 minutes, suggesting an emission region only a few Schwarzschild radii above the event horizon. The latest X-ray flare, detected with XMM-Newton, is notable for its detailed lightcurve, yielding not only the highest quality period thus far, but also important structure reflecting the geometry of the emitting region. Recent MHD simulations of Sgr A*'s disk have demonstrated the growth of a Rossby wave instability, that enhances the accretion rate for several hours, possibly accounting for the observed flares. In this Letter, we carry out ray-tracing calculations in a Schwarzschild metric to determine as accurately as possible the lightcurve produced by general relativistic effects during such a disruption. We find that the Rossby wave induced spiral pattern in the disk is an excellent fit to the data, implying a disk inclination angle of ~77 deg. Note, however, that if this association is correct, the observed period is not due to the underlying Keplerian motion but, rather, to the pattern speed. The favorable comparison between the observed and simulated lightcurves provides important additional evidence that the flares are produced in Sgr A*'s inner disk., Comment: 5 Pages, 3 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

I review the properties of three X-ray accreting millisecond pulsars observed with INTEGRAL. Out of seven recently discovered accretion-powered pulsars (one discovered by INTEGRAL), three were observed with the INTEGRAL satellite up to 300 keV. Detailed timing and spectral results will be presented, including data obtained during the most recent outburst of the pulsar HETE J1900.1-2455. Accreting X-ray millisecond pulsars are key systems to understand the spin and accretion history of neutron stars.
