O presente Plano de Negócios diz respeito à criação e análise da sustentabilidade (económica, social e ambiental) de uma Empresa de Animação Turística, denominada “Walk-In-Blue”, focada em experiências desenvolvidas maioritariamente na natureza, envolvendo emoções fortes e uma perspetiva diferenciadora da ilha do Faial, nos Açores. É importante realçar os clusters de pacotes, que serão oferecidos tendo em conta as motivações e interesses dos clientes. A empresa pretende contribuir para o desenvolvimento do turismo local e em particular, melhorar a oferta de animação turística através da envolvência dos turistas no destino com atividades inovadoras. O potencial dos recursos naturais e culturais presentes no território, aliados aos ideais e características da empresa, fazem com que a “Walk-In Blue” se integre no mercado faialense e açoriano, com elevado potencial para ser, futuramente, a empresa local com maior prestígio na animação turística. Na investigação, foram realizadas entrevistas a profissionais do turismo e questionários à população como um todo, obtendo-se resultados interessantes e úteis que foram considerados no desenvolver do projeto (mercados-alvo, impacto da sazonalidade, condicionantes e perspetivas dos consumidores, entre outros). Através da elaboração deste plano, podemos concluir que a empresa será viável em todas as suas vertentes. Em termos económico-financeiros, será necessário um investimento no valor de 105.000€, que terá um retorno no prazo de 4 anos e 3 meses (Payback period), um VAL de 49.058€ e uma TIR de 19%. This Business Plan concerns the creation and sustainability analysis (economic, social and environmental) of a Tourism Entertainment Company, called "Walk-In-Blue", focused on experiences developed mainly in nature, involving strong emotions and a differentiating perspective of Faial Island, in the Azores. It is important to highlight the package clusters, which will be offered considering the motivations and interests of customers. The company intends to contribute to the development of local tourism and to improve the offer of tourist entertainment by involving tourists in the destination with innovative activities. The potential of natural and cultural resources in the territory, combined with the ideals and characteristics of the company, mean that "Walk-In-Blue" is integrated into the Faial and Azorean market, with high potential to be, in the future, the most prestigious local company in tourist entertainment. In the research, interviews with tourism professionals and questionnaires to the population were carried out, obtaining interesting and useful results that were considered in the development of the project (target markets, impact of seasonality, constraints and consumer perspectives, among others). Through the elaboration of this plan, we can conclude that the company will be viable in all its aspects. In economic and financial terms, it will require an investment of 105,000€, which will have a payback period of 4 years and 3 months, an NPV of 49,058€ and an IRR of 19%.

Die Geschichte der mehr als zwanzigjährigen geobotanischen und geografischen Feldforschungen von Christophe Neff auf der Insel Faial (Azoren) werden vorgestellt.

Es wird ein Überblick über 20 Jahre geografische und geobotanische Forschung auf der Azoreninsel Faial gegeben.

O presente estudo tem por objeto o regresso, de forma voluntária, de migrantes naturais da ilha do Faial à sua ilha de origem, preferencialmente, desde o início do século XXI, em resultado de migrações internacionais e/ou internas. Este trabalho de investigação, partindo da incontornável realidade migratória (internacional e interna) associada ao arquipélago dos Açores, tem objetivos exploratórios (de levantamento e identificação de situações de retorno no período em estudo, relativamente à comunidade em apreço), descritivos (de caracterização da situação dos ex-migrantes – emigrantes e migrantes internos – regressados ao arquipélago) e explicativos (de verificação, análise e avaliação das dinâmicas de regresso à região de origem). Os objetivos elencados permitirão focar os aspetos mais relevantes do fenómeno da migração de retorno à ilha do Faial, designadamente, as causas – e sua relação com o contexto em que, quer a partida, quer o regresso se dão – os impactos e a sua continuidade, tendo presente que a contemporaneidade tem vindo a configurar novas formas de mobilidade, às quais o arquipélago não é indiferente. A opção por este tema surge porquanto o retorno não é uma matéria frequentemente investigada, ou facilmente quantificável; daí que o seu estudo represente um valioso contributo para ampliar o espectro de conhecimento sobre esta realidade. Esta investigação tem a particularidade de alicerçar as duas tipologias migratórias – internacional e interna – recorrentemente tratadas em separado, bem como levou à proposta de uma nova tipologia no estudo das migrações – a migração dual –, procurando estabelecer conexões entre os três tipos de ex-migrantes e assumindo o elemento ‘regresso’ uma importância preponderante na ligação entre tipologias. O facto de não existirem estudos com esta abordagem, no contexto insular açoriano, torna este estudo único, revestindo-se da maior relevância para a comunidade científica, para a sociedade em geral e para a comunidade açoriana em particular, o contributo que o mesmo representa para o conhecimento deste fenómeno migratório. The present study aims at the voluntary return of migrants from the island of Faial to their island of origin, preferably, since the beginning of the 21st century, as result of international and/or internal migrations. This research work, starting from the unavoidable migratory reality (international and internal) related to the Azores archipelago, has exploratory objectives (survey and identification of return situations in the period under study), descriptive objectives (characterization of the situation of ex-migrants – emigrants and internal migrants – who have returned to the archipelago) and explanatory objectives (of verification, analysis and evaluation of the returning dynamics to the region of origin). The listed objectives will allow to focus on the most relevant aspects of the phenomenon of return migration to the island of Faial, namely, the causes – and respective relation with the context in which, both departure and return take place – the impacts and its continuity, taking in account that contemporaneity has been configuring new forms of mobility, to which the archipelago is not indifferent. The choice for this theme arises since the return is not a frequently investigated subject, nor easily quantifiable; therefore, its study represents a valuable contribution to broaden the spectrum of knowledge regarding this reality. This investigation has the particularity of linking the two migratory components – international and internal – which are repeatedly treated separately, as well as the proposal of a new typology within the study of migration – dual migration –, seeking to establish eventual connections among the three types of ex-migrants, with the element 'return' assuming a preponderant importance in the link among migratory types. The fact that there are no studies with this approach in the Azorean island context, makes this study unique, being of utmost relevance for the scientific community, for society in general and for the Azorean community in particular, the contribution that it represents for the knowledge of this migratory phenomenon.

Après un bref résumé sur la dynamique de la végétation pionnière dans les volcans actifs, l’histoire éruptive du volcan des Capelinhos est présentée. À partir de deux cartes de régénération végétale sur les champs de cendres de Capelo (2001, 2008), les résultats des campagnes de terrain sont brièvement discutés. Dans une partie des champs de cendre de Capelo, la succession semble être bloquée par Arundo donax, alors que dans l’autre partie, la végétation, qui est déjà relativement dense, semble évoluer vers une forêt dominée par Morella faya et Picconia azorica, avec une forte présence d’espèces exotiques comme, par exemple, Banksia integrifolia et Metrosideros excelsa. Les relevés botaniques de l’auteur sur le cône de Capelinhos sont présentés et comparés aux relevés historiques de 1994. Quand comparé à d’autres volcans, comme par exemple Surtsey, en Islande, le processus de colonisation dans le cône de Capelinhos semble progresser lentement. L’auteur considère que la faible densité de l’avifaune peut expliquer en partie la lenteur du processus de la conquête végétale. Cinquante ans après l’éruption, il n’y a encore ni d’arbres ni d’arbustes sur le volcan. Les espèces dominantes sont Tetragonia tetragonioides, Portulaca oleacera ainsi que Plantago coronopus. Les espèces exotiques semblent avoir un rôle important dans l’établissement de la végétation à Capelinhos.

The technique of documentary analysis and a subsequent qualitative thematic content analysis of childcare news collected in two local newspapers were used. The discursive records produced by the press on the assistance strategies value, on the one hand, an axiological dimension and forms of charitable intervention and, on the other hand, aggregate and reconcile the discourses and techniques inherent to charitable and philanthropic models. This mutual assimilation underlies the achievement of the same objective: The moralization and integration of disadvantaged invalid childhood and, above all, the protection of the existing social order. We conclude that, perhaps contrary to what would be expected, the charitable logic articulated in a concomitant way with the philanthropic logic survived, even with the stabilization of the republican period (result of a revolution that deposed the regime of the constitutional monarchy and implemented the republican regime in 1910 in Portugal, whose political elites mobilized an official discourse that advocated the separation between the State and Religion, assigning the State the function of social assistance for children and youth). This demonstrates a certain dissociation, as well as a relative autonomy of conceptions about child and youth care between republican political ideology and current social practices, at least in this specific context. publishersversion published

UID/PAM/00417/2013 Os moinhos do Faial constituem um património ligado à memória da colonização da ilha, que incluiu colonizadores da Flandres. Para além do moinho de tipo dito holandês, existem também na ilha moinhos de tradição portuguesa e exemplares resultantes da fusão dos dois tipos. Em 1989 a então Secretaria Regional de Turismo e Ambiente inventariou 39 moinhos no Faial, dos quais 11 foram classificados como Imóvel de Interesse Público em 1996. Em finais de 2010, a Junta de Freguesia do Salão deu início à recuperação do Moinho da Chã, processo terminado em Abril de 2014. No início de 2011, a Junta de Freguesia das Angústias deu início à reabilitação do Moinho do Pasteleiro, processo actualmente em curso. Contudo, a maioria deste património encontra-se ao abandono. Simultaneamente, a memória da colonização está afastada da realidade da população. A natureza rural deste património, considerando o actual abandono do mundo rural, será uma das causas para a sua desactivação. Trata-se de um património que pertence ao passado e cuja salvaguarda terá de passar pela reintegração no presente. Este artigo aborda as relações entre a preservação da memória e a salvaguarda do património, e espera contribuir para o interesse pela reabilitação dos moinhos do Faial. publishersversion published

WOS: 000434384800027, A new species of caligid copepod, Lepeophtheirus azoricus n. sp., is described from the dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe), caught in Atlantic waters off Faial Island in the Azores. Both sexes of the parasite were collected from the body surface of the host by the application of osmotic shock. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: (1) an obvious conical projection on the posterolateral corners of the genital complex, (2) the relative lengths of the second and third spines on the terminal exopodal segment of leg 4, (3) the relative lengths of the setal elements on legs 5 and 6 of the male, (4) the ornamentation, and lack of a myxal process, on the proximal segment of the maxilliped in both sexes, (5) the unusual structure of the male antenna., Flying Sharks-Collections, Consulting, Conservation and Education, This study was partially supported by Flying Sharks-Collections, Consulting, Conservation and Education.

O principal objetivo desta dissertação é perceber a importância do Turismo Náutico na Ilha do Faial e, assim, diferenciar a ilha como destino de Turismo Náutico e de Turismo de Natureza e Aventura. Pretende-se ainda apontar as ações necessárias que possam contribuir para o aumento da capacidade atrativa do Faial, da sua valorização e desenvolvimento e, principalmente, da afirmação da ilha do Faial e da cidade da Horta como a Capital do Turismo Náutico. Sendo o Faial uma ilha é perfeitamente natural que o mar desempenhe um papel de extrema importância no desenvolvimento económico da região. Cada vez mais se tem notado a importância do turismo para o desenvolvimento do arquipélago, em geral, e isso também tem sido evidente no que se refere particularmente à ilha do Faial. Essencialmente, esta dissertação pretende focar-se em perceber a importância que o Turismo Náutico pode ter no desenvolvimento da ilha. Sendo este tipo de turismo um dos mais importantes, em relação aos Açores, no Plano Estratégico Nacional de Turismo (PENT), esta dissertação pretende delinear objetivos estratégicos concretos e as melhores ações a levar a cabo para a promoção da ilha e sua rentabilidade turística. Com o objetivo de perceber melhor a importância do Turismo Náutico, foram realizados inquéritos a 160 turistas que circulavam na Ilha do Faial durante o período compreendido entre 01 de Julho de 2016 e 31 de Agosto de 2016, e realizadas algumas entrevistas, tanto a empresários no ramo marítimo-turístico assim como ao Diretor Regional de Turismo. Através desta dissertação conclui-se que o Faial é uma ilha virada para o mar, não só no presente mas através de um passado histórico ligado à baleação e, que juntamente com a vizinha ilha do Pico, soube utilizar essa história e essa tradição, adaptando-a à nova realidade do Whale Watching. É uma ilha que tem inovado na oferta de atividades náuticas e que procura neste tipo de turismo diferenciar-se das restantes ilhas do arquipélago. O Turismo é o sector mais importante para o desenvolvimento da ilha e o Turismo Náutico tem no Faial um papel tão importante como o Turismo de Natureza e Aventura, que é o produto prioritário para a RAA. A observação de cetáceos e o mergulho com escafandro são as atividades náuticas mais praticadas na Ilha. Apesar de continuarem a ser os nacionais a procurar mais o destino Faial para atividades náuticas, apresentam uma descida nos seus números face ao panorama geral. O mercado alemão reforça a sua posição, aparecendo o mercado holandês em terceiro. Há ainda que salientar o aumento do mercado Russo. Seguem-se os mercados dos Estados Unidos da América, da Inglaterra, da França, da Espanha e da Itália. Sabendo aproveitar o que a ilha tem de melhor, a sua paisagem, a natureza, as atrações naturais, a diversidade da fauna, a tranquilidade, a segurança e a autenticidade, será necessário apostar num desenvolvimento sustentável e estruturado, não só no que está diretamente ligado ao Turismo, ao Turismo Náutico e ao Mar, mas a tudo o que possa trazer à ilha melhor qualidade de vida, melhor qualidade de serviços, melhores acessibilidades e ligações, a um preço justo mas diferenciador. É importante fazer jus ao passado e à história náutica da ilha e saber aproveitar o produto “Triângulo”, juntando sinergias entre as três ilhas onde todas sairão beneficiadas, diferenciando o Faial e a Horta, de modo a tornar este destino como uma referência do Turismo Náutico. O mar tem e deve desempenhar um papel cada vez mais importante, não só para a prática de atividades de turismo náutico mas também como um meio de fazer chegar novos turistas à ilha. ABSTRACT: The main objective of this dissertation is to realize the importance of Nautical Tourism in the Island of Faial and, thus, to differentiate the island as destination of Nautical Tourism and Tourism of Nature and Adventure. It is also intended to indicate the necessary actions that can contribute to the increase of the attractive capacity of Faial, its valorization and development and, mainly, the affirmation of the island of Faial and the city of Horta as the Capital of Nautical Tourism. Being Faial an island, it is perfectly natural for the sea to play an extremely important role in the economic development of the region. The importance of tourism for the development of the archipelago, in general, has been increasingly noted, and this has also been evident with regard to the island of Faial. Essentially, this dissertation intends to focus on perceiving the importance that Nautical Tourism can have in the development of the island. As this type of tourism is one of the most important, in relation to the Azores, in the National Strategic Tourism Plan (PENT), this dissertation intends to outline concrete strategic objectives and the best actions to be carried out to promote the island and its tourist profitability. In order to better understand the importance of nautical tourism, surveys were carried out on 160 tourists that circulated in the island of Faial during the period between July 1, 2016 and August 31, 2016, and some interviews were conducted, both to entrepreneurs in the Maritime-tourist branch as well as the Regional Tourism Director. Through this dissertation it is concluded that Faial is an island facing the sea, not only in the present but through a historical past connected to the whaling and, together with the neighboring island of Pico, knew how to use this history and this tradition, adapting To the new reality of Whale Watching. It is an island that has innovated in the offer of nautical activities and that seeks in this type of tourism to differentiate itself from the other islands of the archipelago. Tourism is the most important sector for the development of the island and Nautical Tourism has in Faial a role as important as Nature and Adventure Tourism, which is the priority product for the RAA. The observation of cetaceans and scuba diving are the nautical activities most practiced on the Island. Although they continue to be the nationals to seek more the Faial destination for nautical activities, they present a decrease in their numbers in the face of the general panorama. The German market strengthens its position, appearing the Dutch market in third. There is also an increase in the Russian market. Following are the markets of the United States of America, England, France, Spain and Italy. Knowing to take advantage of what the island has the best, its landscape, nature, natural attractions, diversity of fauna, tranquility, security and authenticity, it will be necessary to focus on a sustainable and structured development, not only in what is directly Connected to Tourism, Nautical Tourism and the Sea, but to everything that can bring to the island better quality of life, better quality of services, better access and connections, at a fair but differentiating price. It is important to live up to the past and the nautical history of the island and to know how to take advantage of the product "Triângulo", joining synergies between the three islands where all will benefit, differentiating Faial and Horta, in order to make this destination a reference of Nautical Tourism. The sea has and should play an increasingly important role, not only for the practice of nautical tourism activities but also as a means of getting new tourists to the island.

22 new aphid species are recorded for Madeira Archipelago (Madeira Island: 19, PortoSanto Island: 2, Desertas Islands: 1). These species are Aloephagus myersi, Aphis idaei, A.loti, A. sambuci, Brachyunguis tamaricis, Cinara confinis, C. cupressi, C. fresai, Clypeoaphis suaedae, Ctenocallis setosus, Eriosoma patchiae, Greenidea ficicola,Hoplocallis pictus, Illinoia goldamaryae, Phloeomyzus passerinii, Pseudacaudella rubida,Saltusaphis scirpus, Sipha maydis, Smynthurodes betae, Takecallis arundicolens, Uroleucon cf. nigrocampanulae, and Uroleucon picridis. Five previously recorded specieshave spread to new islands in the Archipelago, namely Aphis solanella (Selvagens),Brachycaudus helychrisi (Selvagens), Nasonovia ribisnigri (Selvagens), Pemphigusbursarius (Madeira Island) and Pineus pini (Porto Santo). For the Azores Archipelago, weadd three new records: Aphis oenotherae (Pico), Illinoia lambersi (São Miguel) andNeophyllaphis podocarpi (São Miguel). In the Azores the following species have extendedtheir distribution to new islands: Aphis craccivora (São Jorge), A. fabae (Pico), A. hederae(Pico), A. ruborum (São Jorge), Cinara pinimaritimae (Pico, São Jorge) and Macrosiphumrosae (São Jorge). The status of the species from Madeira referred to in the literature asAphis paralios is analysed. The total number of aphid species recorded for each of theMacaronesian Archipelagos (Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands) isgiven, as is the number of species for each of the 36 islands in these Archipelagos.Currently, 183 aphid species are recorded for the Madeira Archipelago and 151 species forthe Azores Archipelago

International audience; The morpho-structural evolution of oceanic islands results from competition between volcano growth and partial destruction by mass-wasting processes. We present here a multi-disciplinary study of the successive stages of development of Faial (Azores) during the last 1 Myr. Using high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM), and new K/Ar, tectonic, and magnetic data, we reconstruct the rapidly evolving topography at successive stages, in response to complex interactions between volcanic construction and mass wasting, including the development of a graben. We show that: (1) sub-aerial evolution of the island first involved the rapid growth of a large elongated volcano at ca. 0.85 Ma, followed by its partial destruction over half a million years; (2) beginning about 360 ka a new small edifice grew on the NE of the island, and was subsequently cut by normal faults responsible for initiation of the graben; (3) after an apparent pause of ca. 250 kyr, the large Central Volcano (CV) developed on the western side of the island at ca 120 ka, accumulating a thick pile of lava flows in less than 20 kyr, which were partly channelized within the graben; (4) the period between 120 ka and 40 ka is marked by widespread deformation at the island scale, including westward propagation of faulting and associated erosion of the graben walls, which produced sedimentary deposits; subsequent growth of the CV at 40 ka was then constrained within the graben, with lava flowing onto the sediments up to the eastern shore; (5) the island evolution during the Holocene involves basaltic volcanic activity along the main southern faults and pyroclastic eruptions associated with the formation of a caldera volcano-tectonic depression. We conclude that the whole evolution of Faial Island has been characterized by successive short volcanic pulses probably controlled by brief episodes of regional deformation. Each pulse has been separated by considerable periods of volcanic inactivity during which the Faial graben gradually developed. We propose that the volume loss associated with sudden magma extraction from a shallow reservoir in different episodes triggered incremental downward graben movement, as observed historically, when immediate vertical collapse of up to 2 m was observed along the western segments of the graben at the end of the Capelinhos eruptive crises (1957-58).

Trabalho de Projecto apresentado para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Património Artístico Os moinhos da ilha do Faial representam uma das imagens da identidade da ilha. Apesar de alguns deles serem classificados como imóveis de interesse público, a maioria deles permanecem em estado avançado de ruína e estão em perigo de desaparecimento total. Neste projecto de trabalho, um novo inventário destes moinhos de vento foi feito, como também uma análise tipológica e conclusiva dos dados colectados, com especial atenção à sua localização, estado de conservação, o regime jurídico da propriedade e do regime legal de protecção. Finalmente, esta análise teve como objectivo ajudar a desenvolver um plano estratégico para recuperar a arquitectura dos moinhos de vento e promover a cultura local e o turismo, restituindo este património à comunidade onde estão inseridos.

Whole rock geochemistry of nine rocks from Faial Island (Azores) was used to characterize Faial Island volcanism. Studied rocks are lavas and were classified based on chemical data as basalts, hawaiites and trachyte. These rocks represent five stratigraphic units of island, from the base to the top: Ribeirinha Volcanic Complex, Cedros Volcanic Complex, Almoxarife and Capelo formations. The rocks belong to the sodic alkaline series, with the exception of the trachytic rock, that exhibits potassic affinity. Faial Island volcanism is characterized by low SiO2 contents (45 to 49 %), high TiO2 (2 to 3 %) and P2O5 (0.29 to 0.74 %). MgO shows values varying from medium to high (2 to 15 %). The trachyte has 62 % of SiO2, low MgO (0.42 %), TiO2 (0.53 %) and P2O5 (0.13 %) contents. Al2O3 varies from low to high (11 to 18 %) and reflects the plagioclase abundance variation. Na2O+K2O values increase with fractionation and K2O/Na2O ratio is less than 0.54, with the exception of the trachyte (0.73). Ni content decreases with magmatic evolution, from 356 to 5 ppm. The presence of the cumulate phases in basalts of Almoxarife and Capelo formations explains the MgO and Ni high values. Almost all the samples show Rb, Ba, Ta, Nb, Zr enrichment and Th, Sm impoverishment. The trachyte shows Ba enrichment and K depletion. Zr positive anomaly and U, Sr, P, Ti negative anomalies are observed in the trachyte. The REE patterns are typical of oceanic island lavas, showing LREE enrichment relative to MREE and HREE. The REE patterns suggest a continuous fractionation from a common melt generated by low partial melting rates. The rocks of Faial Island are the result of fractional crystallization and derived from a magma, which has mixed characteristics, mainly reflecting PREMA and EM II reservoirs, with minor contribution of HIMU.

The main objective of this work is to understand the importance of Nautical Tourism in the Island of Faial and to differentiate the island as destination of Nautical Tourism and Tourism of Nature and Adventure. It is also intended to indicate the necessary actions that can contribute to the increase of the attractive capacity of Faial, its valorization and development and, mainly, the affirmation of the island of Faial and the city of Horta as the Capital of Nautical Tourism. In order to better understand the importance of nautical tourism, surveys were carried out on 160 tourists that circulated in the island of Faial during the period between July 1, 2016 and August 31, 2016, and some interviews were conducted, both to entrepreneurs in the Maritime-tourist branch as well as the Regional Tourism Director. Through this work it is concluded that Faial is an island facing the sea, not only in the present but through a historical past connected to the whaling and, together with the neighboring island of Pico, knew how to use this history and this tradition, adapting to the new reality of Whale Watching. Taking in advantage of what the island has the best, its landscape, nature, natural attractions, diversity of fauna, tranquility, security and authenticity, it will be necessary to focus on a sustainable and structured development, not only in what is directly Connected to Tourism, Nautical Tourism and the Sea, but to everything that can bring to the island better quality of life, better quality of services, better access and connections, at a fair but differentiating price. It is important to live up to the past and the nautical history of the island and to know how to take advantage of the product “Triângulo”, joining synergies between the three islands where all will benefit, differentiating Faial and Horta, in order to make this destination a reference of Nautical Tourism.
