ABSTRACTEnsuring strong adhesion, especially under varying environmental conditions, is a significant challenge in the field of coating technology. This research aims to enhance alkyd paint adhesive strength by incorporating rice husk ash-based geopolymer (GP-RHA) as a filler. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) technique was employed to systematically study the impact of GP-RHA levels on the adhesive strength of alkyd coatings under dry and wet conditions. The morphology of the coatings was analyzed using SEM-EDX. In dry pull-off test, the incorporation of GP-RHA in alkyd coatings led to an improvement in adhesive strength with the highest recorded adhesive strength of 3.9 MPa at a ratio of 41.67% wt. GP-RHA and 58.33% wt. alkyd paint. However, this higher proportion of GP-RHA resulted in the formation of a larger pore sizes hybrid coating, further causing water infiltration into the coating’s pore structure in wet pull-off test. Outcomes of this research showed the promising potential of GP-RHA filler in alkyd paint formulations to enhance adhesion. These findings offer valuable insights into the development of coatings utilizing agro-waste as a filler to improve its adhesive properties.

The detection of impact and depth defects in Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites has been extensively studied to develop effective, reliable, and cost-efficient assessment methods through various Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques. Challenges in detecting these defects arise from varying responses based on the geometrical shape, thickness, and defect types. Long Pulse Thermography (LPT), utilizing an uncooled microbolometer and a low-resolution infrared (IR) camera, presents a promising solution for detecting both depth and impact defects in GFRP materials with a single setup and minimal tools at an economical cost. Despite its potential, the application of LPT has been limited due to susceptibility to noise from environmental radiation and reflections, leading to blurry images. This study focuses on optimizing LPT parameters to achieve accurate defect detection. Specifically, we investigated 11 flat-bottom hole (FBH) depth defects and impact defects ranging from 8 J to 15 J in GFRP materials. The key parameters examined include the environmental temperature, background reflection, background color reflection, and surface emissivity. Additionally, we employed image processing techniques to classify composite defects and automatically highlight defective areas. The Tanimoto Criterion (TC) was used to evaluate the accuracy of LPT both for raw images and post-processed images. The results demonstrate that through parameter optimization, the depth defects in GFRP materials were successfully detected. The TC success rate reached 0.91 for detecting FBH depth defects in raw images, which improved significantly after post-processing using Canny edge detection and Hough circle detection algorithms. This study underscores the potential of optimized LPT as a cost-effective and reliable method for detecting defects in GFRP composites.

This study aims to develop suitable formulations of geopolymer concrete (GPC) by varying the percentages of the geopolymer with aggregates and evaluating the performances in thermal and mechanical properties of palm kernel shell ash (PKSA)-GPC compared to rice husk ash (RHA)-GPC and ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC). Preliminary tests were conducted to select the best mix design ratios before casting the specimens. Then, the performance of the PKSA-GPC, RHA-GPC and OPCC specimens was evaluated based on their thermal performance and drying shrinkage. The mix designs of PKSA-GPC 70:30, PKSA-GPC 60:40, PKSA-GPC 50:50 and PKSA-GPC 66.6:33.3 were found to produce an acceptable consistency, rheological and thixotropic behaviour for the development of the GPC. PKSA-GPC showed a better thermal performance than the RHA-GPC and OPCC due to their strong and dense intumescent layers and slow temperature increment upon exposure to a high flame temperature from ambient temperature to 169 °C. The low molar ratio of the Si/Al present in the PKSA-GPC created a thermally stable intumescent layer. In the drying shrinkage test, PKSA-GPC 60:40 and RHA-GPC 60:40 shared an equal drying shrinkage performance (5.040%) compared to the OPCC (8.996%). It was observed that microcrack formation could significantly contribute to the high shrinkage in the PKSA-GPC 50:50 and RHA-GPC 70:30 specimens. The findings of this study show that PKSA could be incorporated into GPC as a fire-retardant material due to its capability of prolonging the spread of fire upon ignition and acting as an alternative to the conventional OPCC.

Lightweight elastomer nanocomposites have several uses in the automotive and aerospace industries. There ought to be no compromises in terms of efficiency, durability, or performance when it comes to new technological products. This results in the ongoing quest for innovative materials. This study contributes to the development of graphene-reinforced silicone rubber by evaluating its mechanical and tribological properties. The two-roll mill mixing process, followed by the moulding step, is utilised in commercial nanocomposites preparation. As a result, the man-made composite can be justified financially. The moulding process was carried out at 170 °C, and the final curing took place at 200 °C for 4 h. Testing is done using filler weight percentages of 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7% graphene to determine the optimal filler weight %. The mechanical performance of silicon rubber was enhanced by over 213% when the graphene weight percentage was increased. With increasing load, the coefficient of friction decreases, with the lowest value found at 3% graphene by weight. The coefficient of friction and the specific wear rate were discovered to vary with sliding speed.

Currently, many studies of fused deposition modeling (FDM) focus on the development of new composite materials. For this reason, in order to enhance the quality of the printed parts, it is crucial to study the properties of a newly developed material for FDM. This study aims to investigate the effect of fiber on the mechanical, thermal, and physical characteristics of thermoplastic composites reinforced with oil palm fiber. The samples were characterized using mechanical and physical testing, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show the 3 wt% fiber composite had slightly higher tensile strength and modulus than plain ABS. Unfortunately, as oil palm fiber loading increased from 0 to 7 wt%, flexural strength results showed a declining trend, and the opposite happened for modulus values. Additionally, after the fiber was added, the thermal stability improved and intermolecular hydrogen bonding increased. A composite sample became more resistant to moisture when more fibers were added. 7 wt% oil palm fiber composite showed better dimension stability than 3 and 5 wt%, according to a thickness swelling test. As a result, oil palm fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites have improved mechanical, physical, and physical properties by adding fiber into ABS matrix.

Magnetorheological (MR) material started to gain exposure when researchers explore the potential of magnetic field-responsive material based on fluid (MRF), foam (MR foam), elastomer (MRE), and gel (MRG). Magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) is a smart material in which its physical properties can be changed rapidly and reversibly under varying magnetic field strength. Due to the potential commercialization of MRE-based devices, the fundamental factors that affect the rheological and mechanical properties of MRE need to be identified and documented properly. Various factors such as ferromagnetic particles' condition, elastomer matrix's condition, strain amplitude, exciting frequency, temperature, and many more have been reviewed and presented with supporting figures highlighting the MRE's current findings. A collection of MRE-based devices is also presented to summarize the applications explored by current researchers. A few challenges in the MRE research require immediate attention. It includes designing an innovative MRE fabrication equipment incorporating an electromagnet to permit anisotropic particle configuration during crosslinking. Moreover, an optimum thickness of MRE needs to be studied in every MRE-based device design to ensure that the magnetic field is optimized thoroughly. Therefore, more studies ought to be done to improve the MRE that can enable the commercialization of MRE in various applications.

Today, additive manufacturing (AM) is the most recent technology used to produce detailed and complexly built parts for a variety of applications. The most emphasis has been given to fused deposition modeling (FDM) in the development and manufacturing fields. Natural fibers have received attention in the area of 3D printing to be employed as bio-filters with thermoplastics, which have prompted an effort for more ecologically acceptable methods of manufacturing. The development of natural fiber composite filaments for FDM requires meticulous methods and in-depth knowledge of the properties of natural fibers and their matrices. Thus, this paper reviews natural fiber-based 3D printing filaments. It covers the fabrication method and characterization of thermoplastic materials blended with natural fiber-produced wire filament. The characterization of wire filament includes the mechanical properties, dimension stability, morphological study, and surface quality. There is also a discussion of the difficulties in developing a natural fiber composite filament. Last but not least, the prospects of natural fiber-based filaments for FDM 3D printing are also discussed. It is hoped that, after reading this article, readers will have enough knowledge regarding how natural fiber composite filament for FDM is created.

Self-healing polymer materials have the functional characteristics of curing when a crack penetrates the material. Damage response, healing ability and healing performance are the most important healing characteristics of a self-healing material. Self-healing in a material system is employed through different methodologies, such as capsulation, vascular filling and intrinsic healing systems. The most challenging factor in fabrication of self-healing material is the ‘carrier filling’ in both the vascular and capsule type healing methods. The self-healing is either autonomic or external, depending on the actuation of the healing. This paper reviews the healing agent carrier preparation for vascular self-healing systems and compares the vascular healing system with intrinsic self-healing. The review revealed that, in most cases, preparation of healing agents is challenging greater than understanding the healing mechanism. The behaviour of self-healing material under fatigue, impact, and ballistic characterisation is also reviewed towards suggesting the self healing materials for aerospace applications.

3-D E-glass fabric reinforced epoxy composites at 6 mm thickness were fabricated for various orientations of the binder yarn viz. 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° respectively. Tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear stress tests were conducted to ascertain the influence of binder yarn orientation on the mechanical properties of the composites. The composites with 0° binder yarn orientation showed the best strength followed by 90° whilst the others showed highly depleted traits in comparison. Shear stress induced at the interface of each lamina was seen as the major reason for drop in the strength. A secondary study was carried out to explore the effect of compression factor during fabrication on the mechanical properties of the composites. Laminates with varying thickness namely, 4 mm, 5 mm and 7 mm but, with same number of plies of 3D E-glass fabric at 0° orientation were fabricated. The test results were compared with the results of 6 mm composites from the primary study. The results showed that, compression factor affected the mechanical properties of the composites and had a direct relation with increasing compression factor up to a certain value beyond which a drop in properties was seen. Composites pressed to a thickness of 5 mm showed the best properties. Drop in properties was attributed to close packing of reinforcement and crushing of fibres leading to inefficient stress transfer. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to understand the modes of failure. The major failure modes observed were delamination, matrix cracking and debonding. Based on the results obtained, these composites can be seen as a material system for applications like ballistic armours, structural renovations and automobile components.

This article investigated the mechanical performance and corrosion behaviour of a diffusion-bonded A5083 aluminium/A36 mild steel dissimilar joint with a Gallium (Ga) interlayer. The bonding parameters were the bonding temperature (525 and 550 °C), holding time (60 and 120 min) and surface roughness (800 and 1200 grit). Property characterisation was achieved using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, Vickers microhardness tester, Izod impact tester and potentiodynamic polarisation testing. The results revealed that the significance of the bonding parameters was in the order bonding temperature > surface roughness > holding time. Increasing the bonding temperature resulted in an increase in the impact strength and a corresponding reduction in the corrosion rate and microhardness. However, increasing the grit size decreased the microhardness and a corresponding increase in the impact strength and corrosion rate. The impact strength and corrosion rate decreased with the increasing holding time while the microhardness followed a reverse trend. It was also discovered that incorporating the Ga interlayer resulted in a 67.9% improvement in the degradation rate.

The demand for composite fiber material is significantly high due to its excellent mechanical properties and its use in various industries. Recently, with the increasing awareness of environmental issues, researchers are now focusing more on eco-friendly and green materials. A biocomposite offers a good balance of strength and stiffness ratio, bending and membrane mechanical properties, balanced thermal distortion stability, reduced weight and cost, improved fatigue resistance, reduced notch sensitivity, and, comparatively, better performance than synthetic composites. Yet, due to the complex anisotropy of the composite material, the inspection and detection of inner defects become a challenge. Long-pulse thermography is one of the non-destructive evaluations (NDEs) used to detect defects in composite materials. However, very limited research has been carried out on the usage of a low-resolution infrared camera to perform defect or damage inspection on flax composite laminates. In this paper, an experimental setup of a long pulse thermography system using low-resolution infrared camera was performed on flax bio-composite to identify impact and lightning damage. The result highlights that with control parameters, a low-resolution infrared camera has the capability to capture the lightning and impact defects of flax biocomposites using the long-pulse thermography system. An image processing method is then applied to the defect to improve the quality of defect detection and reduce background noise.

A finite element model is developed to determine deformation and stresses on a composite wing of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a tubercle design at the leading edge of the wing. Tubercles, commonly known as protuberances found on the leading edge of a whale pectoral flipper, offering great performance from an aerodynamic perspective. This paper deals with a first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) approach to discover the UAV laminates composite wing model of tubercle leading edge (TLE) with rib-reinforced so that the equivalent stiffness and material properties are obtained from the simulation of finite element analysis using ANSYS. Another structural configuration of design replicating the idea of monocoque concept, whereby foam is used at the leading and trailing edges of the wing. Styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) core foam is used representing high strength-to-weight ratio with its superiority in the mechanical properties of polymeric sandwich composites. The updated static structural analysis from rib-reinforced can be applied to update the wing stiffness distribution of monocoque-foam. The optimum design is concluded from the tabulated deformation and stresses of both wings, where monocoque-foam showed better performance with a reduction in 50.72% of deformation and 35.88% of stress, compared to rib-reinforced design. Solution mixing, which is one of the standard methods of producing Graphene−based Nanocomposites (GPC) may not be as efficient as it is expected due to the presence of residual solvent in the cured product. Therefore, the influence of including acetone in the preparation of Graphene Oxide−based epoxy coating (GO−EP) on the curing behaviour, mechanical and corrosive behaviour was studied. FTIR and TGA analysis confirmed that the GO−EP prepared by ultrasonication (GO−EP U) indicated the presence of more low−molecular−weight/low crosslinked (LMW/LC) sites than GO−EP prepared by stirring (GO−EP MS). Meanwhile, the tensile strength and hardness of GO−EP MS was 20% and 10% better than GO−EP U which confirmed that the presence of a lower number of LMW/LC could prevail over the agglomeration of GO sheets in the GO−EP MS. Pull−off adhesion tests also confirms that the presence of remaining acetone would cause the poor bonding between metal and coating in GO−EP U. This is reflected on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results, where the GO−EP U failed to provide substantial barrier protection for carbon steel after 140 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl. Therefore, it is essential to consider the solvent effect when solvent is used in the preparation of a coating to prevent the premature failure of high−performance polymer coatings.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is capable of producing complicated geometries and a variety of thermoplastic or composite products. Thus, it is critical to carry out the relationship between the process parameters, the finished part’s quality, and the part’s mechanical performance. In this study, the optimum printing parameters of FDM using oil palm fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites were investigated. The layer thickness, orientation, infill density, and printing speed were selected as optimization parameters. The mechanical properties of printed specimens were examined using tensile and flexural tests. The experiments were designed using a Taguchi experimental design using a L9 orthogonal array with four factors, and three levels. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the significant parameter or factor that influences the responses, including tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and flexural strength. The fractured surface of printed parts was investigate using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show the tensile strength of the printed specimens ranged from 0.95 to 35.38 MPa, the Young’s modulus from 0.11 to 1.88 GPa, and the flexural strength from 2.50 to 31.98 MPa. In addition, build orientation had the largest influence on tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and flexural strength. The optimum printing parameter for FDM using oil palm fiber composite was 0.4 mm layer thickness, flat (0 degree) of orientation, 50% infill density, and 10 mm/s printing speed. The results of SEM images demonstrate that the number of voids seems to be much bigger when the layer thickness is increased, and the flat orientation has a considerable influence on the bead structure becoming tougher. In a nutshell, these findings will be a valuable 3D printing dataset for other researchers who utilize this material.

Despite the growing popularity of rice husk ash (RHA) in various applications, limited research has been devoted to identify the influence of silica content in RHA on the intumescent properties. The present work aims to introduce a novel and economical geopolymer hybrid fire retardant coating by utilizing the use of RHA. The silica from Rice husk (RH) was extracted using distilled water and hydrochloric acid as leaching agents and subjected to pyrolysis treatment. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis indicated that RH that underwent HCl pre-treatment at 600 °C for one hour produced a high purity amorphous silica content of 93.92%. XRD measurements revealed that HCl pretreatment increased the crystallization temperature of RHA to 1000 °C and retained the amorphous state of silica for 2 h. In a fire resistance test, temperature at the equilibrium and time taken to reach 200 °C for sample S3 (93.92% wt. silica) showed 5.83% and 3.48% improvement compared to sample S1 (87.49% wt. silica). The microstructure analysis showed that sample S1 possessed bigger pores on the coating surface while an increment in silica content in sample S3 produced a dense foam structure. Results from a fire resistance test were supported by the Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis of the sample. The oxygen-to-carbon ratio of S1 and S3 coating samples were 1.695 and 1.622 respectively, which indicated that lower oxygen–to-carbon ratio in sample S3 coating resulted in better anti-oxidant properties. Interestingly, the increment of SiO2 content in RHA efficiently improved the compactness of the char layer, which resulted in a relatively higher fire-retardant efficiency. RHA proved to be a promising environmentally friendly strategy to replace halogenated fire retardant materials.

Compressive strength is an important property in construction material, particularly for thermal insulation purposes. Although the insulation materials possess high fire-retardant characteristics, their mechanical properties are relatively poor. Moreover, research on the correlation between fire-retardant and compressive strength of rice husk ash (RHA)-based geopolymer binder (GB) is rather limited. In addition, previous studies on RHA-based GB used the less efficient one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) approach. In understanding the optimum value and significant effect of factors on the compressive strength, it was deemed necessary to employ statistical analysis and a regression coefficient model (mathematical model). The objective of the study is to determine the effect of different material behavior, namely brittle and ductile, on the compressive strength properties and the optimum material formulation that can satisfy both compressive strength and fire-retardant properties. The factors chosen for this study were the rice husk ash/activated alkaline solution (RHA/AA) ratio and the sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration. Compressive strength and fire-retardant tests were conducted as part of the experiments, which were designed and analyzed using the response surface methodology (RSM). The microstructure of geopolymer samples was investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that RHA/AA ratio was highly significant (p < 0.000) followed by NaOH concentration (p < 0.024). When the RHA/AA ratio was at 0.7 to 0.8 and the NaOH concentration was between 12 and 14 M, high compressive strength above 28 MPa was recorded. Optimum compressive strength of approximately 47 MPa was achieved when the RHA/AA ratio and NaOH concentration were 0.85 and 14 M, respectively. Brittle samples with low Si/Al ratio of 88.95 were high in compressive strength, which is 33.55 MPa, and showed a high degree of geopolymerization. Inversely, ductile samples showed low compressive strength and degree of geopolymerization. Water content within the geopolymer binder had a major effect on its fire-retardant properties. Semi-ductile GB showed the best fire-retardant properties, followed by semi-brittle and brittle GB. Using RHA as an aluminosilicate source has proven to be a promising alternative.

Nanocomposite made by blending nano-montmorillonite (MMT) and Silicon Rubber (SR) for mechanical and tribological performance is explored in this work. Different configurations of MMT/SR nanocomposite, with 0, 0.5, 2 and 5 wt % of MMT are manufactured by two roll mixing methods. Noticeable improvement in the mechanical and tribological performance is observed, which is also justified by a morphological study of fractured and wear surfaces through SEM. Two percent of MMT loading is found to be the optimum content that shows excellent performance compared to other compositions. The performance improvement can be linked to the good interfacial interaction between the MMT and SR. Statistical modeling through ANOVA is carried out for tribological performance, which reveals the influence of load on the coefficient of friction (COF) and the influence of sliding distance on the wear rate.

Fused deposition modelling (FDM) is a filament-based rapid prototyping technology that allows new composite materials to be introduced into the FDM process as long as they can be manufactured in feedstock filament form. The purpose of this research was to analyze the rheological behavior of oil palm fiber-reinforced acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) composites when used as a feedstock material, as well as to determine the best processing conditions for FDM. The composite’s shear thinning behavior was observed, and scanning electron microscopy was used to reveal its composition. The morphological result found that there was a good fiber/matrix adhesion with a 3 wt% fiber loading, as no fiber pullouts or gaps developed between the oil palm fiber and ABS. However, some pores and fiber pullouts were found with a 5 and 7 wt% fiber loading. Next, the rheological results showed that the increment of fiber content (wt%) increased the viscosity. This discovery can definitely be used in the extrusion process for making wire filament for FDM. The shear thinning effect was increased by adding 3, 5, or 7 wt% of oil palm fiber. The non-Newtonian index (n) of the composites increased as the number of shear rates increased, indicating that the fiber loading had a significant impact on the rheological behavior. As the fiber loading increased, the viscosity and shear stress values increased as well. As a result, oil fiber reinforced polymer composites can be used as a feedstock filament for FDM.

Geopolymer using aluminosilicate sources, such as fly ash, metakaolin and blast furnace slag, possessed excellent fire-retardant properties. However, research on the fire-retardant properties and thermal properties of geopolymer coating using rice husk ash (RHA) is rather limited. Additionally, the approach adopted in past studies on geopolymer coating was the less efficient one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT). A better approach is to employ statistical analysis and a regression coefficient model (mathematical model) in understanding the optimum value and significant effect of factors on fire-retardant and thermal properties of the geopolymer coating. This study aims to elucidate the significance of rice husk ash/activated alkaline solution (RHA/AA) ratio and NaOH concentration on the fire-retardant and thermal properties of RHA-based geopolymer coating, determine the optimum composition and examine the microstructure and element characteristics of the RHA-based geopolymer coating. The factors chosen for this study were the RHA/AA ratio and the NaOH concentration. Rice husk was burnt at a temperature of approximately 600 °C for 24 h to produce RHA. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to design the experiments and conduct the analyses. Fire-retardant tests and thermal and element characteristics analysis (TGA, XRD, DSC and CTE) were conducted. The microstructure of the geopolymer samples was investigated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the RHA/AA ratio had the strongest effect on the temperature at equilibrium (TAE) and time taken to reach 300 °C (TT300). For the optimization process using RSM, the optimum value for TAE and TT300 could be attained when the RHA/AA ratio and NaOH concentration were 0.30 and 6 M, respectively. SEM micrographs of good fire-resistance properties showed a glassy appearance, and the surface coating changed into a dense geopolymer gel covered with thin needles when fired. It showed high insulating capacity and low thermal expansion; it had minimal mismatch with the substrate, and the coating had no evidence of crack formation and had a low dehydration rate. Using RHA as an aluminosilicate source has proven to be a promising alternative. Using it as coating materials can potentially improve fire safety in the construction of residential and commercial buildings.

A finite element (FE) model is developed to study the structural performance on a composite wing of a UAV with a tubercle design at the leading edge of the wing. The experimental study of the designation of the composite at the wing skin is carried out to prove the simulation validity through material characteristics. In this paper, the numerical modeling for simulation is highlighted to correlate the process parameter setting of simulation replicating the actual experimental tests. The percentage difference was calculated to be 11.1% by tensile and 10.47% by flexural. The numerical work applied the study of FE analysis and developed a standardized numerical approach for structural optimization, known as FE-ACP simulation. The significant findings of deformation are obtained according to Schrenk’s aerodynamic loading, while the prediction of failure mode of Tsai–Wu under interaction among stresses and strains was acquired at the seventh and eighth layer of both spars.

The utilisation of rice husk ash (RHA) as an aluminosilicate source in fire-resistant coating could reduce environmental pollution and can turn agricultural waste into industrial wealth. The overall objective of this research is to develop a rice-husk-ash-based geopolymer binder (GB) fire-retardant additive (FR) for alkyd paint. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to design the experiments work, on the ratio of RHA-based GB to alkyd paint. The microstructure behaviour and material characterisation of the coating samples were studied through SEM analysis. The optimal RHA-based GB FR additive was formulated at 50% wt. FR and 82.628% wt. paint. This formulation showed the result of 270 s to reach 200 °C and 276 °C temperature at equilibrium for thermal properties. Furthermore, it was observed that the increased contents of RHA showed an increment in terms of the total and open porosities and rough surfaces, in which the number of pores on the coating surface plays an important role in the formation of the intumescent char layer. By developing the optimum RHA-based GB to paint formulation, the coating may potentially improve building fire safety through passive fire protection.

As a result of their significant importance and applications in vast areas, including oil and gas, building construction, offshore structures, ships, and bridges, coating materials are regularly exposed to harsh environments which leads to coating delamination. Therefore, optimum interfacial bonding between coating and substrate, and the reason behind excellent adhesion strength is of utmost importance. However, the majority of studies on polymer coatings have used a one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) approach. The main objective of this study was to implement statistical analysis in optimizing the factors to provide the optimum adhesion strength and to study the microstructure of a rice husk ash (RHA)-based geopolymer composite coating (GCC). Response surface methodology was used to design experiments and perform analyses. RHA/alkali activated (AA) ratio and curing temperature were chosen as factors. Adhesion tests were carried out using an Elcometer and a scanning electron microscope was used to observe the microstructure. Results showed that an optimum adhesion strength of 4.7 MPa could be achieved with the combination of RHA/AA ratio of 0.25 and curing temperature at 75 °C. The microstructure analysis revealed that coating with high adhesion strength had good interfacial bonding with the substrate. This coating had good wetting ability in which the coating penetrated the valleys of the profiles, thus wetting the entire substrate surface. A large portion of dense gel matrix also contributed to the high adhesion strength. Conversely, a large quantity of unreacted or partially reacted particles may result in low adhesion strength.

This study aims to explore the mechanical properties of hybrid glass fiber (GF)/sisal fiber (SF)/chitosan (CTS) composite material for orthopedic long bone plate applications. The GF/SF/CTS hybrid composite possesses a unique sandwich structure and comprises GF/CTS/epoxy as the external layers and SF/CTS/epoxy as the inner layers. The composite plate resembles the human bone structure (spongy internal cancellous matrix and rigid external cortical). The mechanical properties of the prepared hybrid sandwich composites samples were evaluated using tensile, flexural, micro hardness, and compression tests. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images were studied to analyze the failure mechanism of these composite samples. Besides, contact angle (CA) and water absorption tests were conducted using the sessile drop method to examine the wettability properties of the SF/CTS/epoxy and GF/SF/CTS/epoxy composites. Additionally, the porosity of the GF/SF/CTS composite scaffold samples were determined by using the ethanol infiltration method. The mechanical test results show that the GF/SF/CTS hybrid composites exhibit the bending strength of 343 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 146 MPa, and compressive strength of 380 MPa with higher Young’s modulus in the bending tests (21.56 GPa) compared to the tensile (6646 MPa) and compressive modulus (2046 MPa). Wettability study results reveal that the GF/SF/CTS composite scaffolds were hydrophobic (CA = 92.41° ± 1.71°) with less water absorption of 3.436% compared to the SF/CTS composites (6.953%). The SF/CTS composites show a hydrophilic character (CA = 54.28° ± 3.06°). The experimental tests prove that the GF/SF/CTS hybrid composite can be used for orthopedic bone fracture plate applications in future.

This paper aims to provide an overview of the experimental and simulation works focused on the detection, localisation and assessment of various defects in pipes by applying fast-screening guided ultrasonic wave techniques that have been used in the oil and gas industries over the past 20 years. Major emphasis is placed on limitations, capabilities, defect detection in coated buried pipes under pressure and corrosion monitoring using different commercial guided wave (GW) systems, approaches to simulation techniques such as the finite element method (FEM), wave mode selection, excitation and collection, GW attenuation, signal processing and different types of GW transducers. The effects of defect parameters on reflection coefficients are also discussed in terms of different simulation studies and experimental verifications.

Thin-skinned organic matrix composites within aeronautical structures are subjected to thermooxidative aging during their service life, leading to reductions in their durability. In this paper, a durability evaluation of fiberglass epoxy prepreg is performed on the original composite thickness before and after 800 h isothermal aging at 82°C. The characterization of both aged and unaged composites comprised tensile tests, DMA, FTIR, weight loss measurements, SEM, and DSC. The tensile strength and modulus of the composites increased after being exposed to pronounced aging conditions, whereas a decrease was observed in the toughness. DMA results revealed that the glass transition temperature and rubbery state modulus increased as a result of the thermooxidative aging. FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated the formation of carbonyl compounds due to oxidation of the chemical structure of the resin. SEM observations indicated the existence of minor superficial cracking and poor fiber-matrix adhesion after aging. In addition, a minor mass change was observed from mass loss monitoring methods. The overall findings suggest that postcuring and physical aging enhanced the brittleness of the resin, leading to a significant decline in the useful structural life of the thin-skinned composite.
