Abstract

This paper addresses a crucial objective of the strategic purchasing function in supply chains, i.e. optimal supplier selection. We present a hierarchical extension of the data envelopment analysis (DEA), the most widespread method for supplier rating in the literature, for application in a multiple sourcing strategy context. The proposed hierarchical technique is based on three levels. First, a modified DEA approach is used to evaluate the efficiency of each supplier according to some criteria proposed by the buyer. Second, the well known technique for order preference by similarities to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is applied to rank the maximally efficient suppliers given by the previous step. Third and finally, a linear programming problem is stated and solved to find the quantities to order from each maximally efficient supplier in the multiple sourcing context. The presented approach is able to straightforwardly discern between efficient and inefficient partners, avoid the confusion between efficient and effective suppliers and split the supply in a multiple sourcing context. The hierarchical model is applied to the supply of a C class component to show its robustness and effectiveness, while comparing it with the DEA and TOPSIS approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a novel cross efficiency fuzzy Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique for supplier selection under uncertainty. In order to deal with uncertain input and output suppliers data, triangular fuzzy numbers are employed. A fuzzy triangular efficiency is associated to each supplier through a cross evaluation by a compromise between objectives. The results are defuzzified and a supplier ranking is determined. The method is applied to the evaluation of a set of candidate suppliers of an Italian SME, showing the ease of application and discriminative power among suppliers.

Abstract

Local and national Governments must deliver the public facilities that citizens need and, at the same time, select private firms that are able to build these facilities according to the best possible compromise between available resources (money, time...) and the quality of the required work/service. Consequently, multi-criteria evaluation schemes, such as the Most Economically Advantageous Tender (MEAT) scheme, are often used by tendering committees in public projects. The used procedure has to meet the requirements of full transparency and to assure competitiveness among bidders. Many MEAT award related models have been proposed in the specialized literature. This paper presents a classification of these models. Their strength and weakness are illustrated. The assessment of some of these models builds upon their application to an example of public procurement. The presented analysis can be used by Governments and public firms in the selection of the tendering mechanism that best meets their requirements, needs and expectations in bid evaluation.

38. Changes in the management and outcome of central nervous system involvement from ovarian cancer since 1994

Abstract

Objective: To identify differences in the management and outcome of patients with central nervous system metastases from epithelial ovarian cancer. Methods: The clinical and pathologic characteristics, treatment, and outcome of 23 patients with brain metastases from epithelial ovarian cancer who were treated during 1982-1994 were compared with those of 20 patients treated during 1995-2010 at the same center. Results: No differences were found in terms of primary tumor characteristics, time interval from ovarian cancer diagnosis to brain involvement diagnosis, sites of metastasis, and presence of extracranial disease. The main difference between the 2 groups was the therapeutic approach. During 1982-1994, most patients received radiotherapy only, whereas most patients during 1995-2010 underwent surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. The duration of survival during 1982-1994 was 5 months, which was significantly shorter than the duration of survival (18 months) during 1995-2010. Conclusion: An aggressive multimodal treatment approach might prolong the survival of patients with brain involvement from ovarian cancer.

It is sometimes necessary, for both penal and civil proceedings, to establish the existence of a preceding pregnancy, but this task is especially difficult if the period between the moment of interruption of pregnancy and the time of diagnosis is protracted. Methods of establishing the differential diagnosis between menstrual, abortive and puerperal blood, and that originating from pathological metrorrhagia, would be of great value and some are described in this article.
